KWOD hasn't talked to John Paul Ried in some years. This will be a good chance to get caught up with this prolific writer of pure fantasy. The Co-Vid had slowed down his writing and introduction to more stories in his world of Palamar. Angela Carling was raised in Palm Springs California, but lives Arizona with her husband, three kids and five felines. After years of denial she finally admitted that she is a hopeless romantic which led her to write her first Young Adult book, “Unbreakable Love”. Since then she’s published three more books, “Shackled”, “Becoming Bryn” and “The Secret Keeper”. “Shackled” won the silver IPGA award in 2012 and has been optioned as a screenplay.
Angela always eats the frosting off her cake and leaves the rest, and can be caught singing in public bathrooms just for the acoustics. When she’s not writing YA novels, she’s mentoring teen writers, making pizza with her family or dreaming of taking a nap, not necessarily in that order.

Arizona author, T.M. Williams, will be speaking at the Dewey-Humboldt Town Library on Saturday, March 7th from 10am-1pm. She will be discussing the importance of Search & Rescue Dogs for missing persons in the forests of northern Arizona. Some years ago, a child went missing in Dewey and this book was inspired by that case and all the other odd cases of missing persons in our country's forest regions.
Clusters: Case of the Missing is a paranormal mystery inspired by Emmett Trapp's disappearance. After Emmett was found dead miles from his home, author, T.M. Williams sponsored a SAR Dog and they named the dog after this little boy. This book is a fiction paranormal mystery, and also includes true missing person cases around the U.S.

For our new regular time slot this month we will be featuring, Mister Lucky. Mister Lucky is an American rock band formed in 2013 and based in Phoenix, Arizona. Mister Lucky's music has been inspired by a variety of artists including Crowded House, Wilco, The Gin Blossoms, The Foo Fighters, and The Beatles to name but a few. Building on a foundation of Power Pop, their songs feature a variety of other flavors including Americana, Roots, Alternative Rock, and straight up Pop. Mister Lucky's repertoire is a collection of heart breaking ballads, uplifting testimonials, and songs that will make you want to get out on the highway and drive.
The band is working on it's first full length record as well as playing shows throughout Phoenix and the Southwest United States.

Jeff Gonzales was raised in Phoenix's East Valley, writing songs for his first band The Dirt Bike Kids at 15. He then served as bassist/vocalist of Tempe's Loud Americans, with the late Marco Holt. In 2005, he joined psychedelic pop band Skybox, relocating with them to Chicago. During this time he began to write and perform as a solo artist, embracing more traditional folk and country music in his songwriting, and testing his songs out at the El train stops in the Windy City. Gonzales later returned to Arizona and recorded his solo debut, The Lights Just Went Out..., which he produced with Aaron Ott. The 6-song EP earned him high praise, including Songwriter of the Year honors from YabYum Music & Arts. A new record is currently in the works, with the single The Robin & Birch Tree to precede the new record, sometime in 2015.
D.G. Scherrer is a singer-songwriter and award-winning poet from Phoenix, AZ. He began writing and singing songs when he was twelve years old, as the front man for a junior high school punk band. Since then he has become something of a songwriter's songwriter, crafting dark, catchy, lyrically sophisticated tunes in the tradition of Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt. Still, the bite and immediacy of punk remains apparent in his songs, as well as in the sheer volume of his voice when he roars a chorus. Scherrer draws heavily on older American music forms, particularly blues, gospel and country.
Grier Cooper began ballet lessons at age five and left home at fourteen to study at the School of American Ballet in New York. She has performed on three out of seven continents with companies such as San Francisco Ballet, Miami City Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet, totaling more than thirty years of experience as a dancer, teacher and
performer.
Her work has been praised as “poignant and honest” with “emotional hooks that penetrate deeply.” She writes and blogs about dance in the San Francisco Bay Area and has interviewed and photographed a diverse collection dancers and performers including Clive Owen, Nicole Kidman, Glen Allen Sims and Jessica Sutta. She is the author of Build a Ballerina Body and The Daily Book of Photography.

Lynn Mullican was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where she currently resides with her husband and three children. Doug Jones, famed actor best known for his work as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, El Fauno and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, and the Silver Surfer in Rise Of The Silver Surfer, has been cast to portray the menacing Count Orlok. His makeup has been created by Mike Elizalde of Spectral Motion Studios.

