Whatever is best doesn’t come easy. It takes work.
For those who love, study and learn the Qur’an, upon entering paradise, angels will don these believers with garments and crowns, including their parents who fostered the best learning.
Allah has given us some illustrations of the rewards He has prepared in paradise, and they are like nothing we’ve seen. Paradise will have mansions which will look like stars they are so high.
And who will these mansions be for? Principal Wadud Hassan explains it is for those who will be told to recite Qur’an. The more you recite, the higher and higher levels the reciter will rise. When the reciter stops determines the level of his or her home in paradise.
Heaven will contain tents like hollowed pearls 60 miles from each side.
These rewards are especially for the believers who apply the perfume of Qur’an to your soul. It’s a smell palpable to angels.
Earning paradise means hard work, worship and deeds like fasting, reading Qur’an and exhibiting good character. The next time you face a challenge, like waking up on time for Fajr prayer, think of the treasure Allah has waiting for you and work hard in this short life for that eternal happiness.

In Surah At Tariq, Allah prompts us to consider our origin: “Let people then consider what they were created from!” (At-Tariq 86:5 The Nightcomer)
Ustadh Michael Wolfender uses this ayat along with examples like IKEA furniture, cow stomachs, birds’ eyes and stomachs to consider advanced design and our purpose.
Our purpose is to learn about and worship Allah, as we will return to Him. This life is a test of patience and gratitude for the bounties Allah provides and withholds.
In the second half of Surah At-Tariq, Allah advises of the guidance He has sent in His Book: “Surely this ˹Quran˺ is a decisive word and is not to be taken lightly.” (86:13 - 14) The Qur’an advises us of our purpose, in our faith and path in this life with guidance for earning eternal happiness.

If you saw a treasure chest wide open permitted for you, would you not take? Ustadh Michael Wolfender presents the reality of the best night of the year with a wild example worth paying attention to.
In Surat Al-Qadr (97 The Night of Power), Allah repeats three times which He doesn’t do anywhere else in the Qur’an in this manner. Allah reveals He sent the Qur’an on a night in Ramadan called Laylatul Qadr - the Night of Power.
Then Allah asks the reader to consider what exactly is this night that has so much power. This is where Ustadh Michael uses his outrageous analogy to help us understand the rewards for worship being accepted on this night.
Laylatul Qadr includes a special visitor who only comes to earth once a year now. Angel Gabriel brought Allah’s Message to prophets, concluding with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In the fourth verse of Al Qadr, Allah describes the earth filling with angels on this special night.
How can you take advantage? We don’t know which of the last ten nights of Ramadan exactly is Laylatul Qadr. Instead, we search for it. It might be one of the odd nights, particularly the 27th of Ramadan. The best way is to worship each of these nights, give charity, pray, read Qur’an and make dua, asking of Allah. He is The Most Generous. He is The Creator. He is All Powerful. He can grant us everything we wish for and it would not decrease Him in any way.
The treasure and reward is available one night a year. It’s up to us to avail ourselves of Allah’s Bounty.

Principal Wadud Hassan shares some of the rewards from fasting, including:
- Allah has created a special gate in paradise called Al Rayyan for those who fast
- Fasting is a shield which will protect you from hellfire on the Day of Judgment
- Charity and night prayer extinguishes fire
- Fasting and the Qur’an will intercede for believers on the Day of Judgment
- Fasting one day removes a believer seventy years away from hellfire
- When those fasting are in the company of those who are eating, angels send blessings for those sacrificing for Allah’s Sake
There are levels of fasting beyond abstaining from food and drink, such as staying away from what’s forbidden in bad behavior. Those fasting can then focus on good values like cleansing your heart by forgiving others and seeking forgiveness.

Once a year, the earth is crowded with angels. Allah announces: “That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter.” (Al Qadr 97:4 The Power) This night is in the last ten nights of Ramadan and it’s among the ways Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares how we can get close to angels and earn Allah’s Pleasure.
Jummuah means congregation in Arabic and Fridays are when Muslims meet together for the congregational prayer in the middle of the day. Muslims attending jummuah can earn the rewards of a mountain of gold in blessings as angels take attendance of who comes to jummuah and pay attention to the weekly reminder.
Angels are made of light and they look for where believers are worshiping so they can join. But if you get distracted, they’ll leave. We can’t see or hear angels here, but everyone entering paradise will. In Surah Ghafir, Allah shows how angels supplicate for believers saying: “Our Lord! Admit them into the Gardens of Eternity which You have promised them, along with the righteous among their parents, spouses, and descendants. You ˹alone˺ are truly the Almighty, All-Wise.” (Al Ghafir 40:8 The Forgiver)
When you make dua or ask of Allah on behalf of others, angels make the same request for you. They listen to our duas and report to Allah all of our actions.
Back to that one night when Allah crowds the earth with angels. It’s called Laylatul-Qadr or the “Night of Power.” Allah sends a special visitor: the archangel Gabriel, the angel who brought revelation of the Holy Qur’an. Knowing how humans would question how or whether one of their own could see or meet an angel, Allah sent revelation affirming how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did see Jibreel, declaring in Surah Takwir: “I do swear by the receding stars which travel and hide and the night as it falls and the day as it breaks! Indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the Word of ˹Allah delivered by Gabriel,˺ a noble messenger-angel, full of power, held in honor by the Lord of the Throne, obeyed there ˹in heaven˺, and trustworthy. And your fellow man is not insane. And he did see that ˹angel˺ on the clear horizon” (At-Takwir 81:15 - 23 The Overthrowing)
Since revelation completed with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Jibreel only visits once a year. Search for Laylatul Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan to be in the company of angels worshiping with you.

All of His books Allah revealed in the month of Ramadan, while most Muslims may only consider the Qur’an’s revelation to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the cave of Mount Hira. This is among the reasons Ramadan is a special month with increased blessings. Allah closes the doors to the hellfire and opens the doors to paradise. Prayers increase in reward 70-fold. Optional prayers are elevated to the reward of obligatory prayers. Beyond rewards as an incentive, Ramadan is a month to develop and build your relationship with Allah, remembering Him in your heart. Build good values, like patience.
Principal Wadud Hassan shares the origin story of an early scholar of Islam, his beginnings as a sinner, the death of his daughter and a dream where she helped bring him towards Allah. It’s guidance like this which can help us chart a straight path to understand the value of our short lifetime compared to the Day of Judgment which will last 50,000 years.

Allah doesn’t expect perfection. He expects to worship only Him, talking to Him in prayer and doing your best. Allah sent us His Book, the Qur’an, beginning its revelation in the month of Ramadan where He commands fasting: “Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185 The Cow)
Ustadh Michael Wolfender provides examples of believers who changed themselves based on their relationship with The Holy Qur’an, the significance of the qibla changing in the month before Ramadan and how Prophet Abraham and his son built the Ka’ba in Mecca. The power of the Qur’an is evidenced in how it changed civilizations, the direction for Musims to pray and turned lives to accept Islam.
Ramadan is a time to prepare and change yourself to follow the blueprint Allah provides in the Qur’an. Do your best, Ustadh Michael explains, is what Allah is asking for and ask of Him as He says in the ayah following the verse on Ramadan: “When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.” (Al-Baqarah 2:186 The Cow)

Allah created all humans as equal. But modern times and history show example after example where humans disobeyed the universal value of treating each other equally. Such racism has ignited wars, spurring sinning behavior Allah detests.
As a means of recognition, society can then single out certain people to ‘honor,’ such as with Black History Month. Ustadh Michael Wolfender explains the conundrum this displays on ensuring we each recognize the value of one another every single day by seeking to better our character.
The best amongst us only occurs in righteousness. If someone belittles you, respond with peace. Don’t let others lose your inner peace. Allah is with each of us all the time, as He says in Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow 2:186): “When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.”

Taking care of your soul is as important, if not even more, than taking care of your body. Emotions come from and impact your soul. How do you feel when you're angry? A purpose of anger is protection, not to adversely impact others.
So, as Principal Wadud Hassan advises, the best way to respond to anger is with patience, compassion, and forgiveness. He shares the example of how our prophet Muhammad ﷺ respnded to a bedouin who grabbed the prophet ﷺ by his collar as a means of introduction and attention. Our prophet’s ﷺ response was to turn with a smile to then understand what the bedouin’s need concerned.
We often think of our soul as if it’s within our heart, in our chest. It’s not really an incorrect way of thinking as how you view your heart and your chest is a physical manifestation of your emotional state. Principal Wadud gives the example of the famous dua of Moses (as) which Allah shares in Surah Taha 20:25 - 28 as his prophet asked of Him: “O my Lord! Open for me my chest (grant me self-confidence, contentment, and boldness.) And ease my task for me. And untie the knot (the defect) from my tongue (i.e. remove the incorrectness from my speech). That they understand my speech.”
Start feeding your soul by remembering Allah, ask of Him and know that Allah is with those who are patient and mindful of Him. Remembering Allah is actually a form of positive self-talk. Indeed, Allah has built a home for every human in paradise. This life is a test to earn this eternal reward, in part by developing ourselves and our souls with these habits:
Make wudu - cleaning yourself and asking Allah to wash away your sins and have the body parts you’ve washed shine with light to guide you on the Day of Judgment
Frequently say “In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficient, The Most Merciful.” Such as when you start, are in the midst of and when you end anything.
Pray. Worship is our conversation with Our Creator with the effect of calming us from daily distractions.
Ask of Allah by making lots of dua. Allah loves when His servants ask of him.
Don’t not talk with someone for three days when you are experiencing conflict with them. Do greet them and resolve to end the issue before 72 hours have passed.
Shake hands, of course, while observing hygienic protocols. Humans benefit from touch.
Greet others with a greeting of peace.
End your day ensuring you are not harboring grudges; it’s easiest to do this by forgiving others.
Read. The first command Allah sent in the revelation of the Qur’an is “Read.” Build a connection with Allah’s Book by starting with a translation of the Qur’an and you will begin to understand the value of learning to understand its Arabic.
Write, whether it’s an email, post, journal or letter. Writing is cognitive and cathartic.

As a parent looking for an Islamic school, a key criteria to look at is the Quranic curriculum. At Good Tree Academy, the Qur’an’s lessons are integrated into the curriculum, which also means the school does not qualify for state funding.
If we want treasures from Allah, we must strive for them in the decisions we make, including ardently supporting institutions such as Good Tree Academy. “O humanity! Indeed, you are laboring restlessly towards your Lord, and will ˹eventually˺ meet the consequences..” Surah Inshiqaq (The Sundering) 84:6
In this week’s khutbah, Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares lessons from the Qur’an on how to benefit from two treasures Allah has revealed. The first are the short surahs at the end of the Qur’an and the lessons they contain, including not to be mean as ultimately this really only hurts yourself.
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth.” Surah Tawbah (The Repentance) 9:36
The second treasure are the four sacred months: al-Muharram, Rajab, Du al-Qa'dah, Du al-Hijjah when Allah says we should take advantage of the opportunity to get closer to Allah by increasing our worship, memorizing more and studying the meaning of Allah’s Book. Winners encourage each other to do good. Losers won’t take advantage of the treasures Allah provides. Worse, they prevent others from doing good.
Make good decisions. Seek to please Allah and He will be pleased with you, provide you guidance and rewards in abundance.

Everyone faces times of difficulty and may think life is not fair. We might look around and see others around us do not have the same responsibilities we have or are not struggling like we may be. Ustadh Michael Wolfender recites the beginning of 90:1-4 Surah Al-Balad (The City) where Allah announces everyone at some time on this earth will face hardship. We are not alone in this test. Allah is the Most Just. He is not unfair to anyone. This is all a part of our test to make us worthy for the great reward of Paradise.
Many believers in the early days of Islam went though severe hardship, but Allah recognized their struggles and took them away as Islam spread and flourished. Allah will send people your way who will recognize what you are going through and help bring relief to you. The test is not to complain, to believe that the ease is surely to come. Sometimes we don’t see that our hardship can be a lot worse and that it is easy compared to what others are going through. Allah gives us examples of others who have suffered greater difficulties than us. With these examples in mind we can move through our hardship towards ease.
That ease is in Allah’s Guidance. Ustadh Michael concludes with the beginning of Surah Taha (20) which has the power to bring believers to the peace of Islam, where Allah advises why He sent His Book and that is it easy for those seeking to understand and please Him.

We should think of ourselves as a soul with a body instead of a body with a soul. It is in our nature to know who Allah is, to know the truth but sometimes we lose our way. Principal Wadud speaks about what Allah says in 16:125 Surah An-Nahl (The Bee) “Invite all to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and kind advice, and only debate with them in the best manner. Surely your Lord alone knows best who has strayed from His Way and who is rightly guided.” If you know someone who has lost their way or needs to be reminded, do it in a way that lifts them up and does not bring them down. Allah even advised His prophet Musa to do this with Pharaoh, who was most astray as one of the worst human beings. Allah says in 20:44 Surah Taha “Speak to him gently, so perhaps he may be mindful of Me or fearful of My punishment.”
We only have one life, one chance to do things right. If someone is missing their chance we should not let them be but try to remind them, to offer sincere advice that can bring them back to their best. Offer the advice in the best way. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that our religion is sincere advice. Give advice not to make someone feel bad or make you feel better than them. Give it because you really want to help them.
Principal Wadud offers these steps to consider when someone offers a correction or advice: be open and curious; make an intention to consider the feedback; don’t judge what’s being offered and explore ways to benefit from the advice.
Principal Wadud concludes with a true story showing the rewards of patience which is among the proofs that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final messenger of God.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares the story of the first revelation. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in secution, thinking, pondering when the angel Jibreel (Gabrial) came to him with and said Icra, read (Surah Alaq (96) The Clot). The Qur’an is the ultimate reading, the ultimate recitation that has great power to transform the lives of people, to elevate their humanity, to guide them to a better way of life.
Allah chose a person, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was known to be trustworthy to give the responsibility of delivering this super powerful Word to the people. The Quran is mercy. What is this mercy? It is the guidance that alleviates pain, confusion, and destruction to the self, the society and all creation.
Allah mentions in this same sura to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that with this trust he has given him, he will be tested, he will go through hardship, but all of these hardships will ultimately make him stronger. Many tried to harm him but he was under the protection of Allah. They only harmed themselves. We ask Allah to give him peace and blessings for bringing us the Qur’an, the super powerful word of God.

