Episode 43: Tips on teaching our kinds Empathy and Social Development

Shanna: Over that time I’ve definitely seen a shift in how kids interact in society. I’m sure there are a lot of reasons for this, but one thing that alarms me most is kids’ lack of Empathy and just being social. I ran across this article that gave some tips on how we as parents can help teach our kids Empathy which I turn helps them grow into kind human beings.

Tips Accepting no for an answer

sometimes not using the actual work “no” can help ease the pain of being told no while still teaching kids that they don’t get what they want when they want it all the time. For example, saying, “Maybe later” or “not today.” Empathy and Compassion

Children are naturally selfish. As they should be as they’ve only known “Their World.” Teaching our kids at a young age to help someone who’s scrapped they’re knee on the playground or a saying a kind word to someone that’s sad. This helps teach our kids kindness and compassion. Accountability

Children often blame others for things they have done. As parents it’s our job to teach them its okay to make mistakes and it’s even better to take accountability for their mess ups. Accepting Consequences and Criticism

Consequences follow all our decisions whether good or bad. Not everyone is going to like everyone all the time and teaching our kids that it doesn’t make them any less important if someone is mean will empower them in so many awesome ways!! Accepting and Understanding Differences

This starts by teaching our kids at a very young age that it’s ok that they have a red Popsicle while others have a green one. This seems so simple but really helps them see that difference isn’t bad.

Episode 27: The difference in raising girls vs boys and how we can help break gender stereotypes.

In terms of anatomy, a difference between boys and girls is obvious but when it comes to brain development the differences between the two sexes is actually pretty small. Behavior and development have more to do with life experiences than they do with gender. Although the differences are small they are indeed biological differences that separate boys from girls. Baby boys have higher levels of testosterone than girls and lower levels of serotonin which causes them to be more easily stressed and harder to calm down. Infant girls on the other hand show a greater tendency to comfort themselves.

Shanna will gives her opinion on the differences she’s experienced in raising her sons than her daughters. Take a listen.
