04 - Why do we overcomplicate things or resist ease and flow?

This podcast will launch on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.***
The word that God gave me for this season is Gentle. I highly recommend asking God if he has a word for you right now-whether that is a word of the year or for a season.
Right now God is asking me to slow down and not try to produce anything. Winter seasons can be an invitation to rest but they aren't usually our favorite. We would rather be doing, be achieving, be producing. What if God's invitation to you is similar to what he's extending to me: "stop. slow down. you don't have to force anything right now. abide in me. and that's enough."
Isaiah 30:15 hits home with the invitation to rest and salvation and strength when it ends with "but you would have none of it". I hope we can be people who will accept God's good gifts that he extends to us.
This will also be the last podcast episode of Season 3!
And the announcement is that I am not sure when the next season is going to start. Listen in to hear more about this pause.

210 There's a tension that I feel like I often hold here: Should you quit something or do you need to start something?
Oftentimes we're doing too much of the things that don't fill our cup. So we need to quit something at the same time we need to start something else. If you want to confidently be yourself there are things that you need to shed so that you have the space for what is actually for you.
In today's podcast episode, I share more about this tension that we feel and give loads of practical advise on how to make these decisions when we feel like we're doing too much but feel pulled to start something new!
I want to give you practical steps to evaluate and take action so that you can be off the performance hamster wheel and do the work that you're called to, no the work you "should" do.

209 - As Christians navigate living in a fallen world, I see many grapple with whether or not we should trust other people. The suggestion seems to be to only ever trust God and then we'll protected from harm from people. But this isn't good theology or a best practice, it's a form of self-preservation. We're allowed to have expectations of people and we're allowed to desire to be cared for by people. There's a lot of shame I see in Christians as they wrestle with their desire to be loved, liked, and cared for.
You're desire to be loved and accepted exactly as you are is not a problem to be fixed, it's a need to be tended to. It's also important to be aware of how we're going about getting this need tended to. It's easy to make ourselves smaller or to be easy-going in an attempt to control whether or not we will be accepted. We don't want to rock the boat or give anyone an excuse to walk away which can lead to people pleasing and doing everything in our power to avoid them leaving.
Each of us is magnetic. We attract and we repel. When we live in authenticity and know our worth we attract people who value us and accept us-they are "our people" and we also repel those who don't get us or who don't accept us right where we're at. And this is a good thing!! It's tricky to learn but it's so darn freeing.
If you want to deepen your connection to God and yourself so that you can have stronger relationships with others, Emily's Connected course is for you!
208 - In this episode of the Abundant Grace podcast, host Emily Lewis shares her personal journey of letting go of religiosity and finding freedom in radical grace. She discusses how religiosity can feel like a burden and hinder our personal connection with God. Emily also talks about the societal pressures women face to constantly achieve and conform, which can further complicate their relationship with themselves and God. She shares her own experience of trying to please God through checking boxes and meeting expectations, and how discovering God's unconditional love allowed her to let go of toxic relationships and embrace her true identity as a beloved daughter of God.
105 - It's imperative for a strong relationship with God that we believe he is good and safe. In this episode, Emily explores the concept from the Bible, why it's important, and what well-intentioned people may be trying to convey by saying that God is not safe.

203 - I've struggled with my mindset lately; specifically the thought that I'm a failure.
I want to pass on the pep talk I've needed many times over the past couple of weeks for three reasons:
1) So that you know you aren't alone.
2) For you to be encouraged too
3) So you can release any shame or stories around the thoughts and feelings.

199 - In this episode, Emily dives into the power of letting yourself be misunderstood. She tells stories that show that the way in which people respond to us is more of a reflection of them than it is of us. She explains that even when we're coming from a place of love and kindness, we can't always control how people see us. It is important to know what to do when people trigger us and realize that we can't control others' perceptions of us.
By embracing this idea, we are able to realize that not everyone is going to understand our mission. It is freeing to give ourselves permission to walk away and allow ourselves to be misunderstood.

