“To be successful at YouTube, you need coaching, hands down.”

Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!

Michelle Fong is a makeup artist, stylist, and fashion expert from Southern California. Her talent is bringing out the best in others with her styling and makeup tips, or just by bringing good energy to a room. She is a mom, an entrepreneur, and a student of life.

It’s always such a pleasure to feature my bootcamp students on the podcast. I love sharing the highs and lows of their journeys and celebrating their successes! Michelle’s social media journey started by doing lives on Periscope (who remembers periscope!?), but then decided to transition to YouTube. She got serious about her channel at the end of 2020 and decided to invest in my Zero to Influence Youtube Bootcamp. She was looking for accountability, guidance, objective eyes on her channel, and to get strategic to get the most out of her channel.

When she joined the bootcamp, she had between 7000 and 8000 subscribers. Now, she has nearly 19k!

“I wanted to do whatever I could to make the growth of my channel not just faster but more meaningful, so that everything that I do has a purpose.”

In this episode we talk about…* How Michelle got started on YouTube * Mindset barriers when it comes to YouTube * Investing in her channel by joining the Bootcamp * The sacrifices that come with going all in on YouTube * The importance of accountability * Collaboration in creating thumbnails * Michelle’s Bootcamp breakthroughs * Going viral on YouTube * Navigating brand deals

“I had to be serious about YouTube and treat it like a business.”

She started her YouTube channel 10 years ago doing graphic design and photoshop tutorials for editing pictures. As she learned more and more about photography, she wanted to share it with people, so she started creating photography tutorials as well.

Her channel took off after a viral video in 2016, but now that she’s been on YouTube for awhile, she’s finding that the struggle is REAL when it comes to figuring out what content to create!

The Secret Weapon Against YouTube Haters and Trolls: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 386Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.

How do you deal with negative comments and trolls on YouTube?

As a YouTube strategist and coach, I talk to mostly women all day every day about YouTube: everything from titles, thumbnails, topics, you name it! One thing that comes up time and time again, especially for larger channels (though the fear of it is more present in smaller channels) is getting haters and trolls. Part of the price you pay for Youtube success or any online platform is that you will get unsolicited feedback, and some of it won’t be very nice. When you put yourself out there, you’ll meet a lot of people who will love you… but there will be others who won’t.

So how can you deal with it? How do you not let it debilitate you? What’s the secret? Having a consistent gratitude practice.

We as humans tend to think that things are way worse than they are, and we tend to focus on the negative, which then spirals and snowballs. One negative comment can hijack your mind, even in a sea of thousands of positive ones. So how does gratitude help? It blocks all those negative, toxic emotions, like envy, resentment, fear, insecurity, and regret. Gratitude is extremely powerful. It’s been studied and proven to help combat negativity, as long as you’re consistent with it.

By building resilience day in and day out, you’ll start to be unbothered by the negative comments and trolls, and having a consistent gratitude practice every day is how you get there.

3 Ways to Boost Your Youtube Camera Confidence: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 384Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.

Over the years, I’ve worked with over a thousand video creators, and what’s the one thing that comes up a lot? Confidence. Confidence is a HUGE indicator of whether or not someone will be successful as a video creator, but camera confidence is something a lot of creators struggle with. Maybe you have enough confidence and motivation to get started, but as soon as you hit record, you feel like you’re not your most confident self. Maybe you freeze. Maybe you watch it back and you realize that it isn’t really you.

How do you get more confidence? How do you showcase that personality and charisma that you see other creators having? Confidence has a snowball effect: the more confidence you have, the better you are in front of the camera you are, the more interesting, dynamic, magnetic and charismatic you are, and then more people want to watch you. The more people subscribe and watch your videos, the more subscribers you get, and so on and so forth.

So what’s the secret? How are successful content creators with hundreds of thousands–even millions–of subscribers achieving this level of success? I feel like it boils down to three things.

  1. You Just Have to Do itThe more you do something; the more you practice something, the better you get at it and the more confident you are. That’s why athletes train! That’s why they are good at what they do! The more you do something and the more you practice something, the more confident you are in your abilities. Are you going to be the best and most confident version of yourself when you first started? Probably not, unless you had experience in front of the camera before starting. There’s no way you can expect to be super confident in something you’re just doing for the first time. This is why I talk about consistency a lot: consistency is just practice.

Every single time you film, you brainstorm an idea, you edit, you create a video, you get better, and the better you become, the more confidence you have. The more confident you are, the more successful you become, and then it loops over again, because the more success you see, the more confidence you get.

  1. Having a resilient and strong mindBy not allowing the fears, insecurities, and negative self-talk get to you, you’re protecting yourself. If you allow these things to permeate, it’s very difficult to perform in front of a camera in a confident way. Sure, you can fake it until you make it, and sometimes that helps, but your mindset and your thought patterns have a HUGE impact on your overall confidence. Your internal dialogue needs to be positive in order for you to be your best version on camera: the version that people want to watch, that people are captivated by, that people want to be friends with, that people want to subscribe to. Having resilience and strength against both internal and external negativity is a HUGE factor in being successful on camera.

