Today our guest is Abigail Munn the Artistic Director of Circus Bella.

(Interview begins at 6:30)

Cirus Bella Web Site

Since its inception, Abigail Munn has been directing, creating, and producing new work for Circus Bella. Along with the more conventional duties she has also served as the company's truck driver, catering service and laundress. An accomplished dancer, choreographer, and aerialist, Munn holds a BFA in Modern Dance from UC Santa Barbara. As a child, born and raised in SF, she appeared with the Pickle Family Circus, and with Zoppe Italian Family Circus, Lone Star Circus, the Moisture Festival, the New Pickle Circus, Cabaret Verdelet, Circus Cabaret, Tease-O-Rama, Va Voom Room, and The Velvet Hammer Burlesque. Munn was commended in the NY Times for her performance in Alma Esperanza Cunningham’s Princess. Munn co-directed the nouveau-vaudeville troupe Kitty Bang, an internationally recognized three-time “Best of the Bay” winner that is influential in the modern Burlesque resurgence.

Over the past few years Abigail has become increasingly involved in advocacy work for the Circus Arts. When transitioning Circus Bella performers to Employees, she became aware that the current workers compensation rates and policy descriptions in California were way out of step with the current reality of the Circus Industry. Munn embarked on a one-woman quest to help change this and after initiating a study from the Workers Comp Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB), rates were significant lowered (by 80%) for ALL Circus Companies in CA. In addition, she is a founding member and on the board of the American Circus Alliance.

Today, I am delighted to have Cassidy Brown as my guest. He is a highly acclaimed actor based in San Francisco and has graced the stages of various theaters throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including Berkeley Rep, SF Playhouse, Theatreworks, and many more. Besides his acting career, Cassidy is also a co-host of the podcast "All the Answers," which delves into the fascinating connection between performing arts and spirituality.

Currently, Cassidy is busy rehearsing for the "Tea Party," a riveting play by Gordon Dahlquist, which is being directed by the talented Erin Merritt. In this 90-minute comedy thriller, "Tea Party," Cassidy along with the rest of the cast portray the logical consequences of violent political rhetoric in America's near future. With its taut and sophisticated storyline, "Tea Party" promises to be an enthralling and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

Scrumbly Koldewyn (Ensemble/Musical Director/Piano) started performing, composing, directing for the Cockettes at the inception and has been managing to survive by performing, composing, writing & musical directing in musical theater and cabaret. After the Cockettes, some of his most active groups/projects have been: Rickettes, Tale Spinners (4 productions), Theater Workers (4 productions), The Distractions, The Jesters (3 European Tours), Dirty Little Show Tunes, NCTC [8 productions], Stagebridge, and the Thrillpeddlers’ Cockette’s Revivals & sequels [8 productions] and segments of Shocktoberfests [5].

History: The Cockette’s sprawling, kaleidoscopic pantheon of colorful personalities included icons including: Hibiscus and Sylvester, and was often augmented by special guests, most notably drag superstars Divine & Mink Stole. The Cockettes were ahead of their time, especially in the acceptance of gender fluidity and glittered beards, and they changed the face of drag forever.

Although the Cockettes disbanded in 1972, its many members kept the group’s spirit alive; in 2009, a theater troupe called the Thrillpeddlers helmed by Russell Blackwood revived a legendary Cockettes show called Pearls Over Shanghai to much acclaim and a long 22 month run. Playing on the interest already garnered by David Weissman & Bill Weber’s The Cockettes documentary released in 2002, interest in this troupe was reawakened and entertained an entirely new & appreciative audience. Over the next decade, The Thrillpeddlers continued recreating Cockette shows under the watchful eye of the original songwriter and Cockette Scrumbly Koldewyn.

Walk and Talk with your host. The Frankensteinization of the minority.

View Details

Come and see FRANKENSTEIN at Ohlone College in Fremont, California.

The slogan "It's Alive" brings to mind images of a giant monster slowly approaching, with silver wires protruding from its neck. The Ohlone College Theatre and Dance department is putting a spooky twist on Mary Shelley's classic 1818 novel Frankenstein. This is the perfect event for you if you're looking for a good scare after Halloween. This new adaptation by Nick Dear and directed by Michael Navarra tells the classic story from the creature's perspective, bringing a new and more poetic perspective to the tale. Frankenstein's creature is childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form. He is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes and increasingly desperate and vengeful, he determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. The story highlights the importance of scientific responsibility, cognitive development, and the nature of good and evil through a thrilling and deeply disturbing gothic tale. Audiences will get a chance to see this masterpiece beginning November 11 at the Smith Center.

The Tony Award-Winning SAN FRANCISCO MIME TROUPE Debuts a NEW Activist Adaptation of the Dickens Classic as a Radio Play

A RED CAROL

An Activist Adaptation of the Dickens Classic

Written and Directed by Michael Gene Sullivan

Begins streaming FREE on Fri. Nov. 26, 2021 - Jan. 9, 2022 (donations accepted)

For the first time the SF Mime Troupe presents a Holiday Audio offering with a worker’s take on the Dicken’s classic in A Red Carol. With its particular blend of activism, comedy, music, and passion the SFMT's labor-oriented adaptation of Dickens "A Christmas Carol” reclaims this revolutionary classic as a story not of the redemption of one bad man, but as the never-ending story of all of us making the world a more progressive place.

In A Red Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a corporate banker, busy foreclosing on the hapless masses. Bob Cratchit and his beleaguered family live in a chilly tent in an anonymous homeless encampment. The ghost of Christmas future sports a flowing black robe of taped-together trash bags and plastic sheeting. Tiny Tim dies. At least that’s how the SF Mime Troupe’s resident playwright, Michael Gene Sullivan, has reimagined A Red Carol for the troubled 21st century.

A Christmas Carol” has become “the closest thing to a modern myth that we have. It wasn’t much of a stretch to place Charles Dickens’ Victorian classic into today’s Covid-19 world. And that, as Sullivan would be the first to tell you, is exactly the point. Dickens’ novella was written in the heart of the “Hungry ’40s,” a time of labor unrest, unemployment and starvation across 19th-century Europe. The gap between rich and poor was wide - and getting ever wider.

