Hey Guys, welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, I’m your host Jack Bull. I was fortunate to be joined on this episode by Remuera Golf Club Member & Auckland representative Golfer Matt Cormack, who tells me more about his stand out year in 2023.
Matt competed at both Senior and Masters levelthis year with Auckland, superbly winning both National Inter-Provincial titles at each grade and he was also crowned player of the tournament at the Freyberg Masters held at Awapuni Links in Gisborne- you definitely didn’t want to be Matt’s opponent this season, but luckily for me, we were on the same team atthe Freyberg!
As if 3 gold medals wasn’t enough this year for Matt, he alsoadded the Bisset Shield with Remuera, the Te Puke Mid-Amateur and the Walton Masters to his wins – what a year!
Matt also shares insights into the new up and coming players in the region and shares some of the things he's learnt from the young guns!
Matt has represented Auckland Golf for over 20 years and is Blue and White through and through, not only as a player, Matt is alsoSenior Men's Captain and has just been unveiled as the new President of Auckland Golf, helping the wider Auckland Golf community as well as the teams, this is his way of giving back to the game. Welcome back to The Hole In One Golf Podcast, I'm your host Jack Bull.
I'm joined by PGA Golf Professional and author James Ellis-Caird on the show!
James discusses his new book and also shares some brilliant stories from his time in Golf and he also talks about his wonderfully refreshing teaching philosophies and his classic winter video series "screw the winter grind".
James' new book- The Uncorrupted Pleasure of an Old Bladed Putter (and what a superb name for a Golf Book that is!) is available to purchase online now and can also be ordered at all great book stores!
https://amzn.eu/d/hTnI1jS
As you first pick up the book with it's whispy illustrations & classic Golfing title, your heart lifts and the first moment you read that the book is dedicated: "To my Dad, A truly wonderful man with a truly dreadful short game" you're immediately taken to that magical golfing place where Golf is far more than just a game....
The Uncorrupted Pleasure of An Old Bladed Putter
A collection of golfing fables
The Uncorrupted pleasure of an old bladed putter is a love letter to golf, revealing something of the beauty, joy and comradeship that its author James Ellis-Caird has taken from his golfing life. In doing so, it is quietly revolutionary, depicting a vision of golf freed from the constraints of convention and expectation, in which being ‘good enough’ is the goal, allowing space for personal expression, an appreciation of nature and the joy of the little things to come to the fore. A lesson not just for golf, but also perhaps for a quieter, gentler way to live our lives.
Whether you’re a non-golfer, a new golfer, an old golfer or an ex-golfer, The Uncorrupted pleasure offers gentle words of wisdom and a fond conversational style that will have you reaching for the nearest golf club and falling in love with the game all over again.

About the Author
James Ellis-Caird is a PGA professional golf coach, a husband, father, first time dog owner and lover of homemade baking.
James was captivated by the game of golf after striking his first shot with a borrowed five iron at Chesham and Ley Hill GC. Thirty-five years later his love affair with the game is going strong, channeling his passion into making golf more accessible, more open and more enjoyable for everyone.
After living all his life in Buckinghamshire, James, his wife and 8-year-old son have recently moved to the North Yorkshire coastline, with the dream to start a smallholding, play some beautiful golf courses, surf some waves and eat lots of fish and chips.
A late comer to the world of social media, James has recently found a new passion in content creation, with his videos and pictures encapsulating the beauty of the game he loves.

Following the launch of his book, Stephen embarked on a wonderful Golfing Odyssey across Scotland, playing “The Old Tom Morris Trail” which covers 18 courses across Scotland, that Old Tom Morris either designed or helped create, check out the trail here, with the tour through Bonnie Wee Golf:-
https://oldtommorristrail.com/
The trail begins at Askernish Golf Club, on the Isle of South Uist , made by Old Tom Morris in 1891. Next, travelling by ferry and road, the tour goes along the East Coast, through St. Andrews and down along the coast, then heading West back to Prestwick and finishing at the wonderful Machrihanish Golf Club which has what has been described as “The Best Opening Golf Hole In the World” across the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1997, a young 21 year old playing in his first Masters Tournament as a professional, would play his first 9 holes un-remarkably, taking 40 (+4) shots on the front nine at Augusta, as he appeared to be on his way to missing the cut. On the back 9, he would begin his journey into changing the course of Golf History while also changing the future of the game. When Tiger Woods came back in 30 (-6), recovering his round and going on the win the Masters by a record margin of 12 strokes, a winning margin which still stands to this day, one of the greatest golfers the game has ever seen emerged.
I reflect back on the news of Tiger's recovery and what Tiger has meant to the game in his career so far, remembering some of his many career highlights and also sharing some of my personal encounters with Tiger and offering where I think he stands alongside the other greatest players of all time.

Hey Guys welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, I’m your host Jack Bull, thanks very much for listening. On this episode, it was great to catch up with English Golf Professional Steve Surry, who is an amazing guest with an inspirational journey. Steve turned pro back in 2003 and he’s chosen to play mainly on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. He shares some wonderful insights into playing golf in South Africa as well as on various tours in the UK, where he sometimes struggled to even enter! Steve has recently hit some great form in South Africa, he shot a 63 which included a hole in one! Steve is currently resting in Trowbridge before heading back to South Africa for the co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour events. Steve talks openly about the highs & lows of professional golf on the “mini tours” and he reveals how to maximise the opportunities of playing on various tours across the UK and South Africa. We also discuss some of the talented players that Steve has played with, who have then gone on to perform at the highest level. Steve of course shares some crazy travel stories form his time in Africa and he talks more about being a huge Bristol Rovers Football fan! I’m sure you’ll really enjoy this podcast. Thanks very much for your time Steve!

Hey Guys, welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, thanks very much for listening! Joining me on this episode is Kiwi Golf Professional-Josh Geary. Josh is a very well known Touring Pro, having won numerous times in New Zealand and Australia, plus 3 times on the China Professional Tour, after getting his first win on the Canadian Tour back in 2008, not long after turning pro. Josh has also played in the USA on the Web.com tour, as well as in Latin America and now Europe, so he truly is an International pro!
I managed to catch up with Josh on his way back through New Zealand and he reflects on his season, with events on both the Challenge Tour and the main European Tour. Josh shares some great insights into how he is improving and he also tells some great tales from the Tour and European Q School, playing against the likes of former World Number 1 Martin Kaymer and long hitting Wilco Nienaber. Josh also picks who the next Kiwi to break through will be. Thanks very much for your time Josh!

