Today marked the final day of birthing services bat the Mersey Community Hospital at Latrobe. While the Mersey will still provide prenatal and antenatal services, all births will now take place at the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie. Changes to maternity services on the North-West Coast will take effect from Monday with maternity services being centralised at the North-West Regional Hospital in Burnie. More than 4000 cyclists, many of them from interstate, will tackle a torturous 230km bike ride on the North-West on Sunday. The event start and finish at Devonport, and includes some horrendous climbs, including Cethana and Cradle Mountain. The Federal Government has confirmed $1 million in funding it promised during the election to get the $160 million Cradle Mountain Master Plan "investment ready." The inaugural Cradle Peaks Challenge drew hundreds of interstate riders to the North-West Coast last year and this year's event, on October 30, promises to do much the same. Some of the 235km course has been changed due to un-repaired road and bridge damage from the June floods, but organisers have devised a course they are convinced will be equally as challenging, while maintaining some of the iconic climbs many riders want to tackle. Former Coastal rail enthusiast Bill Field,of Melbourne, is about to release a book on the historic spur line colloquially known as the Nietta Line. The line ran from Ulverstone to Nietta from the 1890s to the 1950s. The official name of the line was Methanga to Nietta. Bill's book is called Methanga to Nietta: The History of the Ulverstone to Nietta Railway. He spoke to Martin Agatyn about the book, which will be launched on September 24 . . .
