Not Bitter. Just Petty.: Recent Episodes

Doretea L. Burton

Bitter. Petty. Unforgiving. Vindictive. Hurtful labels, hurled after betrayal, bully women into submission. Your show host Doretea "Ree-Ree" Burton is on a mission to change the negative narrative surrounding the words bitter and petty. She and her guests help women change the narrative. By talking through turmoil, they process the bitterness brought on by life’s disappointments. With humor and heart, they help you embrace the anger and gradually transcend it.

I have been gone for so long.  This episode is my attempt to jump back in the saddle and to re-introduce frequent visitor Trenace Richardson as the new co-host of the podcast.

I'm excited still to do this podcast but the truth is, this is exhausting work.  I became exhausted from being still so hurt and emotional about the whole thing, the loneliness that ensues, feeling like I am a champion of people and I wanted and needed a champion for Ree-Ree.

Having one of my children express wanting to die and having Nyles say he didn't believe it... I've been in a rabbit hole y'all. A messy rabbit hole and I don't see a bottom.  But look on the brightside, I've been looking like I'm feeling great most days! There's that.....

I'm not in a good place.  It took me a while to get this episode done. I recorded the episode in May on a day I had been really, really, low.  I don't even remember what it was about. So I apologize in advance for my editing!

In this volume, I am talking with Jo.  Jo is the wife behind a blog and podcast titled I. Am. The. Wife.  She started it to deal with the immense pain she felt after her husband betrayed her while she kept up their home in children in England and he was away with the military.

Her husband was brave enough, disciplined enough, to finally end the affiar and attend counseling. But she shares candidly how hard healing has been. How invasive the thoughts are.

This is only a part of the interview. I plan to share in a fuure episode!

Have you ever done something that you knew for sure was a part of your destiny? Something that represented God's will for your life as you knew it, but it wasn't easy? That conference kicked my butt! So I reached out to Dr. Kenae Black. SHe is convening a retreat at the end of June called the Will of Wellness. I watned to talk to her about the retreat and her experience on how heavy it is to carry purpose from God.

LONG EPISODE ALERT!!!!

I do not enjoy Mother's Day anymore.

There's the fact that I've had six children with a man who from the day he left, has never ackwleged me.

It's the fact that I have a daughter who doesn't speak to me and a mother in law who also abandoned me and has chosen to welcome a mistress as her daughter-in-law.

What if this were her mother that her father abandoned?

I decided to share more of the story of becoming pregnant with my first daughter and how I was treated as well as more on the deterioriation of the realtionship with my mother-in-law. It is a deterioriation my daughter and her son spearheaded and left me holding the bag.

As you listen to my motherhood story keep in mind that as we fight to maintain a woman's Pro Choice rights, they don't expire. Nyles actually wrote in a court document that the entire problem was "she was supposed to have an abortion". Snake.

The converwsationwith my cousin Shun continues. On top of becoming a widow and losing three of her step children in a tragic accident, she was almost immedieately thrown into a battle with his first wife. It's hard to explain, you just have to listen.

I also talk a little bit about how I experienced similar behavior when my own daughter started writing articles about me saying i was an abuser!

We talk about how people say "Why do you care what people think" and "just let it go" and how hurtful...Lordy...just listen.....

My cousin's widow, Shun, is my guest on this episode.  We've talked about our expectations of God in many forms for over a year.  Shun shares her experience of tasting a sweet life... being married to my cousin for only 14 days... and then losing him when he passed away along with three of his children.  Her heart was broken becaue of the death of her husband and step children.  However, there's that part of our broken heart that seems taboo to talk about. The part of our heart that is broken because we thought God would keep this type of heartache from us.

It's episode one of the new season! Today I am talking to author Dominique Dewel.  She wrote a journal with the most petty title I've ever heard... "I miss you, but F#*@ you!".  The title resonated and set off a million bells within me. I am so proud of her creating this journal to help us put those complex feelings down on paper.

I miss you, but.... you know the rest!

