130: What does mentorship in photography look like? How does one find a mentor? What's it like to be a really great mentee?

This conversation illuminates just how diverse and powerful mentorship is, and what it can look like for you.

This is a recording of a bonus event I held about how to craft a mentorship. I invited six pro photographers and photo editors to share the way that our mentorships were structured and do a Q&A session.

You'll hear from:

  • Suzi Eszterhas and Susan McElhinney, Photo Editor of Ranger Rick Magazine
  • Morgan Heim and Jen Guyton
  • Jaymi Heimbuch (that's me!!) and Sabine Meyer, Photography Director for National Audubon Society

Each of us shaped very different mentor-mentee relationships based on what we most needed help with.

There's SO much great information and insight in here that can help you shape your own mentorships.

128: Whether conservation photography is a hobby, a side-gig or you're a full-time pro, you need to know how to document income and expenses for tax season.

(Even if this work is a "hobby" for you, the IRS might not see it that way and you need to have your ducks in a row come tax time. )

It's my mission to help you feel organized and prepared in ALL aspects of this field - including the biz side - so today I'm excited to talk with Tiffany Bastian from Bastian Accounting for Photographers!

Tiffany dives into what we need to know to prepare our businesses for tax season, and other aspects of running a successful conservation photography business, including:

  • Why a separate bank account is the BEST thing you can have (even if photography is a hobby)
  • Tips to set yourself up for a stress-free tax time
  • The benefits of using accounting software like Quickbooks
  • Her membership that teaches you how to build the structure of your photography business
  • and more

Tiffany is passionate about helping photographers reach their dreams and becoming more proactive instead of reactive by making finance management accessible and not anxiety-driven.

As she puts it, "If you can show people how to do this stuff and that it's not hard, it doesn't become so anxiety-driven."

With energy and infectious enthusiasm, Tiffany opens up the dialogue on how we can make finance-related matters less overwhelming, so that workloads become more streamlined and proactive in the long run.

125: A big challenge nature photographers face is feeling overwhelmed by the thought of photographing people.

It's intimidating to capture a moment with someone if you don't have much experience in portrait photography or shooting for a story.

Yet, people are often a crucial element of effective, compelling conservation photo stories. After all, many conservation stories are about volunteers, activists, scientists, community members...

Luckily, there's an easy 1-hour exercise that helps to build confidence and overcome this fear so you can create beautiful stories with your images.

Simply photograph someone you already know doing something. That's it!

I know it sounds too easy, but trust me when I tell you that this exercise will work wonders for you.

In this episode I take you behind the scenes of a short photo shoot of my partner, Nick, doing a craft.

I walk you through:

  • why it's important to do zero-pressure photo shoots to build your creative muscles
  • the difference between photo stories and photo essays
  • exactly what I was thinking as I was photographing so I could make interesting, diverse images
  • what I was looking for as I composed images
  • working with what you have when you're a "fly on the wall" photographer
  • how many images I took in one hour (!!!)
  • how I edited a big set of images down to only the best 26

This episode is filled with insights to use next time you pick up the camera -- and I hope it's to do this very exercise! - that'll help you break through barriers you might be feeling about photographing people.

123: You spend a lot of time and effort creating beautifully crafted photo stories about conservation issues that are REALLY important.

So it's no wonder you want to make sure those stories get in front of as many eyes as possible.

Understanding how to repurpose your photo stories, or come up with fresh ways to get that out into the world in front of different audiences, will help you accomplish MORE impact with LESS work.

You'll Learn:
- why it's important to tell a story over and over (but differently each time!)
- why considering different audiences matters to conservation
- how to think about story angles and framing
- and we break down a case study from one of my Conservation Photography 101 students so you can see allllll these steps in action!

Make the most of EVERY story you photograph! This episode shows you how.

112: Narrowing down a portfolio of images to ONLY your best shots is tough! You might spend hours agonizing over two shots that, well, look pretty much the same.

Choosing between your favorites, or feeling confident you're picking the best and only the best (because what if someone else likes this other image better???), or feeling overwhelmed with all the images you're deciding among that you can't see the forest for the trees ... the struggle is real.

Here are two different approaches to make the process much, much easier.

One option removes images by focusing specifically on similars.

The other option - brought to you courtesy of one of my Conservation Photography 101 students - adds images by making "mini portfolios" of the best options, one small handful at a time.

Pick which one works best for you and start flying through the portfolio editing process with confidence - and kick decision fatigue to the curb!

I also mention my 5-Step portfolio editing process. You can get the worksheet and walkthrough at JaymiH.com/3

107: In conservation photography, the imagery itself is just one part of the work that we really do.

It's step one. Step two is putting that imagery to work for the conservation causes that we care about.

I have such a thing for creative ways of visual storytelling that draw people in and allow them to have an immersive, amazing experience. It helps go beyond being told a conservation message and instead experiencing why that conservation message is important and internalizing it.

This is something conservation visual storyteller Lianna Nixon has become an expert at.

As a photographer, filmmaker, and educator, Lianna explores using all kinds of different storytelling and technology tools to build experiences around climate change.

She brings together activism, identity development, learning outcomes, and more to build projects that will, frankly, kind of blow your mind.

In this interview, Leanna talks about:

  • her recent creative projects, including being part of the MOSAiC expedition
  • important ways of thinking about how we approach the projects and also the people that we work with
  • thinking about your subjects as collaborators in the storytelling process
  • ethically telling the stories of communities that aren't your own

You're sure to walk away with a wealth of creative inspiration for your next visual story project.

105: Of the many people who I deeply admire in the conservation photography realm, Clay Bolt ranks WAY up there.

He is someone who absolutely walks the talk of a conservation photographer, and knows that the image is just the first step in having a true impact for wildlife and wilderness.

He's also never afraid to push himself into new creative realms, and that includes wading into the wide world of writing.

Right now, Clay has several book projects on the front burner that take him into not only deeper into new areas of photography, but also into new areas as a writer.