  2. Having a strong mission……also known as your “why.” When you have a strong mission, it gives you something to focus on other than yourself. When you have something greater than yourself, and you have a desire to make an impact on the world and on a certain group of people you want to help, that mission becomes greater than your fears and insecurities. If you have a larger purpose, that can drive you, and help you to not focus as much as yourself. Don’t allow those fears to creep into your head, because if you do, you’re doing a disservice to the people you want to help by letting insecurity get in the way of your mission to help people.

6 Essential Mindset Habits of EVERY Successful YouTuber: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 382Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.

What’s the one thing that’s consistent among every successful YouTuber? Their mindset and how they think about their YouTube channel.

Video is a hard medium to “fake it.” If you’re not feeling good about what you’re creating, it’s going to show on video in a way it wouldn’t on a blog post or in an instagram picture.

Here are the 6 mindset habits that I’ve found to be truly integral to seeing the growth on YouTube you want.

  1. Don’t let fear stop you
  2. Avoid perfectionism
  3. Get in the habit of making mistakes… but don’t dwell on them
  4. Being unbothered by negativity
  5. Keep going despite not seeing immediate results
  6. Be willing to invest in yourself

Mindset is such an important component to seeing success as a content creator, and I’ve been wanting to create a course about it for so long. One Million YouTube Subscribers and Feeling Lost without a Purpose: Isimeme Edeko’s Journey Towards Self-Discovery: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 381

“It’s not about the numbers and the views, it’s about the impact and the message.”

Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!

From natural hair and wigs to self care/ hygiene routines, girl talks, late night vent sessions, and more… you’re going to see all the eclectic, multifaceted sides of Isimeme Edeko on her YouTube channel. Isi is revolutionizing how we as women, think, evolve, cater to, and nurture ourselves throughout our journey of womanhood by transparently documenting her own.

Isimeme Edeko started her YouTube channel 7 years ago when she was a junior in college. At the time, she was a student-athlete on a full ride track & field scholarship. As an athlete, she felt insecure when she would scroll through social media and didn’t really see anyone who looked like her. That, coupled with the increasingly impossible societal norms and standards for women, inspired her to create that space. She started her channel in February of 2016, and graduated in December 2017, and at the time, she had no idea it would ever become a career. She was studying hospitality and planned on being an event planner, but by the time she graduated, she was able to do social media as a full-time career.

As a Virgo, Isi is naturally prone to structure, organization, and attention to detail, so before she even posted a video, she was researching and observing other creators on YouTube. She started as a “nobody.” She had no social media presence really at all, and she wanted to start creating content as a hobby, but she never wanted to niche herself in. There was a lack of Type 4 hair representation at the time on YouTube, so when she started making content as a young college-aged woman, she was kind of filling that hole and it really resonated with young girls and women. She also started a series of “girl talk” videos that did incredibly well. Though Isi has a wonderful relationship with her mom, she understands that many girls and women don’t, so she was able to deliver those “big sister” conversations about health, relationships, sex, and personal hygiene that so many girls and women never got.

Isi’s hobby blew up, and she hit 100,000 subscribers before she graduated, but having that kind of influence in people’s lives was terrifying. She recognizes the responsibility she now has as an influencer and takes it very seriously. She is intentional with her content. She’s even met some viewers who have been watching her since they were in grade school!

“We’re stronger together than we are apart. Two minds are always better than one… you are stronger with the right person.”

Power CoupleIsi and her husband are college sweethearts, and he’s been one of the main drivers throughout her journey. She credits much of her success to having that strong support system. Now, they have what she calls “the trifecta;” they juggle 3 accounts: Isi’s brand, their brand together, and Josh’s brand.

Isi and Josh started their couples channel/brand about a year after Isi started her channel. They were both full-time student athletes, and Josh had goals to one day play in the NFL. He struggled with post-grad depression; something a lot of people can relate to, especially athletes. During the pandemic, they decided to immerse themselves in their brand and ended up accumulating enough followers and income for him to quit his job by November 2020. He’s now finding his own voice and elevating his own social media accounts, where he has partnered with huge brands like Nike and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Josh is almost the creative director and producer behind Isi’s channel; almost like the manager before the manager. His natural creativity is an asset in helping her with editing and scripting. What I love most about Isi and Josh is what a team they are, and how much stronger they are together. When one of them is winning, they’re both winning.

“I started YouTube as a hobby, it became a career, and then I found myself without a hobby.

