Post Punk Mutant Musicians: Recent Episodes

Jason A Walter

Post Punk Mutant Musicians is a music podcast that features current post punk songs by a multitude of artists while also including unique episodes of voicemails, experimental performance pieces, and soundscapes. This honestly might be one of the most eclectic and original podcasts out there because in addition to having weird music, it also sometimes showcases episodes of traditional podcast conversations. You never know what you're going to get with Post Punk Mutant Musicians. There are multiple episodes a week, with some weeks having a new episode of original content every day of the week. I watched the movie The 400 Blows for the second time since college, and wrote an ekphrasis about the film. This is a song called “The 400 blows” that uses the poem for lyrics. The music all started from an acoustic track called “Situationist Vibe” because I’ve been reading about Situationist history after watching Nope! and Russian Doll because they’re all about commodity fetishism and The Spectacle. 400 blows and the Situationists both had a big influence on punk, and I’m really stoked with how much of a punk rock vibe this song has. It’s a wall of sound for sure.

This new single of mine was largely inspired by the dance party at the Dime Museum this past 4/20. I’ve always wanted my sets to be big hoe-downs, and last week’s AJ THC set was definitely a big ol’ dance party. My next show is a week from today with Dandi and forceghost at Soul Bar. Show starts at 8pm. After that, it’s Von’s house in North Augusta on Saturday May 14th for another epic house show. Sign up for the Augusta House Show Confederation today!

This week has been my Spring Break, and my only goal was to make a new EP of between three and five songs, and I got to three today. This song is my fourth cover from the ‘80s. I sped up this Meat Puppets song, and it cut a quarter off the song. I think this is one of the danciest minute-and-a half recordings I’ve ever made. 4/16 @ Kyle and Leslie’s. 4/20 @ the Dime.

I wrote a poem last night and used the lyrics today for a new single! This song is a series of dramatic monologues about the five generations of Greek men who were connected to the city-state Thebes. In the modernist tradition of writing poetry, this song focuses on the body through the use of allusion to American pop culture and Greek mythology, onomatopoeia, constant verbs, and collage. This track features twelve instruments and some of the best lyrics I’ve ever written. My next show is 4/16 at Kyle’s house. House Show Federation, wut wut?! BYOC. I’m also working on a 4/20 show at the Dime with Nomad and another act. It’ll be the for real debut of PPMM 9. Holla holla

I’ve been thinking a lot about ‘80s indie rock lately and how og cassette culture gave people great access to home recording and d.i.y. record distribution. ‘80s technology was a paradigm shift that’s culminated in our current era of media overload. Shows like Stranger Things and Wonder Woman 1984 have reinvigorated nostalgia for the “Me Decade,” and I wanted to make a song that’s also about the mall, beat em’ up arcade games, thrifting, and NES but that addresses loneliness and poverty in the same breath. My next gigs are at the Dime Museum on 3/26 with a TON of amazing Southeastern bands and on 4/16 at Kyle’s house for Not Philip Fest.

3 new songs with my new Moog on them! “orb And tussle” was inspired by the Sebadoh song “Boquet for a Siren” off their album “Bubble and Scrape.” The lyrics for “Soul Island” all came from a poem by Jayson Rubio with permission by the author.

Track listing: 1) All the little balls turning into ghost 2) K Monks 3) All decks on hand 4) Everyone you love who died 5) It could be little fish 6) Bonus Track - Chthulu chilling The conceit behind the EP is that certain rules apply: I can only use garage band on my iphone At least 1 element must be captured sound, for example track five is literally a recording of a man I overheard walking along the streets of my home town It's noise dance, so there must be some kind of repetition, particularly a beat I was originally inspired by someone on instagram called Mr Zinester (account is no longer active, but they are active as All Decks On Hand - hence track 3)

I've also been encouraged by two creators that don't make music to pick it up because of their interest in noise and experimental music - you can look them both up on twitter as grthink and tomeenmurphy.

Then, listening to this podcast placed the final block in place, particularly the acapella rock albums and the family rememberance, so I owe PPMM a big thanks.

