Joe Dumars makes his first major hire as the lead basketball executive for the New Orleans Pelicans:

➡️ Jamahl Mosley

After building the Orlando Magic into one of the NBA’s top defensive teams and developing stars like Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs, Mosley now takes over a Pelicans roster built around:

  • Zion Williamson
  • Dejounte Murray
  • Trey Murphy
  • Jeremiah Fears
  • Derik Queen
  • Yves Missi
  • Saddiq Bey

But is this the perfect hire for New Orleans… or are there red flags Pelicans fans should be concerned about?

Key Topics in This Episode

1️⃣ What to Watch in the Final 16 Games

With 8 home games and 8 road games, plus three back-to-backs, we’re watching:

• Can Dejounte Murray unlock the Pelicans’ fast break offense?
• Will the defense show more accountability vs playoff teams?
• What does the rotation look like moving forward?
• Are DeAndre Jordan’s minutes more valuable than Karlo Matkovic’s development?

2️⃣ What We’ve Learned About Borrego’s Lineups

James Borrego has hinted that tough rotation decisions are coming now that the roster is healthier.

Current lineup trends:

• Yves Missi should start at center
• Herb Jones may become a matchup-based starter
• Saddiq Bey’s impact keeps growing
• The rookies may be best used off the bench
• Karlo Matkovic remains the only shooting big on the roster

3️⃣ The Pelicans’ Hierarchy Problem

Borrego recently mentioned that the team hasn’t fully defined its on-court hierarchy.

Our thoughts:

• Zion Williamson must be the focal point of the offense
• Zion’s motor and consistency must improve
• Dejounte Murray should elevate everyone around him
• Trey Murphy has All-Star upside as a play finisher
• The rookies are developing but not ready to lead yet

4️⃣ Offseason Changes We’d Consider

Beyond internal development, we discuss potential offseason changes:

• Uniform redesign ideas (Tulane, LSU & Saints comparisons)
• Whether James Borrego deserves the permanent head coaching job
• Why Jordan Poole’s $32M contract might not fit the future

Pelicans Fans — What Do You Think?

Should the Pelicans keep building around Zion, or is a bigger roster shake-up coming?

The New Orleans Pelicans fall to 2–11 after a 124–106 loss to the Golden State Warriors on the City Edition court — a game defined by sloppy turnovers, slow defensive rotations, and a rough first quarter where Moses Moody scored 21 points.

The New Orleans Pelicans are 2-0 in their last two games, winning their first back-to-back of the season — and both were clutch wins:
• 101–99 @ Mavericks
• 116–112 vs Hornets

This comes after:
• Three 30-point blowout losses (Boston, OKC, Denver)
• Three clutch losses (Memphis, San Antonio, Clippers)

And the Pelicans are doing it without three starters:
• Zion Williamson (hamstring, out 5–9 days)
• Jordan Poole (quad, out 7–10 days)
• Yves Missi (illness, day-to-day)

Yet the locker room hasn’t folded.
The effort, connectivity, and defensive rotations look improved.

So… have the Pelicans found something real, or is this just a lighter schedule?

The New Orleans Pelicans finally showed some fight in a 126-124 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers — and this one felt different. The Pelicans punched back, Zion took over in the second half, Jordan Poole thrived as a 6th man, and the new starting lineup may actually make sense going forward.

The New Orleans Pelicans were embarrassed in Denver, losing 88-122 to the Nuggets — and it wasn’t just the scoring margin. It was effort. Identity. Energy.

Add in Trey Murphy’s continued struggles, rotational chaos, no defensive intensity, and the worst third-quarter collapse of the season, and the Pelicans look nothing like the team that spent the entire summer preaching accountability, effort, and culture.

The New Orleans Pelicans fall to the Boston Celtics after a late fourth-quarter collapse, and the headlines aren’t kind — Zion Williamson was ruled out with a left toe contusion while Boston finished on a 30-4 run to seal the win.

Even with the score lopsided, this game exposed deeper issues for New Orleans — effort, execution, and accountability.

This loss raises the question: Is this just early-season fatigue or deeper coaching issues?

The Pelicans' 2024-25 schedule has arrived, and hosts Raphael and Garrick Rattler dig into what might be the NBA's toughest slate of games this season. With brutal honesty and sharp analysis, they break down how New Orleans cleverly embraced their challenging circumstances by while signaling their determination to control their own destiny.

The conversation centers on the murderer's row of opponents the Pelicans face in their first ten games, including matchups against Memphis, Wembanyama's Spurs, the champion Celtics, Denver, the Clippers, and OKC.

Only two nationally televised games all season reflects how the NBA views the Pelicans' relevance, but this could serve as powerful motivation for a roster featuring Zion Williamson, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, and newcomers Jordan Poole and Sadiq Bey. The brothers highlight key schedule stretches, including emotional homecomings when Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum return to New Orleans in March.

The discussion underscores a critical message for the Pelicans' success: start strong and establish position early rather than relying on late-season heroics. With 15 back-to-backs and constant questions about Zion's availability, this team's playoff hopes hinge on consistent health and performance from the opening tip.

Chris Paul had another fantastic 4th quarter in Game 3, scoring 19 points in the final stanza to put the Pels away, but the Pelicans had an answer for him in Game 4 in the form of Herb Jones and Jose Alvarado. The Pelicans made a statement that they would not be a pushover with their Game 2 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Before we get to THAT GAME, we want to thank everyone who watches and listens to Pels Pod. We started the podcast around a year ago and we've had a blast a long the way. There's been ups and downs with the Pels, as usual, but it's been a great ride since we've been able to begin cultivating this community with you all.

