Veronica Cisneros

Hello, my name is Veronica Cisneros, I am a licensed marriage and family therapist for over 7 years, a Group Private Practice owner, a Mother of 3, and married for 21 years. I help housewives transform their marriage, communicate effectively, and build confidence. Like you, I also struggled with cutting through the communication barriers. I felt like there was no reason for my husband and I to feel unhappy because we had it all. We just felt disconnected, and our conversations were filled with avoidance, kids’ hobbies, and schedules. I’ve helped hundreds of housewives who struggled with similar issues with my proven strategies and a blueprint of step-by-step skills. I am known for helping women step outside of their comfort zones, reignite their marriage, and reclaim their identity. I don’t do Band-Aids, I only teach life-changing healing methods. Whether you listen to the podcast, register for my course or join the free Facebook community, you’re in the right place. Let’s do this!

Are you attempting to get back into work after being a stay-at-home mom for a long time? Do you and your partner work as a team? When last did you go on a trip with your friends, and invest again in your life?

In this podcast episode, I talk to comedian, Alyce Chan about how to drop the mom’s guilt, shake free from society, and how to work as a team with your partner.

Meet Alyce ChanAlyce Chan is a writer, producer and stand-up comedian who performs across North America.

She has performed at the New York Comedy Festival at Caroline’s on Broadway, Broadway Comedy Club, Soul Joel’s, and more. She has garnered over 10 million views on social media and is regularly seen on Scary Mommy.

Her dry sense of humor and honest views on parenting with an authentic approach makes her one of the most relatable comedians in the parent stratosphere.

Alyce founded one of the biggest parenting platforms, MOMCOMNYC, which Vogue named among the top 6 funniest parenting Instagram accounts. When she’s not sipping hot coffee, she is probably chasing after her kids slugging cold coffee that was once warm.

Connect with Alyce on her website. Find her on Instagram, and find her on TikTok.

Summary* Shaking free from society’s expectations * Let your partner help you * Try to take a trip! * Chase opportunities

Shaking free from society’s expectationsMany mothers, from the moment they become pregnant and many years into their motherhood journey often have to intentionally and consciously try to shake themselves free from the ridiculous and often impossible standards that society places upon them.

I was very ragey and I didn’t know what it was, but I know what it was now. I focused too much on trying to be the perfect mom. I saw a lot of what society is expecting from you, you know, you hear things … I felt like everything I did I could’ve done better. (Alyce Chan)

Due to these unrealistic expectations, Alyce often felt guilt at having “failed” to be a great mom even though at that point she didn’t realize that the bar is impossible to reach.

Throughout the establishment of her career and as Alyce felt more settled in her role of being a mother and a comedian, she began to make it her own.

Let your partner help you

As soon as I felt like, “You know what, he can do it on his own, he can figure it out, and I gotta let that go”. (Alyce Chan)

A crucial part of undoing and freeing yourself from the barriers of social pressures on what a mother is “supposed to do” includes inviting and letting your partner help you with running the house, caring for the kids, and contributing to the family.

He can figure it out, he’s also a parent. Your partner is there, that’s why you guys are called partners: you don’t have to do everything and he doesn’t have to do the things that you do the same way. He can do things on his own, his way, and you don’t have to criticize it. (Alyce Chan)

You and your partner are a team, and you should work that way too.

It doesn’t matter how you divide responsibilities or what it looks like, because it will vary from couple to couple, but it’s important that you are a team, support, respect, and work with one another in building a loving, functional, and respectful household.

Try to take a trip!Additionally, one of the best ways to build and test a system that works with your partner is for you to take a trip away with friends!

Set up a system with your partner, be away from the home, and let it unfold, because it’s also his job to parent and run the house and you have to be able to trust him as well.

Not only will a trip stress test and strengthen your marriage, but it will also give you the time to rest and reconnect with yourself, and your friends.

It’s okay to be greedy, it’s okay to be picky because it’s ultimately your time away from your kids for yourself so that time is priceless! (Veronica Cisneros)

Chase opportunitiesWorking mothers often have to say “no” to opportunities and events when their kids are babies, especially when they are the sole or main caregivers.

So, once the kids are grown, and they can handle being without mom for some time, those working mothers have to gear up again and get back into the game. It can be difficult, feel awkward, and take some time, but it is possible – more than!

This is the year where I’m like, “That makes sense. If I see the value in it, if I see the value for me or my brand I’m going to say ‘yes’ to it”. (Alyce Chan)

The mom guilt might still sometimes be there, but it does get easier. Choosing yourself after caring for someone else can feel selfish, but it is not. You and your future and personal life deserve attention, focus, and invested energy too. If not now, then when?

Has your marriage experienced growing pains as your business develops? How do you navigate earning more than your partner? What does it take the find the true balance between what is needed and what is wanted?

In this podcast episode, I talk to attorney, Nicole Swartz about how high-achieving women can build strong marriages.

Meet Nicole SwartzNicole Swartz is an attorney for women business owners.

She started as a corporate attorney. And then a funny thing happened…Nicole started a skincare company.

She created a formula, packed her car with products, and headed to a tradeshow. In two years, they went from a side hustle to a full-time international company. They were in the Golden Globes Gift Bags and hundreds of stores around the world.

One day, Nicole woke up to a cease + desist letter in her inbox. Someone trademarked her brand. They owned the exclusive right to her business name and she couldn’t use it anymore. Nicole had to rebrand everything in 30 days.

Nicole became OBSESSED with trademarks: she didn’t want anyone else to lose their brand. So she learned everything about them and her friends started asking her to trademark their brands. Nicole realized that she loved working with women to start + grow their businesses. She then sold her skincare brand and started her own law firm – a law firm for women.

Connect with Nicole on her website. Find her on Instagram, and find her on Youtube.

Summary* Managing a business and a marriage * Finding the balance * Change the rules

Managing a business and a marriageFor most typical households in the US, women are the “backdrop” of the household: they send the Christmas cards, remember to pick up the laundry, and schedule the annual medical appointment, and the PTO meetings.

Often, the husbands are not held to the same expectation by society, and so the extra work falls on the wife. When she gets busy with a business, who picks up that slack?

It was a very confusing thing because it’s like you want to be an equal partner, but why is it falling on you to pick up the slack? We were not really prepared for how to handle it. (Nicole Swartz)

When both partners are working, the household chores and work divide have to look different to the standard. Both partners need to communicate, be held accountable, and contribute to the running of the household.

Finding the balance

There have definitely been points in the relationship where I’ve seen myself push pause on family life for a little too long, and then we have this moment where I’m like, “You’re not putting in any effort!” and he’s like, “You’re not putting in any effort at all, you’re somewhere else.” (Nicole Swartz)

It is incredibly important to be aware of what you accuse your partner of, especially if it comes from a strong emotional response.

Do you feel strongly that your partner is not making a genuine effort? Sometimes this may be true, but sometimes this feeling may come from your personal feelings of guilt for not being truly present either.

It’s been hard for us to both recognize and probably more so me that I do need to put in more effort into the family side of things too, like, have the type of relationship that I want. (Nicole Swartz)

Of course, you cannot put 100% of your energy into family, business, and personal life all at the same time.

There will be an ebb and flow to your process and to how you dedicate yourself wherever and however it’s needed, but the point is that you maintain that level of intentional, self-awareness, and honesty with yourself.

Change the rulesYou can change the rules, totally!

What do you and your partner want the marriage to look like? How can you two build your dream relationship together as a team, and support one another along the way?

How can you navigate between what you think you should do versus what you and your partner want to do?

You do not have to make your life suit the standard. You can change the rules and create a life that you both feel happy, fulfilled, and comfortable living while pursuing your goals.

Lately, I’ve really been trying to meditate on what I actually want. Like, I think success to me is just figuring out what makes you happy, and doing that. (Nicole Swartz)

Summary* You are the success formula * The other side of being a high-achieving woman * You can change things for the better * Overcoming high-achieving loneliness * Chelsea’s advice to high-achieving women

You are the success formulaHigh-achieving women are often looking for the perfect formula, the perfect sequence of steps and events that will take you from one thing to the next perfectly each time.

However, no number of routines, habits, choices, or actions will be useful or supportive to you if you do not have yourself in order first.

I noticed in other areas of my life that when I let go of the idea that there was a formula, and was submissive and just being open to the process, and being willing, everything has gone smoothly, way better than I could’ve ever imagined! (Veronica Cisneros)

Even if you do not know what the next step is, it is far more important that you make your choices from a place of peace, self-accountability, and honesty, because whatever action you take from that place will be the right action!

Rather than trying to orchestrate everything to the T, have faith in yourself and in life, and let things unfold while you take whatever action you can from that place of trust.

The other side of being a high-achieving womanSure, when you’ve got the husband, the job, the dog, the kids, the business, and the house, it can seem really pretty and perfect from the outside.

For any high-achieving woman who is living life to the fullest, there is always an underbelly to that success. There have been times of struggle, uncertainty, and insecurity or discomfort.

I think we have to remember that it is all the little tiny decisions that we make every single day that create the big picture. So, it’s important for us to get out of that “big picture” mindset sometimes. (Chelsea Christensen)

Chelsea’s advice to women is this: instead of focusing on what your life looks like, focus on how it feels to live your life. Is living your life enjoyable to you? Do you enjoy getting up every morning and doing the things that you have set out for yourself to do?
That’s a powerful indicator of sustainable, genuine success. If you do not feel that way – yet – then it’s a good time to start making changes in your life.

The more that we ask ourselves the question, “Does this feel right? Does this feel good? Is this the direction I want to go? What am I holding onto that I am unwilling to let go of?” … if we’re continually asking ourselves these questions, I think that’s where we can truly live from a place of happiness. (Chelsea Christensen)

You can change things for the betterIf you are taking a hard look at your life and coming to realize that it’s not what you expected, that it’s not what you want, or that your daily routine for yourself or others takes more than it gives back to you, then stop. You can change it!

If we want to change the situation then we can make new choices, and that’s what I ended up doing because I knew that this was not working for me. (Chelsea Christensen)

You don’t ever have to stay in the sticky downward spiral of thinking that things are bad, or feeling bad every day. Either on your own, with the help of a therapist or coach, or with a group of like-minded women, you can fully take back your life.

Overcoming high-achieving lonelinessWhen you are giving your time and energy to multiple projects, businesses, or people, you might sometimes feel that you are always giving but not giving enough.

In these moments, pull back and reassess:

  • Where can you ask for help?
  • How can you reschedule your calendar?
  • Where can you cut the slack and try something different?

Oftentimes, in these moments of loneliness, the connection might be lacking. Feeling secure in the connection that you have with your kids, partner, or yourself can help you more than you may realize because it provides you with a sense of security.

Invest in building a connection with a coach or therapist where you can speak freely and openly about what is bothering you. That sense of freedom is invaluable.

Take the responsibility into your hands of connecting with like-minded people who also understand, so there’s not that resentment that you might feel towards your friends, “Why don’t you get this? Why can’t you understand?” (Chelsea Christensen)

Choose a close group of friends that are outside of your immediate family or friend circle that can be your professional support system.

Chelsea’s advice to high-achieving womenBring your family with you into your thoughts, feelings, and experience.

It teaches them that it’s okay for you to have things that you care about, and to invest in the things that you want to work toward. So, don’t hide your passions from your kids. You are their mom and you are yourself too.