I'm always fascinated by music, but cannot play an instrument or sing at all. What I liked about doing something on garage band was that it is easy to make something convincingly musical without the need of any instrumental skill. I particularly like just gathering sounds and layering them until they sound like a wall of noise or are sinister and dark and then putting on a dance beat and cutting them down to size.

pbs mystery/ vitamin ace/ [Acid Jock the Human Catalyst] + Nieltown/ Nieltown 4 way split!!!!

This is one of the very best splits I've ever been a part of and have put together. When I was in college, John Nielson turned me on to krautrock, The Elephant Six, the first wave of post-punk, and noise rock. He's one of my best friends I've ever had, and this is the first time we've been on a split together. Cary Brown (vitamin ace) is one of my main squeezes these days in the Pizza Hell ranks. Edwin Hughes (pbs mystery) is one of my favorite experimental artists right now.

Track listing:

  1. "pyrir lyman" by pbs mystery
  2. "blue cap planet of the flakes" by vitamin ace *lyrics by [AJ THC]
  3. "1901" by [Acid Jock the Human Catalyst] + Nieltown (recorded by Town as well)
  4. "cdm" by [Acid Jock the Human Catalyst] *lyrics by Joseph Johnson
  5. "The Ending" by [Acid Jock the Human Catalyst] + Nieltown (recorded by Town as well)
  6. "EyesFacingDown" by Nieltown
  7. "FallsOut" by Nieltown
  8. "A Painting" by Nieltown

The opening track by pbs mystery has elements of Animal Collective and "Person Pitch" era Panda Bear but in a somewhat surf rock, highly Hawaiian soundtrack-style. It's the kind of opening track that you dream of when putting a record together. I especially love how the song descends into total noise at the very end. It's a great segue way into "blue cap planet of the flakes" by vitamin ace. Cary's track is not even two minutes long, but he manages to pack a wallop. Converting a poem I wrote into lyrics, Cary's new single is a barn burner. It's my Fall jam.

"1901" is two songs that I first wrote in Noise Money, recorded with Nieltown, and later played in M-Tank, ultimately ending with a solo album release as well. I really like to record song multiple times. "1901 Cedarwood" was the address where Noise Money lived in Clemson, SC. The second part of the song came from a jam that Noise Money did during our tape "Snowed In." Joseph Johnson wrote the lyrics of "cdm" in response to a comic I posted that alludes to "Killer" by Alice Cooper, thus making it an extremely meta song. We're working on an album of thirty-one songs like this, so that's something. "The Ending" was a song like "1901" that moved from Noise Money to M-Tank to my solo albums, as the years went by. Nieltown produced and plays on this song because we were playing this around the time he and I were in a band together named Puffin. Hopefully, Nieltown dropboxes me those Puffin tracks again so I can also play them on the podcast.

Nieltown's three songs are pop awesomeness. Take all of the best indie bands from the mid-90s, like Pavement, Built to Spill, and Elephant Six bands, and you've got indie pop on steroids. That's how I feel about John Nielson. He's always been the epitome of cool. I love this dude, and I hope y'all love on his new tunesss too.

Charleston-based band Dumb Doctors, ex-members of (Quad, Boring Portals, M-Tank, Go For Launch/Sans Jose, Explorer's Club), make the very best post punk. Imagine if Uranium Club was a Southern sped-up Gang of Four. If that weren't great enough, the track's closer "REPTILE (COLDVVAVE)" is a six-plus-minute-long surf goth tune about the untamed, id-centric archetypes in our unconscious mind. And it was recorded entirely by punk rock god Scott Dence. This is honestly one of my absolute favorite and most amazing albums I've ever featured on this podcast, and I hope y'all check the EP out, spread the word about the band, and buy their music because it's awesome and transcendent.

This is the B-side of the Noise Money tape “Snowed In” that me and my college roommates recorded on a boombox during a rare snow day while we were all going to Clemson.

One of my favorite moments in this is when Reburn sings, “I have no telephone...because my roommate can’t write a letter.” In 2003, I didn’t pay our phone bill because I mailed the check to myself. I mixed up the return address with the mailing address. None of us had cell phones then, so without a landline, we were completely phone-less.

