Carey and Karen's conversation with Morgan was a bold and vulnerable look behind the scenes at what it looks like to partner with a friend and take bold leaps knowing that being "ready" isn't a real thing! These powerhouse women started off as most of us do, strangers, when they walked into Burn Boot Camp. They met on the floating floor a few months later after they showed up at the holiday party in the exact same outfit - a perfect conversation starter! Through bold leaps of faith, holding each other in a place of grace, and overcoming grief, these women have been through it all and carved out a piece of the Waukesha community that they are proud to call their home. Listen along as these women open up and share their personal journies that not only led them to one another but to opening a Burn Boot Camp just months after their first official meeting.

Mindset is everything! Morgan is opening up about her mental game and the mental muscles she flexes when things just don't feel right to get them back on track.

"You have to seek out positivity right now in this world. Everyone is struggling in their own way, and it can often come out as negativity on social media. I work really hard to not let the negative thoughts last long. If my mindset is off, I know I'm not the best person to be around. If I get down, worried, or anxious, things don't operate well. It shows up in work, my marriage, how I'm a mom. I've learned that about myself and I am very self-aware. If I'm acting out in a way that isn't who I want to show up as, I dig deep and figure out what is causing the stress in my life. I can recognize that my mindset is not good and then I analyze my inputs! What am I consuming? Podcasts, social media, news, conversations, anything! Your inputs equal your outputs!"

Healthy communication is just one of the tips and tricks I share when you need to hack feeling off and negative thoughts are consuming your mindset.

She joins the Burn family with a background in working for cruise lines and Disney in the entertainment industry. When her husband's job relocated their family from Orlando to Pensacola, she quickly had to pivot and find a new career path because there was not an entertainment industry in the area. She began in Real Estate before finding Burn Boot Camp and it was an easy decision for her and her husband to invest.

Stephanie also has a history of eating disorder(s) which was induced by her decade spent working for the entertainment industry. She opens up about her rock bottom, the importance of education in her recovery, and what it means to her to spread the good word to her clients in the fitness industry.

Morgan had the opportunity to sit down with one of Burn Boot Camp's multi-unit Franchise Partners, Wendy Egert, today! Wendy is the Franchise Partner of our Burlington, NC and Central Triad, NC locations. She is truly a jack of all trades! Between being a mom, and running her gyms, she is also a broadcaster for the NASCAR cup series.

Wendy started her Burn journey 7 years ago as many of us do, as a member! Her professional career has been with NASCAR and she just celebrate her 20-year mark with them. She started in NASCAR because her Dad is a retired NASCAR driver, and they moved down south from North Carolina from Chicago when she was in high school. She went down the media route from the advice of her mentors and started her broadcasting career at the ripe age of 21. She worked her way up from production, to broadcasting in NASCAR, and in 2004 became the first female pit road reporter and the youngest in the history of NASCAR to go on air and broadcast a race.

She has had the opportunity to be the first in a lot of things in the industry in a lot of realms. She has broken a lot of barriers and gone through many glass ceilings in her field by being her authentic self. She absorbed a lot of information from her family history with NASCAR and translated that into her passion and really formed a real relationship with the NASCAR fan base.

She walked in the door at Burn 7 years ago knowing just ONE person. She became a Certified Personal Trainer as a passion project, while still traveling and doing her broadcasting. She followed along as her newfound friends started to open Burn locations before she and her husband decided to open a location of their own! Follow along on Wendy's journey and join our conversation on all things entrepreneurship, following your passion, breaking glass ceilings, and coming out on the other side of a pandemic.

For most of us, the coronavirus pandemic represents a completely unprecedented circumstance, as novel as it is life-changing. No event in recent history has affected us as profoundly and pervasively.

It has also given us an opportunity to dig deep and reflect on what is really important. I want to hear from you - what have you learned in the last 18 months while navigating the unchartered pandemic waters? Join the conversation over on my Instagram.

What's up guys, welcome back to another episode! Today I'm talking to you about some Unpopular Mom Truths. These are things you may not expect, but you still struggle with. A few topics we touch on today...

  • Motherhood can be hard as heck while still being the most rewarding part of life
  • The parents who look like they have it all together all the time had to work really hard to make it look like they do
  • Sometimes motherhood is just round the clock cleaning
  • Sometimes you give into the sweets, or maybe the iPad, or maybe the drive-thru Chick Fil A
  • Being the default parent OR “bad cop” is hard but someone has to do it

No one wants to be perfect and no one should be held to that standard. Especially in parenting. If someone looks like they have it all together, they don't. Especially me!

Whether you're an entrepreneur, go into the office every day, or are working from home - this episode is for you! Morgan is sharing her tips for productivity as a working Mom and what she's found that works best for her.

Some of the tips we cover today:

  • Baby-wearing. Hello, hands-free! Snuggling the little one + working at the same time doesn't sound too bad!
  • Stop multitasking. It’s BS. Close the tabs, start time blocking your priorities.
  • Sleep better, work better.
  • Hire someone. Help isn’t something to be ashamed of. Bonus points for hiring someone to do something that is better at the thing than you are!
  • Always batch process. Think of it as an assembly line. One person doesn't build a whole car. Instead, they make one part over and over because it's much more efficient. Apply this same principle to your business.
  • Have self-awareness. What works for one person may not work for you.
  • Speaking of to-do lists, don't add too many tasks. Try to focus on just one to three things a day. If you finish those then you can add more.
  • Shift your mindset. Are you always thinking about how little time you have? How busy you are? How frazzled you are? What does that thinking do?
  • Let's talk technology. I know it seems like there are new headlines every day about how bad using screens and technology are for your kid, but let's get real for a minute. It's not the end of the world if you give your kid the iPad for 20 minutes while you finish some work. Right now, I am giving you permission!
  • Don't be too hard on yourself. Self-care, unplugging, alone time to recharge, date night -- whatever it is, make the time and put it on your calendar!

In today's conversation, we are breaking down the basics of Intuitive Eating. We're learning how to discover satisfaction and respect while honoring our bodies and their signals.

Intuitive eating is an evidence-based framework and a non-diet approach to promoting health. It's focused on attunement with your body's signals. Simply put: it's eating when you are hungry, and stopping when you are full. Seeing food as fuel, not filler. A combination of head, heart, and body wisdom. It is NOT about weight loss. It is an ongoing lifelong practice.

Are you intimidated by accepting risk into your life? Life can be difficult and uncertain, especially when faced with the prospect of change. Although change is often the key that will positively alter the path of our lives, we shy away from it for fear of leaving behind our comfort zones and entering into the unknown. This fear robs us of our freedom to make the life choices that can bridge the gap between where we are and where we want to be.

Doubting our own abilities, taking risks, failing gracefully (and not so gracefully) is a huge part of what makes us human; and they are all common threads in parents, entrepreneurs, and business owners.

Join our conversation today as we talk through not taking failure too personally, and the rewards paired with embracing change.

Confidence is not manifested through the number on a scale! There is so much more to being happy with yourself; ask yourself what you're really trying to gain and remembering it's okay to want to lose weight, but it's not okay to focus on the number.

The scale is limiting. It doesn't take into consideration how many inches you've lost, your body composition, how much muscle you've gained or body fat you've lost, how your clothes are fitting, or how you feel on the inside.

What you see on the scale is just one number, and it should be considered as such. Let's unpack the basics today and shift our perspective towards our goals outside of the number we see in front of us.

Today we're diving into something common that makes us all human, and it's negative self-talk. We do this when we look in the mirror, when we scroll through social media, when we lay our heads down at night. We all do it -- and there are ways to 'undo' it and overcome those negative thoughts your inner critic is telling you.

Part of the strategy of overcoming is to pause, consider the thought, and think: is this thought real? Are these expectations based on something external, or are they real? What triggered this though?

Let's take a reality check together and take an inventory on whether these thoughts are realistic or not, and focus on the positive thoughts that counterbalance the negative ones! After all, we're in this together.