Mill's End carries on a tradition of American Alt-Country that blends modern influences with folk/Americana songwriting. The band's sound is firmly rooted in a style reflective of Drive By Truckers, Whiskeytown, the Jayhawks and the Old 97's, but with a healthy dose of classic and progressive rock. In 2008, jam sessions between singer/guitarist Jeff Bump and drummer Mark Bainbridge inspired the two to form Mill's End, and they soon added bassist Geoff Butzine and lead guitarist/vocalist Keith Perillo to round out the foursome. A substantial repertoire of original songs quickly followed, as did a desire to share with the public a down-to-earth approach to experiencing live music. Mill's End currently plays at popular Tempe and Phoenix-area clubs including the Yucca Tap Room, The Sail Inn and The Rogue Bar to an ever-expanding fan base. The band has also made headlines by playing for thousands at a Phoenix Coyotes playoff game and recording tunes for a campaign by Valley Metro to promote the use of public transportation in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Mill's End has recently released their first full-length album and continue to expand opportunities to share their intimate brand of live shows.

Phoenix-based indie rock band Treasurefruit spikes sultry swing motifs with classic country twang in the name of rock and roll. The quartet is currently recording their first full album "Poisonous Dwellers of the Desert" in an all analog (reel-to-reel tape) format, set for a Spring 2015 release. David “Dave” Beaty got his start in the Comic Book industry in 1994 as a “ghost” artist working on backgrounds for Guardians of the Galaxy annual #4 for Marvel Comics. Since that time he’s been published as a writer, penciler, inker, cartoonist, and colorist. He has done “credited” work for BOOM Studios, Antarctic Press, Aspen Entertainment, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics. He is known mostly for his work on such titles as Justice League of America, Grifter, Batman Inc, Flashpoint Wonder Woman, Brightest Day and his creator owned series Bushi Tales. He is also a highly sought after sketch card artist who has worked on numerous high profile sets featuring lots fan favorite charaters such as Superman, Batman, X-men, Mighty Mouse, Betty Boop, and Vampirella.Currently he is working on several new creator owned titles. Dave lives in Prescott Valley, Arizona with his lovely wife Micah and their three pets (Sato, Nermal and Kirby the wonder dog).

Our two related clans, the Caldwells and the Fowers, have been creating costumes for ourselves, our kids, and others for decades. The majority of that art form is inspired by comics and the notion of a Hero or Heroine. Most everyone wants to be a Hero to someone. So, why not get the chance to dress up like one every once in a while? We wanted to make sure anyone could have that chance so we started "Garage FX". The concept is this: Teach others how to simply make great Cosplay (Costume Play) works of art using everyday items you can find in your garage or hardware store. Since we began this effort, we have created projects from Venom to Predator to Spawn (in many forms). Inspired by huge demand at past comic conventions our latest efforts have been making movie-prop worthy Halo Spartan Armor as well as those pizza eating Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All pieces are made from the foam floor mats you step on in your garage, old plastic buckets, pool floats, PVC pipe, burlap bags, Elmer's glue, chicken wire, packing Styrofoam and more. For the more intense student we even teach how to make your own patterns, sew elaborate costumes and cast latex and silicon masks and props. We love what we do at Garage FX! Mickey Chaney Jr., also known as Spooky Kid, got his start in the comic industry during October 2011 when Marco Regalado of Pop Culture Paradise found him sketching while out in Tempe one day.
In the three years that he's been working in comics Mickey has worked on a number of books including; "No Man's Land", the "Dead Diva's" series, "Hooded Cobra", and "Dark Light". While he's been involved in multiple titles he is best known for his portrait works.
Apart from highschool art courses Mickey does not have any formal art education. Currently Mickey is working with fellow local artists Rob Hicks, Derrick Tipton and Ruben Rosas in Spiral Ink Comics, which produces the books "Hooded Cobra" and "Dark Light".