Are you a high-achieving woman who’s a mother and an entrepreneur? What do you tell yourself about the expectations you expect yourself to fulfill? Do you allow yourself to have support?

In this podcast episode, I talk to Myri Dujovne about the lies that high-achieving Moms tell themselves.

Meet Myri DujovneMyri lives in the Bay Area, CA with her husband and 2 kids, a girl and a boy, and she’s been planning and decorating parties since as long as she can remember. The first big party she planned was her cousin’s bar mitzvah (while planning her wedding too!) and she fell in love, she knew this was something she loved, though it took her a few years to realize she could make a business out of it.

What Myri love’s the most about planning and styling parties is to look at a space and imagine the possibilities, somehow the ideas always come to her when she sees a venue. Myri loves to be challenged with creative themes and, her newly found passion, balloons!

During the morning you’ll find Myri in her studio in Belmont, CA, cutting, designing, and ballooning. And the afternoons are all about her kiddos. On weekends she runs around town helping people make their parties’ dreams come true and throwing some confetti around.

Connect with Myri on her website. Find her on Facebook, Instagram, and on Pinterest.

Summary* “We’ve got to be on top of everything” * “I’ve got to keep these plates spinning” * What are you looking for?

“We’ve got to be on top of everything”For modern working mothers, the tasks to complete at certain standards and expectations are nearly impossible to achieve.

Some working moms feel like they have to look great, be fit, have time for their partners, have a great relationship with their kids, keep up a clean house, work on their business, and look good while doing it all.

We have to look healthy, we have to look thin, we’ve got to be on top of things, we have to get to all the appointments, we’ve got to do all of these things, there’s so much on our plate, and there’s so much judgment. Holy shit, there’s so much judgment, and you have to keep it together, because you’re running a business. (Veronica Cisneros)

What’s crucial to notice about these expectations is that they are based on “looks”, and that you “look” to others like you are handling everything perfectly.

Once people let go of that ridiculous notion, everyone can take a step back, breathe in and out, and actually be honest in their state of being.

Let go of those harmful and suffocating expectations so that you can genuinely ask for help when you need it and enjoy your success when it comes around instead of chasing approval.

We want to believe the lie. We want to believe that everything’s okay. We want to believe that our kids are going to be fine, and that it’s not that big of a deal (Veronica Cisneros)

“I’ve got to keep these plates spinning”Have you ever felt like you have to keep all of the plates spinning because no one else will? How often have to ask for help without feeling like a failure?

You need to accept help. You should allow people to help you when you need it because that exchange is what creates and sustains a community, where people look out for one another.

There are so many responsibilities, and there is so much demanded of us, but this is the reality we thrive in. (Veronica Cisneros)

High-achieving mothers often need to learn how to ask for help when they need it, and they need to let themselves rest and be supported by their partners and their families.

However, the fast-paced and intense lifestyle is often an environment in which they can thrive, especially when it is sustainable and supported by relationships with good communication and love.

What are you looking for?As a high-achieving woman and mother, what would help you to do the work and the routine that lights up your energy and passion without draining your spirit?

I need someone to be like, “Today was shit … having a fucking business is hard … and I would love a group of people that understand that part. (Myri Dujovne)

Some days, weeks, or months are a tough struggle.

Mothers that are entrepreneurs experience life through a slightly different lens, and having a community of women that understand that nuance can truly support one another

If this is you, and you are looking for a group of women to receive and give support and love to, join us!

Does it seem like your husband refuses to see a problem? Do your concerns sometimes feel dismissed? How can you communicate your needs and have them actually be heard by your partner?

In this podcast episode, I talk about how to get your Husband to see that there is a problem and ways to rekindle what you once felt for each other.

Summary* What is the issue? * Conversation starters to connect with your husband * Rekindling the spark with your partner

What is the issue?Sure, partners can disagree on the level of importance around certain topics, but sometimes something can be urgent for one partner and non-existent for the other.

What does the conflict feel like or look like in these situations, do you feel as if:

  • Your partner does not hear your words or the meaning behind them?
  • You are being ignored or even unintentionally gaslit?
  • The change they make is temporary and the old problem arises again each time?

How am I supposed to get my husband to see that there’s a problem? Well, this is a common complaint that I get from so many women. It’s almost as if their husbands refuse to see that there’s an issue, almost as if they’re afraid to see there’s an issue. (Veronica Cisneros)

Conversation starters to connect with your husband1 – Start with a positive statement. Begin your conversation by expressing your love and appreciation for your husband because this will help to set a positive tone for the conversation, and show that you are not attacking him.

2 – Use “I” statements to express how you feel instead of blaming him or making him the sole culprit of the problems in the marriage.

Try saying, “I feel like we’re not as close as we used to be”, or, “I’m worried about our future together”. (Veronica Cisneros)

3 – Be specific about the issues that are causing problems in your marriage instead of throwing out a blanket of frustration.

For example, if you feel like your husband is not spending enough time with you, explain how this makes you feel and why it is important to you.

Ladies, as you are utilizing these conversation starters, I also want you to be open to him expressing his feelings as well, without judgment or criticism. (Veronica Cisneros)

4 – Listen to your husband because it’s important to also hear his response and point of view which helps you to find common ground and therefore a solution.

Remember that the “truth” is subjective, and there isn’t always a clear right and wrong when it comes to arguments. You need to hear one another out, truly, and decide together how to move forward.

Nobody owns the truth. This is his truth just like you have your truth, but if the goal is for you to open up and for you to have these uncomfortable conversations and for you to get him to see that there is even a problem, then it’s going to be very important that you listen to his perspective. (Veronica Cisneros)

You do have to agree with his perspective, but you do have to listen and understand it.

5 – Avoid bullying and criticism. In those heated moments, it feels tempting to shun or criticize your partner and bully them because you maybe want them to feel the same frustration that you are feeling.

Do not give in to that temptation, because it only causes more trouble, and doesn’t help either of you in the long run.

6 – Seek professional help. If you are having trouble communicating with your husband or finding a solution to recurrent issues in your marriage, find a therapist that you can both talk with to find a way back to one another and forward together.

Rekindling the spark with your partnerWhen did you and your partner stop trusting each other? When did you two stop being friends?

Even though you two may have drifted, you can repair it, and that’s even more possible when you are both present and willing to do the work.

Have you ever suspected that your spouse could be committing financial infidelity? Has money often gone missing or you’ve noticed fewer pay cheques being deposited? Do you have access to your financial statements and passwords?

In today’s podcast episode, I am joined by Tracy Coenen to discuss all the red flags to look out for in your marriage should you suspect financial infidelity.

Meet Tracy CoenenTracy has been investigating fraud for more than 25 years, but she didn’t always want to be a forensic accountant. With a dream of one day being a prison warden, Tracy went to Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI to get a criminology degree. A class on financial crime investigations reminded her how much she loved Encyclopedia Brown books as a kid. She continued her criminology degree but added accounting and economics courses so she could sit for the CPA exam and here Tracy is, finding money in cases of corporate fraud, high net worth divorce, and CONNECT WITH TRACY other financial shenanigans.

Connect with Tracy on her website. Find her on Facebook, Instagram, and watch her on Youtube.

In This PodcastSummary* “Luck favors the prepared” * Key red flags to be aware of * Financial infidelity and what to do about it * Fairness

“Luck favors the prepared”

If you’re married, even if you don’t even have divorce on your radar it doesn’t matter what state your marriage is in, it is about being informed about your finances. (Tracy Coenen)

In many cases of marriages today, it is still mostly the husband that takes care of the money.

Because of this, there are so many marriages where the wife does not know what is going on with the money, and they rely completely on their spouse for the truth.

There’s nothing to be ashamed of, it is very common, and you trust your spouse. You trust him to take care of the money and have your best interests at heart but the problem that creates is that he’s not accountable to anyone or you because you don’t know where that money is. (Tracy Coenen)

Even if your marriage is going well and you completely trust your spouse with money, you still need to know what is happening, how much money is coming in, going out, and where it is going. Be prepared and in the know because that will lend you power.

Key red flags to be aware of* If your spouse doesn’t want to share passwords for accounts with you: if your name is on the account, you have the right to be able to access it at any time. If you need to, call the bank to set up a separate login or reset the password.

If your name is on the account, you can walk into a bank branch with your identification and you can get copies of the account statements there as long as your name is on the account, you have legal access to it. (Tracy Coenen)

  • Look for charges that don’t make any sense: are there random hotel charges, or restaurant charges that your spouse would never usually go to?

Look at how many pay cheques were deposited into the bank. If the total number of cheques deposited is less than average, it’s possible that some of the money is being used elsewhere.

Financial Infidelity and what to do about it

Financial infidelity encompasses any lies that you tell your partner about the money available in your marriage. (Tracy Coenen)

These could be lies about:

  • How much a spouse actually earns
  • Where the spouse is spending money
  • Any secret spending
  • Spending outside of any agreements that you have with the partner
  • Hiding money

If you suspect – or know – that there is financial infidelity in your household with your spouse, you need to protect yourself.

Get and gather information as much information as you can as quietly as you can. Get copies of any original financial documents both in the house or online and keep them in a safe place.

Even though you will eventually get all that kind of information if you go down the path of divorce, your attorney can get all those things with subpoenas, it’s so much easier if you have that information right up front. So, gather the statements, start to look through them, and see what you notice. (Tracy Coenen)

FairnessIf your marriage is shifting and divorce is on the cards, you need to protect and arm yourself because, unfortunately, divorce can turn into a battleground.

This information will help to protect you, your finances, and your assets.

People don’t have to be accountants to do this I wanted to make a way for you to walk through the steps really easily and get at least some level of comfort of what’s been going on with the money. (Tracy Coenen)

Are you good friends with your partner? Have you felt that you and your partner are drifting from one another? Do you want to make a positive change in your relationship that will uplift and support it in the long run?

In this podcast episode, I talk about the 6 secrets to a successful marriage. I have been there, I have done the work, and you can too!

Summary* Friendship * Communication * Respect * Keep the romance alive * Learn to forgive * Work as a team

Friendship

Your best friend is this sacred relationship that right there is the number one secret for a successful marriage, being best of friends. (Veronica Cisneros)

Marriage is a beautiful thing, but it does require a huge amount of commitment, love, and effort to make it work, and when you are good friends with the person that you are married to – you like them and you want to spend time with them – it makes it a little easier!

Have fun together, play with one another, and have a joyful, flirtatious banter!

Imagine you and your best friend are out on the town together for date night, and the kids are being taken care of at home, what would you do two? What would you laugh about? Talk about?

To build a strong and successful marriage you have to be the best of friends. One of the ways that Willie and I have built this very strong friendship is that we are open and honest about the flaws that we bring into the marriage from our personal lives. (Veronica Cisneros)

Being friends with someone very likely guarantees honesty and self-awareness, and additionally, a non-possessiveness. You and your partner treat each other with love and respect, not ownership or obligation.

When you and your partner are friends, you assume the other has the best intentions instead of constantly judging them or making them the enemy. If you are not friends with your partner, then you might run the risk of becoming his mother.

CommunicationYes, communication is important, but it becomes much easier when you have a friendship in place with your partner.

Communication is essential. It is important to communicate openly and honestly with your partner and share your thoughts and feelings, and concerns with each other. Listen to each other to understand each other’s perspectives. (Veronica Cisneros)

It all comes together. When you are friends, you have each other’s best interests at heart and feel that each other is trying, so that when you communicate you work as a team and not against one another.