Morgan sits down with her good friend Lauren Nelson to break down their commonalities and some of the most frequently asked questions they receive as Moms, entrepreneurs, Franchise Partners, career-driven women, and more.

Lauren, Franchise Partner of Bethel Park, PA, had been a long-time Burn member before learning of the opportunity to open her own location. She just didn’t see herself as a business owner or think it was possible. She started asking questions - none of which were ever received as silly or inexperienced. The more she learned, the more she could see herself in the shoes of a Franchise Partner. Burn’s mission was her true North throughout the entire opening process, which she trusted completely. In 2015 she found out she was expecting her first child, and by 2016 she had signed on to become Franchise Partner of Bethel Park.

Lauren fought the mental battle of feeling torn between her dream of being a SAHM and becoming a business owner. She’s an innate lover of people, a goal-setter, and a team player, which comes from her collegiate athletic background and competitive edge. Throughout the onboarding process, she kept waiting for a sign not to move forward with the business, or a red flag telling her it would take time away from her family - but that flag never waved!

To learn more about all of the opportunities waiting on the other side of self-doubt, check out this podcast and Lauren's full story.

It’s been a crazy 365 days. Understatement of the year, right? We’ve been stuck inside, our options have been limited, we can’t travel the way we used to. We have to get creative in how we date our partners all while we’re busy, have kids, observe restrictions, and maintain the everyday grind.

Today I'm sharing some of the things that Devan and I do in hopes it'll give you some inspiration and advice for the next time you're planning a date night, or feeling like you're craving some of that connection time with your spouse or partner.

Stepping outside the box when it comes to date night is one of the best nuggets of advice I've received recently and it actually came from two marriage counselors, Tony & Alisa DiLorenzo I hosted on the podcast last year. You can listen to the episode here! Shifting from the mindset of "we have to have a babysitter, a night 'off', dinner and a movie on the weekend" in order for it to be a date.

  • Dates can be coffee before the kids wake up.
  • Grabbing lunch together during the workday.
  • If you’re both working from home, carving out the time to sit down together for 30 minutes.
  • Working out together.
  • Plan activities that don’t have to center around technology or watching TV.

It’s fair to say that mothers were the inspiration for Burn long before Devan and I were even parents ourselves. All too often, we saw women putting the needs of others before their own- children, spouses, employers, and coworkers. And while motherhood and selflessness are often intertwined, you can’t pour from an empty cup. The seed that started the fastest growing fitness franchise sprung from the notion that women need to set aside time for their own well-being to lead a healthy and balanced life.

We’ve worked towards this end for the last eight years, and continue to do so with passion and drive. But we know that by directly marketing to women, and particularly mothers, we have a responsibility to build both safe and effective workouts at every stage: prenatal, postnatal, and through menopause… we’ve got you!

From complimentary child watch to custom modifications for your goals, we strive to make the experience exactly what every individual needs. Burn Boot Camp is transforming communities nationwide and changing the way people think about fitness. Start your complimentary 14-Day Test Drive today! If I have learned one thing on this wild ride, I've learned that mindset is everything. I want you to work on training the voice inside your head to speak with respect to yourself and others. I want you to become an optimist!

I've gone through times in life where I was letting others rob me of my joy, taking my optimism with them. Today, I've made a commitment that I am in control of living my own life in a happy, fulfilling way.

Here are some of my tips when it comes to working your way toward optimistic living:

  • Make a mental note every time you have a negative thought. You may be surprised how many pass through your head on a daily basis.
  • Think about what optimism really means. Don't ignore your stress, rethink how you respond to those stressors.
  • Begin each day from a place of gratitude.
  • You are the company that you keep.

Optimism is a choice.

Did you know about 1 in 4 American adults suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year?

That's no easy fact to face when you think about the number of people you're surrounded by each day. It can be so easy to hide, ignore, and put it off. I think one of the best places to start is to destigmatize mental health disorders by talking about it, even if it may be difficult.

Recently, I was so touched by a Burn Boot Camp client's mental health transformation, I felt compelled to share and really dive into some important reminders. Listen in to this episode where we get real about mental health -it's so important!

Today, we're joined by Dr. Brooke and we're talking all things SKIN. We're diving into lots of questions including...

What is acne?

What causes breakouts?

What should we be doing to control it?

To put it simply, breakouts are a type of inflammation. We chat about two of the biggest culprits when it comes to skin issues: hormones + food. Dr. Brooke shares how our skin is the ultimate clue to how our hormones and our health are doing. When acne happens, it's likely a signal that something is out of balance.

Our skin is truly a window into our bodies. Whether your inflammation is being triggered by food, hormones, chronic illness, gut health, or stress – our skin lets us know. We've all been faced with those unwanted blemishes, so hopefully understanding the root of it all is helpful as we move forward.

Parenting always feels like such a hot button topic because everyone has their own opinions + experiences that they bring to the table. It's safe to say that all parents experience unsolicited advice and even judgment at some point. If we let that in, it's so easy to find ourselves down a rabbit hole of mom guilt.

But, there's hope yet! We've been given the gift of being parents, and we have the power to control how we navigate through the world with our kiddos. At the end of the day, we all need to do what is best for our kids, which we know better than anybody else.

Today I'm sharing some of my favorite tools for dealing with this:

  • Take a look at the source of the advice.
  • Build out a trusted network of resources.
  • Have confidence in yourself.
  • Let the negativity roll off your back.
  • Don't put judgment out there.

There's no one size fits all approach to parenting, and we all need the space to figure out what works for us. Let's shower each other with more support and kindness and less judgment!

Today we’re joined by a badass, mom of 3, personal trainer, and CrossFit athlete – Emily Breeze. Emily’s built her career up around this motto: you don’t have to be fit to start, but you have to start to be fit. Her followers love her for her authentic and honest take on how to incorporate fitness into your everyday life.

As a mom of two with one on the way, I’m super passionate about what it looks like to stay fit as a mom. Emily shares that for her to be a happy mother and wife, she needs that 30 - 60 minutes to sweat every day. But, Emily also believes that the world is our playground when it comes to working out. She shares inspiration on how you can fit that workout in nearly anywhere. It’s so easy to forget that working out is simply moving your body. Emily reminds us how important it is to find the movement that works for you.

With three kids under three, Emily also has a lot of perspective on motherhood, pregnancy, and where fitness fits. We chat about the fitness shaming that too often goes on when women choose to have a super active pregnancy, as well as how quickly society expects women to bounce back. Emily also shares her experience with c-sections and some of the treatments she’s done to help heal scar tissue and get movement patterns back to where they were before pregnancy.

All in all, Emily reminded us that wellness is about balance and finding what works for you. We chatted lots about motherhood and pregnancy, but so much of Emily’s advice is relevant for everyone – to move forward with a healthy lifestyle, you have to put one foot forward and then the next.

Significant changes in our lives can make us feel lost, maybe even unrecognizable, both physically, mentally. Today, I am encouraging you to be proud of the person you are every day.

The decade challenge has been floating around social media. I participated in the challenge by posting a picture of Devan and me from the present-day and ten years ago. I read so many captions on other people's decade challenge posts that read something like:

"This is what kids will do to you." or...

"10 years ago and 10 pounds thinner, too!"

Stop focusing on the things that you miss from your past life, focus on what you have gained! It takes a concerted effort to reconnect with yourself, make time for yourself, and take care of yourself.

I want you to stop feeling guilty about your 45-minute workout, lunch by yourself, heading to bed early to read, or even watching an hour of your favorite show!

Today I am giving you some of my best practices that I try to integrate into my life to keep myself a priority.

  • Schedule it on your calendar 🗓
  • Prioritize quality time with the people you love 💛
  • Pursue your passions GUILT-FREE ⭐️
  • Give back 🎗
  • Meditate 🧘‍♀️

I love pouring into you through my podcast, my social media, through Burn Boot Camp, so grab your coffee, throw in your headphones, and take 20 minutes for yourself by listening along with me today.

