The Legalization of Equity Crowd Funding was the catalyst for the great Economic Democratization of the Capital Markets. Although crowdfunding started with reward based, the advent of the JOBS Act in 2012 introduced 4 ways to raise equity capital from the crowd. The expanded pool of additional investors are not your typical angel investors. These 4 methods remove the invisible wall between entrepreneurs and their potential investors. History shows time and time again how naive, well intentioned white people, in the spirit of compromise, released authority and control to other white people that had a sole intent to harm and hinder black people from achieving equality - socially and economically.
There are many examples of progress being made and initiatives seeking to grow black entrepreneurship, wealth creation, and reinvestment into the communities that have been neglected and abandoned. As we look forward with these new sources of funding and entrepreneur development, we must also look back to see how to fix the fissure that over a 100 years of systemic racism has caused in our communities. If you are opposed to giving hand outs, then give a hand up. Work to get the loopholes that enable racists to harm and prevent the success and empowerment of people of color out of our financial, judicial, and legislative systems.

Self Directed Retirement Accounts (IRA and ROTH) have long been a means to put retirement funds to work creating greater yield by investing in alternative investments -- LLP for Oil & Gas, Minerals, Real Estate---AND private ventures. Time is precious. No matter how much money you make, you can't buy more time. Once it passes, it is no longer a resource to be tapped to enjoy leisure, get work done, or spend with loved ones. Everything revolves around the concept of time. Why is a workweek 40 hours and normal work days are Mon-Fri and so many 'working for the weekend'? Side-hustle aside, why do we have laud entrepreneurs' "hustle culture" mentality in which working 70 - 80 hours to get the job done on your business is considered a strength not a weakness?

In this Compassionate Capitalist Podcast, Karen Rands is joined by Jonathon Bragdon, Founder of Capacity, to discuss Revenue Based Investments as a non-dilutive capital source gaining in popularity with entrepreneur founders and investors. Revenue Based Investments, also known as Royalty Financing, is a hybrid of debt and equity in that it can be converted to equity, unlike cash flow lending, yet is paid back as a percentage of revenue on a predictive basis until an agreed to multiple of the original amount is returned to the investor. When the agreed to amount, usually 2x - 4x the investment, is paid back to the investor, the entrepreneur's obligation is fulfilled and the company retains any equity used as collateral on the financing. The unique characteristics of Revenue Based Investments is well suited for businesses seeking growth capital to expand and have a long term vision for the future of their company to remain private. Investors accustomed to re-occuring revenue streams from their investments, can choose this type of investment in entrepreneur endeavors without the risk of waiting for the company to be acquired or go public in order to get their return on investment.

The wealth gap between white and black communities because of systemic racism and the resulting obstacle for building equity and wealth is astounding This is part 2 of Karen Rands' series on Black Economic Empowerment and Prosperity. This episode addresses the 10X prosperity gap, as reported by the Brookings Institute (AVG Black Household net worth is just $17,150 in 2016, while the average white household is $171,000) and suggests causes for that vast divide that compounded over time and builds upon the research and insights provided in Episode 1. Here, Karen discusses the cycles of prosperity for Blacks in a segregated America, often followed by violence and out right biased legislative and financial practices intended to help enrich White while prohibiting Blacks from participating in those same economic and educational opportunities. Karen touches on the challenges with public education, higher education, societal beliefs that infect the black identity in America and the historic lack of capital. which even manifested itself in the disbursement of COVID19 CARE funds for small businesses. Karen offers insight into new opportunities in education, entrepreneurism, access to capital for Black Americans. True equality comes with economic prosperity.
The Compassionate Capitalist Podcast will explore the history of black enterprise, and government policies intended to aid in economic prosperity, and the racist practices that created barriers and obstacles to African American prosperity so that wealth and education gap which exists today has its roots dating back to the late 1800. History shows time and time again how naive, well intentioned white people, in the spirit of compromise, released authority and control to other white people that had a sole intent to harm and hinder black people from achieving equality - socially and economically.
There are many examples of progress being made and initiatives seeking to grow black entrepreneurship, wealth creation, and reinvestment into the communities that have been neglected and abandoned. As we look forward with these new sources of funding and entrepreneur development, we must also look back to see how to fix the fissure that over a 100 years of systemic racism has caused in our communities. If you are opposed to giving hand outs, then give a hand up. Work to get the loopholes that enable racists to harm and prevent the success and empowerment of people of color out of our financial, judicial, and legislative systems.

Karen Rands wraps season 12 of the Compassionate Capitalist Podcast Radio with a fresh take on goal setting. New Year's resolutions are notoriously set and usually broken in the first 30 days. When it comes to business, goals are rarely achieved when you are flying by the seat of your pants with no road map to achieve those goals. For entrepreneurs, often times business goals are co-dependent on personal goals. It can be very challenging to achieve one without sacraficing the other.
Karen will dig a little deeper on aligning your personal and business goals, because when it comes to setting goals, that is easy. Writing a goal down on a piece of paper is the first step but it won't be achieved by magic. Setting goals is easy, achieving goals is hard. You must have clear intent and purpose, which requires assessment of what works and what isn't working for you and your business. Achieving your goals requires a strategy. However, strategy requires a plan. A plan requires all of the above to know what is needed, how to get it, and what to do when you get it. There is a fallacy that permeates the industry. Direct Public Offering or DPO was a legal way for entrepreneurs to directly solicit investment from the public withough filing with the SEC to become a public entitity. It was rarely used. As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote; and recognize it has been 47 years for women to have equal right to education and 30 years since women were given the authority to obtain a loan without a male cosigner, it is interesting to observe the next wave of independence. As with most long term suppression; the outcome of decades of activism, perseverence, and determination is rarely sudden or suprising. Women have fought for equality in the workforce for decades. Global warming, green economy, sustainability, carbon credits, carbon tax...buzz words that are being discussed a lot more lately than they were in 2013 when Karen first recorded this interview. Since the first electronic video game tournament in 1972 at Stanford University, eSports has grown steadily. Yet the growth in the last 5 years has been astonishing. In 2015, eSports revenue was estimated to be $325M, with 235M participants, roughly $1.40 per. In 2020, eSports is expected to generate $1.4B with 589M participants, translating to $2.37 per.
