Tripping Over the Barrel is a series that highlights the unique personalities within the Oil and Gas Industry and the stories they have to share.
Jimmy Sebastian comes on the pod for a trip down memory lane and to chat all things Data & Analytics. Seven Lakes Technologies, now a part of W Energy Software, took the industry by storm in the mid 2010’s as a disruptive Oil and Gas Technology innovator. Jimmy, Funk, and others lead the charge, as Seven Lakes became one of the 1000 fastest growing privately held companies in the US in 2014. This pod provides insights into how it all happened, some of the challenges of scaling quickly, and how and why oil and gas data and analytics differs from retail and other industries. A fascinating listen. Enjoy!

Sarah Compton, aka "Tenacious G" (The G is for Geologist) is amazing. The former college Softball player wanted to study volcanoes but ended up in Oil & Gas. Sarah and Funk dive into life, business, softball, and getting served a steady diet of curveballs, success, and failures in all of those areas. Come for stories about bears breaking into your car and trashcans, and stay for social media and brand-building advice. The fastest 53 minutes ever!
The Smart CEO of C-Smart Analytics. A nit with wit. A guy in a tie. Ernie Hauser is many things, and today, he is a guest on "What the Funk?". Continuing our streak of Mid-Atlantic hustlers, Ernie talks about dressing for success, the value of cold calling, Measurement, and his favorite ever Pittsburgh athletes. A fun listen with a passionate leader who will never shy away from the grind!
Checking in from our Nation's Capital, Craig Heilman joins the podcast to talk about all things Naval Aviation, Baltimore's Best Crab Cakes, making Kevlar, and how his company, Arbo, is a good one to know in the Energy Data and Analytics space. The mid-Atlantic renaissance man lets us under the hood on all things DC, Energy Regulation, and helping veterans get acclimated to civilian life. A fun and fascinating listen!
Todd Brooker knows about the value of hard work. The President of Cawley, Gillespie & Associates learned a whole bunch about discipline, effort, and accountability at an early age from his father, who played at Alabama and in the NFL, and the Legendary Bear Bryant. Athletes are often successful in business, and Todd is no exception. We talk about his last 31 (!!) years at Cawley Gillespie, his ascension to President of the company, and how important it is for introverted engineers to get out of their comfort zone. Awesome listen!
Kevin Ludbrook & Jason Webster can sniff out the BS. Two fellas who did time at Quorum and bonded over fast cars are working wonders at Spira Data, one of the fastest-growing Operational Resource Planning and Field Ticketing platforms in the game. Come for the stories, stay for the "Say-Do Ratio"...and whatever you do, remove the term "If your controller gets hit by a bus..." from your lexicon. Good podcast with some good fellas.
Mark Hinaman (Pronounced like Chinaman, or Heineken) is one of the most versatile dudes in all of Energy. He heads up the Denver Young Professionals in Energy group, has a passion for nuclear energy, plays the saxophone, is an unofficial Renaissance Engineer, and is an authentic millennial. If you are looking for facts around nuclear, a passion for energy prosperity and someone who tells it like it is, Mark is your man. Fun listen with one of Denver's finest!
Nicole Nixon one of the best marketers in Oil & Gas (and any industry) joins Funk to talk about all things marketing. Combining emotion with content creation, the changing landscape of marketing, and some of their favorite ads ever created highlight this must-listen podcast. For anyone who creates content or wants to build a brand, this one's for you!

