What’s it like to be a BYU fan who literally wakes up to Cougar talk every morning? Brandon calls himself an “everydayer,” and today he and Nate welcome none other than Jake Hatch — the voice behind Locked On Cougars.
Jake shares stories from his seven years running the daily BYU podcast and what it’s like balancing sources, scoop, and the occasional “please-don’t-print-that” phone call. From growing up in the shadow of Lavell Edwards Stadium, to watching Utah hoops in the ’90s, to covering today’s NIL-fueled chaos, Jake dishes on the highs, lows, and sheer unpredictability of Cougar life.
Along the way we hit:
Whether you’re a diehard BYU fan or just here for the rivalry banter, this episode has plenty of inside stories, hot takes, and football season hype.

We have been advised not to name the individual that is suing, but you should be able to figure it out. Basically, this individual might lose his or her job based on things going on in Washington D.C. right now, so this is just an attempt to get money. The papers that were served to us today stated that we never paid this individual for all the top episodes that they participated in, and they claim they are top episodes because they are in them. But we have evidence from our fans that this individual is “annoying”.
They also claim there was a bet that was never settled based on different assumptions that were made.
Thanks for your support and understanding. We will hopefully be back soon. Bye now.

We’ve all been there. Whale fishing off of horseback on the Provo River with your cousin (who is harassing ducks) when you are suddenly hit with a snowball. You suspect it’s a spy your wife sent because she knows you love your cousin and counting down the years until you are 65 and can marry her. You finally see the unkept spy that looks like he uses gun powder to cure his headaches. He also looks like a guy you saw throw a rock at public transportation a few weeks ago. You decide to not pay attention to him and turn your attention back to your hot cousin you fantasize dancing in public with her when you witness your wife murder you. Your legacy will go on as an Utah Outlaw.

Did you know one of Jim Carey’s greatest films was filmed right here in Utah? That’s right, Mr. Lloyd Christmas himself has walked the streets of Salt Lake, Ogden, and Provo. But after his fame, he starred in a little known film where a key party is depicted at a holiday party. Yeah, have fun explaining that one to your kids.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas was mostly filmed at Universal Studios, Hollywood. I know because I’ve been there. But you know where else I’ve been? Solitude ski resort! Ok, I haven’t been to Solitude ski resort, but the Grinch has!

Nightmare on 13th is the oldest Utah haunted house that is currently open, but it is packed with new scares this year!
Tune in to hear Brandon and Nate recap their trip to Nightmare on 13th with their very best friend, Matt. Other friends joined as we braved through the house with some big scares, but also some empty spaces with no scares. Maybe that’s what we get for going as soon as it opens on a weeknight, but Matt had to get home to get to bed at a reasonable time for a responsible adult.
To wrap it up, we loved our experience, and would recommend it to anyone! But if this episode got you excited, wait until next year when we get fresh Taco Bell!!!! Oh yeah, and hit all 3 SLC haunts in a single night

The Old Mill is made famous by many movies, such as Halloween 6 and SLC Punk!, but Teen Alien is not one of those movies. Yes, it is filmed at the Old Mill, but it doesn’t meet the same standard as Michael Myers sacrificing his son as part of a cult ritual.
So join Brandon and Nate as they say how terrible the movie is, and then unconvincingly try to act like it was good so you’ll watch it. Also, if you know anyone who was part of this production, please reach out!!! Below is a link to the movie. It is free, but time is valuable, so use yours wisely.

This is one of the most anticipated episodes of the year: Frightmares 2: The Third Part of Primordial.
Nate, Brandon, and intern Matt recap their highly anticipated trip to Lagoon, filled with soggy tacos (tradition!), waiting in line for Primordial (tradition!!), and running out of time (tradition!!!).
In a little less than 6 hours, we managed to ride 2 rides and go through 3 haunted houses. Some houses were disappointing, some were a nice refresh, and some had an hour long line. But we ended the night by getting soaked on Rattle Snake Rapids, which was the highlight of the trip!