I really appreciate those who checked out the A-side that I posted yesterday, and I hope this B-side gets some definite love from y’all as well. It really feels good to have this tape out in the ether.

Growing up in the '90s, I was exposed to Noise Rock through bands like Sonic Youth. When I went to Clemson University in the 2000s, I became obsessed with the Velvet Underground album "White Light/White Heat." The idea of being in a noise band was extremely alluring because the genre felt like largely unexplored territory. I was fortunate that by my junior year, I had two crazy roommates who were intrigued by the idea as well, so we started playing as Noise Money. We'd switch instruments, switch vocalists, jam with wild abandon, and record our sessions on a boombox. One of our tapes "Genesis" got magnetized because I think Reburn set it on top of an amp or something, and the equipment magnetized the cassette. "Snowed In," to my knowledge, is the only surviving Noise Money tape that features myself, Skyelynn, and Reburn. The tape's title "Snowed In" is literal because we experienced a rare Snow Day in the South and took advantage of our not having to go to class by eating "yummy Spaghetti-o's" and homemade pizzas, jamming out and recording, taking pictures outside, and partying our little college faces off. This would have been around 2003. I used some of the photos we took in the snow as the album art for "Snowed In."

There are a lot of really amazing things going on in "Snowed In." I'd definitely say that our jammy blend of screamy hardcore, funky post-punk, and discordant noise rock can be pretty comical at times. For example, Reburn repeating, "I must be a madman!" is like the infectious mantra of a comic book villain threatening to take over the world. I'll be posting the B-side of this tape tomorrow, but for now, enjoy the first half of "Snowed In" by Noise Money.

I am insanely honored to have collaborated with Adams Mitchell, Lydia Ethyl Williams Mitchell, and Greg Islands on this album! All four of us sing on it. It’s seven songs and a grand total of 14 minutes long. I recorded drums for this before the quarantine started, and then Adams and Greg passed the recordings back and forth in order to master them and to add all of the other instruments. Greg’s wife Ellen made the awesome album art. I can’t think of a punk rock record that has this many different lead singers on it, especially in such a short time span record-wise. I really hope y’all give this a whirl. Tapes are available of it via Academia Tapes’ Bandcamp page https://academia.bandcamp.com/album/magenta The album’s streaming there as well. Double down

To celebrate Cary’s birthday, the members of Gloom Cocoon decided to put together a noize comp. Noize Bros is a 4-way split: Elroktapus>vitamin ace>[AJ THC]>Radams. Album art by Cary Brown. Each of us wrote our own descriptions too:

[AJ THC] says, “This comp is a voluptuous array of voices, soundscapes, confrontations, and elations within a simulation of Art itself. Allow this experience to wash over you instead of trying to forge a clear concrete perception.”

Radams says, “Them four noize bros from Gloom Cocoon decided they were tired of the silence and decided to fill your ear holes with their disastrous sounds. You will dance, you will laugh, you will cry, but foremost, those that love the weird, you will feel at home.”

vitamin ace says, “Pink, brown, or white; Noize is all over this world!! It may nurture you or it could ambush you like a bad cover band on a seedy night of bar-hopping (member when?). Like the static on your radio you stumble through in between butt rock stations, tune into "Noize Bros" and let your brain turn to digital suds.”

Elroktapus says:

Noize Bros throw bows Satan knows psycho foes Flowers grow in lava flows Bleeps and modes Blood and nodes

Chak Tulix is one of my favorite Harsh Noise artists. Clark DeLoach builds his own equiptment, which makes for really intense, interesting, and original sounds. This set is from when he performed at the Epicenter for Pizza Hell's Noise Day 13 album release party for the 2018 Noise Day comp. Austin Arthur was kind enough to send me the video of Clark's performance, which I converted to audio for the podcast. I've definitely been on a major noize kick lately, and listening to this set has scratched that itch for me