It was an absolute honour to be joined by Spain’s Alex Del Rey, who shares with me some incredible insights into how he is able to regularly shoot so many low scores and he tells me more about his amazing round of 58, during the second round at the Swiss Challenge in France, on Europe’s Challenge Tour. Alex’s round of 58, consisted of an incredible 8 birdies and 3 eagles and at 14 under par, his round has gone down in history as the lowest under par score in a professional tournament on any tour- ever! Congratulations on your historic round Alex and I’m certain we’ll see many more like this from you again in future!

Hey Guys welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, I'm your host Jack Bull. Thanks vey much for listening and please do remember to reach out on the social links listed below so we can keep on listening to some more great guests and share more great #golfingtales !
I'm a huge fan of gamechangers and joining me in this episode is an entrepreneur with a track record of successfully disrupting the Sporting goods Industry and who is now successfully applying the same model to Golf shafts, which is an absolute #gamechanger. In a podcast almost as fast as one of Bryson De Chambeau's US Open Winning driver swings (relativity-ly speaking that is!), I'm joined by Reed Dickens, who I reach in LA. Just like Bryson, Reed packs a punch though & he tells me why he founded LA Golf, what it's like to partner with Bryson De Chambeau and plenty of other World beaters and explains how LA shafts can help all golfers with all clubs in the bag! Reed even has time to share a few stories about his time in the Whitehouse! Make sure you check out LA Golf Shafts here:-
https://lagolfshafts.com/
Reed Dickens Bio:
Reed Dickens has enjoyed a highly successful career, firstly working at The White House as press secretary for President Bush, then as a game-changing entrepreneur. Dickens left the West Wing for Los Angeles where he became a crisis manager to CEO’s and many of Hollywood’s A-List celebrities before going on to become a serial entrepreneur, founding or co-founding companies in sports, entertainment, beverages, education, and technology.
Dickens was co-founder of Marucci Sports, as the company’s first CEO, he worked alongside founding partner Kurt Ainsworth to disrupt the baseball bat industry and ultimately displace Louisville Slugger as the number one bat in Major
Dickens co-founded and serves as Chairman of EQtainment, creator of the Q Wunder curricula and kids show, music, and award-winning app, toys and games that teach Social and Emotional Skills (EQ).
Dickens is also a founding investor in Ascent Management Group, Lucky Buddha Beer, Rocky
Mountain Resources, and Baton Rouge-based Regymen Fitness (was a founding board member at vRide until it was sold to Enterprise in 2016.)
Dickens is currently the Founder and Chairman of LA Golf (LAGP).

Joining me on this episode is James Frazer, a touring Professional from South Wales. James shares insights from his time as an elite amateur. He placed top 10 individually at the Eisenhower Trophy, ahead of guys like Justin Thomas. James got through the European Tour's fist stage and since then, he's mostly played on the Euro Pro tour, coming close to winning numerous times. James tells me how Neil Roderick- aka "The Welsh Seve" was a great mentor to him and tells me what he learnt from playing with the likes of Tom Lewis. Hi Guys, welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast! I’m your host Jack Bull. Thanks very much for listening. Please remember to reach out on the social links listed below and please remember to share the links to the podcast, which will really help to grow the podcast and continue to share so many great golfing tales! Joining me this week is Jake Hapgood from South Wales (UK). He tells me all about growing up playing golf in Wales, as well as in Ireland and explains how both countries helped him grow as a player. Jake enjoyed a superb amateur career, representing Glamorgan and then Wales both in the home internationals and also in the 3 man Eisenhower Trophy team, as well as being selected to the GB & I Walker Cup training squad. Jake tells me more about how mentors such as Lee Griffiths of Coed-y-Mwstwr (a course which has produced many great golfing talents) and Welsh Golf Legend- Llewellyn Matthews from Southerndown, really taught him how to play and we share plenty of Llew & Griff related stories as we have both played a lot with them both! Jake shares a couple of classic Griff stories including Laura Davies, as well as “The Postman”.
Jake had a sensational debut for Wales, partnering Llewellyn, they would go unbeaten, with the highlight being a fine win against England’s best pairing, when Llew holed ridiculous putts & Jake held his nerve with clutch shots. Jake would then go on to lead Wales out in the singles around Conwy and tells me he was -9 when he won his match against Ireland’s top player! Jake enjoyed a very strong amateur career, which included winning a Pro event in Spain and after comparing himself against the likes of Tour Winner Bradley Dredge who he had played with, Jake was confident he could compete against the best in the game and turned professional last year, despite being in the midst of a global pandemic! Since turning professional, he’s had great support from his family, some great sponsors and also Black Star Golf Management, who look after a number of Welsh Professionals and helped secure Jake as many Professional starts as possible:-

Hey guys welcome back to the hole in one golf podcast thanks very much for listening and thanks so much for all of the amazing support!
If you follow the current golfing pages which seem to focus only on long hitting, then you may think that these days you need to be at least 245 pounds of bulked up muscle in order to power the ball long and compete on Tour. Well my guest today, regularly hits the ball over 300 yards off the tee, even though he weighs in at 138 pounds! I’m joined by long hitting Blaire Mc Keithen! Watch Blaire hit some awesome drives:-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jlu_wXeNI00&t=264s
Make sure you follow Blaire on his you tube channel formula golf, the link is below:
https://www.youtube.com/c/Formulagolf/videos
Blaire tells me about life on the European Alps Tour, alongside his best mates on tour Marcus Mohr and Shaun Jones. Blaire also provides insights in to how he has worked extremely hard to get to where he is now, having found himself homeless early in his career. Blaire also discusses how improving his putting and mental game has really helped him become a better player and win the Alps Tour Qualifying School. Blaire is definitely a player to watch this season on the Alps Tour and in search of his first win- I’m sure it’ll come soon Blaire!

This is a very special bonus episode, featuring the 4 members of the New Zealand team that won the 1992 Eisenhower Trophy. It all started last year when I watched a film of the 1992 Eisenhower Trophy win which is a very important part of New Zealand Sporting history. I thought it would be great to reach out to the players and ask them about the significance of that win and also find out what happened once they turned professional.
I was very fortunate to speak with the guys Firstly, I speak with Stephen Scahill who tells me the story of how a call from Michael Campbell set them both on a course to success. Then, I speak with Michael Campbell who came second that week, and he tells a very funny story about the Eisenhower presentation. Michael also goes on to talk more about his 2005 US Open Victory! I then speak with the Eisenhower individual winner Phil Tatuarangi, before chatting to Grant Moorhead who is the only New Zealander to have won both team Eisenhower Silver and Gold Team medals. I also had to ask Grant about the famous celebration (sorry Grant!) and I also ask Grant to reflect on their careers. The links to the film and another great article are here, I hope you enjoy this special episode:

Thanks joining me and thanks very much for all of the support, please remember to rate and follow the podcast and also please follow get involved through social media on the links below, I would really appreciate your support!
This episode marks a very important milestone! I’m joined by Taranaki Professional Grant Moorhead who is a Teaching Pro and he really gives back to golfers in New Zealand, passing on his great experience to others. As an amateur, Grant represented New Zealand at both the 1990 & 1992 Eisenhower Trophies, held in New Zealand and Canada and is the only New Zealand Golfer to achieve both a Silver and Gold Medal at the Eisenhower Trophy!
This podcast with Grant completes an amazing set of podcasts with the 4 members of the winning team, sharing their stories and reflecting back on their successes since then. Make sure you check out the other episodes with Michael Campbell, Phil Tatuarangi and Stephen Scahill. Grant announces some very exciting news and also shares stories from the Eisenhower Trophy, including that famous celebration- ouch! Grant also discusses life on Tour, his professional career and he very kindly shares numerous anecdotes and of course one unbelievable hole in one story, as well as more than one featuring "Goats" ! Thanks for your time Grant and keep up your great work in the game!

