We often hear about fashion and clothing stylists and even food stylists, but every bit as important is the prop stylist. The folks who curate all the finishing touches that give a shot its sense of time and place. Prop stylists are often the real behind the scenes heroes of the amazing images that we see in magazines and advertisements.
New York based Robin Zachary is a Prop stylist with experience at all levels of the creative process, from prop styling, to creative direction and even photography. With over 20 years of experience in the advertising capital of the world, I knew that Robin would be the perfect person to speak with to gain insight into the world of collaborating with prop stylists.

Wedding Photography. So many new photographers decide to shoot weddings because they think it is a sound money making genre. So many wedding photography businesses fail quickly because said photographers had no idea how much work is actually involved in shooting a wedding and running a wedding business. It takes a special person to not only be good at wedding photography, but also to be able to make it a full-time business that supports a family of 4.
This was not the case for my guest Mr. Joseph Ellis. Along with his wife Stephanie, Joseph has shot over 800 weddings in the last 20 years after transitioning to weddings from his early career as a photojournalist. Together, the couple owns and operates Big Wall Family Photography studio in Dallas, Texas.
Joseph shared some great advice for new wedding photographers and lots of details about how he works with wedding couples and the gear he uses.

I had a great conversation this week with Mr. Marc Silber. Marc is a life-long photographer, best-selling author three times over, filmmaker and host of the Advancing Your Photography YouTube series.
Marc started out learning darkroom skills and the basics of photography at the legendary Peninsula School in Menlo Park, CA, in the '60s. If you are not familiar with the Peninsula School they are renowned for their no grade approach to education and support of student collaboration, positive risk taking, and creativity. Marc moved on to hone his skills to professional standards at the famed San Francisco Art Institute and has since moved into teaching photography in workshops all over the country.
One of the things I admire most about Marc is his dedication to education. Not just sharing his knowledge and experience, but his own continuing education and you will see in his books, his videos and even in our conversation, he has a brilliant quote from an inspirational photographer for almost any situation.
But his quotes are not just focused on iconic names like Adams and Leibovitz. He also makes it a point to learn from new photographers. When I booked Marc to be on the podcast, he shared a list of things that he has recently learned from talking to budding photographers and I thought that would make for a great conversation and provide some excellent teaching opportunities.

Who knew? Elopement Photography. I honestly didn't know it was a thing. I learned about this growing niche of wedding photography recently and in my search to find a great elopement photographer to speak with, I found an awesome photographer and entrepreneur — Brianna Parks.
Brianna is a 22-year-old California and Pacific Northwest elopement photographer who started a photography business after realizing a 9-5 job wasn't what she wanted to do with her life.
After two years of business in the traditional wedding scene, Brianna decided to take the leap and focus exclusively on elopements, or weddings with under 30 guests.
Her passion for her work is contagious and you will learn quite a bit from this young businesswoman — regardless of the genre of photography that you specialize in.

I think it is fair to say that the exorbitant pricing for some new camera gear is driving the expansion and popularity of the secondhand market. It has been a very long time since I purchased use gear or sold any for that matter, so I wanted to reach out to an expert.
My conversation in this episode is with Mr. Phil Kaplan. Phil is the Product and Marketing Manager for KEH Camera in Atlanta, Georgia.
You may have heard of KEH or seen their ads online. KEH has been around since 1979 and they are the original reseller of professional, collectible, and everyday camera gear.
They have over 60,000 items in stock at any given time. Much of which is sold at up to 40% below retail, and they offer the KEH Gear Assurance Guarantee which is a 180-day warranty on most equipment.
I reached out to Phil because I knew he would give me the straight scoop on today’s used camera market and also provide us with some great tips for buying and selling used gear.