It's Cary Brown's birthday, so today on the podcast, I'm posting a noise set that he did on Instagram live on a Sunday night. I love Cary Brown to death, and I've listened to this <> set a few times already because I've been on a major noize kick lately. I know Cary would really love it if people listened to his tunes because music means a great deal to him, and being heard is definitely a way to show you care, so if you want to give Cary a birthday present, then listen to this set and tell him specifically what you thought about it. For me, Cary is one of a handful of musicians I know who records and performs noize and Harsh Noise tunes, and it's really inspired me to evolve from punk rock into experimental territory. There's definitely something both meditative and confrontational about Cary's music, which makes it both a beautiful sedative AND punk af. Anyways, Happy Birthday, Cary! You're my BFF

Bobby runs the DIY label AVANT GORE PRODUCTIONS. He also makes noise/dark ambience with the project MANNEQUIN CELLAR. He makes all his tracks with 4 & 8 track cassette recorders, and the only time he uses computers is when he has to upload tracks online or email them. He uses a lot of dialogue samples and sound sources from a Spanish horror flick called “The Possessed” in the single “THE POSSESSION OF SUSAN BARNES.”

I’ve done a Harsh Noise record, comps of voicemails, and some punk deconstruction, but this is my first Noise Pop solo album. I’ve noticed that Harsh Noise has established conventions of being instrumental soundscapes that tend to be at least five minutes in length, so Harsh Noise definitely shares a kinship with ‘60s Psychedelic rock, the noisy side of Krautrock, and even some jambands. However, I would say that Noise Pop is more akin to the first wave of post punk, No Wave, Noise Rock, and K Records bands by containing noise within a pop formula, which makes Noise somewhat palatable. I greatly appreciate Harsh Noise artists’ tendency to go long because listening for to anything for several minutes, let alone dissonant tones, stretches one’s pallet and tolerance level when it comes to music. However, I’ve been excited to hear some new approaches emerging in Noise with there being a “Pink Flag” and “Nervous Breakdown EP” approach to getting in and out before the jig is up. For a long time, I’ve envied the abstract, conceptual, and pop artists from the ‘30s to the ‘60s because they implemented new ideas of artmaking into each of their concentrations. I’d like to do the same with my solo albums by having each be a litter of new concepts in its approach to Noise. By singing along to AM static, using samples from Honduran cassettes, by recording my phone while the phone itself is going through the rinse cycle, by including voicemails, and by recording on an old tape deck, ❤ Plus Sized Models ❤ by [AJ THC] attempts to fuse together performance art, Modernist poetry, conceptual art, and Harsh Noise. Just like how American Abstract Expressionism evolved into video installations and performance pieces by the ‘80s, I hope that noise artists usher in new approaches to music by pushing one another to try something different each time they record. I’ve been insanely inspired by all of the Noise artists I’ve heard on Pizza Hell Tapes, and if I’ve tagged you in this post, then it’s because you’re one of those artists. I hope somebody makes a noise album in response to or in rejection of ❤ PSM ❤ and that the inspiration, or lack thereof, keeps infectiously going strong. I hope you listen to all six minutes of my new solo record and that you either love it so much that you start doing Noise Pop yourself or that you hate it so much that you do what you feel is a better version of Noise, whether that be long Harsh Noise instrumentals or something no one even knows about yet. In conclusion, ❤ Plus Sized Models ❤ is Noise Pop and new voicemails from [Acid Jock the Human Catalyst], or it’s boderline bullshit recorded on Jason’s IPhone in September 2020.

Gus of Chicken Shack Studios recorded these acoustic demoes to get gigs in Chicago when he first moved there from Augusta a few years ago. These samples from the album “Augustus Waller” include amazing renditions of “Atlantic City,” “Country Roads,” and “Tuesday’s Gone.” “El Borracho” is a personal favorite of mine, and it is an original. Music by Blake Godbee released on May 5th, 2018. I'm a big fan of Blake Godbee's music. I've seen him perform with Saturnal Hex and Ghost Cup live, but I was most impressed by his solo noise set at a Noise Day 13 show that Pizza Hell hosted a few years ago at The Epicenter because I've never seen someone blend Harsh Noise with melodic samples like those on the albums "Person Pitch" by Panda Bear and "Merriweather Post Pavillion" by Animal Collective.