That being said, last night the Pels came back from a 23-point deficit to defeat LeBron James and the Lakers at the Smoothie King Center and strengthen their grip on the 9th seed. We got Pelicans color commentator Antonio Daniels and @ImpatientBull himself, Chris Conner, here to talk about it.

Let's Go. Pels Pod.

View Details

In a season full of peaks and valleys, the Pels are hitting another peak at the perfect time of the season. The Pels have won two of their last three games...on the road...without Brandon Ingram. Guys like Trey Murphy and Naji Marshall have stepped up without guys like Ingram and Devonte Graham due to injury and the Pels have risen to the 9th playoff spot. Raph & Garrick Rattler are back again to talk about the (playoff-bound?) Pels.

View Details

The Pels continue to do Pels things. Losers of two straight entering the All-Star break, the Pels came out of the break white hot, winning four straight games, three in blowout fashion. However, this would inevitably take a turn as Brandon Ingram would miss the last four games with a hamstring injury, only to be followed by C.J. McCollum entering the NBA's health and safety protocol and missing the last two games. The Pels did manage to break their losing streak without B.I. & C.J. against the Rockets last night.

Garrick & Raphael Rattler return to talk about the last week for the Pels as well as where they can hope to go from here.

View Details

The Pels came out of the All-Star Break red hot, winning four straight with three of those victories coming by more than 25 points. The streak came to an end last night with a 138-130 overtime loss against the Denver Nuggets and Nikola Jokic, but the Pels have been playing great basketball and are firmly back in the play-in race. Raph & Garrick Rattler return to break down your New Orleans Pelicans on this week's episode of Pels Pod.

View Details

The Pels entered the All-Star break with a record of 23-36, good for 3rd in the Southwest division and 12th in the Western Conference. While CJ McCollum has been lights out since coming to New Orleans via trade, the Pels have gone 1-4 with CJ in the lineup. The team has also yet to give an update on Zion Williamson's injury situation. Where do the Pels go from here? The Rattler Brothers are back to talk about the second half of the NBA season on this week's Pels Pod.

View Details

The Pelicans are winless since the arrival of CJ McCollum in New Orleans, but Saturday's 124-114 loss to the San Antonio Spurs showed exactly why the Pelicans traded for the former Portland Trailblazers sharpshooter.

McCollum scored 36 points on 15/24 shooting, as well as adding 11 rebounds to his box score. The Pels may have lost the game, but the vision is clear. Garrick and Raphael Rattler are back to discuss the past and future for your New Orleans Pelicans here on Pels Pod.

The week started off with a tough loss to the Darius Garland-less Cleveland Cavaliers but the Pels rattled off three straight wins over the Pistons, Nuggets, and Rockets. Garrick and Raphael Rattler are back to break down the week's Pelicans action here on Pels Pod.

The New Orleans Pelicans have only played one game since our last episode, but it was a costly 102-91 win over the New York Knicks because Brandon Ingram missed part of it with a sprained ankle and will also miss tonight's game against the Pacers.

It feels like whenever this team might be ready to make a run, something happens to stop it. Raph & Garrick Rattler are back talking about B.I.'s latest injury, whether the Pels can overcome it, and whether they can still have a shot at the Play-In tournament.

It's been more of the same for the New Orleans Pelicans. Since the last episode the Pelicans won two straight over the Timberwolves and Clippers respectively, before getting dominated by the Nets, who lost Kevin Durant early in the contest, and the Celtics, who overcame an 18-point first half deficit to come back and beat the Pels.

One step forward, one step back.

Garrick & Raphael Rattler return to break it all down on this week's episode of Pels Pod.

Just about a week after the Pels put together a 4 game losing streak, the Pels have now lost three of four after a 105-101 loss to the Toronto Raptors. Can the Pels become more consistent or is this just life for this team without their best player? Rapahel & Garrick Rattler break down the latest happenings with the New Orleans Pelicans on this week's Pels Pod.

View Details

As 2021 came to a close, the New Orleans Pelicans once again found themselves at something of a crossroads. Their best player is once again injured, their second best player has had an injury plagued season and some of the young players who had been expected to step up hadn't.

However things haven't been all bad. The team fought back from a dreadful start to at least pick themselves up off the mat and a few individual players, like Jonas Valanciunas, have had good seasons. Herb Jones has been one of the top rookies in the game thus far this season. Where do the Pels go from here? Garrick & Raphael Rattler talk about it all on the first episode of Pels Pod in 2022.

View Details

The New Orleans Pelicans had another solid week on the court, going 2-1 for the week with wins over Portland and Orlando before finishing up with a loss to Oklahoma City. While the 117-112 loss to the Thunder was disappointing, what made it worse was Brandon Ingram leaving the game after the first quarter with what the team termed as "achilles soreness."

So even after the Pels got on a little roll recently and made themselves interested, injuries once again seem to hit this team at the worst possible time in the worst possible ways. What should the Pelicans do without their best (available) player? Garrick and Raphael Rattler break it all down on this week's episode of Pels Pod.

Raphael & Garrick Rattler are back with another episode of Pels Pod. It's a quick turnaround from last Wednesday's episode but the Pels went streaking in the meantime, with back-to-back wins over the Thunder, via Devonte Graham miracle shot, and over the Bucks (without Giannis and Khris Middleton), via Devonte Graham 3-point barrage. After a 3-16 start, the Pelicans have won seven of their past 12 games and have shown steady improvement. However, it wasn't all good with the news that Zion Williamson's foot injury wasn't healing as quickly as had been hoped. The Rattler Brothers talk about it all on this week's episode of Pels Pod.