Today we're joined by cardiologist and best-selling author of the Plant Paradox – Dr. Steven Gundry. Dr. Gundry shares with us some of the hidden dangers of so-called "healthy" food and what we should be looking out for in our diets. We chat about one of the most talked-about items in healthy food culture – gluten. Dr. Gundry shares that gluten is a type of lectin, which is simply a plant protein that can actually be found in lots of foods. But, while lots of people have started adopting a gluten-free diet, that doesn't mean that they're avoiding lectins altogether and these proteins can be associated with inflammation and a variety of other health issues. Dr. Gundry shares about how lectins affect people differently and how so many diseases begin in the gut. He shares that by simply eating and eliminating the right foods, many people are seeing a reverse in inflammation, symptoms, and conditions. We also chat about the seven deadly disruptors that Dr. Gundry shares in his book and how these toxins are connected to so many health issues. The good news is this: there are tons of substitutions we can make so we can still enjoy some of our favorite foods while also avoiding these disrupting ingredients. All in all, Dr. Gundry offers up tons of things to think about when it comes to what we're fueling our bodies with and how we can trace things back to our gut and overall wellbeing. In today’s episode, we’re talking about taking risks and my personal experience in how stepping out of our comfort zone completely changed the course of my life.

When I look back on my story, I realized that I’ve been taking risks for the past 10+ years throughout my entire career. First, I had to step out of my norm and move to Naples for my first job with Kellogg's. Then just as we were settling into life in Naples, I was offered a promotion to head to Charlotte. Eventually, I came to one of the biggest crossroads in my life. Do I continue climbing the corporate ladder or do I move my efforts full-time to Burn Boot Camp? You guys may know where we landed on that one, but it was SUCH a tough decision to make.

Each and every time these opportunities came up in my life, I asked myself “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” Most of the time, the worst thing is simply that we fail and then we move forward in a new direction. It’s so easy for us to fixate on what could go wrong when we start taking risks, but what we should be thinking is “What could go absolutely right?”

My experiences have taught me this: the best risk to take is on yourself. So, let’s not be afraid to get uncomfortable or to fail taking chances. Instead, let’s recognize that it’s all part of our journey and how much we owe it to ourselves to take that risk.

I’m going to be 100% honest with you, I don’t believe in cheat meals. I don’t believe it is the best strategy for developing a healthy and happy relationship with food and your body.

Why?

Cheat meals make us label food as good or bad. In turn we relate this “good and bad” mentality to ourselves. When we eat good food, we are good and when we eat bad food, we are bad. This leads us to constantly judge and punish ourselves for our bad choices.

It gives us the mentality that our cheat meal is a reward for eating healthy all week long, so when we eat something unhealthy outside of our cheat meal, we feel like we need to punish ourselves.

This can either be mental punishment, where we are beating ourselves up on the inside. Or this can be a physical punishment where we think we need to work out extra hard, or do double workouts for a few days to “make up for” the “damage” we did.

We should never live a life where we are always judging or punishing ourselves. We deserve better than that. Plus, this mentality will never lead us to truly loving and accepting our bodies for what it is.

Listen to the full episode to hear more of my thoughts on cheat meals!

Let’s chat about intermittent fasting!

There’s a lot of hype around intermittent fasting—and a lot of questions about it, too. How do you intermittent fast? What kind of intermitting fasting should you do? Do you need to intermittent fast to see the results you want?

For starters, intermittent fasting consists of intervals of fasting during which you abstain from eating for a designated period of time. The purpose is to make your body switch from burning sugar as fuel to burning body fat as fuel. So of course it’s a tool used by many to aid in weight loss and increase lean muscle mass.

Intermittent fasting has been something I’ve wanted to discuss for a very long time on Coffee & Kettlebells, although I couldn't find the right person to educate us on the topic. There are countless health and fitness experts who preach intermittent fasting and that it’s the best thing for your health and fitness. While I’m not disagreeing, we are so careful about ensuring we bring guests on the podcast that will provide us with non-biased information and, with intermittent fasting, that’s definitely hard to find.

Thankfully, I found the perfect guest, Mckel Kooienga, MS, RDN, LDN, which many of you know as Nutrition Stripped on Instagram. Mckel is a Registered Dietitian and a self-coined *inner health designer*, who has created a trailblazing mind-body health company that supports the wellbeing of people around the world. In this episode, Mckel gives us the 411 on intermittent fasting, sharing both the benefits and drawbacks, and helps us understand whether or not we would benefit from it.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The different forms of intermittent fasting
  • The benefits of Intermittent fasting for

What other people think about you has nothing to do with you at all. What they think of you is really just a reflection of what they think of themselves. In most cases, people don’t like other people because they pull insecurities out in themselves, which makes them defensive.

You need to understand that the negative comments or rude actions towards you are triggered from thoughts they feel about themselves. They are projecting their insecurities onto you, and their insecurities should not be your problem, and most definitely should not take away from your happiness.

The version of you they have created in their minds is not your responsibility, because the version they have created of you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. This means you need to stop caring what others think about you.

Ask yourself, are you overly concerned about what others think about you? Do you try to dress to impress? Do you try to live up to someone else’s standards? Do you act a certain way to try to fit in? Does what others think about you cause you to worry, or feel anxious or stressed?

If so, in this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, I’m here to tell you five reasons why you need to stop caring what people think about you.

In this episode, the host of the Next Level podcast, CEO of Burn Boot Camp and my amazing husband, Devan Kline, shares his best tips to help us overcome our excuses and gain the motivation we need to get to where we want to be.

Just like everyone else, I sometimes find an excuse to not work out and regularly lack the motivation to get to the gym. Devan shared some amazing advice in this episode that really stuck with me. I asked him how we get ourselves to work out when we don’t have any motivation? His answer was perfect: "You need to forget about instant gratification. It may feel good in the moment to skip your workout, but when you think about next week, next month or next year, how will you feel if you continue to fall for instant gratification. Most likely you will be unhappy being stuck in the same place you were. So, when you lack motivation, just think about what your future self would want you to do.”

Do you wish you could stop starting over on your fitness journey, start seeing results and experience lasting change in yourself? I’m guessing most of you answered yes, but wishing for those things won’t bring them into existence in your life. You can’t wish your way to success; you need to put in the work.

Tune into this episode, Overcoming Excuses, Gaining Motivation and Getting to the Next Level with Devan Kline, if you’re ready to overcome your excuses and the gain the motivation you need to take your health and fitness to the next level.

I know so many of us mother’s want our children’s diet to be filled with all the healthiest foods. And, I also know when our children’s diets don’t go as we planned and they consume foods that are less than healthy, many of us feel like we are failing as mothers.

Well, if you think it is realistic to get your child to eat healthy all the time, I’m going to be honest with you: You are holding yourself to an impossible standard.

As my husband, Devan, and I are both personal trainers and the founders of a fitness company, we originally felt this same pressure to raise children with 100% clean diets. After having children, our food philosophy for them has changed and we are completely okay with it!

Our philosophy now is more focused on educating our daughter on the basic principles of nutrition, rather than focused on forcing or restricting any foods in her diet. We try our best for her to understand the difference between “yummy” foods, as we like to call it, and healthy foods.

We want to raise a child that has a happy and healthy relationship with all foods, and we believe restricting or forcing any foods can trigger the opposite effect. Instead, we allow her to decide what she does and doesn’t want to eat, and then do our best to offset the “yummy” foods with healthier foods whenever possible.

Do you have a picky eater in your household?

Raise your hand if you are bloated! Keep your hand up if you always feel bloated, you have no idea what is causing it or you don’t know how to prevent it from happening in the first place. Is your hand still up? Then this episode of Coffee and Kettlebells is for you!

Did you know eating foods high in FODMAPs could be causing your bloating?