During this conversation, Emily and Boyd speak about navigating the tangled and unclear elements of our faith and how to become comfortable discussing our questions about them. By embracing the garden metaphor, remember to slow down and connect with yourself on a deeper level. 191 This episode is for women as well as men. Emily’s enlightening discussion with SJ Ladums, host of REST FUEL MOVE, can help women start to better understand themselves as individuals and help men understand and support women throughout their cycle. SJ likens the menstrual cycle to seasons and discusses what is happening during each season. Because our bodies are each unique, tracking your cycle to learn what is normal for you is important. That information can also be discussed with your partner to be able to support you in the best way. Emily and SJ also provide ideas for how to plan your schedule based on your cycle. Understanding the changes your body goes through can help you learn to give yourself grace and not push yourself to meet an unrealistic standard you see on social media.

190: In this episode, Emily shares the super simple yet powerful journal prompt she encountered at a worship experience led by Stephanie Palmer of Hope Transformed. Emily discusses using it as a filter for what you're walking through or what thoughts are running through your mind so you can become grounded again and re-center yourself. She talks about the tendency to jump from who God is to what we do. The prompt encourages a different perspective and is a great tool to use on a walk, write about in a journal, or just think through.

189: In this enlightening episode, Emily engages in a candid conversation with Sheila Gregoire and Rebecca Lindenbach, two inspiring women who delve into the intricacies of purity culture and advocate for knowledge and personal growth within the Christian faith. They challenge the fear-based approach of withholding information and instead encourage an empowering and inclusive mindset for women. Through their insightful discussion, they shed light on the limitations of purity culture, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive information to enable informed decisions, personal growth, and healthier faith relationships. Join them as they navigate the transformative power of embracing knowledge and inspire listeners to challenge restrictive norms and foster a more supportive and inclusive environment for women in Christianity.

188: In this episode, Emily delves into the topic of conviction and condemnation of the Holy Spirit, emphasizing the relational nature of our lives and the character of God. The episode highlights that our framework of life is rooted in relationships, and God, being relational Himself, does not condemn but instead seeks to restore and reconcile. Conviction is portrayed as a loving nudge from the Holy Spirit that prompts us to acknowledge our mistakes, while condemnation is recognized as an unhelpful and destructive force that attacks our sense of self-worth. By embracing God's grace and understanding His non-condemning nature, we are encouraged to pursue repentance, forgiveness, and the restoration of relationships in our spiritual journey.
187: This episode is a great jump start to do something you've been scared to do, a comfort that God is always with you, or a reminder to stay faithful in what He has called you to do. Emily discusses being equipped for what God is asking you to do and having confidence. Imagine having the same conviction and confidence that a 3-year-old has when they tell you something. We could accomplish a lot with that kind of confidence.
Emily also brings up a thought-provoking question. How would you show up tomorrow if you believed you had all the tools and skills that you needed for what God is calling you into or where he has you?

She shares examples from her personal and professional life where she had been guilty of this behavior, and how she learned to ground herself in the knowledge that she is enough, irrespective of outside feedback.
The goal is to detach from the need for external validation and instead focus on doing what we are called to do, with the knowledge that we are enough.
This week, be mindful of the weight you give to positive and negative feedback in your life and work towards being grounded in your sufficiency.

Emily discusses the story of David and Goliath and how this is an example of how God's view of us is the truth. As the quote says, "David's brothers saw a Shepard. God saw a king." We all get judgement from others at some point, whether it's well intentioned or not, but letting God define you instead of others is key. We need to own our place, but not in a negative way. Let's reframe our thought process to remind ourselves of what our "place" actually is. We are worthy. We are children of God. 169: The power of community is so strong, it's hard to put into words! Support cannot be underestimated. Of course, there's no denying that it can be difficult at times to take the leap and let others in. Social pressures may urge us to act as if we have it all together. The reality is that there are people in our community who want to support us! They want us to show up as we really are and lead by example in giving them permission to open up as well. In this episode, Emily Louis addresses the struggles with opening up to others, particularly those who have hurt us in the past. In addition to being more present and open to trusting in our expression. What happens when we put ourselves out there in scary ways? God pulls us through and brings us closer to those who are meant to be in our corner.