Spiral Ink Comics was founded in 2013 by independent comic artists Rob Hicks, Derrick Tipton, and Mickey Chaney. The three artists met in 2012 while attending the infamous weekly "doodle night" event held at Jesse James Comics in Glendale, AZ. During the production of Rob's debut comic title, Hooded Cobra: The Den of Serpents, Mickey offered up his inking skills for the book and later Derrick offered his coloring expertise for the book's cover. Shortly thereafter, writer JJ Shelton approached the group about a co-writing opportunity for the rest of the series and the rest, as they say, is history! Derrick and Rob also recruited cover artist Ruben Rosas to add yet another variety of style to the company. David Lee Summers is an author, editor and astronomer living somewhere between the western and final frontiers in Southern New Mexico. We sat down with this terrifically awesome band at the Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention this last weekend. We got on the subject of time travel and wait till you hear what happens during the interview.

We sat down with Dee Astell at the Wild Wild West Steampunk Convention this last weekend. She had just finished with the Steampunk Fashion Show which had more entrants then any show she had the priviledge of being a part of. We talked about cosplay, costume design, WWWC3, and then we even talked about the upcoming costume contest at LepreCon in May 2014.
Allen Amis is a costume and prop builder working out of Chandler, Arizona. He got his start when Star Wars costuming ignited his passion for building and weathering sci-fi armor. He's won awards and accolades for his ability to bring artistic concepts and renderings to life as wearable costumes and displayable props. His most famous costume, The Samurai Boba Fett, is a show-stopper that even took a prize at Star Wars Celebration, the largest Star Wars convention in the US, and was featured in IO9, Geek Tyrant, and more. He recently finished a full-set Mass Effect Commander Shepard armor, Borderlands masks for an upcoming UAT fan film, finished a Fallout-inspired Mandalorian armor set for the Artmor Charity Auction, Appeared in the widely popular cosplay calendar MenvsCosplay, and has appeared in his Samurai Boba Fett in the hugely popular "Bohemian Rhapsody: Star Wars edition" paradoy video created by the Digital video team at UAT. He's always eager to help fans get their start on bringing their favorite costumes to life, and does several panels and talks throughout the year on the building process. Darryl Dawson has been writing professionally since 2009. His first book, the short story collection The Crawlspace, was published in October of that year. He is a Los Angeles native currently residing in Phoenix, AZ, where he works as a video editor for a local TV station. Ronald is a member of the Arizona Authors Association and the Phoenix Writers Club and a professional member of the Society of Southwestern Authors. He recently completed my first round of courses at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts and is now a certified hypnotherapist. Ronald stated, "The Plaz Seschni series is overall Science Fiction, maybe some Urban Fantasy, with a few Horror elements. When it comes to fiction, my primary genres are Science Fiction and Fantasy. I have nothing against the Horror genre, but I don’t think having vampires in a book makes it horror." From the Historical Information: After nearly twenty five standard years of research there was a breakthrough, the one that led to the establishment of Plaz Seschni. Dr. Nestri Vas Juliuan developed what had been called Serum XVF-1065-VB-9099. After a series of near successful experiments, Dr. Vas Juliuan was certain he had the right combination. So certain, in fact, that he made himself the subject for that critical experiment. Suffice it to say it worked, and Order Ruby came into being at that moment. We will be talking about adventure books, gaming and science. Sean Ellis is a diverse Arizona author who is also now the science columnist for The WOD Newspaper. Sean Ellis is the author of several thriller and adventure novels. He is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources Policy from Oregon State University. Sean is also a member of the International Thriller Writers organization. He currently resides in Arizona, where he divides his time between writing, adventure sports, and trying to figure out how to save the world.
We will be talking to Executive Producer, John Waldron about the movie production of Locker 13 and the western town built to produce the movie. Locker 13 is the story of Skip (Jason Spisak, The Vampire Diaries), a young ex-convict who takes a position as a night janitor at an old-west theme park. His supervisor Archie (Jon Gries, Napoleon Dynamite), teaches him the ropes, but more importantly attempts to convey critical philosophical messages through a series of four stories: a down and out boxer (Ricky Schroder, NYPD Blue, Silver Spoons, The Champ) is given the opportunity to become a real golden gloves killer; an assassin (Rick Hoffman, Suits, Battleship) kidnaps three people in order to find out who hired him for his latest hit; a new recruit (Bart Johnson, High School Musical) is initiated into a lodge of fez-wearing businessmen where hazing can take a malevolent turn; and a member of a suicide club (Jason Marsden, Boy Meets World, White Squall) introduces real fear into a man about to jump to his death. Sharon Skinner is an award-winning writer who received her B.A. in English from Ottawa University and her M.A. in Creative Writing from Prescott College. She is currently a board member for Anthology, inc. and the AAGP (American Association of Grant Professionals). Creator of Wimmen’s Comix. Her subjects have ranged from Wonder Woman and the Powerpuff Girls to her own teenage superheroine, GoGirl!, and from women cartoonists and superheroines to women who kill. Aprilynne Pike is an internationally best-selling American author best known for her debut novel Wings, which was released on May 5, 2009.
Discouraged that, after years of work, she had yet to achieve publication, one November morning in 2007 Aprilynne convinced herself that she was pursuing a foolish dream. Neither she nor her husband were sure how they could afford to pay for his final year of law school and keep their children fed. So Aprilynne resolved to teach childbirth classes again, this time for a fee, and actively seek doula clients in order to make ends meet. This would leave very little time for writing, but she decided it had become an unrealistic and impractical pursuit and the time had come to let it go.