However, if the friendship is weak – or non-existent – then communication can become difficult because neither of you feels that the other is telling the truth or being fully honest, which can make vulnerability difficult.

RespectIf you feel that your partner does not respect you, then you need to shift the conversation another way and consider whether or not you respect yourself.

Because if you do not respect yourself, if you do not uphold or enforce boundaries with yourself too, your partner might see that – or subconsciously feel it.

You need to treat yourself with respect too because sometimes people will treat you the way that you treat yourself.

Absolutely you have to set boundaries. Why haven’t you set them? There might be a lack of respect for yourself. Hence the reason why there are no boundaries set. (Veronica Cisneros)

If you set the boundaries and uphold them, he cannot disrespect them without feeling the consequence. What are your consequences, and are you enforcing them?

Keep the romance alive

Romance is an important part of any successful marriage. Keep the spark alive by doing things you both enjoy. Surprise each other with small gestures of love and appreciation. How are you keeping the romance alive? (Veronica Cisneros)

Use this tactic: if you find yourself saying, “I don’t have time to keep the romance alive in my marriage”, then switch that up and say, “It’s not a priority to keep the romance alive in my marriage”. How does it feel to say that?

If it feels bad, then you need to make it a priority and make time for it. List four things that you can do to bring the spark back to your marriage and keep it burning.

Learn to forgiveThis is an important step for any relationship, especially marriage.

You and your partner need to learn to forgive one another for mistakes because holding grudges can lead to resentment which damages a relationship in many ways.

Resentment can get you to keep score against your partner which slowly turns them into the enemy.

When you are willing to learn to forgive, this adds a bonus to the relationship because you don’t feel like you’re serving jail time to your partner. (Veronica Cisneros)

Without forgiveness, the past is always present, and that makes it difficult for anyone to move forward and create a future together.

Of course, forgiveness can be difficult. It is more than okay to seek professional help if you need some help moving through forgiveness with your partner.

What are some things that you are willing to forgive to move forward? Remember, you don’t have to compromise yourself, so what are you willing to forgive without losing yourself?

Work as a teamMarriage is a partnership. Support each other to achieve the goals of the marriage and those that you each have in your personal lives.

Remember, you do not have to do this work alone! I am looking forward to working with you and helping you at each stage of the process. Investing in yourself and your marriage is invaluable, and it can be done!

Do you feel neglected in your marriage? How can you make genuinely positive changes in your marriage? Are you neglecting your needs as well as the needs of your partner?

Far too often I hear the same topics come up with the couples in my private practice. In this podcast episode, I talk about the 5 habits that destroy marriages.

Summary* Lack of communication * Infidelity * Neglecting your partner * Constant criticism * Refusing to compromise

Lack of communication

Communication is the key to a healthy relationship. When couples stop communicating with each other, it can lead to misunderstandings, resentment, and ultimately the breakdown of the relationship. (Veronica Cisneros)

One of the biggest reasons why a lack or breakdown of communication is dangerous to a marriage is because it can signal that your friendship with your partner has suffered.

Ultimately, the reason why you guys aren’t communicating at the level you want to communicate is because that friendship of being the best of friends has died. Neither of you has shown interest in each other’s lives, and neither of you has taken the time to get to know your partner. (Veronica Cisneros)

You and your spouse need to be friends! As well as partners. You need to feel like you can be vulnerable with each other, be honest, and loving, and see one another as equals in a team instead of going against one another.

Infidelity Infidelity is one of the most common reasons for divorce. Cheating on your partner can cause irreparable damage to the trust and intimacy in your relationship.

You and your partner must have an open conversation about what infidelity looks like to each of you otherwise you might not know if you are crossing something that’s a boundary for your partner.

In addition to that, it is extremely important that you guys also identify your areas of flexibility. (Veronica Cisneros)

Have this conversation now, even before any issues arise, so that you can proactively avoid them.

Neglecting your partnerNeglecting your partner can be just as damaging to your intimacy and trust as cheating.

When you stop paying attention to your partner’s needs and desires, it can lead to feelings of loneliness and resentment. (Veronica Cisneros)

Why do you feel neglected in your marriage? It may very well stem as a symptom of the fact that you two are not communicating with one another.

Be honest with yourself: have you neglected your partner? How? Be real with yourself, and be honest. If you want to make positive changes in your marriage and in your relationship, you need to show up with honesty and accountability.

Constant criticismConstantly criticizing your partner damages both of you. It drains you both, divides you, and is a poor attempt at getting something to change.

How many of you criticize your partner for loading the dishwasher wrong … not checking emails … not planning out your anniversary? (Veronica Cisneros)

Make a list of the ways that you have often criticized your partner, and again, be honest with yourself. It is important to call yourself out because for a long time, you might’ve been stuck in this cycle, and nothing will change unless you change.

If you are criticizing in your marriage, I’m going to tell you right now that that’s one of the four horsemen. Gottman calls this one of the four horsemen because it’s one of the predictors of divorce if you’re constantly criticizing … if that’s you, honey, I’m going to tell you right now, knock that shit off. (Veronica Cisneros)

Refusing to compromiseRelationships will sometimes require compromise and sacrifice, and when one partner flat-out refuses, it can lead to feelings of resentment and frustration.

Do not compromise who you are to meet the needs of the relationship, but there are areas in which you will need to compromise some of your wants to make things work.

What are five things that you are willing to compromise for the sake of your marriage?

Again, in no way, shape, or form am I asking you to compromise who you are to meet the needs of the relationship, but I am most definitely asking you to be aware and mindful of what things might be impacting your relationship negatively. (Veronica Cisneros)

Do you feel like you are often out in the position where you have to be “the bigger person” in arguments with your partner? What issues come up when your emotional response is left unchecked? Do you want to experience a sense of emotional freedom and not be constantly bound to feelings of anger?

In this podcast episode, I talk to you about how to manage your emotions with your husband so that you don’t feel alone and defeated. Grab your pen and paper for this episode.

Summary* “Anger is a secondary emotion” * Everything is connected * Veronica’s advice

“Anger is a secondary emotion”

How does this impact your marriage? First off, you come across as explosive not only to your husband but also to your kids. (Veronica Cisneros)

When you have not yet taken the time to address your deeper emotions, events or arguments or situations can trigger you to explode, making you seem unreasonable when in actuality you’ve been bottling things up for a long time.

There might be so many emotions that come up for you in moments of tension, such as frustration, defeat, uncertainty, and even guilt.

However, what is the deeper root of these emotions? Where have they come from? Do you process events as they happen or bottle them up?

I want you to take it even further because anger is a secondary emotion. I want you to understand what you’re really experiencing, what you’re really feeling, how this is impacting you, and how this is impacting your ability to connect with your partner. (Veronica Cisneros)

Everything is connectedYour thoughts, your emotions, and your physiological response are all connected. The way that you were raised as a child in your household will impact how you act as an adult in your own household with your partner.

If you do not check the past, you will bring it with you into the present and through into the future.

You and your partner need to work through your approaches to conflict together because it’s highly likely that both of your approaches are not healthy.

You can do your part, but he also has to do his. It is not possible for one person to fix everything: it’s a team effort.

Veronica’s adviceFirst things first, follow these simple steps by asking yourself these questions:

1 – What are the emotions that are coming up for you?

  • Resentment?
  • Frustration?
  • Overwhelmed?
  • Defeated?

2 – What are the myths and beliefs that you are telling yourself about the situation? What are the repeated narratives that you tell yourself to make sense of the situation? What are you assuming?

I want you to go there for a minute and explore it. Write it down what are the emotions and then what are the beliefs, the thoughts? As you’re writing them down, I want you to start thinking about some of the assumptions that you are making. (Veronica Cisneros)

Think about what you are telling yourself about the situation.

3 – Think about what your body feels like or experiences in these moments. These could be:

  • Tightness in the chest
  • Lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • A knot in the stomach
  • Tightness in the shoulders
  • An accelerated heart rate

4 – What are your urges and impulses telling you to do?

What do you feel like doing?

Let’s just say you did act on that urge and that impulse, does that bring you closer to your partner, or further away? (Veronica Cisneros)

By acting on those impulses, you might have won the argument, but your marriage lost. You need to remember what you want for yourself and your partner in the long run.

Do you want a lasting and loving relationship that’s able to withstand and get through tough times? Then you both need to work on yourselves.

5 – Is there another way?

Could you do the opposite of that urge? Is there another way that would work better to get you and your partner to connect and work together?

I want you to follow these steps but if you’re still like, “Shit … I need more”, well, hit me up, let’s work together! Let’s go ahead and help you and let’s take you to that next level so that you’re not stuck in this loop. (Veronica Cisneros)

In This PodcastSummary* Melissa’s new FREE program * Your vision is the very first step * Is this boot camp right for you? * Collect the data * Leveling up your mindset

Melissa’s new FREE programFrom January 2023, Melissa ran a free-testing boot camp to try out her idea.

I tested it out in January because I thought, “New year, new you!” you know, people are open to that more, and it went just incredible! (Melissa Vogel)

The course was called “Reignite” because she knew that people have the drive and urge to achieve their dreams already, it’s that sometimes motivation and consistency fall by the wayside.

The women that started in January, they built their metaphorical car by February, and then they joined my official program in March and they are kicking ass. (Melissa Vogel)

Your vision is the very first stepMelissa’s four main pillars of transformation start with the vision: you need to have an idea of who you want to become.

Who is that person? What is the vision that you have for yourself? Because, if you don’t know where you want to go, you’ll never end up anywhere. (Melissa Vogel)

It is okay if the vision that you have for yourself is changing, that’s even a good thing because it shows that you currently are changing and growing too!

However, you need to have a direction in which to travel so that you can track your progress and see how far you have come.

It’s not you telling us the vision, it’s us coming up with our own that’s so fucking powerful. (Veronica Cisneros)

Is this boot camp right for you?You need to determine your why. Do you want to make a positive change in your life? What do you want to change, and why?

It’s hard, and it can be emotional. I always say that your vision and your why, they’re like next-door neighbors they have to go hand-in-hand because why? What’s your purpose? Why even do this? … when we really start diving into it, they’re like, “Because I’m fucking miserable”. (Melissa Vogel)

Is the person who you currently are not a true reflection of your potential, or of the life that you want for yourself? The state of your current life is because you have not been taking care of “you”, and it’s about time it changed.

If you know, feel, and want that positive change, then this boot camp is for you.

Collect the dataWhen it comes down to truly understanding how your body works, and what makes you feel energized and nourished while not restricting yourself, you need to collect data.

You’ve got to spend some time understanding, “What do you currently eat now? What is your regular, normal eating day? Log that and write it on a piece of paper. (Melissa Vogel)

In the boot camp, women are taught to really understand why being aware of their food consumption is important.

Remember, with food, you have to be patient. Any radical overnight or sudden changes often lead you to do a full circle and go right back to your habits before. If you have real change, you need to take small, consistent, and sustainable steps.

Leveling up your mindsetThe quality of your self-love, self-worth, and the decisions you make mindset all come down to your mindset.

If you don’t love yourself or see your worth or your value … and just hammer down, you’re not going to show up for any of that positive change, you’re still going to get put at the bottom of your list over and over again. (Melissa Vogel)

A bad mindset can impact anybody, regardless of the level of their job or their income, or their daily routine. To get anywhere good in life, and to experience the whole goodness of life, you need to level up your mindset.