167 Disrupt that Negative Narrative..
In this episode, Emily talks about the negative narrative that we often associate with everyday acts. In a simple conversation with someone, who may be having a bad day, we assume that we've done something wrong or that we haven't been a good enough friend.
Our thoughts start to perpetuate our insecurities and we run this narrative of self-doubt. Emily gives some great advice on what steps to take when this happens.
Not every situation requires meaning to be assigned to it. When we're feeling that negativity or we're reading into something, Emily suggests that taking a step back and assessing the situation is an excellent place to start.

166 Do you want to be confident in God's promises?
Emily goes into an explanation of Exodus 12 about God's promises and how God words them in the past tense. She explains how amazing it is that God was so sure and so confident in our care that he told Moses and his brother Aaron that He will deliver them from Pharaoh. And He will bring them out of Egypt and they will celebrate with a feast on that day (the Passover) for generations to come.
He knows our past and he knows our future, and we can rest confidently in that knowledge.

In today’s episode, Emily covers the all too familiar feeling that creeps up on us when we’re just trying to care for ourselves, guilt. Guilt can play a large role in our self-esteem, self-care routine and peace of mind. She covers how to approach this uncomfortable feeling in a holistic manner. Breaking down her three steps she includes her own personal feelings about how this has affected her own life and how you can approach it in yours. And that gratitude is ultimately the answer to most of our internal struggles. If we can learn to advance toward the uncomfortable parts of our lives and feelings with this attitude, we can start to heal and begin the process of knowing our own worth.
And always remember, You Are Worthy.

This can seem like hard work, but what what we need to understand is that if God accepts and loves us as we are, then so should we! We don't need to get to the next better version of us to love ourselves as we are right now. Instead, we can embrace our worthiness, flaws and all, and appreciate all that God made us to be.

154 Some people say that it's a lie that God accepts us as we are and that it means Jesus died in vain or we're say that we don't need to change or grow.
Yet the Bible illustrates God's radical acceptance of us.
In today's episode Emily talks about the importance of God's acceptance and how that doesn't mean we settle but rather is the foundation for our transformation.
In the parable of the prodigal son, Jesus illustrates the radical acceptance of the Father. When the younger son has wasted everything and comes metaphorically crawling back, hoping to just be like a servant, his father doesn’t grill him, ask him how he plans to be different, or look at him with suspicion. NO! He runs to him, clothes him, and throws a party for him.
The parable doesn’t tell us anything more about the younger son, but I’m guessing his life was transformed because of this display of love AND acceptance by his father.
Saying that we are accepted, does NOT deny the power of God to transform us. This lets our weary selves fall into his arms. This lets us rest in his grace without wondering if we’ve done enough.
Knowing we are accepted allows us to shed the tough exterior and truly let God love and shine healing into the darkest, most embarrassing parts of our soul. The parts we hide or wish away.
When we perpetuate a message that God’s acceptance is conditional or when God’s people’s acceptance of others is conditional (calling me out too y’all) we make the bar or sporting event a more friendly, loving place.
Love without acceptance is love at arm's length. That’s not how God operates.
I’ll repeat something I said in the clip, God didn’t see you and think “oh I could fix that one up” or “I suppose I could make something out of that one”. NO! He said, “I want YOU. I love you. You are welcome.”
He sees you and wants relationship with you. He likes you, not just your potential.

146 It's the holiday season, and maybe you picked up extra work to help a coworker, agreed to join a neighbor's event, told your family you would finish the cleaning, or volunteered to gift wrap.
Let's examine our motivation behind the things we're doing!
We shouldn't be doing as many things for people as we are doing to control others' perceptions of us. Emily discusses how the intention behind what we do for others and maintaining that is important. The motivation behind giving and serving others can be very different, even if the action is the same.
Emily's story of maintaining a clean-ish house becomes untangled when she shifts the motivation behind it. Her internal pressures on maintaining a clean home stemmed from wanting to appear productive. She expresses how we can flip the narrative, and instead of doing something to control how others view us, we do it out of love. We can clean the house because it makes us feel good. We decide to stay home with the family to be present in our children's lives and in that moment. We said no to something to make another thing a priority.
Dive into this episode with Emily as she continues this December series on people-pleasing and self-acceptance. Learn how to make love your motivation rather than what other people think of you. Untwist those narratives and discover the key to radically shifting our actions.
Before the next episode plays, listen to Emily's prompt and take a moment to reflect on one area of your life you want people to respect you. Then, ask yourself how it would look different if you just loved instead of trying to control how other people perceive you.