The Ups and DownsIn 2019, Isi was invited to YouTube Black: an event that focuses on the top performing black creators on YouTube. While she was so excited and grateful for the opportunity, she still struggled with imposter syndrome and wondered if she even belonged there with so many other successful creators. The world of social media is visual and can be materialistic, and so she felt inferior to the people around her. She vowed to never feel that way again, so when she got home, to cushion her ego and to feel worthy of being in those spaces, she started buying more things and focused on her image. But in doing that, her content suffered. She started to feel inauthentic and superficial. She was living in an answered prayer, yet somehow feeling unhappy. She felt empty; like there was a void. She was living everything her college self thought was “making it.” She grew organically from nothing, but suddenly, it was no longer fulfilling. She wasn’t feeling aligned. There was such a disconnect that she got to a point where she didn’t even know what kind of content to create.

When Isi partnered with Hulu’s Hair Tales, something clicked back in. She realized that this was all so much bigger than her. The things we do and say matter. There is often a mask that content creators have that shows their lives as perfect… but they aren’t. Social media is curated. We show only what we want to show, and usually, that’s the very best. It’s exhausting to keep up with that kind of performance when things aren’t going well behind-the-scenes.

After many hiatuses due to that exhaustion and burnout, she realized that when your hobby becomes your career, suddenly you no longer have a hobby. Your life becomes content. What is ok to just be your own? Where is the line between sharing your life on social media and keeping some of those experiences just for you? She learned to have balance and boundaries.

“I’ve always tried to make sure my videos and my content had a message behind it that brought value and impact to people’s lives.”

Final ThoughtsIf your content is your life, and it’s not getting enough views and likes, it makes a creator think their life is inadequate or not enough. It’s unhealthy! Create those boundaries. If you’re thinking of starting a YouTube channel, make sure you’re starting for the right reasons and there’s a purpose behind it. It cannot be self-driven. What kind of value can you bring to people’s lives? As a creator, you have the responsibility of having influence over the lives of others. Create with intention and stay authentic to your purpose.

“When I learn better, I try to do better, and I also try to share it, because we have that responsibility as influencers. People are watching us.”

Another HUGE Announcement!!! Change is happening: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 380Power up your mind, create from confidence, and dazzle on camera with my ALL NEW Capture Your Confidence course! Capture Your Confidence is the complete step-by-step system that will help you bulletproof your mind against the negativity, and unleash your inner it-factor so you can confidently uplevel the way you look and feel on camera.

Do you ever struggle with negative self-talk when it comes to creating video content?

“Is this going to work out?”

“Am I wasting my time?”

“Do people think I’m weird?”

I have something I’ve been working on for almost a year that can help with that! I work with A LOT of content creators, and I see so much of what goes on behind the scenes… and not just for YouTube! I’m talking about video content on instagram, tiktok, you name it. The mind games that come with this career are no joke! Your confidence as a creator, your confidence on camera, and your internal dialogue are all crucial to your success and growth.

I’m releasing a BRAND NEW course all about CONFIDENCE and strengthening that internal dialogue. Your confidence on camera is a direct reflection of what’s going on in your mind. These two are intrinsically linked! There is so much more that goes into being confident on camera beyond, “just talk like you’re talking to a friend!” and this course is going to be a deep dive into that.

The Capture Your Confidence course is all new and is focused entirely on effective strategies that actually work in strengthening confidence. I’ve worked with hundreds of YouTubers since 2016, and I spend basically all day every day talking to YouTube creators, and sure, we talk about thumbnails and titles, but I’ve found that so much of our conversations center around the internal struggles that every single creator faces. Capture Your Confidence is a course designed for any kind of video creator, whether it’s on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram, to provide creators with tools and strategies to become more confident on camera.

A lot of people feel like they’re doing everything right, but something is missing, and usually the thing that’s missing is that spark; that charisma, that magnetic, engaging IT factor that makes someone watchable and keeps viewers coming back from more, and it’s this kind of confidence that will make you successful as a creator.

When you make what’s going on in your mind and how it translates to confidence a priority, it’s going to be a game changer. This course will strengthen your mind so that you dazzle on camera.

My mission is to support female creators in their endeavors to grow on YouTube, because I truly believe having a Youtube audience can dramatically impact your life in so many ways. Because of this, I am always thinking of ways I can help women achieve this goal. I have this podcast, my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp, I offer 1:1 coaching, and I just came out with my $39 Audience Attraction System Mini Course, but I knew there was something else I wanted to do, and that’s where Capture Your Confidence comes in. In this brand new course, I focus on being in front of the camera and bulletproofing your mind against any outside influences, so you can release that inner it-factor that will grow your influence on whichever platform you’re on. It’s so easy to succumb to negative influences, whether that’s from your audience, from performance, or even from people in your personal lives who seem to doubt your ability to succeed. This course will help you protect your mind from these influences.

Included in the course is everything you’ll need to improve your confidence on camera. Think of it as a crash course into everything it will take to become the best version of you. Confidence is learned. Confidence is something that EVERYONE can achieve. I’ve put a lot of time and effort into this course and I’m so excited to finally bring it to the world!

How to Make Money on YouTube with a Small Audience (less than 10k subs!): The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 376

“I don’t need 100,000 subscribers to reach my monetary goals.”

Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!

Tabs is a wife, a mom to two girls, works part time in a hospital pharmacy, and loves to sell used clothing. She shares her journey and everything about her business through her Youtube channel

One of the questions I get asked a lot is, “Erika, how can I make money with a small channel?” and I think Tabs is a great example of how it can work. Tabs has such an interesting niche and one I’ve never had on the show before. She’s a used clothing seller and shares it all on YouTube! She got into it a couple years ago and it’s just continued to snowball, due in part to jumping into my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp and my 1:1 YouTube Coaching (you know how much I love sharing my students on the show!). Most of all, she has only 7.6k subscribers. Her goal for her and her daughters is to live a lifestyle of freedom: to work when they want and travel often. She wants to transition her channel into a travel, thrifting, and reselling channel where she can highlight areas of Canada and the US and to be able to earn a full-time income doing it, and despite having a small channel, she’s been able to leverage her small but loyal audience, make money from YouTube, and inch closer and closer toward this goal.

“You’re not trying to please YouTube, you’re trying to please your viewer.”

Enrolling in the BootcampAfter spending some time on her channel, Tabs felt like she was in a rut. She was creating content, but it felt like it was all the same stuff over and over again. She was really struggling with thumbnails. She wasn’t growing like she wanted to. She felt like there was some secret to YouTube that she wasn’t in on. She was putting so much time into her channel and racking her brain trying to figure out what YouTube wanted from her. She had no idea what kind of content she should be making and for whom. She needed structure and guidance.

She found my podcast and decided to join my bootcamp and the pieces started to fall together. She learned how to talk to the camera, how to do intros and outros, how to create a schedule and plan her content a month or two out. By joining the bootcamp, not only did she have access to course materials that helped her focus her channel, but she became a part of an exclusive community of female YouTubers she could bounce ideas off of and get support from. Most of all, she had access to a library of years worth of group coaching call recordings with me!

“The more small improvements you make, the faster your trajectory goes.”

Tabs’ Biggest BreakthroughsThe first change she noticed was her audience retention, and once she saw that improve, she was hungry for more. She knew there were other areas of her channel she could improve on. She had always struggled with thumbnails, and she learned how to come to terms with herself to do things that were outside of her comfort zone and what she thought her aesthetic should be. She was so focused on what she wanted her thumbnails to look like and not what viewers would want to click on. By making thsee changes, she tripled her AdSense revenue in 3 months!

After her time in the bootcamp, Tabs was inspired by some of my other 1:1 coaching client interviews on the podcast and really felt that it would be a good fit. She had made so much wonderful progress in the bootcamp, but she felt like she needed someone to tell her what to do and lay out her path even more. Often, we know we have to make changes, but we don’t know where to make them or how.

Her biggest breakthrough was being able to see possibility: the hardest part is making the initial changes, and once you see them, you see the possibility and it fires you up and motivates you to continue to put those new tools and changes into practice as you continue to grow.

Final ThoughtsWhen it comes to YouTube, you have to be passionate about it because you’re going to be doing it awhile before you start getting paid for it. You’re not trying to please YouTube, you’re trying to please your viewer.

Goals are attainable when you break things down. You can set a goal to make $1,000 a month. Then it becomes $2,000 a month, and before you know it, your goal is $10,000 a month. “The biggest lie women tell themselves is that they can do it all.”

Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!

Desiree Martinez is a YouTuber, Podcaster, author, award-winning social media creative content creator, and advocate for Women Creators. She has worked with hundreds of businesses and brands to help them grow their business with better content marketing. Desiree knows what it takes to help your business grow, build a community, and get leads through a very noisy news feed. As the founder of Women of Video, she is helping to build economic impact and equality for the female creator economy with community, education & resources. She’s a hot mess mom of two, Mario Kart champ, Slytherin, and nerdy wife living in Michigan.

I’m so excited to welcome Desiree back on the show! I love having fellow female entrepreneurs on the show who have a similar mission as I do, which is growing their online presence through video to help them make money and improve their lives. I love Desiree’s work and I admire her so much! Check out my last episode with Desiree here!

Balancing Motherhood as a Content CreatorThis industry is a wonderful place for moms, but it is a challenge. How can you juggle being an entrepreneur and creator and a mom? Well, first you need to remove the idea of balance. You’re never going to be able to spend equal amounts of time on your business, your spouse, your kids, your home, etc… it just doesn’t work that way! But what you can find is harmony. Think of it in terms of music: sometimes in music, some instruments have more time than others, or are louder than others, but they all work together to create something beautiful. Establish healthy boundaries, temper your expectations, and know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Be strict with the hours you have. Get creative and find out what works with you.

“You have to spend money to make money.”

