The Harvard Independent
TIDE, a new podcast series by the Harvard Independent produced by Charles Xu and Marissa Garcia. Together, they explore how the climate crisis has affected the city of Boston and driven individuals to take action.
In the first episode of TIDE, we focus on the students activists behind the movement for climate justice. One of these groups, Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard, has mobilized to demand that Harvard University withdraw investments in the fossil fuel industry. Students, faculty as well as alums have joined together to advocate for a sustainable and socially responsible future.
On November 23, at the annual Harvard-Yale game, Divest Harvard took its protests to the Yale Bowl, rushing onto the field to call both universities to divest from fossil fuel companies. Their actions delayed the game by approximately 40 minutes and made the rounds on many national news networks, including the New York Times and the Guardian. We got on-the-ground coverage from this protest.

In this episode, I interview Derek Taylor, a junior here at the College concentrating in Computer Science, a field that, after his brutal first tastes of its challenge, he was enticed to pursue instead of Mechanical Engineering. Proudly Central American and hailing from Miami, Florida, Derek tells us why he finds himself so tied to the culture here in Cambridge, a community that is lustrous in the fountain pens it sells and the education it gives.
On Episode 3 of Season Four, the Indy is asking Harvard undergraduates, “What are your ties?” Podcast Editor Marissa Garcia and Indy Staff Member Claire Albert interview Genesis De Los Santos, a senior from Dorchester, Massachusetts concentrating in History and Literature with a focus on Ethnic Studies. She is writing her senior thesis on hair as it relates to femininity within the Dominican Republic, and she discusses her own decision to cut her hair. She sits down with us to tell her story.