145 "I leave home every time I lose faith in the voice that calls me the Beloved." - Henri Nouwen, The Return of the Prodigal Son
In today's Life-Giving Friday episode, Emily uses Henri's full quote (view here) as a reminder of our identity. It is our nature to find ways to define who we are in our hunt for our identity. What we do and fulfill can be replicated by someone else. However, what cannot be fulfilled or replicated is you.
You are loved for your individuality and your uniqueness. You do not need to look for approval from somewhere or someone else. Your identity is Beloved of God.
Whenever you begin to doubt your goodness and self-worth, write these affirmations down:
I am Beloved
I am chosen
I am loved by God
Your worth and value are not up for grabs. It cannot be changed or shaken.
You are beloved of God, and that is so powerful!

125. How to Start Fasting
In this episode, Emily unpacks the topic of fasting. Fasting is one of those things that we feel like we have to do exactly right or it seems like something to do to try to get something from God. It sounds performative and manipulative, right? Emily reminds us that neither of those things are true and that fasting can actually be a great tool to grow your relationship with God.
Listening through this episode you will hear: how fasting was used in during the ancient times of the bible in many different circumstances, and as well as Emily's personal experience with fasting.
Everything that is happening around us is spiritual in some way, shape, or form. There's so much that's going on in the spiritual realm - which we miss when we're just continuing to live and focus on the physical that's right in front of us.
This episode will help you be in tune with the Holy Spirit and as well as help you be more aware of God's presence and his voice.
When we fast, we do not do it out of ritualistic feelings or unworthiness but instead out of self control from the power that God gives us through the Holy Spirit. You are not worthless. Begin your fasting journey with the Lord and grow deeper with him.

112 In this episode, my sister Rebecca Montgomery joins me to talk about the problem with contrasting mediocre motherhood and Christ-like motherhood.
There's still a notion that Christians - especially women - should be grateful for little tiny bits of rest and just rely on Jesus for the rest. And while we 100% believe in relying on Jesus, the message that physical rest is wrong or that we should do without is not empowering women; it's leaving them under a load they were never meant to carry.

111 This life-giving Friday encouragement brought to you from Judges 6. God isn't just going with you, he is going AHEAD of you! He is orchestrating, directing and fighting for you!
110 Surrender can feel intimidating. In this episode Emily unpacks four of the ways that add to the weight:
If God feels untrustworthy
When it feels like it has to be a one time decision
If we're afraid of what God will take
If we feel like he doesn't want to give us our desires.
Some of these are helpful to just name and then others of these, Emily helps us flip the narrative around them.

Episode #109 | On today's episode, Emily discusses the importance in our everyday lives. Rest is a gift that we overlook so much, even though it is something so powerful for our body and mind. God encourages us to rest in him, even if we feel we have to accomplish so many things to finally take a break.

109 Have you heard preaching on Gideon that painted him as someone with weak faith? Have you ever felt hesitant to ask God for confirmation?
I think you're going to love today's episode!
I'm diving into the story of Gideon and unpacking some beautiful truths from the story. We can learn so much from the way that God interacted with Gideon - I learned so much preparing for this episode. It was a lot of fun to just teach through the passage in this episode and let what God says speak for itself.
There's a lot that has been inserted into the story of Gideon and when we interpret Gideon's requests as doubt, it has direct implications on how we pray and walk out our faith in God.
I pray that this episode is an encouragement to you and helps to strengthen your faith and relationship with God!

Not only are these words void of compassion, they are theologically toxic.
But they are nearly a perfect example or a fear and shame based view of God.
This video is especially for you if you seen statements like that and aren't exactly sure how to refute them. It's an unbiblical lie that you can completely toss.