Join us today as we discuss Kay’s Cross in Kaysville, Utah. The origin of Kay’s Cross has never been settled on, but Ghost Adventures stuck with the story of a cult leader, Krishna Venta, who claimed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, had the cross built as a symbol of knowledge. Venta was eventually killed by two of his followers in 1958, and the cross was destroyed in 1992, but remnants are still there today.

Buckle up Potter fans because it’s another episode of Nate DESTROYING your predictable series that is clearly a ripoff of Star Wars. And yet, we still love Nate for just being himself.
Today, Brandon and Nate discuss Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Nate does admit that this is the first movie that semi-catches his attention, but he’s too cool to admit that he may have enjoyed it. They do a mini deep dive into Robert Pattinson’s acting career, and how Cedric Diggory didn’t really die, but was turned into a vampire 👀
So tell us what YOU really think. Are you team Brandon who enjoys good stories, or are you team Nate who showed up late to the party and complains about how boring the party is? Or, are you team Matt, who will likely be fired after writing this episode description while still mad at Nate for his inhumane reaction to Harry Potter? Let us know!

Join us today as we continue our Primordial series with our second episode out of a 27 episode series.
We spoil Primordial by learning there are 8 different endings! And possibly 2 tracks!?!? We also get roasted by Queen Azdra, the magical lynx that greets you to tell you your mission in a very soft voice. This is just one of our favorite parts of a fan favorite ride at lagoon.
Our question for you is, how long you would wait to ride Primordial? And would you wait that long to ride it a second time? Let us know!

Over a year ago, Wingers followed us on social media. We made a blood pact that we would go eat there and do an episode. Fortunately for us, Intern Matt didn’t forget this pact, so we finally paid Wingers a visit on a TRIPLE date!
Wingers is well known in Utah and started in 1993 in Bountiful. Wingers currently has 13 locations in Utah, as well as locations in Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, and Oklahoma, bringing the total to 22 locations. They are famous for their sticky sauce which Matt had no idea about but immediately commented on how good and sticky the sauce was.
So if you haven’t been to Wingers, give it a try! And be sure to tell them we sent you!

Today, we are thrilled to be joined by movie director Rob York to discuss his upcoming film, Curse of Crom: Crom’s Fury. We were fortunate to interview Rob when Curse of Crom came out 2 years ago, and are very excited to talk to him about Part 2 which is coming out in 2025. Rob teases a bit of the story and filming locations, which include American Fork, Utah, as well as Ireland!
Halfway through the interview, we were joined by one of the lead actors, Colin Cunningham. Colin shares his love and excited for this original script. It was a treat talking with Colin.
You can support the production of Curse of Crom: Crom’s Fury by visiting https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/arrowstorm/curse-of-crom-2-feature-film?ref=6ga6t8

Today, we had a great conversation with Vaughn Cook. Vaughn Cook (United Utah Party) is running for election to the U.S. House to represent Utah's 4th Congressional District. He is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024. He explains the benefits of being a party-neutral candidate and how it could work in the U.S. House. And why politics can be fun and more civilized than the media would lead you believe.

Join Brandon and Nate in the third installment of the “Nate watches Harry Potter and is told he’ll definitely like the next movie” series. Nate does admit that this movie is the best so far and is starting to pick up on pop culture reference to the series (Prison Mike). But the thing to look forward to most is to see if Nate can watch the next 4 movies before the end of August so he can experience the final installment of the series at a movie theater when they replay the entire series.

We’ve all been there. It’s late at night and you just need something greasy to hit the spot. Thankfully here in Utah, there is no shortage of this type of place to get your fix. On this special Cinco de Mayo-themed episode we talk about Betos, Ranchertios, and all the other copycats.

Frightmares at Lagoon has been a great way to get in the Halloween spirit since 1995. What is your favorite thing about Frightmares?
Yes, this is our second episode this year about "Haunted Woods" but lucky for you this is one that you can still visit!
On October 25, 26, and 27 you can venture to Murray park where you can find a fun and spooky Halloween event. For $5 you get an entrance, hot chocolate and a donut plus the warm feeling that you are doing something that goes towards a good cause. So bundle up and take the whole family!
Halloween Kills is in theaters this week but that doesn't mean we can overlook the classics that proceeded it. Halloween 4 was filmed in many locations throughout Utah and we thought it was worth it to watch the movie and discuss our thoughts on it.

