We all expect certain things from life such as having a career that fulfills us, meeting our soul mate – the person who understands you completely and to be happy and healthy. Those were your expectations and it’s great if everything went as planned but what if life panned out differently?

These curve balls can come in all shapes and sizes, for some of us it’s an illness, for others it could be the loss of someone important or not achieving something which seem to flip our expectations on their head.

In this episode, we’re going to discuss how to deal with these curve balls and actually use them as stepping stones into a fantastic life.

Recently we have become inspired by the work of Dr Claire Weekes and her book ‘Self Help For Your Nerves’ which was recommended by a client of ours.

Her philosophy is that our most effective defense against anxiety attacks involves the use of paradox; meaning doing the opposite of what you think you should do when dealing with these feelings. She recommends four methods of dealing with these symptoms which are: face the symptoms – do not run away; accept what is taking place – do not fight it; float with your feelings – do not tense and let time pass – do not be impatient.

The lesson from Dr Claire Weekes is that it’s your attitude or approach matter more than techniques you’re using to try and combat your issues. We discuss this fascinating topic in this episode.

Have you found yourself say yes to something when you really wanted to say no? It’s almost like saying yes to something is too easy, it’s an automatic response!

When we’re asked to do something we may start to think, no, I don’t want to do that or I haven’t got the time to do that, but then you might start to feel nervous, fearful and then you worry you may come across as rude or unkind and then before you know you’re saying a big fat yes to something that you know you really want to say ‘no’ to!

We are discussing the consequences of saying ‘yes’ to everything and how you can learn to say ‘no’ and claim back your choice.

Joy is very different from the feeling of excitement, which is fun and amazing, but we see joy as a much fuller feeling, more sustaining and rewarding. Cultivating joy is one of the most important steps we can take toward creating fulfilling lives.

Excitement can appear to be genuine joy but in reality it’s not. For example someone winning the Lottery could start shaking, crying, screaming, or hyperventilating, we could describe this as happiness, but actually it’s evidence that their neurological fight-or-flight mechanism has been triggered. Switching on this mechanism switches off the physiological processes that allow us to relax, connect, and absorb joyful experience.

We discuss joy and how to cultivate the deep and meaningful, peaceful feelings that accompany it.

Do you make it a priority to convey loving feelings through loving actions to those who are most important to you in your life? All to often those we give the fewest appreciative words and kind actions to are ourselves and our nearest and dearest.

We consider being loving as appreciating, caring, helping and sharing with that person or yourself. These habits spread positive energy and it feels gratifying and safe to be our authentic selves within this kind of loving relationship.

In this episode we are discussing how to be loving both towards yourself and others.

Guilt is an emotional warning sign that most people learn through their childhood social development. Its purpose is to let us know when we’ve done something wrong, to help us develop a better sense of our behaviour and how it affects others and ourselves.

This is known as ‘healthy’ or ‘appropriate’ guilt because it serves a purpose in trying to help direct our moral or behavioural compass. It prompts us to re-examine our behaviour so that we don’t end up making the same mistake twice.

Unhealthy guilt’s purpose is only to make us feel bad about ourselves for no real legitimate reason. This can be excessive in terms of feeling constantly guilty about what you have done, haven’t done, should have done, what someone else has done and the list goes on.

In this podcast we want to discuss how to deal with both.

Gratitude is expressing appreciation for what you have as opposed to a consumer-oriented emphasis on what you think you want or need.

By learning to cultivate gratitude, we are able to increase our well-being and happiness. Getting into the habit of expressing appreciation both to ourselves and others will result in an increase to our energy and overall feelings of joy so we though this was a great topic for discussion.

Body language for communication and health is the subject of this podcast. Good communication is the foundation of any successful relationship, whether it is personal or professional. It’s important to consider that it’s not just the spoken word we should pay attention to, it’s our non-verbal communication – our facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and tone of voice – which actually speak the loudest and that we do completely unconsciously!

The ability to understand and use non-verbal communication, or body language, is a powerful tool which can help you connect with others, but also with yourself. Certain postures and tone of voice mean different things to us and we can work with this to improve our health, wellbeing and confidence.

In this episode we are discussing how to deal effectively with anger and frustration. Feeling angry is part of being human. It is a natural response to being attacked, insulted, deceived or frustrated.

Anger is normal, but it can also be quite scary. When you respond to something with anger, adrenalin causes your body to prepare for ‘fight or flight’, giving you energy and making you feel tense. Releasing this energy and tension is good for you, but it’s not so easy at times to do so in ways that are constructive. In most situations, fighting back or running away (‘fight or flight’) isn’t helpful and anger can often lead to responses that make things worse rather than better.

Avoiding avoidance simply means trying to avoid things we perceive as scary or challenging.

As children, we learnt that this strategy was effective in keeping us safe by avoiding situations associated with pain and danger. Unfortunately, as we grow, we can find ourselves applying the same logic in other scenarios such as things that make us uncomfortable or afraid.

Every time you withdraw from something you perceive as scary, you may get a short term feeling of relief, but this calm doesn’t last. This is common with phobias, a person starts by avoiding the initial thing that they fear. This then develops and expands to other things because the brain starts to create different connections and associations which increases the number of things being avoided.

There are obvious times when you will experience grief, like the death of a loved one, but we also experience other times when we grieve in our life, such as the end of a relationship, loss of health, money, career etc.

And there are even more subtle losses like our youth, children growing up or dreams that we haven’t actualised.

Interestingly, any change, even positive change involves loss. Getting promoted or married are changes that we think of as wanted and very positive, but these are changes and can involve an element of loss too.

We usually see luck as being some magical thing outside of our control, but if we view luck this way, we can end up feeling negative or resentful of people we consider to be ‘lucky’. It stops us from realising that some ones good fortune has more than likely been through good choices that this person has made.

We are suggesting you view luck as a ‘feeling’ rather then something out of your control. Just as you can choose to be happy, you can also choose to be ‘lucky’.

We believe that learning how to flourish is a key element of living a life you love. The feeling of happiness is too fleeting to invest all our energy into and if we aspire to flourish instead, we will find it fulfilling.

Flourishing is all about the journey; it’s about creating positive change while boosting your well being instead of thinking I’ll be happy when such and such happens, it’s about having a brilliant life while your reaching for your goals.

Why do we need to deal with change in a positive way?

Change is coming because everything changes. When you consider nature, does it stay static or is it consistently changing? Seasons come and go and, unfortunately, we all get older. This is the same with our lives.

Whether you look forward to a change or dread it, what is for certain is that change triggers powerful effects in your body and with your emotions. Importantly You can increase your sense of empowerment and steer your life into positive territory when you know how to deal with change effectively which is what we discuss in this episode.

In this episode we are looking at ways you can stop assuming the worst in your life or what we call, catastrophising. We all create stories in our head; it’s a natural thing for our brain to do, it likes us to make sense of things based on past experience, so helps us to expect or assume certain things for certain events.

This quote by John Milton, sums it up so well “The mind is it’s own place and in itself can make a heaven of hell or a hell of heaven”

We discuss how can you cultivate real, sustainable and consistent contentment in this episode.