Principal Wadud Hassan reflects on how remembering Allah in our hearts can control our tongues. When our time is up in this world, we will return to Allah and we must be wary of how we spend our time and resources before we meet Allah SWT. Allah will grant us what we desire in the hereafter if we follow what he desires in this world. Therefore, we must be mindful of how we speak to others and ensure that we are always speaking kindly to each other even during disagreements.
Our Prophet peace be upon him was kindest when he was speaking to others and said that the strongest person is the person who can control their anger. Principal Wadud tells the story of Abu Bakr and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They were sitting in the masjid when a man came up to Abu Bakr and began to argue, saying ill-mannered things to him. Abu Bakr looked at the man, stayed calm and didn't respond. After the third argument, Abu Bakr responds to the man to correct him and the Prophet ﷺ gets up and walks away. Abu Bakr follows the prophet ﷺ and asked him why he left. The prophet ﷺ said that when you are quiet, there is an angel responding on your behalf because you had patience but when you engage, shaytan appears. When we engage in an argument, we are in the presence of the shayateen and this will take us away from the prophet ﷺ and Allah SWT.
We must be mindful of what we are saying with our tongues and say things that bring us closer to Jannah. By remembering Allah in our hearts, and practicing patience, we are able to regulate our tongues from hurting others. Talk to Allah often and your heart will see Allah.

In this khutbah, Principal Wadud Hasan shares how we can grow gratitude, expressing it at times like when we wake up, when we close our eyes, eat and pray. In surah Ibrahim (Abraham) 14:7, Allah says “And remember when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful I will surely increase you;” Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always beaming with gratitude. Even when he had the worst day he was always grateful as reflected in his smile, his character, his good deeds. All of this was because of the gratitude he felt in his heart. Allah loves us more when we are appreciative, when we give thanks.

As Muslims, sometimes we have to go on a journey to get closer to Allah by visiting the houses of Allah SWT in Mecca and Madina. When you visit Masjid al Nabawi in Madina, the prayer of one rakaa is equivalent to 50,000 rakaa and when you pray one rakaa at Masjid al-Haram, it is equivalent to one hundred thousand rakaa. According to several historians, the earth was all water and the first piece of land started at the Kaaba where today, Muslims circle around to bring themselves closer to Allah SWT. Seven heavens above the Kaaba, there is a house of Allah called Bait al Mamoor where 70,000 angels do tawaaf from sunrise to sunset and when those angels complete tawaaf, another 70,000 angels come and do tawaaf and will not come back to do tawaaf until the day of judgement.
The Kaaba is where the Prophet prayed and was harassed, attacked, and endured the dumping of animal feces on him as he prayed. This is also where Muslims freed the house of Allah from idols. Sometimes we must take certain journeys and face difficult obstacles in order to bring ourselves closer to Allah. Allah tells us to visit the houses of Allah and make provisions before making that journey. The main provision we should be making is Takwa. Takwa is having the mindfulness of Allah, being deeply aware and conscious of Allah, and strengthening that connection to Allah.
When Prophet Abraham left his wife Hajar with Ismail in Mecca, there was no Kaaba, food, or water present. Hajar had takwa and had six qualities in her heart that brought her closer to Allah.
1. Silence: One of the first qualities that Hajar had to get used to was her heart. She had to learn how to be alone with Allah with no one around her but Allah. We can understand the revelations of Allah better when we tune out everything else and be alone with Allah.
2. Attachment: Hajar had to sacrifice her attachment with everything and everyone other than Allah. This included her husband, her neighborhood, food she loved, and everything she was attached to so she could attach her heart to Allah.
3. Reliance: Her heart relied heavily on Allah when she was left alone and dealing with difficulties.
4. Hope: Hajar never gave up hope on Allah even during these difficult times. Her hope was bigger than her fears.
5. Action: She actively tried to bring herself closer to Allah by seeking Allah. She would walk on rocks between Safa and Marwa to bring herself closer. She did not give up and worked hard to seek Allah’s bounty and with that movement, Allah gave her an opening when the Angel Jibril came and struck the ground that so much water came out she had to say zam zam (stop stop). Today, that water nourishes the souls of pilgrims until the day of judgement.
6. Gratitude: She was soaked in gratitude for the water and was grateful for what Allah had given her that time instead of asking for more.
When we are going through a difficult time, it is important to have takwa, put in the effort and seek Allah. May Allah grant us the tawfik to continue to strive towards these qualities that Hajar possessed. May Allah grant us tawfik to have a beautiful heart.

The people of Mecca knew who Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was, what he was like, his kind character, how he was well-trusted and loved, and how he interacted with people. However, when he came with the message of Allah and truth, they rejected him and what he was preaching. This was a test for the people of Mecca because they were used to worshipping idols.
Allah SWT tells us about the struggle of the people of Mecca in Surah Al-Qalam (68 The Pen) which was one of the first surahs that the prophet ﷺ received. The pen was the first thing that Allah created and Allah told the pen to write and the pen wrote everything, including all events to occur throughout time.
Allah SWT gave Prophet Muhammad ﷺ three characteristics as described in this surah; his sound intellect, his devotion to his faith which will result in great reward, and the best behavior in his interactions with others. The prophet ﷺ was very well-trusted by the people around him. When everyone in Mecca was fighting over placement of the black stone in the Ka’ba, Muhammad ﷺ was chosen to settle the argument.
In this surah, Allah SWT lists the characteristics we should avoid. You should not give your attention to someone who spends their time swearing by Allah whether it’s true or not, talks down to people, puts people down, hears something from someone and passes it to another person while exaggerating what is said, tries to prevent people from doing good things, and someone who takes away people’s rights and sins all the time. On the day of judgement, these people will try to make sujood in prostration and they will not be able to because when they were able to, they chose not to.
However, as perfect as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was with his endowed three good characteristics, the people of Mecca still did not want to accept him and the message he was preaching. Allah gave Prophet Muhammad ﷺ an example to help him with the people of Mecca. In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah recounts the story of brothers who were in charge of a garden that was rich with many fruits which they inherited from their father. Their father used to let poor people pick from the garden as they pleased and they knew of their father’s generosity. Even though they knew it was the right thing to do, the brothers decided they were not going to let the poor take from their garden because they were worried about losing money. Due to these actions, their behavior began to change. They would whisper to each other, give bad looks to people, walk around like a gang, and intimidate people. So Allah destroyed their garden. That is when the brothers realized that everything had been taken away from them due to their actions, and they turned back to Allah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told the people of Mecca this story to guide them to do good before it is too late.
May Allah make our behavior and manners nice and guide us to follow the Prophet’s good behavior characteristics.

There is no one else that deserves our unconditional obedience but Allah SWT and on the day of judgement, when we meet our Creator, our wealth, children, and things of this world will not be with us. Therefore, we should not forget the real purpose of being in this life and in this world is to worship Allah and focus on our hearts for the sake of reaching our best selves.
On the day of judgement, we want to come before Allah SWT with a heart that is pure and peaceful. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him expressed that if you are able to in the morning and evening make the state of your heart where there is no ill will towards anyone then do so and this is considered his way or sunnah. Those who practice this sunnah truly love the prophet ﷺ and purifying our hearts brings us closer to the prophet. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also explained that whoever defends the reputation of his brother, Allah SWT will defend his face from the fire on the day of judgement.
Principal Wadud Hassan presents the idea of psychological safety and how, for instance, Google found that this made their teams work effectively. Psychological safety ensures safety for risk-taking in the face of being seen as incompetent, negative, and disruptive. In the face of adversity, the team can safely take risks and work together on a problem without incurring backlash. Psychological safety is the environment that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ created for his sahaba. His companions were able to come to him and ask permission or guidance on anything and it was a safe space for them with no judgement or repercussions. He would ask Allah SWT to purify their hearts and provide them with guidance. This shows how the prophet ﷺ believed in everyone’s potential.
Principal Wadud shares a story about Sheikh Ali, also known as Hakeem al Ummah or the Grand Mufti of Hind and his encounter with another sheikh during a gathering of sheikhs. That sheikh told Sheikh Ali that he feels he is the worst among these scholars and that everyone around him was better than him. Sheikh Ali points to a Hindu man passing by and says what if Allah gives that man guidance tomorrow and he dies with faith in his heart, questioning if he would have such purity of faith as well. This is the level of clarity and cleanliness that was in the heart of these scholars which provides us guidance.

Ever had difficulty dealing with those around you? Allah sent us His messenger, Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, as the best example for us to learn how to be kind, courteous, respectful, understanding and merciful to those around us.
Ustadh Michael Wolfender asks students to think of a time when you felt special because someone did something special for you. Naturally, you would love that person and be appreciative of the things they do for you. This is one of the reasons why we love our parents.
Those that met Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him felt very special and there are many instances where the love he shared with others impacted them greatly. Amr ibn al-As felt that the prophet ﷺ loved him so much that he went to the prophet to ask him who he loved the most. The prophet said Aisha, his wife. To which Amr asked who the prophet ﷺ loved among the men. Prophet Muhammad responded with Abu Bakr. Amr realized he was not on the top of the prophet’s list but that he loved the prophet so much because he hadn’t experienced such love before.
Zayd Ibn Al Haritha was kidnapped as a child and sold in Mecca, where he became a freed slave under Khadeja, the prophet’s first wife. When Zayd’s father traveled from Yemen to find his son, he offered the prophet ﷺ money in return for Zayd. The prophet told Zayd’s father to keep the money and suggested that Zayd decide what he would like to do. Zayd wanted to stay with the prophet ﷺ because he had never met someone who treated him so well. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ treated Zayd like his own son and Zayd’s father understood and respected that love.
During the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah would use a stick to line everyone up for prayer and while everyone was dressed for battle, one man, Suad Ibn Azeyah was not wearing a top. He claimed to the prophet ﷺ that he poked him with the stick and insisted he get to poke the prophet back. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave Suad the stick to poke him back but instead Suad got on his knees and hugged the prophet. When asked why he did that, Suad told the prophet that it was a trick to hug the prophet before going into battle.
Prophet Muhammad’s love and kindness was also shown through his marriages. He would kneel down and wipe the floor, stitch his own clothes, and treat women so well that all the women who knew him said they have never seen a man like this. His wife Aisha loved him so much, she never remarried.
Everyone felt so special around Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and he never failed to show everyone the strongest love. May Allah inspire us to do as best as we can to follow in the footsteps of the prophet through his special love and kindness.

Principal Wadud Hasan explains the importance of our love for Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and how following the ways of the Prophet, allows us to love Allah SWT. In Surah Tawbah (The Repentance) 9:128 of the Quran, Allah says that He has sent a prophet that loves us so much, our suffering distresses him. Our prophet loves his believers so much that when we are not happy, he is not happy.
Through prayer and thikr, we are able to love the prophet and feel his love in our hearts. If we want to see how much Allah SWT loves us, then we have to see how much we love the messenger of Allah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told his wife Aisha that he makes duaa and remembers his ummah five times a day, after every prayer. How can we not pray for our prophet ﷺ when he thinks of us so often and shows so much love for us?
Last week, Ustadh Michael Wolfender discussed how the prophet ﷺ showed mercy for the people who tortured him because one day their children and future generations could be Muslims. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cared about us so much that he showed mercy to our past generations. His mercy to the people of Mecca led Muhammed bin Qasem to conquer Sindh in South Asia which brought Islam to the South Asian subcontinent. His companions were able to conquer other areas of the world and spread Islam through that moment of mercy for the benefit of future generations of Muslims. Our prophet ﷺ loved us and cared about us so much that he showed that mercy.
Here’s a way to connect with our prophet ﷺ: close your eyes and imagine going to the masjid of the prophet in Madina and meeting him. How would you feel if you entered the masjid and you see Prophet Muhammad ﷺ there, welcoming you? Instead of resting, the prophet ﷺ has decided to respond to your salaam and welcome you because he would embrace even the worst of us. Now imagine how would it feel in the hereafter, when we are finally seeing our prophet, the one that loved us even more than our parents?
It is important to remember that we will be in paradise with those who we love and by loving the prophet ﷺ through prayer, thikr, and following his ways, insh’Allah we will be reunited with our prophet ﷺ in the hereafter. We must always feel the love of Prophet Muhammed ﷺ in our hearts and that will bring us closer to Allah inshAllah.

In Surat Al-Anbya (21 The Prophets), Allah subhanallah wa ta’ala tells Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him: “We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a mercy for the whole world.” (21:107)
Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares examples from the prophet’s mercy many times throughout his life and more so during the worst and most difficult day of his life. The prophet ﷺ told his wife Aisha that the hardest day of his life was when he went to Dtahif and the people stoned him and chased him until his feet were bleeding and his sandals were stuck to his feet. On that day, Angel Jibril came to the prophet and advised the angel of the mountains is here and ready to crush the people of this city between two mountains for what they did to you. Instead, the prophet ﷺ expressed nothing but mercy for these people and that hopefully one day, their sons and daughters would become Muslims. The people of the city did not know of his mercy and still wanted to kill him and killed some of his followers. Generations later, this city is indeed populated by Muslims.
One day, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw an old woman carrying bags on her way home and he helped her carry them all the way home and as they were walking, she praised him for helping her. Along the journey, she began to tell him of a man poisoning the city with his lies and that is breaking families apart with his. She told the Prophet to avoid this man and that his name is Muhammad. At that moment, the Prophet did not tell the woman that it was him she was speaking ill about until she asked for his name at the end of the journey. The woman felt horrible for believing all the evil things people were saying about they Prophet and after getting to know him, she joined Islam.
When the prophet ﷺ returned to Mecca after completing his Hijra to Madina, he returned to the people that killed his followers and harassed him and made life horrible for him. He returned to Mecca victorious because the people had embraced Islam and still, after all that he had faced with the people of Mecca, he still returned to them and harmed no one. Think about the amount of mercy it would take to not react with anger against these people.
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed away, his companions and followers made sure the entire world knew of his mercy. SubhanAllah, the Prophet’s mercy spread to his Shahaba because when they went to conquer Jerusalem, they did not fight the people there. Like the Prophet, they showed mercy. This is how Islam spread to the most eastern parts of China, to Indonesia, through the Middle East, and large parts of Africa.
What can we do in order to live with the mercy of the messenger ﷺ?
- Offer prayer 5 times daily: Salah is a mercy and we can stay alive by doing our five prayers. Modern day psychologists recommend meditating and taking time to be at peace. Salah is prescribed for you and everything Allah SWT has given us is the best thing for you.
- Fasting: Allah SWT has given us fasting to be merciful to our bodies. Modern day science tells us one of the best ways to be healthy physically and psychologically is to fast.
The Prophet ﷺ made sure that in his interactions with all people, he was kind, fair, and most importantly merciful. It’s essential for us to continue to show that same mercy to our friends, our communities, the world, and ourselves, for the sake of Allah SWT.

Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, grew up as an orphan and Allah SWT took care of him and made sure he was taken care of. However, there were times when the prophet ﷺ faced hardships in the society he lived in, being perturbed by the prevalence of idol worship, inappropriate taking of life and ill treatment of orphans among other wrongs. So the prophet ﷺ would isolate himself in a cave to have time to think and that is when the Angel Jibril visited Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and revealed to him the Words of Allah SWT beginning with Surah Al-’Alaq (96 The Clot). The beginning of the Qur’an’s revelation signified Allah choosing Prophet Muhammed ﷺ as His final messenger.
With the frequency of revelation and visits from Angel Jibril, the prophet ﷺ came to enjoy the close companionship of Allah’s angel. But then the visits from Angel Jibril stopped. About six months went by and the prophet ﷺ began to ask himself what he could have done to stop Angel Jibril from visiting him. His enemies in Mecca began to taunt him for being abandoned by the angel he spoke about. Then Angel Jibril returned, revealing Surah Ad-Duhaa (93 The Morning Hours). This was like a bright light after darkness. For six months the prophet ﷺ had endured negative feelings and loss, but instantly found relief and light in the Words of Allah SWT.
Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares how this resonates with us today. Sometimes we have feelings of abandonment, sadness or face depression but it’s important to remember that Allah is always with us. Just as the prophet ﷺ saw the light at the end of the tunnel through Allah’s Guidance, we all will find our light as well. Allah knew how His prophet was feeling when Angel Jibril revealed Surah Ad-Duhaa, just as Allah knows when we are in pain or facing hardships. Allah SWT told the prophet in Surah Ad-Duhaa that He has not forgotten him and that the hereafter is much better than this life. In verses 3 - 5, Allah says: “Your Lord ˹O Prophet˺ has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful ˹of you˺. And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one. And ˹surely˺ your Lord will give so much to you that you will be pleased.” (93: 3 - 5)
If you are always in the light then you will not appreciate the light. After darkness, we value the light which follows. Allah SWT will make us go through difficult times begetting negative emotions but when we turn to Allah and when things get better, we are so much happier. We thank Allah for letting us go through hard times and for guiding us towards the light, like he did with His prophet ﷺ as an example for us.

1,443 years ago Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, made the first Hijra or journey from Mecca to Madina. The prophet ﷺ and his companions made that hijra to practice Islam and for the sake of Allah SWT. In His Book, Allah explains His Command for this journey to escape difficulty, even though making it was risky, hazardous and uncomfortable (Surah Al Baqarah 2 : 218 and Surah Anfal 8:74).
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
أُولَٰئِكَ يَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
As for those who believed and those who migrated and struggled in the path of Allah,
they do hope for Allah’s mercy and Allah is Forgiving, Very Compassionate
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2 : 218)
People who make Hijra for the sake of Allah leave what’s comfortable, so they can be a better person and a better muslim in a new place. For this, Allah grants forgiveness to His true believers.
How do we understand the spirit of Hijra today and how it pertains to us? Our hijra is a spiritual journey and a hijra of the heart. Our spiritual journey is when we go from our lower self to our higher self. Our lower selves follow distractions and actions which take us away from Allah’s Pleasure. When we evolve to our higher selves, we have the Influence of Allah, the prophet ﷺ and the angels. Examples of when we have the Influence of Allah include reading the Qur’an, praying, making thikr, visiting mosques, and when we show kindness to others. We have the influence of the prophet ﷺ when we follow his character and study hadiths which are his teachings and lifestyle. We have the influence of the angels when we do good deeds and behave with good character, showing mercy.
Principal Wadud Hassan discusses three ways we can complete our hijra so to earn Allah’s Forgiveness and Mercy:
- Intention: Your heart must make the intention to go from your lower self to your higher self. Change your bad habits to good habits that bring you closer to Allah SWT. Make an intention by writing it down.
- Association: Who are your acquaintances? Always associate yourself with people who help you get closer to Allah whether this is a teacher, friend or family member.
- Attention: Focus on one thing that you can do that’ll help change you and pursue that change.
Principal Wadud shares how he used this process in a time of hardship and, inshAllah, through our hijra, we will reach Allah’s Mercy and Forgiveness on our hearts as He describes in Surah Al-Anfal (8 The Spoils of War):
وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَاهَدُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَالَّذِينَ آوَواْ وَّنَصَرُواْ أُولَـئِكَ
هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا لَّهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ
Those who believed and emigrated, and struggled for God’s Cause, and those who gave refuge and help - they are the true believers and they will have forgiveness and generous provision
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:74)

All of Allah's messengers had the same message of Islam - Adam, Noah, Ibrahim, Moses, David, Jesus, Muhammad, peace be upon them all, are among those mentioned in the Qur'an.
In Surah Al-Ma’idah (5 The Table Spread), Allah declares, “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islâm as your religion.” (5:3)
To make this guidance applicable, Allah's final messenger Muhammad ﷺ advised to be careful who you follow, be careful who you spend time with, be careful who you listen to and be careful what you listen to. Because you will end up following the ways of the people you hang out with, including in speech, dress, actions and even thoughts.
Everyone is born Muslim and indeed it is those we surround ourselves with who influence our actions. As Muslims, it's important to share Islam with those you share time with. Be strong in your faith and be careful not to follow ways which go against Islam's guidance of peace.
In Surah Al-Furqan (25 The Criterion) ayat 27 - 29, Allah shares the plight of those who had the opportunity to embrace Islam and then, when it’s too late, they will ask themselves why they didn’t follow Allah’s final messenger ﷺ. They will regret instead having spent time in poor company which has bankrupted an eternity promising peace.
Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares the story behind these ayat, of a man who accepted Islam and then recanted this based on who he hung out with.
From this, we learn our purpose in this life is to earn the Pleasure of Allah, do good deeds, make good decisions. A way towards this is to seek to be among those who are connected to Allah.

Each of the prophets sent by Allah delivered the same message: believe in one God. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares from Allah’s Book how He reveals Himself to us. Brother Michael shares the story of a visit from Angel Gabriel in human form to prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s Peace and Blessing be upon him and how Allah’s archangel questioned Allah’s messenger on the message of Islam, including the six articles of faith.
Sincerity in seeking to be the best servant to Allah is to worship Him as if you can see Him and to be content with His Guidance, what He provides and the message of truth as delivered by His messenger Muhammad ﷺ.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender reminds us how angels will visit us when it is our time to return to Allah. It can be a time to be happy to see and meet them, especially if you’ve taken advantage of seven times when angels pray for you:
- When you are eating suhoor, the pre-dawn meal prior to fasting, angels mention you to Allah based on your intention, as Allah says fasting is between Him and His believer.
- Arrive early to be in the first row at the masjid
- Sit after salah and remember Allah as angels will ask Allah to forgive you and have mercy on you
- When you teach others good things, angels and all the animals on earth make dua for you
- When you make dua for someone who is not with you, Allah appoints an angel to say ‘ameen’ so your request on behalf of another applies to you, too
- When you spend for the sake of Allah, Allah returns what you spend
- When you make wudu before going to sleep, an angel is as close as hugging you all night; if you wake up, the angel asks Allah for your protection and forgiveness

Ustadh Michael Wolfender recites from five surahs in the Holy Qur’an where Allah explains, among other aspects of angels, the protection He provided the delivery of His Book by Angel Gabriel. Al-Qadr (97 The Power) discusses the one night every year in the last third of Ramadan when Allah floods the earth with angels and why this night carries the power of 1000 months. Even Angel Gabriel descends on earth that night, though his mission of delivering the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is complete.
One of the attributes of Allah of which He is known by is Al Lateef, The Subtle. Brother Michael explains that developing a relationship with Allah helps you understand this attribute, for instance, in how Allah helps you see what is subtle. And Brother Michael provides some examples of how this applies to angels in our presence. He shares a story of a hospitalized man who spoke to angels and their conversation with him to understand that those afflicted with ailments who get angry about that are suffering punishment from Allah. Those who are patient with their ailments receive the reward of it being an expiation. When you are content with Allah, it raises your degrees of favor with Him.

Verses 32 - 34 of Surah Ibrahim describe Allah and His Might with some examples including rain, fruits, ships, rivers, the sun and moon, day and night; including there are countless blessings we cannot complete enumerating.
Ustadh Michael emphasizes the power of dua, asking of and remembering Allah as when you please Allah, He gives you more. Surah Ibrahim memorializes how prophet Ibrahim (as) made a dua asking Allah to ensure his descendants were consistent in worship: “My Lord! Make me and those ˹believers˺ of my descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my prayers.” (14:40)
Ayah 7 of Surah Ibrahim includes the guarantee of how remembering Allah ensures He provides more: “And ˹remember˺ when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.’”
Allah guarantees the best for His believers, including paradise where angels will visit you.

The Muslim lunar calendar means Ramadan moves back about 10 days every year. Ramadan is a month where Muslims fast, staying away from food and drink during the daytime as primary items per Allah’s Command. When you are strong enough to stay away from food and drink during the daytime, you realize you have the power to stay away from what you're not supposed to do and to withhold yourself from something you really want.
The most successful Ramadans begin with a plan, which correlates to taking action in life. Science has underscored the benefits of fasting though there is no determination on the best way to achieve this - other than the Guidance Allah provides in Surah Al-Baqarah (2 The Cow) where Allah details that fasting is for a prescribed period of the month of Ramadan.
More importantly than physical benefits of fasting is the spiritual connection and mental resilience fasting develops. Allah says fasting is between Him and His worshipper. No one needs to know you are fasting. Allah is pleased with efforts His believers take in His Way, including rewarding happiness for the advent of the month of fasting.

Guest khateeb Hammad Qasim Siddiqui describes why Allah created each of us imperfect, prone to error. This creates our opportunity to ask for His Forgiveness and understand how close He is to each of us.
In Surah Al-Furqan (25 The Criterion): Allah says: “Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds, for those, Allah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (25:70)
A key to closeness to Allah is through dua or asking of Him. Start dua by praising Allah and thanking Him for the blessings He provides. Brother Hammad concludes with an example of how sincerity in dua can result in Allah changing sins to good deeds, resulting in the reward of entry into paradise.

Allah explains the significance of the month of Ramadan starting in the second surah of the Holy Qur’an: "Ramaḍân is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful. When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺."" (Al Baqarah 2:185 - 186)
We learn the Qur’an was sent down in the month of Ramadan and when His servants ask, Allah is near and answers those who ask of Him. Ustadh Michael Wolfender hares four surahs showing the power of Ramadan we can't see with our own eyes.
The first is Al-Qadr (97 The Power) where Allah explains sending down the entire Qur'an to the lowest heaven on Laylatul Qadr, known as the Night of Power and thus this night is better than a thousand months. It is also annually when all angels visit earth including angel Gibreel. Laylatul Qadr began the year Gibreel came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with the first five verses of the Qur’an from Surah Al-’Alaq (96 The Clot). This occurred in a cave on Mount Hira and angel Gibreel continued to deliver revelation over the course of 23 years.
The second is Ad-Dukhan (44 The Smoke) which Allah begins: "By the clear Book! Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night, for We always warn ˹against evil˺. On that night every matter of wisdom is ordained by a command from Us, for We have always sent ˹messengers˺ as a mercy from your Lord. He ˹alone˺ is truly the All-Hearing, All-Knowing — the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between, if only you had sure faith.” (44:2-7) The blessed night referred to here is Laylatul Qadr, thought to be one of the odd nights in the last ten during Ramadan. This night is when Allah sends HIs Decrees for the coming year. It is on this particular night Muslims search for to seek Mercy from our Master as he hears those who ask and understands how we feel inside.

There are seven surahs in the Holy Qu’ran referred to as the ‘musabeehat’ in Arabic. They start with phrases of glorification of Our Creator. They were revealed by Allah to bring comfort and relief to His Believers. The first is Surat Al-A'la (87 The Most High), This surah brought so much comfort of Prophet Muhammad that he often recited it in jummuah, the Friday congregation, and the Eid clebration prayers. Glorifying Allah reminds us of His Perfection and this world is not perfect. This brings peace to believe in and seek to understand Allah’s Perfection, including in all that He creates and decrees.
The second surah, Al-Isra (17 The Night Journey), was revealed in what is referred to as The Year of Sadness, when Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ wife, uncle and son, who were all beloved relatives to him, returned to Allah. It was during this time that Allah provided His prophet ﷺ the miraculous journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and ascended him ﷺ to heaven to receive gifts including the command for daily prayers and the two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah (2 The Cow).
Muslims partake of these gifts daily in worship, glorifying Allah when bowing and prostrating. Allah begins Surah Al-Isra: “Glory be to the One Who took His servant ˹Muḥammad˺ by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.” Glorifying Our Creator brings believers ease. The Qur’an is a cure from disease and harm. In the 82nd verse of Surah Al-Isra, Allah says: وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٌۭ وَرَحْمَةٌۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۙ وَلَا يَزِيدُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارًۭا the first part of which translates as: “We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the believers.”
Other surahs in the musabeehat Allah sent during times of Islam’s early revelation to ease the hardships His believers faced, including a seige from 300 soldiers. With the right intention, actions and asking of Allah, relief comes. In this situation, the Muslims dug a trench and Allah sent a sandstorm which caused the soldiers to retreat. Remembering Allah’s Perfection brings peace, comfort and strength.