I have two guests with me this week, they are Ron Oren and Yotam Gil who are two of the three co-founders of the company ImagenAI which is based in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
On their website, ImagenAI is described as “Your personalized photo editing assistant”.
ImagenAI never stops learning every parameter of your personal editing style. This is not just a preset that gives your photos a certain look. It learns YOUR style and processes your images the way you would. The benefit - time - you save tons of time and even if you shoot for fun - time is money or the opportunity to do something that you love - instead of laboring through image processing.

This week, I had an awesome opportunity to chat with the Queen of Personal Branding Photographers - Flor Blake.
Flor Blake is a portrait, editorial, and commercial photographer with a style consisting of imaginative, vibrant, and dynamic imagery.
She grew up in the Caribbean (the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico) where you are automatically surrounded by color, rawness, vivacity and "flavor", all of these elements greatly influence her work. With a Fashion Designer as a mom, Flor grew up among fabrics, patterns, and sketches, she even stitched her fingers a couple of times when playing in her mom's workroom. All of this helped shape her aesthetic and gave her a great understanding of how design and the creative process in general works.
Her professional background includes all aspects of theater, documentary coordination, video production and editing, and a degree in Advertising from the University of Puerto Rico.
She loves traveling (even if it's across the street), eating delicious food, and celebrating people's birthdays.
Flor is based in Denver, Colorado where she lives with her wife Ileanexis and their three plants.

This week, I had an awesome opportunity to chat with a man who is a self-described light painter.
Jason Page resides in Southern Florida, and he not only practices this incredible art form, but he has invented a series of tools called light painting brushes, that along with the help of some simple flashlights, allow a light painter to paint in similar ways to an artist with a brush and a canvas. Jason is widely recognized as a leader in the current light painting movement. Jason has pioneered numerous light painting techniques and with his innovation he's created groundbreaking images.
Jason's light painting work has been published internationally in print, as well as online he's exhibited his work in numerous shows and galleries, including locations like Palm Beach, Miami Amsterdam, and Moscow.
To quote Jason; "Light painting is its own art form. Just as drawing is an art form or painting is an art form, calling light painting a photographic technique would be the same thing as calling, painting a canvas technique."

Lack of preparation is one of the biggest obstacles to improving your photography, regardless of the genre that you shoot. So this week, I want to share some thoughts with you about shoot prep.
Just like most photography skills, preparation is a skill that can be learned and with some discipline and experience this is an ability that can be improved over time, by almost anyone.
So in this episode my goal is to help you not only understand the importance of proper prep for a shoot but to also walk you through the details that will make your shoots go smoother and help you achieve better results.

Personal Branding — Social Media — 4 words that make up two of the most misunderstood terms in the photography world.
You might think that's because they have nothing to do with actually taking pictures. But I would argue that they have everything to do with taking pictures — regardless of the genre that you shoot.
Make yourself comfortable and open up your mind to some new ideas that I sincerely believe can help you improve your photography and if it is one of your goals - your business as well.

World renowned child photographers, Regis and Kahran Bethencourt are a husband and wife duo and the very imaginative forces behind CreativeSoul Photography in Atlanta Georgia.
They gained global recognition with their AfroArt series of images that showcase the beauty and versatility of Afro hair. The collection was conceived as a way to empower kids of color around the world. Kahran and Reg recently authored their New York Times best-selling coffee table book, “Glory” which brings to life past, present, and future visions of black culture. With more than eleven years of working with hundreds of children, families and brands, they specialize in child and lifestyle photography while incorporating authentic visual storytelling. And I think their images are simply brilliant.
I love their energy and I want you to be sure that you check out their images via the links below.
Their images are bold, colorful, eye catching and best of all simply done. For all the creativity that goes into their images — you never lose sight of the subject and because they are providing an incredible experience, they are able to charge top dollar for their sessions.