Andrew was extremely generous with his time and we had a wonderful chat over 2 episodes!
In part one, Andrew tells me how he was born into Golf in Scotland, he talks about his early career and he shares some exceptional insights from his Ryder Cup appearance, at what was infamously known as the "Battle of Brookline" in 1999, over in Massachusetts, USA. It was a huge baptism of fire, with Europe fielding 7 rookies and Andrew talks about that infamous Ryder Cup and his debut in more detail! I'm sure you'll really enjoy the 2 podcasts!

Hey Guys welcome back to the Hole in One Golf Podcast in 2021, it's great to be back!
Joining me in this episode is former European Tour Professional Stephen Scahill, who was part of the New Zealand team that won the Eisenhower Trophy in 1992. I managed to get hold of Stephen, across the ditch in Sydney Australia, where he currently lives and Stephen tells me how a call from Michael Campbell set them both on a path to winning the World Amateur team championship. Stephen would then turn professional and go on to play successfully on various professional tours around the world, he won on the challenge tour and kept his European tour card for a number of years and played against the best players in Europe. Stephen then headed to Australia and re-established himself in a completely different career away from golf, almost vanishing from the golfing spotlight, so I was keen to hear what he was up to now!

This is an amazing episode where I chat to one of New Zealand’s greatest ever golfers! Joining me is Phillip Tataurangi who is the only New Zealander to have won both the individual and team titles when New Zealand won the 1992 Eisenhower trophy, alongside team mates Michael Campbell, Grant Moorhead and Stephen Scahill. They would beat the USA team by 7 shots and GB&I by 27 shots! The USA team featured future major winners David Duval and Justin Leonard.
Phil tells me how he decided to remain amateur for a year and he won the New Zealand amateur title before heading over to the PGA Tour School in America. Phil speaks openly about making the transition to the professional ranks and discusses the steep learning curve he was faced with and how he improved and became a tour winner. He also reflects on what he might have done differently.
Phil shares some great stories from playing alongside some legendary players and he also discusses how he successfully moved onto course design and broadcasting after leaving the Tour. He also tells me more about that trick shot video that lit up twitter. Thanks very much for your time Phil and sharing your incredible journey!

In this mini episode, I take a road trip along the pacific coast highway in the North Island and head across the East Cape of New Zealand, down to Poverty Bay in Gisborne. This was the place where Captain Cook first made landfall in 1769 and he would first come into contact with the local Maori people. The Golf Course is now known as Awapuni Links and I find out that links golf in New Zealand isn't like it is back in the UK! I also learn about the course designer, known as CH Redhead, apparently he is originally from Ireland and he helped shape many of New Zealand's golf courses after emigrating to New Zealand aged 50 but I'm keen to find out more about this character. Photos and videos can be seen over on instagram @holeinonegolfcourses

I am privileged to be joined by a guest who enjoyed a phenomenal amateur career and was regarded as one of the best young players in Europe, being such a huge talent at a young age. To give you a sense of his achievements, he was unbeaten in singles matches over 5 years, while representing Wales in the junior home internationals (playing against the best players of England, Scotland and Ireland ) and he was also European Young Masters Champion in 2004, following in the footstep of past winners such as Sergio Garcia! When I saw him play, he was one of the best swingers of the golf club and best ball strikers who I had seen, golfers which included major winners. My guest is of course, Dr Zach Gould PhD! Zach joins me from Cardiff, Wales (UK).
What’s just as incredible as Zach’s fantastic amateur career though, is the path he has been on since, which has led him to where he is now. He obatined a PhD in strength and conditioning and founded Dr Golf Global, which is a Golf training platform helping everyone from beginners to tour professionals, improving their golf specific strength & conditioning.
This is a great episode which I’m sure you’ll enjoy and learn a lot from. Zach provides some great insights from Dr Golf Global as well from his own game as a top Amateur, sharing great advice for young golfers and he also tells me about the time he beat a well known Northern Irishman and was then presented by Royalty! Please also make sure you check out drgolfglobal.com:-

and sign up to the amazing programmes which will really help improve your game and also extend your longevity in the sport. Thanks very much for your time Dr Zach Gould, I look forward to seeing more great training advice from Dr Golf Global!

Joining me in this episode is Lee Jones, a great amateur Golfer from Conwy Golf Club in North Wales (UK). Conwy is an outstanding Links Course, with spectacular views and has has featured many big events and is a true test in the wind! The course was originally laid out in 1890 by Jack Morris, non other than Old Tom Morris’ Nephew!
Lee is a green keeper at Conwy Golf Club and he shares some incredible Golf stories from his time in Amateur Golf. Lee tells me how he was a great Junior and played for Wales Boys team before getting a job and then later finding his second wind in the game and playing his way into the Welsh Men’s Senior team, featuring in 3 home internationals. Lee improved each time and got his handicap down to plus 4! Lee also tells me about the amateur events he’s won and how he once shot 60 in a tournament.
Being one of Conwy’s finest ever players, Lee was made an honorary member, winning many tournaments at the club and he has also won the Welsh Champion of Champions tournament! Lee tells me about the time he featured in a Rick Shiels video series, Rick is a very famous online golf coach, and he also tells me more about Conwy Golf Club and the Curtis Cup that is due to be staged at the Course. Thanks very much for your time Lee and sharing some great stories, I hope you make a return to Golf very soon!