Today we talk about what he's creating, how he's digging into the book-making process, and the impact he hopes to make with these books.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to try your hand at writing – even if you've never done it before – so that you can make a bigger impact as a visual storyteller, this is the episode for you.

104: Collaborations can be incredibly fulfilling experiences.

When you find an organization, a nonprofit, a community group, or a foundation that can use the images you create to expand their impact and create positive change — whether that is fundraising, awareness campaigns, or creating action around initiatives — you know your work is having a direct effect on causes you care about.

Collaborations are also amazing opportunities to learn and grow when you're just getting started in conservation photography, and moving from stand-alone shots to visual storytelling.

They can open up access to interesting stories, build your portfolio, lead to connections for networking, and even provide paid creative work… all while building friendships that last.

But you may be thinking, “Sounds great, Jaymi, but how do I actually connect with an organization to get started?”

So that's what this episode is all about. I walk you through:

  • the straightforward steps for searching out organizations local to you
  • how to figure out which orgs you actually want to reach out to
  • and how to have the best first meeting possible so you start off with a foundation of trust

103: One of the most fun and honestly, most fulfilling parts of work as a conservation photographer is collaborations with organizations you're passionate about.

When you team up with a nonprofit, a researcher, or a community group that you really connect with, magic happens.

The relationships you build with the people you're working with can lead to some of the most profound, fun, energizing experiences inside of your photography.

It's where you can grow.

It's where you can experiment.

It's where you can play and create…

… and bring in tons of important funding for that collaborator.

But… How do you get that?

How do you find an ideal collaboration, what do you look for, and what is the experience like?

Well, to dive into this topic, I talked with a dynamic duo that has one of the most amazing collaborative relationships I've seen between conservation photographers and conservation organizations.

Suzi Eszterhas is a conservation photographer with loads of experience in fundraising for organizations using her photography.

Her collaborative partner, Dr. Rebecca Cliff of the Sloth Conservation Foundation is equally creative, energetic, and willing to experiment with ideas.

Together they've raised over $100,000 for sloth conservation.

In this interview, they talk about:
- how they got started
- advice for conservation photographers looking to find collaborative partners
- strategies they've used for fundraising
- and we definitely dive into the ups and downs of these strategies!

102: Christy Frank is a wildlife conservation photographer and now a filmmaker based in Ohio who witnessed a truly extraordinary event... almost without realizing it.

A morning outing evolved into a summer of long days filming on the shores of powerful short film documenting the return of an endangered species to to the shores of Lake Erie.

In May 2021, a pair of piping plovers - lovingly named Nish and Nellie - nested for the first time in the area in over 80 years. The event is historic, and brought together over 100 volunteers to protect them on the busy beach they chose as a nesting site. The dramas never ceased with the family of fierce little feather-balls, and the people who dedicated their time in hopes to see the family thrive and bring the species back to the area.

Christy has brought the tale to life in a powerful short film title Ploverville. She joins us to talk about:

  • What it's like being a still photographer jumping into filmmaking
  • How she pulled months' worth of footage into a 20-minute film
  • Her conservation goals for the project
  • How she's tracking the impact of the film
  • Her hopes for piping plovers and what their presence means for other species in the area

098: Just 2 years after picking up a camera, Anne Readel is getting her local conservation photo stories into national publications like New York Times, Audubon, Better Homes & Gardens, Sierra and more.

Anne is a student in Conservation Photography 101 who took my mantra of finding local stories seriously.

So seriously, in fact, that she didn't even leave her apartment complex to get her first photo story ever published by a national magazine.

Wait, whaaaa?

So is she a super-experienced photographer?

Nope.

Anne picked up a camera for the first time in 2019.

After a couple years of learning the ropes, she knew she wanted to do more with her new-found passion than just snap shots to post on Instagram.

(where they wither away as the algorithm is like, ‘nah. no views for you').

She wanted to tell photo stories that
🌟
Make people think.
🌟 Get inspired.
🌟 Have conversations.
🌟 Act.

So, she made a move I so very deeply admire.

She looked for a fast-track option to gain the know-how and she invested in herself.

Anne enrolled in the Conservation Photography 101 course in June 2021 and by November, she had her first photo story published in Audubon Magazine.

In March, she had a story published in the New York Times.

In April, it was Better Homes & Gardens and Sierra Club.

Know what her stories so far all have in common?

They're 100% local conservation stories.

They're things happening in Anne's own state, town… heck – she didn't even have to leave her apartment complex for her Audubon story!

In this joyful, inspiring interview with Anne, we talk about:

The mindset she used to pitch dream publications, even without a photography track record

How she saw an opportunity to grow momentum for a local conservation movement and ran with it

Why “no” isn't a bad thing for a pitch

✅ What she learned from “failures” during the pitching process

✅ Figuring out the goal for your story early, and why it matters

✅ And so much more!

96: Often (and I do this all the time) we get wrapped up in the idea that conservation is about wildlife and protecting wilderness. It's about saving critters from the brink of extinction.

That's not what it's all about though.

Conservation is actually so many things. It is social justice, economic equality, access to resources. It is rooted in race, class, culture, and so much more.

Ultimately conservation is about paving a path toward sustainability on all levels, and using your photography to bring attention to that path.

That makes our job as conservation photographers that much easier, because it means we can bring elements of our conservation values and messaging into every niche of photographic work.

Rebeca Stumpf is a perfect example of a photographer who has found a way to live out her conservation values in commercial and editorial work.

Dive into this episode to hear how Rebecca has honed her style and what she's known for to be able to land commercial work that aligns with her values, and provides opportunity to slip conservation values into mainstream conversations.

095: Gerrit Vyn's photography has been inspiring conservation action across the globe for many years.

Starting out his career as a natural history photographer, Vyn's current position as a Producer with Cornell Lab of Ornithology (hello, dream job!) has him traveling across the continent and the globe documenting disappearing bird species.