FODMAPs are types of carbohydrates found in certain foods, including wheat, beans, garlic, onion and apples. High-FODMAP foods are linked to digestive symptoms like gas, bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea and constipation. Low-FODMAP diets can provide remarkable benefits for many people with these common digestive disorders.

In this episode, I chat with well-known, functional medicine doctor, Dr. Michael Ruscio, who dives into low FODMAP diets and how they could possibly be the solution for reducing our bloating.

What You’ll Learn:

Real talk: Who else is confused about what to buy at the grocery store? With so many different labels found on food packages, from grass-fed, organic and free-range, to cage-free, pasture-raised and all-natural, grocery shopping can be so overwhelming.

What do these labels mean? Which labels should we be looking for? Which labels matter and which don’t? Navigating labels makes figuring out what to buy at the grocery store so confusing. Should you pay extra for grass-fed? Is free-range better than cage-free? Do you want all-natural or organic?

What are your thoughts on kids going on diets?

If you were to put your child on a diet, how would you do it?

Do you think we should leave it up to an app to make nutrition choices for our kids?

Weight Watchers has put out a new app specifically for kids and, in this episode, my guest and I explore the topic of kids and diets and whether it’s something parents should be doing.

Guest Katherine Hake has a dual degree in Dietetics and Nutrition, Fitness and Health from Purdue University, and is also a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, a Certified Personal Trainer, a Beachbody LIVE Master Trainer, and the host of the amazing podcast, Fit Friends Happy Hour.

Katherine had previously reached out to her following to ask them if they were put on diets by their parents when they were younger and, if so, if it still affects them today. The majority of women who responded saying they were put on diets as kids now struggle with body-image issues today.

Many also said, when they were kids, they never thought anything about their weight until it was addressed by their parents.

How can we as parents ensure our kids are a healthy weight without putting them on diets? How can we educate and empower our kids to make nutritious choices, listen to their bodies and have a healthy relationship with food and their bodies, w

When we are trying to live a healthier, more active lifestyle, one of the biggest obstacles, one that is the hardest to overcome, is having people in our lives who aren’t trying to live the same lifestyle.

Guess what?! I have the secret to feeling more comfortable and confident in your own skin and developing a healthier relationship with your body! I promise you, it’s nothing extreme and is something you are completely capable of doing now.

The secret? Just buy the jeans that fit–or shirt, or whatever piece of clothing it may be.

I know it’s so common for us to want to cram ourselves into a certain size of jeans, but I truly believe this is so unhealthy for the relationship we have with our bodies and here are three reasons I think this...

  • Buying jeans that are too small is a constant reminder that our body isn’t where we want it to be.

  • When we buy a pair of jeans that are too small for us, we are convincing ourselves we need to be a certain size.

  • When we buy that pair of jeans that are a size too small, it causes us to feel uncomfortable in our own skin.

When you buy the jeans that fit, they will hit you at all the right places, be flattering on your body, making you look smaller, regardless of the size on the tag. You won’t have pants cutting you off or feeling tight in all the wrong places and instead, you will you feel comfortable and confident! More importantly, when you put on a pair of jeans that actually fit your body, you won’t be triggered to think your body needs to change.

At the end of the day, who cares about what size you wear? If you buy a size larger than you would like to wear, there isn’t a huge sticker on them showcasing what size they are for the whole world to see. No one will ever know if you are wearing a size eight instead of a size six, or a size twelve instead of a size ten. The only thing they will notice is that you have a pair of jeans on that fit you right and are flattering on your body! They will notice that you are more confident because you aren’t feeling self-conscious and u

Let me guess. You either have a dedicated skincare regiment or you are addicted to buying more and more skincare products?

Let me also guess that you have no idea what ingredients are in the skincare products you are purchasing and using?

If we are being honest with ourselves, most of us select skincare products that have the best branding and marketing, without really knowing if the ingredients are healthy, not only for our skin, but for our bodies and our overall health.

Did you know that most skincare products are actually water based and dry out our skin? Or what about that “acne-fighting” skincare product we use. Did you know it can actually cause more acne?

I could go on and on asking if you do or don’t know these skincare facts, but instead, I recommend you tune into this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells.

Many women are experiencing symptoms of depression, hormonal issues, chronic pain, hair loss, unexplained fatigue and other symptoms which they believe to be related to their breast implants. They claim once getting the implants removed, their symptoms disappeared. According to Medical News Today, many doctors are refusing to recognize breast implant illness as a real medical condition and diagnosis.

It’s easy to fall victim to our busy lives. We let our health and fitness routines get pushed aside and begin to feel so far from our best selves. We feel unenergized, unmotivated and all around not good.

Many of us reach a breaking point where we want to stop feeling this way and find the motivation to begin making positive changes in our lifestyle. We tell ourselves we are going to eat healthier and work out more. We usually stick with it for a week or two, sometimes even a month, before we allow life to get in the way. Before we know it, we find ourselves returning to our unhealthy habits and feeling less than our best again.

We tell ourselves we’ll start again tomorrow. Tomorrow comes and we still don’t have the motivation. Now we’ll start on Monday, and the pattern continues to repeat itself. Monday comes and our motivation is still lacking. At this point we vow to start again after a certain holiday, vacation or event. We fall into this vicious cycle of continuing to find excuses for putting off living a healthier lifestyle. Before we know it, a year has passed, and we are still stuck in the same place.

Something we all need to realize is that there will always be an excuse. There will never be that perfect time to start. We will always be tired and busy. Life will always be in the way if we allow it to be.

So how do we find the motivation to not only start living a healthier lifestyle, but to create a long-term healthy lifestyle and sticks?

That’s the exact question I answer in this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells. It’s time to be empowered to get and stay motivated once and for all! T

What do these labels mean? Which labels should we be looking for? Which labels matter and which ones don’t? Navigating these labels makes figuring out what to buy at the grocery store so confusing.

Food marketers have done an amazing job trying to trick us into believing their products are healthier for you than they actually are by using fancy buzzwords like “low-fat”. Unfortunately, most of us fall for it!

I'll let you in on a few little secrets these food marketers don’t want you to know: Low-fat isn’t a label you should look for, high-protein doesn’t automatically mean it’s healthy, and you don’t have to eat organic to see results. Mind blowing, right?

Want to learn more about exactly what you should be buying at the grocery store? This episode of Coffee & Kettlebells is for you. Guest Kevin Curry does an amazing job explaining the ins and outs of different foods labels, making grocery shopping a whole heck of a lot simpler for us, especially those of us on a budget! How many times have you felt cute and confident in an outfit, until you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror and become instantly self-conscious?

And, how many times have you allowed your opinion of your reflection in the mirror trigger negative internal dialogue like, “I’m so fat” or “I can’t believe how ugly I look"?

Most of us probably cannot even count! It’s crazy how quickly we go from feeling confident to feeling self-conscious with just one glimpse in the mirror. It’s even more crazy how we much of our self-worth and self-confidence we place in the reflection we see in the mirror.

If this sounds like you and you are a victim of the “fat” mirror, this episode is for you!

In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, I chat with you about the negative relationship so many of us have with the mirror, which greatly effects the relationship we have with our bodies. Plus, I talk to you about how we can change our perspective on the reflection we see to successfully develop greater self-love and self-confidence.

Do you want to feel less stressed? How about have more energy? Or, have better skin? A stronger immune system? Higher quality of sleep?

Thankfully, functional mushrooms can help! In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, the National Educator for Four Sigmatic, Danielle Ryan Broida, shares how we can use functional mushrooms to improve the quality of our health and life. Danielle, who is also a Registered Herbalist of the American Herbalists Guild, Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Instructor of Mycology, educates us on the different types of functional mushrooms and their benefits, including reishi, shitake, lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps and more, and how we can begin including them into our daily diet.