See challenges as opportunities, welcome change as growth, and know that you can cultivate enough self-love to commit to doing tough things because you know that you are worth that effort.

Are you and your husband clashing over different parenting styles? Do you sometimes feel undermined or unheard when it comes to resolving issues with your kids? How can you and your partner reconnect and get back on the same page to be a team?

In this podcast episode, I share personal stories with you, as Willie and I were once there. I share how we made it work, along with some amazing tips. Grab your pen and paper, this is an episode you want to take notes on.

Summary* The parenting tug-of-war * How we made it work * Veronica’s parenting tips

The parenting tug-of-war

Do you guys ever feel like that? Do you guys ever feel like there’s this constant tug-of-war between you and your partner where you’re parenting your kids one way and he’s parenting them the other way and it feels as if it doesn’t make sense? (Veronica Cisneros)

Do you and your partner often clash over different parenting styles?

Have you ever felt that your efforts were undermined because your partner chose to address a situation in a completely different way from the way that you did?

This is a common problem that many couples often face when they have children because they realize that they never fully discussed how they would be a team in solving or addressing the situations that would arise with raising kids.

How we made it workIn the beginning, Willie and I made many mistakes. We clashed and fought and made it worse before we realized that it could genuinely be improved.

How would I know? I wasn’t a therapist back then, and I lacked so many skills. We made it work by learning skills. (Veronica Cisneros)

Through my journey of becoming a therapist and learning these techniques to help my clients in their marriages, I decided to also try them out on my own marriage with Willie, and they worked.

If you are not a therapist yourself and you would appreciate some guidance and support in improving the relationship that you have with your partner, I highly suggest seeking out a professional, skilled therapist in your area who can guide you.

Veronica’s parenting tips

As parents, we do the best that we can with good intentions. Although there might be regrets, it’s so important that we’re on the same page. It’s important to acknowledge that we both might be struggling with our own insecurities about this process, right? (Veronica Cisneros)

1 – Think about your house rules when you were a child:

  • What were the rules that your parents set for you in your household?
  • What were the unspoken and spoken rules and consequences?
  • What types of expectations were placed upon you as a child?

2 – Ask your partner these same questions and invite them to reflect on their personal experience.

3 – Some feelings might come up for both you and your partner during this exercise. They might be uncomfortable, or difficult to address. Simply note them, write them down, and give yourself some time.

Whatever emotions come up for you, I just want you to be aware of them. I don’t want you to let them take over but just be aware like sadness? Frustration? Overwhelm? Rejection? Abandonment? (Veronica Cisneros)

4 – Identify how some of these rules you might have brought into your own home without realizing it. Do not criticize yourself! Give yourself some grace because – in your mind – these rules might have kept you safe, even if they are inherently hurtful.

5 – Now, you and your partner can have an open and honest conversation with one another about how you were both raised, what you might have accidentally brought into your current home, what you want to change, and how you can change things together.

In this process, you need to give each other grace. No judgment, no shaming. Value honesty, compassion, and care.

Most of the time we’re recreating our childhood because it’s what’s familiar, and when we don’t have the skills to do anything different, that’s exactly where we stay – we stay within the familiar! (Veronica Cisneros)

Your husband is doing the same thing as you are, it only looks different. It’s not a personal vendetta against you.

Do you feel like you are always running from one thing to the next without taking time to check in with yourself? Would you like some tools and advice on how to release frustration or angry emotions? Do you want to learn about the simple yet life-altering benefits of mediation?

In today’s podcast, I am joined by Kelly Smith. Kelly and I talk about the restorative and freeing benefits of yoga and meditation.

Meet Kelly SmithKelly Smith is a globally celebrated yoga and meditation teacher, E-RYT 500 /YACEP, founder of Yoga For You, and host of the iTunes chart-topping podcasts, Mindful In Minutes (100k weekly listens) and Meditation Mama.

Kelly believes that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to yoga and meditation and encourages her students to find their own personal practice, listen to their bodies, and find inner joy by accessing their most authentic selves and owning their power.

Kelly specializes in the non-physical limbs of yoga and is best known for her master training in meditation, restorative yoga, and yoga Nidra and her international retreats.

In This PodcastSummary* Yoga is much more than just stretching * You can practice enhancing your self-awareness * How yoga helps you manage strong emotions * How to set up a simple and sustainable meditation practice

Yoga is much more than just stretchingOften on Instagram or social media, we see yoga poses being done by flexible people doing flashy movements. It might just look like flexible stretching and spending time on a mat, but yoga is much more than just that.

There are eight different aspects to yoga, and some of these include:

  • Poses
  • Meditation
  • Breathwork
  • Concentration
  • Self-awareness

There are these eight different elements that make up the practice of yoga, so when you’re just going and doing the stretch or [just] doing the poses, we’re really only doing 1/8th of the practice. (Kelly Smith)

Yoga can also translate to “union” as in the union of all these aspects together, and also the union of the “self” that you feel connected to in the present.

With tools like meditation, self-awareness, and breathwork, you can become more attuned to your “self” in the present.

You can practice enhancing your self-awarenessIt is very easy to become and maintain a high level of busyness. It is easy to pile up the schedule and run from one thing to the next without checking in with yourself, and your life at large.

With activities and teachings like yoga, you can use it as a grounding tool to set your day up well in the morning or to collect yourself at the end of a busy one.

To me, meditation is the thing that sets the tone and prepares me for a full day of keeping those spinning plates up in the air, or it’s a thing at the end of the night where I can turn the volume down on all of the noise. (Kelly Smith)

Carving out those 10 minutes in the morning or at night (or both) to check in with yourself and make time with yourself and your personal relationship is vital to helping you create a good, balanced, and successful life.

How yoga helps you manage strong emotionsMotherhood, parenthood, or being in a long-term relationship while balancing work and personal life are all powerful things that can bring out strong emotions in any person.

Yoga and meditation are practices that you can build to build your emotional fortitude and ability to handle stressful situations without lashing out or saying something that you’d later regret.

Anger and rage, they are emotions just like anything else, and one of my favorite parts about meditation is that it gives you the space to explore your emotions in this safe capacity so you can sit and be. (Kelly Smith)

You can use your meditation space to explore tough emotions and find their deeper causes and release them, instead of carrying that frustration around until it explodes.

How to set up a simple and sustainable meditation practice1 – Commit to 10 minutes a day: meditating between 8 to 12 minutes a day is enough to receive the physical, mental, and emotional benefits.

2 – Try 10 minutes in the morning or 10 minutes in the evening: don’t work with good intentions. Plan 10 minutes in your schedule and pick either to do them in the morning or the evening.

3 – Pick a focus: gently focus on your breath, on noticing and clearing your thoughts, or on how your body feels. As a beginner, consider following a guided meditation like Mindful in Minutes or Molly Loves Mornings.

Meditation is just single-pointed concentration, so focusing your mental power on one thing what I really recommend is just listening to a guided meditation. (Kelly Smith)

Are you listening to your body and your well-being? Can practicing gratitude soothe a fast-paced Type A approach to life? How do you define what true fulfillment looks like?

In today’s podcast, I am joined by Holly Bertone. Holly and I talk about the importance of listening to your body and the necessity of it.

Meet Holly BertoneHolly Bertone, PMP, CNHP is a #1 Amazon.com bestselling author, sought-after speaker, and gratitude coach. As a breast cancer and autoimmune survivor, she helps women view their diagnosis as a gift so that they can unwrap resilience to build fortitude with gratitude.

Holly spent 25 years rising through the ranks of consulting and federal
government service before her failing health shattered her corporate
dreams. Since then, she has leaned into her path of true purpose, as the
President and CEO of Pink Fortitude and founder of Fortitude.Academy,
by helping women go from being Grumpy Worriers to Grateful Warriors.
She is a Project Management Professional (PMP), holds a Masters Degree
from Johns Hopkins University, and is a Certified Natural Health Coach.

Holly is married to a retired Green Beret, is a Stepmother to an Eagle Scout, Pug mamma, and lives in Alexandria, VA.

In This PodcastSummary* You need to listen * Rock bottom is a cry for change * How do you define success and happiness? * Gratitude builds fortitude

You need to listen

I didn’t want cancer to change anything, so I kept running a million miles an hour. So, in addition to my life with a high-powered management job with stress, being athletic, being a PTA mom, a new fiancée, and a new step-mother … I was now adding cancer treatment to my week … already full schedule. (Holly Bertone)

When you are driven, successful, and determined to be a great partner and mother for your family and loved ones, you might rarely let anything get in your way.

You might even take setbacks as opportunities to push harder and go further, even when those setbacks are actually warning signals from your health that are asking you to slow down, or to make a change.

My body was screaming because I didn’t listen to the quieter voices … so after treatment ended, I kept getting sicker. (Holly Bertone)

Rock bottom is a cry for changeIf you constantly ignore little signals from your physical, mental, or emotional health and just keep pushing forward no matter what, you might be injuring yourself more than you realize.

My health got so bad over the years that in 2017 I was forced to resign. (Holly Bertone)

Don’t wait too long before you make a positive and sustainable change in your life because at the end of the day, everything you do depends on your health.

My health had hit rock bottom three times at that point. That was the third time, and again … you hear the whispers, you hear the screams yet I kept going. I did not know how to stop until my body made me. Until my body made me so sick that I couldn’t even move, I couldn’t function, I couldn’t get out of bed. (Holly Bertone)

How do you define success and happiness? What do you think will bring you success, fulfillment, and happiness? What do you think your life has to look like to feel whole?

Most importantly: have you set these definitions, or are you following along with what other people have said your life “should” look like for you to feel satisfaction?

I thought that that’s what we were supposed to do that’s the path, that’s the rules, that’s what we were supposed to do. (Holly Bertone)

There is a whole different purpose in life, and you can get to decide how you want to experience it and live it.

If you are living your life for other people’s expectations, then you are setting yourself up for a life of struggle, because it is nearly impossible – and not truly fulfilling – to define yourself with other people’s definitions.

It took years after rock-bottom number three to realize that there’s a whole different purpose in life and chasing after the high stress is not part of it. (Holly Bertone)

Gratitude builds fortitude

Gratitude builds fortitude. Gratitude actually builds mental strength. (Holly Bertone)

Practicing gratitude is an important aspect of building a fulfilled and truly peaceful life even through difficult times – especially through difficult times – because gratitude will help you to remember and appreciate what you do have instead of what you don’t.

Gratitude also extends as a practice of self-love and value.

You are worthy. You are worthy of gratitude, you are worthy of love, you are worthy of loving yourself. You are worthy, period, and gratitude I call it the “gateway drug” because it opens the door to so many things. (Holly Bertone)

Gratitude can help to center you in the present moment. Instead of worrying about the past or the future, gratitude grounds you in the here and now by reminding you of all the good things that you have in your life.

Connect with Shaelene on Instagram, and listen to her podcast here.

In This PodcastSummary* What is DBT? * How to get in control of your emotions * What contributes to the source of tension? * Realize that you get to make a choice

What is DBT?DBT stands for dialectical behavioral therapy.

It’s an evidence-based treatment, which means there’s a lot of research out there to support that it works, and … it actually works in treating BPD directly. (Shaelene Kite)

Everyone exhibits behaviors that are either helpful or unhelpful.