If there was one thing that I KNOW T-Lo loved besides A & M football and his family...it was his colleagues at Spotfire. It has always been a firm belief of mine that a huge part of Tim's emphasis on building culture at Energy Navigator was born out of his time in the early 2000's at Spotfire. Laura Dye, a recurring guest, was his work wife. Joseph Taylor was his brother from another mother. Peter Allen was his favorite business beer buddy while John Dinning and Rock Gnatovich (still the undisputed best name of anyone to come on this pod) set the example of servant leadership, compassion, and success. They all come on to roast and toast one of our all-time favorite colleagues, and dear friend.
T-Lo's three incredible daughters, Morgan, Erin, and Logan, bring the Spunk and join the Funk for this unforgettable episode of Tripping Over the Barrel. The apple didn't fall from the tree, so it is no surprise that the Loser Ladies have stories for days. We talk family trips to 50 states, being curious, how not to piss off dad, volunteer work, and his legacy. A legacy of a beloved man and a true digital wildcatter. Enjoy.
On our third tribute episode - Tim's college buddies from A&M give the down low on T-Lo from the late 80's and early 90's. Road trips to SoCal, engagements to weddings, current marriages, and the separation of business and professional highlight another heartfelt recording. Between 97 recordings with Tim and Funk, and now 3 tributes, this marks 100 episodes strong for TOTB!
On our second tribute episode to Tim Loser, we are joined by his baby brother, Matt, and some of his longtime OVS Group colleagues. Family came first for Tim - always did. But he put a great deal of care and effort into his work family as well, and this recording encapsulates that with some laughs, some tears, and an immense amount of appreciation for T-Lo.
It is with a heavy heart that we record our first tribute episode to the great Tim Loser. Some of Tim's old Energy Navigator colleagues, Terry Moschopedis and Marsha Vigil wax poetic and share some of their favorite memories of working with the man. We hope you enjoy this heartfelt and special content honoring a special person.
The Top Dog of the Texas Triangle - Jason Webster - goes tripping live from Funk's house and dives into what drives him. The fellas dive deep into the incredible "say-do" quotient, working at Quorum Software, and now Spira Data, and offers advice for his younger self.
JW is a well respected stud and does not disappoint....including a surprise announcement.
Cheers,
Sarah Fenton is a real American. A Shalennial. A grinder. A winner. The EQT Senior Executive joins the fellas on Tripping Over the Barrel and provides the lowdown on: Pittsburgh vs Denver, Rice vs EQT. Rice @ EQT, ESG @ EQT, remote work in Oil & Gas, favorite technologies, and so much more. High energy, super fun, and a good reminder that success is simply never an accident.
"Yes he Cann" was already taken, so instead we pose the fundamental question: Have you ever googled your name?? Mr. Cann, highly recommended by the esteemed David Forsberg, is a long time consultant who has seen it all during his consulting career - including donkeys delivering coal to homes in China. Now, he serves as a speaker, advocate, and expert in the Oil and Gas and Energy Transition space, and his following is massive. Come and see why this one of a Kind Canadian has carved out a bit of a byte of our industry.
This week on TOTB:...A man carved out of granite who was raised in New Hampshire. A passion for playing baseball, and a love of the Boston Red Sox...where both of his parents were teachers, and he married a girl from Pennsylvania before starting a career in Oil & Gas Data and Analytics.
We are talking about @Funk, right? Naw? Wow...The hosts have a feeling and the only cure is Bobby Neelon. Come for the stories, stay for technical deep dive, and understand why data is the sacred pill for Grayson Mill.
Ever met a man who was born in Pakistan, raised in Iran, spent formative years in Texas, schooled in New York, and molded on the soccer pitch? Well, now you have. Oh yeah, Quorum Software VP of Sales Soroosh Seyhoon has a tale or three and schools the fellas on living in Israel, Baha'i faith, Italian family dinners in Jersey, and being part of an acquisition machine on this powerhouse edition of #TOTB.
Rarely do we find a man from Western Canada who goes to college in New Jersey (Go @rutgers)…Rarely do we find a man from Western Canada who marries a woman from New Hampshire. Rarely do we find a man who wears a Red Sox hat on this podcast. Ok, scratch that last one. Marc Hebert (Ay-Bear), an executive at the rapidly growing Dakota Analytics, doubles down on some of the themes in the recently dropped Jose Rodriguez episode: PowerBI, Data Management, Analytics, Bitcoin mining, and so much more. Bonus: Fish sticks.
A Reservoir Engineer, a Data Scientist, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter. An EFT'er. An EQT'er. A Houston Cougar...Jose Rodriguez is many things. One thing he is not, however, is a fan of archaic technology. Nope. No sir. The Young King takes us through his favorite Tech solutions, talks about the stigma of working from home in Oil & Gas, and offers career advice to our College age listeners. This future industry leader lets it rip on the Trip.
By way of Nova Scotia, and before that - Viking ships from the North Sea - The inimitable Josh Ulla goes tripping with the fellas from his office in Oklahoma. We rap about ExxonMobil, tech startups, entrepreneurship, consulting and much more. High energy and awesome, just like the gingerman himself.
Trent Stoker, yet another DI alum, and our most loyal #TOTB listener, joins us with his friend and business partner, the unflappable Fred Soliz. Trent and Fred look different, sound different, act different, and live in different places...but they work brilliantly together and share the same passion for the Oil & Gas, and Energy Tech industries. It's a shame you can't see them, but sadly, Trent can't figure out the internet. Enjoy!
The Enverus guest streak continues! A disciple of Drillinginfo as well as sales doctor and recent guest, Matt Wilcoxson, Chase Nall checks in from Seattle to talk about his unique career path that continues to carve its own turns. We dive into mentorship, pattern recognition, adapting to change, and how judgement can really hinder us, professionally. One of the best, most introspective young leaders we’ve had on.
23 countries, 17 years, 5 AM wakeup calls and only 1 employer. Few people in the Energy Technology industry are more respected than Matt Wilcoxson. The dude is younger than both hosts, yet we both look up to him. An OG DrillingInfo sales guy, Matt has worn basically every hat possible in the Enverus sales group, seen ups, downs, wins, losses, expensive trips to Europe to realize you would have been better off quite literally anywhere else. A must listen for aspiring business leaders. Come see why the Sales Doctor is built different.. + a bonus: T-Lo reveals that he is a Grandfather now. Congrats old timer!
It is only fitting that Kurt Rucker, the most dynamic Geologist in Oil & Gas, works for a company called "Verdad". A quick translation to Spanish tells you all you need to know. Kurt will never be one to mince words, and that rang true here. We critique everything that is backward in the space, and take a look forward into what this crazy space will look like in 5 years. One of our best...