Mistakes by Influence Music
Your relationship with God and your relationship with yourself are inseparable.
I'll say it a different way: Having a healthy view of yourself and of God go hand in hand.
And not in a "the lower I think of myself, the more I think of God", self- deprecating way. Just no.
Safe is the word that comes to mind.
When you know how safe it is to bring all of you when you talk with God, the more real you are.
When you embrace everything about you - the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful - you don't shame or fear yourself anymore.
You don't have to worry about how God or others perceives you. You don't have to hate yourself to be more spiritual.
You've likely been taught subliminal messages that make you feel hard to love (or directly that you aren't supposed to love yourself) or you've been taught false things about God that confirm how you feel toward yourself.
I'll say it even another way:
As you continue learning about God's love for you, you will love God, and you will learn to love yourself.
It's not that you're perfect, it's that you learn to be comfortable with and accept your imperfection.
Loving yourself is an important part of your healing journey. Amen? 😘
Here's an affirmation for you:
God loves me. I love myself.
1 John 4:19 Psalm 139:14

78 Life-giving Friday Episode to remind you that even though God was taught to us much like Santa Claus, Jesus isn't like that.
God’s not keeping score of your good and bad deeds. There’s no making a list and checking it twice.
He’s not sitting up in the clouds waiting to bless the good little girls and boys and punish the naughty ones. Jesus satisfied the payment and God remembers our sins no more! Gone are the days of trying to measure up or get in good with Him.
God isn’t distant, only caring about your behavior. God wants relationship with you. He wants you to pray, to spend time with him! And he’s accessible right now!
He came to rescue us from list keeping! (Hallelujah!!🙌🏻)
The rules were never intended to save us so let that weight fall hard off of your shoulders.
In Jesus you are accepted. Come boldly and access the relationship that is wildly available.
Wishing you the best Christmas.

60 Today I found a book that outlines 10 steps for every Christian to live in victory. The book offers a list of 10 things to do and promises victory over nearly every area of life from anger to addiction to child rearing.

In this episode, I talk about a story I've told myself and how some circumstances have helped me shift my perspective. We can limit God's ability to use us when we only expect him to use our strengths but when we surrender as his vessel he can use us in unexpected ways too that bring him so much glory.
How often have you disbelieved someone when they pay you a compliment? This episode is a result of me doing just that very recently. I realized that in my deflection, I am not honoring the person who paid me a compliment and what feels like humility is actually pride.
When you learn to be grateful for someone's feedback, you can give God the glory for growth and work in your life. There is so much value when you affirm someone's compliment and learn to totally receive it.
It is said of Jesus that people "marveled at the gracious words that proceeded out of His mouth". How many of us would like the same thing to be said about us?
Tools and framing that Chelsea Andrews teaches equip you to approach typically polarizing topics with grace. In this conversation we covered depolarization, how tribalism impacts polarization, what confirmation bias is, and so much more.
These tools are extremely helpful as we get outside of the boxes that we have been raised in and walk out our journey of healing. They continue to support us as we have conversations with people we disagree with and make room for nuance within conclusions and opinions.
You can follow Chelsea on Instagram to learn more about peacebuilding and watch her put this stuff into practice in her Stories.
Today I have Drew Anderson on to talk about Christians and politics. Thank you for listening to this important conversation. You can follow Drew on Instagram and check out his book No Longer Self Evident: Are We More American Than Christian? and the podcast companion for the book.
Some of the talking points from today:
• America: Christian Nation?
• How to Get Involved in Politics without being tied to our political position or approach
• How to love people whom we disagree with
• Loving people and affecting change like Jesus did
• Is the gospel enough?
Today I'm talking about being still and listening; making space for God to speak and making margin for ourselves to rest.

It’s easy to assume that anything worth having is hard to get and when it comes to our relationship with God, it can leave us grinding and striving, not realizing there is a different, better way. Jesus invites us only into things that are life-giving. He invites us to cast our burden aside and enter into an easy yoke. So today, that’s what I’m doing; inviting you to let relationship with him be easy.