With the limited release of A Red Carol, the San Francisco Mime Troupe hopes it will become an annual alternative holiday tradition for the workers of the world.

For more information visit www.sfmt.org or call 415-285-1717.

CRITICS SAY “The play, in its skewering of America’s social ills—racism, corporate greed, the plight of the working class—is so funny, and so well acted by the Troupe, including longtime ensemble members Velina Brown, Keiko Shimosato-Carreiro and Brian Rivera , that it comes to life even without visuals and minus the appreciative laughter of a sun-soaked audience. The second half of “The Mystery of the Missing Worker” airs Aug. 29.”

SF Examiner - July 6, 2020

“As a spoof of serials past, it’s solid, quick-witted, and sets the bar high for subsequent episodes, which will satirize other radio-drama templates—namely adventure, horror, and science fiction."

KQED - July 8, 2020

Today's very special guests are the quadruple threats Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo. You may remember them from the acclaimed TV show, American Idol as they both made the finals and wowed the country.

Diana and Ace, married for eight years, are about to debut in the on-line production of "First Date: The Virtual Broadway Musical" The show will be avaiable from Friday, July 23, 2021 until July 25, 2021.

Get your tickets here!

_____________________________________

First Date Summary

Don’t miss the virtual Broadway musical revival of FIRST DATE, streaming exclusively on Stellar for five performances only: July 23-25

Starring ‘‘American Idol’’ alumni (and real-life married couple) ACE YOUNG and DIANA DEGARMO, and featuring KEVIN MASSEY (A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder), JENNIFER SÁNCHEZ(Pretty Woman: The Musical), NICK CEARLEY (‘‘The Skivvies’’), VISHAL VAIDYA (Groundhog Day) and AURELIA WILLIAMS (In Transit).

FIRST DATE tells the story of Aaron (YOUNG) and Casey (DEGARMO), two single New Yorkers on a blind date with nothing to lose, except maybe their patience and sanity. This hilariously relatable musical puts you right at the bar along with them--and all the persistent voices in their heads. While they fight the urge to call it a no-go, they suffer through every dating faux pas in the book, from awkward silences to rambling about their exes to panicking over their past. But in the end, they can’t help but be curious about their chances at a second date…and maybe even finding love.

With an irresistible, contemporary pop Broadway score, and filled with those cringeworthy yet priceless moments that might feel all-too familiar, FIRST DATE lets us know it’s all part of the wonderful process of finding the perfect partner.

_____________

Diana DeGarmo is a singer, songwriter, and full-out entertainer, from stage to screen, Diana DeGarmo has conquered it all and then some. Her powerhouse vocals shot her to fame on American Idol and opened doors to her numerous Broadway & Off-Broadway shows, National & International Tours, a recurring role on The Young & The Restless, and much more. Listen to her newest musical creation GEMINI anywhere you find fine music.

Ace Young is a man of many talents and has the credits to back them up. Even before his multiple #1 hits as a songwriter, Ace was wowing millions on TV shows like American Idol and Half & Half. His Grammy-Nominated song “It’s Not Over” gave way to his own BMI Pop Award and many other songwriting acclaims. Ace has starred on stages around the world from Broadway in HAIR and GREASE, touring the country in JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and US Aircraft Carriers across the Oceans with the USO. His next chapter of artistry has him sitting in the producer, writer, and artist’s chairs, for his newest acoustic album Up All Night.”

This is a repeat of my chat with Alex Bennett.

Alex Bennett is an American radio personality and talk show host, known for his mix of left-wing politics and humor. He currently hosts a show Tues-Fri on GABNet.net at 10pm ET.

Bennett was born in San Francisco and adopted his on-air name as a tribute to his late father, Alexander Schwarzmann.

During the 1960s, Bennett worked at radio stations around the country, including KILT in Houston, where he used the on-air moniker James Bond and did his show using an English accent, and WLOL in Minneapolis, before gaining major market attention in 1969 at WMCA in New York. He initially started as a disk jockey, later evolving into a talk show host during the station's transition from its Top 40 "Good Guys" music format to the pioneering "Dial-Log" all-talk era. Bennett brought a progressive rock radio sensibility to the teenage-oriented station, still playing album cuts of music as his talk show evolved, and openly discussing topics ranging from his love life to his participation in various countercultural events, such as Consciousness III, before giving his Yogic sign-off "Namaste" ("The God within me sees the God within you"). In 1969, Bennett flew to London to investigate the rumor of Paul McCartney’s death. He later became friends with John Lennon, who appeared on his show.

In 1970, Bennett and his wife-producer Ronni moved their show to WPLJ, still in New York. By late 1971 the couple split. Ronni went on to produce for ABC’s 20/20 and Barbara Walters. Today, she writes a blog on aging and what it's really like to get old, Time Goes By.[1] Guests on Bennett's WPLJ show included rock stars, comedians, and left-wing, anti-war activists.

An early video pioneer, Bennett produced Midnight Blue with Al Goldstein of Screw magazine for a New York public access cable channel.

In 1980, Bennett returned to his native San Francisco to host a morning show for album-oriented rock station KMEL. Bennett found success by featuring standup comedians as his guests. Before they became famous, performers Bob Goldthwait, Whoopi Goldberg, Dana Carvey, Ray Romano, and Jay Leno were guests on Bennett's program. The popular show aired on three San Francisco area radio stations throughout the 1980s and 1990s: KMEL, KQAK, and KITS. The Alex Bennett Show changed stations due to management/consultant conflicts (KMEL), a format flip (KQAK), and, finally, a station ownership change (at KITS, where he did two stints). Bennett also briefly hosted talk shows on KNBR in San Francisco and WIOD in Miami, Florida (the latter, a very sour experience), in between his Bay Area morning show gigs. During the 1980s, Bennett was the original host of public television’s Comedy Tonight.