The beginning of Al-Hadid (57 The Iron), Al-Hashr (59 The Exile) and As-Saf (61 The Ranks) all start with: “Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah. For He is the Almighty, All-Wise.”
Al-Hashr ends with: “He is Allah: the Creator, the Inventor, the Shaper. He ˹alone˺ has the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Him. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.”
Al-Jumu'ah (62 The Congregation, Friday) begins with: “Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Allah—the King, the Most Holy, the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
At-Taghabun (64 The Mutual Delusion) “Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Allah. The kingdom is His, and all praise is for Him. For He is Most Capable of everything.”

Ustadh Michael Wolfender recites from Surah Quraysh (106 Quraysh) where Allah acknowledges the blessings He provided people in Mecca at the time of Islam’s onset. These blessings included a variety of food and safety in a desert. However, when humans get used to blessings as normal, they forget these favors indeed are blessings from Our Creator. This can even lead to, as in the case for the Quraysh, disbelieving in the Signs of Allah by not being thankful to Him. This angers Allah.
So we should remember Allah and thank Him for the blessings He provides. Or He may take away these blessings, as its own harsh reminder. This was the case in Texas’ recent winter storm. Snow took away electricity, literal power, in the state. Of course, many take the blessing of having electricity as normal. Ustadh Michael reminds it is a blessing that Allah took away this blessing of normality. Normality can breed forgetfulness. Removing this normality can also breed thankfulness to Allah. We need reminders of the Blessings from Allah. Say bismillah (“in the name of Allah”) before eating. After a meal, say Alhamdulillah (“all praise and thanks is due to Allah”).
Ustadh Michael references Surah 56 Al Waqiah where Allah points out His Blessings in verses 63 – 72: ”Have you not considered what you sow? Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who do so? If We willed, We could simply reduce this ˹harvest˺ to chaff, leaving you to lament, “We have truly suffered a ˹great˺ loss. In fact, we have been deprived ˹of our livelihood˺.” Have you considered the water you drink? Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or is it We Who do so? If We willed, We could make it salty. Will you not then give thanks? Have you considered the fire you kindle? Is it you who produce its trees, or is it We Who do so?”
Food, water and heat are Blessings from Allah. Not complaining is showing gratitude for Allah and to Him. Asking Allah (making dua) is showing gratitude in asking Him to return His Favors, such as life without a pandemic. Maintaining a school environment such as Good Tree Academy is a blessing. Being able to pray, worship Allah and bow down before Him is a blessing. Many don’t have or partake of these blessings. We should be grateful for and look for the blessings Allah provides and not complain. Patience and gratitude are traits of those who are successful, earning Allah’s Greatest Reward of eternity in His Paradise.

Surah Al-Anam (The Cattle ) is the sixth chapter of the Qur'an with 165 verses which were revealed all at once. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares two verses or ayah from the Holy Qur'an which ultimately underscore the peace of Islam in its appropriate practice. Translations of the two ayah from Arabic are:
"Indeed, Allah is the One Who causes seeds and fruit stones to sprout. He brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living. That is Allah! How can you then be deluded ˹from the truth˺?" (6:95)
"Whoever Allah wills to guide, He opens their heart to Islam. But whoever He wills to leave astray, He makes their chest tight and constricted as if they were climbing up into the sky. This is how Allah dooms those who disbelieve." (6:125)
Looking at the beginning of 6:95, we learn Allah as Our Creator is The One who opens seeds and causes soft saplings to grow. In the same way, Allah can open a believer's chest as true power is in being soft, not harsh. Power is in submitting to the Commands of Allah which allows the believer to be relaxed.
In 6:125, Ustadh Michael uses the example of a hot air balloon and how the lighter air inside causes it to rise.
Being guided in Islam provides relief, similar to how deep breathing provides relaxation. In doing this, you feel your chest expand when taking deep breaths. Islam is submitting to Allah to acheive peace. Without this relaxation, one's chest feels squeezed with worldly concerns, worries and fears.
Using this same literal technique of breathing to expand your chest allows a believer to breathe when reciting the first chapter of the Noble Qur'an, Al Fatihah, to feel the connection in daily prayer. This draws a wave of relaxation throughout the body, expanding your chest as a believer submitting to Allah.
Relaxation triggers hormones allowing your brain to be relaxed. Recite surah Al-Fatiha slowly. When you recite Qur'an slowly, you feel relaxed.

Allah trains your heart to be touched by the Qur'an when you seek to only worship Him. Whoever who has a heart who wants to know Allah is the best. This is a premise in Surat ‘Abasa referencing the blind man who is now memorialized in the Qur’an. Allah made him famous due to his dedication to learn about Him. And the lesson Allah taught his prophet ﷺ brought him to tears. Allah cares about the heart which is eager to learn. This will raise your rank with Allah and He is The Loving.
We can learn from the Signs of Allah. Everything in creation is a Sign of Allah and this can draw you closer to Him.

All of Allah’s messengers came with the same message: worship Allah alone. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares four lessons from a contemporary of Jesus, John the Baptist, and their correlation to the fifth ayat of Surat Al-Bayyinah (98 The Clear Proof): “... even though they were only commanded to worship Allah ˹alone˺ with sincere devotion to Him in all uprightness, establish prayer, and pay alms-tax. That is the upright Way.” (98:5)
What are these lessons from Allah’s prophet? Don’t worship other than Allah alone, giving charity can save you, angels love the smell of those who are fasting and when you remember Allah, it is your own fortress you build of safety. Further, John the Baptist advised the importance of connecting your heart in prayer and focusing your mind, praying as if Allah is in front of you listening to each word and answering each of your requests.

Among the lessons from Prophet Ibrahim is that of conviction at a young age, guidance and steadfastness in belief. Ustadh Michael Wolfender references two passages in the Qur’an of Allah telling Ibrahim’s story, beginning with Surah Al-Anbya (21 The Prophets) from ayah 57 - 65. Ibrahim advised those in his community that when they would be gone, he would take action against their devotion to idolatry. And when the community was away, he broke their idols, except for the biggest one where he left his tool used to break them hanging. Upon discovery of this act, questions arose as to its perpetrator. Youthful in age, Ibrahim spoke against the idols and their worship as the community questioned him in public. His response: the big idols committed the act and why not ask the idols around him? Allah recounts how this consideration prompted awareness of the errors in not worshipping The One Creator: “So they came back to their senses, saying ˹to one another,˺ “You yourselves are truly the wrongdoers!” (21:64)
But as humans do, they changed their minds again, failing to accept the truth that idol worship is wrong. Blinded by their own desires, they literally threw Prophet Ibrahim into a bonfire they built. Ibrahim is known as the Friend of Allah, and friends protect each other. Ibrahim attested the greatest ease in his life was the coolness Allah provided him as he endured the flames of this bonfire, saying for him Allah is enough.
Ustadh Michael recites the dua Ibrahim made asking of Allah from Surah Ash-Shu’ara (26 The Poets): ˹He is˺ the One Who created me, and He ˹alone˺ guides me.˹He is˺ the One Who provides me with food and drink. And He ˹alone˺ heals me when I am sick. And He ˹is the One Who˺ will cause me to die, and then bring me back to life. And He is ˹the One˺ Who, I hope, will forgive my flaws1 on Judgment Day.” “My Lord! Grant me wisdom, and join me with the righteous. Bless me with honourable mention among later generations. Make me one of those awarded the Garden of Bliss. Forgive my father, for he is certainly one of the misguided. And do not disgrace me on the Day all will be resurrected - the Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit. Only those who come before Allah with a pure heart ˹will be saved˺.” ˹On that Day˺ Paradise will be brought near to the God-fearing (26: 78 - 87)
From this, Ustadh Michael reminds it is the successful who will earn paradise by coming before Allah with a pure heart, no jealousy, no slander and no anger. Life’s hardships is Allah purifying our hearts. Prayer helps provide a pure heart, proper behavior and to feel better. Prayer is connecting with Allah. Humans are imperfect, committing sins and often even unknowingly. This begets the power of seeking forgiveness. Be cautious of making excuses, using the cover of doing as the majority may and thus fooling yourself into errant ways without seeking forgiveness.

Allah tells us in Surat At-Tur (52 The Mount): “Indeed, the righteous will be in Gardens and bliss, enjoying whatever their Lord will have granted them. And their Lord will have protected them from the torment of the Hellfire. ˹They will be told,˺ “Eat and drink happily for what you used to do.” They will be reclining on thrones, ˹neatly˺ lined up ˹facing each other˺. And We will pair them to maidens with gorgeous eyes. As for those who believe and whose descendants follow them in faith, We will elevate their descendants to their rank, never discounting anything ˹of the reward˺ of their deeds. Every person will reap only what they sowed.” (52: 17-21)
This starts with the five pillars of Islam: belief, prayer, fasting, charity and pilgrimage. Make sure you cover the basics of belief and worship, as every prayer is your conversation with Allah asking of and thanking Him. The more you remember Allah, the more He hears you. Work on improving character, as arrogance deflects entry to paradise. And level up your rank in heaven with Qur’an, fasting and hajj.
Ustadh Michael underscores the importance of prayer, reminding that when salah is good, all will be good on the Day of Judgment. The first thing Allah said to Moses when he spoke with Him was the command to worship One God and establish prayer to remember Allah. In Surah Maryam, Jesus says that Allah has ‘entrusted me to perform prayer and give charity throughout my life,’ as an example for us all.
The Day of Judgment includes an accounting of each of our deeds, with the successful receiving their book of deeds as Allah describes in Surat Al-Inshiqaq (84 The Sundering): “As for those who are given their record in their right hand, they will have an easy reckoning, and will return to their people joyfully. And as for those who are given their record ˹in their left hand˺ from behind their backs, they will cry for ˹instant˺ destruction, and will burn in the blazing Fire. For they used to be prideful among their people, thinking they would never return ˹to Allah˺. (84: 7-14)
Focusing on the positive, when family members make it to paradise, just one’s piety and character can raise the entire family’s level in heaven. Such is the Might and Mercy of Our Lord.

The kings who were father and son, Dawood and Suleiman (as), were aware of where their blessings came from, so Allah gave them more because they had the right attitude. In Surat An Naml (27 The Ant), Allah gives examples of these prophets acknowledging their blessings from Allah. In Surat Sad (38 The Letter ‘Saad’), Allah acknowledges the blessing Dawood was provided in his son: “And We blessed David with Solomon—what an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺. (38:30) Allah then describes Suleiman’s love of horses and an incident where he was busy inspecting his horses at Asr time, as Ustadh Michael explains. Recognizing the distraction his love of horses provided, Suleiman ordered to get rid of the horses, preferring not to have anything to distract him from Allah and that praying on time is most important. Allah continues in the 38th surah then describing how Allah gave him more and more, including control of the wind.
This story shares the lesson of controlling your time and giving importance to prayer. Ustadh Michael then references from ayat 15 – 16 of Surat Al Fajr where Allah says: “Now, whenever a human being is tested by their Lord through ˹His˺ generosity and blessings, they boast, “My Lord has ˹deservedly˺ honored me!” But when He tests them by limiting their provision, they protest, “My Lord has ˹undeservedly˺ humiliated me!”
Most people are not alert and don't realize blessings from Allah, boasting when they get things they don’t deserve and then complaining when something bad happens to them.
Instead, Ustadh Michael advises following the lesson of recognizing the importance of time and praying on time to earn a place among those Allah acknowledges at the end of Surat Al Fajr in ayat 27 – 30 describing the resulting reward on the Day of Judgment: ˹Allah will say to the righteous,˺ “O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well pleased ˹with Him˺ and well pleasing ˹to Him˺. So join My servants, and enter My Paradise.”
Ustadh Michael concludes with Suleiman’s dua which was prompted by the namesake of the 27th surah (An Naml ‘The Ant’): “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favors which You have blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please you. Admit me, by Your mercy, into ˹the company of˺ Your righteous servants.” (27:19)

In this season of thanks, Ustadh Michael Wolfender provides lessons from Surat An Naml (27 The Ant) focusing on a father and son who naturally and genuinely thanked Allah (27:15-16) Who thusly granted them more and more. The father Dawood and his son Suleiman were kings in their time who recognized how Allah provides individuals favors specific to each of us. You simply have to look and recognize them and be thankful to Allah. Like when Suleiman was leading an army and heard an ant as referenced in 27:18: “And when they came across a valley of ants, an ant warned, “O ants! Go quickly into your homes so Solomon and his armies do not crush you, unknowingly.” And then in the next ayat where instead of ignoring a small creature’s concern, Suleiman turns to Allah: “So Solomon smiled in amusement at her words, and prayed, “My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You have blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please you. Admit me, by Your mercy, into ˹the company of˺ Your righteous servants.”
He made this dua to Allah thanking Him for the blessings He provides and parents, recognizing that what matters is doing good deeds pleasing to Allah over seeking the acceptance of other people. He concluded this dua asking Allah to make him among the righteous people who go to Paradise.
In 27:17, Allah advises how He provided Suleiman the capacity to speak to birds and other measures of power and control specific to Suleiman. This is also true how Allah endows each of us individually. Recognizing this helps to understand how we need Allah to be pleased with us to earn paradise.
27:20 provides another example of Suleiman connecting with animals: “˹One day˺ he inspected the birds, and wondered, “Why is it that I cannot see the hoopoe? Or could he be absent?”
The bird advised him (27:22 – 25) of a queen who led her people in worshipping the sun instead of Allah. And when she received his letter (27:28 – 31), she decides to send a gift (27:35). To which upon receipt, Suleiman replies (27:36) that what Allah provides is better and that he doesn’t need the gift. Typically, humans are gratified upon receiving gifts, rather than considering the best provision consistently is provided by Our Creator. Suleiman declares the fact that the gift givers are sun worshippers, which is wrong. He cares about their belief and not about any gift from this society. This conviction ends well as the queen comes to understand Suleiman’s true interest and she accepts the beliefs he so wishes to convey of Islam’s tenets (27:44).
This surah entails many actual realities commonplace in fictional blockbusters such as
super powers, super heroes and magical powers. The Qur’an, as Truth, advises of this reality: Allah gave Suleiman more because he was alert, he knew what comes from Allah and he was appreciative. Allah then gave him more as reward for Suleiman’s consistently keeping Allah on his mind.