Hey guys, welcome to the Hole In One golf podcast, I’m your host Jack Bull. This is a special bonus episode that I have decided to share with you. Originally this was a chat with Lloyd Williams, way back in lockdown #1 before this podcast came about. Lloyd is a friend from back in Wales who is a golfer at Sotherndown Golf Club and he’s also a professional wedding photographer. Lloyd is an avid Photographer and Traveller (Lloyd @lwilliamsphoto ) and is co-host of #ffotocast #podcast Lloyd talks about international travel post #lockdown & shares his plans to go backpacking around #india #newdelhi #goldentriangle #agra #delhi #jaipur and then plans to take a train to #mumbai and #goa and taking plenty of photographs of course! His last big trip was to #morrocco which he tells me was absolutely amazing. He has also travelled to #italy as part of his #wedding work.
Lloyd has a pretty interesting career as a wedding photographer and I was really interested in how Lloyd set up his podcast and this episode would be a great listen for anyone who is thinking about starting a podcast, getting into the wedding industry or is interested in how this podcast came about, as this is a prequel which set the wheels in motion to launching and speaking with numerous guests. Lloyd is a great guy and he tells some absolutely hilarious wedding stories, as well as one particularly crazy story from Southerndown Golf Club at the end as well.

On this episode, I’m joined by the start-up founder of “My V Coach” - Justin Kinney. Justin shares his story with me and tells me how he grew up in Connecticut, USA and played Junior Golf with the help of the local Police Golf Programme. After College, Justin joined the corporate world, before becoming a high school teacher and also becoming a sports coach. Justin’s dream was always to start his own company though and his dream came true, as he said he “willed it” into being with plenty of #hustle and working on his business whilst teaching and finding funding to launch his #startup .
Justin had some caddying experience as well as teaching and coaching and this led to his "lightbulb" moment of starting “My V Coach”, check out their website here: https://www.myvcoach.net/and be sure to follow @myvcoach on Instagram. Justin also tells me that his team are working on some new revolutionary technology, so watch this space! I also learn how players can select a scrambling coach, a swing coach or a mental coach and so on, all aspects are catered for, to really help the complete player! Justin also advises how you can sign up as a player or a V coach. Thanks very much for your time Justin and I’m really looking forward to seeing how My V Coach develops into helping Golfers, athletes and coaches connect around the World!

Hey Guys, welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, down here in New Zealand, I’m your host Jack Bull. Please do remember to subscribe to the podcast and please also like, rate and share the podcast, which will help us grow and continue to share some great golfing tales!
Joining me on this episode is a really interesting golf and sports coach, the founder of “The Fluid Motion Factor” Steven Yellin. This is a revolutionary programme that allows us to access our best swing that is available to us. You’ve got to ask yourself- would you be happy hitting with your best swing every time? Most Golfers would say of course and they would be ecstatic if they could do that! Very few people understand how to get in the “Zone” and access their best performance however and that is what Steven teaches players and you can also learn this yourself in his books. Steven has even helped Bowling players achieve success such as Rhino Page who went on to score a 298!
Steven explains in more detail how he’s developed his programme over 45 years of learning and teaching. Steven has written the following books: “The 7 secrets of World Class Athletes” and the “Fluid Motion Factor” as well as his new release “Simplicity” which delves more into how we can all consistently access our best golf swing and best shots, which is what all golfers would dearly love to achieve! You can buy the book here, it will change your game:-
https://www.amazon.com/dp/1735169854/ref=rdr_ext_tmb
Steven also tells me what he learnt while teaching at David Leadbetter’s academy and he talks about some of the household name players he worked with at the academy. Steven also provides insights into how he helped Scott Mc Carron achieve more simplicity in his swing, which helped lead Scott in winning the 2019 Schwab Cup in dramatic fashion:-
https://www.pgatour.com/champions/news/2019/11/10/scott-mccarron-wins-schwab-cup-with-help-from-jeff-maggert-dramatic-win-in-phoenix.html
Scott Mc Carron provides a great recap of how Steven helped him here:-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o4Vv5OIPjM
Scott has won 11 times on the Champions Tour, including 1 Major - the Constellation Senior Players Championship and he was also awarded the Jack Nicklaus Player of the year award!

Shaun is currently playing on the Alps Tour over in Europe and he’s based in Bern, Switzerland. The Alps Tour events are played across France, Austria and Italy but Shaun has also played in Egypt and even further afield. The Alps Tour is a feeder Tour for The European Challenge Tour, with pros chasing a top 5 place on the order of merit in order to graduate to the Challenge Tour. Shaun explains how previous Alps Tour winners such as Mike Lorenzo Vera and Matt Wallace used the Alps Tour to gain entry to the Challenge Tour and later finding success on the European Tour.
Shaun talks me through his journey from Amateur Golf in New Zealand, what he learnt from playing against future European Tour player Ryan Fox and how he transitioned smoothly into professional golf after learning to shoot low scores as an amateur. Joining me is a great guy with a truly inspirational story of grit and determination. Golf Professional Sion Bebb joins me from Morlais Castle Golf Club in Wales (UK) where he’s the teaching professional. Sion tells me how he turned professional aged 17 and kept working on his game, steadily improving, before finally securing his Challenge Tour card and winning on Tour.
In 1999, Sion won the British Club Professional Championship and played against the USA Club professionals. He would also visit the European Tour school on several occasions and was mentally tough enough to get through numerous times, the first time he gained his European Tour card was in 2006, 20 years after first turning professional!
Sion would go on to win the 2006 Ryder Cup Wales challenge and that’s a story in itself. Sion also tells me more about his Grandfather William Ambrose Bebb, a famous Welsh author who helped found political party Plaid Cymru and also his father, Dewi Bebb, a Welsh Rugby Player who toured with the famous Lions Rugby team to both South Africa and New Zealand and many other countries as well in those days.
Sion talks openly about the highs and lows of life on Tour and explains what it takes to succeed at the top level. There is also one excruciating story he shares. Thanks for your time Sion and for sharing your amazing journey with me! Please reach out to Sion Bebb for coaching at his fantastic studio or for junior golf at the Morlais Castle Golf Club programme here:- https://sionbebb.co.uk/

In this episode of series 2, the Legends of Golf series, I was absolutely privileged to be joined by one of New Zealand’s greatest ever sportsmen- Professional Golfer Michael Campbell. In 1992, Michael helped New Zealand win their first ever Eisenhower Trophy, where he would finish second behind his teammate Phillip Tataurangi. New Zealand beat the USA team into 2nd place, by an incredible 7 shots. The USA team featured future major winners David Duval and Justin Leonard.
Michael would soon turn professional, winning in his first season, before stunning the Golfing World at the 1995 British Open, after shooting the lowest round of the week, a brilliant third round 65, to take the lead. He would end up missing out on a deciding playoff by 1 single shot and John Daly would triumph against Costantino Rocco. As his experience grew, Michael would go head to head against Tiger Woods on numerous occasions and he managed to beat Tiger more than once! He became only the 2nd major winner from New Zealand, when he won the 2005 US Open, after Bob Charles had won the British Open in 1963. Lydia Ko would become the 3rd New Zealand Major winner in 2015. Michael Campbell became only the 4th player in the history of Golf to win the US Open and World Matchplay championship in the same year in 2005.
I reached Michael in Spain, where his teaching academy is based. Michael shares some amazing insights into how he gained a mental edge at the 2005 US Open and also channelled the Tiger effect to go on and win! This is an incredible Golf story from start to finish, that we can all learn a massive amount from, enjoy!