It's not an easy job, physically or emotionally. But as a conservation photographer, this particular focus on birds serves conservation on several levels.

Vyn says, "My work often focuses on birds because they are such powerful and visible indicators of environmental health and change. Connecting people with birds is often a first step in opening people’s eyes to the natural world around them – and to the unprecedented environmental crises now unfolding."

His work has been featured in National Geographic, Audubon, Living Bird, BBC Wildlife, GEO, Natural History, National Wildlife and The New York Times.

But best of all, his images have been used by conservation organizations large and small to help bring measurable impact for species.

In this episode, Vyn shares:

  • What it means to make conservation images that can be put to meaningful use
  • The benefits of photo blinds and how to use them
  • The emotional impact of working in this field, and how he keeps moving forward
  • Unforgettable experiences in the field, including being the firsts person to film spoonbill sandpiper chicks
  • And much, much more

094: "Are All Human Beings Worthy Of Empathy?" That was the subject line of an email that landed in my inbox one morning.

It wasn't just curiosity that made me open the email.

I was also looking to see if the sender was somehow giving me permission to give up.

Because empathy is hard work. Maintaining empathy especially for someone you whole-heartedly disagree with on a conservation issue (or perhaps even view as the enemy) takes commitment, courage and a whole lot of confidence in where you stand on the issue.

As conservation-focused photographers and filmmakers, we often forget that while creating images is indeed hard work, making the positive impact we dream of with those images is the hardest work of all.

The person providing the answer to that provoking question is Eric Bailey, a brain science and communication expert, bestselling author of The Cure for Stupidity: Using Brain Science to Explain Irrational Behavior and President of Bailey Strategic Innovation Group, one of the fastest-growing human communication consulting firms in the United States.

In this interview, Eric provides a whole lot of insight into what empathy actually is and one of the most empowering lessons I've ever had on what it means to provide empathy to another person.

088: Of all the books that fill my book shelves, and there are many, there is one particular imprint that really stands out that is Braided River. That's because Braided River creates books that are all based in conservation.

Whether it's wildlife conservation or wild spaces conservation, everything that they put out is not only a beautiful visual story, but has a really strong message of conservation. Braided River doesn't just stop when the book is published. The book is the start of what will also be a campaign that includes gallery exhibits, traveling exhibits, speaking events, all kinds of campaigns that will hopefully create necessary change, policy change or behavior change around the conservation issue that the book discusses.

Helen Cherullo founded Braided River, the imprint of Mountaineers, while she was the publisher of Mountaineers. She has 20 long years of experience there, and now she has pivoted to give a 100% of her energy as the Executive Director of Braided River.

She knows what she is doing when it comes to creating books that have conservation impact. She is full of knowledge and insights, and it is such a joy to get to understand what the book publishing journey looks like, not only from the perspective of building a book, but also of building a book that becomes the springboard of something bigger.

It's a amazing conversation, and if you have any interest at all in creating a book around a conservation visual storytelling project that you're working on, then this is the episode for you.

and then what happens?

What happens to that conservation film after you've premiered it?

Well, that is what Gunjan Menon thinks about all the time.

Menon is an independent wildlife filmmaker based in India, and she specializes in creating mixed-genre conservation-focused films. And what happens after those films are made is where Gunjan loves to focus her energy.

Menon and her husband launched an organization called Beyond Premieres, which connects folks working in conservation efforts on the ground with conservation-focused filmmakers. Beyond Premieres also helps with things like outreach and education, developing capacity building through filmmaking, and there's even a legal team to help assist with policy level changes

Menon talks us today to talk about her own journey from being a child actor in a big city to becoming a wildlife filmmaker, some of the projects that she's worked on that have really changed her and helped guide her work, and what it means for success to have role models in this field.

077: How do you jump into the big (often nerve-wracking) realm of pitching for the first time?

Well, Carla accomplished it with a canon-ball dive.

Carla was with us in episode 31, where she talked about finding the courage to begin her first conservation photography project.

Since completing that project, Carla has done an exceptional job of getting that story out into the world, from bioGraphic to the New York Times.

For the first time, she's navigated the pitching process and all the ups and downs and failures and false starts that come with that.

So she's back to talk about her big lessons learned, what she did right, what she did wrong, what she wouldn't change for the world, and how she's built up a successful path for herself andfor a story

076: If you're interested in the filmmaking side of conservation visual storytelling, then you likely already know about Jackson Wild.

But if this is a new name to you, well you'll know all about them by the end of this episode.

Jackson Wild is probably best known for its annual summit, where people from all over the world gather to watch amazing environmental and nature films, to network, and to collaborate.

Not only does this organization host an outstanding annual event, but it also hosts the Jackson Wild Media Lab, an amazing opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to learn all about science communication and filmmaking.

On top of all this, Jackson Wild has created yet another extraordinary thing: the Jackson Wild Collective.

I think of it as the LinkedIn of conservation filmmakers, scientists and composers and pretty much anyone interested in taking part in the filmmaking side of conservation visual storytelling.

It's been in beta mode for months, but has finally launched this May to the public. So I asked Melanie Judd, who's in charge of partnerships and engagement at Jackson Wild, to come on to the podcast and tell us all about the Jackson Wild Collective.

Enjoy this inside scoop on everything this new platform has to offer.

074: Today we're talking with Suzi Eszterhas, who is jury chair of BigPicture, and Rhonda Rubinstein, whois the Creative Director at California Academy of Sciences, the entity that hosts the competition. And both Suzi and Rhonda are co-founders of BigPicture.

We talk about why BigPicture puts so much emphasis on increasing the representation of women inside of this wildlife photography competition, why it matters, and what strategies are they employing in order to encourage women to enter.

It's a big sticky topic. You may agree with some things, you may disagree with some things, but it is something that we need to have a conversation about. So I invite you to come along on this conversation, and it might just open up new ideas about the entire concept of wildlife photography competitions as a whole.