Robert Trawick routinely describes himself as “the most interesting photographer in Oklahoma” or “the most famous photographer in Oklahoma that you have never heard of”. I am going to take it a step further and declare him the MOST famous photographer you have never heard of.
Robert has a long list of photographic accomplishments, and he loves sharing his knowledge, along with a few tricks honed over a 30+ year professional career.
A self-professed ‘time-traveler’, Robert has been active in the industry since 1980 receiving most of his formal training during a twenty-year career as a USAF photojournalist. A recent convert to mirrorless camera system — Fujifilm X Series — he encourages others to embrace new technologies to achieve their photographic goals. Just spend a few minutes with Robert to gain insight into the passion that drives him to share the joy of crafting fabulous images.
Robert is the co-host of the FotoFacts Podcast, a casual iTunes audio show highlighting photo education and industry influencers.
Robert happily shares life’s beautiful “Instagram's” with the inspirations in his life — a fabulously talented photographer wife Terri & amazing daughters Amy, Amber, Georgia and Shannon.

My TOGCHAT guests this week are Hasselblad Ambassadors Anna Devís and Daniel Rueda. Based in Valencia, Spain, Anna and Daniel are both trained architects who have combined their love for geometry, perspective, and storytelling to become the ultimate creative couple.
This creative duo uses their architectural backgrounds to tell stories through fun and surprising images that are far from conventional architecture photography. Their style is characterized by their visual sense of humor, creativity, precision, and a delicate aesthetic inspired by the city, geometry, and minimalism. Their images succeed in establishing magnetic and joyful narratives that smartly suggest both the nature of human relations and the fascination with the urban environment.

Photography critiques are traditionally nothing more than opinions offered by people who may be good at photography but who have little knowledge or concern for you or the reasons you took the photograph or how you took it. Critiques offer an opinion of what is wrong with your photograph based on their test and a bunch of creativity killer rules.
In this episode, I am going to share the science behind why photo critiques don’t work and I will teach you how to effectively ask for feedback on your work and how to properly give feedback that is useful and has a positive impact on the photographer.

I want to introduce you to a practical approach to composition that can have an immediate impact on your photography and all without having to follow any creativity killing rules.
Ansel Adams is famously quoted as saying: “There are no rules for good photographs, only good photographs.” —Ansel Adams
Or from another iconic master of photography — Mr. Edward Weston: “Rules of composition are deduced from the work of strong masters and used by weak imitators to produce… nothing.”
I sincerely believe that rules are CREATIVITY KILLERS. Actually science confirms that rules are creativity killers. The simple explanation is that once you are aware of the rules or worse yet, understand the rules — you are essentially in the box. Everything that you do in an attempt to be creative and think outside the box to be original will be hampered by your knowledge of the rules. I mean it is easier to think outside the box — when you don't know where the box is.

Join me for a great chat with Fashion and Lifestyle Photographer and fellow YouTuber — Irene Rudnyk! Irene is a self-taught fashion and lifestyle photographer located in Calgary, Canada.
About Irene in her own words:
My name is Irene Rudnyk, and I am a self-taught fashion and lifestyle photographer located in Calgary. I like to describe my style as romantic and artistic, I love to play around with light, softness, colors and textures. I definitely enjoy photographing people the most. I strive to make my models stand out in an image, making sure the background never overpowers the focal point of the picture.
Since I was a little girl I was drawn to photography and videography. My sister and I used to pretend that she was a model, and I was a photographer, we would dress up, do our make-up, and plan the poses and locations for photo shoots. When I was quite young and could afford it, I bought my first professional camera and instantly knew that photography was my passion. I started my journey as a fashion photographer, working mostly with agencies in Calgary, like Numa Models, Mode models and Imodels.
I have experimented with different styles and techniques and now as a developed photographer, I provide professional services like wedding photography, engagement, family, maternity, boudoir, model portfolio, and event coverage. I’ve also spent several years modeling, which has given me the valuable knowledge to both sides of the camera. If desired, I will be glad to help with posing ideas and angles to give you the best looking, unique images.
I am very friendly and sociable, I try to make my clients feel comfortable and have a lot of fun at the shoot. I am truly fortunate to do what I do. I get to be part of a person’s special day or celebration, get to know their family and most of all, capture those precious moments for them! That’s what it’s all about to me, capturing the emotion, character, and surreal beauty in people that will last a lifetime.