Functional mushrooms are best known for their energy boosting benefits. We all live crazy, busy lives and spread ourselves way too thin. I don’t know about you, but I find myself refilling my coffee cup way too many times throughout the day to help me stay up to speed with my life. But, for some of us, drinking too much coffee makes us feel worse. In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, Danielle shares how we can use functional mushrooms to cut-down on the coffee we consume without compromising that boost of energy we all need.

If you are ready for the boost of energy right now, you’re going to want to try out Four Sigmatic’s ground coffee with Lion’s Mane and Chaga.

For most of you, I think the benefit of functional mushrooms you will be most interested in is their ability to improve our skin quality! Who doesn’t want brighter, clearer and healthier looking skin? Many of us buy countless different skincare products, believing the claims on the containers that it’s going to work miracles to improve our skin quality. Although, so many of these products contain ingredients we should actually be avoiding that are detrimental to our health. So instead of intoxicating ourselves with skincare products filled with a bunch of ingredients, Danielle talks to us about how we can use functional mushrooms to improve the quality of our skin and which ones in particular work best.

My personal favorite benefit of functional mushrooms is it’s ability to reduce stress. Stress is unavoidable in our lives. No matter how hard we try, it’s going to be nearly impossible to rid ourselves of it completely. But, stress has such a major effect on our metabolism, hormones and overall health. We often think of mental stress, but physical stress from exercise and lack of sleep can cause the same negative effects on our health. There are functional mushrooms that can help sooth our adrenal glands, helping us reduce the impact stress has on our bodies that Danielle educates us on in this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells.

Do you always feel like you are running on empty? I do! For most of us, this is because we fail to get a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, lack of sleep slows our metabolism, increase our appetite and food cravings and prevents us from being mentally sharp. Thankfully, one of the benefits of functional mushrooms is improving our sleep quality. In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, Danielle shares the amazing functional mushroom that will magically improve our sleep and how we can use add it into our diet daily.

From experiencing chronic stress and being deprived of sleep, we weaken our immune system. But, for us to keep up with our busy lives, having a strong immune system is so important. In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, Danielle discusses how functional mushrooms helps strengthen our immune system and which kinds work best for boosting our immunity.

In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, you’ll also learn:

  • How to include functional mushrooms into your daily diet

In this episode, I chat with guest Dr. Marvin Singh, who dives deep into two important health topics we need to know more about: antibiotics and probiotics. Both antibiotics and probiotics have a huge impact on our gut health, which in turn, have a huge impact on our overall health.

I know many of us have no idea there are negative effects of antibiotics. We feel sick, we go to the doctor, we get prescribed an antibiotic and we take it without thinking twice. While in some situations antibiotics are needed, they are over-prescribed and causing more harm than good to our gut health.

To ensure our gut health is optimal, supplementing with probiotics is essential. But, if you’re anything like me, picking out the right probiotic is confusing and overwhelming! Do I want 10 billion or 50 CFUs? What even are CFUs? How many strands of bacteria do I want? Which strands of bacteria do I want? There are so many words on the label that I have never heard of before, let alone pronounce!

Dr. Marvin Singh helps us understand antibiotics and probiotics in greater depth, allowing us to make the best decisions for our gut health. He dives deep into the effects antibiotics have on our gut health, what we need to do when antibiotics are absolutely necessary to take to protect our gut health, what we need to look for when selecting a probiotic supplement and how to use probiotics effectively.

What you’ll learn:

  • What effect antibiotics are h

Fitness trackers are trending. It’s nearly impossible to come across a person who isn’t wearing one. These fitness trackers have us constantly looking to see how many steps we’ve gotten in and how many calories we’ve burned. It seems like counting our steps and tracking our calorie burn would make us healthier, right?

What if I told you these fitness trackers may do more harm than good?

What if I told you these fitness trackers don’t provide you with accurate numbers?

What if I told you these fitness trackers don’t actually help you lose more weight?

In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, I educate you on what you may not know about fitness trackers, plus my top five reasons why you should stop wearing them.

For those of you who can't survive a day without your fitness tracker, or think it’s the best tool for getting fit, losing weight and becoming healthy, you better listen up!

Hanger is real! Not only is it real, but it is also your body trying to tell you something is not right! In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, we are going to dive into what really is causing you to have an increased appetite and feel crazy hungry all the time. I chat with guests Sarah Fragoso and Dr. Brooke Kalanick, authors of the best-selling book Hangry, who educate us what is actually happening in our bodies when we feel hangry. Hint: it's your hormones!

One of my favor parts of the episode is when Dr. Brooke says, “How many times do we reach for the sugary treat instead of a high protein snack when our energy is in the tank? We feel that intense craving and think we’re getting a strong message that the cookie is exactly what our body need. In reality, this is not a cookie deficiency but rather our blood sugar on the fritz, thanks to insulin and cortisol issues.” I think most people think they are craving a cookie because they are craving a cookie, and they don’t realize that craving is actually stemming from hormonal imbalances. Dr. Brooke and Sarah explain that our hormones are talking to us all the time and telling us what we need. Instead of hating our hormones, we just need to start listening to what they are really trying to tell us, and the same goes for our metabolism! If we can learn to listen to our hormones, we can learn to balance them and successfully take control of our appetite and foods cravings.

Do you follow people on social media whose bodies you are completely envious of? And does seeing their posts of their rocking body make you feel worse about your own?

Before you praise someone for what their body looks like, first ask yourself: Are they taking a healthy approach to fitness? What do you really know about what is behind that “perfect” body? We shouldn’t celebrate or be envious or inspired by someone’s perfect-looking body until we know what is really behind their fitness success. Why? Just because someone looks great, doesn’t mean they are healthy.

People will take extreme measures to get fit, disregarding their health altogether. They can be the fittest person in the world—with perfectly sculpted legs and six-pack abs, able to do 500 burpees in a row and squat an insane amount of weight—but that does not necessarily mean they are healthy.

In this episode, I explain what it means to be fit, what it means to be healthy and how, in some cases, there can be a huge difference. Plus, I talk you through the long-term damage you can do to your body when you prioritize being fit over being healthy.

Episode 96: Is Losing Weight Really Worth It?

“You cannot hang out with negative people and expect to live a positive life.” How many times have you heard this before? I believe those words hold so much truth! On the other hand, I feel we place too much focus on others’ negativity, blaming their negative words, actions or attitudes for us not living a positive life.

When will we open our eyes and realize it’s not always others that are causing negativity to arise in our lives? When will we take ownership? We to stop pointing the finger at others for the unhappiness we are experiencing in our lives and start pointing the finger at ourselves.

In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, I show you some tough love. But I promise you, the moment you are able to face the fact that you are the one bring negativity into your life, is the moment you are able to take control of your happiness.

In this episode, I ask you five questions to help you determine whether or not you are being a negative person. I challenge you to take the time to think about these questions and look deep within yourself. To some of these questions, it may be hard for you to admit your answer is yes, but if you really want to move forward with your life in the best way possible, you have to take ownership of your own negativity.

I have two questions for you:

When trying to lose weight, do you focus on eating as little as possible? Or, do you think eating healthier means eating less?

If I had to guess, most of you answered yes to either one or both of those questions. Whether it may seem serious or not, focusing on eating as little as possible IS an eating disorder! Plus, it leads to countless health issues that can take years to recover from. In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, I chat with Amanda Meixner, meal prep maven, nutrition guru, social media influencer and the mastermind behind the Meow Meix blog, who struggled with anorexia for years. Amanda shares why starving yourself is not the answer to getting the body you want and why it's actually the worse route you can take for losing weight. Amanda shares how we can lose weight while still eating enough food to fuel our body properly...crazy, right?!

