On November 22, 1971, about ten days before the India Pakistan war started, Pakistani fighter jets that were ostensibly providing air support to Pakistani ground units, entered Indian territory. They were intercepted by four Gnat aircraft of the No. 22 squadron.
In the air battle that ensued, two Pakistani jets were shot down and the pilots who baled out were taken prisoners, while a third Pakistani jet though hit and severely damaged, managed to escape into East Pakistan. This story is about Flying Officer Nirmajit Singh Sekhon, India's only Air Force pilot to have been awarded the Param Vir Charka, during the 1971 India Pakistan war.
Sekhon who was deployed at the Srinagar airbase, as part of a squadron of Gnat aircraft, single handedly took on six Pakistani attacking aircraft, and fought bravely till the sheer numbers overwhelmed him, and he was shot down and killed. Listen on....
In 1977, an Indian Air Force VIP squadron aircraft, carrying Prime Minister Morarji Desai and his entourage to Johrat, crashed while landing. While most members of the crew perished in the crash, Morarji Desai literally walked out of the crash, and lived to tell the tale !
