It is Bonus Book Club! Today we are discussing the third book in the curse breaker series by Brigid Kemmerer called A Vow So Bold and Deadly.
Usually, we only do one book club a month, but we couldn't wait to read this book and also because it's a series, we didn't want to make everyone read the first two books - A Curse So Dark and Lonely and A Heart So Fierce and Broken - really fast to be able to participate in book club. Hence, two book clubs one month!
Spoiler! We LOVE this book, we LOVE this series and we LOVE Grey.
March is Women's History Month so we are reading a book that centers around women's issues and rights. We chose to read The Radium Girls by Kate Moore which is based on the incredible true story of women working in radium-dial factories during the first world war. These women get radiation poisoning and then the story follows their fight against the companies that deny any fault in their illnesses that develop because of their high exposure to what was supposed to be a safe element. We are so excited for this one - you don't want to miss it!

In this episode, we talk about a few of the common tropes that can be found in the books we read.
What is a trope? A literary trope is the use of figurative language, via word, phrase, or image, for artistic effect such as using a figure of speech. The word trope has also come to be used for describing commonly recurring literary and rhetorical devices, motifs, or clichés in creative works.
Examples of tropes are endless so we chose to only talk about:
- Off-Limits Romance
- Love Triangles
- The Secret Heir (or The Secret Hair)
- The Chosen One
- The Mentor
- Token Diversity
- Gruff Old Character Whose Life is Changed by a Precocious Child
- Bad Communication Kills

In this episode, we go deep into a discussion about Madeline Miller's first book The Song of Achilles which was published in 2011, won the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2012, and most importantly, made it to the top of both our lists for Favorite Reads of 2020.
There was so much to talk about in regards to this book because it is so well written and retells such a rich story that we could have talked about it forever but we kept it to only one and a half hours. In this episode, we chat about how 2020 affected our reading goals for the year. Between the pandemic and giving birth to babies, both of us struggled for a little bit, threw out our reading challenges and then still ended up killing it in the end with Shanna reading 62 books and Jennifer reading 48 - not bad. Then we discuss what we want our reading year to look like, what we are going to do or not do as far as challenges go and which books made it onto our must reads list and why.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Update! After recording this episode, Shanna came up with a different way of going to go about the money jar challenge. Instead of putting a loonie or a toonie in for every book read to go towards a book shopping spree at the end of the year, she came up with incorporating the five star rating system. Five star book? $5 bill into the jar. Two and a half stars? $2.50 in. We are so here for this. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We will be recording that episode on January 15th though so if you want us to chat about what you thought, let us know before then but don't worry, if you aren't done by then, the podcast will still be there for you to listen to after and we would still love to know what you thought! Speaking of next month! February is Black History and Month and, in celebration of that, we are going to read a book written by a black author. Each member of book club gets to put a suggestion into the hat and then we will read whichever one gets drawn. If you have any "must read" suggestions for this category, please let us know!

Hogfather is the 20th book in the Discworld series but don't worry, you do not have to read the first 19 books to enjoy this one - it works great as a stand alone novel.