These could be habits, reactions, or ways of dealing with events like stress or surprise, or discomfort. Even though these reactions or behaviors may seem hard-wired, they’re not, and with therapy and some effort, they can be changed.

DBT helps people to change their behaviors and to target behaviors that are causing more problems, decrease those, and replace them with more skillful, adapted behaviors that benefit you in the long run. (Shaelene Kite)

How to get in control of your emotions1 – Cultivate your awareness to notice when the pattern that you want to change is happening: if there is something that you often do when emotions are high that you want to change, you first need to practice noticing that moment.

The first step to change is always awareness, and practicing how to become aware of and isolate that moment or that reaction whenever it arises.

2 – Identify the physical sensations that you are feeling at that moment: what does your body feel like? What is happening to your breathing, your heart rate, and your voice?

3 – Work on your expectations: what are your expectations for yourself and for the person whom you are interacting with?

4 – Learn to tolerate discomfort: how can you learn to sit with a difficult emotion and work through it intentionally instead of lashing out the moment you feel an uncomfortable emotion?

Reality acceptance is about doing just that, it’s helping us to accept reality just as it is without fighting it and if you think of yourself in a moment when you’re losing your shit, you’re not accepting reality, right? You’re fighting against whatever it is. (Shaelene Kite)

5 – Recognize that there is truth on both sides: no one is ever totally right or totally wrong because often there is truth on both sides, and both people feel entitled to defend their truth, especially when they feel that their partner is not listening to them.

Truth is something that’s relative, it’s still subjective. There are certain things that we can argue over, but there’s always going to be another side to something. (Shaelene Kite)

What contributes to the source of tension? You and your partner can talk all day about what is important and what you both want to change, but communication without action doesn’t yield many results.

If a pattern is continually repeated, and you’ve tried communicating about it but it still keeps happening, then you need to go deeper.

What is contributing to the source of this tension? Which behaviors are keeping this pattern alive?

More importantly, how do you want to feel about yourself?

Even if you are right, even if it is valid that you’re like a 20 out of 10 in anger … you also want to think about like, “How do I want to feel about myself after?” (Shaelene Kite)

What your relationship looks like – whether there are lots of small problems or big, unending problems – will dictate how you decide to move forward.

Realize that you get to make a choice

We actually get to make a choice, like, we have that option. It doesn’t feel like we have that option. (Veronica Cisneros)

You need to cultivate an awareness of who you are, and who you want to be. At which point would this tension be too much?

By accepting the situation, you are not giving the person a free pass. You are making space for yourself and your peace amid a situation that can be changed.

There’s an opportunity for something to happen differently, but that can’t come without looking at it and having awareness of [asking], “Let me see what I can change first to see if I can influence it and see if something will shift there.” (Shaelene Kite)

What is the secret to a happy, healing, and lasting marriage? How can you tell the difference between actions that come from unresolved trauma or from peace? Is there a change that you would like to make to improve your relationship?

In this reverse podcast episode, I speak with Lucy Coutinho and Nihal Horne about how to maintain your happily ever after and the secret to a healthy marriage.

Summary* How to tell if you’re operating from a trauma response * Don’t shrug off the “bad seasons” * Say something! * The secret to a lasting, happy, and healthy marriage

How to tell if you’re operating from a trauma responseIt can be very difficult at first to pinpoint when you are acting out of a trauma response, especially generational trauma, as it will feel familiar.

Doing something new, even if it’s the “right” thing or the thing that you really want to do, will feel strange.

If you aren’t careful, you might treat the new course of action as dangerous while sticking to the old dangerous route because of the familiarity which creates a feeling of safety.

When you start developing that realization that is when you start educating yourself, and when you start being exposed to different norms. (Veronica Cisneros)

Don’t shrug off the “bad seasons”If you and your partner are often going through “bad patches” or “bad seasons”, you may want to look into couples’ therapy.

Of course, the occasional rough patch is going to happen, but if the connection of your relationship is being strained through constant struggles, then you might need to put the pride aside and make a stand for your marriage.

This right here, this right here is your red flag. If you’ve been looking for red flags, this lack of connection right here is your red flag, and it’s time for you to get help. (Veronica Cisneros)

If you are often stuck in the same cycle of conflict with your partner, seeking professional help may be the tool that you need to change the pattern – especially if you don’t know what the next step to take is.

Say something! You do not have to suffer alone, and likely if you are, then your partner is too. You do not have to feel alone and disconnected in your marriage.

Be brave, step up, and say something.

I know you’re scared … I’ve been there, and I’m here to tell you that there’s so much healing when we’re able to validate what we’re experiencing at that moment. (Veronica Cisneros)

CBT – cognitive behavioral therapy – is a great tool to use in your therapist with a professional because it helps you to become aware of your thought, and the words that you use, and intentionally shift them.

When somebody teaches you, “What a minute, you’re actually catastrophizing or … you’re actually overgeneralizing … let’s break that down. What’s happening for you in your body?” (Veronica Cisneros)

Your thoughts are not always true. You can change them, and therefore change the way that you think and behave in different situations. Therefore, you can then respond to the situation, instead of blinding just reacting to it.

The secret to a lasting, happy, and healthy marriageBe the best of friends with your partner! You both need to love, support, and respect one another as individuals as you are while sharing the life that you have built together.

Do you feel frustrated with your partner not accessing their potential? Are you making excuses for your partner – and for yourself? What is actually holding you back from your transformation? In today’s podcast, we are joined by Kute Blackson. Kute is an inspirational speaker and transformational teacher. On this podcast, we talk all about ‘How do I get my Husband to change’.

Meet Kute BlacksonKute Blackson, transformational speaker and national best-selling author of You.Are.The.One. and his new book, The Magic of Surrender, published by Penguin Random House.

His unique lineage lay the foundation for his approach to breaking down barriers and unlocking an individual’s true gifts and greatness.

Connect with Kute on the website, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In This PodcastSummary* What keeps you back from accessing your transformation? * What are you pretending not to know? * Identify the red flags * How do I get my husband to change?

What keeps you back from accessing your transformation?

I’ve worked with thousands of people from all walks of life and I’ve seen that one of the things that stop us from truly transforming are all the ways that we lie to ourselves. (Kute Blackson)

You might be one of the biggest things that are holding you back from experiencing the life that you want to live. How? Because you might be lying to yourself. From childhood, people learn to make themselves appealing and pleasing to those around them because they want to be loved and accepted by the community. However, they often abandon their true selves to feel this sense of acceptance.

We are constantly lying to ourselves about who we are and what we want because the fear is … “if you know who I really am then maybe you won’t love me”. We’re conditioned from childhood to pretend to be people who we are not to get love, validation, and approval from parents and those around us in the world. (Kute Blackson)

The only way that you can transform your life is to be truly yourself and to step into your authenticity. Then people will see you for you, and those that leave were not meant for you, and those that love you and accept you are your real community. So, what keeps you back from experiencing this is the lies that you tell yourself.

The ego plays a self-protective game of confusion of, “I don’t really know what to do, I don’t really know if this relationship is right, or I don’t really know what my purpose is” … deep down, we know it. We’re just afraid, and we’re kind of playing this game of confusion. (Kute Blackson)

Take the pressure off of yourself and just sit with the simple but genuine truth. Then, you open yourself up to change, and your inevitable transformation.

What are you pretending not to know?Sit with the truth that you are running away from. You do not have to take action right away, but just sit with it, and be present with yourself in that honesty.

The truth is what sets us free. So, what lies are you telling yourself? What lies are you pretending to not know? What is it costing you? (Kute Blackson)

You might be keeping yourself stuck by pretending not to notice the pain you feel. This could be emotional pain, spiritual suffering, or anything else. This is a signal that something in your life is not in alignment. Sit with the truth. It’s simple, but it’s not easy – although, that transformation is fully possible and available to you once you allow it to be.

Identify the red flagsHow do you even begin to understand the layers of your life? How would you even start to look for the potential red flags that can show you where – in your life – you need to give your attention to? The first red flag that you need to look out for is realizing that you have everything you thought you wanted, and you’re still feeling depressed, unfulfilled, or lost. The second red flag is when you notice that you are continuously attracting the same type of situations, relationships, and people into your life over and over again, even when you say you don’t want them.

You could keep pointing the finger out there at the world, and those people and those situations, but at some point, you start seeing that the common denominator is you. At some point, you start to see that the only way to shift your experience and attract something different is to shift yourself, to heal yourself, to transform yourself. (Kute Blackson)

Meet these answers – these parts of yourself – with loving understanding.

How do I get my husband to change?1 – Stop trying to change your husband. Your job is not to change your husband, it is to change yourself.

Relationship is a mirror. In a relationship, you attract to you … you attract to you a man, a person that really is a mirror manifestation of your consciousness in that particular moment in time. (Kute Blackson)

The mirror doesn’t lie! The person that you are in a relationship with is a manifestation of your relationship with yourself because they reflect parts of yourself that you most need to heal.

Ask yourself: do you like what you see? If the answer’s, “Kind of, sort of … well, no,” don’t argue with the mirror. Don’t blame, and don’t point the finger. Most of us try to change the mirror and the reflection. (Kute Blackson)

2 – Take responsibility – fully – for yourself, for your reflection, for transforming and changing yourself. 3 – Ask yourself: what is my husband reflecting me about myself? You attracted this partner for a reason. What is your soul seeking to learn?

Don’t tell your man what to do. Don’t direct him on what to do. Instead, you heal yourself, transform, and become as an expanded and inspiring and feminine being you can, and that will hopefully inspire him to rise up and give in to his potential … if he loves you, if he’s sensible, he’ll realize, “Wow, if I want this to work, I need to up my game.” (Kute Blackson)

Have you and your partner checked out? Do you want to make a real change? Are you ready to reignite the spark in your marriage to have fun and grow together?

In this podcast episode, I talk about a personal story about Willie and myself. I share some tips and advice on what makes a successful marriage, and how your past could be showing up in your relationship today.

Summary* Is defensiveness present in your marriage? * Invest in your friendship * How to establish your roadmap to a successful relationship

Is defensiveness present in your marriage?

It became this defensive match of who did more, and I wasn’t ready to go ahead and actually hear what my husband was communicating. I wasn’t ready to hear it because I felt like I was being attached. (Veronica Cisneros)

Our marriage was one month away from divorce before we decided to truly give it a shot and make things work.

It took years for us to figure out our way back together, and our way going forward, and in the beginning, it was tough. We both had unresolved issues, from ourselves and with one another, that we had to openly and authentically communicate to heal.

Keeping score is like a defense against getting – or feeling – hurt by our partners.

I had literally built up this wall because that was my form of protection and as long as I had that form of protection, then I was “fine”, there was no way he would be able to hurt me emotionally. We did that over and over again. (Veronica Cisneros)

Invest in your friendshipOne of the greatest ways to protect, ensure, nurture, and develop your marriage is to invest in your friendship with your partner. You need to be friends, just not partners.

You need to want to be together because you respect and like them, and not just because you are married.

When did you stop having fun together? When did the household chores, the kids, the schedule … when did that take over? And why? (Veronica Cisneros)

How to establish your roadmap to a successful relationship1 – Identify the issues that you are bringing into the relationship: most people do not hold themselves accountable for their actions or behaviors, and that can be a huge cause for resentment in marriages.

You need to spend some time – both of you – to figure out what needs attention in yourselves so that you can be aware of them, and work on them.