Qur'an will give us cure and is a mercy for believers. Ustadh Michael Wolfender provides the example of one of the early believers in Islam, a slave, and how the Qur’an made him strong despite torture he endured for his faith. Ustadh Michael uses this example to illustrate how many are slaves to video games, which inherently, due to addictive behavior, teach you how not to take care of yourself. As stimulating activities, the psychology of video games makes the participants eager for further engagement, primarily due to dopamine release. This chemical release trains the brain to thus determine nothing is more fun than video games. Ustadh Michael explains how the 'triumph circuit' propagates a distortion of reality causing the participant reduced ability to overcome real life challenges, partly because of perceived false senses of victory derived from video games. Anxiety presents itself as the participant misperceives values of social status, sincere friendship and family relationships due to silo’ed activity. The body loses the ability to correctly identify and control emotions, as brain cells are killed. Video games move gray matter from one part of the brain to another. Actual socializing time is reduced, hindering building nurturing relationships. Video games commonly train poor social behavior, instilling blaming, shaming, cyberbullying and foul language. Studies show video games are linked to memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Allah’s Book, The Qur’an, will not make you strong in video games. It will make you strong in life. Ustadh Michael encourages students to leave video gaming and to start by seeking assistance and talking with parents. Replace video games with quality time with family, outdoors and Qur'an. Qur'an will free you so you are in control of your life. Ustadh Michael concludes with two measures of guidance to keep believers on the straight path.

Nothing is perfect except Allah summarizes Ustadh Michael Wolfender, referencing An-Nahl (16 The Bee), the 14-page surah wherein Allah lists many of His Blessings (see ayat 78 – 81). For example, Ayah 8 advises His Favor of what animals have been provided to ride without which some areas could not be reached. Ayat 10 – 11, 65 and 67 discuss how Allah sends rain as water for drinking and for plants to grow which then makes food for cattle to graze. As Brother Michael phrases: “flavors in fruit, food and juice.” In Ayat 5 – 7 and 66, Allah illustrates how He has provided cows for warm, food and many other benefits. And the namesake of the surah, the bee, is addressed in ayat 68 and 69, including the healing power of honey. Brother Michael remarks on how in seeking pollen, bees will each travel the same route to designated flowers, such is the amazing detail Allah endows His Creation. Animals provide clothing, and at the time of revelation, means to create tents as mobile living.
With these examples, Ustadh Michael recounts how Allah articulates humans cannot count His Blessings. And after this, despite our failings, Allah declares He is Forgiving. While we cannot and do not thank Him enough, He continues to provide. Ayat 49 – 50 conclude with requiring prostration before Allah, explaining how everything in the universe acknowledges Allah's Omnipotence.
Every blessing comes from Allah so we should recognize this and be grateful. Most don't recognize the blessings of Allah. Those who do appreciate Allah and thank Him ensure they protect this by continually thanking Him. Brother Michael counsels the more you are thankful, the more Allah says He will make you thankful as He will provide more for you to be thankful for.
As An-Nahl nears its end, in Ayah 90, Allah warns to be fair and forbids to do what is wrong. Our job is to be honest, sincere and do our part with the capabilities Allah has showered us with. With this,appreciate what Allah provides and be content. As we learn in ayat 30 – 32 and 95 – 96 that the reward for the patient will be everlasting. The key to success is outlined in Ayah 97: Allah promises those who do good deeds and believe in Him will have a good life.

At the beginning of Surat Al-Azhab (33 The Combined Forces) Allah swt addresses the value of believing in His final messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In verse 21, saying: "Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often." And then affirming those who follow, from verse 23: " Among the believers are men who have proven true to what they pledged to Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their pledge ˹with their lives˺, others are waiting ˹their turn˺. They have never changed ˹their commitment˺ in the least."
Ustadh Michael Wolfender recites the beginning of this surah, referencing the final messenger ﷺ as an excellent example for us to follow as a role model, hoping to meet Allah, remembering Him a lot. The battle of Al Azhab was difficult for the believers fighting in Allah's cause at the time behind His prophet ﷺ.
This verse comes among others referencing hypocrites doubting faith in Allah's messenger ﷺ and even Him. So Allah sent revelation indicating that what His messenger ﷺ says is from Him, which affirms believers' faith because what Muhammad ﷺ says is truth.
Ustadh Michael shares a picture of the sunrise showing the last crescent moon of the month and discusses the phases of the moon. Allah talks about the sun and moon in His Book, the Qur'an. A poet remarked on seeing the final messenger ﷺ and how he is beautiful like the sun and the pleasure of looking at him is akin to appreciating the beauty of the moon lit in the night sky.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made everyone feel like he loved them, including prisoners of war. He ﷺ advised to make things easy, not hard. Give people good tidings and make them feel happy.

Learn three qualities to ensure Allah provides an immediate answer. Ustadh Michael Wolfender takes us through Surat Al-Ambya (21 The Prophets) where Allah details the stories of at least a dozen prophets and lessons we can learn from, including the commandments provided to Moses, Ibrahim’s destroying of idols, Noah’s ultimate dua, Job’s calling out to his Master, and the famous dua from Jonah trapped in a whale.
Of the prophets mentioned, each embodied three qualities warranting Allah’s immediate answer:
- They rushed to do good and bring good to other people. Their intent and actions were to do good to people wherever they would go.
- They always made dua to Allah; not only just calling out when in need. Their sincere hopes included meeting Allah.
- They remained humble.
After mentioning these prophets in Al-Ambya, Allah mentions Mary and Jesus as a sign for the entire universe. He then mentions Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a mercy for the entire universe.
After migrating to the city of Medina, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instilled brotherhood and peace with a constitution instituting rights including freedom of worship. Citizens would mutually defend the community. Peace and goodness were spread to make those around each other live in happiness, taking care of those who have less. Share food with all people. Worship, turn to Allah, make dua, especially at night. This is the way to success.
These measures help define how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a mercy to the entire universe, promoting the spread of Islam, as in the verse after Ayat ul Kursi (2:255) where Allah says there is no coercion in religion. Rather, the message of Islam is to be delivered with humility, peace and mercy as declared in Surat Al-Ambya. This is how Islam brings justice and fairness.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares learnings from Surat Al-Mu’minun on how amazing Allah is. Brother Michael advises how the surah opens with the first four ayat guaranteeing success to believers who follow what Allah ordains: care about prayer, do not waste time and share. Believers will be winners when they are serious about praying salah and care about prayer, use time productively and are charitable. Believers give what they like to others, understanding Allah is The Provider and He can give more.
The 23rd surah describes how Allah created man from clay and how humans form from embryos. From this, Allah fashions humans, who, if they physically injure themselves can have human body parts, like skin, repair itself. As further benefit, Allah sends down fresh water filling rivers and lakes, sustaining life that grows sustenance with all sorts of flavor and nutrition.
Allah sent messengers. People denied them, just as they deny Allah’s Favors. This is a fundamental mistake to not realize how amazing Allah is, while everyday it is evident the creation He has provided, including our human bodies, water and food.

Adilah from 3rd grade recites Surah Al-Kawthar, in which Allah records the name of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ everlasting. This surah was revealed in the early stages of prophethood when he ﷺ was enduring extremely difficult conditions, including being ostracized by his ﷺ community, his ﷺ handful of companions were helpless poor people who were also being persecuted and tyrannized. The Prophet ﷺ was grieving the death of his ﷺ two sons, while near relatives and his clan rebuked him ﷺ. In just one sentence, Allah provided the best news ever given anyone: his ﷺ opponents will be cut off from their roots.

Prayer is a conversation with our Creator. So we should understand the Qur’anic Arabic we recite. Study the Qur’an with the mental attitude of a seeker of truth. Recognize that the Lord of the Universe is the Source of All Knowledge. Begin the study of the Qur’an with this prayer to Allah for seeking His Guidance. Al-Fatihah is the prayer from Allah’s servant and the rest of the Qur’an is Allah’s answer.
4th grader Affan recites and shares the meaning of Surah Al-Fatihah. After parts of three surahs were revealed, Allah revealed Surah Al-Fatiha in its entirety. It is recited 17 times in five obligatory prayers. Allah Himself teaches this prayer to mankind as a favor to let us know the format of Prayer which is acceptable to Him. The best thing for a person is to pray for ‘guidance towards the Right Way.’

Ustadh Michael advises on how everyone impacted by the COVID-19 affects can use this time to become a better person with an attitude of gratitude, to become more righteous, improve character and use good speech. It is a time beckoning humans to turn to Allah, the Qur'an, honor His Prophet peace be upon him and do your best to become better despite pressure and difficulties. Do not give in to stress and worries. Allah is near. He is our Guardian and Caretaker.
Rely on Allah. He is Our Provider. Appreciate His Favors and know that Allah is in charge.
Brother Michael recites from the sixth surah Al-An'am, translated: “All praise is for Allah Who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light.” And from Surah Ali ‘Imran (3:185-186): “Every soul will taste death. And you will only receive your full reward on the Day of Judgment. Whoever is spared from the Fire and is admitted into Paradise will ˹indeed˺ triumph, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment. You ˹believers˺ will surely be tested in your wealth and yourselves, and you will certainly hear many hurtful words from those who were given the Scripture before you and ˹from˺ the polytheists. But if you are patient and mindful ˹of Allah˺—surely this is a resolve to aspire to.”
The reminder is that this life is a test and truce success is in the hereafter. What are the tests in this life? Of wealth and self. Be patient and be mindful of Allah by perservering in doing good, restraining yourself and being patient in the face of sorrow, defeat and hardship; bear hardship gracefully and be kind to others.
Brother Michael concludes with a story of companion of our Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him who was disobedient and his punishment was isolation. In that quarantine, the companion turned to Allah to become more righteous. We too should use this time to improve relationships, connect to the Qur'an and honor the sunnah of our prophet peace be upon him.
Ustadh Ilir Aliji assists in answering questions including: is this virus a blessing or curse? Brother Ilir advises Allah sends punishment to those deserving and the virus is a mercy for those who believe; for instance, believers earn the reward of a martyr. Believers have respite in times of duress, understanding this temporary life is a test from Allah and He has provided answers in His Book, the Qur’an. In Surah Al-Anbya (The Prophets 21:87), we learn the famous dua Prophet Yoonas sought from Allah while in the whale:
“And ˹remember˺ when the Man of the Whale stormed off ˹from his city˺ in a rage, thinking We would not restrain him. Then in the ˹veils of˺ darkness he cried out, “There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.”
Ustadh Michael Wolfender reminds this is the dua to ask of Allah in times of distress. Turn back to Allah and ask for His Forgiveness.
Ustadh Michael also reminds of the last two ayah of Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow 2:285-286):
“The Messenger ˹firmly˺ believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They ˹all˺ believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. ˹They proclaim,˺ “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. ˹We seek˺ Your forgiveness, our Lord! And to you ˹alone˺ is the final return.
“Allah does not require of any soul more than what it can afford. All good will be for its own benefit, and all evil will be to its own loss. ˹The believers pray,˺ “Our Lord! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! Do not place a burden on us like the one you placed on those before us. Our Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our ˹only˺ Guardian. So grant us victory over the disbelieving people.”
These two ayah were among three gifts provided when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ascended to Heaven, where Allah provided instructions for worship and that for whoever believes in Allah as One and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His final messenger, all of their minor sins will be forgiven.
Brother Michael emphasizes in ayat 285, how believers profess ‘we hear and we obey.’ This is turning back to Allah, indicating we’ve heard His Instruction and given the power of reason He has endowed us with, we decide to obey. Asking Our Master to forgive us is turning back to Allah. We need His Forgiveness as that is the ultimate assistance. Foremost, we need to be forgiven to earn eternal salvation, as the hereafter is most important.

After beginning the weekly reminder in Arabic for 45 seconds, Ustadh Michael Wolfender examines the compilation and revelation of the Qur’an and its instruction and correlation to building the initial strength for an Islamic community. The Qur’an begins with Surah Al-Fatihah, where we ask Allah to guide us to the straight path. This is followed by the beginning of such guidance with Surah Al-Baqarah, wherein a deviant community uses the ploy of asking questions to delay following instructions from God. This parable is used to contrast a community who is provided guidance and obeys. In Surah Al-Fil, Allah describes how He saved His House, the Ka’ba in Mecca, from an army of elephants. This was the same year Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was born.
In Surah Kafirun, Muslims are given the guidance to not compromise with those who do not believe accordingly. With this guidance and evidencing the purpose of his existence, Prophet Muhammed peace be upon him, upon returning to Mecca to free the Ka’ba of idols, did so with mercy for all, forsaking retribution for years of torture Muslims endured.
Brother Michael continues with the guidance in the longest chapter, Surah Al-Baqara, as it instructs on building a Muslim community of faith, fairness, justice and tolerance. Allah indicates the direction to turn to in prayer, known as the qibla, along with instructions to fast during the month of Ramadan, the same month the beginning of the Qur’an’s revelation occurred. Eid celebrations after the month of Ramadan celebrate the Qur’an’s revelation. Instructions from the Qur’an and worship during Ramadan help establish a strong community of Muslims. How? Fasting is a means to control yourself for Allah, to help instruct on how to control desires. Become a leader by being a disciplined follower. Success is to control yourself and turn to the Qur’an for guidance.

