I review the story about Jesus' first miracle, performed at a wedding in Cana. It was the winter of 27 AD, and Jesus attended the wedding with his mother, Mary, and five of his disciples. Mary brought to Jesus’ attention that there was a shortage of wine at the event, a critical error on the part of the groom's family. We learn how Jesus responded to Mary and what it meant for their relationship as well as his relationship with every other human being on earth. Then, we delve into the details of his first miracle – how he turned water into wine, who was present, and what it symbolized. Through this simple act, Jesus started to reveal to the public his true identity and purpose.
We take a closer look at Jesus's encounter with Satan, the ruler of this world. Who and what is Satan? What does his name mean and how did he become the chief of the fallen angels? I discuss all of this and the intense struggle between Jesus and Satan, as Satan attempts to thwart Jesus's mission even before it begins.
How does Jesus begin his public ministry as an adult? By walking from Nazareth to the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist. In this lesson, I explore the baptism of Jesus, including the nuances of the various stories from Matthew, Mark and Luke, and their commonalities in how the baptism itself unfolded. We look at how God revealed himself that day, why then, what it all meant, and why Jesus was baptized at all.
How did the early church come to recognize and celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th? In this episode, I cover the centuries since the Nativity story and the religious and cultural forces that have shaped the holiday we now celebrate as Christmas.
I continue with Luke's version of the Nativity story. Gabriel appears to a young girl living in Nazareth. Luke tells the story of Mary and Joseph, the young couple and their travels to Bethlehem. While in Bethlehem, Mary gives birth to Jesus, her firstborn son. Luke describes the shepherds in the nearby fields and the presence of the divine. I share my thoughts about Luke's story about the birth of Jesus.

Two Bible authors, Matthew and Luke, each wrote about the birth of Jesus in their gospels. Their two versions of this story have both similarities and some important differences. In this episode, I begin our review of both versions by talking about Luke and his story. He starts his story about the birth of Jesus was a fascinating story about Mary's relatives, Zechariah and Elizabeth. And the appearance of the archangel Gabriel.

This episode explores Matthew's version of the Nativity Story. Matthew's story has several unique characters and events, including the appearance of the Magi and their meeting with King Herod. Matthew concludes his version with the Holy Family fleeing Bethlehem to Egypt, to escape Herod's slaughter of the innocents. I conclude the Nativity story series with some thoughts about what it means to us today.

Who were Jesus' earthly parents? In this lesson, I tell you about Mary and Joseph, and what life was like for them growing up in the small town of Nazareth in northern Galilee. Aside from a brief stint in Egypt as a child, Jesus spent the majority of his life in Nazareth, surrounded by his family and friends. In many ways, Mary, Joseph and their children lived a simple life, just as their ancestors had, based on Jewish traditions.

In the Bible, four hundred-plus years of Israel's long history are absent. This is the period of time between the end of the Old Testament after the book of Malachi and the beginning of the New Testament in Matthew's Gospel. In this video lesson, I walk through what happened in Israel during this time and how it impacted the life of Jesus. After all, Jesus was born in a particular place at a specific time and it is helpful to understand why.