When you neglect to assume responsibility for your actions, you are putting your marriage at risk. So, it’s time to do something different. (Veronica Cisneros)

2 – Go back to the beginning when it was fun: what did you two often do together that you enjoyed? What has stopped you from doing them? Are you refusing to do them? Can you add those activities back into your lives?

3 – Recognize each other’s differences: celebrate your differences! Respect and love them, because they ultimately make up the person that you want to be with.

Find common ground, discuss your non-negotiables, and let the differences be without judgment.

Being able to understand your partner’s perspective is truly going to help you establish trust. (Veronica Cisneros)

4 – Recognize that you both lack skills: both you and your partner can learn to do better. No one is born knowing how to create a great marriage because a happy and healthy marriage comes from doing intentional work through building good skills like communication, patience, respect, and honesty.

5 – Consider your different backgrounds: what did you both experience growing up? How is your past showing up in your marriage?

6 – Understand the value of intimacy: what does sex represent to you and him? What were you both taught about sex? What are your beliefs about it?

Can you feel that your marriage has more to offer both you and your partner? Has the connection between you two dimmed or faded? How can you find the spark and both be motivated to build a loving and fulfilling marriage? I am so excited to share this podcast episode with you.

I am joined by my Husband, Willie. We dive deep into this podcast and talk about getting your husband more involved in fixing your marriage.

Summary* Outline the situation * “How did we get here?” * Own your parts * Come to the retreat!

Outline the situationMany men can struggle with identifying that there is a problem that they cannot solve because they pride themselves on being the provider, and on being the fixer.

It can be difficult for men to admit or agree to get help because, for them, it might feel like a failure. That pride can blind them, and actually create the very thing that they fear the most.

Sometimes because of the amount of pride that, I would say, a lot of men have, because of this feeling of having to have it all together and not wanting to own our faults is that it may be the awakening of the spouse telling their husband, “I’m telling you that if we don’t do this, I’m considering possibly leaving you.” (Willie Cisneros)

In extreme cases, it may take the spouse telling their husband that they’re going to leave unless they change up their act to spark a change. However, it doesn’t have to get to that point.

“How did we get here?”Reestablish your connection. How did it all start? Where, when, and how did your love for one another begin? And when and how did it start to change?

You may both be clearly suffering in the marriage, with hopes of returning to each other and bringing it all around. You can come together on that simple desire: let’s reconnect.

Ask yourself and say to one another:

  • How did we get here?
  • How did we lose the passion and intimacy that we shared?
  • I miss us, and I feel like something is missing from where we are now

The love is there. The love is definitely there, but it’s kind of like this feeling of shame, and this feeling of loss, yes, they did lose their best friend, and shame because they also stopped being their partner’s best friend. (Veronica Cisneros)

Own your partsEither by yourselves, alone or in the neutrality of a room with a therapist, you and your spouse need to have a completely honest and open conversation – without judgment!

Use “I” statements, not “you” statements. Speak completely and fully from your perspective. How do you feel? What do you desire? What is the dream you want?

Both of you have to own some part of the failure in – or where you’re at at this moment – your marriage. You both have to own your part in it saying, “This is where we used to be, this is where I want to be”. (Willie Cisneros)

Come to the retreat! The retreat – with a special guest, Willie! – is going to be focused on helping you and your spouse reconnect and reinfuse your marriage with intention, connection, and love.

It’s not going to be easy: you will be challenged and encouraged to dig deep and to make it work because that’s why you’re there.

At this retreat, we will be laser-focused on identifying what those past pains are for you specifically. Once you’re able to identify [them], you’re also going to be taught how to heal them because whether you believe it or not, they’re impacting your marriage. (Veronica Cisneros)

These conversations need to be had so that you can start connecting and reconnecting with one another.

Storing up resentment can damage your connection if left unattended. Instead of walking on eggshells to avoid the landmines, let’s learn how to address the conversation. (Veronica Cisneros)

Do you and your partner struggle with parenting differences? Is it possible to work through and release resentment? Do you want to get back to loving your husband as your best friend? Let me re-introduce myself! The website has had a facelift, and what better way for you to get to know me is by me answering your questions! So here goes!

In this podcast I will be answering all your questions on Communication, Parenting Styles, Resentment and so much more.

Summary* How to talk without fighting * Navigating different parenting styles * Is it possible to only have to ask once? * How to get back to loving on one another * How to work through resentment

How to talk without fightingWhen you and your partner need to discuss something important that you both care about, maybe in different ways, it can be easy for things to get heated when you both feel like you aren’t being listened to.

Anytime that we start an argument or start a discussion, and it started harshly, recent studies show that it has a 96% chance that the conversation is going to go south very quickly! (Veronica Cisneros)

So, how you start the conversation is important. Pay attention to where you are emotionally before you start talking because if your emotions are high then that conversation won’t go anywhere.

You have the ability to self-regulate – the problem is that you don’t, because you have not learned how to take full control of your emotions, this is why you’re blowing up, but you’re blowing up on the wrong person. (Veronica Cisneros)

You both need to take time to ground yourself and be calm before you talk about an important issue.

Navigating different parenting stylesown children together to raise.

Listen to my episode The 5 Common Mistakes Couples Make When Parenting because I cover all there is to know about navigating a difference in parenting approaches.

You and your husband should consider:

  • What are your non-negotiables?
  • What are you flexible on?
  • What did you learn about the roles of a mother and a father growing up in your childhood homes?

If you want to learn how to agree on a parenting style, then find out what this looks like for both of you. (Veronica Cisneros)

Neither you nor your husband can show up as the best mother and father you can be for your kids without you supporting one another.

Is it possible to only have to ask once?Yes, it is possible! But you might need to ask more than once in the beginning.

Consider the patterns of your relationship. How do you approach him? Do you end up redoing the task after he’s done it? What usually happens?

You’re not setting the boundary, and you’re basically teaching your husband; “I’m going to ask you and then I’m going to do it, so don’t worry about doing it.”, it doesn’t work. (Veronica Cisneros)

You need to set boundaries with him – and yourself – and stick to them.

Also, consider opening up an honest and open conversation. Use the script:

“I’ve noticed that whenever I … I’m met with kickback, and I’m not sure what this is …”

How to get back to loving on one anotherWhen couples have been stuck in unhealthy patterns for so long, things can become toxic. Luckily, it is possible to reverse and get out of this situation.

Ask yourself: how is this toxicity benefitting you? How has it served you? Or give you excuses or protect you from taking accountability or responsibility?

Eventually, you won’t need that anymore. Eventually, you’ll remove that wall of toxicity … and both meet in the middle and join hands … but you will both connect again because you will both have worked on it and understood it. (Veronica Cisneros)

Identify where the toxicity is present, and write it down. Isolate it. Then look behind it, and what it is stopping you from doing.

Listen to my podcast episode The Five Common Mistakes Couples Make When They Argue to get some deeper insight.

How to work through resentmentWhen did you lose your best friend?

When did you stop being his best friend?

When did you start keeping score? Why are you keeping score?

Resentment builds and builds over time; it doesn’t develop all at once. It is the silent killer of relationships, unless you notice it, and work backward, and reset the way forward.

What is keeping you from recommitting to each other and working on the relationship together? (Veronica Cisneros)

Listen to my podcast Keeping Score – How to Work Through Resentment for more tips and information.

Arguments are bound to happen, but they do not have to turn ugly and build that resentment. So, you can learn how to disagree with love and compassion, and still solve problems.

Listen to my episode How to Have Arguments Without Hurting One Another.

Do you ask for what you want and what you need? Are you stuck on a dealbreaker with your partner? Why must you aim for interdependence to create genuine intimacy? Is changing for the better in a marriage really possible?

In today’s podcast, we are joined by Katy Blommer. Katy and I talk about how we didn’t notice the red flags when it came to divorce. Katy shares her own story.

Meet Katy BlommerKaty Blommer is the founder of Women’s Best Life University. She provides women with the life-changing education needed to stop feeling overwhelmed and exhausted and start living their best lives!

Katy started WBLU after going on her own 12-year journey learning to live her best life. Her journey included overcoming terrible body image issues; learning how to master consistent healthy habits; climbing the corporate ladder to a multiple six-figure income, navigating mom guilt while working a stressful, 50-60 hour weeks; overcoming serious marriage issues, and more.

After spending 12 years and thousands of dollars on therapists, trainers, books, classes, etc. – Katy realized that what we learn growing up as girls and young women is all so backward and really sets us up for a life of people pleasing, guilt, taking care of everyone but ourselves, and not being brave enough to design and live the life we truly want.

Connect with Katy on her LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram, or listen to her Podcast here.

In This PodcastSummary* Is it a dealbreaker or not? * Aim for interdependence * Change is real and possible * Confidence and attraction go both ways

Is it a dealbreaker or not?If you are at a place in your marriage where you and your partner have tried everything, or you have tried at least more than five times in five different ways to connect with them about solving the problem, then you need to make a choice.

You have to decide if it’s a dealbreaker for you, the thing that you need to change. You have to decide if it’s a dealbreaker or not. If you decide that it is a dealbreaker, then you have to give an ultimatum, and then leave. (Katy Blommer)

If this issue that you are facing with your partner is a dealbreaker for you, then you need to let them know and give them an ultimatum.

If they still are not able or are not willing to make the necessary changes, then you need to respect and love yourself enough to leave.

However, if it’s not a dealbreaker, then you need to drop it. If they’re not going to change, then you need to stop bringing it up in the hopes that they will, if it’s not that important to you.

Aim for interdependenceYou and your partner are individuals. You are both your own people with your personal lives that you share with one another and build around each other, but fundamentally, you are still your own person. That is a good thing!

It really is about doing the work to get there, and it’s not easy, but it is so worth it. When you get there, it’s life-changing, and it’s relationship-changing. (Katy Blommer)

If you want to have independence and a healthy relationship that is not running on desperation and codependency, then you need to build interdependence.

Change is real and possible

I am not exaggerating; from that day forward, he never looked back … when I say he never looked back, what I mean is that he never stopped trying. (Katy Blommer)

Katy and her husband went through two tough years of intensive couples’ therapy, with weekly sessions, to learn and practice how they wanted to make changes with one another going forward.

We still have challenges and things we have to work through and now we have tools and what we learned through therapy was just completely life-changing. It was a rollercoaster over those two years, but he never went back. (Katy Blommer)

They both learned how to express their needs, how to properly meet them with themselves and for one another, and to see one another as their partner, but also as the individuals that they inherently are.

Confidence and attraction go both ways

When we start to value ourselves enough to stop doing all of the things, I think we become more attractive to them because we’re more confident. Men are attracted to women who love themselves and are confident about themselves but when we’re doing all of the things all of the time, we’re exhausted, and we don’t love ourselves. (Katy Blommer)

When you know your worth and have self-respect, you will not be running after everybody and making sure that life is somehow perfect. You know that you can provide, love, and support without completely putting yourself on the sideline.

This belief and knowing of your worth make you attractive – it shows that you know that you, your time, and your energy are valuable.

Can you learn to distinguish between what feels nearly impossible to do and what simply feels foreign and new to you? Are you actually enjoying your life? Who is in charge of your life?

Change starts with you, let’s get into it.

In this reverse podcast episode, I am joined by my friend, Melissa Vogel from Bomb Mom Podcast. Join us as we dive into some questions you have and common topics that come up. Grab a pen and paper, because you will definitely want to take notes along the way.

