Episode 113: THE MYSTERIOUS MURDER OF BILLY FEE WITH BRANDON WAGNERIt was a hot, sticky night in August 1890 when Billy Fee fell into the dark depths of the Ohio River. No one confessed to his murder, no one was even charged. So maybe this is why his ghost has been seen lingering along the shoreline haunting all those who approach. Episode 112: UFO ChaseIt is 5 in the morning when two Portage County Ohio sheriff deputies stop at the side of the road to investigate an abandoned car. Suddenly, they hear this strange humming noise, and when they turn around a giant UFO is hovering overhead. The UFO rises from behind the trees and hovers over them, drenching the ground around them in light. EPISODE 104: BURIED ALIVEDuring the late Victorian Era, the fear of being buried alive was very much real. Waves of cholera epidemics ravaged North America and Europe, leaving victims in near-dead states. Mirroring the concerns of the time, rumors spread about people being buried alive, so much so that many “safety coffins” and other graveside alerts were invented and implemented to prevent premature burial for the most decerning, and wealthy, of the Victorian Age. One such tall tale is that of Octavia Smith Hatcher of Pikeville, Kentucky. Whose death and burial have become a staple of Appalachian folk history. Bob is the George Rieveschl Curator of Archaeology at the Cincinnati Museum Center. He has been doing archaeology of the Cincinnati area since 1974 and holds both a BA and MA in Anthropology from the University of Cincinnati. He was an archaeologist with Miami Purchase Association (now Cincinnati Preservation Association) from 1977 to 1986. He began with the Cincinnati Museum Center in 1990. His interests include pre-contact ceramics and anything related to historical archaeology.

The late 19th century saw a lot of advancement in the medical sciences, but some medicinal traditions still stuck around- one, in particular, was medicinal bathhouses. Bathhouses are not new at all, humans have believed that water from natural springs can be beneficial by drinking or bathing in it all around the globe. In many places, hotels would spring up around these natural springs as locations to relax and unwind... Kat, Jen, and Christina talk about the magnetic springs of Bellbrook, Ohio.

Kat, Jen, and Christina welcome Shi O'Neill to talk about her book Haunted Hamilton and what it is like living in a haunted house with spirits sobbing and calling your name!
Shi O’Neill is a retired teacher and an avid reader who loves to immerse herself in a good story. She lives in a close-knit historic neighborhood in a small Ohio town that serves as her inspiration. Her first work, a novel, was based on her experiences in this historic district, where she has lived for a quarter of a century. She serves on multiple historic boards, which augments her love of local history. She has raised two beautiful children and has lived with her loving husband for the last twenty-five years in a nineteenth-century, three-story mansion. Although Shi has been writing for many years just for the love of it, she is now publishing her work.
We are going on a holiday hiatus! We will be back with season 3 in January.

Her books are published through Silly Hat Books. Chrissy has two urban fantasy trilogies, Road Ghosts and its companion series the Tipsy Fairy Tales. She reads her stories on her Alien Beer Podcast, which includes The Multiverse Blues, a science fiction serial. Chrissy lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, with her wife and several cats. In honor of Black History Month, Kat, Jen, and Christina welcome Dr. Cassandra L. Jones (https://uc.academia.edu/CassandraLJones/CurriculumVitae) to discuss the tragic story of Margaret Garner, a young woman who escaped to Cincinnati with her family from the home in Boone County where they were enslaved. The tragedy and trial were catalysts of the Civil War but her own voice has been lost. She never had the opportunity to tell her story; appropriated by both sides to push their narrative.
Toni Morrison based her book Beloved on Margaret’s story and imbued it with a paranormal subplot.
Dr. Cassandra Jones, an Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Cincinnati and an affiliate faculty member in Film and Media Studies and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, helps us navigate this devastating part of Cincinnati and American history and its relevance in today’s society and media.
Listener discretion! Tonight we are talking about an iconic Cincinnati true crime, but this story is more than that. The Garner family story is about fighting for liberation during the years before the American Civil War, how it was denied, and its impact on society to this day.
Trigger warning for child death and trauma. This is a hard story to hear but I would not suggest skipping it.

A little about James A. Willis: Fueled by a steady childhood diet of Boo Berry cereal, Creepy magazine, and late-night Vincent Price movies, Willis soon developed a taste for the unexplained and quickly began seeking out all things strange and spooky.
He is the co-author of Weird Ohio (2005) and Weird Indiana (2008) and was also a contributing author to Weird US (2004), Weird Hauntings (2006), Weird US II: The ODDyssey Continues (2008), and Weird Encounters (2010). Willis’ unique and offbeat writing style was officially recognized in 2006 with his induction into the Grand Order of Weird Writers. In addition, Willis has been a contributing author to several books in the Armchair Reader series, including Weird, Scary & Unusual (2008), Armchair Reader Goes Hollywood (2010), and Haunted America (2011). In 2012, Willis struck out on his own with the publication of Haunted Indiana. For 2013’s The Big Book Of Ohio Ghost Stories, Willis crisscrossed Ohio to bring readers over 75 of the Buckeye state’s most famous (and infamous) ghosts. Willis’ latest project, Ohio’s Historic Haunts: Investigating the Paranormal in the Buckeye State, was a joint effort with Kent State University Press. Released in late 2015, the book approached hauntings and ghost stories from a historical perspective and chronicled Willis’ personal experiences when locked inside of some of Ohio’s most haunted locations.
He also is the founder of the Ghosts of Ohio Paranormal Investigation and Research Team as well as a friend to the Cincinnati Cabinet of Curiosities comics anthology!
We talk about his scariest ghost hunting experience, why every state has its own version of various urban legends, and why Ohio is proud of its weirdness!

Thanksgiving should be a time to remember the indigenous people of our country rather than the story woven around the origin of the holiday.
One way to give thanks is a ghost supper, which many native people are adopting.
“One major difference I was taught is that the barrier between the living and the spirit world is weaker during this season. We take advantage of this so the entire extended family can eat together. The more I grew, the more families, we went to and we participated in more host ghost suppers. It would become a perpetual event that would be celebrated over the course of late October through early December.”