In this episode, it was great chatting to an old adversary and former team mate- Richard Hooper from Neath Golf Club on the #holinonegolfpodcast this week! Rich tells me more about how he ended up going to University at the Home Of Golf, the famous St. Andrews University in Scotland, (which was founded in 1413). In St. Andrews, he rubbed shoulders with Prince William and was free to play the Old Course as he pleased! Rich was off 6 handicap when he left for Scotland, before playing regular links golf around all of the St. Andrews courses and winning the 3 main University tournaments held there- The St Andrews Gold Medal, the R&A bursar’s day, as well as the famous Boyd Quaich.
Rich left St. Andrews off a plus handicap and headed back to Wales, where he would win the Glamorgan County Championship and he has also recently achieved Glamorgan’s record number of caps – 90 and he has also been capped for Wales. Known as a play-off specialist, Rich would win the 2007 South Wales Open Pro event around Pyle & Kenfig, defeating former Welsh Amateur Champion Stuart Manley in a play off! Rich also tells me more about captaining the Glamorgan side to a dramatic Channel League Victory, as well as sharing some really great stories playing alongside great players such as Tommy Fleetwood and Ollie Farr.

In episode number 2 of series 3, where I talk with different golfers, around the World on how they play golf and of course where they play golf, it was a great pleasure to be joined by our very first Canadian guest on the Hole In One Golf podcast Matthew Moffatt. As well as being a school teacher and also newly married (check out their story here: Mr & Mrs ) Matt has still found time over the past 11 years to support and work at The Trafalgar Golf and Country Club in Milton, Ontario, Canada. This is very close to Toronto and is great golfing country, as there are many other great courses in close proximity such as Royal Ontario and many others. Matt is currently working as an assistant in the professional shop at Trafalgar but he’s also worked on the course, the range and in the clubhouse. You could say that Matt has a really special family connection to the golf club, his entire family also work at Trafalgar Golf & Country club and his Grandfather was also the club’s engraver! Matt’s new wife Mary, had never played Golf before but Matt is now of course getting Mary into Golf and they are sharing some great Golfing memories together! Matt tells some awesome #golfingtales from the Trafalgar Golf Club and we also discuss how the club bounced back from a fire which destroyed the Clubhouse, how they tackled #COVID19 and actually had their most successful year to date! We also discuss Trafalgar’s awesome junior programme which has produced some serious talent recently. The club is also home to major winner Sandra Post . Matt also tells me the benefits of using Club Link and I try and get my head around only playing Golf for 6 months of the year, as well as the course having many many holes in one as well as eagles, albatrosses and cayotes!

In this episode, it was great catching up with an old friend - Jonathan Williams from Morlais Castle Golf Club in South Wales. Jon is a life golfer like myself. He’s a super passionate golfer who is great at getting the best out of teams and of course is also a really proud Welshman! I’ve been fortunate enough to play with Jonathan a number of times and he’s now the Channel League Manager for the Glamorgan County Golf Team in South Wales and Jon tells me in more detail about what he’s achieved with Glamorgan.
Jon shares some of his future goals, as well as a few #golfingtales such as the time he played (and was winning at one stage) against European Tour and World Cup winner Bradley Dredge, as an amateur. He also tells me about the highly successful Sion Bebb Invitational Tournament he helped organise at very short notice, which featured players such as LPGA player Amy Boulden and Ryder Cup star Phil Price! We also discuss whether Wales will finally get the British Open and the upcoming Ladies British Open due to be held at my home club Royal Porthcawl, Wales. Jon also did very well in answering a few very tough questions I put to him! Thanks very much for your time Jon and best of luck with the Glamorgan team, hopefully they will go on to win the Channel league in 2021!

Hi, welcome to the Hole In One Golf Podcast! I’m your host Jack Bull. In this episode, it was awesome speaking with a great golfer and long drive expert - Dan Crook who is based in Auckland, New Zealand. Although Dan has been clocked in long drive tournaments smashing the ball over 400 yards with a driver, it's in his studio - Sport Fit DC , where he really loves helping a variety of athletes train specifically for their sport, including golfers. Dan is extremely knowledgeable on the golf swing and he’s trained in “MYTPI” as well as biomechanics and personal training, so he can assess a golfer's limitations and work with them both online and in person to improve their swing and measure their success. Dan shares plenty of insights into how we can all improve, which I found mind blowing, for instance, his best athlete, either professional or amateur only ranks a 4 handicap in biomechanics compared to over plus 4 in golf terms, that gives you an idea of the potential gains that can easily be made in this field.
In this episode, Insta Sport Fit DC covers:-
· The most common mistakes we all make
· Best warm up routines which will help all golfers improve
· The most important muscles to train
· Best exercises for Golf and best equipment to use
· Differences between Golf and Long Drive
· Advice for juniors
· How to hit it further
· Tiger’s adverse running
Dan is also part of the NZ team which founded Grid Chasers, a series of NZ Long Drive Tournaments Grid Chasers .You can also check out the hole in one golf podcast Instagram and facebook pages for more videos and tips from Dan, as well as highlights from this episode. In the Greatest Goats, Legends of Golf- Episode #3- Angel Cabrera, we’ll firstly listen to Welsh Golfer Llewellyn Matthews recalling the time he played in the 2007 British Open at Carnoustie and met legendary club designer Bob Vokey and then he recalls playing a practice round with the then US Open Champion Angel Cabrera from Argentina. This story really puts into perspective Cabrera's mighty power game. Cabrera once said that while other players had psychologists, he just smoked! Cabrera is a well know chain smoker and is also known to enjoy great wine and steak!

Joining me in this episode is a great golfer, an amazing leader and a friend who I played golf with growing up and saw as a great mentor. Today, I had the great opportunity of speaking with Andy Ingram, who after a very promising Amateur golf career, took some twists and turns before coming back into Golf, joining the Welsh Team as a selector and sensationally guiding them to their first ever win in the Home Internationals in 2002 at Royal St David’s, Harlech. He would go on to captain many other successful International Golf teams, including the Junior Ryder Cup as well as the 2017 GB &I Walker team for the match against U.S.A held at the famous LACC in Los Angeles. The 2017 Walker Cup Team included stand out players such as Cameron Champ, Collin Morikawa & Stewart Hagestad for USA, while the GB & I team featured the likes of Robert Macintyre, Jack Singh Brar and Connor Syme. Andy shares details of his amazing career with me and tells many wonderful stories featuring various celebrities, as well as plenty of insights into the game, as well as breaking some very surprising news indeed! I’m sure you’ll really enjoy this episode!