As Nameica, Kimberly, Angila and I were wrapping up we started discussing things we would change on our wedding days. Titus 2 states that the older women should teach the younger woman. Nameica, however, says she's not sure she wants to follow the women of the old as it relates to marriage. Is it still a good idea to follow the old ways? Are the older women really helping us?

My guest is mindset coach De Lacy Paisley. We went all way 'round Gee's Bend in this conversation! She was such a pleasure to talk to.

In the first part of this interview, we discuss purpose and how we know we are in our purpose vs. serving in a role. And how to change out mindset in order to help stay in that purpose. We also talk a lot about labels. Specifically, how there are so many labels attached to womanhood and we need to start RE-JEC-TING all'oem!

We discuss aggressive, angry, emotional, irrational, and difficult. As De Lacy says at the bottom of the episode... that's just foolishness and fuckery! Take a listen and don't forget to check out the conference at OneFierceWoman.com. Can't wait to see you in May!

Cisco was full of wisdom in our last episode. I couldn't let go of many of his great observations and advice from our recording session. Here is a bonus episode of those clips I wanted to make sure to share with you.

:59 Cisco shares how he had to "wrap his brain" around his efforts going to church, being a family man, yet having his marriage end.

1:23 Talking with his children and having conversations as Daddy vs. conversations as a man. He shares advice she gave his daughter and her husband before they moved in together.

2:45 Cisco shares what he'd tell his daughter if she were to confess being cheating on and leaving her husband.

4:28 After two divorces, our guest tells us what he'd do differently.

6:05 What he's learned about women from women starts here. Then, we talk about what attracts women to married men and faithful fathers.

11:38 Cisco talks about the judgment he received because he was a man who had been cheated on. He also talks about how the religious condemnation about men getting divorced and the perception that they didn't lead their families.

16:40 What is it that makes him able to take a leap and get married again. This is a GOOOOD answer!

20:30 The Long game adulterous women play explained.

After seeing a post about Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena, I decided to explore a sensitive topic. Is it a fallacious narrative that African American fathers aren't present? How do we honor amazing black dads without dishonoring the experience of children and women who haven't been treated so well by the black fathers and husbands in their lives?

I started the conversation by chatting with Cisco Turpin.  I don't think I got my questioned answer but it's a great start! Take a listen and let me know your thoughts.

I am continuing to talk to Dr. Thandi. She is a divorced mother of two who after being betrayed by her husband, now has to coparent with him and his side piece. It ain't going good!

Like the word "petty" I think the word "co-parent" is used without thought. Women, lawyers, legislators, and counselors haven't really thought about the impossibility of working jointly with someone who is unreasonably angry and, by the nature of their actions, not acting in the best interests of their children.

Dr. Thandi and I discuss two alternative words, parallel parenting and counter parenting. I'm interested to know what you think.

Well, this is one of the episodes I recorded in August when I wasn't doing the best. I decided to release it because my guest Loveli Brown Esteem just made some awesome comments.

She posted a meme that identified anger as a useful and purposeful emotion in our life. When you've been wronged it so easy to tell people not to be angry or being angry is wrong. However, the Bible says "Be angry and sin not." Anger is a natural emotion we were designed to experience. Not engulf ourselves in, surely; but experience... yes.

The conversation with Certified Life Recovery and Addictions Coach Ashley Gilbert continues today. She begins with the concept of "freedom". Having the freedom to understand who you are and explore is where we need to begin. She goes back to the beginning of her marriage and shares what she may have seen as red flags. Not all marriages affected by pornography addiction can be saved. However, Ashley makes some great points about the need to save yourself. Go, Ashley, Go!

And remember....Pornography isn't a problem, until it's a problem. That's the bottom line.

I'm not even sure how to describe this episode. It's a continuation of episode 218, but we move on to my feeling that I'm heavy because of the loss of relationships with people. When you start caring more for yourself than you do pleasing others, you will lose a lot.

Also, I'm heavy because I haven't received justice. I want justice. Can't have peace in my soul without it. Each day that I live and I fake it to make it, I'm just not at peace. No justice. No peace....damn it.