Blake's project and album "summermemorycenter" is a mix of instrumental dance pop and indie electronica. There's a definite krautrock vibe with these tracks, and the closest thing I can compare them to would be the album "Zuckerzeit" by Cluster, which is probably my favorite instrumental album of all time. Blake is absolutely one of my favorite musicians and producers right now, and I hope y'all take the time to check out his amazing tunes:

THE HECKONING... was mostly recorded in the wee hours of September 14th, 2020 (Happy Birthday Emmy Lou).

Most of these things were written by the Quaint, except for the following:

"Dreams" written by Stevie Nicks

"Do You Wanna Dance" written by some guy

The cover songs and "Nanny's House" were recorded last year, and are outtakes from the previous album. Now they use up space on this album.

"Terrible Moon" was heard in a dream, and written immediately after waking up

"Smash..." was recorded in June 2020 credits released September 14, 2020

GARBAGE.

Weird Rap and sketches by [AJ THC], Johnny, H3ro, and Country Living Jurz Atlas after the world premiere of Party Hard at the Big Mo on 9/22. Two days ago on my new music podcast, I posted Boo Hag's full set from the world premiere of the movie Party Hard at the Big Mo, the drive-in theater in Monetta, GA. That episode received the greatest number of listens out of all of the 160 episodes I've released thus far, starting from when the quarantine first began.

Yesterday, I posted H3ro and Cypher T's full set; they played after Boo Hag and before the Party Hard premiere. Immediately after H3ro's awesome set, Columbia rapper JOHNNYKillZA spit a freestyle verse on a track that I beatboxed on. He named the track "Off the top." Then, H3ro and I beatboxed on a track that JOHNNYKillZA and I freestyled on that I named "A Review of H3ro," which is what it sounds like, a glowing commentary on the set H3ro had finished just minutes before my review in rap form. After that song, I recorded some random sounds from people's reactions to Party Hard, once the credits started rollin' - car horns and crowd sounds: "Post-Party Hard" and "Post-Party Hard II." On my way home, I stopped at a gas station in Williston, GA. I tried to get two young men to rap on a track, but they were more interested in me buying them a cigar, so "Hey, Mister!" is a reality skit instead of a song. Luckily, this album "Post-Party Hard" found its second hero, Country Livin' Jurz Atlas. He and I beatboxed and spit rhymes on "Country Livin'," "Atlas," "get yr $" Atlas also spoke "Real Talk" for over sixteen minutes. The album closes with the sounds of "Checkers' Drive Thru."

The movie Party Hard features a lot of hip hop and live performances, and after the movie, I was definitely inspired to make impromptu hip hop songs with people I met that night and H3ro, one of the stars from the movie.

The music genres Noise and Weird Rap, in my opinion, both have a lot of space of uncharted territory, so in terms of Noise, I really like recording and releasing found sounds that are straight out of reality. Likewise, with Weird Rap, I like presenting hip hop in its original, unfiltered form - the cypher. There's definitely something to be said for freestylin' and beatboxing because as technology keeps evolving at an insanely rapid pace, it's kinda nice to hear music made just by vocal chords. The same can be said of Noise, as well, because as Noise artists tend to crystalize a convention of Noise music being pedal-heavy and gear-centric, using one's phone to record random noises creates an interesting foil to the pedal-centricism that is becoming a tradition in Noise as time goes on. Furthermore, I think that in addition to Harsh Noise and Weird Rap as genres, I'd love to see Odd Capella (weird a cappella) as a genre that is influenced by and is a reaction to Noise and Weird Rap. Harsh Noise, Weird Rap, and Odd Capella are the three parts of the Holy Trinity, the Triforce, the equilateral triangle. Stick a fork in me..

H3ro w/special guest Cypher T live @ The Big Mo (Drive-in Theater) in Monetta, Georgia on 9/22/2020 for the world premiere of the movie Party Hard. Yesterday on the post punk podcast, I posted Boo Hag's full set from the Party Hard premiere last Wednesday at the Big Mo drive in theater. After Boo Hag played, H3ro did a hip hop set, and for the last song, Cypher T joined him. They ended with the song "Party Hard" which is featured in the movie. Cypher T and H3ro are both actors and performers in the film as well, so it was pretty surreal to see them perform live and, then, to see them performing live on the big screen. It was some real life metafiction.