Summary* What have you been conditioned to believe? * Work to want, not to need * What to do when your partner is emotionally flooded * Are you withholding reality from your family?

What have you been conditioned to believe?

We take a great deal of pride in doing so many things for our kids. I want to say it’s part of us, it’s part of that learned behavior and it’s also a part of that generational trauma. (Veronica Cisneros)

Question things. Not everything that is how it is in life is supposed to be that way or is in its optimal space. People inherit trauma and poor habits and social behaviors from their parents.

So much of what we do is learned, and luckily, it can be unlearned.

However, first, you need to recognize it, isolate it, and change it. You need to find where you end and it begins, or how it influences you, and work in that space.

I want you guys to think about your kids and what you’re teaching your kids right now. (Veronica Cisneros)

You teach your kids better life skills when you embody self-love, self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-compassion. No matter what you tell your kids, they will learn from your actions.

Work to want, not to needOf course, there will be times in life when you do need people for support and guidance and to have your back.

However, most of the time, you have to be there for yourself.

I want to be with you. I’m not with you because I need you, I don’t need you, just like you don’t need me, but I want to be with you. I want to enjoy you. (Veronica Cisneros)

When you are able to take care of yourself – for the majority of the time – then you can spend time with your partner because you want to, not because you need to.

Then you can experience an intimacy that is not fixed up with desperation. You can see and appreciate them for who they are, and they can do the same for you.

What to do when your partner is emotionally flooded* Give them 20 minutes to calm down and gather their thoughts * Check yourself as well to see how you are feeling before you re-enter the conversation with them

If you’re not in the space where you’re able to problem-solve then stay quiet, walk the hell out of the room, and get your emotions under control, make sure you’re able to regulate them so that you’re able to come back and have an honest conversation without allowing all of your emotions to get in the way. (Veronica Cisneros)

  • Do not take it personally
  • If you are getting defensive then you need to take a break

Are you withholding reality from your family? As a mother, of course, your first instinct is to love, protect, and support your children and your partner.

I want you to be aware of how you protect your husband from your kids, and how you refuse to allow your kids to see the father he really is. (Veronica Cisneros)

However, are there unhealthy patterns or behaviors that need to change that you are hiding from your partner, or from your kids? Are you trying to control reality so that they do not experience pain?

It is much healthier, better, and more effective to seek professional help and therapy than for you to try to do it alone because it is not possible to do it alone, without harming yourself mentally and emotionally.

You love your Husband, he is great at work and helps you when needed but you’re feeling like you are carrying all the weight in your marriage. Whenever you and your husband argue, it feels like you are fighting against each other, trying to prove who is right and who is wrong. You wish you could reconnect with your husband after repeated arguments, right?

Here is the big question: Does it feel like you have lost your best friend?

In this podcast episode, I share a personal story of mine, about an argument Willie and I have. I also help you understand the difference between perpetual and solvable arguments and how to go about repairing the connection when these arguments happen.

Summary* Are your arguments perpetual? * Figure out what type of argument you’re having * Arguments disguised as insecurities * Repair attempts

Are your arguments perpetual? It is expected to have arguments in a relationship. You and your partner are two different people, so naturally, you will disagree on some things.

However, not every disagreement needs to turn into a huge fight. 69% of arguments that couples have are perpetual and only 31% are solvable.

A perpetual argument is something that we’re never going to solve. It is unsolvable. Gottman says that they’re rooted in differences in personality styles, beliefs, and values. (Veronica Cisneros)

Have you come to realize that some arguments that you often have with your partner are not solvable? This is not bad. Some things you will need to agree to disagree on, with respect and love for one another.

Of course, if it’s a moral or ethical issue, that’s something different from a standard couple’s spat.

Figure out what type of argument you’re havingIs your argument solvable or perpetual? If it’s solvable, it’s usually situation-based.

It is something that has happened at that moment that may not happen again and can be resolved by taking an action or working together.

However, if your arguments are mostly perpetual, you both need to do something different.

A lot of us get so stuck in proving our partner wrong and getting them to see it our way that it just limits your ability to truly connect. It completely limits your ability to truly connect and move forward. (Veronica Cisneros)

Identify the topic of what you and your partner are perpetually arguing over because it exposes an insecurity that needs to be given time, attention, and care.

Arguments disguised as insecuritiesMost perpetual arguments stem from unresolved or unaddressed insecurities in each partner.

Perpetual arguments expose something that you haven’t necessarily healed and that is what’s keeping you guys stuck in gridlock, because it’s a problem you haven’t solved, and on top of that, it’s exposing all of these emotions that you’re not ready to work on or not willing to change. (Veronica Cisneros)

This is where doing your own work becomes important. You need to sit with yourself and observe your triggers when they come up because they can guide you to places within yourself that probably need some more love and attention.

Of course, it is totally okay to seek professional help if you need or want some assistance with that.

It doesn’t mean that your marriage is on the rocks! In fact, seeing a couple’s therapist is a great way to strengthen your marriage and deepen your connection with your partner.

Repair attempts* “Is there any way I can start over again? I said that wrong” * “My part of the problem is …” * “I might be wrong here, but what I think you mean is … did I understand you correctly?” * “Tell me what you are hearing me say right now. Maybe I am not explaining myself in the best way possible”

How are you attempting to repair the argument? Not solve it, but repair the connection with you.

Listen for the repair attempts because that is when the arguments start to shift. When you let your guard down, your partner will start to let their guard down.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you needed to place all your trust in your partner and just let go?

In which moments do you disconnect from your partner? Have you struggled with trust in the past or the present? How do you get back to your partner being your best friend and not the enemy?

In this podcast episode, I share a story with you about where I thought we were in danger. I had to let go and trust that Willie had it under control. In this podcast episode, I talk all about why you are not connecting with your partner and how to change it. Grab some pen and paper, you have some work to do.

Summary* What are your patterns? * Where did your trust go? * Why do you keep score?

What are your patterns?

What do your patterns look like with regard to your relationship with your partner? How are you constantly trying to control the situation? (Veronica Cisneros)

Think about the subtle undercurrents of your relationship – if there are any – with your partner. Do you assume they do something, and then respond with another assumption?

If you feel that they start to ignore you or stop being your friend, do you do the same to them without addressing it?

Where did your trust go?Continue to think back on your patterns. Where did you learn about this behavior? Where did you learn to mimic and give back what you receive, creating a never-ending cycle?

What happened in your childhood and how did you make sense of it? What lessons did you take from your childhood into adulthood?

I created this thought in my head, this core belief that I couldn’t trust anybody, and so I made myself responsible for everyone, and because I felt that I was responsible for everyone, if I failed, then I felt that I was unworthy. (Veronica Cisneros)

When did you stop trusting? Because that is when you start to disconnect, and that is when you try to change your partner into doing what you need them to do for you to feel like you are in control.

Why do you keep score? When you lose trust in your partner, you begin to control them and their actions, and when you do that, you may start to keep score of all the things that they did “wrong” when you weren’t there to tell them how to do it.

When you keep score, you find reasons not to connect with your partner.

For me, it was truly letting go and I can’t tell you that it just happened one time, it happened several times, but what I realized was that those moments that I get to spend with Willie are invaluable because he 1000% has my back. (Veronica Cisneros)

Remember, your partner is your best friend! They are not your enemy. It is you and them against the problem.

Think about how you both come from different backgrounds.

Have an open conversation about how you both deal with the same problem in different ways. This encourages compassion for each other and helps you to learn how you can work together instead of against each other in moments of tension.

New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, and you know what that means…Resolutions. Do you make them and do you keep them? What about as a couple, have you thought of making couples’ resolutions? Would you create a dream board with your partner for the new year? What is something that you want to develop as a couple?

In this podcast episode, I m joined by my husband, Willie. We talk all about setting couples’ new year’s resolutions and we share some of our own. We also share some great advice for couples. Happy Holiday!

Summary* What does a new year’s resolution mean to you? * Create your dream board! * Gottman’s advice for couples

What does a new year’s resolution mean to you?

A new year’s resolution is often a self-made promise to an outcome or something positive of what you want to renew within yourself, something that you want to seek change in. (Willie Cisneros)

Resolutions are often commitments that you make to do things differently in a new year.

You can also think of them as promises that you make with yourself in pursuit of creating the life that you want to live.

Create your dream board!Grab your husband, a notepad, and a pen! You’re going to create a couple’s new year’s resolution dream board. Below will be some general tips but also set aside some time to create some of your own.

Veronica and Willie’s resolutions:

  • To commit to a date night every Tuesday

If for whatever reason, like I have to cancel or if you have to cancel, that person that has to reschedule has to be in charge of daycare as well as the plans. (Veronica Cisneros)

  • Don’t sweat the small stuff because it’s not worth making every disagreement an argument
  • Go on quarterly getaways alone as a couple
  • Make more time for sex and try something new in the bedroom
  • Work out together

When I’m watching you work out, it’s just motivating. You’re in it, I’m in it, and we’re doing something productive together. It’s both of us taking a step toward change but it’s also our own personal journey. (Veronica Cisneros)

  • A 20-minute stress-reducing conversation once a day with your partner
  • Make out each time we greet or say goodbye to each other – with tongue!

That was one of the things I had said to myself a long time ago, was, “I don’t want there to be a day that goes by where I leave and the last moment that I had to see you, I left it on bad terms or we were upset”, because we don’t know when our time’s going to be gone. (Willie Cisneros)

  • Let go of old grudges or disagreements

Gottman’s advice for couplesThe magic six hours:

1 – When saying goodbye, spend two minutes a day, five days a week, developing a ritual to make parting extra special

2 – Spend 20 minutes a day having a stress-reducing conversation at the end of each work day, five days a week

3 – Communicate appreciation for your partner, five minutes a day, seven days a week

4 – Spend five minutes a day touching, kissing, or holding your partner, and do this seven days a week

5 – Go on date nights that last a minimum of two hours once a week

6 – Meet for one hour a week to talk about your relationship

You want to continue to be good with your partner? Do you want your kids to have parents when they grow up? Both parents when they grow up? Then, hell yes! Investing six hours a week in your marriage is important! (Veronica Cisneros)

Have you and your partner had issues in the bedroom? How do your and your husband’s body change as you both age? Do you need to have the bedroom talk with your husband?

I had so many aha moments in this episode and it is really helpful. You don’t want to miss this episode, you will learn all about what it takes for men to have optimal sexual performance.

His research into men’s sexual health lead him to create the Men’s Sexual Performance Scale and the revolutionary ESEIS 25 sexual health program along with 2 books “How To Be A Better Lover In 30 Days or Less” and “Go Hard”.

In This PodcastSummary* Consider the environment * Patriarchal standards hurt men * Foreplay is for men too * Maintaining the momentum in the bedroom * How to have the bedroom talk with your partner

Consider the environmentThe food that you eat, how much your lifestyle has you in front of electronics or sitting down, how frequently or infrequently you stress about things, and what you do to unwind – these all impact your physical and mental health.

We’re in an artificial environment and the things that we’re doing daily are not helping. (Brian Ayers)

For men, especially, the 80/20 rule shows that 80% of the impact on their sexual performance is environmental and the other 20% is psychological. For women, it’s the opposite.

Patriarchal standards hurt menThe belief that men and women are opposites and should act in certain ways is damaging and harmful to them all.