While at KMEL, Bennett’s mother, Ruth, achieved fame as the world’s oldest album-oriented rock disk jockey when she hosted a Sunday night countdown show on KMEL from 1982 to 1983. Bennett hosted the station’s morning show, and Ruth continued at KMEL for a year after his departure for KQAK. Ruth passed away in 2005 at the age of 100.

The radio show was unique in that it featured a live in-studio audience consisting of listeners who were invited to just walk in off the street. In addition to featuring comedians on his San Francisco radio shows, Bennett produced a number of live comedy shows. The earliest ones included his KMEL/KQAK newsman Joe Regelski and were called "Alex and Joe Shows". He also did remote broadcasts of his morning show, known as "Breakfast with Bennett."

A technology aficionado, Bennett took advantage of the early growth of the World Wide Web. After leaving FM rock radio in the late 1990s, Bennett created an Internet radio show for Play TV that ended when the company went out of business. He also developed an early website, The Surfing Monkey (along with Chuck Farnham, David Biedny and Jesse Montrose), which featured, among other things, a series of articles written by an inmate on Death Row at San Quentin. The prisoner, identified by the pseudonym Dean, reported on daily prison life in a series called “Dead Man Talking”. Bennett is personally opposed to the death penalty. He also voiced the Starbase Commander character in the 1992 release of Star Control 2 by 3DO.

Bennett briefly returned to radio in 2001 to host a technology-oriented midday talk show for CNET Radio at its San Francisco flagship affiliate, KNEW). Bennett's attempt to return to general AM talk radio was hampered by his outspoken left-leaning political views (though he temporarily hosted a morning show on KNEW when they changed their format to a talk format in 2003). Station managers at the time only wanted to hire right-wing talk show hosts.

In 2003, Bennett returned to New York and started his show on Sirius Left on April 19, 2004. He talked about politics, entertainment, and personal matters. He has also served as a substitute for syndicated talk show host Lionel on several occasions and was a frequent pundit on Fox News and MSNBC.

Then in at the end of June 2013 Alex was let go after 9 years with SiriusXM for unknown reasons both to him and his audience.

The following Monday on July 1, 2013 he began GABNet™ a talk network with a new concept for talk where using Skype, he would create a roundtable discussion with up to 9 callers at a time. He dubbed it "talk like you've never heard it before. It survives to this day along with other shows on the network Tues-Fri at 10pm ET at GABNet.net.

  • During his days at Live 105 Alex would have stuntman Chuck Farnham cover himself with food to feed the homeless. This allowed Alex to get around the San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan's ban on feeding the homeless without a permit.

  • One of Bennett's greatest achievements in radio was the invention of "quickies", in which callers have fifteen seconds or less to say anything. The idea was later "borrowed" by both Alan Colmes and Sean Hannity on their radio shows. Bennett recently brought the feature back for his show on Sirius.

  • Bennett had a very bitter rivalry with Howard Stern, whom Bennett claims ripped off his style from the days of Bennett's early New York program. This rivalry intensified when Stern entered the Bay Area market on San Jose’s KOME and eventually replaced Bennett as morning host on KITS in 1998, when CBS took control of the station, fired the on-air staff and moved KOME’s air staff to KITS. Ironically, when Stern signed with Sirius Satellite Radio (where Bennett currently works) in 2004, Bennett praised the move.

At the conclusion of the project’s first “For Your Consideration” GRAMMY® livestream, SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE creator, PABLO ROSSIL, announced two upcoming albums to be released in 2021: SWINGIN’ WITH THE MUSIC OF BROADWAY and

SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE: VOLUME 2.

Shares ROSSIL, “We had such a great time creating the first full record in the SWINGIN’ WITH THE MUSIC recorded series. I am incredibly pleased that so many talented and respected individuals have signed on to join us for next year’s projects. With its inherent elements of storytelling, Broadway is the perfect subject for what we do with jazz. I think people are really going to dig what we’ve come up with! And Disney is, as was proven earlier this year, perfectly translated through what we do with jazz arrangements. I cannot wait to share all of the team’s artistry with the world!”

In March 2021, SWINGIN’ WITH THE MUSIC OF BROADWAY will release on all music streaming platforms. Special guest vocalists have yet to be announced.

In summer 2021, SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE will debut SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE: VOLUME 2, featuring a slate of new Disney songs chosen from films within the Company’s cannon previously unadapted by the SWINGIN’ band. Special guest vocalists to be announced.

SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE: VOLUME 1 features performances by KEITH DAVID (Dr. Facilier in Princess and the Frog), DEEDEE MAGNO HALL (The All-New Mickey

Mouse Club, Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe), EMMA HUNTON (Freeform’s Good Trouble), GARRET CLAYTON (NBC’s Hairspray Live!, Teen Beach Movie), and COURTNEY

REED (Princess Jasmine in Broadway’s Aladdin). The SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE Band includes Nathan King (Woodwinds), Ryan DeWeese (Trumpet), Ramsey Hampton (Trombone), Michael Sobie (Piano), Blake Estrada (Bass), and Jay Tibbitts (Drums).

Stream SWINGIN’ WITH THE MOUSE: VOLUME 1 now on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes. Visit swinginmusic.com to learn more about the project. Follow the group on social

media, @swtmband.

Since 2016, the SWINGIN’ WITH THE MUSIC collective has been reimagining beloved and lesser-known songs with new jazz renditions. Turn on the television, walk down the street, or simply scroll through your favorite app; anywhere you turn, music is there waiting for you. It enhances all aspects of the human experience, and it is SWINGIN’ WITH THE MUSIC’s mission to celebrate what makes music special told through the ever-expressive sounds of jazz.

From singers to musicians and audience members, one thing has always been abundantly clear at SWTM shows: what brings people together is the joys of enjoying a familiar tune in a new way. SWINGIN’ WITH THE MUSIC has played in concert at Feinstein’s/54 Below in New

York and at the Rockwell Table and Stage in Los Angeles.

This is a replay of my thoughts and reflections after a heartfelt run of the play Circle Mirror Transformation at Livermore Arts in November of 2020 - before Covid.