Concerts are back! Nate, Brandon, and Matt decided to take a trip up to Ogden for the Twilight Concert Series. They took a train, saw a fire, jammed to the music, and then almost got stranded. Listen in to this latest episode to hear all about it!
Fall is here (okay, not "officially") and so is football! This week, two of the top football programs in Utah will be facing each other, and apparently, it's a big deal.
We were joined by Jarom Jordan of BYU Sports Nation, the Deep Blue podcast, the Utah Warriors Rugby, and just about any other sports-related project he can get his hands on.

I came up with the pun after the episode was recorded so I had to find a way to throw it.
We've been a little busy so we thought we'd take a break from visiting places for this one and just do some old-fashioned Wikipedia research. Enjoy the invention of the TV!
On this day 22 years ago, a tornado ripped through downtown Salt Lake. All these years later and we're still talking about the "storm of the century." Where were you when the tornado touched down?
It's the best worst movie and was conveniently filmed right here in our backyard. Luckily we got to speak with George Hardy who played a big part in making this movie what it is today.
While we would have loved to hit every worthwhile ice cream joint in our state, our stomachs and wallets wouldn't allow it. We figured the next best thing to do was to talk with someone dedicating a whole Instagram page to just that!
We had the pleasure of speaking with Shay of icecream.foodie. She shared with us thoughts on some of the places we covered and gave us a rundown of the top 5 places we missed out on. Make sure you follow her and check out her extensive list as well.
Did you discover any hidden gems this month? Did you reinforce your love for somewhere as well? Let us know what you found out this National Ice Cream Month!
Happy (belated) 4th of July! Just because the holiday is over, doesn't mean you can't still have a taste of freedom by stopping by Brookers Founding Flavors. There you will find colonial-themed attire, ice cream flavors, and even music. Also, try the Liberty Bell Challenge if you dare.
Of course, lots of cities throughout the state have their own festival but we think this one is truly something special.
Stay tuned at the end of the episode for a special encore performance from Nate of Diamonds in the Rough!
Got a bit of an unconventional episode for ya today!
Why? First, we've been both sad and busy. Two, we don't show enough love to Utah county. Enjoy our rundown of the top 40 famous people that have resided in Utah county.
Who did we leave out?
Feel like you’ve been unable to truly navigate Salt Lake since the year 2000? You’re not alone! The Murray Smoke Stacks stood as emblems of The Valley for many years until they were taken down. Their legacy is still sprinkled throughout Murray in a couple of ways (structures by the trax station, mural by Costco and dedicated by the hospital).
While we’re always sad to see things torn down, it at least gives Wendi Pettet of @demolished more things to talk about for her podcast! We were lucky to have her join us for this episode to lend her insight and expertise.
We finish out our 3 part Ogden series with a visit for lunch at the Prairie Schooner Steak House. Enjoy a quiet meal under the stars huddled up in a covered wagon.
White Roller Coaster? Lagoon Dipper? Mr. Rickety? Whatever you call it, you can't dispute the importance of this now 100 years old treasure.
We're keeping it in Ogden for the second week in a row as we discuss Ogden High School with Jon Smith of Cool Stuff Utah and Arrow 103.5.
Up in Ogden you will find a park dedicated to all things dinosaurs! There’s fossils, gems, animatronics and more! Is it ideal for a couple of grown men? You’ll have to listen in to find out!
"Who do you think you are? I am!" said the Dude as we visit Allstar Lanes for this week's episode.
¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! We thought it would be fitting to stop by one of our favorite Mexican restaurants, Salsaleedos. We talked with the GM, Jake Bright, about this community-centric establishment's history, food, and artwork.
This episode has Wilford Brimley, at length discussion of a niche Star Wars trilogy (hopefully), and some window-smashing podcast fans. What more could you ask for?
We say hello and goodbye to a long-standing Salt Lake restaurant. Farewell Coachman's, we always wanted to be pleasantly surprised but never took the chance and we regret it.