After praising Allah in Arabic for one minute and fifteen seconds, Ustadh Michael Wolfender reminds how we take our health for granted, until becoming sick. Islam, as a lifestyle, promotes hygiene, fending illness. This includes washing five times a day and before and after eating. Oral health is reflective of overall health. However, many still become ill. Illness can occur as a test from Allah to ensure believers do not become arrogant with Allah’s Pleasure and owning these blessings as a result of one’s own actions.When you do take all preventive hygienic measures, you may still become ill and a believer looks forward and reaches out to Allah for the best. Everything Allah decrees is good for the believer. Prophet Ibrahim, as a role model, recognized that upon getting ill, Allah is the Provider of Health. Brother Michael concludes with a metaphor to cleanse the germs in your body and heart creating obstacles and illnesses in your connection with Allah, referencing two ayah in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185 - 186): “Ramaḍân is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful. When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. After beginning his khutbah or the weekly reminder in Arabic for 45 seconds, Senior Student Zakariya Alkhawaldeh recites Surah Al-’Asr where Allah swears by time, indicating that humanity is in loss before ending the surah with the solutions towards ensuring success.
When an angel blows the soul into the growing embryo ensuring life, factors including that individual’s rizq or money and wealth, time on earth including date of birth and death as well as whether that person will live a happy or miserable life due to their actions are all determined and recorded.
Upon death, each individual faces questioning in the grave, including:
Who is your Lord?
Who is your messenger? Who did you follow?
What is your religion?
Seek knowledge and Allah will make your path easy. Seek knowledge about Allah by His Names and Attributes. Learn about His prophet by his character, manners and actions. Learn Islam, its purpose and reasonings to be able to share the message of salvation. Apply these learnings in life. Whoever Allah wishes, He will provide that person with understanding of His Religion. Calling people to Islam may not be easy and requires patience beyond exemplary character. The reward of paradise is certainly fitting.

The weekly Friday reminder or khutbah begins in Arabic for one minute before Ustadh Michael Wolfender translates to English means of character perfection. Brother Michael starts with four passages from the Qur’an describing man’s behavior and our fate based on actions.
Brother Michael begins with referencing from Surah Al-Fajr that blessings include tests from Allah. Al-Fajr (The Dawn 89: 15 - 20): “Now, whenever a human being is tested by their Lord through ˹His˺ generosity and blessings, they boast, “My Lord has ˹deservedly˺ honored me!” But when He tests them by limiting their provision, they protest, “My Lord has ˹undeservedly˺ humiliated me!” Absolutely not! In fact, you are not ˹even˺ gracious to the orphan, nor do you urge one another to feed the poor. And you devour ˹others’˺ inheritance greedily”
That is, man is quick to complain when evidently blessings are limited. Rather, among the elements of success are worshiping Allah, thanking Him and demonstrating this with good deeds.
In the first five ayah of Surah Al-’Adiyat, Allah describes how humans use horses to harm others. This, along with any measure of disloyalty to our Master, coupled with intense love of materialism is a path towards self-destruction. In particular, Brother Michael refers to: Al-'Adiyat (The Courser 100:6): “Surely humankind is ungrateful to their Lord” with disloyalty, arrogance and disobedience.”
Surah Al-’Asr references the easy formula humans dig themselves into - complaining when in loss, feeling special when blessed, harming others or not helping others when enjoying blessings from Allah. And Allah also provides the solution in Surah Al-’Asr: believe, do good deeds, encourage each other to truth and patience.
Al-’Asr (103 The Declining Day): “By the ˹passage of˺ time! Surely humanity is in ˹grave˺ loss, except those who have faith, do good, and urge each other to the truth, and urge each other to perseverance.”
Take ownership of your destiny. Allah has created a palace for everyone in Paradise. Importance in the eyes of Allah is your heart being connected to Him. We have been provided the answers to pass the test that is each of our lives. Brother Michael recites the beginning of Surah Al-Insan (The Man 76: 1 - 3): “Is there not a period of time when each human is nothing yet worth mentioning? ˹For˺ indeed, We ˹alone˺ created humans from a drop of mixed fluids, ˹in order˺ to test them, so We made them hear and see. We already showed them the Way, whether they ˹choose to˺ be grateful or ungrateful.”
The disbeliever is ungrateful, as Allah indicates He has provided the answers to passing the test of this life. Half of Surah Al-Insan describes paradise as the reward for winning. Paradise is where Allah serves the winners and He has promised this bounty for everyone. For example, in paradise, branches lower to provide fruit. Allah wishes to serve in Paradise all of the humans He has created.

After beginning in Arabic for one minute and fifteen seconds, Ustadh Michael Wolfender declares how Allah has always sent the same message, including with and before prophets Abraham and Moses. Nonetheless, most prefer this life though the hereafter is what will be everlasting.
Allah guarantees success to those who make a conscious effort to become a better person, remember Him and pray consistently. In Surah Al-A'la (87 The Most High ayat 14-15), Allah says: “Successful indeed are those who purify themselves, (those who) remember the Name of their Lord, and pray.” Do these things and you will get the best forever.
Steps for success include believing in Allah, doing good deeds and accepting Allah’s invitation to speak with Him five times a day.
In Surah Al-Mu'minun (23 The Believers 1-11), Allah promises: “Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer; those who avoid idle talk; those who pay alms-tax; those who guard their chastity except with their wives ... for then they are free from blame, but whoever seeks beyond that are the transgressors; ˹the believers are also˺ those who are true to their trusts and covenants; and those who are ˹properly˺ observant of their prayers. These are the ones who will be awarded Paradise as their own. They will be there forever.”
From these steps, we learn to act before it’s too late, so we are not among those on Judgment Day making excuses trying to talk with Allah when He will refuse. Take care not to waste time now, when on Judgment Day, it will be apparent our lives here will seem as if we stayed on earth but part of a day.
Brother Michael concludes with ayat 99 – 15 from Surah Al-Mu'minun (23 The Believers), which includes a key step for success: “As for those whose scale is heavy ˹with good deeds˺, it is they who will be successful.” We should each check our daily actions to include firm belief, worshipping our One Creator and performing good deeds.

After starting the first minute of his weekly khutbah or sermon before students at Good Tree Academy in Arabic, Ustadh Michael Wolfender declares Allah as Most Forgiving, referencing the beginning of Surah Mulk (The Sovereignty 67:1-2): “Blessed is the One in Whose Hands rests all authority. And He is Most Capable of everything. ˹He is the One˺ Who created life and death in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving.”
Life is a test to test us so we can do the best deeds. We don’t know the outcome of the test but we each determine the outcome based on our choices, decisions and actions. Allah will show us the result of these tests in this life and on the Day of Judgment.
In Surah Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds 51:56-57) Allah tells us the purpose of life: “I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me. I seek no provision from them, nor do I need them to feed Me.”
Our purpose here is to worship Allah; how many of us understand our purpose? Particularly by checking in with Him five times a day in prayer?
In Surah Al-Ahqaf (The Wind-Curved Sandhills 46:33), Allah provides a description of how it is not hard for Him to create: “Do they not realize that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth and did not tire in creating them, is able to give life to the dead? Yes ˹indeed˺! He is certainly Most Capable of everything.”
Contrast this to the challenges humans face in creating: rockets which fail to reach beyond the atmosphere, airplanes which fall from the sky, bridges which tumble with travelers trying to cross. Allah doesn’t need our worship. We make things to serve us. Notwithstanding, Allah is our Provider; He is serving us. We actually benefit ourselves in worshiping Allah, as He states in Surah Fatir (Originator 35: 15-16): “O humanity! It is you who stand in need of Allah, but Allah ˹alone˺ is the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy. If He willed, He could eliminate you and produce a new creation.”
We are slaves to Allah and Allah is our Master who gives us everything. This life is a test and we can use natural disasters as an example of how Allah keeps everything in control; He is the Force of Stability so oceans are not constantly in tsunami forces, volcanoes are not continually erupting wreaking havoc and the earth isn’t shaking constantly in violent earthquakes. These forces are tamed by Allah and not left to run wild, showing the value of struggle contained and the value of struggle endured with a foundation of the power of forgiveness. Brother Michael references the beginning of Surah Mulk (The Sovereignty 67:1-2) again: Blessed is the One in Whose Hands rests all authority. And He is Most Capable of everything. ˹He is the One˺ Who created life and death in order to test which of you is best in deeds. And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving.”
Do the best deeds and be forgiving. Brother Michael offers a personal example of why Allah provides tests and how realizing this helped him quell frustration and anger. Understanding our relationship with Allah recognizes that we are slaves to Him for our own benefit. This realization makes life easygoing and encourages being forgiving to others. Material things don’t provide happiness. One’s relationship with Allah and understanding our true purpose here equals the true meaning of happiness. This feeling guides us to our Creator.

The Qur’an as a book of guidance requires training and study to understand. Ustadh Michael Wolfender provides lessons from Surah Al-Waqi’ah (56 The Inevitable) with context to help understand and be guided by Allah’s Words.
Allah provides humanity the power of reason. Arrogance is failing to recognize this or rejecting it in favor of relying on anything other than Allah. Scientists, in their zeal and excitement of discovery, have at times rejected God. Time and reason, however, have shown the truth of recognizing and bringing God clearly into the equation of discovery, science and creation.
Surah Al-Waqi’ah begins referencing the Day of Judgment. Science correlates this with the trajectory of the sun inevitably crashing into another solar system. As such, science verifies the temporary nature of this world. Science also has discovered the fact that Yellowstone, the famous national park, is sitting on an eventual eruption, which is overdue. Muslims are not overly concerned about such calamities, given the confidence Allah provides believers. Among the series of events prior to the Day of Judgment, Brother Michael explains, is that believers will have their souls removed before the melee of endtimes.
Verses 1 - 14 of Surah Al-Waqi’ah describe three categories of people on the Day of Judgment: those who will have ease, those who are believers and righteous and those who have earned Allah’s Displeasure. This last category sadly partakes in excess, extravagance, insists and persists with sins, questioning the Day of Judgment.
In verses 57 - 74, Allah reminds of His Design, illustrating how His Creation clearly provides proper order, with examples of seeds growing and wood provided for fire. Science corroborates this with processes such as photosynthesis and heat energy created from fires in combustion.
In verses 77 - 82, Allah attests to the Guidance in His Book and asks what are you doing with your life? We can choose which of the three categories we’ll fall into on the Day of Judgment. Brother Michael explains the surah concludes that winners are those who are righteous, care for others, and strive to assist others. Allah says these will be few; and it is up to each of us, given the only creatures endowed with reason, to seek His Guidance and how we chart the course of our eternal destination.

After the first thirty seconds in Arabic, Ustadh Michael Wolfender provides a translation in English praising our Master, the Creator of the Universe. In tough times, we look for answers, for peace. Often without such solutions in sight. These worldly tests can help us achieve our place in paradise, based on our response. It is exactly these circumstances, Brother Michael explains, that brought Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the best news ever - that his ﷺ enemies would be cut off and he ﷺ would receive a gift to help quench believers’ thirst on the Day of Judgment.
In Surah Al-Kawthar, Allah declares Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the final messenger for all mankind. And we learn the benefits believers receive when accepting this. On Fridays especially, send salaam and peace on our prophet ﷺ. Those who do, earn ten times the benefit. Angels deliver these messages directly to his ﷺ grave.
To help explain this, Brother Michael uses modern inventions of computers, DNA testing and lie detectors - and how they illustrate actions described more than 1400 years ago during the Qur’an’s revelation, such as being able to see your eternal destination as you await the Day of Judgment.

Do you find it difficult to begin finding and counting the blessings we enjoy, including the gift of prayer Allah has provided? Ustadh Michael Wolfender presents several considerations, including an analogy of the power Allah presents in traffic and intersections to illustrate the Guidance He provides and His Protection. Allah is full of kindness to those who are devout to Him. He prevents harm. Being mindful of Allah, eager to please and avoiding disappointing Him are ways to develop a relationship with God.
In Ayah 207 of Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah refers to people who dedicate their lives seeking His Pleasure. And in the next verse, there is guidance on how to do this: Enter into Islam wholeheartedly. As the surah continues, Allah references the innumerable clear signs He provides of His Existence.
Brother Michael provides the example of pulsar stars recently discovered as making a knocking sound in the universe. More than 1400 years ago when Allah revealed the Qur’an, He explained exactly this in Surah Tariq. Further, Brother Michael explains how the Big Bang theory is also described in the Qur’an hundreds of years before it was articulated by scientists. All inventions are simply understanding how Allah made things.
The clear path to answering doubt is by turning to Allah, His Book and the guidance of how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lived and those traditions recorded known as hadith.

As a religion upholding social justice and peace, Ustadh Michael Wolfender looks through Islam's history and guidance in Islam to address how Muslims and Islam upholds and even rooted the values in the U.S. Constitution.
The best Muslims are those adhering to taqwa, i.e. being mindful of Allah and understanding that He is All-Knowing and The Provider of Success. Those upholding taqwa do so with honor and dignity. It was this character trait which earned early Muslims positions of responsibility and this was a very different approach than the practice at the time, which relied on heritage and tribal relations (not dissimilar from modern social class distinctions).
This early focus in Islam on social justice resulted in a faction being sent to seek protection with a Christian king in Africa. It also seeded constitutional values based on agreements struck with people of other faiths to uphold mutual rights. Unlike growth of other empires, the Muslim empire grew without a large army in comparison. As an example, Jews and Muslims conquested Spain together. The majority living in the Muslim empire initially were not Muslims, but the numbers grew as those in the region accepted the religion over time. Origins of the U.S. Constitution emanate from European visits to the Ottoman Empire where human rights were a primary focus. This heritage draws towards today, providing purpose to be proud Muslims and proud Americans.