072: When your job is not a typical nine-to-five with a paycheck every two weeks, it can be really hard for a spouse or a partner to understand what you're doing as real work. It can be hard for YOU to see what you do as real work.

And that's when communication becomes critical.

My own partner, Nick, was with me when I made the shift from someone with a full-time salaried job into being a business owner. He's been with me as I worked on assignment photography. As I created workshops and launched them to teach other people. As I created my local photography tour company.

Oh he's seen those ups and downs! And while we aren't perfect, and we aren't necessarily the typical couple, we have made it work well.

So I cajoled Nick into coming onto the podcast to talk about what it's like to be the partner of a full-time photographer, how we've navigated the ups and the downs, and strategies that can help you bring your partner onboard with your profession of choice, so that you both can grow.

I asked Kika Tuff to come back onto the podcast and talk about what it means to build a brand kit for a project. What goes into it? What does the process look like? What are some of the things that we need to think about or consider?

She walks us through building a brand kit and the things that we think about when it comes to a project. And she also dives in a little bit about how you know when a project is ready to be its own entity and to have its own brand that stands apart from your brand as a conservation visual storyteller.

Um… HOW?!?

In this wide-ranging interview, Ryan talks about his path toward visual storytelling, then conservation.

He talks about powerlifting, paragliding and project planning.

He talks about being Black in a mostly white field, and the difficulty of finding mentors.

Told you it is wide-ranging. And oh, so very good.

Well, luckily, she is indeed finding her way back to her creative self, and the way that she is coming through this is incredible. Not only is her story amazing to listen to, but she's also developed a strategy and a set of tools that can guide any one of us who also stumbles, who also has all of that negative self-talk around creativity going on in our heads.

059: Raise your hand if you have recently put your creative work on the back burner in favor of handling all the other things that need to get done during the day.

Yeah, I think we all should have our hands raised.

It is a common thing for photographers to struggle with prioritizing creative endeavors and to actually stick to the schedule.

Trust me, you are not alone. I've been right there with you.

It's a daily struggle, but because I am a total productivity and systems nerd I've experimented with a bunch of different strategies for making sure that creative time gets its fair share of calendar space and that I make progress on crafting the images, the stories, the content that I want to share with the world

Of those experiments, the strategy I'm sharing with you today has stood out as a clear winner. And I'm walking you through how you can implement it and make sure you always have time for creativity.

You'll Learn

  • How to use this tool on a weekly (or even daily!) basis
  • The mindset hack that helps you gain ground on projects
  • The timer trick that changes everything
  • Challenges you're likely to face when implementing this tool (and how to overcome them)

056: Ever had your images used without permission? Is copyright registration all that important? Is your website legalese up to snuff?

As you become more serious about your work, you start to think about things like copyright registration, how important it is, and when you should care about it.

That’s why it is such an honor to have Erick Howard join us to talk about this and share his knowledge with you. Erick is a partner at the San Francisco-based law firm, Shartsis Friese, and today we discuss several of the common issues that he's coached me through over the years.

He also digs into when you do and don’t need a lawyer for something, and what to look for should you decide to consult with one. This is one episode you definitely don't want to skip!

Doors open soon for Conservation Photography 101: Master how to create, shoot and pitch a powerful photo story. Hop on the waitlist here. # 054: Have your conservation photography stories been rejected (or ignored) by editors time and time again, but you have no idea where you are going wrong?

Plenty of pitfalls can come up in the process of pitching your conservation photography story to publications. Being aware of them is the difference between getting a yes from an editor… or being completely ignored.

I’ve spent years working as an editor, which involved having to sift through tons of pitches. So I have a fairly good idea of what the most frequent mistakes are. And, if you’ve ever listened to other editors, they will point out the same ones that I will walk you through today.

Fortunately, you can avoid these pitfalls altogether by taking the right steps early on in the story creation process so that, once you get to the pitching part, it's smooth sailing.

You'll Learn

  • The difference between a story and a topic, and why this matters.
  • Critical questions you need to ask to formulate a story.
  • What editors look for when considering a pitch.
  • How a clearly defined story benefits you, the photographer, and the editor.
  • Why it is imperative to tailor your pitch to the publication.
  • The importance of doing your research about the publication beforehand.
  • How choosing the right publication can increase the impact of your story.

053: Let’s suppose you have a conservation photography project in mind and know exactly what you want to produce. You've done the legwork to figure out the grants you want to go for…

…but you get stuck when you discover that the granting entity is only going to hand the money over to a nonprofit entity.

Well, now you need a fiscal sponsor.

So, what is fiscal sponsorship and why do you need to know about it? And even more importantly, how do you find the just-right organization to partner up with.

When I started Urban Coyote Initiative, I partnered up with an organization called WILD Foundation. Not only was WILD a home for the project when it was up and running, but is now a fiscal sponsor and a collaborative partner for Her Wild Vision initiative.

WILD Foundation has thus played an important role in my conservation photography work, as well as in the work of many others, including big names such as Cristina Mittermeier and James Balog. It is safe to say that WILD Foundation knows exactly what it is doing when it comes to partnering up with conservation visual storytellers!

That’s why I'm honored to have Vance Martin, the president of WILD Foundation, join us for this episode to share what fiscal sponsorship is, what it means to collaborate with a nonprofit partner, and what he has learned over the years about the requirements for a successful collaboration.

You'll Learn

  • What is has been like for Vance to have worked for WILD Foundation since 1984.
  • Why conservation photography fits so well into WILD Foundation’s mission.
  • What it takes to set up a collaboration agreement between a photographer/filmmaker and WILD.
  • How conservation organizations like WILD help people to get funding for their initiatives.
  • The responsibilities of the fiscal sponsor and how they protect the interests of all parties.
  • Why WILD Foundation does these collaborative agreements and what they look for in projects.
  • A photographer’s responsibilities in their relationships with a fiscal sponsor.
  • Advice for how visual conservation storytellers can go about looking for a fiscal sponsor.