In this episode, I was extremely fortunate to chat with a highly successful Professional Golfer, who I am a huge fan of! A tour winner from the age of 18, the youngest female to first win $1million in earnings at the age of 20 and a 3 time Solheim cup player, who is still as hungry and driven to succeed as when she turned pro at 18. She is also an author, blogger, golf broadcaster and a huge voice for change. Joining me today is the truly inspirational Christina Kim, who is famously known across social media as “The Christina Kim”. What’s even more impressive than her incredible career, is the openness, authenticity and honesty that she shares with everyone around her, as well as sharing openly the ups and downs that she has faced throughout her career, coming out the other side and talking openly about them now.

Welcome to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, I'm your host Jack Bull. In season #3 Episode #1, it was great chatting to #amateurgolfer, #golfvlogger & #golfcoursereviewer Sam Wadley, on some of the great #nzgolfcourses he has been playing lately which look absolutely stunning! I recently got Sam on the #holeinonegolfpodcast #golfpodcast and he tells me the story of how he ended up moving to #newzealand with his Kiwi wife and is now taking full advantage, by playing many of the great courses New Zealand has to offer and Sam wants to play all of them on his #golfingjourney! He’s definitely come to the right place here, as #NewZealand ranks #2 in the World for the most courses per person (Scotland is ranked #1 unsurprisingly! ). Sam talks me through the joy of playing at the #hastingsgolfclub http://www.hastingsgolfclub.co.nz/ which is a great NZ course, as well as the World famous Cape Kidnappers Golf Course down in the Hawke’s Bay, Lower North Island, New Zealand, which is a truly wonderful part of the World! Sam also tells me more about his recent visit to #maraenuigolfcourse https://www.maraenuigolf.co.nz/ and also how his game is tracking post #lockdown2020 and explain his goals this year!
Golf Digest ranks #capekidnappers as the #22 best Golf Course in the World! Not but huh https://www.golfdigest.com/story/worlds-100-greatest-golf-courses . The Golf Course was designed in 2004, by the famous #golfarchitect #tomdoak and traverses the cliffs some 500 feet above the South Pacific Ocean, needless to say, the views are absolutely breath taking and #capekidnappers is a must visit #bucketlist #golfcourse for all serious golfers! According to Newzealand.com the Cape Kidnappers Golf Course is only the 2nd biggest attraction on the cliffs overlooking the Hawke’s bay- after the World’s largest land Gannet Colony which is also worth a visit! https://www.newzealand.com/int/feature/cape-kidnappers/. The name itself Cape Kidnappers refers to Captain Cook’s encounter with some of the locals and the Te Reo Maori name: Te Kauwae-a-Māui means the "The Fish Hook of Maui”

In Episode #2 of the "The Greatest GOATs" Legends of Golf Series, I take a look at Lee Trevino who is a real character and legend of the game, winning an incredible 6 majors, although the Masters Tournament eluded him and he famously boycotted the tournament 3 times. In 1975, Trevino was hit by lightning at a tournament (almost killing him) and it effected his Golf for the rest of his career, although he still won the 1984 PGA, his final major. I am also joined by Golf Professional, Alastair Jones, who tells me a wonderful story from when he personally met Lee Trevino at the famous Preston Trail Golf Course in Dallas, Texas, USA.

Ben Hogan was known as "The Hawk" due to his fierce concentration and huge competitiveness. I myself am a true "Hogan- O- phile" and in this first part, I will talk about why Hogan is still held in almost God Like status still to this day amongst Golf Professionals and amateurs World Wide. I will refer to a few must read books which I have read and that all golfers should read; The modern fundamentals of Golf, Power Golf & Hogan (Sampson) are all absolute classics.

In episode 8, part 2, highly renowned Welsh Golfer- Alastair Jones, tells me how he narrowly lost in the quarter finals of the British Amateur in 2011. Such was the regard that Alastair was held in British Amateur golf at the time, after winning both the Welsh Youths and Welsh Amateur title in 2010, that when he was not included in one of the 2011 Welsh teams, it was front page sports news across Wales on numerous occasions:
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/other-sport/golf/golf-alastair-jones-shock-absentee-1828000
Predictably, after Alastair’s best in class Welsh performance as a Quarter finalist at the British Amateur that year, the Welsh sports writers heaped further misery on the Welsh selectors across the sports pages once again!
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/other-sport/golf/golf-alastair-jones-proves-point-1828014
With his fine British Amateur performance that year and wins in the Welsh Amateur and Youths title the prior year, he was invited to join the 2011 Walker Cup training squad, led by legendary Welsh Amateur Nigel Edwards. Alastair talks about his fellow 2011 Walker Cup squad members, what he learnt from Walker Cup legend and 2011 Walker captain Nigel Edwards who instilled great belief in the team and GB & I won with a team featuring British Open Silver Medalist Tom Lewis and future Ryder Cup player and Tour winner Andy Sullivan, against a very strong USA team featuring players like Jordan Spieth. After cruising through the amateur golf ranks and enjoying a highly successful college career, Alastair continued to improve each year and took the plunge into the paid professional ranks, joining the Euro Pro tour and he talks openly about the realities of tour life and the huge pressure. After a couple of years on tour, Alastair then received an irresistible offer to join Preston Trail Golf Club, back in Dallas, Texas, USA, under Cameron Doan. Alastair shares his insights into the amazing programme at Preston Trail and the great mentorship he and other players receive from Cameron Doan. We talked about the high standard of sport and weather in my adopted home country New Zealand. Alastair shares insights on bench marking a high standard of achievement and how to play at that level and talks openly about the shift, he also offers advice on how to improve and what he learnt from mentor Nigel Edwards and how he also developed his game and proved others wrong! We also talk about going back home to Royal Porthcawl and Alastair talks about the British Senior Open which is held there. Thanks very much for your time Alastair, I look forward to you joining me again on the podcast for more of your superb insights!