Investing in YourselfWhen you have kids, it almost forces you to make tough decisions. In the beginning of your business, you’re everything: you’re the sales team, the accountant, and the worker bee. But you know what? You need to spend money to make money, and the fastest way to grow is by investing in yourself, and sometimes that investment looks like outsourcing tasks for your business or childcare. Even though she went to school for graphic design and editing, it was a bottleneck in her business. She knew how to do it, she knew what she wanted it to look like, but she had absolutely no time to do it. Creating the content is the easiest and the most fun part, but she needed someone to do the heavy lifting of editing it. It made sense to outsource and pay for an editor because that was what was stopping her train from going. Not having the right help can be the difference from moving forward or quitting altogether.

When Desiree finally outsourced aspects of her business and parted with money, she was finally able to regain both time and sanity. Even if you’re not a creator, you need a break from your kids and your obligations to them at some point. Desiree was also in a fortunate enough position to hire an Au Pair, but believes strongly in the importance of “it takes a village” when it comes to raising a family.

How do you know if you’re ready to outsource? Find the bottleneck. What’s slowing you down or stopping you entirely from doing something consistently that can have long-term gain? Whether it’s hiring a video editor, or someone to manage your email inbox, getting a gym membership, or finding childcare, figure out what’s holding you back and understand that you have to spend some money in order to be able to make it.

You CAN’T do it all!The biggest lie women tell themselves is that they can do it all. We as a society have decided that women have to do it all, whether we are moms or not, whether we are in a marriage or relationship or not. Yes, you may have the same hours in a day as Beyonce, but Beyonce pays for help and pays for the time of other people to help her. We don’t have to do everything ourselves. Stop thinking you have to do everything. You don’t!

Women of Video Virtual ConferenceDid you know that statistically, even though female creators outnumber male creators, women creators make 59 cents to every dollar a male creator makes. Less than 12% of the top trending videos on YouTube are created by women.

Desiree is hosting the Women of Video Virtual Conference on March 11 and 12! This virtual event really encapsulates Desiree’s mission to help female creators build economic impact and equality through education, resources, and community.

With this conference, Desiree wants to give attendees an infusion of opportunity to help with growth in 3 areas: niche, platform, and money. With 36 focused, specific sessions over two days with speakers including myself, Desiree’s goal for this event is to help women with their goals and objectives as creators, so that they can take control of their time and money in a way they may not have been able to before. The best part? The event is free! CLICK HERE to register!

From 9-5 to YouTube Full-Time: How Tamara’s Timeless Beauty Turned Her Side Hustle into a Life-Changing Career: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 374

“I would not have been able to retire without YouTube.”

Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!

As a woman in her 60s, Tamara Staska strives to grow older gracefully, gratefully and beautifully. She’s a retired nurse, and on her YouTube channel, Tamara’s Timeless Beauty, she shares her lifelong passion for skin care, beauty, heath and wellness and building a community of like minded women as they embrace this next chapter of their lives.

I love to bring my students on my show! I love Tamara so much and I’m excited for my listeners and viewers to fall in love with her.

Like many people, Tamara was an avid YouTube consumer before she became a creator. She didn’t have anyone in her personal life to talk to about skincare and makeup, so long before she even started her channel, YouTube was her happy place where she could find a community of people with similar interests and passions as she had. Even now, as a successful creator, it’s the community aspect of YouTube that she loves the most.

Se thought about doing YouTube for a while, but it wasn’t until 3 years ago that she uploaded her first video. As she approached her 60s and a new decade, she said to herself, “it’s now or never,” so she set up her camera and the rest is history. When she started, she had no idea of the potential of YouTube. She thought it would be a fun thing to do, and that it would be a fun hobby to fill her time and supplement her income when she retired.

“The more you learn, the more you realize what you don’t know.”

Joining the BootcampAbout a year into her channel, Tamara has amassed 11,000 subscribers, which was a pretty amazing feat, considering that she was learning as she went, and for the first 6 months of her channel, she didn’t even know how to make thumbnails! But she really felt like the blind was leading the blind. She had no strategy. She was throwing stuff at the wall to see aht would stick, and to her credit, it did bring her a fair amount of success. In fact, her third video went viral! Great, right? It is great if you’re ready for it, but Tamara wasn’t. She didn’t have the content to back it up. She needed to learn how to plan her content and analyze her existing content to really understand what works and what doesn’t. She found my Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp through other channels and decided to join.

As it turns out, she joined the Bootcamp at the exact right time. She had some content in place that she could analyze, but she was ready for the next level of information, strategy, and planning; to understand the root cause of why some videos were popular while others weren’t. Her experience in the bootcamp was transformative; it was inspirational, motivational, and educational, and it was just what the doctor ordered. She found herself more excited than ever about her channel and right away, she noticed that her videos were performing better.

1:1 YouTube CoachingAfter her 6 months in the Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp came to an end and seeing just how much it had done for her and how much growth her channel had seen, she wasn’t ready to let go of me yet. She was hungry for more and felt like she needed more personalized attention and coaching, so she signed on with me as a 1:1 YouTube Coaching client.

“I really did not understand the potential of YouTube in terms of subscribers, views, and income.”