We talked to James A. Owen at Phoenix ComiCon last weekend. James is the founder and executive director of Coppervale International, an art and design studio that also published the periodicals International Studio and Argosy, develops television and film projects, and is redesigning an entire town in Arizona, among other ventures. James has written and illustrated two dozen StarChild comics, the award-winning MythWorld series of novels (published in Germany and France), the bestselling series, The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica, the inspirational nonfiction book Drawing out the Dragons, and more. More than a million copies of his publications are in print, and are sold all over the world.
James began his career in publishing approximately two years before he was old enough to get a driver’s license, and was the youngest publisher ever to be an exhibitor at the San Diego Comicon. He founded Taliesin Press in 1992, both writing and illustrating the company’s debut publication, a Dickensian comic book titled StarChild.
We talked LIVE from Phoenix ComiCon with legendary fantasy author, Terry Brooks, about his career and his love for writing. We talked about his writing advice based on his career in "Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons from a Writing Life," first published in 2003, and we talked about writing "The Phantom Menace" for George Lucas and Star Wars. There was also a surprise visit from Peter David during the interview and we got the converstation on this recording. This prompted some questions/answers on Terry's health and the love and support from his wife. Terry Brooks is a great example of a writer who had several successful careers in his life, and has been able to choose the one he loved most; writing.

Raymond Swanland is a freelance illustrator who began his career working on the Oddworld Inhabitants series of video games and has created artwork for Magic: The Gathering, World of Warcraft, Aliens vs. Predator, ImagineFX, Disturbed, many sci-fi/fantasy novels, and more. He won a Spectrum award in 2004 and the David Gemmel Legend Award in 2012. His recent work includes a series of covers for Games Worshop's Warhammer 40,000 and the marketing artwork for the DC Comics animated movie, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. And Raymond Swanland will be the Artist Guest of Honor, his first, at LepreCon 39, May 9-12th. Raymond is also up for this year's Spectrum Award again.
Jack is a former English teacher, naval officer, Philadelphia taxi driver, customs officer, and motivational trainer. With the nomination of Echo, his work has been on the final Nebula ballot nine of the last ten years. He won the award in 2007 for Seeker. His first novel, The Hercules Text, was published in the celebrated Ace Specials series, and won the Philip K. Dick Special Award. In 1991, he received the first $10,000 UPC International Prize for his novella "Ships in the Night." The Engines of God was a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and his novella "Time Travelers Never Die" was nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula. Omega received the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best SF novel, 2003. McDevitt's novels frequently raise questions which he does not attempt to answer. He prefers to leave ambiguities to puzzle and intrigue his readers: "Some things are best left to the reader's very able imagination." McDevitt lives in Georgia with his wife Maureen, where he plays chess, reads mysteries, and eats lunch regularly with his cronies. And Jack McDevitt will be available at LepreCon 39, May 9-12th. Norm Jones spent his first 35 years managing his own life. After two failed marriages, he admitted failure, and turned wholeheartedly to God to change his life. Michael D’Ambrosio is from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area and has been writing fiction since 2000. He regularly appears at science-fiction, fantasy and horror conventions around the country. Biography of Eddie Upnick, author of Time Will Tell, Future Tense, and 2052
Eddie Upnick was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953. He graduated from Benjamin Cardozo High School in Bayside, New York in 1971. In 1976, he graduated from New Paltz State University of New York with a BA in Anthropology. He has worked as a joke writer for Rodney Dangerfield, among others, and as a situation comedy writer off and on between the years 1975-1996. He invented a game called Super Chess in 1984. Super Chess was declared one of the top ten strategy games of the year in Games Magazine. He has been married since 1981 and also shares his home with two parrots. While on vacation in Antigua, in 1995, Upnick met an Englishman named Sidney Dowse. Mr. Dowse was one of the men who had escaped from Sagan, the prison camp portrayed in the 1963 movie, The Great Escape. Mr. Dowse had information that was not in any history book. Dowse related events both from his own recollections, as well as those he himself had been told by his associate, Stewart Menzies, who was the head of MI-6 during World War Two. Menzies had daily meetings with Winston Churchill. Upnick made a promise to Sidney Dowse that he would not repeat anything he had revealed to him until after his death. Mr. Dowse died in 2008. Mr. Dowse’s incredible recollections inspired the writing of Time Will Tell, Future Tense and the final book in the trilogy 2052.. Certain facts, unknown to history, are woven into these stories. Future Tense is the sequel to Time Will Tell, which takes place twenty years after TWT ended, covering the years 2022-2028. The third book in the series titled 2052 continues the story of the next generation players as we delve deeper into our possible future.

