Today we are joined by activist and author of Fck It: A Guide to Letting Go & Living Free, Charlo Greene where we discussed Charlo's book and her story. This program features a Spot of Culture piece entitled: A Preface to Fck It: A Guide to Letting Go & Living Free.
We discussed the current state of democracy in the US with Dr. Steven Miller, associate professor of political science at Clemson University.
Between October 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018, at least 2,700 children have been split from their parents. 1,995 of them were separated over the last six weeks of that window — April 18 to May 31, an average of 45 children per day.
Today we were joined by Ximena Ospina, undocu-queer activist and Columbia Student and Reverend Billy, Bikes for Deportation Founder to discuss immigration, activism and the ways allies of undocumented immigrants can help fight against the inhumane Trump Administration's family separation policy. In honor of pride month, we explored the intersections of identity which exist within the gay community featuring documentary film makers, Aaron Paul Lovett and Kevin O'brien.
In the first half, we talked about MOMIX. The company of dance illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton, brings its latest mix of multi-media magic to New York this summer at The Joyce Theater in New York City from July 24 – August 12.
Followed by a review of the film,bias, and the pressing question of whether or not we can de-bias ourselves.
There are four horizontal black lines with white gaps creating musical staff lines there are no notes just white, empty quiet space. But if you look closely, you’ll find on the lowest staff line a smudge. A Louuud smudge. This is the enchanting music of sign. Artist Christine Sun Kim was born deaf; she thought for the longest time that sound wasn’t a part of her life and what would have been an obstacle in her career as an artist became the center of her art. Because like ASL, music is “highly special and highly inflected meaning that subtle changes can affect the entire meaning of both signs and sounds.”
There is girl of a petite frame walking over cobblestones to get to class with literal weight on her shoulders. She climbs low steps and walks past the Alma Mater who has been defaced by red tape time and time again. This girl, Emma Sulcowicz carried the blue mattress as a symbol of the burden a victim of sexual assault carries and as a protest against Columbia University for shrouding this case in secrecy.
Art is loud.