SYNOPSIS

In the small town of Shirley, Vermont, five strangers gather in a dance studio to embark on a unique journey together in a creative drama class for adults. Taught by Marty, their free-spirited and supportive leader, the group -- Schultz, a recently divorced, emotionally vulnerable carpenter, Teresa, an earnest and vibrant former actress, James, Marty’s quiet and genial husband, and Lauren, a reserved and self-conscious high schooler -- move through a series of acting exercises, ranging from the heartbreaking to the ridiculous. In this one small room, through these few seemingly trivial games, quiet wars are waged, emotional wounds are nursed, and healing is finally, slowly, able to begin. In Annie Baker’s quiet masterpiece, Circle Mirror Transformation, the audience takes a transcendent journey through the mundane into the profound.

Today we discuss Ray's addiction to chocolate-covered berries, our current pandemic, and most importantly, we have a special interview with the UK-based musician, Michael Grant.

Michael Grant's Web Site: https://www.michaelgrantmusician.com/

Michael A. Grant is a freelance musician, proficient on clarinets, bassoon, saxophones and flute. He is currently based in Manchester but available for work throughout the universe.

Michael is an experienced performer in a variety of genres, including orchestral music, big band swing, and traditional jazz. He is also in high demand as a reed player for musical theatre productions, on account of his strong sight-reading ability and expertise across multiple instruments.

Furthermore, he is a very capable arranger and orchestrator, as well as a keen composer.

Michael Grant's new Musical: https://www.michaelgrantmusician.com/inrta/

It’s Not Really the Apocalypse’ tells the story of four friends, who wake one day after the mother of all hangovers to discover they are the only humans left on the planet. Over the course of 14 songs they must adapt to their new lifestyle, whilst also overcoming a much greater challenge: learning to live with each other.

This dark subject matter is juxtaposed with a catchy, ragtime-influenced score that is sure to have you tapping your feet and singing along. Armageddon never sounded so good.

What a fun conversation I had with Krista Kammen Lowe and Suze Allen. Krista's new play is an excellent piece that uncovers the secrecy and struggle of a family tackling the issue of eating disorders. It's funny, touching, and thoughtful.

I hope you are all well during this struggle with COVID-19. Remember, we will get through this, and come out stronger on the other side.

Love and Peace,

Ray

About Krista Kamman Lowe

A sample of Krista's art: https://bit.ly/KristaKLowe

The idea for writing Infatuation was born in the year 2000 after performing a personal piece in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival production of the play Hanging on Your Every Word, by Suze Allen. The desire to tell a fuller story about eating disorders stuck with me but it was not until I was a mother of a child with the same body and eating issues that I grew up with that I was able to finish the play.

Growing up with family members who struggled with eating disorders and my own battles with a poor self-image, I hated what our society told girls/women about our bodies. The images of super models and celebrities were the ideal. But if we failed and didn’t achieve this look, something was wrong with us. The transition of going from girl to woman has too much pressure. It doesn’t need to be this way!

We are more than a number on a scale or the size of our waist. Writing Infatuation became a deeply personal healing and an artistic way for me to express my frustration and anger about the repetitive internal voices that fill our heads with damaging thoughts. These distorted views that haunt young women leave deep scars, tear families apart, and ultimately can be deadly.

What a few crazy weeks the entire planet has been experiencing due to this scourge we call COVID-19. I often feel like I'm a character in a science fiction film with multiple endings, none of which the author has decided upon yet. Everyone keep safe, and I know we will get through this together.

But as they say, "The Show Must Go On".

---My tribute to John Prine.

---So, today I present Stuart Brown of the 24/7 Internet radio station Sounds of Broadway.

---You can learn all about Stuart's wonderful station at soundsofbroadway.com.

About Stuart and Sounds of Broadway:

The Sounds of Broadway offers the most wide-ranging listing of music from the Off-Broadway, Broadway, and London stages. Thousands of songs from hundreds of cast recordings stream online, 24/7. In addition to their programming schedules, listeners can make requests from our extensive song catalog.

The Sounds of Broadway was founded by Stuart Brown in March 2019. Brown has had a long association with terrestrial radio, beginning at WRSU-FM at Rutgers College in New Jersey in the late 1970’s. For the past 25 years, he had a weekly radio program, “On Broadway,” on WRTC-FM, Trinity College, in Hartford, CT.

The Connecticut resident is also a theater critic, reviewing shows in New York City and Connecticut. He is the current President of the Connecticut Critics Circle, and a member of the Outer Critics Circle, and the American Theater Critics Association.

His reviews on Connecticut and New York theater are published on his blog, stuonbroadway.blogspot.com.

Also, I pay a tribute to the American treasure, John Prine, who has fallen victim to the COVID-19 virus and is currently hospitalized and on a ventilator. We all hope and pray he heals and come home soon.

Today we discuss Ray's addiction to chocolate-covered berries, our current pandemic, and most importantly, we have a special interview with the UK based musician, Michael Grant.

Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker

Directed by Misty Megia

Livermore Arts

Tickets: https://lvpac.org/

Synopsis:

When four lost New Englanders enroll in Marty’s six-week-long community center drama class and begin to experiment with harmless games, hearts are quietly torn apart and tiny wars of epic proportions are waged and won. Circle Mirror Transformation is a charming and beautifully-crafted diorama, a petri dish in which we see, with hilarious detail and clarity, the antic sadness of a motley quintet.

Taught by Marty, their free-spirited and supportive leader, the group — Schultz, a recently divorced, emotionally vulnerable carpenter, Teresa, an earnest and vibrant former actress, James, Marty’s quiet and genial husband, and Lauren, a reserved and self-conscious high schooler — move through a series of acting exercises, ranging from the heartbreaking to the ridiculous. Over the course of the seemingly trivial games, their emotional wounds are revealed, nursed, and healing slowly begins. Winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play, Annie Baker’s quiet masterpiece explores the human condition and the subtle yet powerfully transforming effect we have on others through our words and indirect actions.

Directed by Misty Megia, Circle Mirror Transformation will run for eight performances at the Bothwell Arts Center from November 15-24, 2019. The East End of the Bothwell Arts Center provides the perfect setting for the play which is set in a similar community center in Vermont. Megia directed last year’s acclaimed production of RED by John Logan at the Bankhead Theater, the first play self-produced by Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center. Read an interview with Misty Megia here.