Weston began writing professionally in 1997. He won the Bram Stoker Award for his first novel, Scarecrow Gods, in 2005. His co-written collection of short stories titled Appalachian Galapagos, was nominated for the Pushcart Prize for Short Fiction. in 2008, his novella Redemption Roadshow was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award for Best Long Fiction. Weston's work has appeared in comic books (IDW Publishing), professional writing guides, magazines, anthologies, as well as his own novels. He has been widely reviewed and has been hailed by his contemporaries as "one of the few new writers who will help redefine the field of dark literature for the future" (Edward Lee (writer)). Weston holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature from Excelsior College and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from National University (California). He travels extensively to book signings and conventions where he has been Gross Out Contest bouncer, toastmaster and guest of honor. He is a frequent speaker at libraries and schools. He has been an adjunct faculty member for Cochise Community College and runs the on-line Guerrilla Fiction Writing Workshop. He currently lives in Sierra Vista, Arizona with his wife, and fellow author, Yvonne Navarro.
Alexander Galant was the historical researcher for the novel 'Dracula the Un-Dead', which was on the New York Times Best Sellers list in October 2009. Alexander also co-wrote the screenplay adaptation that was optioned briefly by Jan de Bont and adapted the novel into a dramatic stage reading for the Toronto book launch of Dracula the Un-Dead, which brought out the highest turnout for any event on the book tour.

Touched By Two Souls: Sleeveless Emotions is a project Charles Burgess started and pulled in Jerrmond Walker in to be a part of this book because of his admiration of the live performances of this local Milwaukee poet. Jerrmond "JDub" Walker was introduced to poetry as a means of personal therapy. A friend brought him to a local poetry set and his love for the art flourished almost immediately. Known to Milwaukee's poetry scene as "JDub", listeners of his work understood that when he hit the stage -the truth would flow. Bold, strong and sometimes even crass to the sensitive ear, JDub's stories of tainted love, social and community dissatisfaction, and an occasional sexual exploitation won him the favor and respect of a thriving poetry community. We were in a spell where there weren’t any good sci-fi movies or books coming out to capture my attention. A friend jokingly suggested that I should write my own. It was a near death experience that made PJ Hultstrand pick her story up again after years of letting it collect dust. She changed the heroine, the location in history, the time period (somewhat), and added the premise of time-travel, because over the years, she had evolved, becoming very interested in the possibilities of time-travel. PJ's WORDS: “Battle for Time” is book 3 of my Chasing Time series. I have plans for about 14 books in this series. I started my first story back about 17 years ago on a dot matrix printed copy of the beginnings of what turned out to be an epic romantic time-travel adventure. Back then, the story was a simple historical romance about a warrior princess who must protect a king from a neighboring country who doesn’t believe in her abilities to do the protecting. I had a palace schematic drawn out which had become a yellowed reminder, years later, of that story that had been stuck inside me all those years. After my brush with death, it was time for this story to come to life.