Many times in Golf (love & life!) we hear people talk about “The One that got away”, like in episode #3 of this podcast with Mike Hearne and his infamous “Tiger King” podcast. In this episode though, I share with you a podcast with Welsh Golf Professional Alastair Jones that should have got away but didn’t! For a long time, many fellow golfers told me that Alastair couldn’t be reached and wasn’t available for any podcast interviews and this caused quite a bit of intrigue given his fame. After calling in a lead from an old contact (thanks Dad!) I was able to get in touch with Alastair and he shared his story with me and also told me about one colossal match that also "didn’t get away" from him!
I finally reached Alastair, in Dallas, Texas (USA), where he is currently attached to one of the most exclusive Golf Clubs in the World - the Preston Trail Golf Club. The Club is famous for being Byron Nelson’ s home club, as well as hosting the Byron Nelson Classic PGA tournament from 1968- 1982, this was a true golden era of golf, seeing the likes of Niklaus, Palmer, Player & Watson.
Former president George Bush is also one of the most distinguished members along with many other famous Americans including many famous golfers, hockey players and other sports stars and celebrities.
Alastair’s father, Ron Jones, was a well known sports journalist in Wales and he introduced Alastair to the game at Radyr Golf Club in Cardiff (UK) and they started playing together. Later on, Alastair also joined my home course Royal Porthcawl (South Wales, UK), which gave him the experience of playing a top links course and this would really prepare him later on for a career run in the British Amateur, as well as claiming the Welsh crown at Tenby. With Royal Porthcawl being a Senior Open Championship venue, Alastair tells me he has had some great conversations with many pros in America, regarding how great a course Royal Porthcawl is! Royal Porthcawl is regarded as the best Golf Course in Wales and is a top 50 course in the UK. Alastair won the Club Championship there, which is no mean feat, following in the footsteps of great players such as John Jermine and Rhys Davies.
In 2010, Alastair would go on to achieve a feat that no other Welsh player ever had, in winning the Welsh Youth’s and Welsh Amateur Championships in the same year. Alastair shares with me how he achieved a remarkable second place finish in the 2011 British Amateur Qualifying around Hillside and Hesketh and the story of his titanic matchplay battle with Findland’s Toni Hakula in 2011, Hakula was also a British Amateur finalist in 2013.

It was great catching up once again with Welsh Amateur Golf Legend Llewellyn Matthews, who tells me what life looks like in Wales now the lockdown is starting to ease. Following some late night zoom conversations towards the end of lockdown, with the rest of the Glamorgan team, he tells me how himself and team manager Jonathan Williams managed to hustle together the "Sion Bebb Invitational Tournament" at the famous Morlais Castle Golf Club in South Wales, a hybrid 18 holes pro-am tournament. Despite the fact they had less than 2 weeks to arrange the tournament from scratch they still managed to get various Mens and Ladies European tour professionals to play in the event with the likes of Ryder Cup Winner Phillip Price, Ladies Tour Winner Amy Boulden and World Cup Winner Bradley Dredge, as well as the leading male and female amateurs from across Wales. Ladies European Tour Player Amy Boulden won the event with a highly impressive 67. Llew also tells me more about the famous Tillman Trophy and the other amateur events coming up and we even managed to discuss Ben Hogan playing the small 1.62 inch ball when he won the British Open in 1953 in his one and only appearance. Diolch yn Fawr Llew, until next time!

Joining me is an absolutely incredible athlete and Professional Golfer from Auckland, New Zealand- Phillis Meti, who is also the world record holder for the longest drive by a woman ever, at an incredible 413 yards! Phillis has been crowned the very best in the World, winning the World Championship of Women’s Long Drive an amazing 3 times! Phillis shares her incredible story with me, starting with how she played sport from a young age, with coaching and encouragement from both of her parents, who really helped her, as well as growing sport in their wider community as well. Phillis began competing in the highly physical paddelling sport of “Waka Ama” https://teara.govt.nz/en/waka-ama-outrigger-canoeing, as well as elite level netball and athletics. Phillis went on to represent New Zealand at the Junior Commonwealth Games in 2004, competing in the discuss and shot putt, placing 8th and 4th respectively. http://www.olympic.org.nz/athletes/phillis-meti/Phillis realised she wasn’t quite as strong as her friend and rival Valerie Adams (4 times World shot putt Champion) though, who stands an impressive 6 ft 4 inches, while Phillis said she topped out at 5 ft 11! Phillis’s father was a keen golfer and helped get her into the sport, where she represented the Auckland region “North Harbour”. When Phillis was 19 years old, her mother suggested she compete in the 2006 World Long drive championships. Phillis smacked the ball 326 yards to win the event on her first try and become World Champion! Phillis shares with me plenty of great tips on how to hit the ball further and provides some great advice from her mentors and also discusses her mindset when competing. She also talks more about some of the ups and downs of competing in long drive, as well as the large gender pay gap in long drive, compared to other sports such as Tennis. Phillis also shares her exciting goals and ambitions. Thanks very much for your time Phillis, it was an absolute pleasure hearing your story and best of luck for your next season!

In episode #5, it was great chatting to an old friend and former team mate from Royal Porthcawl, in Wales- Jonathan Bale, this week who is now based in Baton Rouge USA. He talks me through how he ended up staying on in the USA and the disadvantages of riding Golf Carts when it comes to playing golf back in Wales! He also shares some brilliant advice on what to do when you finish college. Jonathan started out as a junior at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club and steadily improved under the guidance of club Professional Peter Evans, getting his handicap lower and winning club competitions, before performing well in Glamorgan events. After studying at Pen-Coed College and working part time at the golf club, Jonathan was offered a golf scholarship to Louisiana Tech, USA. At college, he worked extremely hard on his physical and mental game under coach Jean Hall and his golf game rapidly improved. On return to Wales, he was selected into the men’s team at the home internationals. After his degree had finished, he leveraged the advice of senior mentors and decided to remain an amateur and obtain his MBA. He would continue to work stateside, in the wealth management industry, whilst continuing to play amateur golf at the highest level. In 2016, Jonathan returned home to play in the Welsh Amateur and came agonisingly close when he had to withdraw in the Semi Final due to injury, with Zach Galliford (Borth and Ynyslas) taking the title, beating Owen Edwards (Lanwern) in the final. In 2019, Jonathan qualified for one of the toughest amateur tournaments in the world- the US Mid Amateur, before reaching the final 32. Jon was recently voted one of the top 5 LA Tech Golf athletes of the last decade and plans to play much more tournament golf with his game still being in great shape. I look forward to seeing you hit the big amateur events post #lockdown2020, thanks for your time Jonathan!

It was great catching up with former Welsh player and tour professional Alex Smith who is now the director of golf at the IPGA golf academy, based in Bangkok, Thailand. For a long time, as a junior and youth player, Alex was the man to beat in Wales, winning the under 13’s and under 15’s Welsh titles, European Youth's team championship and also helping the Welsh Men's team achieve something that no other Welsh team ever has in 2002. Alex started playing at the Rhondda Golf Club and later joined Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club as a 15 year old to experience the strong competitive environment and play and practice on a tough links course. We started off discussing the current environment and how Alex got into Golf. He goes on to talk more about competing with some of the best Amateurs in the World, getting through the gruelling first stage of European Tour Qualifying school, before moving into a very successful coaching career, based in Asia. We compare players that Alex competed against such as Graeme McDowell who won the 2010 US Open, to the newer type of players and discuss in more detail how his players can develop the game and the mindset to compete against the best players in the World in 2020 and beyond.