Well, kind of. We talk about the history of Lester Wire and the original electric traffic light
Also, would emojis help encourage you to slow down? Frowning faces sure seem to help us!
Thanks to the Salt Lake City History Minute for the audio clip.
We can't stop talking about the film industry in Utah and we couldn't miss out on the opportunity to do an episode about The Sandlot on its 28th anniversary. No better way to do it than with one of the main characters from the movie in Marty York!
We got to speak with Marty about his time filming The Sandlot, other things he's worked on, the explosion of the movie's fame, and what he's up to now. We recommend you go and watch the movie and then let Disney know it's time for a Sandlot series.
We had a great time chatting with Britani Underwood who is an actor, singer, model, writer... you name it! We know her most from her starring role in The RM and Mobster's & Mormons but there is so much more beyond that.
While you get a great interview in this episode, you will also find out the middle names of both Brandon and Nate (something that everyone has been asking for). So, join us on this break from the "place" format episode!
We officially made it to a whole year! Thanks for joining us on this and the other 52 episodes we've had so far. For this week's episode, we revisit how we got the podcast idea, we talk about trampolines, and also the new butterscotch milkshake.
At this year mark, we ask for your suggestions! What can we do better? What could we do worse? What episodes would you like to hear? What episodes should we absolutely avoid? Leave us your ideas in the comments, DMs or send us an email at thisisaplacepodcast@gmail.com. Thanks again for your continued support.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Nothing can exemplify this Americanized holiday more than visiting a pub that is themed after leprechauns. If you're going to go anywhere to celebrate (besides McDonald's for a shamrock shake) then you have to check this place out.
Sorry, we just had to do it.
Listen to our take on the wildly popular Netflix documentary about Mark Hoffman who was an expert forger turned murderer.
....on Road Redwood. Who could forget the catchy jingles, quirky commercials, and the gigantic store? The Riddle family definitely had something special in Furniture Warehouse.
Today we discuss Utah's premier light rail system courtesy of the Utah Transit Authority. You can use TRAX to get to a Jazz game, a high school football state final and you might even find your abandoned vehicle at a local station. Listen in to hear all about it!
Maybe you look at Hires and think that's a great place to get a burger and some fries but it's so much more than that. A big thanks to Mark Hale for giving us a deep dive into the life of his father Don Hale and what really makes this place so special. If it's been a minute, stop by Hires and get yourself a good old-fashioned meal complete with a malt (trust us on the malt).
Happy Valentine's week from This is a Place Podcast!
Can you call yourself a Utahn if you haven't stayed at least one night in the Anniversary Inn? Of course, you can but you would be missing out on the best-themed hotel that our state has to offer. Take a stay with us as we explore many of the great rooms throughout their four locations. You might be too late to book a stay there for this weekend but it doesn't mean you can't offer the gift of a future visit as a gift.
Yes, we know we already did a Raging Waters episode but it was super popular so we're trying to replicate our success, okay?
In all reality, there have been some developments with plans for the site. We have to do our part to disseminate this information. Listen as we break down the 5 scenarios, give our ideas and get off track talking about Groundhog Day.
Who goes to an arcade at 2:00 on a Tuesday afternoon? The boys from This is a Place do! In this week's episode, we talk about Nickel Mania which is one of Utah's premier nickel arcades. We talk Wizard of Oz, Nickelback, and poorly researched arcade game history.
Do you think you enjoy our podcast? Wait till you hear our sister podcast! Utah Famous has been dropping Utah knowledge since October of 2019. They were gracious enough to do an episode with us on the legendary Allen Park (which many who were teens in Utah know as Hobbitville). Join us as we talk our knowledge of this newer Salt Lake City purchase and maybe you'll hear some classic LOTR jokes along the way.