What you’ll learn about not giving your body the food it needs:

  • How eating healthy has nothing to do with eating less
  • The long-term damage it has on your hormones
  • The negative effect it has on your metabolism
  • What she found most helpful for recovery
  • Her best advice for those who are struggling with an eating disorder now, or are struggling to recover from one

So many of us are hyper focused on the extra five or ten pounds we need lose or that six pack we think we need to have, and it causes us to develop a highly destructive relationship with our bodies. We become so concerned about the way our body looks, we completely take our bodies for granted. We take for granted our ability to run, walk and even just move. Our negative-self talk surrounding our body image prevents us from celebrating how lucky we are to have bodies that can do all the things they can do.

In this episode of Coffee & Kettlebells, I chat with the CEO of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Lynn Vos, who helps put this into perspective for us. Lynn explains the physical limitations those struggling with neuromuscular diseases battle daily. When we realize that not everyone has the ability to move, it makes us realize what a real privilege it is and shows us how fortunate we truly are.

I hope after listening to this episode, you will stop and ask yourself, is having an “extra five pounds” really that big of a deal? Is having that six pack really that important? At the end of the day, you have the freedom to move your muscles and that alone should be enough to love your body.

If you are touched by this episode, and feel inspired by those battling neuromuscular diseases, join me in donating to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Let’s be their muscle together and raise money to help them experience the greatness life has to offer, despite their physical limitations. If you are ready to celebrate your body’s endless capabilities, I would love for you to donate here.

Growing up with a parent who was in recovery from drinking, Owen knew the signs of a functional alcoholic and began to recognize these patterns within herself. • You can start by taking a step back and getting organized by solidifying exactly what you need to get done.
  • After prioritizing your to-do list, start blocking out time within your busy schedule to tackle your different projects.
  • Overwhelming feelings of stress can also stem from not being in control or from feeling uncertain.

JJ Virgin, celebrity nutrition and fitness expert, joins us on today’s episode to help us uncover the hidden factors that are causing weight gain. Many people who are struggling to lose weight may not realize that food sensitivities and intolerances can be drastically impacting their health. If you find that you’re struggling to lose weight and the “calories in, calories out” method just isn’t working, you should take potential food intolerances into account by taking a food sensitivity test.

What You'll Learn:

  • There is a surplus of weight loss information available online, which can be incredibly overwhelming to those who are trying to start a weight loss journey.
  • The calories in, calories out method is a myth that can damage your metabolism and mindset when trying to lose weight.
  • One hidden cause of weight gain is food intolerance and sensitivities. These intolerances cause inflammation which affect insulin resistance, then leading your body to stop burning stored fat.
  • A few common foods that patients are intolerant of include dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten, soy, corn, peanuts, sugar, and artificial sweeteners.
  • One way to identify that you have a food intolerance can be found in delayed responses. A few of these indicators include feeling fatigued, getting breakouts, feeling bloated, etc.
  • If you perform a food sensitivity test and find that you’re sensitive to multiple foods, you should seek out a functional medicine doctor and focus on healing your gut and detoxifying your system.
  • A list of popular alternatives for those with food sensitivities to gluten, eggs, dairy, soy, etc.

Today I’m talking about weight loss vs. happiness. A lot of us prioritize weight loss and wanting to look good, rather than focusing on happiness and our quality of life. There’s a point when healthy habits such as having a nutritious diet and a exercise regime can become unhealthy, when we obsess over them and let them control the decisions surrounding our social life and family. A healthy lifestyle is meant to make you thrive. It’s not meant make you sacrifice the things that you love.

What You’ll Learn:

  • If your “healthy habits” are making you obsessed, you’re headed down the wrong path
  • Happiness is not about external factors such as your appearance, it comes from within
  • Weight loss is more complicated than calories in vs. calories out
  • If you’re stopping yourself from seeing friends or family because you’re afraid you will indulge, that’s a problem
  • How to make happiness your priority instead of weight loss
  • How to determine your “Why”

In today’s episode, I’m sitting down with Cassy Garcia, a published author, certified nutrition consultant and editor of Fed and Fit. We're discussing how to lose weight without diets, living a healthier life and breaking the dieting cycle. After years of dieting without long term results, Cassy began to consider the quality of the food rather than the quantity. Due to this, she was inspired to create Fed and Fit and continues to help people drop harmful diets and embrace sustainable lifestyles.

What You'll Learn:

  • After years of yo-yo dieting and an emphasis on losing weight, Cassy Joy Garcia began to focus on health and the quality of the foods she was consuming.
  • Just a few reasons why you should not go on a diet, include: it can be detrimental to your relationship with food, everyone has different nutritional and dietary needs, it isn’t sustainable, it can drive you further away from intuitive eating, etc.
  • Instead of dieting, you should focus on your overall health and create a custom plan that fits your unique dietary and nutritional needs.
  • If you’re caught in a cycle of dieting, you can break this mentality by reminding yourself that your needs are unique and following your intuition.
  • How to maintain a lower weight after you’ve reached your goals.
  • If you’re looking for a place to start, you can take baby steps by staying hydrated and prioritizing your sleeping schedule.

Athena Laz is a licensed psychologist and a columnist for Cosmopolitan Magazine who recently created a program that is specially designed to help you overcome your inner critic. If you find that you’re struggling to cope with a harsh inner critic, you can begin addressing this by being more mindful of thought patterns in your day-to-day life. It can also help to take a step back and recognize what emotions you’re feeling, instead of falling back on defense mechanisms and being reactive.

What You'll Learn:

  • An inner critic is the voice within your mind that tells you that you aren’t good enough and can also target your insecurities.
  • Don’t place your value on external factors (wealth, looks, career, etc.), because you will always be at risk of handing over your power. When you give away your power to other things or people, you can lose control of your life and personal happiness.
  • Recognize the difference between having goals and placing your self worth on external factors.
  • Affirmations and a positive attitude can be helpful, but they can also be used to cover up how you truly feel.
  • Be mindful with how you interact on social media, which can kickstart a comparative mindset.
  • Being aware of your emotions can be a great place to start when trying to overcome an inner critic. It can also help to talk about these negative emotions in a supportive, safe environment.

Dr. Will Cole, a leading functional medicine expert who specializes in identifying the root cause of chronic diseases, returns to the podcast to discuss thyroid health. Maintaining a healthy thyroid is essential because it has a wide-reaching impact on our health and is linked to mood, brain function, digestion, and more. If you’re struggling with thyroid issues, try addressing them through a functional medicine approach. This will tackle the root of the cause and has the least amount of side effects.

What You'll Learn:

  • The most common types of thyroid issues are hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is caused by an overactive thyroid, while hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone.
  • As a society, we need to look at the underlying causes of thyroid issues and illnesses, instead of merely managing the symptoms.
  • Thyroid hormone physiology is incredibly complex and the conventional lab results don’t give patients a complete view of their health.
  • While conventional doctors are essential and necessary for crisis care, chronic care is beginning to fall short, leaving patients looking for more.

Tune in to be inspired, motivated and empowered to keep moving forward in your life, too, despite your current circumstances! In this episode, I sit down to chat with Burn Boot Camp Hanesport member, Jilian Grahl. After collapsing one day, Grahl was rushed to the hospital and was eventually diagnosed with Arnold-Chiari Malformation which began a decade-long struggle through surgeries and chronic pain. Before this incident, Grahl felt fulfilled by her work as a police officer because it allowed her to help people and ensure that others were safe, happy, and protected. After her diagnosis, this was abruptly taken from her and she struggled to find a purpose that left her feeling fulfilled. But, she soon found a new purpose in sharing her story and helping others with chronic pain and those who are diagnosed with life threatening medical conditions. Key Takeaway: You aren’t in control of what life throws at you, but you are in control of how you react to it and fight against it. Highlights: * How Jilian overcame medical obstacles and fought to move forward without dwelling in the past. * There’s a light on the other side of your struggle, you just have to keep fighting in order to get there. * How hitting rock bottom motivated Jilian to rebuild her life. * Why it is so important to find your passion and purpose. * Why you shouldn't compare yourself to others and what they have on the outside.

