BiCurean takes typically combative topics and teaches them to play nice. Our view is that the mainstream reactionary rhetoric divides us and only helps those invested in the status quo. We seek to find answers beyond the most obvious. Join hosts Aicila and Erik as they dig into topics ranging from social and political to geeky and fun. Erik and Aicila are looking for the "BiCurean Moment" a point where contradictions meet.

Randolf has a YouTube channel and is the founding President of the Canadian atheists, which aims to normalize atheism in Canadian society (and hopefully the world), and to present atheism in the best possible ways. He occasionally post videos, primarily where atheism is the subject matter, although he also cover other topics from time-to-time. If you'd like to discuss atheism or religion, or some other topic of interest, please feel free to contact him as I'd be happy to engage with you in a conversation or interview, or participate in a live debate.
Talking about how "people are more important than ideas" is an attitude he's been presenting from time-to-time in promoting atheism, and it's partly in response to the attitudes of some religious people who believe that all life should revolve around religious doctrine (which is a collection of ideas).
Randolf also touches on leadership, and encourage people to "be their own leaders" because in many scenarios leaders, despite even the best intentions, don't/can't have everyone's best interests at heart. While leaders do serve important functions, I feel that each person is ultimately in a potentially-better position to know what their own best interests actually are.

Vanessa Otero is the creator of the Media Bias Chart, and the Founder and CEO of Ad Fontes Media
A licensed patent attorney in the Denver, Colorado area, Vanessa holds a B.A. in English from UCLA and a J.D. from the University of Denver. Vanessa’s formal education and professional career has centered on analytical reading, writing and reasoning, creating an ideal background for her to create a content analysis methodology for evaluating text.
Alarmed by the unhealthy state of the media ecosystem, Vanessa used her expertise in content analysis to create the original Media Bias Chart in 2016. Then in 2018, she founded Ad Fontes Media to fulfill the need revealed by the popularity of the chart–namely, to meet the demand for a map to help people navigate the complex media landscape, and for comprehensive content analysis of media sources themselves. Today, Ad Fontes Media uses a systematic approach to content analysis in which a team of politically-balanced professional analysts examine and categorize news content creating data that is useful to news consumers, educators, marketers, and even publishers themselves. Ad Fontes also offers training in its content analysis methodology through products and services for educational institutions and for individuals.
Vanessa is on the Board of Directors of Community Radio for Northern Colorado and is on the Advisory Council of Media Literacy Now. Vanessa has also been published or featured in articles and blogs on news literacy, news bias and free speech, social media, and conspiracy theories. These sources have included the Poynter Institute, BigThink, MarketWatch, Lifehacker, City A.M. and more. She is a much sought-after speaker at national news literacy workshops and webinars, and presented a workshop at the Northeast Media Literacy Conference this past fall.
Vanessa is committed to making the world a better place with her passion and belief in decreasing the polarization in our news and our society, as well as educating students, teachers, and the public on the true value of media literacy and the importance of a healthy news ecosystem.

Tara Galeano, founder of Rediscovering My Body and Boulder Sex Therapy, is an Author, Retreat Host, Speaker, and Sex Therapist who has worked with women for over two decades to get their sexy back.
She knows that there is pleasure in the body, beyond our wildest dreams, and every woman can access it. In “Rediscovering My Body”, Tara teaches women how to show up for pleasure in their lives. She rediscovered her own body after leaving her twenty-five-year marriage. Realizing that she had given so much of herself away, she knew that she needed to come back to the inherent wisdom of the body. Through reconnecting with her body, Tara was able to know what was true for her, how best to proceed from this wisdom, what was true pleasure, and most importantly, how to teach these lessons to other women who are clamoring for the same truths so that they too can transform their lives and reclaim their sensuality. Now Tara has embodied this path and is moving forward to share this with women everywhere with her book, her online courses, and community, and her retreats.

More in Common’s mission is to understand the forces driving us apart, to find common ground and help to bring people together to tackle our shared challenges. Drawing from groundbreaking research to test and find solutions, they work with partners that have the capacity to make a real difference at scale. And they help build the larger field of efforts to strengthen democratic societies against the threats of polarization and division.
Director of Researcher, Stephen Hawkins, joined us to talk about their most recent 7 country study, their election study results and touched on the American Fabric project they have launched. The question of 'how can we build and come together' continues to remain their priority, while the evidence suggests it is more elusive than any of us would hope for.

We were honored to have the Director of Research of More in Common, Stephen Hawkins, take some time to share about their history, goals, and discoveries.
More in Common was founded in 2016 to address division in society and find ways for us to focus on what we have in common. While there are similar forces threatening democratic societies, they have established separate national teams with their own national strategies, because they believe strategies to strengthen resilience against the forces of division must build on each society’s unique national and regional characteristics.
In their work, they aim for originality, strategic rigor and a sound evidence base. They put learning at the center of our work. They don’t have all the answers, but they are committed to deepening their insights, improving their approaches and measuring their impact. As a learning organization, they put a high value on collaboration and are committed to sharing their own insights generously with those who share their goals.

COVID19 has created a world in which news that would normally be headlines and stay front and center have been de-prioritized and forgotten. 2020 was already winding up to be a newsworthy year with the frenetic election cycle, Trump's impeachment, and the assassination of Iranian General Soleimani. Also, we discovered that if we close all the schools in the US, we won't have any school shootings for an entire month.

