When Marcus and I told people we were launching a podcast about chips the universal first response was: who do you think is going to listen to a podcast about chips? Also universal was the next thing they’d say…you know what chips you need to talk about, right! Or, they’d enthusiastically ask if we had tried Chip X from State Y or Country Z. We’d eventually have a long conversation with these people about chips and the culture surrounding them. Everyone has an opinion on chips, and so do we.

Chips are cultural. They’re regional. They’re personal, and like the best music, the thought of a snack size bag of chips can whisk you back to a moment from your past. Chips are both time machine and current moment. What Marcus and I love most about chips is how snackable they are. That might sound obvious, but lots of chips aren’t snackable. Some chips are so heavily seasoned or so niche in their flavor profile that you simply can’t gnosh through an entire bag in one sitting. While this criteria isn’t healthy, it is certainly one way to measure how good an individual chip is. Would you eat more of them on autopilot?

It was clear we were going to launch this podcast when, while watching March Madness, Marcus and I started talking about chips. We were eating a bag of unispired tortilla chips with so-so salsa, a double no-no in Texas, where chips and salsa are like table wine: they’re just supposed to be there. Chips are transportive. When you discuss a particular brand or flavor you have to talk about everything else that comes to mind. This could be pop culture, politics, growing up, and anything in between. And so, we set out to make this podcast. We wanted to continue the conversation after March Madness, and we wanted to keep talking to you about the chips you love and the memories, anecdotes, and opinions that come to mind.

In our first episode we talk about the origins of the modern chip and also introduce the podcast. We plan to release a new episode every two weeks. You have a lot of content competing for your attention. We hope you’ll give us a try. We’re also launching this podcast when most of the world is on lockdown from COVID-19. If you’re like us, you find yourself planning your trips to the store and rationing the food you bring home. In our households we’re stretching bags of chips that would normally be motored through in an afternoon or two. And maybe we’re even experimenting with Kale Chips (jk, lol, they’re not chips).

Hopefully you’re social distancing and hopefully you have a friend like Marcus who will text you to let you know about new chips on the aisle, and if not, we’re happy to be those friends.