Men are taught and expected to be relatively emotionless and to be okay without receiving almost any platonic intimacy, either from their partner or friends.

This means that men nearly crave being sexual with their partners because it is almost the only time that they can be kissed, held, or hugged.

You don’t have the physical touch, you don’t have the emotional or stimulation going on, and so all that leads up to is that you’re not able to perform, and, the main thing that’s missing for guys is the foreplay. (Brian Ayers)

Foreplay is for men tooDepending on their environment and what they do during the day, men’s testosterone levels can become impacted. However, to perform and enjoy themselves, they need testosterone levels and foreplay as well, even if they may not think so.
Foreplay begins long before you and your partner enter the bedroom. It includes having a healthy lifestyle, respecting and caring for each other, and also for yourself, allowing you to share your best self with your partner too.

Maintaining the momentum in the bedroom

For most husbands that I’ve talked to, they’re just happy their wife engaged in sex – they don’t give a shit about what she looks like, they don’t give a shit about those 10 pounds … he doesn’t care, he’s just glad you picked him to have sex with. (Veronica Cisneros)

What happens when the erection goes away during sex? Firstly, with aging and a decrease in testosterone, this is considered normal.

It can be reversed and improved, but the husband needs to make some lifestyle and mental changes for this to happen.

Regarding feeling embarrassed in the bedroom, even though this is a “normal” response, it doesn’t have to end there.

Recognize the strange moment, and take back control by continuing the intimacy and the intimate moment with your partner.

For the ladies, just to know if he’s having sex with you then he wants to have sex with you he’s not thinking about your weight at all, he’s enjoying himself. (Brian Ayers)

Ladies, if your husband loses his erection during sex, reassure him that it’s not a be-all-end-all moment. Remind each other that it doesn’t define your relationship, and keep loving on each other, even – and especially – as your bodies may change.

How to have the bedroom talk with your partnerEncourage him to find help, like speaking with Brian Ayers.

He needs to figure out why it is happening because your husband is more likely to avoid talking about it if he doesn’t understand why it happens.

One important thing to do is not to talk about it right there and then you’re already vulnerable, and the suspect is still at the crime scene that’s not a good time to bring up the topic. (Brian Ayers)

Do not have the “we need to talk about your erections and your health” talk right in the middle of the bedroom during an intimate moment, or just after one because you will both feel embarrassed and vulnerable.

If you want to bring it up, show that you have an interest in being intimate with your husband and ask how they feel about it, what their patterns were, and if they have done anything different from the last time there may have been an issue.

That’s when you’re in a state where it’s like well now he wants to do something and you’re helping him by saying, “Hey, you want to have sex? Let me help you get to your goal.” That’s a much easier time to have this conversation. (Brian Ayers)

It’s that time of the year again…Family gatherings, year-end lunches, Christmas feasts and you are already dreading the imminent weight gain of the holidays. What do you notice about your habits this time of year? Does your perfectionism lead you to binge and restrict? How could your childhood experiences command your adult choices?

In today’s podcast, we are joined by Sheley Brien. Sheley talks all about how to survive the holiday season without a diet. Take a listen to learn what you gift and give yourself to be healthy and happy this holiday season.

Meet Sheley BrienSheley is a wife and mother with an extensive background in corporate America before transitioning to business ownership.

She is also a nationally recognized equestrian athlete, mindset expert, and personal performance coach with over 10 years of experience in the health and wellness industry.

Sheley specializes in transforming the body and mind of high-achieving women by using her proven nutrition and mindset methods which encompasses her Boss Up approach.

Connect with Sheley on the website, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook.

In This PodcastSummary* Overcoming perfectionist restriction * Care for and fuel yourself * Couple’s dynamics through fitness and wellness * Sheley’s advice for prioritizing your health

Overcoming perfectionist restrictionMany people who struggle with binging and restricting, especially around food, are often perfectionists at heart, and it’s their perfectionism that pushes them to those extremes.

The one thing about a high-achiever mindset is that we are literally willing to let ourselves be abandoned so that we can win, whether it’s to win the marriage, win … as a mother, or win in our careers, and we believe we have to push ourselves aside so that we can go. (Sheley Brien)

Perfectionism loves black-and-white thinking. It wants you to commit fully to something and let everything else slide until it’s completed, and this is how you end up abandoning yourself.

It does not have to be an “either-or” situation, with anything. Use “and”, and learn how to find the gaps where you can use “and” instead of punishing yourself with “either-or”.

That mindset work was so important, I didn’t realize how horribly I was talking to myself. I didn’t realize a lot of – what was essentially holding me back – from taking care of myself, had to do with my past and my upbringing. (Veronica Cisneros)

Care for and fuel yourselfOnce you dive into and observe how you were brought up; the beliefs around food, self-worth, and “health”, you can start to unpack it.

Are the beliefs you carry around certain foods passed down from what your parents believe, or your community or the society that you live in? Once you can identify them, you can separate them from yourself and make space for how you want to live your life.

“Oh, I can’t have the carbs. Oh, cut out the sugar … cut out all this stuff” … because that’s like normal diet culture telling us that. (Sheley Brien)

If you are a high-achiever, you need sustainable, good energy to keep performing. So rather than restrict yourself, ask: how do I want to feel?

You need energy, and food is your fastest form of energy. So, now that you understand nutrition from a different standpoint, you are now empowered at a restaurant to not go feast but to actually ask, “How do I want to feel? What do I want? What have I had today?” (Sheley Brien)

Couple’s dynamics through fitness and wellnessIt might initially feel selfish to commit yourself, but it is necessary. Remember that this selfishness is not genuine, because you add love and respect to your marriage when you love and respect yourself as well, and that includes making promises to yourself.

We’re so used to giving that taking care of ourselves seems selfish when in reality, it’s the most selfless thing you can do because when you take care of yourself that makes you a better business owner, leader, mom and wife. You are better in every area when you actually put yourself first. (Sheley Brien)

You and your partner need to support one another on your personal journeys.

Sheley’s advice for prioritizing your healthThe best thing that you can do is to:

  • Increase your water intake
  • Give yourself flexibility
  • Know that you are worth the energy and time that it takes to invest in yourself

You dread the holidays approaching because you don’t want to put on a brave face and pretend like all is okay with your marriage. You are married but somewhere along the line, it felt like you became just roommates. Is this you Mama?

Do you feel lonely in your marriage? Are you perhaps ignoring problems that you know are present in the relationship? Has the value of your marriage been forgotten by both of you?

In this podcast episode, I talk about how being married yet feeling all alone these holidays and some steps on how to get your marriage back on track. Grab some pen and paper, and let’s get to work!

Summary* Loneliness in marriage * How did this happen? * What you can do about it

Loneliness in marriage

The reason why I’m bringing up this topic in this holly, jolly month is because it’s important! You know, married couples actually do feel alone, and … it’s everything leading to that that couples completely ignore and avoid. (Veronica Cisneros)

If you have been struggling with feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and feeling disconnected from your partner and your marriage, then you need to take action and face it.

Ignoring this problem and hoping that it resolves itself is not going to work. You need to address this issue with your partner, with yourself, and with a therapist so that you can get back on the path with your husband that you know you want to be on.

How did this happen? Most couples feel lonely in a marriage when there’s a lack of connection, unhealthy communication, lack of support or appreciation, financial issues, intimacy, and sex.

If you guys aren’t prioritizing the relationship. Yeah, that’s how it happens, when you stop prioritizing the relationship. And, unfortunately, this can happen very easily in a marriage, especially when you have kids. (Veronica Cisneros)

The relationship takes the back seat while everything else is put to the forefront, and so the marriage is neglected.

One thing I often see couples do is that women will prioritize household chores, kids, and their to-do list, while Men will prioritize work as well as the to-do list. They both stick to these roles because it’s easy to check off the box. (Veronica Cisneros)

Due to poor communication skills, each partner blames the other for feeling alone.

They become dependent on their partner fulfilling their needs and providing them with validation. This puts too many unrealistic expectations on the relationship.

It literally starts with you! Yes, I’m talking to you, and you! If both of you guys are listening … it’s important to identify what issues you’re bringing into the relationship. Are you dependent on your spouse to provide you with validation? Are you relying on them to fulfill you? If you answered yes to any of these, mama and papa, this is something you need to work on. (Veronica Cisneros)

What you can do about it

You both play a role and being able to identify what part you play is truly important, and it’s helpful. (Veronica Cisneros)

  • It’s time to speak up and share how you’re feeling.

Have conversations without criticism, blame, or judgment because they will help increase connection, which is what we ultimately want.

  • Stay away from saying that your partner is the problem.

Remember if you lead with criticism and blame the conversation will end quicker than when it started.

  • Ask him if he feels disconnected as well, and listen without interrupting him or judging his response.

Ask for clarification and listen again to understand even if you don’t agree.

  • Ask questions. Have an open conversation with your partner to see if you can both pinpoint where the disconnection started.
  • Work on yourself and the issues you bring into the relationship. It’s better to have these conversations now before you’re surrounded by an audience.

What usually happens with couples is that they ignore the signs that there’s something wrong or trouble in the relationship. I can’t tell you how many times couples have told me, “I thought we were just in a rough patch and now the D-word is being thrown around. How did we get here?” (Veronica Cisneros)

  • Seek professional help. If you and your partner find it difficult to have conversations without arguing, it may be time to seek professional help.

A couple’s therapist can provide you with the tools and skills you both need to reignite the flame, and help you rebuild your relationship and strengthen your connection so you don’t have to feel lonely anymore.

Understandably, you are frustrated, but rather than making them the enemy, start the conversation from the angle of working on the relationship, and what being a couple looks like for the both of you.

Express your feelings about pornEverybody has a different opinion about porn, and you should be able to express yours with your partner and have them respect and understand it.

You want to be honest … it’s also about how you feel about it, “I don’t want you to use porn”, or, “I think this is a little too often”. (Carly Herbert)

Talk with your partner about whether you are for porn, or against porn, and why.

Discuss expectationsFollowing on from expressing your feelings and sentiments about porn in an open conversation with your partner, then talk about your expectations.

What do they struggle with, and how much? What is realistic for them in terms of bringing their addiction under control, and even healing it fully?

Set boundariesLay an action plan out together, as a couple or together with a couple’s therapist, that has an end goal that both you and your partner are working towards.

Again, your expectations from your honest and open discussion are what will lead you to set the boundaries to get you to the shared goal, so be real with yourself and with your partner!

I would tell women that if their husband is super struggling with a porn addiction, finding an addictions counselor would be helpful to do this together. (Carly Herbert)

A couple’s therapist can help to hold accountability and be the middle-man so that you and your partner can focus on developing the relationship together.

Have compassion

Your partner is not doing this to spite you or throwing it in your face that you’re not worthy. This really can be a compulsion that just takes time to recondition. (Carly Herbert)

It can be difficult to believe, especially if you feel strongly against porn, but sometimes people become addicted to porn as they can get to anything.

Do not take it personally. Your partner needs help, and help can be given. This addiction can be healed and fully recovered from.

Be proactiveTalk about what you would do with your partner if a porn addiction were to develop, or any addiction for that matter.

Being proactive is a great way for this issue to be addressed and for you both to understand how you can best approach one another if something similar were to come up.

Porn addiction is something that we have socially stigmatized … I don’t want women’s values to be crushed because they don’t want to have this conversation, or they don’t want to find out that they’re not enough because that is not the case. (Carly Herbert)