We discuss his upcoming conference, the Carbon Expo, and Dwayne goes over his thesis for accounting for abandonment costs in the well’s valuation. Dwayne is a big thinker and doesn’t disappoint.

Braxton Huggins is one of one. A SEVENTH (Yes, 7th) Generation Texan. A young Chief Marketing Officer. A branding guru. Sarah Stogner doesn't have time for your BS. Or yours. Or yours, either. And you, Chevron? As promised, the Unicorn delivered with a one of a kind episode.

Dr Jeff Spath, Texas A&M Petroleum Engineering Department Head, has had a full career - 30+ years at Schlumberger - is giving back by leading the department through the Energy Transition. The Professor schooled us on what it was like being an educator during COVID, recruiting students, and how to transition while the world is “transitioning.” Bonus: T-Lo geeks out on Aggie stuff, quite literally his favorite thing to do.

When it comes to Oil and Gas Data and Operational Efficiency, Zack Warren aka Z-Dubz is THAT dude. Well, Jerris Johnson has a good story behind how he became a “Land Man” in the Oil patch and how that landed him in Birmingham...and why he chose to stick around even when given the choice to leave. A Sooner by birth and hater of the Crimson Tide, Jerris talks about carving his own path, his growing company, and some of the differences between working for Operators based in Oil cities and those further from the action. Should the industry stop using BOE and switch to BOV? Dwayne Purvis thinks so. Nerd alert: We dig deep into the science of Oil & Gas...but we also got into the man, Big Perv: Dwayne grew up the son of a preacher, with no interest in working in Oil & Gas...but fate and scholarship money led him to it. Also, Dwayne educates TLo and the Funkmeister on what life is like as a consultant in Oil & Gas, and a discussion about accents ensues. A great episode with another great personality.

Curating genuine, relatable, and hilarious content is essential to building your brand on social media. In the Oil & Gas industry, two and funniest are Steph and Donnie Davis. We pose questions such as: "who is the funnier of you two?"..."what is it like to work with the Digital Wildcatters bro's?" and "how do you get 5 million LinkedIn views on a post about getting fired?" Two months ago, Kyle Golden, P2 executive and a good friend of TOTB had a simple message: “you guys need to have Thomas Feighny on your podcast, the guy is electric”. And boy, was he right. Thomas was born with the gift of gab, a passion for storytelling, and a desire to march to the beat of his own drum. Buying a used police cruiser at an Amarillo, TX auction? Sure! Starting a new company in the middle of a pandemic? Why not? Moving to Houston in the middle of the Summer? Of course. Bike riding at 5 AM in 15 degree weather? You already know. Thomas brings an undeniable passion, energy, and youthful exuberance to this weeks TOTB.

Chris Hansen is a fast riser in the political world. We pushed for a commitment to run for President in 2032. Prior to embarking on a career in politics, Hansen spent many years at IHS building up expertise in the Energy industry, which is always a hot topic in Colorado. He also went to Kansas State. Therefore, it was important to have him on a podcast run by an Aggie to remind him about his alma mater losing a football game to A & M in the 1998 Big 12 championship game. Tune in for that, and much more in this unique episode of TOTB.

Accurate shale production forecasting is imperative but elusive…so, how do you demystify the black box? Jon Ludwig joins the podcast to discuss how his startup, Novi Labs has cracked the code on it. Jon is a serial entrepreneur and after spending time in Both T-Lo and the Doctor’s back yards, life lead him to Austin and creating Novi. Using machine learning to generate shale forecasts sounds cool, but how do you sell it to always skeptical reservoir engineers? How do you build an AWESOME culture at your startup? Well, Allen Gilmer knows. He built one of the best startups our industry has ever seen. His advice is simple: “Don’t hire assholes.” Allen “Santa” Gilmer recounts his early days in El Paso, building DrillingInfo (now Enverus) into an industry leader while maintaining the same fun culture that started even after getting private equity money. By the way, what did he do with that money? He generously gave it away…well some of it ($200,000). T-Lo and Dr. Funkenstein talk about some of the old DI User Conferences, giving Billy Beane a hard time, and find out what the heck is going on in Allen’s “Man-Barn”.