As 2020 draws to a close, I want to share with you some of my favorite GEAR and GADGET finds from the past year.
Photographers often hear the quote, “it's not the camera that makes the picture, it is the photographer”. They usually hear it from a person who has tens of thousands of dollars worth of camera gear.
I like to take a slightly more practical approach and that is simply that all the gear in the world won't make you a great photographer, but the right gear can make your task much easier and help elevate the quality of your work. How's that for politically correct? But it's true. At the end of the day if you don't build a solid foundation of photography knowledge — you know that physics stuff, and if you don't make a real effort to be creative — well then all that gear will not really matter.
Let's keep it real — we all like our toys and for me, when I find a toy that makes my job easier or helps me simplify something — that is a big win in my books.
I have links to all of these in the show notes. Full disclosure — a few of the links are affiliate links, so I will make a few pennies if you use the links, but I assure you — I am not being paid to show any of this gear and these are pieces that I actively use in my daily work.

If you don't think that you are very creative and struggle coming up with ideas, I have 9 Ideas To Make YOU More Creative and Your Photographs Unique.
One of the questions that I hear frequently from photographers is: “Where do you come up with your ideas?” That question is usually followed by one of these statements: “I’m just not that creative.” or “I guess I’m not creative.” or my personal favorite, “I just don’t know how to find new ideas”.
If you are a photographer who thinks like this, I have some bad news for you. If you think you aren’t creative — you aren’t creative. There, I said it. And I mean it.

Success for me, has always been working to build the skills to build the confidence that I could pick up a camera at will and create an image that measures up to my imagination.
One of the best ways to determine the path to success is to study the paths and careers that the most successful people have taken.
Everyone wants to be successful. The challenge is that too many people choose the wrong definition of success.

I frequently consult with photographers who are trying to improve their photography or make more money in their business efforts and recently I noticed a trend. A trend where photographers lament that they are struggling to improve their work or make more money, yet for every struggle and problem that they face, they have excuses, often multiple excuses for why they can’t overcome the problem. And THAT is a big problem.
The more I considered this trend, I realized that it’s not really a trend. It’s not a trend because it is a problem that photographers have faced for decades, probably for as long as there have been photographers. Every great photographer has faced this problem and will probably face it again. And that is why I wanted to discuss it with you and try to offer some solutions. Notice I didn’t say easy solutions. They will require work.

I am often asked what I see in my crystal ball for the future of photography. Truth is I don’t have a crystal ball for the future of photography. I mean, who really does. Right? But I have been involved with photography since I was 11 years old and one of the big lessons that I’ve learned is that we can find many of the answers to what the future holds by actually looking to the past history to a large degree repeats itself.
As photographers, we reward manufacturers for making gear or software that makes our photographs better and makes our jobs easier. So part of making our job easier is to make it faster or save us time. So about four years ago on one of my very first TOGCHATS, I was asked about how I thought current cameras and software would evolve my prediction, which I have repeated in numerous talks and demonstrations and events across the country.
Honestly, it kind of freaked out a lot of people, that my prediction was that digital cameras would become video-centric, meaning video first stills second.

I frequently hear photographers lamenting that they just can’t find models or that they don’t know how to find models and I receive messages with those questions several times each week. After I wrote the title, How to find the best models, I realized that the bigger problem is that many photographers don’t actually understand what makes a great model. So here we are.
Before I dig in, please listen closely to what I am about to say — I am going to share my experience, which began working with agency models that my clients hired and then evolved to working with the models to craft their portfolios so that they could get signed by agencies and hired by clients and then evolved to today where I work with models mostly on creative projects. I started working with models in 1984. I have worked with the best and the worst.
I am also going to share some things with you that will not be politically correct in today’s social climate. Please listen closely to those statements. They are not my opinions, they are observations. As you will hear me say — don’t take my word for it — look around you — do some of your own research. Sometimes reality is not ideal, but I assure you that I am a person with a liberal and progressive mindset and my only agenda here is to help you.
With that being said — let’s talk about what makes a great model. I think it will make the discussion easier if we create three categories to begin with — Agency Models, Freelance Models and Acquaintances. Just like photographers, there are many types of models.