This is one of the best hip hop sets I've ever heard. I don't know if Augusta hip hop artists Omar Gorganus Robinson, Milo Kobayashi, or Julian Velasquez-Joestar have performed with H3ro or collaborated with him, but I think it'd be awesome to see collabos between the Augusta and Columbia hip hop scenes. Without further ado, here's H3ro and Cypher's full set from the Big Mo last Wednesday before Party Hard

Burnt Trail ft. Ashtronomik (prod. Hypnokid) EP: Forest Gods Released: 30 August Label: Independent

Texture and Ashtronomik draw on elemental forces and ancient mysteries to tell a story of rage, recovery and revelation in the video for their new single BURNT TRAIL, produced by versatile beatsmith Hypnokid.

Both emcees have a deep connection to Scotland’s diverse, deeply underground hip-hop history, with Iranian-born Ashtronomik serving as beatmaker, producer and creative visionary for projects by some of its finest artists. This year has seen him drop a killer posse cut with Paque, Loki, McRoy, Mackenzie, Empress and Kid Robotik - the anthemic ABRUPTLY.

Edinburgh’s versatile wordsmith Texture is a staple of esoteric labels/collectives Black Lantern and This Is Not Pop, usually found grafting on cold, futuristic electronica with Asthmatic Astronaut. His latest EP FOREST GODS sees him explore more earthy, organic sounds and themes.

On BURNT TRAIL, Hypnokid leads Ashtronomik and Texture along forest paths deep into shaded woods, among the old gods, with a beat that bridges the sonic gap between dusty crates of boom bap and intricate trap rhythms.

The video, shot by Mackenzie and cut by Ashtronomik and his team, was filmed at an abandoned castle in a secret location in Scotland, with eye-popping visuals and a raw, hallucinatory, psychedelic edge.

Featuring two rappers at the peak of their skills, this is hip-hop that enters into a deep connection with Scotland’s mystic, pagan past and its uncertain future. Texture and Ashtronomik prove to be a volatile lyrical mixture, burning every bridge they cross.

Chuck Key showcases elements of the dancy dj samplage of artists like Chemical Brothers and Avalanches while also verging into movie soundtrack territory. Some tracks divulge into minimalism and noise. Every track on this extremely eclectic EP is a complete surprise. My favorite track might be the deconstruction of “My Ding-a-ling” by Chuck Berry. “Pure White Lining” was originally released on January 26, 2013 by the artist via mail order.

One night, AJ THC, native america, Shaggy, and Mr. Bad Eye decided to be a jamband. It was at Pizza Hell and recorded by PH. I think Snitch Karma might be on one of these tracks? When Adams and I released the comic book Post Punk Apocalyptic Mutant Musicians, these tracks came with it as a cd. They were also used as some of the background music for the first three or so episodes of PPMM.

Legion of Calamity's release Earl is the first official Pizza Hell release from the Bandcamp page (pizzahellstudios.bandcamp.com) that was recorded at Greenlight Studio. Lee Landers, Jennifer Sparling, Cary Brown, and Adams were all a part of this creation (if memory serves me right). The album was named after the first hurricane of the season in 2016.

With the most recent hurricane, a lot of people are out of a home, or are suffering because of the destruction a storm like this is capable of. While America has seen it's first real disaster from Hurricanes only recently, more will come, either this year or the next. Take a moment if you can to donate to the Red Cross, who are usually the first on the scene to provide help to these victims. https://www.redcross.org/donate/hurricane-laura-donations.html/

From the mouth of Zach Williams himself: The first clutch of songs you hear in this program are from an album I made and released in 2018 called Gaki. The title of the record is also the pen name of Ryunosuke Akutogawa, author of "In a Bamboo Grove" and Rashomon." He used Gaki to sign his haiku, and the term is generally translated as "hungry ghost." In folklore, the hungry ghost survives on dregs, whatever we leave behind, whether its garbage, spiritual energy, or literal waste. The songs on this record took nearly a decade to take enough shape as something close to an album, so the process felt like an unburdening of a bunch of ideas and feelings I'd been working with since around 2009. The skeletons of some of them began forming in other bands but never got finished. I take forever to finish anything. Still, I'm proud of much of the stuff on here, "Kneeless" especially, considering it arose spontaneously out of the process of finishing everything else.

