Lo's Motown Grammy performance in relation to theories of cultural appropriation, Arianna Grande's performance of race in relation to the notion of black fishing, and also use our critical race theory skills to unpack notions of Whiteness, how essentialism complicates these critiques, and also how it all connects to capitalism. In this episode we talk about the "crazy women" narratives perpetuated by the news media in the 1990s (Lorena Bobbit, Marsha Clark, Tonya Harding, Monica Lewinsky, Amy Fisher, etc.). Inspired by the new Lorena documentary by Jordan Peele and accompanying press, we dig into the whitewashing of Lorena Bobbit, nostalgia of 90s culture, the narrative redemption of these women, and how post-feminism relates to all of this.

In this episode, we talk with Carrot Quinn, a long distance hiker who is utilizing her time in nature to support the work of Defend the Sacred AK. This organization is fighting to save the Arctic Native Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)from unnecessary oil drilling and destruction of sacred land. Carrot Quinn is a queer writer, photographer and long distance hiker. She's the author of the book Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart and this summer she and a friend will be hiking across Alaska via the Arctic to raise awareness and money for current threats to the ANWR and to support the indigenous groups that are fighting to protect their sacred homelands.

This week we bring you a listener-requested topic prompted by the Hypatia journal scandal, in which the feminist journal published an essay written by a scholar arguing in defense of transracial identity (aka, what Rachel Dolezel claims). In response, there was huge pushback and ultimately a demand to remove the essay. In response to that demand, there were also several other think pieces and Facebook posts coming out either in support or dissent of that call. We discuss our perspective on this, as well as other issues surrounding academic freedom, hate speech v. free speech, and also how call-out culture manifests in spaces online and elsewhere.

This week we are thrilled to have David Frenk join us to talk about yoga, social justice, and the work that he does with the police. David co-owns Your Yoga, a studio in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Your Yoga's social justice work includes its Dancing with Compassion series and Access Your Yoga, a non-profit that brings yoga and mindfulness into communities that don't have regular access to these practices.
For the yogis out there, we will be releasing an extended version of David's interview. So much brilliance, so little time.

Today, Melody and Raechel have the pleasure of talking to Dr. Alex Hanna, an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology and the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. Alex is also a transgender woman and recently published an article on Inside Higher Ed about her experience as a trans person on the job market. Alex generously discusses the challenges she's experienced as a transgender woman in academia and offers suggestions for trans and cis people to create more inclusive, anti-oppressive environments for trans people in colleges and universities. We touch on clothing, pronouns, managing CVs, and much, much more. Melody sits down with scholar & UK/European citizen Elena Hristova-Benge to discuss her views on England's vote to leave the European Union. She offers insight into problematic media coverage surrounding Brexit and also contextualizes the decision in relation to xenophobia, colonization, and more.

Today Melody and Raechel reflect on the tragedy in Orlando when 49 queer, mostly Latinx, lives were lost and 53 more injured. In the discussion they talk about the problems with the media representation of the event, specifically the erasure of Latinx identity, the inaccurate representation of motive, the perpetuation of Islamophobia, and blatantly ignoring our racist, homophobic country's complicity in this. In addition, we discuss a bit about the history of the Queer Liberation movement, specifically as it relates to gay bars, and what it means to live alongside grief as queer people. In today's episode, Melody and Raechel discuss their relationship to yoga. Raechel is a teacher and student of yoga, and Mel is a devoted student as well. But as critical scholars and activists, both struggle with being white Westerners participating in a practice that has been so commodified from its original roots in India. Throughout the episode, they reflect on whether or not practicing is a type of cultural appropriation, the roots of yoga and how it changed during the British occupation of India, and how, if at all, Western yogis can "decolonize" our practice.