052: Today’s episode is special since it is Part 3 of a multi-part series that takes you behind the scenes of a long-term conservation photography project that I’m working on, called Watershed Sentinels.

What often happens when we think of this kind of project (as opposed to a story) is that it can seem overwhelming, especially if you are only getting started.

You might wonder what a long-term project is, how it is managed, and what the dos and don’ts are.

Fortunately, there is no one right way of doing such a project. And to show you the ups and downs, the messy bits and the savvy strategies that are all part of a personalized project, I’m taking you along on my own journey, to give you a sense of what it all entails.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to implement some of these things in your own projects and avoid some of the mistakes I’ve made.

In Part 2, I left you with a cliffhanger, so in this episode, I share what decisions and changes I’ve made in my photography business and why these are pivotal for moving forward successfully with this photography project.

You'll Learn

  • Why Urban Coyote Initiative needed to be fully back-burnered
  • What this decision meant for the project’s website, social media, and other accounts
  • What letting go of certain things to clear out our headspace for something else can mean for creativity
  • The process of doing away with my in-person photo tour company when COVID hit.
  • The importance of taking a hard look at the things you are emotionally invested in but might not be practical
  • Why you have to let go of all the should's around your project and claim a should-free space
  • The piece of equipment I recently purchased especially for Watershed Sentinels

043: Question: How do you get incredible images of elusive animals?

Answer: Wildlife tracking skills!

At least that’s how David Moskowitz does it. A talented conservation photographer and a master tracker, David used his skills to track and photograph the highly endangered Mountain Caribou in the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, and published a beautifully photographed book called Caribou Rainforest.

So if you’re a photographer that wants to go beyond snapshots and get an insider look at the lives of the species that you want to document, are you ready to make wildlife tracking the next thing on your must-learn to-do list?

You should. Or at least you should after this episode of Impact, where we chat with David about tracking skills and how they've played into his conservation photography work. And yes, we will definitely dive in more into that amazing species, the Mountain Caribou.

041: You know those moments where you're like, “You know, this thing would be so helpful. It should exist,” and then you go make it exist? Well, that happened.

Three weeks ago, Morgan Heim and I had a conversation about the hurdles for women in conservation photography, and how it would be awesome to create something that takes away some of those barriers. And that’s what we did.

Enter Her Wild Vision Initiative, a searchable directory of women-identified conservation photographers and filmmakers that's going to make big waves.

In this episode, Morgan and I sit down and chat about Her Wild Vision Initiative. Why we’ve created it, challenges that we’ve faced as women in photography, and not to mention the amazing perks and collaborations we have inside the project.

It’s a jam-packed episode full of exciting reveals.

You'll Learn

  • What Her Wild Vision Initiative is all about and how it works
  • The whirlwind story of how it came to be
  • All the awesome perks Her Wild Vision has for conservation photographers
  • How you can apply (it’s free!) and how you can support the project

It is a very common question, and for good reason.

Making a career in conservation photography can feel daunting. There's no road map. There's no right way to do it. You really have to navigate and figure out how in the world you create a successful career as a conservation photographer.

But the thing is, it's possible - and my guest today proves it.

Lauren Owens Lambert is a professional conservation photographer with an impressive career trajectory. From landing assignments with big outlets from the Nature Conservancy to Audubon magazine, and being accepted to the Emerging League with the International League of Conservation Photographers, it’s been phenomenal to watch her career progress.

Ever read or watch something that is so clearly pushing a one-sided argument, trying so hard to win your support but not presenting alternatives or differing perspectives?

Probably left a bad taste in your mouth, right?

That one-sided push is not how to be persuasive.

Winning a viewers' trust is key, and that means telling stories that reveal the whole picture.

But, this isn’t as straight-forward as you think.

See, when you're working on documenting a conservation issue, it can be really easy to become so wrapped up in it that you actually become a little myopic.

You can get so close to the topic that you perhaps don't see what it is that you're leaving out or you're so emotionally connected to the topic that you find it hard to document opposing views.

In this episode, we dive into the idea that conservation photographers are bridges, connectors, and how you can use this concept to to put your own opinions aside.

This way, you can see that whole story and become a far more persuasive conservation photographer because of it.

You'll Learn

  • What it really means to be a connector
  • The importance of building bridges through photographs
  • Why we’re easily persuaded by some things, and not others
  • How to frame your thinking and tell persuasive stories

His dogged determination to get never-before-seen images is shedding light on this fascinating corner of the world.

If you’re looking to get inspired to pick up the camera, you will definitely want to listen to this episode. Mac talks about his process in diving deep into natural history of the Everglades, the gripping stories behind his jaw-dropping images, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

036: Conservation photographers tend to come from a background of wildlife or landscape photography. People photography is often either uncharted or uncomfortable territory. We feel awkward or intrusive holding a camera in front of someone, and that discomfort makes it hard to capture those decisive and emotional moments.

Yet... every quality photo story NEEDS a human element.

Pictures of people are what get viewers to pause, to look deeper, to connect, to ask questions that help them understand a conservation issue even more, and maybe even act on it.

So if you’re looking to push past your discomfort and start photographing powerful people portraits, then this episode is for you. I will walk you through a building blocks style process that is going to help you to think more about how to photograph people, and about the kinds of images that will make a conservation story effective in creating change.

You'll Learn

  • A step by step process to help you become more comfortable and skilled with photographing people
  • The two core skillsets you need to capture epic portraits
  • How restrictions (like COVID-19) can boost your skills

034: Conservation photographers often work with clients to produce beautiful portfolios of images for marketing efforts, or professionally crafted films that explore the work of scientist, nonprofits, or businesses. It is a fairly straightforward gig. Sometimes, though, going the straightforward route means leaving a lot of important possibilities on the table.

You can provide ohhh so much more as a creative – both in what products you actually deliver and in how those products maximize the investment your clients have made in your creative talents.