Tamara’s YouTube BreakthroughsTamara’s learning process has been an evolutionary one… she’s taken things step by step, day by day, and week by week. What she was learning energized and inspired her. It was the first time she’d understood the importance of thumbnails and honing in on her True Fan. By diving deeply into the nitty gritty details of her True Fan, she was able to come up with content that got more views. She was able to really nail down a strategy where she planned out a month of content, and through coaching could get feedback on each video. She learned how to increase her view time and how looking at analytics could help with her strategy.

Tamara’s had 4 videos get over 100k views. She’s much better with anxiety now, and she tries not to get too bent out of shape when a video doesn’t perform as well. There’s a balance between feeling excitement when a video does really really well but also not being overly attached to the outcome of a video so that when one doesn’t perform well, it upsets and discourages you. But most of all, Tamara’s YouTube channel has enabled her to retire early, which was something she never could have dreamed was within her reach 3 years ago.

Final thoughtsTamara’s advice to anyone just starting out on YouTube is that commitment, consistency, and willingness to be constantly learning and exploring is key to growth. Don’t allow yourself to get too discouraged. Stick with it and keep going!

Tamara would not have been able to retire without YouTube and it’s completely changed her life. She gets so much joy and fun out of it. Sure, it has its stressors and anxieties that come with it, but it’s such a great community and Tamara has so much fun. She plans to keeping doing YouTube as long as possible because of just how sustainable it is for her and what a healthy balance it has given her in her retirement life.

On the fence about taking the next step for your channel? Really want to understand YouTube for women and for yourself in a great community with step-by-step guidance? The Zero to Influence YouTube Bootcamp will help you understand and grow your channel!

How one Small Change Grew Nikol Johnson’s YouTube Channel: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 371

“When I became authentic is when I gained my audience.”

Ready for a fast & easy YouTube plan of action that really works? Get started TODAY with a customized, fool-proof YouTube action plan that will attract more viewers, more subscribers and more revenue with the YouTube Audience Attraction System!

Nikol Johnson rocked the beauty world when she decided to liberate her gray hair at thirty-nine. As a niche social influencer Nikol has over 13 million views on her beauty YouTube channel and reaches tens of thousands of women across her social media platforms looking for a change in the anti-aging beauty industry. Nikol has completed collaborations with IPSY, Pantene, M.M. LaFleur, Elemis, La Mer, and HSN to name a few.

Around 2009, long before social media was what it is now and when YouTube in particular was in its infancy, Nikol took an American Express-sponsored business course which inspired her to start a channel. She launched her channel in January of 2010 as a way to share her knowledge and expertise in makeup and skincare. For the first few years of her channel, she was doing makeup tutorials, making videos about procedures she was doing on clients, following trends, and doing what everyone else was doing, but it felt almost an abyss to her. Was anyone even watching?

Nikol’s IVF journeyIn 2014-2015, she went through an IVF journey that was physically and mentally taxing. At the time, IVF was still a pretty taboo topic. She also started going gray in her 30s, which only compounded her feelings of being an outsider. Nobody was really creating content about what the IVF process was like, nor was anyone creating content for women with gray hair. But when she “came out” so-to-speak to her audience, both about her IVF and her hair, her channel changed. Her authenticity attracted viewers to her channel..

Going grayIt’s important to remember that when it comes to beauty, there really are no rules. If you want to dye your hair until you’re 100, go for it! For Nikol, it just wasn’t attainable for her, so she decided to embrace her gray hair. She felt like it had a story to tell. A lot of women who go gray have all different patterns of how it grows gray. It was as if the old Nikol was leaving and the new Nikol was emerging, and she had to accept that new version of herself. She was so tired of fighting, so she just decided to embrace it. It was that declaration that she was going to embrace her gray hair that changed her channel.

“It was like the old me was leaving, and I had the new me, and I had to accept it.”

Blowing up on YouTubeIn March of 2019, Nikol started the #FierceAging series, which took real women of all age brackets and showcased their real, relatable issues, whether that was bags, pigmentation, eyebrows, etc. The series was well-received and her channel exploded. Now, Nikol’s mission is to inspire women, to support women, to get women back into makeup who have maybe left themselves or feel like they’re out of the game because they are older.

Dealing with Negative CommentsNikol just accepts the negative comments and understands that that person is just not part of their tribe. She sometimes acknowledges them with a reply, and finds a lot of people delete their comments once they’re called out. Her advice on dealing with the haters? Be grounded in yourself and protect your energy. If you allow yourself to constantly read negativity from people who don’t know you, just ask yourself, “is this person paying my mortgage?” No, they aren’t! So pay them no mind, and focus on what’s important to you. Channel that negative energy into something that works for you. Nikol likes to work out. Rather than taking in the negative energy in, she lets it out through exercise. Always remember that just because someone says something about you doesn’t make it true or relevant.