Continuing with our Heavy series, Dr. Vikki Johnson and Dr. Trenace Richardson join me for this episode to talk about how the spirituality of our sexuality weighs us down.

There is power in our sexuality. It's an ancient power that is encoded in our DNA. As Dr. Vikki explains in this episode, however, it is a power and a knowledge that we are taught to forget. And in forgetting, we lose sight of loving ourselves and living authentically in every aspect. Especially, living authentically in our sexuality.

In this episode, I'm ranting... I mean talking... about Derrick Jaxn's wife and her bonnet.  She calls it her helmet of salvation and I'm here for it.  I have no idea what her spiritual and worldly motivations are behind appearing with the bonnet, but what I do know is that it has nothing to do with her worthiness as a wife.  Stop clowning the women for staying, for leaving, for protecting herself and her children, her future, her money, and / or her bonnet.  Derrick Jaxn is better than the  "Nyles'"of the world anyway. At least he stayed and is trying (for now).  And the other women Derrick tricked into a relationship are getter that the damn Krisica's of the world. At least they didn't know he was married, nor were they married.

In this episode, my guest is my cousin Neka. She provides a view of child support from the perspective of a mother who was never married. Her story is all too familiar. When the child support order catches up with the father of her elder daughter, he quits his job and the process must then start all over again. The end result? Her daughter has received about $5,000 in support over 16 years. There is no money for basic comforts. Robbing Peter to pay Paul isn't an option because in her life, Paul is often broke as well. She is often left effectively homeless because their housing is always insecure. Listen to this episode and hear her story.

She jumps right in in this episode as she talks about what she has survived. You'll appreciate episode 19 all the more when you hear about the low points she endured that became the fertile soil for the woman, mother, and business owner she has grown into.

I want to holler! I am so happy to have Trace of Big and Purty Custom Clutches as a guest today. Check her website out here.

She creates very artistic handmade clutch purses, and clever t-shirts featuring some great southern humor. Today, she's talking about her making her mind up that a reinvention was necessary and following the prompting of a friend and some guidance from YouTube, began creating custom clutch bags. The business has been a total success professionally, but I can tell based on the conversation, it's also been a balm for her healing. A major part of the reinvention she needed after her divorce.

In this episode we talk about the wounds, specifically those caused by words, that hurt us and how often we conceal those wounds and pretend to be strong.

Concealing your own wounds by choice is fine. What makes you bitter and angry is when someone else imposes upon you their need for you to surprise what you're been through.

That suppression makes you unhealthy. It also causes you to build a wall and harden your heart just to keep it together because you can't function with the trauma you've dealt with. It's an exhausting and duplicitous lifestyle.

Today she recounts meeting Ree-Ree at an event with Ms. Vanzant where Ree-Ree was Ms. Vanzant's bodyguard for the evening! She talks to the listeners about finding power and purpose in their image.

Her tips for finding the confidence to walk into a room and own it.

  1. The primary reason people can’t have a image that speaks is because it doesn’t match the who you are on the inside.
  2. Addressed the imbalance in the children’s and spouse coset than the woman she finds that with most women
  3. Learn to show up for yourself. God has a purpose and plan for you outside of motherhood and your marital status.
  4. Don't give out of emptiness, you have to give out of the overflow.
  5. You honor God when you show up in your fullness. We are all storytellers and we get to decide how we show up.

Check out these tips and more in episode six.

Episode 2: What is Petty

Today’s guest is my friend Crystal. Her ex-husband gained custody of their two young girls in the divorce process.

She was unprepared at the way the court viewed home educators and stay at home wives. She believed that because she invested so much in taking care of the family, she did’t think she needed a good lawyer. She relied on her Christian background and believed that simply telling the truth would be of benefit to her.

We go through the official definitions of some of the words used to describe betrayed women. Words like petty, un-dignified, and bitter. We compare these definitions with the reality of the circumstances. Crystal's contention is that it is people that load more into the meaning of bitter and petty than the definition describes. During the discussion we also unpack our feelings as to how these negative labels are generally directed toward women.
