Echoes from Gaza, 15th December Monday 11PM(WhatsApp message from Gaza)Fadi writes: I write this message as the rain beats against my tent, and due to its intensity, I can barely hear my mother’s voice. The thunder strikes us from above like a nuclear bomb, accompanied by the sound of heavy gunfire from Israeli tanks to the east and the terrifying sounds of warships prowling in the sea to the west. I write this while shivering from the cold, barely able to hold my phone.Fadi Basem is a teacher, a writer, a lover of nature, of making things grow, and of books and language. His photographs highlight the small and beautifuldetails of the life around him. The Sanskrit phrase “Atithi Devo Bhava,” meaning “The guest is like God,” reflects the value of showing the same respect and reverence to guests as one would to a deity. It embodies a deep cultural principle guiding the host-guest relationship, highlighting the importance of generosity, care, and hospitality.This concept originates from the Taittiriya Upanishad, Shikshavalli I.11.2, which instructs individuals to regard their mother, father, teacher, and guest as divine: “matrudevo bhava, pitrudevo bhava, acharyadevo bhava, atithidevo bhava.”In essence, guests are to be treated with the respect and honor due to God. The Sanskrit term “Atithi” refers to someone who comes without prior notice, underscoring the spontaneous nature of visitors and the duty to welcome them at any time. In this episode of Writing Home, Madhvi interviews Sparsh the maker of Birdsong, painting an intimate portrait of the dying whistled language of the Hmong people in northern Laos, and Lost Migration a three part series on the untold stories of 1947 from other regions and communities in South Asia. Their conversation revolves around making films about lives of people, extractive culture, creative tension and artistic responsibility in a political world. Dan Tranh to Tinh and his family is like a teddy bear that comforts them, despite whatever distance to their homeland. Tinh Than plays on the đàn tranh , a tradtional plucked zither of Vietnam, whose origins come from an ancient bamboo-tube zither in Southeast Asia. Tinh Than as Subject Δ(Delta), remembers the past yet pushes forward, combining traditional methods with modern musical elements and localised textures, exploring its sonic compatibilities.Tinh and I met at Cubby Art Parties event and eventually found ourselves talking about the sounds and instruments from our countries. Me with my Tabla and Tinh with his Dan Tranh. In this episode Tinh serenades us with his Dan Tranh while we discuss what family means and how as adults we navigate and create community. As custodians of our diverse beautiful cultures we remember and redefine what belongingness means from our names to our songs. In episode 2 of What Your Seek Is Seeking You with Nadia Niaz on Writing Home, we continue exploring language, kinship, representation, and culture. I’ve been reflecting a lot about language since I last saw Nadia, language that sometimes feels inadequate to give a description to the sensory, to memory, of the mundane, and also things that are extraordinary. Someone like me who speaks 4 and reads and writes three languages still feels inadequacy of vocabulary when it comes to English. I want to find words that are perfect, words that telepathically speak to people. I sift through dictionaries and my little journal of new words so my sentences don’t lose their flow and words don’t sound insufficient. But then again languages also merely sound, the umms and uffs and cchmmm something I’ve inherited from the aunties around me that gossiped. An expression of agreement. Language is also wealth. Languages are also stolen or erased. Languages are mediums, a way to connect but never should be a performance of power or a tool to oppress. At Writing Home, I and Nadia who is my teacher, inspiration, and someone who shares home with me in language and our love for mountains came to the station to remind me of some very important things about writing, homesickness, kinship and nurturing. I am certain the world is only there to alienate us from ourselves. It surely isn’t made for us but it is also incapable of accommodating the beauty of the nuances our cultures and identities bring. It is their lack and never us and no matter how far we are from home and our people, we carry home in us. It fortifies and guides us. Everything that we create speaks and sounds of our homes. Nadia and I over and over again come to realize that we have remembered home in our bodies and through the various languages that we speak we travel back in memory. Nadia with tunes from South Asian artists like Vidya Vox, Hassan and Roshaan, Abida Parveen and Naseebo Lal immerse me in our love for the soil we share, India and Pakistan, one soil and spirit despite being torn apart by the british raj. The superhero Kamala Khan from Ms. Marvel also becomes our topic of discussion recalling magic and mythology in our culture. And the pining to know what made us and what we are. Nadia Niaz is the founder and editor of the Australian Multilingual Writing Project, an online journal publishing creative work that weaves together multiple languages. Her poetry has appeared in Rabbit, Not Very Quiet, Peril, and other national and international publications. Nadia received her Ph.D. in Creative Writing and Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne and has taught creative writing to everyone from pre-schoolers to postgraduates. In the fifth episode of Radio A & A, voices from the inside we interview people who are incarcerated or previously incarcerated. In this episode we interviewed Damien Linnane about ethics of solidarity when working alongside people in prison. Damien Linnane was sentenced to two years imprisonment in late 2015 for crimes that were described as an act of vigilantism. He wrote a crime novel, Scarred, in custody, and has had several articles on the prison system published since his release. He is the host of the podcast Broken Chains, which focuses on the experiences of the incarcerated and prison conditions, and is the editor of Paper Chained, a writing and art journal posted to inmates worldwide. A self taught prison artist, he is also the illustrator of the book This Is Ear Hustle. Damien holds a masters degree in Information Studies and works primarily as an archivist.
