The Abundant Beans Podcast: Recent Episodes

Jamie O'Kane

I created this podcast so that I could do one of my favorite things; talk to business owners.

I love hearing about the obstacles and successes of business ownership. I look for inspiration, community and tidbits to apply to my business in the experiences of others and I wanted to share those conversations.

Our guests are from all stages of business ownership and I think each one has the ability to give us all something to aspire and inspire to in pushing ourselves and our businesses forward! I will also be providing insight, expertise and answering questions on taxes & accounting to keep things fresh and exciting.

Yes, I think taxes and accounting are exciting dont judge me.

Let's ask our favorite CPA!

For our newest series, Jamie is going to review some advice on TaxTok (a.k.a. the corners of TikTok where taxes are discussed). Can you/should you take tax advice from strangers on the internet? How much knowledge can people fit into a 60 second video? More importantly, how accurate is the advice that they're giving? Luckily, our favorite CPA is here to clarify and give us some insight. Remember, y'all: you should always consult with a trusted tax professional before you make any tax decisions.

Stop wasting your time and your money.

It happens to all of us from time to time. We get stuck in a rut, running through our processes the same way we’ve always done them. It works, but does it work well? This is why we’ve got to stop and ask ourselves: is this the highest and best use of our time and resources?

Today’s guest, Rachel Lemcke, is here to talk about improving the efficiency of veterinary practices, starting with the laboratory. Rachel is the owner of Amwell Data Services, a full service independent veterinary laboratory consulting agency. She formed Amwell Data Services to help give veterinarians and their teams more margin with the larger goal of helping make careers in veterinary medicine more sustainable.

Let’s get you to where you want to be!

As we start wrapping up 2022, we begin focusing more on 2023. Have you started setting goals for the next year? If you have or haven’t, here is a short list some of our favorite clips of things to inspire you to think a little bit deeper and set bigger goals.

1: Think about increasing your prices. Do your research! Ask your team of experts what is possible for you!

2: Be honest about who you are, what you can do, and what you aspire to be.

  1. Treat your people well and focus more on the work culture you’re building in your business. You can train people to do what you need them to do, but you can’t change their personality.

  2. Know your purpose and know your limiting beliefs. Identify what matters the most and as much of that as possible!

  3. When it comes to marketing, put the focus on the things that YOU own: your website, your email list, and your brand. Social media is fantastic for getting your name out there, but it is ultimately not something that you have any control over.

We hope this small list gives you some frame of reference for what you can do to grow in 2023. We believe in you!

"Ehhh, all that ERC filing hassle won't be worth it for my small business!"

Not convinced that it's worth it? Let's take a look!

You might be thinking, "What?! Another ERC episode? Are you serious, Jamie??"

YES! I am so serious. In fact, today's episode is the first of a short series that will highlight some of our clients' success stories with the Employee Retention Tax Credit. We've been talking about this quite a bit lately, but for good reason! Several thousand to several HUNDRED thousand dollars could be waiting for you to claim. Imagine what a difference that much money would make for your business, your employees, and yourself!

Today, we'll be talking about one of our clients' experience with the ERC and the result. We'll talk about every step we took in our research, how the client qualified for the ERC, and the amount they were able to claim (spoiler: it's a lot).

Let's talk about the Employee Retention Tax Credit!

Our completely informal polling of tax professionals indicates that small businesses are overlooking this pandemic payroll tax credit that could give them on average $50,000-$75,000 in cash to move towards their goals. I know it sounds like a gimmick, but y'all know we don't roll like that. One of Jamie's very favorite things is helping business owners grow and thrive.

Stoke that fire!

The veterinary industry is anticipated to grow rapidly in the next ten years. As many young DVMs enter into their careers, it’s good for them to weigh their options. Do they have the entrepreneurial spirit it takes to run their own practice? Have they done the work to figure out their mission and their values? Do they know how to align all of that with their practice? Today, we have some “food for thought” clips that we think will help young vets explore these questions.

And how can you keep things going smoothly?

Today’s episode is all about the health and wellbeing of your work and your business! Organizational culture was a hot topic at the start of the pandemic, but the conversation has died down as we began to slowly emerge from the pandemic. That means that now is the perfect time to do a quick check-up on the organizational culture that you worked so hard to create — not as many people are putting in that work right now and that gives you the advantage.