In this episode, we’re digging into the notion of thinking “laterally” and building full packages for clients. Join Kika Tuff, founder of Impact Media Lab, who understands what it means to think laterally when working with clients, to take the time to truly understand what your client actually needs not just what they say they need, and then to design something that helps your client accomplish bigger things.

We're not simply talking about sales strategy or products that you offer. We’re talking about HOW to think bigger in using your creativity to provide things to your clients that help them do bigger things. It's a win-win situation all the way, and Kika, who is a master at thinking laterally, is going to dig into so much detail.

This episode is jam-packed with information, so I highly encourage you to pull out a notebook and take notes as you listen. If you are currently working in conservation photography as a side hustle, or you want to do more as a volunteer with organizations, or if you want to build up your photography business even more there's so much in this episode for you!

You'll Learn

  • What thinking laterally means
  • Why looking at the bigger picture is so important for savvy strategy
  • Tips for interviewing clients to figure out what they really want
  • Ideas for building packages that your clients will love
  • Inspiration for planning, pricing and more

033: As you advance as a photographer, one of the big jumps that completely transforms the quality of your images is learning to move away from shooting reactively, to shooting proactively.

Proactive shooting changes everything about your photography, from your style to the impact of individual images.

See, you might be an extraordinarily talented photographer. But are you crafting stories within each frame?

If your goal is to move past portraits, past stellar-but-standalone shots, then you have to move past shooting whatever appears out in front of you and instead shoot with intention.

You have to move from shooting reactively to shooting proactively. And I'm going to walk you through how.

You'll Learn

  • What reactive shooting is and how it limits you
  • What proactive shooting is and how it steps up the quality and content of your images
  • Two sets of questions that are key to shooting proactively (Hint: the first set gets you thinking about the why and what, and the second set gets you thinking about the how, when and where)

032: Working in photography - no matter if you're a hobbyist or a pro - means juggling a whole lot of things.

If you aren’t doing this full time, then you’re juggling your full-time life and your passion work.

If you are doing this full time, then you’re probably juggling half a dozen projects (some paying, some not) plus the business side of things.

And all of us have to balance all of this with a functional personal life.

It gets messy.

But there are great tools out there that help to keep things organized, reduce how much time you spend on tasks, and save sanity.

I’m outlining three of these that are essential to my business and that I’m confident will go a long way in helping you as well.

031: What stops you from starting something new?

Is it fear, is it self-consciousness, is it uncertainty about the unknown, is it overwhelm?

There are a lot of things that might hold you back from doing something amazing – but none of those things stand a chance against courage, passion and resolve. Your passion for what it is you deeply want to accomplish through your work overrides your fear of doing that work. It overrides your fear of doing something new. It overrides your fear of judgment. It overrides your fear of unpredictability or uncertainty.

Carla Rhodes discovered this recently when she launched into her very first conservation photography project. The decision changed her life forever.

In this episode, we’re talking with Carla about how her very first conservation photography project took shape, the types of things that she was thinking as she planned it and headed out into the field, and some of the big lessons that she learned as well.

Whether you're brand new to the field or have been working as a conservation photographer for awhile, you're going to find loads of inspiration, encouragement and joy in this interview.

029: It is instinctual to want to protect yourself from the tough emotions that come with this work. Trust me, I know.

In this episode we take a look at the ways vulnerability actually sets you up for incredible levels of strength in your storytelling skills – both as a creative thinker behind the camera, and as an effective conservation advocate as you craft visuals that lead audiences toward solutions.

025: Ok, ok… I know that this seems dull at first glance. After all, budgets are not typically the part of the creative process that gets you leaping out of bed in the morning and running out the door to go shoot.

But, it is the part of the creative process that can mean being able to shoot at all.

When it comes to photography projects, budgets are essential – and not just for funding your work. They also allow you to see your project clearly, uncover tasks you'll need to do to hit your goal, and even allow you to talk about your project more eloquently with potential funders.

Kind of magical, right? Most definitely.

022: Did you know that you have the power to shape how a city is designed? It's true! And you can be part of designing a city that supports people and wildlife; both the bustle of human culture and the busy interconnected web of a healthy ecosystem. And you can accomplish this through photography.

We can be catalysts for critical conservation efforts without ever leaving the concrete canopy of an urban jungle. Indeed, this rough and rugged habitat can be one of the most important places to focus your conservation efforts, especially if you are a nature photographer who is aspiring to be a wildlife conservation photographer.

In this episode I'm outlining five first steps to take when you're starting an urban conservation photography project.

But first we're going to dive into why this niche of conservation photography shouldn't be overlooked in importance, and we're going to look at some amazing, inspiring work that well known photographers have done in urban areas.

You'll Learn

  • Examples of powerful conservation photography from cities across North America
  • 5 first steps to take when you're starting an urban conservation photography project including:
      1. Get to know your city
      1. Open yourself up to pursuing stories that are different from what you've normally been photographing
      1. Decide what kind of story you want to tell
      1. Decide very carefully who you are collaborating with
      1. Consider how you'll put your superpower of universal language to work

021 As conservation visual storytellers, we know that there is power in really amazing visuals. And we often believe that it is what we do behind the camera that really matters. Unfortunately, this is a completely false belief.

It is true that we need to have robust skill sets as visual storytellers, and that we need to create these really compelling images in order to advance a conservation issue toward a goal.

But that is not where the heavy lifting happens. It actually happens somewhere else.

So while your skill as a photographer is critical, of course, there's another skill set that we have to have, and that is what I'm diving into in this episode.

I'm going to tell you about what I call the three A's. When you have the three A's combined with your skills as a visual storyteller, that is when magic happens.

You'll Learn

  • Action: Your big conservation goal and what you need people to actually do to reach it
  • Audience: Identifying who it truly is that you need to take action
  • Artifact: What you need to create in order to reach your true target audience and get them to take action
  • How to put the 3 As together to make the best possible impact with your photography

020: Steven David Johnson is a professor of Visual and Communication Arts at Eastern Mennonite University University. At the time of this recording, he's on sabbatical. And what he's choosing to do with his time is absolutely blowing the minds of fellow conservation photographers.