A true Muslim submits willfully to Allah with love and knowledge as, in Islam, there is no coercion in religion. This is how a believer achieves a full Islam to enjoy. Ustadh Michael Wolfender presents the case of Black Friday and the stress capitalism induces in seeking the 'best deal.' Capitalism's zero sum game promotes winners over losers whereas Islam teaches sharing and wanting for others what we wish for ourselves, i.e. not to win over others in order to get the best deal. Thanksgiving is the opposite of Black Friday and does promote the perspective of Islam, which has the cure to stress and worries.
Continuing to chase this world and what is worldly will reap misery. In Surah Kahf, we learn everything on earth is a beautification. This is all a test to see who will be the most righteous, as all that is worldly will go away.
We cannot control stressful circumstances, but we can control our emotions. Islam teaches a perspective of gratitude, remembering Allah's blessings, believing in Him, His Decree and Wisdom, and being patient.
The Qur'an is full of cure for stress, such as declaring the perfection of Allah. Be grateful: praise and thank Allah. This relieves stress. Prostrate before Allah.
Surah Nahl contains another reminder that whoever performs good deeds and has faith, Allah guarantees a happy life. This results in contentment.
Allah has preserved the Qur'an in its originally revealed language. As a result, we have a means, among others, to understand the right perspective on life and ways and cures to de-stress. The mindset believers learn from the Qur'an counters many values inherent in capitalism and Black Friday, such as FOMO (fear of missing out).

You've heard the statement: Don't blindly follow. In the Qur'an, Allah articulates humans as being created the only creatures with reason and that we should use that reason to seek the truth and believe in it. 90 seconds after the Arabic introduction, Ustadh Michael Wolfender describes in English how Allah, over time, sent prophets with the same message: believe in One God. Today, there are Christians, believing in Jesus' original, true message, who support Muslims' belief in monotheism.
Ustadh Michael describes how, after Jesus, people changed the religion and the message he delivered. Indeed, Jesus completed the message delivered to the children of Israel. He declared that after him a final messenger would arrive for all of mankind and to follow Moses' message. Why? Because God has sent the same message for all mankind: worship One who is our Creator.
The superpower in Jesus' time was the Roman Empire, who worshiped idols such as Venus, Neptune, Jupiter and so on. These people added to the religion Jesus brought, including to worship him as God's son. 300 years after him, they made Christianity the state religion with these added beliefs; though, in the Bible, Jesus is recorded saying to 'worship your Lord, He is One.'
To this day, there are Christians who don't agree with perversions to the original Christian message. Brother Michael includes the story of his relatives, as Christians and their beliefs, along with the stories of two early believers in Islam and three duas which helped, in the early days of Islam, to uphold and spread Allah's message.

In Surah 92 Al-Layl (The Night), Allah swears by the day and night as opposites, just as life can be divided between those who give and those who don’t. The first category of people are those who give, are mindful of Allah and the consequences of actions, believing, following and adopting the truth when seen. For this, Allah says he will ease such a believer to ease, provide success and make it easy to achieve. Allah guarantees this.
The second category of people are those who are selfish, refuse to give and thinks for themselves. Relying on themselves, when truth is presented, the response is: ‘I have a better way,’ denying the best and preferring to handle matters of their own accord. To this, Allah says He will make it easy for such to fail, fall on hardship and face failures.
Wealth and materialism carry no benefit beyond this world and can pave a path to doom, while a sharing heart gives to others, thinking of their benefit. A true believer loves for another what s/he loves for him or herself, dedicating choices to ensure they please Allah.
Allah says to follow His Way to earn success, as His plan is to make His servants happy. In searching for a leader, the simple answer is to follow Allah and His Messenger ﷺ
To earn eternal happiness, as a believer, you will face tests. The answer is to put trust in Allah by turning to Him. Asking of Allah, worshipping Him and making dua (asking of Him) is pleasing to Him.
As an example, Allah relays the story of the teenagers of the cave and the test they faced in Surah Kahf (The Cave) and how they turned to Allah, knowing that confidence in following Allah is the right way. Be bold and strong in knowing this is the right way. These teenagers worshipped Allah as One while those around them worshipped idols. They were called to their king’s court and required to profess that they would worship idols as the rest of their community did. But this went against their faith. So they made dua to Allah and Allah says ‘we made them firm, strong and not scared’ because they believed in the truth. But they faced the test to worship idols or be sentenced to death. The teens professed faith in Allah as One, the Master of the Universe and that they would never worship any other. Their boldness then also spurred them to prompt those making them do this to bring the idols they worshipped forth and profess themselves why they should be worshipped.. Of course, inatimate objects could not.
The teens fled. Allah provided miracles as assistance and recompense. The correlation for us is the stronger we hold to Allah when tested, the stronger His Help will be for the believer.
We would be lost without the Guidance from Allah. We each have the opportunity to demonstrate truth to humanity and strength in belief. Allah provided the teenagers of the cave the miracle of sleep for 300 years and a dog to protect them.
Ask Allah to make you strong. Turn to the Qur’an and sunnah for guidance. This relieves worry and hardship, replacing it with contentment. The test won’t be removed, but the unnecessary concerns will be.
Allah, we are at your service. Your Decree and Judgment is Fair to us. We ask Allah to make His Qur’an a means for us to be happy and content, to be a Light in our heart.

Stress is inherent in current society. Ustadh Michael Wolfender relates ‘pills are not the solution,’ though 1 in 6 Americans uses antidepressant medication. Qur’an has antidotes for stress. In Surah Al-Hijr, Allah says those who didn’t accept His message will wish they did. We are instructed to serve Allah until we reach death. Praising and declaring the perfection of Allah is a means of handling stress. And the reward for enduring this life is illustrated in Surah Fatir (translated as Originator) verses 33 - 35. Until we earn that reward, we can alleviate stress by reciting the last three surahs. Say this at night three times, blow on your hands and wipe them over your body.
When a person (leaving their home) says: بسم الله توكلت على الله ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله “In the name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, and there is no opportunity and no power except with Allah,” the Angels reply: ‘You have been protected, you have been sufficed, you have been guided.’
In Surah An-Nahl (translated as The Bee) verse 97, we learn by performing good deeds and keeping faith, Allah will make sure such a believer has a happy life.
Finally, whoever feels some sort of stress and says the following dua, Allah will remove it and turn it into happiness:
Oh Allah, I am Your slave, the son of Your slave, my forelock is at Your hand, Your decision is a done deal for me, Your decree is fair to me. I asked You by all Your names, that You have given Yourself, that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have taught any of Your creation, or that You have kept secret with You in Your knowledge of the Unseen, that You make the Qur'an the spring (joy) of my heart, the light of my chest, the relief of my sadness, and the removal of my worries.

Most of our duas fall into one of two categories: seeking to remove a problem and future benefit. It’s important for believers to always remember and call upon Allah, and it is also natural and appropropriate when one is bearing an increase in problems, to increase worship and dua. Duas are accepted and responded to immediately, over the course of your life or in the hereafter. So when a believer doesn’t see an immediate acceptance, this is not a reflection of Allah’s immediate view of you and His Happiness with His believer.
Allah provides the examples of His prophets for believers to learn from. Noah (as) preached for 950 years. And we get frustrated often in seconds or minutes!
Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him continued to offer dua on behalf of his relatives who did not accept Islam. Allah reminds us those we pray for do not automatically receive guidance because of duas made for this purpose.
Jacob (as) had 12 sons and he lost his youngest, Joseph, as a child; he made dua and cried over losing his son. So much so that he lost his eyesight. After many years, Jacob was reunited with his son.
Moses’ mother put him in a basket and threw him in the river Nile. Upon consideration, we’ll understand there is nothing on this earth like a mother’s love for her child. Moses’ mother made dua for her son. And he was returned to her within hours.
The reason we make dua is we expect a return. But we must first understand that the word ‘dua’ means to call, invite and cry out. Duas do include requests and demands. They are from a slave turning to his Master, to beg of Allah of Him and His Bounty. That you ask Allah is most important and engage in conversation with Him.
Joseph (as) was falsely accused and jailed. However, if he had never made it to Egypt, he never would have been brought before the king and earned a position in his court, leading to reunion with his family.
Pain is provided for a reason: to learn, be patient and ask of our Master, balanced by thanking Him for the blessing He continually showers us with.

Did you know prayer was provided as a gift from God?
Listen to how the original command to pray 50 times a day was reduced to 5, but still retains the reward of 50. Washing before prayer cleanses the worshipper of sins. Prayer itself is an expiation. Learn about the purpose in actions during worship and praying in a private conversation with Allah, as He responds to each verse in the opening chapter of the Holy Qur’an. In Surah Fatihah, worshippers ask Allah to ensure they stay on the straight path, which can be referred to as: truth, Islam, guidance from Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and the Qur’an itself.
Allah answers this prayer in the opening chapter with the beginning of the following chapter, indicating the Qur’an is the guidance worshippers are seeking. It is provided for believers to cling to, recite and act on its contents.
Prayer includes prostrating before Allah, which brings the believer closest to His Creator. Upon completing worship, let it linger in remembering Allah until the next opportunity to prostrate. Use the time in between prayers to make dua in asking Allah, as He loves for believers to ask of Him.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender focuses on growing the right relationship with Allah. The word ‘slave’ typically has a negative connotation. Yet, believers are happy to be slaves to the right Master.
Our service doesn’t bring Allah any benefit. Yet, we are benefiting ourselves by serving Him. No other slave or master relationship is the same. A master does and should take care of his servants. Allah is close, tolerant and He loves us. He has built a home for each of us in paradise. It’s simply up to us to choose His path.
Brother Michael explains, "The ayah of the purpose of creation” where Allah says, “I didn't create jinns and humans except for one purpose: that they serve and worship Me."
In Surah Al-Ahqaf (46 The Wind-Curved Sandhills) ayah 33, Allah reminds He can bring life back to the dead.
Compare the process humans use to create. We make things due to need.
It is not tasking for Allah to create, as He did with the universe and everything in it. And He doesn’t need anything from His creation.
Our purpose is to worship Allah. We serve Allah; we follow His instructions. We benefit ourselves by serving Allah. For a believer, being a slave to Allah is the highest level of happiness.

Admit it - you’ve compared what you have to what someone else has, whether as a child or an adult. That’s human nature. Ustadh Michael Wolfender explains why Allah distributes wealth, education, knowledge, talent, skill and even family ties evenly, though we may often be envious or not understand a perceived imbalance.
Brother Michael is referring to Ayah 31 of Surah Az-Zukhruf (43 The Ornaments of Gold) where we learn the mercy of Allah is better. He distributes blessings accordingly and it is best to focus on what we do have.
Brother Michael says, "If you've been going to the mosque, to the masjid during the month of Ramadan, there's a lot of fundraising going on. Sometimes you might be wishing that you could be raising your hand to give a lot of money like other people do. But Allah knows your intention. Allah knows what's inside the heart. And the person who has two dollars and gives one dollar has given fifty percent. The person who has two thousand dollars and gives twenty has given a lower portion. Allah knows the intention. Allah accepts the intention."
Do the best with what you have instead of being selfish by comparing yourself to others or making fun of those who have less.
Allah could have made everyone rich; the differences Allah provides us is intended for us to better appreciate.

As movie-goers, we’re used to special effects. So Brother Michael describes, "Hollywood has got nothing on Allah. SubhanAllah. Allah is going to take the universe and fold it up until there's not a sound, there's nothing left, kind of like how the universe was before the big bang. And He's going to say 'To whom belongs the kingdom now? Whose is the kingdom today?'”

In the first two ayah of Surah Saba (34 Sheba), Brother Michael explains Allah’s commands and mercy come down from the sky and angels carry our deeds up, similar to rain falling from the sky as a mercy quenching plants and water evaporating and returning to clouds.
Brother Michael says, "Every day, every second, as we speak, angels are moving back and forth. Allah is sending angels to do what He told them and to implement His command. And, every second that we speak, there's angels recording everything that's happening. And there's angels making dua to Allah for the believers. All of this is happening coming up and down from the sky. So Allah's command comes down from the sky through the angels, and the deeds of the people go up to the sky through the angels."

In ayah 56 - 60 of Surah Al-’Ankabut (29 The Spider) Allah commands to only worship Him. Every soul will taste death and we will all return to Allah.
We all face ups and downs in life. Allah is indeed taking care of us. Paradise is the reward for those who are patient and rely on Allah.
In ayah 60, Allah illustrates that animals look as if they have nothing. Everyday they go out and they are provided for by Allah. We are the same. Allah knows our condition. He hears us and provides.
We must be patient, if things don’t go according to our plan. Be thankful. Allah has His plan for each of us.
Brother Michael explains, "We want things for this life and we don't plan much for the hereafter. Sometimes Allah gives us what we need for this life less than what we aspired to or wanted. And yet, that's because He wanted us to, He wants us to get more from the hereafter."

Allah’s guidance is a light. Anyone who is guided receives that direction from Allah. The Qur’an is His guidance and a source of light. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shares what happens when these lights of guidance from Allah and the Qur’an meet.
Brother Michael explains, "Becoming a Muslim was an enjoyment for me. But the real light came, that feeling of light, that 'okay, I'm doing the right thing' only comes when you go to the Qur'an. That's where the light really comes.”
Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth, both physically and in guidance. Faith is like a light, a shining star in your heart enclosed in your chest. Qur’an is the light from Allah, the guidance of Allah. Everyone has this light and it becomes light upon light when connected with the Qur’an. Allah guides whomever He chooses. It is upon us to seek this guidance. This light is available for everyone.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender told us in Episode 1 how the Qur’an is a book of guidance for one who seeks to find answers. In this episode on the 17th juz, Ustadh Michael gives us a specific example with the realm of science. The first premise refutes the idea that religion is antagonistic to science.
Five minutes in, Ustadh Michael explains Allah clearly addressing what we call the Big Bang theory today. In the 21st surah, Al-Anbya (The Prophets) and ayah 30 Allah describes the heavens and the earth used to be one entity and then ‘We separated them’ followed by ‘from water, We made every living thing.’
As Brother Michael explains, "Religion and science are meant to go together. Islam brought the whole world out of darkness into light in the golden ages of Islam and that's because Islam makes scientific research as a virtuous act. A virtuous endeavour. You get rewarded for trying to find out about the creation of Allah."
Allah is the creator of the universe and Allah is the author of the Qur’an so they are aligned. The Qur’an is not a book of science. Qur’an is a book of guidance on how to find knowledge. Scientific discovery requires testing. The more we find in science, the more we need to reference the Qur’an.