Nikol also is a big proponent of self-care, and while that phrase might be overused, she considers self-care as taking the time to nurture yourself. You cannot run on empty. You have nothing to give if your tank is empty. It’s easy to lose yourself in this career, so focus on yourself and know what you need so that you can give to others.

Final thoughtsNikol’s biggest YouTube struggle is finding new content ideas. It’s hard when you’re creating content in a niche market to not repeat the same things. Nikol is always researching and taking real-life experiences and turning them into videos. You don’t always need to follow a strict script or regimen when it comes to creation. Sometimes the best ideas and inspiration come from real life situations.
Nikol has a burning desire to make a difference. The three words she says a lot on her channel are bold, fierce, and unapologetic. Everyone comes with their unique journeys and special gifts and we are all learning from each other, so don’t give up. Giving up is the easiest thing to do. If you’re passionate about it, and it’s your desire, and you have something you can give the world (everyone does!), you just have to keep showing up. Keep showing what you have to offer. It takes work, but you want it, you’ll get it if you have that passion and that burning desire.

“You cannot run on empty. You have nothing to give if your tank is empty.”

How New York Times Best Selling Author Grows her Brand with YouTube! with Jennifer Scott: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 368

**“You can create whatever you want on YouTube, and I love that.”**

Be sure to check out my Free 2022 YouTube Goals Workbook! Inside you’ll find you’ll find an exercise that I do with my clients and in my Bootcamp that will help you stick with and achieve your goals on YouTube. The journaling and reflection exercises in the workbook have three different components that we’re going to focus on: money, lifestyle, and mindset, and will help align your life goals with your YouTube goals to help create the 2022 that YOU want.

Jennifer L. Scott is the New York Times bestselling author of Lessons from Madame Chic, At Home with Madame Chic and Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic (Simon & Schuster), Mademoiselle Chic (Daiwa Shobo), and Connoisseur Kids (Chronicle Books). She is also the creator of the blog and YouTube channel, The Daily Connoisseur, where she explores the fine art of living. Jennifer has been featured on CNN, BBC, and CBS News, and in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, USA Today, Newsweek, and The Daily Mail. She and her husband, Ben, have four children and they divide their time between Southern California and the English countryside.

Jennifer has been on YouTube for 11 years! She started her channel in 2011, not because she had plans to be a YouTube star, or even knew that was possible, but because she had written her first book and wanted to market it. Even back then, Jennifer recognized that YouTube was a powerful marketing tool. She already enjoyed watching Youtube as a consumer and had a blog at the time, and she figured, why not add a visual component?

For the first 6 years, Jennifer stayed in the, “I’m an author, not a Youtuber, my channel is only for marketing my books” mindset and didn’t even so much as look at her analytics, but she was always consistent and posted at least once a week, and has continued to do so for the rest of her time on YouTube.

“I spent six years not knowing what I had.”

Taking her channel seriouslyAround 2017, Jennifer realized that she wasn’t making anywhere near the amount of money she ought to be for the time and effort she put into her videos, and found herself at a crossroads: either go all in or quit. She decided to go all in, and began paying attention to her analytics, investing in editing, and improving the quality of her videos to improve her channel. She researched all the ways you can make money on YouTube and came to the conclusion that if she wanted to see returns, she needed to provide the best quality content she could. She needed people to watch her videos and feel excited about them, and the key to making money was to deliver high quality content.

Seeing growthJennifer sees herself as more of a tortoise rather than a hare. She’s seen steady growth for the last 5 years since her mindset shift when she started paying attention to her channel. While her content itself hasn’t changed much in 11 years, the way it’s presented and packaged has. Some popular videos have given her a subscriber bump here and there, but for the most part, her growth has been steady. Even when she has a video that doesn’t do as well as the others, she never considers any video a true flop because there’s always someone somewhere who will appreciate it.

Jennifer’s first book was the first self-published book to be reviewed by the New York Times. It sold over a million copies and she credits that to her channel. Despite it being published over 10 years ago, it’s still selling well, because she is always getting new subscribers to her channel who find her and buy it.

“I don’t want to waste people’s time. I want people to click on the video and have an amazing experience.”

Finding balanceJennifer is a mother of 4, and she uploads three videos a week! Two of her videos are on her main channel, and the other is for her paid subscribers, who she calls the Chic Society, all while continuing her career as an author. How does she do it all? Well, her #1 struggle is finding the time to fit in everything that she needs to do, but with the help of having a regimented schedule, a homeschool tutor, a nanny, and an editor, she makes it all work. She films on Fridays and Saturdays, and spends the rest of her week doing everything else that she needs to do for content creation. She very rarely takes a day off! While she did have a time where she felt very burned out, she kept going, and she’s glad she did. It’s the connection to her audience that really helps her keep going.