"Lavender Anorak" is the last thing I finished, back in November of last year, part of a new project called Purple. It contains a monologue by Peter Ivers, host of New Wave Theater, a show that showcased post-punk acts in the eighties. Ivers was a musician himself, releasing several albums before his murder in 1983. You should listen to his song, "You Used to Be Stevie Wonder." The monologue sampled in "Lavender Anorak" sums up what we're probably all feeling pretty well. Optimism is heroic in times like this; we should try to keep the faith despite the skeletons at our banquet. In his words: "If we all weren't living under the threat of famine bomb fever, it'd make no difference if people ever found out who they were or what they're doing on this planet. But because of this threat, it's become necessary to alert anyone and everyone that could possibly care."

Here's an assortment of my favorite Jason Walter experiences here at Pizza Hell, and even before Pizza Hell!

Starting out with a quick trip to the best unscripted adventure for Gloom's TGTAI, "Corn Cob Pipe", and then into a lot of tracks you've never heard before! There's a rough cut of GC's "Fossil Eyes", an unreleased J-Walt "I Hate this Riff", 1-800-Magenta's "Flares", and Acid J's "Roc Doc 9". After which there's an assortment of Gloom Cocoon tracks, and then we delve into Jason's time with Von Holmes' Uno Mic studio with five of my favorite tracks: "Love-Hate", "Scrooge McFuck", "Artist Arme", "Noise Money", and "Holes". All ending with another scrumptious GC track, our cover of Lola.

And yeah most of these have already been published on this Podcast, but you probably already forgot about em! So dive in and enjoy the vocal and musical flex of Jason on his birthday!!!!

Starts and ends with recordings of Corinne Madeen's Moon Song and From A Star, demo of a Negative Ease tune, two Mongolord songs recorded by Philip Baldy, Serpent Singers by Wet Spot (Jason Walter, Celia Gary, Adams Mitchell), Strophe-Antistrophe with Cary Brown on keys, then a whole slew of acoustic covers by Adams featuring two early Gloom Cocoon tracks before they were fully Gloomified!

Wasted @$$ Wasteland, The Addicted States of America, and Helens by Jason Walter. “Wasted @$$ Wasteland” is a poem that takes inspiration from the poem “The Wasteland” by T. S. Eliot and the NES games Super Mario Bros 3 in addition to referencing a great deal of garage punk bands and cartoon characters. “The Addicted States of America” is influenced by the highly political prose poem “America” by the California Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. “Helens” draws from “Helen” by Hilda Dolittle.

Surf Pointe Glasses is Metal Thumb, Mr. Bad Eye, Vitamin Ace, Dave Sauerkrautrock, Rah Butter, and Acid Jock the Human Catalyst. This session is from a really fun night at Sample Augusta headquarters/Rad Manor. Amanda Hart gave Cary Brown cupcakes to share with me, Adams Mitchell, Rachel Godman, Daniel Chavez, and David Matos. We played the game “Categories” in elimination mode to figure out who got which cupcake. Danny won the “Composers” category, but split his cupcake with Dave. Then, we made a song about the cupcake party called “Surf Point Glasses.” After that, we sang songs that inquiry about Satan’s whereabouts and butchered Pearl Jam covers. Things got ethereal when Rachel got on the mic for “The Doors: Part 2.” We closed it all off with me and Danny rapping about Dr. Dolittle and wheat beers.

“Let’s Hang” by L.A. band Hallow Gallows moves beyond early Devo and Frank Zappa into uncharted rock ‘n’ roll territory of pop perfection. Colin Ryan, former member of The Shine Brothers and Woven Bones, is a masterful songwriter. “Let’s Hang” is one of my absolute favorite new records that’s come out this year, and I can’t say enough enthusiastic things about it because it’s unprecedented in it’s awesomeness. It’s truly a high honor to be able to feature these incendiary tracks on my humble music podcast.

