For too long mental health has been ignored or stigmatized. This podcast provides insight into mental health as well as embraces and invites the conversation about mental health to help break the stigma and focus on the upsides!
EXPLICIT CONTENT WARNING: This episode may not be suitable for all listeners. This episode contains topics such as suicide that can be triggering. Listener discretion advised.
To kick off Mental Illness Awareness Week Jonathan and Kevin share their experience with their sexuality and discuss battles from their past and present with lighthearted humor. The LGBTQ+ community is not only affected by the discrimination and invalidation of others but also mental disorders. A member of the LGBTQ community is 2.5 times more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and substance misuse (Mental Health America, 2019). Compared to heterosexual youth, LGBTQ youth are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide (CDC, 2016).
Jonathan and Kevin discuss ideas for others to be more accepting of themselves as well as others. These guys are the best and I am truly grateful they hopped on the podcast. Hi everyone! The episode I have been talking about since the start of the podcast is here! Dr. Jose Alvarez, a local psychiatrist, answers frequently asked questions on psychiatry and emphasizes the importance of mental health and why you should treat it as seriously as your physical health. Dr. Alvarez is willing to continue to work together in the coming year to address any mental health questions you may have. Wishing everyone happy holidays and thank you for listening to the past 7 episodes. I hope that it made you feel less alone. #theupsidesfm

Apologies for the hiatus! I wanted to post an episode on this day to remind everyone to reach out or have the conversation of mental health with their loved ones. Michelle is joining me in this episode to talk about mental illness and the stigma around it. We also discuss some symptoms we should be on the look out for with our family and friends. We want everyone to feel comfortable to share their struggles and find ways to start feeling better. The first step is to talk about it. Hope this helps some of you. E-mail us at theupsidesfm@gmail.com if you'd like to share your story or have any questions.
