Going into 1999, there was only one movie on everyone’s mind: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
It’s amazing how time changes things, isn’t it? Twenty years later, young Anakin and Jar-Jar are punchlines, and the most memorable cinematic characters of that year include Neo, a dead Bruce Willis, and an Iron Giant. It was also the year in which directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Spike Jonze made breakthrough films and Kevin Smith created a biblical poop monster. It was, in short, one of the greatest years of cinema we’ve seen.