“Annie Baker’s play is an absolute feast… the kind of unheralded gem that sends people into the streets babbling and bright-eyed with the desire to spread the word…”—New York Times

Recently I spoke with Ellen Callas and Daniel Savio of the Tony Award winning SAN FRANCISCO MIME TROUPE.

The company opened a new musical today entitled "Treasure Island".

"Treasure Island" - is it the mythical isle where untold wealth awaits marauding pirates, or the freezing cold, artificial island in the middle of San Francisco Bay awaiting cut-throat developers? Or is it both? That's the question for Jill Hawkins when an old sea-dog of a developer drops anchor in her office at City Hall, and drops a mystery in her lap. "Developers...they scour the map looking for cities with fat purses, ready to be plundered, damn the regulations!" But if Treasure Island is such a wonderful opportunity why has no one developed it yet...? What about the people who live there now? And who is the one-legged developer Hawkins was warned about?

About the Mime Troupe

The San Francisco Mime Troupe creates and produces socially relevant theater of the highest professional quality and performs it before the broadest possible audience.

They do plays that make sense out of the headlines by identifying the forces that shape our lives and dramatizing the operation of these giant forces in small, close-up stories that make our audiences feel the impact of political events on personal life.

To make this work accessible the Mime Troupe performs its shows in local parks at a price everyone can afford: FREE.

The San Francisco Mime Troupe does not do silent pantomime. We mean 'mime' in the ancient sense: to mimic. We talk, we sing, we make a lot of noise. We are satirists, seeking to make you laugh at the absurdities of contemporary life and at the same time, see their causes. We've done shows about most of the burning issues of our time, generally shows that debunked the official story. We perform everywhere from public parks to palaces of culture, aiming to reach the broadest possible audience.

Bruce Vilanch Comedy writer

One of the most sought-after jokesmiths in the entertainment industry, Bruce Vilanch has become a recognizable face in his own right, thanks to the feature-length documentary "Get Bruce!" (1999) and his stint as a regular on "Hollywood Squares" (1998- ), for which he also serves as head writer. Known for his eclectic eyewear and collection of unique T-shirts, he began as a child model for Lane Bryant, but when his initial efforts as an actor came to naught, he became an entertainment writer for the Chicago Tribune instead. Impressed by his review of her cabaret performance in 1970, Bette Midler hired him to punch up her act, and he later moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for variety shows like the original "Donny and Marie" and "The Brady Bunch Hour" (both ABC) and provided material for Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers. He has maintained his connection with Midler through the years, working on such projects as the feature "Divine Madness" (1980) and the TV special "Bette Midler--Diva Las Vegas" (HBO, 1997), as well as writing for her sitcom "Bette!" (CBS, 2000- ).

Vilanch began contributing to Academy Awards telecasts in 1989, collaborating with the likes of Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and David Letterman, and graduated to head writer in 2000. The Whoopi connection led to his providing the notorious material Ted Danson performed in blackface at a certain 1993 Friars Club roast of his then-girlfriend Goldberg, but his resume also includes "You Made Me Watch You", the touching Emmy-winning valedictory Midler crooned as a send-off to Johnny Carson. He made his feature debut as a dress manufacturer in "Mahogany' (1975), starring Diana Ross (to whose act he also contributed), and put his Muppet-like persona to excellent use as Santa's number one helper in the syndicated TV-movie "It Nearly Wasn't Christmas" (1989). On the heels of "Get Bruce!", Vilanch performed his comedy stylings Off-Broadway in "Bruce Vilanch: Almost Famous" (2000).

Today's episode features Jennifer Marshall who plays the character Susan Hargrove (Max's Mom) in the huge Netflix TV show, "Stranger Things". We talk about all kinds of interesting topics within the world of acting and television. This was a lot of fun. Enjoy!

Mini Bio for IMDB:

Born in Denver, Colorado, Jennifer Marshall is the eldest of three children. She grew up in Arvada, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, and attended Pomona High School before a death in the family prompted the family to move to Carbondale, Colorado. This small ski town nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley between Aspen and Glenwood Springs was her home for the next three years and living there solidified her decision to join the military after high school.

In high school, she played basketball for the Roaring Fork Lady Rams, was a Varsity cheerleader, a member of the Speech and Drama team for a short time (before her coach would not allow her to participate and play basketball during the same season), editor of the high school newspaper, part of the yearbook staff, state Vice President of HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America), sang in show choir and honor choir, and was a frequent face in the annual school musical.

One month after graduating high school, Jennifer joined the United States Navy and was shipped off to boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois. She spent nearly five years in the Navy and was stationed on San Nicolas Island, the most remote of the California Channel Islands, and later, on the USS Roosevelt, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier home ported in Norfolk, Virginia. She was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Petty Officer Second Class. While in the military, she worked as an aircraft handler, in aviation supply, and was a member of the Ships Security Defense Force Team as well as the Repair Locker Fire Team. She earned a Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, among other awards. She has spoken positively about her life in the military and has mentioned returning to military reserve service in the future.

Jennifer graduated Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Wesleyan College with a double major in International Politics and Spanish and a minor in History. As of 2013, Jennifer is seeking her graduate degree through American Military University.

As of 2013, Jennifer lives and works as an actress in sunny and beautiful Los Angeles, California.

Born on the 22nd of January 1991 Mugzy had to fight through his adolescent years. Struggling with deep internal stress, he found inspiration in Eminem after his first encounter with Hip-Hop when he heard the song 'The Way I Am'. Mugzy felt that he could strongly relate to the lyrics in Eminem's songs & began to change his image to be a true representative of the Hip-Hop culture. As he developed his style and studied Hip-Hop, he found further inspiration from the legends: 2 Pac, Biggie, 50 Cent, DMX, & searched further into the roots of Hip-Hop to re-discover artists like Public Enemy, NWA & Nas. Drawing inspiration from the masters of Hip-Hop & armed with the knowledge earned through years of hardship, Mugzy's rap speaks of truth. A raw truth. A truth that will resound with teenagers that have had to endure self doubt & lack of confidence. Mugzy emerged from the shadow through Hip-Hop & found a way to express himself through his music by embracing the culture. Mugzy's style is a blend of grit, raw lyrics, aggression and abrasiveness. Mugzy will tell it how it is. Based north of Sydney, Mugzy will not shy away from any challenge to perform on any stage. There are a lot of performers in the scene that prefer to stay in closed groups, but Mugzy is open to collaboration with all artists that are fighting for their dream & are willing to have a go in a spirit of mutual respect. You can expect Mugzy to continue representing the Hip-Hop Culture, never backing away from any challenge well into the future.