Allah mentions one of His prophets more than any other in His Book of Guidance and teaches us many dua at the tongue of this prophet. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shows how achieving perfection comes through obedience aligned with dua in Surah 20 Taha.
See how asking of Allah can also be seeking to please His direction. As Brother Michael says, "Throughout the Qur'an, what we see from Musa is that he makes dua and he does his best. He makes dua and he does his best. He's trying to please Allah. Nothing else. Everything he does is about good deeds and pleasing Allah. And then, he keeps talking to Allah, like a student who keeps coming to the teacher. 'Did I do well? Did I do well? Help me out on this. Help me out on this!' He wants to please the teacher and he keeps talking to the teacher to see how he did."

Ustadh Michael Wolfender focuses on one of the lessons Allah teaches us in Surah Al-Kahf, the 18th chapter in the Holy Qur’an - that poverty and wealth come from Allah.
Do you face the tests Ustadh Michael describes: comparing yourself with others, equating success with materialism, a false confidence of stability without attribution to Allah or even a misguided sense of your ultimate destination because of your current circumstances?
This is why we are encouraged to read Surah Al-Kahf, or part of it, every Friday. Of the lessons it contains, Brother Michael shares one of a conversation between two people, one wealthy and one poor. Allah takes two ayah to describe the person’s wealth, taking credit for all of what the wealthy person has.
However, the wealthy person compares himself with his neighbor. He is hurtful to his neighbor by complimenting his own wealth over his neighbor’s. Essentially, he is confusing success with materialism and comparing himself with others.
Second, he takes for granted the security Allah has provided, forgetting the forthcoming Day of Judgment.
Finally, he mistakes Allah’s blessings, thinking Allah is happy with him, based on his comfort and security. And assumes this will also ensure a place in paradise for him in the Hereafter.
Wealth and poverty are both are a test from Allah. Forgetting that everything comes from Allah is equivalent to placing the importance of wealth before Allah as our primary purpose for being here on earth: to worship Him.

Being grateful makes you positive. Allah helps believers prompt this connection, with His blessings which He recounts in Surah An-Nahl. Hear just one example Ustadh Michael Wolfender explains and check if you had considered just this one blessing.

Today’s Qur’an Connection carries a special significance because Ustadh Michael Wolfender, department head at Good Tree Academy, shares the parable of the good tree as Allah describes how to grow long lasting goodness.
Are you planting roots by studying Allah’s words in the Qur’an and taking action with good deeds to reach high into the sky like the branches of a good tree? Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but takes lots of care and consistent action, such as connecting often with the Qur’an.
Allah uses the parable of a good tree to help us understand the value of connecting with the Qur’an. Ustadh Michael, reviewing ayat 24 - 25, details the story of roots, branches and bearing fruit to grow your deen. He explains, “A good word is like a good tree, deeply rooted and its branches grow to the sky.” What is a good word? Look at the words of the Qur’an.
This proverbial tree gives fruit year-round. Good words have a long-lasting impact.
The original companions who embraced Islam are not here today to see throngs of Muslims gathering around the world in houses of worship, bearing the fruit of their faithful efforts.
Long lasting impact only comes with care of good words, continuously using the Qur’an’s guidance and sharing faith with our character as examples.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender tells us in Surah Hud Allah uses stories of the examples of His prophets to demonstrate sincerity, humility and patience. Our goal is to emulate these prophets’ examples, but many people don’t and reject this sincere message. Use fasting to make yourself among those who aren’t stubborn and refuse to listen to the proof from Allah.
The first ayah of the eleventh surah explains the relevance of the parts of the prophets stories relayed in the Qur’an. The second ayah continues indicating the prophets all provided the same message and brought good news. These messengers relayed the message of Allah only for Allah. They are patient. But people are stubborn, replying ‘We don’t understand. You haven’t given us proof.’ This response carries through throughout time. Believers are always few. Among Muslims, few fast. Fast to grow sincerity, humility, and patience.
May Allah give us blessings through His Wise Qur’an.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender details the character believers should strive for – understanding that Allah has provided clear proofs, looking for the balance and wisdom in Allah’s creation, and always seeking to learn more. This way of building character provides purpose and perspective against those simply seeking enjoyment in this world, neglecting Allah’s signs.
The tenth surah is named after Prophet Yunus, though his story is not described in detail. Rather, Allah speaks about His Signs. Like with many surahs, the opening verse emphasizes this is the Qur’an from Allah.
Brother Michael details four ways Allah provides proof the Qur’an is His Words:
- Descriptions of the hereafter: heaven and hell
- Describes our universe with wisdom and balance; the preciseness and accuracy attributes His creation
- Character of prophets
- Stories of destroyed civilizations who didn’t obey
Which bring us to a reference of this surah’s name: Prophet Yunus’ community, upon his return, did believe and flourish.
Ayat 5 - 7 discuss these types of people:
- Those who take Allah’s Words and accept them as clear proofs; they care to understand more
- Those who care what will happen next, after this world
- Those who are short sighted, being happy with just this world and don’t consider the next (YOLO much?)
Power is for believers. See if paradise is for party animals.

Would you like some direct encouragement from Allah? Ustadh Michael Wolfender relates ayat from Surah Al-Anfal on the dividends of standing firm and remembering Allah. Allah’s plan is the best. He is with the patient.
The eighth surah uses the Battle of Badr and its real life lessons for our learning backdrop. In ayah 42, Allah relates how the Muslims planned to intercept a trade caravan but it went another route. Instead, their destiny was to fight an army assembled of their Meccan foes. Allah says He planned this meeting to occur in the manner He designed. Further, He made each army look smaller to the other. The lesson here: looks may be deceiving.
Ayah 49 quotes some in the Meccan army who derided the Muslims. Allah says He has His plan: whoever trusts Allah, Allah has His Authority and He is Wise. When you meet an opponent, stand firm and remember Allah. Obey Allah and do not have dissension among each other. Allah is with the patient. Keep connecting with Allah. We plan, Allah plans and Allah’s is the best plan.

A commanding character is built through mercy for imperfections. Ustadh Michael Wolfender completes his look at the seventh surah and how forgiving weaknesses and promoting the strengths of those around you paves your path to Paradise.
Do you wish for the Final Day to be your Day of Mercy from Allah? Then He expects you to demonstrate that every day. If you wish for Allah to shower His mercy, He expects you to start the positive chain reaction.
Look for the good in people, their manners and their speech. This helps to remove and overlook shortcomings. Don’t ask others to do things which may not be easy for them. Encourage excellence in speech and behavior through modeling. Focus on the positive. Build a mindset focused on the Mercy of Allah and not His Punishment.

In Surah Al-A’raf, Allah recounts the original story of forgiveness, and from this we learn a powerful dua Ustadh Michael Wolfender encourages us all to use in calling out to our Master.
The first step towards gratitude is learning to admit wrong. See how that’s the right thing to do in today’s Qur’an Connection. The seventh surah in the Holy Qur’an contains the story of the devil (Ibliss) and Adam. Ibliss, after refusing Allah’s command, testified to the efforts he will consistently demonstrate in leading humans astray, attesting most humans will not be grateful.
The tactics he used with Adam and Hawa are consistent. He made Adam raise doubts and suspicions about not going near the tree and presented himself as a trusted advisor. Ultimately, his deceit was successful. Adam and Hawa eat from the tree and immediately regret their disobedience and the consequences.
Adam blames himself. Allah taught our forefather, the first human, this dua Brother Michael recites seeking forgiveness based on sinning and accepting accountability, blaming none others. The first step towards gratitude is learning that admitting wrong is the right thing to do.

Allah is our Master and Muslims, as believers, must love Allah and be mindful of Him as his obedient slaves. For this, Allah promises His Endless Mercy. Ustadh Michael Wolfender shows us the evidence from Surah Al-An’am, the sixth surah in The Holy Qur’an, where Allah indicates the mandate He has placed on Himself that He will be merciful.
A clear message from this surah: you should believe in Allah. Allah gives us time to find Him and believe in Him. His Mercy will end if you choose not to believe in Him. The ones who don’t believe are lost. Again in Ayah 54, Allah mandates His Mercy for the believers.

Ustadh Michael Wolfender turns to Surah Al-Ma’ida to show how keeping clean leads to pure faith. Keeping clean grows your faith. Washing purifies sins, character and connections.
This surah has a message of the value of keeping clean, including instructions for wudu or ablution (washing before prayer). As Brother Michael says, purifying yourself prepares you for Allah to fulfill His Blessing on you so we may be grateful.
Ayat 7 - 8 discuss physically purifying the body expiates sins. This then allows inner purity, helping initiate commitment for believers to be firm for Allah and a testimony to the justice of Islam. Be fair in all of your actions.
So this four-step process consists of: 1. Purify 2. Feel good from cleanliness 3. Make internal commitment 4. Be mindful of how you behave with others
All of these actions contribute towards the second level of fasting which includes being mindful of speech and behavior.

The best leaders are the best followers. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the best follower of Allah and we should follow him.
In Ayah 78, Allah refers to the battle of Uhud as the Muslims established community in Medina. This foundation would set the stage for the growth and spread of Islam across civilizations.
Hypocrites left the battle of Uhud leaving Muslims outnumbered. These hypocrites then stated had Muslims come with them, they would have avoided disaster and death.
To this, Allah replies death will come to you regardless of where you hide and in Ayah 82: whoever obeys His messenger ﷺ is obeying Allah.
As Brother Michael says, "Put your reliance upon Allah. Trust in Allah. And Allah is enough. You can trust Him. He's The One Whose Authority commands respect. Just rely upon Allah. "
Most people don’t stop and think about the Qur’an, which has enough evidence to prove it is the word of Allah. Use the Qur’an to be convinced. Followers obey Allah 100 percent.

We’re now on the 4th juz and Surah Ali ‘Imran (Family of Imran) which teaches keeping the end goal in mind. This surah was revealed after the battle of Uhud, where Muslims faced hardship when soldiers did not obey, resulting in 70 from their army killed. Brother Michael refers to Ayat 132 - 136 when Allah recognized the Muslims’ hardship and sadness. The lesson: obey Allah and His Messenger peace be upon him and Allah will shower His Mercy on you. Rush towards forgiveness from your Master and Paradise is as wide as the universe. Don’t let the ups and downs of daily routines bog you down. Focus on earning Allah’s forgiveness and earning Paradise. Spend on others, swallow anger and overlook mistakes. Forgive others and let go of anger. Ask Allah for forgiveness when you make a mistake and rush for Paradise, focusing on the Hereafter. For this, Allah offers descriptions of rivers flowing for eternal enjoyment.

Juz 3’s highlight is Surah 2 Ayah 260 where Brother Michael focuses on the question: How does Allah bring life back to the dead? This is a common obstacle to belief for many.
Belief is a foundation. Qur’an comes from Allah. And the Qur’an provides proofs of Allah throughout. Firm belief comes from clear proof.
Ayah 260 provides a method to seek certainty, which we see in Allah providing Prophet Ibrahim a personal miracle. Among His Qualities, believers defer to Allah’s Command, Authority, Intellect and Perfection.

In just over six minutes, Ustadh Michael covers instructions Allah provides in Surah Al-Baqarah which will bring believers the ultimate reward.
The second juz or part of the Holy Qur'an focuses on success. We receive instructions from Allah on actions for believers such as the pilgrimage (haj) and fasting during Ramadan.
In Ayah 156, Allah guides believers to be patient because He will test with trials and tribulations. A solution is to focus on the Hereafter when we will return to Him.
In Ayah 200, during instructions on Haj, we are provided a very profound and well-known seeking of blessing or dua: "Allah, give us the best in this world and the best of the Hereafter." Ayah 207 provides a solution on changing your focus to please Allah. He wants us to follow Him. Then, as Brother Michael relates, in Ayah 214, Allah asks whether believers think it will be easy to talk into Paradise. There will be difficulties and Allah is here to help us.
During the verse on instructions for marriage, we receive guidance for happiness in the home. Who you marry bears on your fate in the Hereafter. And we conclude with Ayah 238 on protecting prayer because this is our connection to Allah.

Born in France, Ustadh Michael Wolfender accepted Islam in 2009 after earning his master's degree in engineering the previous year. In 2013, Brother Michael graduated at the top of his class from Bayyinah Dream, a full-year Arabic intensive program. Since then, he has been teaching at Good Tree Academy in north Texas, leading Arabic curriculum development as Hifz Department lead.
In this episode, Brother Michael recounts his first reading the Qur'an when he misunderstood a major point and was disappointed. He shares how he learned the Qur'an is a book of guidance on how to find answers. "Allah doesn't spoonfeed us," he says, sharing how Allah tells us "This is the book that has guidance" for those who have the right intentions.

In Ayah 30 of the second surah or chapter, we begin to understand the story of Allah guiding our first father and how Allah guides us to understand the creation of mankind through His teaching Adam with the guidance He provides. Adam, like all of his descendants, has the ability to learn. We are to balance acquired knowledge and revealed knowledge from Allah. Those who follow Allah's guidance will not grieve and will achieve worldly and eternal success.
Ayah 252 of Al-Baqarah (The Cow) underscores Allah is the source of all knowledge. And in Ayah 282, we learn connecting to Allah, being mindful of Him and He will teach us. We can learn from many sources, including teachers and books, but some knowledge we will only attain from Allah in the guidance He provides.
