I started podcasting around November of 2004 and this is, more or less, my 20th anniversary podcast. Episode 197. But I had the hardest time coming up with a new idea for the show.
In the past, I mostly played music and used it as a promotional vehicle for new releases. In the age of streaming and playlists, perhaps that’s not needed anymore, and it should become more of a “talky” podcast - something I’m not used to doing.
On Substack, I follow the musician Damien Jurado, and he posted a note about how was tired of listening to podcasts with musicians talking about music. He thought they should talk about different topics, and the one he mentioned was “shoes”.
That seemed like a clever idea. It definitely kickstarted my brain.
I deliberately made the podcast “low-fi” by using my bluetooth earbuds with my phone in the Skywalk in downtown Des Moines, and walking through 801 Grand, which is super echo-y, and outside in the cold. I’m comfortable leaving voicemails this way, and the quality was “good enough”. It’s a little rough in the beginning, but it does get better.

Overnight Thoughts was created a using a lap steel guitar and numerous effects. The aesthetic of the band it's released under, Vibrating Wires, is based on haunting starkness and ethereal fog. Many of the other Vibrating Wires releases sound like processed lap steel, but with Overnight Thoughts I took it was several steps further and really smoothed out the rough edges.

This is what I call "bubbly ambient" - it's music that seems freeform, but there are restrictions in place to keep it within the boundaries without it being repetitive.
Drifting a long track, nearly 15 minutes. If you want a certain section, I can cut that out for you. There are no stems. The music is not multi-tracked.

What is Ambient Matyk? It's a name I've been releasing live ambient improv recordings under for the past decade or so. I've got a few releases out there as of the start of 2019, but a lot of the past catalog is not easily available, but is getting re-released in the next month or two. Right now, it's four albums of sounds. Plus... a new Ambient Matyk release coming in early February 2019.

I had to consider what edges the music has that might be smoothed out, what drama it has that might be subsumed. I was to consider how I might do such things while retaining something that is inherently listenable.

The Assignment: Make very quiet music for very late at night for very fragile psyches.
Step 1: It’s the middle of the night, long past dusk and long before dawn. You can’t sleep.
Step 2: Think about what kind of music you’d want to hear right now — super quiet, super subtle, unlikely to wake you, potentially to ease you back to the comfort of your pillow, or at least to calm your mind.
Step 3: Record the sort of music that Step 2 made you imagine.

Hi, this is Mark Rushton of markrushton.com - thanks for listening to my podcast of original or live ambient and electronic music and field recordings. This is Podcast #139 produced on Friday, August 31 of 2018.
In this podcast, I'm revisiting and extending a piece I made in 2012 for the Disquiet Junto. This was from the fourth Junto, started on January 31st of 2012, and involved remixing sounds from Marcus Fisher's track "Never There", originally released on his 2012 album, Collected Dust.
While I had all the project files that Fisher originally provided, some of the loops I added in 2012 have become lost, and so I had to leave them out. Then I repeated some sections and extended it out to nearly 10 minutes. If you want, you can hear my original remix on SoundCloud - a link is in the description.

This podcast contains a 27 minute track by my alter ego "Chillout Preservation Collective". It's kind of a dub ambient thing, and rather minimal in nature.
Why do I release tracks under pseudonyms? Well, first because it's easy to do in this modern digital era. If I've got something I've made that I think is outside the realm of what I normally do, then I might as release it on it's own. I'll tell a small number of people following along about it, whether it be via podcast or my email newsletter, and blog post. It doesn't have to be a big deal. Second, why not? When I started getting into music in the 80s, I was always fascinated by artists who released things under various names.

This is a a live, 10 minute remix of my track "Chuck Bird" (the original is on my 2008 album "Flow") using the iOS program Samplr. Created just after Chuck's would-be 60th birthday and a little more than 11 years after his death.
Chuck Bird was an early internet friend due a mutual appreciation of British guitarist Bill Nelson and other artists. Chuck coordinated and produced fan-created compilation albums of numerous artists, not just Bill Nelson. We talked regularly on the phone and met once for dinner when I lived in Houston in 1997 and his work schedule brought him to town.
Bradley Charles "Chuck" Bird was born November 11, 1957. He died in Nashville, Tennessee after a 30 year battle with diabetes at the age of 49 on November 14, 2006. He graduated from San Pedro High School in 1975.

This podcast is a two track preview of the new release by Ambient Matyk, a long-running side group I've had with bass guitarist Jon Harnish and other guests. The new album is called Cerebral Night and it was recorded on August 12th of 2017 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Following the Cerebral Night tracks, I play 5 older tracks by Ambient Matyk, going as far back as 2005. All were recorded live and completely improvised.
While "Cerebral Night" is on all streaming services and digital download retailers, I have it at Bandcamp for "name your own price", so if you want to download it for free, you can. You can also download all the other Ambient Matyk releases in the same manner, except for the one of them where I had to make it at least a dollar.

In 2015, I walked around downtown Iowa City, where I live, to capture sounds on the perimeter of the Iowa City Jazz Festival, which occurs every 4th of July weekend. Those sounds were edited and compiled into Ambient Rushton Podcast 80: http://ambient.libsyn.com/ambient-rushton-podcast-80-walking-near-the-iowa-city-jazz-festival
In 2017 I'm back in downtown Iowa City during the Jazz Festival, although in this recording I'm closer to the action, but not too close. Throughout most of this recording you can hear parts of the act playing at the time, although in most situations the dominant audio are crowd sounds, people walking and eating, and the general hustle and bustle of nightlife on nearby streets.
The picture used here is one I took at the Iowa City Jazz Festival in 2000, when my wife and I attended, but it was in a different location (and a much smaller event back then) and the headliner was Bill "the world's slowest guitarist" Frisell. He was excellent.

For this week's Disquiet Junto, the project was to make ambient recordings based on source audio from the artist Chris Kallmyer. He recorded the music using bells and bowls he constructed from clay sourced on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Louis.
The goal was to make recordings that can also be played in the San Francisco gallery where Kallmyer’s work is currently on display as part of the exhibit “Listening Is a Luxury.”
Among Kallmyer’s sonic objects made from the St. Louis clay are ceramic bowls. When making a piece of music from the source audio I was asked do the following: (A) use no additional source audio, (B) aim for a sound that is just as gentle as the source audio, (C) consider using stereo effects to reflect the circular shape of the bowls.
So I made this piece, and I think it fits in with the instructions for the Disquiet Junto. I made a 3 minute version and published it on Soundcloud, but that was extracted from the 22 minute version heard here.

For the 249th Disquiet Junto, relating to the 80th birthday of composer Steve Reich, I reworked a track of mine called "Baldcypress Trees" into a variation I call "Baldcypress Knees". The version you hear in this podcast is extended out a a few more minutes and is about 7 and a half minutes long.

In the past I've always said I make music and sounds to help me concentrate through my daily work as a software tester. For this audio show I take it a step further and use actual sounds of me working on my laptop at a standing kiosk in my office, located near a large printer/copier. The recording was processed a bit to disguise voices and to lower the pitch of my keyboarding. A touch of reverb was added and I played with some EQ settings.

This Road is an old track of mine, from 2003, when I was making music with more of a beat. It has ambient-ish elements throughout. I still like it and wanted to share it in the podcast with only text presentation. I have become more comfortable with the idea of this podcast or "audio show" rarely having me talking in the beginning or throughout. Lately I have been thinking of going back to occasionally making more beat-based music or perhaps even pop songs. But we'll see... Keep following that muse, right?