Carly Stein is on the podcast today. Carly is the founder and CEO of Beekeeper’s Naturals, a company that creates natural, pesticide-free bee products. Stein’s journey first began during a trip abroad that led to her contracting tonsillitis. While she faced the prospect of surgery, she desperately searched for a different solution and was able to find a pharmacy that offered bee products. These bee products allowed her to avoid surgery and enjoy the rest of her time abroad. Now she has made it her mission to bring these products to the United States and give others access to natural, alternative medicines. Stein is also an advocate for the preservation of the global bee population and works to support hives across North America.

Key Takeaway: By using natural, pesticide-free products that are consistently tested, Beekeeper’s naturals hopes to improve the health of both bees and humans.

Highlights:

  • Beekeepers Naturals obsessively test their bee products to ensure that no pesticides or harmful chemicals affect the bees.
  • Bee products can be an excellent alternative medication for people with autoimmune conditions or other medical conditions.
  • Carly Stein, who has an autoimmune disease, was struggling for years before she found a solution in Propolis. Propolis is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, soothing on the digestive system, and good for gut health.
  • In your professional life, you should have the courage to take a leap of faith and do something that is both scary and rewarding.
  • Pesticides are incredibly damaging to bees and we’re still not sure what harm they’re doing to us in the long term.
  • Bee Pollen, also known as nature's multivitamin, increases endurance, raises energy and is a great source of protein.
  • Raw honey can help fend off the effects of food poisoning, fights germs, and promotes relaxation.

I’m here today to talk about Macros and I ask the question should you be counting your Macros? Macros are Macronutrients and they consist of carbs, fats and protein. You can count your macros using percentages or by grams. Counting macros is a great tool to have in your toolbox when you’re learning to eat healthier. You might be gaining weight just by eating too much of one macro. When counting macros, you know exactly what’s going in your body and it’s helpful with keeping you accountable. As you progress in your health journey and learn how to eat healthy, you’ll get a solid understanding of portion size and know what feels good and works in your body. When you know what works for you, you can stop counting your macros and instead focus on eating intuitively.

Key Takeaway: Counting your Macros during the beginning of your health journey is a great way to learn portion size and can help you with accountability. As you progress in your health journey you’ll experiment with different levels of carbs, fats and protein and you’ll learn what works best for you.

I’m so excited to jump back into the world of hormones with a returning guest – Dr. Jolene Brighten! Dr. Jolene Brighten is a functional naturopathic doctor, nutritional biochemist, and the author of the newly released book, Beyond the Pill. Within this episode, we discuss the science behind hormone imbalances and natural ways that we can fix such imbalances. Just a few factors that can throw your hormones out of balance include gut health, liver health, stress, sleep, and food. In addition, we also face environmental factors, such as toxins in cleaning and beauty products, that can also cause hormone imbalances. If you find that you’re struggling with an imbalance, you can look into the hormone detox kit offered by Dr. Jolene Brighten, which takes you through a full-body detox involving small changes in food, lifestyle, and supplements.

Key Takeaway: By understanding any hormone imbalances you may have, you can make small changes in your lifestyle that will ensure that you’re healthier later in life.

Highlights:

  • Discussing ways to naturally balance your hormones without the use of hormonal birth control
  • Gut health, liver health, exercise, sleep, stress, postpartum, and food all contribute to causing imbalances with our hormones.
  • Adrenal glands, thyroid, and sex hormones play a huge role in hormone production. You need to have strong foundational health within your adrenal glands and thyroid before focusing on sex hormones.
  • In addition to toxins in beauty products and cleaning chemicals, hormonal birth control can also cause your liver to work overtime.
  • By over exercising or overtraining and not consuming enough calories, it may be more difficult to lose weight because your body goes into starvation mode.
  • Jolene Brighten provides a hormone reset detox, which is a program that takes you through a full-body detox involving food, lifestyle, and supplements. This detox also highlights small everyday changes and your mindset.

Today we’re talking about taking things personally. We all can be selfish and assume that everything has to do with us. But when others are cutting you down and being rude to you in the workplace or in society, it’s often because they have an internal conflict and they’re taking it out on you. We don’t know what everyone is going through in their personal life and maybe your success and/or actions have caused jealousy or insecurity in another person and they lashed out at you because they feel inferior. Everyone has bad days, so stop thinking that you did something wrong or that they feel a certain way about you. Their lashing out is most likely because they’re upset with themselves in that moment. When you come across someone who’s being rude or short with you, I encourage you to confront them about it a non-aggressive way and nip it in the bud before you begin to hold a grudge. In this episode, I’m going to discuss different areas in our lives where we can stop taking things personally and stop thinking everyone else’s actions are directed at us. I assure you that once you do this, you’ll be able to live your life with greater ease and more joy and happiness.

Key Takeaway: When you stop taking things personally, you will experience much more joy and happiness in your life.

Highlights:

  • Projecting your own anger or insecurities onto others
  • Watching others succeed can cause your own jealousy to come out
  • How to develop thick skin
  • Take a breath before acting on your emotions
  • When someone is rude to you, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was something you did

A lot of us say “yes” to things that we really don’t want to do, myself included. Today I’m talking about why it’s okay to say “no.” If you want more time, freedom and energy, you have to start saying “no” to the things that don’t serve you and your goals. You don’t have to make excuses and explain yourself. It’s okay to just say “no” and go on with your life. Staying true to yourself will allow you to live the life you desire.

Key Takeaway: Saying “no” is the ultimate self-care

Highlights:

  • Saying “yes” because we think it makes us a good person
  • Feeling drained because of saying “yes” to everyone and not leaving personal time
  • Take the time to do what makes you happy
  • Evaluate if saying “yes” brings you closer to your goal or further away from your goal
  • Say “yes” if it makes you feel your best
  • Determining your core values

Today I sit down with Catharine Arnston, the CEO, chief science officer and founder of ENERGYbits. We discuss the health benefits of an unlikely superfood: algae. Arnston first became inspired to start this company 10 years ago, when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. When her doctor insisted that she begin an alkaline diet, Arnston began researching and stumbled across algae, which is the most nutrient-dense superfood in the world. Since then, Arnston has dedicated her life to teaching the public just how beneficial algae can be for your overall health and well-being. These benefits are largely due to the nutrient profile present within algae, as it provides your body with all the vitamins and minerals that it needs to stay healthy. All of the algae sold by ENERGYbits are ketogenic and high in protein, contain essential fatty acids and provide essential nutrients that most people don’t receive in their normal diets.

Key Takeaway: Algae is a superfood that can assist with overall health and wellness, meeting athletic goals, receiving your daily vitamins and minerals, improving your immune system, fighting chronic illnesses and much more.

Highlights:

  • ENERGYbits sells algae tablets that provide energy, satisfy hunger, help after workouts, assist with wellness and much more.
  • In the past, the United Nations has declared that algae could be the solution to world hunger because it’s incredibly nutrient-dense and is a sustainable crop.
  • Legislators are also beginning to realize the power behind algae, as they recently passed the Algae Agriculture Act, which encourages farmers to grow it.
  • Spirulina gives you energy because it contains B vitamins, your daily requirement of K2, protein, essential minerals, amino acids and more. In addition, it contains no added sugar, dairy, gluten or caffeine.
  • Chlorella is a wellness algae that gives you all the benefits of plants and none of the potential side effects. This form of algae heals cell walls, pulls out toxins, reintroduces minerals, builds the immune system and helps prevent heart diseases.
  • An in-depth explanation between the different products that can be found throughout ENERGYbits
  • The Centers for Disease Control says that most chronic illnesses stem from our bodies not receiving the nutrients and support they need. In order to assist with this, you can turn to algae in order to ensure that your body is receiving all of the vitamins, minerals and more.

In this solocast, I discuss why you should ditch the scale for good and how you can replace it with healthier alternatives. The scale has traditionally been viewed as the best way to measure one’s health; however, it isn’t the best metric because it doesn’t take your overall health into account. Your typical scale doesn’t measure other influential aspects of your health, including nutrition, eating habits, exercise and sleep. If you’re currently on a weight loss journey, you should consider ditching the scale entirely and instead focusing on weekly progress photos and measuring your body fat percentage.