Steve is working on a project called Vernal Pools of Appalachia, and through this project he is perfecting a masterful blend of art and science – the kind of elegant yet fascinating photos that are what all conservation photographers dream of creating.

From salamander egg clutches that look like galaxies floating through space, to frogs that look like Rembrandt paintings. And yet, even though there is this artistic, painterly quality, it's still very much a really natural history photo that draws us in as interested people learning more about the species that are inside of these pools. It is amazing there's so much going on here that I had to get Steve under the podcast and ask, How are you doing this? And not only how are you doing this, but why.

In this episode, Steve talks about where he finds his inspiration, how he approaches his work in the vernal pools, and what it means to him as a conservation photographer to be focused on a project about the tiny, fragile things living in these minute ecosystems.

018: Peter Mather is a brilliant and highly experienced conservation photographer. So when he put the call out to fellow photographers asking them to lend their skills to a cause, ears perked up.

Mather is is a leading voice in the fight to protect the Caribou calving grounds of Alaska's oil rich Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Recognizing that this is not just a conservation issue but a human rights issue, Mather lead a collaboration of photographers, filmmakers and writers to document the place, its people, and the wild life in an effort to bring attention to the urgent issue.

In this episode, Mather fills us in on the lessons he learned from the experience, both about the power of bringing conservation photographers together in a concerted effort but also what it personally took to be able to pull off such a collaboration.

If you're interested in bringing together other photographers or other creatives into a concerted effort for a conservation cause, you definitely want to listen to this interview. Mather is completely honest about what it really took - the ups and the downs, the limitations and tribulations it put on him as the lead as well as the amazing successes the teams pulled off.

Bonus: It’s been about four weeks since things really got serious with COVID-19 in the US. There's been a lot of adjustments to make as living situations and financial situations have shifted in unexpected ways. For most of us, our work in the field as local photographers, assignment photographers, or instructors has been put on hold.

However, that doesn't mean everything has to be put on hold.

In fact, there's a lot each of us can work on right now to come out of this crisis stronger than ever.

This period of time will test our mindsets. It will require us to recognize limiting beliefs and flip them into solutions. It will require us to see the opportunity in every hardship.

And that’s what I’m digging into within this episode. We're covering six things to work on right now -- whether you are a hobbyist or a pro -- that will help you keep motivated, keep moving, and build up your photography work.

017: When is a flawed photo a keeper?

This is a question asked while evaluating every single frame before hitting the delete button. It’s built into the workflow; what stays, what goes, and why. What merits being flagged as a winner in spite of, or because of flaws and how do you recognize it?

We dive into the details of measuring the value of your images - the content vs the technical quality.

016: In Part One, Episode 15, we talked all about a Scope of Work and how it is basically your best buddy in maintaining a sanity and boosting your creativity during a conservation photography project. With that Scope of Work, you set your goals and your expectations and your time frames for your project.

Then, with that clarity in hand, it's time to really break things down.

In this episode, we're going to talk about how to craft your ultimate to do list. But don't get me wrong. This is not some sort of checklist, or even a schedule. It is way, way more than that. But first, grab the free template so you can draft your work breakdown and take notes as you listen.

015: There are two tools that I use of the start of every project large or small, whether I'm working on a single short photo assignment or a multiyear photography project. As a freelancer with dozens of irons in the fire, I consider them absolutely vital for staying sane. The two tools are a scope of work and a work break down.

This episode is Part One of a two-part series that walks you through how to utilize these in your own photography work.

I know it might sound a little bit dry, but by the end of this episode you are going to be all about creating scope of works for your projects. Why? Because you'll see how a scope of work gives you clarity, keeps you motivated, and ultimately helps you be a smarter, more creative, and more effective conservation photographer.

And you don't have to start from scratch! I'm handing you the same exact template I use at the beginning of any project, so that you can download it and get focused on your own project starting right now.

014: A day rate is what you charge to do a day's worth of work out in the field as a photographer. If you are getting started, you might have not even the vaguest idea what to charge. And if you're a pro, you might feel pressure to charge whatever it is that your peers or colleagues are charging in order to be competitive or in that same ballpark. Or you might feel like you have to accept whatever dairy is offered by your client in order to ensure that you land that assignment.

But the thing is, your day rate is a number that has to be founded in hard and fast facts if you want to run a profitable business. Your just-right day rate is a number you can calculate, then calibrate, once you understand your business needs, goals and industry expectations. In this episode, I walk you through what goes into calculating a day rate for a profitable conservation photography business.

And I have a very, very powerful tool for you to use to arrive at this all-important number.

013: Images with soul are the images that change the world. It’s something that you learn with time and experience to naturally include in all your images. And when you find out how to inject your images with soul, you move into a whole new level of mastery and impact.

But how do you put soul into your photos?

Well today, I’m talking with someone whose is one of the best creative minds working in conservation visual storytelling today.

Morgan Heim of Neon Raven Story Labs is a professional conservation photographer and filmmaker who understands what it is to craft visuals with soul. Her work is by turns emotive, surprising, hilarious, and captivating. But always, always, Morgan infuses her work with a certain something, something that draws viewers in and makes them feel simultaneously curious, inspired and at home.

How she manages this? Well, that's what this interview is all about. We dish on her projects - everything from her fully original and amazingly unique take on the pertinent issue of wild crossings and car strikes, to how she settled into documenting the humanity of scientists working on the frontline of drug wars in our national parks (yes, you read that right), to how her ideas can cause scientists to transform from confused onlookers to jubilant participants in arts-n-crafts projects.