What is work going to look like post-pandemic? How can you ensure that you’ve created a sustainable culture of work/life balance for yourself and your employees? How are you and your employees going to stay motivated? When is the last time you evaluated your prices? It’s time to check the pulse of your ecosystem!

Growing your brand and supporting Ukrainians

Today's episode is a bit of a throwback! Rytis Lauris was our guest in 2020. Rytis is the CEO and co-founder of Omnisend, a powerful marketing automation platform that is focused on moving eCommerce marketers beyond the generic email marketing tools. Omnisend is designed for small to mid-size eCommerce businesses to communicate with their customers through their most preferred channels. It enables businesses to run successful, profitable marketing while ensuring that customers have a seamless, unified experience.

Omnisend has grown quite a bit since this interview and now has employees based in several different countries: Lithuania, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Omnisend has put out several calls to action for people to donate what they can to international relief efforts for the Ukrainian people. The Abundant Beans team would like to echo Omnisend's sentiments and boost the signal. You’ve got to keep checking back in and answering them. Add those questions to your yearly maintenance process! This week, we’ve got a compilation of clips that we think are fantastic reminders for all business owners, but especially those in veterinary medicine.

What sets you apart?

To a layperson, marketing seems to be akin to fishing with a cast net: chuck the net out and see what gets pulled back. That kind of thinking is an oversimplification of both. Just as cast net fishing requires smooth motions and a targeted area to aim for, so too does marketing.

You might be asking, “What’s all this about fishing? And how do I know where to aim my marketing??” First, it’s a fun analogy and we’re all about having fun around here. To answer your second question, you create a target for yourself by deciding what problems you’re good at solving. Finding your niche helps you zero-in on those pain points that you enjoy resolving AND it helps you find the right kind of clients for your business. Today’s episode is filled with snippets of excellent advice on niching down and figuring out what sets you apart from the crowd.

Ace Chat, a leader in live chat operations for business websites, has been connecting prospects on the precipice of buying and real, live humans to help them make the decision to buy. Beth Bogan, the owner, is just like many business owners - she is systematically working through different processes to find what works, and then refining it to what works the best.

We all have heard the most often repeated argument against online shopping: "I like to go into the store and get that in-person experience." Beth and her team have been focused on creating that experience by allowing your potential and current customers to chat with a live human from the comfort of their own home. They don't even need to get dressed!

I can dress this up with funny analogies and metaphors all day long, but here is the bottom line: live chat works! Studies show that 38% of people say that after having a live chat with a brand, they made a purchase; on top of that that, 42% of people say prefer Live Chat while ONLY 16% say they want these conversations to take place on social media.

Beth is a real business leader, elevating her team and clients over any silly ego nonsense, and today, I am proud to have her as a guest on the Abundant Beans Podcast!

To learn more and to access our ERC Eligibility Estimator, please visit: Employee Tax Credit - https://abundantbeans.com/erc/

Are you interested in claiming the ERC? We're happy to help you! To access our Employee Retention Credit Analysis & Filing Services, please visit: ERC Analysis & Filing Services - https://abundantbeans.com/erc-analysis-filings/

Where does your money go?

In the last year, we’ve all had to quickly adapt to the chaos and uncertainty that came along with COVID-19. As the pandemic begins to subside (knock on wood!), we’re all re-examining the changes we’ve made and considering what will continue to be important to us. Do we still need all of these apps we’ve signed up for in the last year? Have our telecommunication needs changed? How can we find the line between goods and services that are “worth every penny” and those that are “money vampires” for our businesses?

Our guest this week is Jim Kiernan, a Strategic Partner at Schooley Mitchell. Schooley Mitchell is a cost reduction consulting business that helps reduce expenses in the areas of telecommunications, shipping, credit card processing, waste collection and e-Signature services. He looks for cost savings opportunities to make sure that when you bring money into your business, you’re not sending it straight out the back door to pay for things you don’t actually need. Just like all of us here at Abundant Beans, Jim believes you should keep more of what you make and invest in your goals.

You might be thinking that nobody would want to breach the cyber security of a veterinary clinic, your IT people have you covered, or your clinic is too small to be at risk. Our guest this week is here to disprove all of those misconceptions and talk about the steps you can take to protect yourself and your clients.