Inspired by the writings of radical feminist philosopher and theologian Mary Daly, #GetGandhi - A Seriously Radical Feminist Comedy Is a world premiere, multi-character play written by award-winning playwright and actor Anne Galjour focusing on Mahatma Gandhi's infamous experiments in brahmacharya, or celibacy. Gandhi would have a young woman disrobe and sleep with him completely naked as a test to prove his seminal continence and his purity of spirit. Gandhi never saw anything wrong with this practice, but a small coven of old school bra-burning San Francisco feminists do. They plot to avenge these sex crimes. They set out for the Gandhi memorial statue, located on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, to rip it from its base, and drag it up Market Street in the middle of the night.

The play focuses on the women, their families, the backlash from their Generation X children as well as the conflict that is fueled from opposing responses to the revered hero's celibacy experiments. To Bob, the male character who is a longtime practitioner of Gandhi's principles of nonviolence, his hero is flawed. To his female counterparts, this flawed prince of peace is an imposter and sexual abuser. #GetGandhi explores the themes of sexual assault and the removal of statues of historical figures once deemed heroic.

GetGandhi is extremely timely as it extends critical conversation on these issues. It is meant to be a forum that opens up dialogue in the Bay Area and beyond. As each character in the play views Gandhi's actions through a different lens it is hoped that diverse audiences will engage in the debate.

GetGandhi bring together some of the finest Bay Area theatrical writing and acting talent on one stage. SF favorite monologist and playwright & professor Anne Galjour (Alligator Tales, Hurricane) returns with this timely World Premiere, joined with gifted actors: Jeri Lynn Cohen (Word for Word, Magic), Patricia Silver (Word for Word, Z Collective), and Howard Swain (Aurora, ACT), Miranda Swain (ACT) and Lyndsy Kail* (Center Rep). (Miranda Swain is the daughter of Howard Swain and Nancy Carlin.) To top it off #GetGandhi is directed by renown director, actor and teacher Nancy Carlin (Shotgun, Marin Theatre Co.) We are all in for a treat with this playwright, director and stellar cast.

Today I spoke with John Fisher, the Executive Director of Theatre Rhinoceros, the longest running queer theatre in the world. John directed the award-winning musical - Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

After last year’s (2017) sold-out run, and the most successful show in the 40-year history of Theatre Rhinoceros is thrilled to be presenting - BY POPULAR DEMAND - an encore production for 2017/2018 Season of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - The Musical. Priscilla has a book by Australian film director/writer Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, using well-known pop songs as its score. Adapted from Elliott's 1994 Oscar-winning film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the musical is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of.

With a dazzling array of over-the-top costumes, extraordinary headdresses, A FULL SIZE BUS - ON STAGE, and a hit parade of dance floor favorites, this wildly fresh and funny musical is a journey to the heart of FABULOUS. SYNOPSIS: The Musical follows two drag queens and a transsexual (Tick, Adam, and Bernadette), who buy a run-down old bus (they call Priscilla) and set out on a road trip across the Australian Outback when one of them, Tick, is invited by his ex-wife to perform his drag show at her faraway resort. However, Tick is hesitant to tell his friends, Bernadette (a former performing icon whose best days are behind her) and Adam (a rambunctious young troublemaker), his own personal reasons for taking the trip. During their journey, the trio encounters an array of Australian citizens, some of who aren’t receptive to their lifestyle, including incidents of homo and transphobia, while widening comfort zones, finding new horizons, and strengthening their own friendship.

Performances: Extended run to July 7, 2018

Location: Gateway Theatre - 215 Jackson St., (at Battery St.) SF, CA 94111

Tickets: Available online from Brown Paper Tickets (http://bit.ly/priscilla_tix)or call the box office at 1-800-838-3006.

2) HEISENBERG

At A.C.T.

by Simon Stephens

Directed by Hal Brooks

March 14 – April 8, 2018 (closed)

A.C.T.’s Geary Theater

415 Geary Street

Running time: 1 hour 25 minutes, with no intermission

In a bustling London train station, free-spirited American Georgie unexpectedly kisses mid-70s British butcher Alex, and sets his world reeling. When she turns up in his shop a few days later, he is suspicious. Is she really attracted to him, or is there a longer con on the cards? As Alex is drawn into Georgie’s anarchic world, his conventional life becomes chaotic, uncertain, and undeniably richer.

In this “vibrant and emotionally charged” (The New York Times) new play, Tony Award–winning playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) crafts a comedy that rethinks the polar magnetism of opposites attracting, as well as the conventions of modern-day playwriting. With its perfect collision of strangers and strangeness, Heisenberg was an electric hit on Broadway from one of theater’s most original voices.

3) YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE

You Are My Sunshine is a fact-inspired, multi-decade character study of a man of mythic American proportions whose passions and demons lead to tragedy, narrated in Woody Guthrie-style folk songs, accompanied by Bay Area music favorites Chris Haugen (guitar) and Trevor Marcom (vocals/guitar). This ensemble drama was spurned from a long-worn, much-hushed rumor in Kelli Kerslake Colaco's family that her great grandfather, Ernest Fletcher Hodge (a semi-pro baseball player with the Detroit Tigers), lost his mind one hot summer night in Blytheville, Arkansas and killed his wife, his mother-in-law and then himself. Part John Steinbeck, part Coen Brothers, this intriguing play focuses on the search for truth behind a dark family legend vis-à-vis an ancestor and the women and children in his life. See You Are My Sunshine at San Francisco's Phoenix Theatre.