We Utahn's love Disneyland... and Disneyland loves us? For this episode, we are joined by Chris and Amanda Provost as we talk about the adventures they have as well as specific things that tie our happy state to the happiest place on earth.
Did we do an obligatory end of the year episode? You betcha! Listen in as we recap Christmas, Utah news of 2020, favorite podcast moments, and what is to come in 2021!
We talk about midnight mass at the Cathedral, eggnog shakes and maybe even meet Santa... all this and more on our final Christmas themed episode of 2020!
... at the Cottonwood High School Auditorium of course (because the rule of the podcast is it has to be a place).
Is it truly a Utah Christmas if you aren't belting out "Let Him in" all December long? This year is no exception. Sure you can't go to C-Wood and experience the magic in person but you could still check it out in theaters and now buy or stream it. Michael McLean's masterpiece can still be enjoyed in 2020 and we would recommend that you do just that.
For many years, this street located in Taylorsville has been a Christmas tradition. The residents here all participate in a joint effort of telling "The Night Before Christmas." Take your family and some hot cocoa while taking a drive (or stroll) through this neighborhood. Big thanks to all the residents of Christmas Street and specifically to Tawnie South who was nice enough to tell us all about it.
Don't let COVID ruin your Christmas! There is plenty to still do to enjoy the holiday. Our first stop for this year was visiting the Tree of Life (or the "Tree of Light" as some call it). It's a fun tradition for those in Draper and surrounding cities that began as early as 2012 when Brite Nites took over. But is the one in Draper the only Tree of Life? Listen in to find out!
We heard they have some killer Black Friday deals going on this weekend at the Cottonwood Mall. We're definitely going to head to Tease 'N Keys first, wrap-around to the Game Peddler, then JMR, a bite to eat at Wayne's Mongolian BBQ, and then a stop at Tilt arcade on the way out.
Sadly not this year or any other year can you now visit the Cottonwood Mall but it doesn't mean we can't all reminisce about it, right? Big thanks to the crew from Messin' with Mormons (CD, Chez, and Wade) for hosting us so we could all talk about the good old days of hanging out at the mall.
It's that time of year folks and we need this more than ever...carbo-load! There is no better place to get your fill than at SpudToddos which is a fast-casual restaurant in West Jordan. While many people view the potato as a side dish, the owner Todd puts it at the center of every plate. You can get it baked, mashed, fried, sweet, or salad(ed?) However you take your potato, they have you covered. What is the craziest thing you've ever put on top of a potato?
It doesn't seem holy and it's definitely not a retreat...but this location a couple of miles up Logan canyon is sure full of stories! It has taken on many roles over the years but most notably would be that of a nunnery. Scary stories surround this place but none is more horrifying than the real-life nightmare that our guest Tito Thanadabouth had to endure. While his story doesn't necessarily involve ghosts, hell hounds, or a dark presence, it does convince us to heed the "NO TRESPASSING" warning.
In this episode, we talk about a disc golf course in Taylorsville and the invention of the frisbee by a Utah native. We also talk about tetanus shots, MTC rules created as a result of Nates antics, and how to not make a passion frolfer angry (hint: don't call it frolf).
"A group of Colorado teens being chased down by a fisherman. What could this possibly have to do with Utah," you ask? Well, it could only mean that the movie was filmed here! For our final October episode, we talk I'll Always Know What you Did Last Summer with one of the stars from the movie, KC Clyde.
We can all agree that 2020 has felt like a cursed year...so fraternizing with some witches couldn't make it any worse, right? For a family-friendly Halloween experience, we would suggest stopping by WitchFest at Gardner Village! You can enjoy a scavenger hunt, some Halloween themed treats, and maybe even see a live witch or two. There's plenty of fun to be had here this October. Let us know which witch is your favorite!