You'll Learn

  • Ideas for boosting your creative spark
  • How to build a transformative project, starting from your own personal "why"
  • How to let moments drive your images
  • Strategies for getting more emotive portraits for humans and wildlife alike
  • And.... some weird skills that can come in handy at random times

From Morgan:

"When I first started with photography, there's so many rules that you have to learn. Like you need to get XYZ shots. And then also coming from a science background, you're looking at things very analytically, very objectively. Emotions are almost considered, like they're going to compromise what you are studying, what you are revealing to the world. But in photography and with storytelling, that's actually what you need to have. You need to be objective as much as possible to really kind of see issues from various angles. But you need to really embrace the emotive moment, and that means getting comfortable with your own emotions and getting comfortable with being in the presence of emotions by other people."

Conservation Photojournalism Workshop

My guess is this episode will get you inspired and fired up to take to the field with your camera. And when that happens, we have your back. Learn what it takes to find and photograph a conservation story through on-the-ground experience, and coaching from Morgan Heim and myself. I invite you to take a look at this 7-day workshop, and put your inspiration to work!

If you've been photographing for awhile now, then you're no stranger to creative blocks. They're especially pesky when you're in a very familiar place and you just aren't sure how to see it with fresh eyes and make photographs that are both unique to viewers and, that air energizing for you.

I have been in that slump before, for sure. And there was a trick that I used to get out of it, that worked really well.

Not only did it help to get me out of this creative slump, but I also became re-motivated in my photography as a whole because it reinforced that my ability to create images is all dependent on myself and my mindset.

In this episode, I'm walking you through the assignment that I gave myself that worked like gangbusters to break me out of that creative slump. This is a wonderful tool for you to lean on if you're finding yourself with a creative block or, you know, feeling just playing board with your images.

You'll Learn

  • The importance of getting into the right mindset for breaking out of creative blocks
  • The 7-step process for completing your own "photo assignment"
  • How to ask questions through out your 7-step assignment to keep you on your creative toes

011: I battled my own style for awhile…Not in finding it, but in accepting it. I know it sounds strange. After all, isn't "finding your style" what every photographer aspires to? Actually, no. Especially. when you question if your style is what will earn you a paycheck. You question: Am I shooting the way editors want? The way clients want?

It's a difficult thing to find your style AND to find confidence within your style.

Inside this episode, I take you through my journey in finding and appreciating my own style with my camera, and in three critical things I learned in the process.

010: Without a doubt in my mind, I wouldn't be where I am in this moment if it weren't for the supportive and inspiring community of friends and colleagues I'm lucky enough to be part of as I work inside conservation photography. This niche is a very unique one, with our own oddball challenges and creative highs and lows.

To get anywhere, you need connections – but not just professional connections. You need real relationships.

While the list of reasons why community is so essential is a very long one, there are three reasons that float to the top:

  1. A community understands where your head is at when it comes to brainstorming story ideas, project ideas and shot ideas. Since you’re in a certain creative field all together, they get what it means to really hash out a creative strategy or navigate challenges in the field.
  2. A community shares resources, from editor contacts and referrals to insights about publications, pricing your work, dealing with clients, or what to do in different circumstance. You know you’re not alone or starting from square one, ever.
  3. A. community understands the ups and downs. When you gain an accomplishment that the rest of your friends and family think is nice and politely smile and nod, your community knows what a big deal that is and can celebrate properly alongside you.

So how do you build up this kind of career-boosting, supportive community?

It's all. about what YOU put into it.

An outstanding community is built up through your actions, and how you approach being a member. In this episode, I walk you through the three secrets to success.

009: Why is having a continuously growing email list so important to both your business and your impact as a conservation visual storyteller?

This is a really, really important question to be asking right now.

Imagine that you're documenting a conservation issue that's near and dear to your heart. And a really time-sensitive problem pops up. Maybe there's a legal decision that's about to take place, or a critically important nonprofit is losing funding. And you know that if you could get 500 signatures on a petition, or 200 people to call their state representatives, or 100 people to donate $5 so that you can get out into the field with your camera to document what's happening ... that it would make a huge difference in turning the tide on your conservation issue.

You might have tried putting call-outs like this on social media and gotten nothing but crickets back.

Imagine if instead, you could put a call out and people actually saw the message, and took action.

That's the power of a well-nurtured email list.

And that's why I spend an entire episode walking you through step-by-step how to create, grow, and consistently connect with your email list.

Even if you are an amateur photographer, or you’re barely getting started. Even if you’re a pro who primarily does assignment photography. Even if you don’t yet know why on earth you’d use a list or what on earth you’d email about…

You absolutely need to be building an email list right now.

I've even made you something extra special! Grab your free downloadable starter kit for creating your mailing list. This kit walks you through all the steps I cover in this episode, and is your key to a clear, actionable path for launching your ever so critical email list.

And no, I'm not talking about camera gear, or grant writing strategies, or even environmental communication…

This simple strategy is equal to hanging out with high quality people and having amazing conversions. In fact, that’s exactly what this tool is! In this episode, we are talking about Masterminds!

If you love sitting down with a small group of folks whose opinions you value and whose work you respect, and having conversations that leave you feeling like you can take on the world, then you're going to love what is in this episode.

002 It isn’t easy getting started in something new, especially in conservation photography where you’re juggling gaining technical skills with your camera, artistic skills with your composition, field experience, connections with editors, and most importantly, knowing if your images are actually reaching an audience and making an impact. It’s tough - but it’s also completely doable. Here are the common sticking points when you’re starting out and strategies for blowing past them and finding success.

Starting out in conservation photography can feel a little bit like a marathon race…
through a forest…
with fallen logs across your path…
and branches thwapping your face…
and really cold creeks to wade across that have those slippery algea-covered ankle-twisting cobblestones at the bottom…
and then there's the bogs…

And it's all so much fun! Even the difficult bits.

Because getting to the other side of those difficult bits is exhilarating.

But it's helpful if you have some strategies in place for when you do hit those obstacles, so you don't get too frustrated, or worse, stop all forward progress. Even the most prepared of us still appreciate a few insider tips so that those problem areas can be navigated through or avoided altogether. So today we’re going to tackle five common hurdles when starting out on this crazy and entertaining run, and strategies for leaping them.