Many of us, children and parents, view 18 as a magical time when we are suddenly no longer in the same relationship we have been in since our children were born. However, that transition takes time, attention, and thought. Avery Russell coaches parents on how to bridge that transition and will talk about some of the things she teaches her clients and what motivated her to take this mantle up.
Service, mentoring, and leading are the core values Avery lives by. She is the founder and CEO of Stellamaris Coaching, and creator of Parenting 2.0 - "The Grief, The Relief, and What’s Next", a support group and workshops for parents of adult children. She also coaches one on one for parents who need a little more help connecting with their twenty something kids and developing a strong relationship. Avery has spent the last 25 years raising her four children, serving on boards in education, the arts, and in her community. She recharges her batteries playing badminton, reading, crafting, and laughing with friends and family.

Erik and I stand with the protesters and activists who are calling for broad sweeping changes in our communities to end state sanctioned harassment and murder of black people.
This episode is exactly 8 minutes and 46 seconds long. This is the amount of time George Floyd was slowly choked to death while a crowd of onlookers pleaded for his murderer to cease this brutal behavior.
We ask you to take the rest of this episode, which will be silence, to honor George Floyd’s memory, as well as the hundreds, if not thousands, of brutalized and murdered black people in our communities over the past 413 years. We hope you will feel the sense of heartache and shame that we do. Even more, we hope that feeling will spur you to action and allyship with our black community.
We will include links in the show notes with resources and further reading, as well as ways to get involved and make a difference.
Peace at any price is actually tyranny of the powerless. While peace is the goal, the path is justice. The brutalization of black people by the state is neither peace nor justice. Not standing against it is standing for it. If we want to end the violence, we must end it through justice and action.
In solidarity,
Aicila & Erik

WGT (Wave Gotik Treffen) = Wave Gothic Meeting. "WGT" is every year around Pfingsten: 4-5 Days. Next year ist 30th anniversary! One band of the first small festival with 5 bands in 1991 was by the way "Das Ich". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave-Gotik-Treffen - now around 200 Bands. It´s in Leipzig, located in what was East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Galeano had dreams of becoming an educator as a child— literally dreams. She would explain the etymology of the English language and teach Shakespeare, before she'd even read his work.
After graduating from college, she taught Beowulf and Macbeth to adult education students working on their high school diplomas. They were grandmas who wanted to proudly tell their grandchildren that they too had completed their high school education. Teens who needed to work during the day to support their families. Girls who were pregnant and waiting to give birth. She found that the content of the classes got in the way of her knowing these hardworking folks. So she gave up Macbeth and started focusing on the conversations. Eagerly, she learned more about her students, heard their stories, taught less, and listened more.
Galeano joined us to share stories of life in Coronavirus and how people are connecting in this time of social distance.

Erik and Aicila hope you will be inspired to dive into the rich cultural landscape that is Black History. Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The Black History Month 2020 theme, “African Americans and the Vote,” is in honor of the centennial anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment (1920) granting women’s suffrage and the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) giving black men the right to vote.

Erik & Aicila decided to be festively serious and look into the history of Christmas. It was a fun romp through Roman month long parties called Saturnalia and medieval attempts at economic justice with a Lord of Misrule leading peasants in tormenting the wealthy if they refused to share their abundance. Whatever you believe or however you celebrate, it's a time of year that has been about more than the traditions of modern America. We hope you enjoy this exploration of past to better understand the present. And we very much hope you have a holly jolly holiday, this year.

We figured since we are kind of nerdy and into this stuff and we have been massively confused about what impeachment is and why it mostly looks like an adolescent popularity contest (turns out that's how it's designed), we thought we would dig into it and share what we discovered in case any of you are having similar confusion.
First a HUGE thank you to Jessica and the BodyCountPod Crew! She put together this fabulously helpful and engaging overview of impeachment history- http://bit.ly/2KBCM1i
We reference a few news articles and the constitution linked below, as well as things we looked at but didn't actually quote on the show. In the end, our best advice is to realize that impeachment is unlike any other form of court process you have experienced. In a lot of ways, it is about whether or we as a country believe that what happened is right or wrong, there isn't much in terms of objective data to compare with. We hope this helps!
What is Impeachment? (from the dictionary of course) the action of calling into question the integrity or validity of something. "the prosecutor's detailed impeachment of the character witness" BRITISH a charge of treason or another crime against the state. "the king cynically abandoned him, encouraging his impeachment" US a charge of misconduct made against the holder of a public office. "the president is facing impeachment over the scandal"

She recently got tired of the sort of stereotypical travel Instagram photos and the plethora of travel listicles out there, so she started my own newsletter, Delve. This is where she shares meaningful travel stories. These are quite often more personal or have a more artistic feel to them so they're harder things to sell to magazines. It's basically a chance for people to peek into her travel diary or find out something a little deeper about a destination she visits.

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of
today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for
parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as
if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is
foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest
and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."
Who wrote that, and when do you think it was written?... it is an
extract from a sermon preached by Peter the Hermit in A.D. 1274!

Clarification Erik asserted the Civil War was about states right's. We know that it is was far more complex than that and that was an aspect of the causes.
Quote from Runaway World: There are three main areas in which emotional communication, and therefore intimacy, are replacing the old ties that used to bind together people’s personal lives – in sexual and love relationships, parent–child relationships and also in friendship. To analyse these I want to use the idea of the ‘pure relationship’. I mean by this a relationship based upon emotional communication, where the rewards derived from such communication are the main basis for the relationship to continue. I don’t mean a sexually pure relationship. Also I don’t mean anything that exists in reality. I’m talking of an abstract idea that helps us understand changes going on in the world. Each of the three areas just mentioned – sexual and love relationships, parent–child relationships and friendship – is tending to approximate to this model. Emotional communication or intimacy is becoming the key to what they are all about.

She continued: “The platform us Parkland Students have established is to be shared with every person, black or white, gay or straight, religious or not, who has experienced gun violence, and hand in hand, side by side, We Will Make This Change Together.”