This week I saw two shows I loved!

  • The GREAT "Bonnie Raitt" at the San Jose Civic
  • "Hamlet" with National Theatre London

BONNIE RAITT

In March of 2000, Bonnie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this was followed by her welcome into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, along with her father, in June 2001.

After the Fundamental tour, she went back into the studio with her veteran road band to record 'Silver Lining', released in 2002. Featuring Bonnie's stunning interpretation of the David Gray-penned title track, the Grammy-nominated "Gnawin' On It," and the hit single "I Can't Help You Now," 'Silver Lining' was considered by many critics to be one of the best albums of her career. She promoted the album with a lengthy world tour that included her Green Highway Festival and an eco-partnership promoting BioDiesel fuel, the environment, and alternative energy solutions at shows and benefits along the way. In 2003, she released the retrospective 'The Best of Bonnie Raitt' on Capitol.

Raitt stayed busy with more guest appearances, including the stunning duet "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" on Ray Charles' final release 'Genius Loves Company', which won the Grammy award for Album of the Year, and a duet on the Grammy-winning album 'True Love' by Toots & The Maytals. Her 1989 breakthrough album 'Nick of Time', was remixed for surround sound, and released by Capitol Records in 2004 as a DVD-Audio, garnering a Grammy nomination in the newly created category, Best Surround Sound Album.

In 2003, she also participated in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed PBS series, 'The Blue's, performing two songs in Wim Wenders' film, 'The Soul of a Man', and joining the all-star cast of 'Lightning in a Bottle', the live feature concert film on the Blues directed by Antoine Fuqua. She also contributed songs for two Disney movies, 'The Country Bears' and 'Home on the Range'. She played guitar on a track on Stevie Wonder's album 'A Time To Love', and appeared in the TV/DVD tribute 'Music l0l: Al Green'.

'Souls Alike', her first album ever to bear the credit "Produced by Bonnie Raitt," debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200 in September 2005, eliciting widespread critical acclaim and propelling Raitt back onto the road. She was also selected as the inaugural artist for the VH1 'Classic Decades Rock Live!' CD/DVD series. 'Bonnie Raitt and Friends' featuring Norah Jones, Ben Harper, Alison Krauss and Keb' Mo' was released in August of 2006.

In the years in and around the release of 'Souls Alike', she co-headlined with Jackson Browne and Keb Mo' part of the historic "Vote For Change" tour leading up to the 2004 Presidential election, and then again for the 2008 election, staged a series of benefit concerts and fundraising receptions to help get out the vote and encourage voting in key Democratic Senate races. In 2007, Bonnie joined her MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) friends Jackson Browne and Graham Nash to launch a campaign to prevent the legislative bailout of the nuclear industry and developed www.nukefree.org, a website that serves as an information and networking hub for safe energy activists. In August 2011, MUSE mounted a very successful benefit concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre to raise funds for Japan disaster relief (following the devastating earthquake, tsunami and meltdown of the Daichi-Fukushima nuclear reactors earlier in the year), as well as non-nuclear organizations worldwide.

HAMLET

by William Shakespeare

Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy.

Now seen by over 750,000 people worldwide, the original 2015 NT Live broadcast returns to cinemas.

As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions.

One of the most visually and atmospherically stunning productions I’ve ever seen, of anything, ever. - Time Out

SYNOPSIS of "The Birthday Lottery"

On December 1, 1969, five fraternity brothers gather together to listen to the U.S. Army's draft lottery, which uses birth dates to determine the order in which they will be called to serve in Vietnam. Broadcast on national television and radio, the brothers anxiously listen as dates are drawn, one-by-one, over an excruciating 90-minute period. When the last date is drawn, the brothers react to the realization that their lives have been changed forever. They also begin to turn on each other.

Richard Fouts' THE BIRTHDAY LOTTERY Opens At Z Space, 3/29 Today's teenage boys worry about a lot of things, but being drafted to serve in a foreign war isn't one of them. At least, not yet. The Birthday Lottery, Richard Fouts' new play about the Vietnam draft, opens on March 29, 2018, directed by Suze Allen. It runs for four performances only, March 29-April 1 at Z Space, 450 Florida Street in San Francisco.

"This play highlights, in real time, what young men felt as they listened for their birth date to be announced over radio and television on the night of December lst, 1969" said playwright Fouts in a recent interview. "The order your

birthday was drawn became your draft number. A young Roger Mudd was the only broadcast journalist who covered the event, who calmly told America's young men that if they had been born on September 14th, they'd be the first to go."

Actor Nick Coleus, who plays David, commented in the play's background video, "You can feel the tension of what it must have been like to live through that excruciating night. Though it occurred 50 years ago, it feels relevant for today's young men, especially since there appears to be no end in sight around Iraq and Afghanistan. And now North Korea is in the news every day."

Playwright Richard Fouts recalls the moment when he decided to write the play. "With the 50th anniversary of the draft approaching, I've been listening to Vietnam vets tell their stories of how their lives were abruptly interrupted with the Army's sudden draft. Many of them were just 19 years old at the time. Hearing their vivid memories of that night convinced me that their stories belonged on the stage, in an intimate setting that only live theater can deliver."

Place: Z Space Main Stage, 450 Florida Street, San Francisco 94110

Opens: Thursday, March 29, 8:00 pm.

Runs: March 29, 30, 31, at 8:00 pm, Sunday, April 1 at 2:00 pm.

Suze Allen is a resident playwright at Three Girls Theatre and a co-founder of the company. 3Girls Theatre Company is proud to be one of the very few theater companies in the nation that produce only plays by women playwrights. 3GT seeks more than “gender parity” in the theater: the company has a vision of a world where stories told by women are heard onstage just as often as stories told by men.  In other words – 3GT wants to help change our cultural mindset!