Final thoughtsJennifer is passionate about YouTube because it has given a voice and a platform to so many people who have been rejected by commercial enterprises. The beauty of YouTube is that it’s yours and you can create whatever you want! Though she wishes she had taken it seriously as a career and as an art way back 11 years ago when she started, she takes pride in helping women uncover parts about themselves that are hidden or that they would like to uncover, whether that’s expressing their style or even just helping them out of the drudgery of everyday life.

Her advice? Put up a shield to protect yourself from the mean or aggressive comments, because that is your best line of defense. There will always be people who don’t want to see you succeed, so protect yourself from that. If you’re in it for the long haul, choose to create content about something you truly love, not something that is trendy right now. Remember, a niche doesn’t always have to be specifically the kind of videos you make, it can be more about what a demographic of people like, and Jennifer’s channel is a perfect example of this. Instead of creating all fashion videos or all etiquette videos, Jennifer creates a variety of videos for a very specific demographic of person to appeal to that specific person’s interest.

*“What do you absolutely love? Make content around that.”*

I*********nside The Life of a YouTube Doctor with OBGYN Mama Doctor Jones*********: The YouTube Power Hour Podcast 291

******“I think it’s important to just find something you enjoy doing, and if it gives back to the world, that’s a bonus as well.”********

Be sure to check out my FREE eBook: How to Create Impactful Content During COVID-19 Pandemic! This 32 page guide will walk you through how to create content during a global crisis PLUS it includes over 75 YouTube video ideas that you can use TODAY to grow your channel!

Dr. Danielle Jones, known online as Mama Doctor Jones, is a board-certified ObGyn and online educator who has amassed a following of over 1 million across platforms. She is an expert in periods, pregnancy, and gynecologic health and is passionate about science education, autonomy, and patient-centered care. She’s been featured in the New York Times, on the cover of People Health, and is frequently featured as an expert by various news and media outlets.

Dr. Danielle Jones’s content creation journey started in 2009 as a first-year med student. She found that most people weren’t blogging their experiences in medicine. Through her blog, she really started connecting with people, hearing their stories, and their experiences helped shape her bedside manner. She then started creating content on Instagram, but at the time she couldn’t upload longer than 10 minutes of footage, and the content “died” after 48 hours. As a result, people were asking the same questions over and over, and it was frustrating for her. While on maternity leave, she looked up how to start a YouTube channel so she had a place to store her content and send people to when she did receive a lot of the same questions. Dr. Jones is the kind of person who, if she’s going to do something, she’s going to do it well, so she dove deep into researching YouTube and learning about the platform. She started uploading in January of 2019 at 3x a week. She managed that rigorous upload schedule for about 6 weeks, realized it was WAY too much, and then cut it down to uploading once a week.

***“Get an understanding of the platform and how to create good, entertaining, educational content that fills the niche you’re trying to get into.”***

Dr. Danielle Jones is a mother of 4, an OB-GYN, AND a content creator… how does she do it!? She has transitioned from private practice to a more flexible work schedule, her husband is very supportive, and YouTube is essentially her only hobby. That “hobby” is a full-time job in and of itself, and Dr. Jones estimates she spends at least 20 hours a week on her channel. She used to do everything herself, but now she outsources some of it to a small team. She gets content ideas from questions from her in-person patients, trending topics, and she also does a lot of reaction videos. As a doctor on YouTube, Dr. Jones focuses on educating a population, rather than specific people, which is an art to figure out how to do, but once you do it, people tend to really like it because the content is applicable to a larger audience. The reaction from colleagues and patients is a mixed bag, but mostly positive. As the doctor community on YouTube grows, Danielle says, “the more the merrier!” In fact, the YouTube medical community is pretty tight, and most of them are either friends in real life or talk a lot on the internet. Dr. Jones is passionate about gynecology and sharing her knowledge and insight, especially when so much of it is still such a “taboo” topic.

*******“I started YouTube because I loved it and it was a great way to share information I was passionate about. I think anytime you’re doing something that really means a lot to you, you just find time to do it.”*********

3 Key Interview Takeaways 1. If you love something, you will find the time. Dr. Jones has an incredibly busy life. Motherhood, YouTube, and medicine are ALL full-time jobs on their own, but she is so passionate about creating content to educate and help people, that she makes it happen. 2. Do the research. Before she even started her channel, Dr. Jones researched the platform and studied successful YouTubers who were totally outside of her niche and not even really creating content she would watch on her own. Just because you have knowledge or expertise does not mean people will automatically watch you. You will have more luck building your presence on a platform if you take the time to understand how it works. 3. Understand your community. WHO are you making videos for? What do they want? Before you throw out content into the void, you have to understand who you’re making it for and how to make it good, entertaining, and/or educational in a way that people will want to consume it.

THE BEST YOUTUBE/PODCASTING EQUIPMENT After interviewing HUNDREDS of successful YouTube creators, these are the pieces of equipment that hands down get mentioned time and time again. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list!

  • 4k Camera: Great for starting out and vlogging
  • Lens: This lens is recommended highly by many of my podcast guests, it gives the blurry “YouTuber” background look.