I first heard Under-Promise and Over-Deliver from an early mentor way back in my twenties. It is an aphorism. Aphorisms, like clichés are those pithy, often overused observations that contain a general truth, like, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I mean, it makes sense right? Set the expectations low and over deliver on those expectations and your clients will think you are a superstar.
The more I thought about this concept, the more I began to realize its shortcomings. So I did a little research and sure enough, there is a lot of research both psychological and also business and marketing research that shows that while this is a well intended concept — it is ultimately a poor practice that can harm your business.

In this episode I share a really cool, super simple trick that will definitely up your lighting game. And this trick is not just for beginners. In fact, there are times that I still use this trick even after more than 40 years of working with lighting. I call it the five-foot rule, actually, I hate rules, so let’s go with the five-foot guide.
You will hear me break down the step-by-step of this elegant portrait lighting arrangement and how easy it is to set up and work with.
Remember hat photographing people is 80 percent psychology and 20 percent photography, so you need to simplify the photography stuff as much as possible.

Photographers tend to do the shoot, find a few images they like, celebrate, and then file the images away and move on. They rarely take the time to consider the failures. To ask why they don’t like that image? They don’t consider how they could have improved it?
A normal workflow for most photographers, myself included, is to shoot images and then return home and download them to the computer. Then we eagerly cull through the shoot to find the best image or images. Then we process them and either deliver them and post them to social media. When we are done with this, we file the images away, sometimes never to be viewed again. That is a missed opportunity to improve your photography.

The THREE MOST Important things you can do to improve your photography in 2020
Traditionally, this is the time of year where people make New Year's Resolutions… and of course post them for the world to see on Facebook and Instagram as if the world will actually hold you accountable for these self made promises that you will inevitably break within the first 30 days of the new year.
Look, I am not a pessimist - I'm just keeping it real. Researchers have found that about 60 percent of us make New Year's resolutions but only about 8 percent are successful in achieving them. In other words, statistically, the time and effort put into a New Year's resolution is a waste of time.
That being said, I have decided to take a different approach and give you just three things that can have the biggest impact on your photography.

On December 19th, the Founder and CEO of Smugmug - which is the company who now owns Flickr… the Founder and CEO, Don MacAskill penned an open letter to Flickr users on the Flickr Blog.

IN THIS EPISODE OF TOGCHAT THE PHOTOGRAPHY PODCAST WITH JOE EDELMAN
This week, join me for an interview with lighting master and Interfit Creative Pro photographer John Cornicello from Seattle, Washington.
John Cornicello has been involved in the photo industry since starting out as a photo assistant in New York City in 1979. In the early 1980s he had a still life advertising studio where he worked with cameras from 35mm up to 11x14 and with a large variety of lighting systems from Hollywood-style hot lights, to strobes, and now almost entirely digital with LED technology under his tool belt.
Now based in Seattle, John is a home studio based portrait and headshot photographer. He is a regular fixture on CreativeLIVE, both as an instructor and as the lighting technician for other instructors. His passion is around teaching photographic concepts from basic camera functions to lighting theory and practice. For the past three years John has embarked on a personal portrait series called the Chair Project photographing people from all walks of life in an old chair purchased at a garage sale and now with a new "Egg Chair."
John is also the author of an e-book, Anatomy of a Studio Portrait, which is available on Amazon. https://amzn.to/2s3LFu8 (#commissionearned)