From 1979 to 2006, this was the premier haunted attraction in Utah with its original location in Ogden and then in South Salt Lake. Headed by the Queen of Haunts, Cydney Neil, it really paved the way for the abundance of haunted houses we enjoy today.
Lucky for us, we were able to visit with and interview The Queen herself. A very big thanks to Cydney for taking the time to reminisce about the old days. Let us know what you remember about this gone but not forgotten Utah treasure.

One of the greatest things about Utah is a group of people very dedicated to decorating their houses for Halloween. Rocky Mountain Haunters was established in 2001 by people that shared the same vision of props, decorations, and spooky fun. A big thanks to Greg Shoop (The Map Master) of RMH for talking with us for this episode.
Please go out and see what these great people have done. Here is a link for the map:

RC Willey has been making "your home, your way" since as early as the 1930's. It also has to be the only place you can find hot dogs, Nintendo Switches, Warren Buffett and a retail credit card. Did they sponsor this episode? Not directly, but in a way they did with all the great deals they've been giving the Utah community over the years!

September 11, 1996, will forever be remembered by the people of Spanish Fork. While normally a peaceful place, the controversial and political rock band Rage Against the Machine shook the town to its very core when they performed here. A big thank you to Clint Betts for revisiting this dark day in history with us. This episode may elicit some strong feelings. We would encourage that if you have a brother that has dogs that you have them with you while listening to this episode for protection.

We've finally arrived at the moment you have all been waiting for... We visited Lagoon! Thanks to our guest Matt for accompanying us on this journey.
Lagoon is a very special place as it is the largest amusement park in Utah. There is no way we will even scratch the surface of this place in one episode so stay tuned for many more in the future.
While we talk about a lot of things, we have many questions for you the listener. What is your favorite ride? What are your thoughts on the new ride? Were the mermaids on Tidal Wave always fully clothed? Would you recognize us if we dressed up as McGruff for Halloween this year?
As always, find us on our social media or send us an email. We love to hear from you.

Happy 24th of July! There's nothing more fitting for a Pioneer Day than listening to an episode of This is a Place in which we talk about This is the Place.
A sincere thank you to the park and for getting us in touch with our guest Brian Westover who gave us a lot of great insights in to the park.
Did Brigham Young utter the words “This is the place?” What ever happened to the park’s haunted village? Can I safely visit the park during the pandemic at a discount? Listen in to find out! While you’re at it, be a pioneer yourself and share this podcast with 47 of your closest friends. It’s what Brigham would have wanted.

If you find yourself at 1904 W. & 5400 S. in Taylorsville, your dollar won't go quite as far as it once did. Close to four years ago the movie theater at this location closed it's doors forever so developers could fry bigger fishes... and chicken... and steaks. Many changes happened over the 36 years that the building stood. In 1980, it started as the first 6 plex Fast forward 20 years and you'll find the dollar theater that many remember. It may not be comparable to the behemoths around the corner these days, this isn't a theater we will soon forget.

Did you know that there is a 75-year-old sculpture garden in Utah? Neither did we. You'll also be interested to find out that it is the only designated visionary art environment in the state of Utah. Look at us getting all cultured.
Gilgal is an eccentric spot in where you can take a stroll, snap some cool Instagram pics, and enjoy some quiet. You're going to find a sphynx with the face of Joseph Smith, symbolic stones, and maybe even a transient or two, but we suggest going to this garden is something you should do.

There's nothing like a warm summer night under the stars while listening to one of your favorite bands live. USANA Amphitheater is a great place to have such an experience. Every year (this year being the exception) you'll find a long list of concerts to enjoy from country to rap. Grab a premium reserved seat closer to the stage or chill back on the grass. However you do it, you'll find a great atmosphere, stellar music and a picturesque view of the Wasatch Front.
If halfway through the episode you wonder "this seems a little long for an episode on USANA" then you are probably right. But what would an episode be without arguments over bands that we like, well timed dad jokes or some shade thrown at Barry Manilow? Well, it wouldn't be an episode of This is a Place. So throw that podcast app on 2x speed and enjoy!

As these hot summer days begin, putting on your swim trunks and sliding down a large waterslide would be perfect! Unfortunately, you're going to have to look elsewhere as this former water park is nothing but weeds and graffiti.
That doesn't mean we can't talk about the good old days though, right? Join as us we revisit Raging Waters (also known as Seven Peaks and Wild Wave). Did Bill and Ted frequent this water park? When is opening back up? Did Nate really ride the first-ever H20 rollercoaster? Do we live in Glendale? You may have some of these questions answered upon listening to this episode.

What do pirate mini golf, pet hospitals and a late 90's pop song have in common? All of it happened at this special place.
49th Street Galleria or The Fun Dome was a unique place that found it's way in to the hearts of Utahan's starting in 1983. While the building has undergone changes, renovations and failed business opportunities over the years, many will never forget the fond memories once forged at this location.