Clint (C.J.) Latham is the owner of Lucca Veterinary Data Security. This is his second appearance on Abundant Beans Podcast! While working and speaking with veterinary hospitals all across the country, Clint saw a drastic increase in the number cyber attacks to the veterinary industry. 100 episodes and not slowing down any time soon!

In 2018, Jamie had an idea for a podcast: talking to entrepreneurs and business owners about their experiences. She loves listening to people discuss their obstacles and successes, learning what drives them, and hearing any advice or inspirational tidbit that they have to offer. She was already having these conversations and knew how valuable they could be, and she wanted to share them with other entrepreneurs and business owners. What better way than a podcast! In the past 99 episodes, we have had so many wonderful guests and we have learned so much from them. Today Jamie covers some of our favorite moments from the podcast so far. We want to thank you all for your support and we are excited to keep bringing valuable content to you. As always, be abundant!

You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to make informed decisions.

Today our guest is Derick Van Ness. Derick is the founder and wealth strategist at Big Life Financial. Big Life Financial is focused on removing the mystery and misinformation surrounding money and financial strategy so people can live their biggest life. Derick believes that each person has something unique and valuable to contribute to the world, but that most people are never able to express that gift due to fear, doubt, or worry related to money. He wants to help people eradicate that fear and fundamentally change the way that people think about and utilize money within the next generation. Derick mentions that the tax code is about as long as the entire Harry Potter series. That’s wild! You don’t need to know every part of the tax code to benefit from tax planning. Like Derick says, that’s why you bring in a specialist to educate you and help you make informed decisions for yourself. Today’s quote is: “If you don’t know what you’re doing, the chances of success are a lot lower.”

Let’s cut straight to it. We know that content is King/Queen, and we all know that we need to be producing it. We get lost with all of the details though right? Where does it go? Who are we talking to? What do they even care to hear? etc, etc. Kelly Glover helps us cut through all of that, and provides an understanding of why each individual piece of content is helpful, and how all of the pieces of content come together to help propel you forward.

Can you cultivate resilience?

Josh Vaisman is back! Josh is a positive psychology practitioner and co-founder of Flourish Veterinary Consulting. He believes that all veterinary professionals deserve to feel fulfilled by their work each and every day. Additionally, he believes that people are inherently resilient and we can function much better if we acknowledge the less than ideal situation, embrace the suck, and look for what we can control by asking ourselves, “What else is here?” Josh knows that in times of crisis, effective leaders don’t put on airs of false positivity. Instead, they are vulnerable and they embrace the reality of the situation. Effective leaders give people the space to honor their humanity and approach crises with honesty and vulnerability. This sort of reaction to uncertainty creates a great environment for teams to look into what they do have control over and what they can collaborate on to make things better. Resilient leaders focus on sharing a lot more and micromanaging less when chaos ensues.

As we continue to adapt and adjust to the changes brought on by COVID-19, we can be setting ourselves up for success in the future. If you’ve been thinking about implementing telehealth for your veterinary practice, now is the time to do it!

Bruce Truman is the Vice President of Sales & Marketing at BabelBark. BabelBark is an excellent health management tool for pet parents, veterinarians, and pet care providers. The BabelBark team recognized that many pet owners, especially millennial pet owners, want engagement from their pet caregivers. They designed their app to enable continuity of care and communication between pet parents and all of their pet caregivers. Technology should be used to give veterinarians a broader reach, but it should also be used to help veterinarians avoid burnout. Bruce believes BabelBark can be used by veterinarians to set up telehealth, to book future in-person visits, and to ensure the health and safety of their staff and clients — especially during this unusual moment in history.

Work doesn’t have to be painful! Josh Allan Dykstra believes that work should energize you.

I think it goes without saying that we are in the midst of the greatest change to work that we have seen in 100 years. Right now, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we see entire corporations temporarily closing, moving entirely to remote work, and more than that, for the last 10 years new workers have been sharing a view on work that simply didn’t exist for the generation before them. Work can, and in my view should be, something that energizes you. You should gain a sense of accomplishment from what it is that you are doing, and not something that is your penance for simply existing.

Josh and his team have developed systems, philosophies, and massive successes with helping medium to large organizations move a bit quicker to adapt to the changing mindset of the current workforce. “Work has never looked this way before, but it can.”