10 brand spankin’ new Native America tracks! Our boy Cary Brown (Gloom Cocoon, This Machine Thrills) has his own home recording studio now, and he’s been recording up a storm! The first five tracks are classic surf rock tracks that are akin to The Ventures, Link Wray, and Dick Del and the Deltones. I haven’t heard such vintage sounding surf rock come out of the Southeast since I saw The Crypt Tides, from Athens, play at Soul Bar six years ago! The other half of the album is a mix of noize, metal, samples, and jams. Matt from Corvid Canine and Sepia Raven collaborated with Cary on the song leona baritona quarantina!!! “Needlebeetle” was on the last Noise Day 13 comp. I’m a big fan of what Cary does, and I’m honored to have his first solo LP on the podcast!

w.i.n.g.it = two lovely punks in Augusta, GA who are making pure, badass rock and roll tunes. Their three demo songs are also available on their YouTube page: https://youtu.be/K8tk2wZbSyM. The singles “TMNL” and “Poet in the Everglades” by No Funnies were recorded by Von Holmes at Battle Shack Studios. Von plays lead guitar on the tracks as well. The single “Export A Blues” by Babyland! She’s a founding member of an all-girl, snotty bubblegum band called “The Klackers” > https://klackers.bandcamp.com/. Babyland is the section of a cemetery devoted to unborn fetuses. Lots of her solo stuff is heavily influenced by Colleen Green and Peach Kelli Pop. She records all her own stuff and plays guitar.

Listening to Houston Hands’ music has been one of my favorite things about asking anyone to send me their music and to leave me voicemails for the podcast. Listening to their tunes, I’ve laughed alongside them and I’ve gotten emotional because their heartfelt and sincere songs make me love the beauty of life. Here’s their description of their music: “The name is Milk Theif My actual name is houston. We are from southern Missouri and don’t play live shows or record albums. Art is like a river. Constantly falling through the fingers of society. If you ask the audience of any art, whether it be a song or a painting or a film or a dance, ask them a question with your art. Ask them a vague puzzle that is so aloof they aren’t even sure it’s a question let alone what the question is and forget about the answer. That unanswerable unsolvable opened case in a humans brain creates a tiny fun anxiety. That’s called interest. That’s why we listen to a song over and over or stand in front of a painting for an hour. Trying to figure it out. That’s Milk Theif.” Well guess what, Houston - ya’ got an album out now! And it’s called “Milk Thief”

This is the album "Culture of Death" plus the "Extra Sinnings" single from AD86. The single is not on Academia Tapes’ Bandcamp. It was recorded in 2006-2008 in Rhode Island and in Massachusetts. Tyler wrote the music and plays guitar and bass. Scott plays guitar on a couple of songs. Greg Islands is on drums and bass. Tyler is one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

Thursdays are for live shows on the podcast! Gloom Cocoon played with Hunger Anthem on Soul Bar 7/26/18 and played tunes off their four LPS. For their one-and-done cover, they covered “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia. For the encore, Jayson Rubio got on drums for an intense version of “TMNL.”

Greg Islands of Academia Tapes plays rockin’ tunes off his label for the new episode of my post punk podcast! If you’re never heard his stuff, it’s reminiscent of Guided by Voices, Sonic Youth, and Sebadoh. Google “Academia Tapes Plus” to go to Greg’s website and hear more awesome songs.

Greg’s from New England and resides in Charleston, SC. Here’s Greg’s description of the playlist:

“This a mix of all stuff I recorded when I was living in Rhode Island.

There's eight various "rare" solo songs (none of em are on bandcamp!) plus one ten-minute instrumental collage song by my band AD86. I p this collage a few years after we recorded it.”

So far, I’ve enlisted Pizza Hell, Academia Plus, and Chicken Shack to dj the podcast. If you’re a tape label and wanna dj, lemme know. Also, please leave me voicemails and text me your tunes. I haven’t heard from anybody today and am bummed about it, but luckily I’ve been stoked on the Greg Islands playlist this morning.