Podcast #lockdown2020 #golfingtales #3 Mike Hearne
It was a pleasure chatting with Mike Hearne, an amateur Golfer who represented Wales at the home Internationals and went on to play in the 2014 Eisenhower Trophy in Japan. Mike moved across the pond on a prized golf scholarship to attend Southern Nazarene University at Oklahoma City, USA. Mike had a big shock on arrival. In 2014, he won 6 out of the 9 tournaments he entered. Mike was then selected to play for Wales in the Home Internationals, European men’s event and World Amateur team championship – “The Eisenhower Trophy” in Japan. Competing against the very best players in the World was a jump in standard, playing against the likes of John Rham and Bryson De Chambeau. Mike talks openly about the huge shift in mindset required to compete against the best players in the World. He was then invited to play in his first Professional event at the Wales Open around The Celtic Manor Resort (Wales, UK), with well know tour pro caddy Lee Griffiths on the bag and home fans in the crowd! Mike is open about needing to really capitalise as much as possible on these opportunities at the time. Back in the USA, Mike was playing and winning some money but faced with the mini tours, Mike decided to remain a top amateur, taking the opportunity to remain stateside and build a career in real estate. In 2017, Mike showcased his talent near his new home when he reached the semi finals of the Oklahoma Amateur, beating the holder. Mike went on to qualify for the American Mid Amateur Championship, which only the top 500 amateur players in the World are eligible for without grabbing one of the few spots available through regional qualifying.
Mike talks about the benefits of hosting the Podcast he has set up “This is Oklahoma”, to meet new people and pique their brains, interviewing NBA players, cross fit athletes, the producer of the “The Godfather” and hundreds of other interesting people. Mike goes on to talk about some of the opportunities compared to the UK, the huge differences in the American Golf mindset, attacking golf and going “low”. He talks about Public golf courses in America, and the benefits of playing US golf courses. He talks me through one particular podcast meeting down at the infamous “Tiger King” empire. Mike shares some amazing golf stories, including one with top amateurs Ben Westgate and Walker Cup winner Jimmy Mullen, while Mike and Ben were playing for Glamorgan. Thanks for your time Mike, I really enjoyed catching up and best of luck for your return to competitive golf! Highly regarded PGA, LPGA and European Tour Golf coach Matthew Tipper, shares his journey with me, starting in the small Welsh town of Porthcawl (UK) where he’s originally from and leading to a World Wide career in professional golf. He started out representing Wales at National level cricket as a teenager, then began a career in law, before following his true passion and embarking on a teaching career in professional golf, firstly as assistant professional at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in South Wales, under head professional Peter Evans, before qualifying as a PGA professional at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club under Robert Evans. Matthew put the really hard yards in, working for the highly prestigious David Leadbetter Golf academy and further learning his trade under the great golf master himself. His first professional job was in Dubai for 2 years, before helping to set up a brand new teaching academy in Portugal for a year. He then worked in China for 4 years, then spent 1 year in Hong Kong and 1 year in Korea, before heading to Poland and finally after 16 years, he is now back in the UK, where he uses Goodwood as a base. His Global Academy takes him all around the World, travelling and coaching students! Matthew shares his insights into what it takes to be a world class Golf coach and then explains the huge jump from amateur golf into tour professional golf, explaining what ingredients are required in terms of culture and work ethic and the massive commitment required to make it on tour. Matthew discusses what the benefits of gaining entry into the American College Golf system can afford his players, what his players get out of the system and the importance of building the player as well as the person. He provides insights into his work with tour players, focussing on the short game and highlights the need for players to also build fitness, strength, psychology and statistics with experts in their field, as part of the player’s team. Matthew has coached numerous World class golfers and talks more about assisting the hugely talented Adrian Meronk achieve a semi final position at the 121st British Amateur around Royal Porthcawl in 2016, before narrowly losing to the winner Scott Gregory, who also went on to beat Robert MacIntyre. Adrian has now become Poland’s first ever European Tour player! Crucially important to his mentoring, is developing the correct “culture” to develop the player, which is one of high performance, hard work and sticking to the plan. Matthew talks about making small improvements everyday and every week and building on it over time. Not over focussing on winning. Too many players have a “finite mindset” and it badly effects their judgement. Matthew talks openly about #mentalhealthissues on the tour and speaks about golfers feeling depressed. Matthew has developed a “book club” with his players which helps them grow mentally stronger and become happier people, which in turn leads to better golf!

Joining me is an old friend and former Glamorgan team mate Llewellyn Matthews from Southerndown Golf Club (Wales, UK). Llew is regarded as one of Wales’ greatest ever Amateur Golfers, having won the Welsh Amateur title back to back in 2006 and again in 2007, the first player to achieve this since the legendary JR Jones (Langland Bay) in the mid 1980s. He tells me how he quickly rose through the ranks at Southerndown Golf Club where there was a large & highly competitive junior section. He learnt from the senior mentors around him and leveraged rivalries with fellow juniors, playing up to 54 holes a day. Llewellyn really got into his Tournament Golf career at the famous “Duncan Putter” Tournament, held annually at his home club Southerndown GC, aged 16, being fortunate to watch many great GB & I Walker Cup players such as Simon Dyson and Gary Wolstenholme MBE. Southerndown is a superb links Golf Course in South Wales (UK), laid out in 1905 and then redesigned in 1918 by the famous course designer Harry Shapland Colt. His job was to make it play easier! https://www.southerndowngolfclub.com/…/course-history-colts… Late in 2005, Llewellyn won his first professional tournament as an amateur, at a local event at St. Pierre golf club, winning by a remarkable 7 shots. Llewellyn would then rise to prominence on the World Stage by winning the qualifying at the 2006 British Amateur at Royal St George's and reaching the final 16 after beating Richie Ramsay in the first round (Richie went on to win the US Amateur that year). Later that summer, he narrowly edged his good friend Rhys Davies on the 36th green around Pyle and Kenfig to take his first Welsh Amateur title. Llewellyn won the 2007 St. Andrews Links Trophy, sealing his biggest tournament win, smashing the tournament record with a total of 273, -15 under over 4 rounds and setting his sights on British Open qualification. On arrival at Monifieth, he discovered 200 players going for 3 spots but he seized his chance to grab 1 of the spots at the 136th Open Championship where Padraig Harrington would go on to win his first major, after beating Sergio Garcia in a playoff. Llewellyn enjoyed a practice round with US Open Champion Angel Cabrera. He was then drawn with future World Number One Luke Donald and Charles Howell III. After winning his second Welsh Amateur title in 2007, he earnt a highly coveted spot on the 41st Walker Cup Team, held at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. The 2007 Walker Cup Team on both sides would go down in retrospect as perhaps the strongest sides of all time, featuring players such as Rory Mc Ilroy, Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, Ricky Fowler and Danny Willet.