Suze is a published author, teacher, dramaturg and director with credits on both coasts. She was the creator of Fresh New Works San Francisco, The Maine Playwrights’ Lab and Short Works Festival, Artistic Director for the SF Writers and Actors Lab, Director for Fertile Ground Writing Studio and the resident Dramaturge and playwriting instructor at The Playwrights’ Center of San Francisco. -It looks like Kevin Spacey's career might be over. Apparently, he has used his status to harass numerous people over the years. It's rumored that he might be investigated by British police for other acts of sexual harassment. This is such a sad ending to a great career. Of course, I feel for the victims, and I also feel for Spacey. Everyone has been destroyed by his behavior including himself.

This week I take a peak, so to speak, at Kevin Spacey and his recent debacle. Since I recorded this episode yesterday, many people are now saying that Spacey regularly abused his power on the set of House of Cards and created a “toxic” work environment on the set through a pattern of sexual harassment and assault. I don't want to believe this. Kevin has been a great representative for all actors for many years. To think that he may have behaved in ways that hurt numerous people is difficult for me to accept.

On a lighter note, this episode also talks about the return of Curb Your Enthusiasm to HBO! After a six-year absence, the half hour program has been resurrected by Larry David and the executives at Home Box Office. I also take a look at the iconic sit-com, Seinfeld and analyze the similarities and differences with Curb. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David have created multi-million dollar enterprises with the two comedies. So, you better listen, or NO SOUP for YOU!

Please leave a review on Itunes: Here are the instructions. The Prince of Egypt, is now the highest-selling musical in the 48-year-old theatre company's history. With 15 remaining performances, this new work from Grammy-and-Oscar-winning composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) and book writer Philip LaZebnik (Pocahontas, Mulan), is a soaring celebration of the human spirit recounting one of the greatest stories ever told: the saga of Moses, his Pharaoh brother Ramses, and the indomitable people who changed both their destinies.

Directed by Broadway's Scott Schwartz, The Prince of Egypt has to date grossed more than $650,000 in ticket sales, surpassing the previous record-holder, Jane Austen's EMMA, another TheatreWorks world-premiere musical, which garnered more than $540,000 in ticket sales. Inspired by the DreamWorks animated film of the same name, The Prince of Egypt is presented by TheatreWorks now through November 5, 2017 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St., Mountain View. For tickets ($40-$100) and more information, the public may visit TheatreWorks.org or call (650) 463-1960.

The Prince of Egypt, co-produced by Fredericia Teater, will next be re-mounted in Denmark for its international and co-world premiere in April 2018. This week we take a look at the 2013 film, Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix, and written and directed by Spike Jonze, the man with the coolest name in show business! Her marks Jonze's solo screenwriting debut.

The film follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice.

Jonze conceived the idea in the early 2000s after reading an article about a website that allowed for instant messaging with an artificial intelligence program. He wrote the first draft of the script in five months. Principal photography took place in Los Angeles and Shanghai in mid-2012.

Her premiered at the 2013 New York Film Festival on October 12, 2013. Warner Bros. initially provided a limited release for Her at six theaters on December 18. It was later given a wide release at over 1,700 theaters in the United States and Canada on January 10, 2014. Her received widespread critical acclaim upon its release, and grossed over $48 million worldwide on a production budget of $23 million.

The film received numerous awards and nominations, primarily for Jonze's screenplay. At the 86th Academy Awards, Her received five nominations, including Best Picture, and won the award for Best Original Screenplay. Jonze also won awards for his screenplay at the 71st Golden Globe Awards, the 66th Writers Guild of America Awards, the 19th Critics' Choice Awards, and the 40th Saturn Awards. In a 2016 BBC poll of 177 critics around the world, Her was voted the 84th-greatest film since 2000.*

This week we delve into the world of old movie musicals brought to the stage. We take a look at the Broadway tour of An American in Paris. We also go in-depth with the classic Spanish drama, Yerma, staged by the Young Vic Theatre in London and shared with the world by National Theatre Live in London.

An American in Paris, tells the thrilling story of a young American soldier, a beautiful French girl, and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. Featuring a score including the songs “I Got Rhythm,” “‘S Wonderful,” “But Not for Me,” “Stairway to Paradise,” “They Can’t Take That Away” and orchestral music including “Concerto in F,” “2nd Prelude,” “2nd Rhapsody” and “An American in Paris.”

In Yerma, the incredible Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress award-winning role.

A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone’s radical production of Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics call it ‘an extraordinary theatrical triumph’ (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable’ (Mail on Sunday). Billie Piper’s lead performance is described as ‘spellbinding’ (The Evening Standard), ‘astonishing’ (iNews) and ‘devastatingly powerful’ (The Daily Telegraph).

Set in contemporary London, Piper’s portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax. _______

National Theatre Live launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre with Helen Mirren. They’ve since broadcast more than forty other productions live, from both the National Theatre and from other theatres in the UK.

Their broadcasts have now been experienced by over 5.5 million people in over 2,000 venues around the world, including over 650 venues in the UK alone. Past broadcasts from the National Theatre have included Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller; War Horse; Man and Superman with Ralph Fiennes; and Everyman with Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Broadcasts from other UK theatres include Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse; A View from the Bridge from the Young Vic; Macbeth from the Manchester International Festival; and Hangmen and The Audience from London’s West End. Our biggest single broadcast to date is Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch at the Barbican, which has been seen by over 550,000 people.

In 2014 the National Theatre recorded its first production on Broadway, Of Mice and Men with James Franco and Chris O’Dowd, captured at the Longacre Theatre.

Though each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience in the theatre, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to ensure that cinema audiences get the ‘best seat in the house’ view of each production. Where these cameras are placed is different for each broadcast, to make sure that cinema audiences enjoy the best possible experience every time.

Once she had decided to commission her personal architect Richard Mique to build her a real theatre, work was completed in spring 1780, and the official inauguration was on 1 June.

While masks have been used since the dawn of theatre in ancient Greece, using them for educational purposes is relatively new. In 1913 French theatre director Jacques Copeau introduced masks into theatre rehearsals as a way for actors to remove themselves. Some notable actors that attended the mask training classes at Julliard are Kevin Spacey, Robin Williams, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline, and Patti Lupone . They all count the masks as one of the most important classes of their education.
