What is archaeology's role in helping us interpret the Bible? In last week’s episode we raised some initial guiding principles related to what archaeology is, and this week we discover how complex this conversation can be. The early church was Jewish. The people present for Pentecost were in Jerusalem for the Jewish festival of Shavuot. What was Jesus meditating on when he was in the wilderness for 40 days? It is speculation, but I like to think he was quoting Deuteronomy to himself and preparing for his public ministry. Why? Because when faced with the temptations, he only quotes from Deuteronomy 6 and 8, and they have surprising parallels with the Israelite history in the wilderness.

Some people read Galatians as an anti-Jewish letter, but the key to understanding Paul's message is rooted in the Galatian context. Galatian gentile believers wanted to be circumcised to become Jews. They felt that would give them something that they otherwise did not have, but Paul tried to dissuade them.
