Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday in Singapore, and a major theme is prosperity. It ranges from giving hong bao (红包), red packets with cash, booking a lion dance troupe or going for the mega jackpot at the national lottery. Traditionally, December is the wettest month of the year, but 2025's January is proving to be very different with a month's worth of rainfall in a day (Jan 10th) and non-stop rain thereafter. The continuous rain is good for watering plants and filling reservoirs, but the monsoon rains are really good for helping you destress and nod off to dreamland.
This episode is an hour of blissful rain recorded in a quiet residential area, from 3am - 4am, with a calming blend of rain and cicadas. Bookmark this episode to use again whenever you need an assist to get a good night's rest

One of the oldest and most beautiful temples in Singapore is Thian Hock Keng temple in Chinatown: it used to face the beach and ocean, and sailers and merchants would come to give thanks or seek blessings from Mazu, Goddess of the Sea. Over the years, with land reclamation, it's now many blocks from the water, but it's still one of the must-visit temples here

The oldest Hindu Temple in Singapore is the Sri Mariamman Temple on South Bridge Road, in the Chinatown district. It's famous for the annual firewalking festival and the daily poojas. More low-key and intimate is the Archanai, a personal pooja performed by priests to bestow the blessings of the goddess, Mariamman, on the devotee.

In the heart of the downtown core of Singapore is an open field where many historical events took place as Singapore bloomed from British Colony into the vibrant, thriving, independent city-state that it is today. It's big enough to accommodate five football fields, and there's a public path through the middle that's always open. I went to the middle of the path to record the sound of a site that is up for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 2019, Changi Airport handled over 1,000 flights a day, which meant a take off or landing every 83 seconds. Use headphones for this episode, cos the binaural effect only works with headphones. Singapore is a financial centre in Asia that handles a phenomenal amount of money every day, but it's still cash that makes the heart sing cha-ching! I bought a note counting machine off Carousell and recorded the heck out of it as it counted S$1k in the form of 20 x S$50 bills.
Long term investors know that a diversified portfolio makes sense, but a LOT of people still have readily available cash, and scammers are targeting Singaporeans via sophisticated schemes that rely on tricking victims into sending money electronically overseas, where it's impossible to get back.

Taman Jurong is one of the oldest residential precincts in Singapore, developed in 1964 for the workers and families of the industrial areas nearby. When you're hungry, there are two traditional eateries in Taman Jurong.
The Market and Food Centre is busy in the day when the market is open, and in the evenings, food stalls serving tasty fare.
The other place is a coffee shop, called S11, which is located in the old Taman Jurong Cinema building. All the stalls are on the first floor which is open-air. Fans keep the air moving so you don't get too warm. The Zi Char stall has tables outdoors, where food, drink, and conversations flow freely.

In 1987, Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew conceptualized a freshwater dam to be built across the Marina Channel. 21 years later, on 31st October 2008, Singapore's 15th reservoir was opened.
The 350m long dam serves 3 purposes - water storage, flood control, and recreation. It took a year and a half before the seawater was naturally replaced by rainwater.