Key Takeaway: If you’re on a weight loss journey, consider ditching the scale because it can’t give you an accurate picture of your overall health and the number on the scale can become an obsession.

Highlights:

  • You should ditch the scale because it isn’t the best metric to measure your health, nutrition, exercise or overall fitness.
  • It is possible to lose body fat while gaining weight because muscle weighs more than fat. This is because muscle is dense, increases your metabolism and burns more calories.
  • A list of reasons you should ditch the scale and instead use more accurate metrics that will ensure that you don’t get fixated on a number on the scale
  • Listen to the cues that your body is giving you. Instead of focusing on what you physically look like, it might be helpful to focus on what you want your life to look like.

In the first episode of a two-part series, I sit down with Dr. Jolene Brighten and dive into the topic of hormonal birth control and post-birth control syndrome. Dr. Brighten is a functional naturopathic doctor, nutritional biochemist and author of the newly released book, Beyond the Pill. In her new book, Dr. Brighten strives to provide women with accurate information regarding birth control, show support for those on the pill and offer tools that will balance hormones without the use of hormonal birth control. Dr. Brighten wrote this book as a way to educate women on their bodies while also fighting against myths and misinformation regarding menstruation and fertility. In addition, this episode discusses how women can start dismantling the gender bias within the medical industry by being aware of gaslighting, tracking their symptoms and being informed of medicinal alternatives.

Key Takeaway: By giving women all of the available information regarding hormonal birth control, they can make empowering decisions regarding their own health.

Highlights:

  • Beyond the Pill by Dr. Jolene Brighten gives readers information on birth control, supports women who choose to go on the pill and gives them the tools to balance their hormones through natural avenues.
  • Women should be learning about fertility, menstruation and their own bodies long before their first period comes. This helps them feel empowered and allows them to be active participants in their health.
  • Many women struggle when going off hormonal birth control and go through post-birth control syndrome. Unfortunately, traditional medicine has largely dismissed this, even though women have complained about post-birth control syndrome symptoms since the introduction of hormonal birth control.
  • A breakdown of what happens within your body on each day of your menstrual cycle
  • In order to gain a better understanding of your health, you can begin by tracking your menstrual cycle and recording your symptoms.
  • Medical gender bias is especially present in women’s medicine and hormonal birth control. Women can fight it by taking their health into their own hands, tracking their symptoms and being informed of their health and alternatives to hormonal birth control.

Courtney Burish is back on the show today. Courtney is a coach with the Primal Health Institute and works one on one with clients through a series of nutrition and lifestyle protocols. Today we’re getting into the weeds about dairy. Dairy’s very controversial in the health world and confuses almost everyone.

We know that most dairy products you buy in the grocery store are inflammatory and over processed. These products lead to digestion issues, mucus build up, contribute to autoimmune disease and even hormone related cancers. However, there are some types of full fat unadulterated dairy that have health benefits, which you can include into your diet a few times a month. In this episode Courtney teaches us which types of dairy we should incorporate if we absolutely want to keep eating dairy. We also discuss dairy alternatives, for those of you who are trying to get off dairy products.

Key Takeaway: Avoid nonfat and over processed homogenized dairy. If you’re going to eat dairy, consume full fat and raw dairy products.

Highlights:

  • The gray areas of Dairy
  • Some types of dairy cause inflammation
  • If you eat dairy, try and consume full fat unadulterated dairy
  • Doctors’ dairy recommendations
  • Pasteurization and homogenization of dairy products
  • Hormone related cancers
  • About 75% of the population is intolerant to dairy
  • Dairy elimination protocol
  • Checking ingredient lists for traces of dairy
  • Dairy alternatives
  • Goats milk and sheep’s milk
  • Addictive qualities of dairy
  • Dairy myths

Welcome back to another episode of Coffee & Kettlebells. Today’s episode is all about the power of compliments. Often times in our day-to-day lives we see people and have kind or positive thoughts about them, but we don’t say anything. This might be out of fear of their reaction, or feeling venerable within ourselves. Though it might be uncomfortable at first, giving out compliments has to power to change someone’s day, week or life. It requires little effort on our end and will make you and the person you give the complement to, light up.

Key Takeaway: Start verbalizing the positive things you’re seeing in others. Step outside of your comfort zone and extend a compliment to someone else. Start today.

Highlights:

  • Feeling vulnerable giving out compliments
  • Acknowledging things in others doesn’t detract from things about yourself
  • Uplifting others uplifts you
  • The energy you put out into the universe is the energy you get back
  • Auditing yourself and realize why you’re not giving compliments
  • Complimenting strangers but also your family and the people in your inner circle
  • Verbalizing your feelings to others strengthens your bond

Nicole is a holistic nutritionist and wellness coach, who specializes in treating hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, eating disorders and much more. Today’s we’re discussing PCOS “Polycystic ovary syndrome” The Mayo Clinic’s definition of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. • Being diagnosed with PCOS
  • Hormone disrupters
  • Balancing hormones naturally vs. using Birth Control

Today’s episode is Part 2 of episode 64, on how I overcame my body obsession. Chasing goals and having big aspirations is great. It’s important to take control of your life and act deliberately on the things that you want. However, when you begin to become obsessed, it can pull you away from you happiness, family and friends. This is especially relevant in fitness world. If you begin to feel that you’re missing out on your life because you’re worried that participating in your community will distract you from your diet and exercise goals you need to reassess your purpose. In this episode I answer listener questions and address how I overcame my eating and exercising obsession by re-evaluating what was important to me.

Key Takeaway: It’s good to be driven and have serious goals but not at the cost of missing out on your life and not participating with your family and friends.

Highlights:

  • Finding balance between reaching your goals and becoming obsessed
  • Reaching goals but also being pulled apart from family and friends
  • When your goals begin to take away from the quality of your life
  • Saying no to things you really want to say yes to

Self reflection is the first step to creating a better version of yourself. In today’s episode, I’m doing a deep dive into different personality types with Torre Mower, a co-creator of the viral Instagram account @socialenneagram. This account examines the Enneagram, which is a personality typing system that classifies different characteristics with a number ranging from 1 to 9. With Torre’s expertise, we gain some valuable insights on the traits within each of these numbers and the vibrant community surrounding the Enneagram. But this isn’t your typical personality test. On the contrary, this can be used as a powerful tool of self reflection and can provide insights on the behavior of others.

Key Takeaway: The Enneagram is a tool that can be used to reflect on your actions, but it should never be used to justify negative behaviors.

Highlights:

  • Creating a conversation around the social aspects of the Enneagram
  • Torre and her husband, Justin, run the Instagram account @socialenneagram and provide classes on the complexities of the Enneagram
  • The Enneagram is made up of nine different personality types
  • One of the easiest ways to identify your number is to research the negative traits of each number
  • Ground rules surrounding this community include: don’t type other people, no number is better or worse than another number, and the Enneagram should not be used as a scapegoat for negative behaviors
  • A break down of the healthy and unhealthy traits of each number
  • Finding your number and using it as a tool to create a better version of yourself

Through darkness comes light and on today’s episode I’m talking to Molly Stillman about how hitting rock bottom helped her rise to the top. Molly is the host of the Business with Purpose podcast as well as the Still Being Molly blog, both aimed towards inspiring women to live a life of purpose.

While Molly is now a successful business owner and leader in the women’s community, life wasn’t always this way. Molly’s mother died during Molly’s senior year of high school. It was due to Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam where she was working as a nurse to our troops. This led her down a dark path where she used spending money as coping mechanism. After getting $36,000 dollars in debt and still not having processed her grief, Molly felt hopeless, alone and like she had hit rock bottom.

Key Takeaway: Understand that it is ok to ask for help.
