In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill discusses her recent travel experience as she witnessed a Black woman being harassed by a flight attendant and eventually kicked off the airplane, for doing nothing wrong. She discusses the ways that racism, white supremacism culture, and bias all contributed to the woman being mistreated and harmed, and she also discusses ways that people of all identities can use whatever privilege they may have in order to stand with marginalized communities and individuals.

What are the culture, challenges, and contributions of Asian Americans? Why is the model minority myth a tool of anti-blackness?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Terry Park PhD, the founder and CEO of Maum Consulting, LLC, an Asian American Studies-based educational consulting business offering JEDHI (justice, equity, diversity, healing, inclusion)-minded online courses, curriculum assistance, and professionalization engagements. They discuss the importance of integrating mind, body, and spirit and how those are disintegrated in the process of assimilation, which causes people to lose access to their ancestral wisdoms. Park expresses how whiteness was a door that he kept hitting but couldn’t open; he realized this when he was a kid and thus avoided everything Asian. Listen as they make the connection between racism and intergenerational trauma.
Dr. Terry Park previously served as a faculty member at seven higher education institutions, including Harvard University, Wellesley College, the University of Maryland, College Park, Miami University, and San Quentin State Prison. Included on the list, “Inspiring Activists: Trailblazers and leaders in the community and in the struggle for social justice” by former San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim, Terry has participated in several national and community-based Asian American organizations across the U.S., including a stint as Executive Director of Hyphen magazine, an award-winning national print- and web-based publication on Asian American culture, politics, and arts. Raised in San Jose, California, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Seoul, Korea, Terry's free time includes getting to know his new home of Columbus, OH, scaling gym walls and pub menus, learning to make ice cream, and enjoying walks with his spirited mixed-breed rescue puppy, Miles.

What are the origins of fatphobia?
What are the ways that diet culture keeps women from embracing their power?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Kelly Hurst, an anti-racist disruptor and equity strategist. They discuss the importance of being vulnerable and naming mistakes or the ways one has perpetuated systemic racism in order to dismantle it. Hurst explains how dominant culture paved the way for white women to become a danger to society and how it affects people who “look white” being included or excluded from the concept of conditional whiteness.
After spending 23 years in the public education system as a teacher, literacy coach, guidance dean, and assistant principal, Kelly witnessed firsthand how the system helped white students thrive while continuing to marginalize Black students. As a result, Kelly left the education system and started Being Black at School. Kelly is best known as the author of the award-winning blog Mocha Momma, where she chronicles her life as a former teen parent, a birth mom, and a single mother who took her then 3-year old daughter to college with her. Kelly will serve as the founder and executive officer of Being Black at School.

Have you ever felt shame about your body, particularly when something’s not quite right in your female or male sexual organs? How has the patriarchy perpetuated this shame and led to disparities in Black women’s health, and what can be done about it?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill discusses her own experiences with shame around women’s health issues, the way the patriarchy perpetuates silence and shame around women’s bodies and women’s health, and how that can lead to adverse health outcomes in our healthcare system for women and, in particular, Black women.
She discusses the way that racism and bias are baked into the healthcare system, and the importance of healthcare professionals recognizing and owning their biases in order to reverse the inequities in healthcare. She also talks about the concept of intersectionality, a term coined by Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw, and how that impacts how a person may experience bias and oppression.

Does living a spiritual life make you exempt from racism? Do you ever tell yourself: I don't see color, I see human beings, and we all just need to love each other more? Do you avoid meaningful conversations about race because they make you uncomfortable?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews
Crystal McCreary, a Yoga, Mindfulness, and Health Educator in NYC. Crystal discusses the ways that spiritual practices intersect with racism: she explains how true, conscious spirituality is the missing piece in the fight to dismantle systemic racism, how white people must be willing to make conscious choices to do things differently, and what it means to truly create a 'Brave Space'. Jill and Crystal have a lively discussion about how white people must confront their discomfort about speaking up about race, and they must do so without fear or hesitation.
Crystal is registered with Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT-500 level, with a specialty RCYT for children’s yoga. She leads Yoga Alliance certified yoga teacher trainings, facilitates professional development workshops, and speaks internationally about the impact of yoga and mindfulness on the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents and adults. She also teaches public workshops in New York City and curates transformative wellness retreats which explore her own mindful vinyasa practice, her curiosity about anatomy, and her passion for intelligent sequences that sow vigor and softness in body, and a more peaceful mind through mindfulness meditation. Crystal is on faculty in the Health and Wellness department at The Dalton School in New York City.
Aiming to build and strengthen community through a deeper understanding of our individual, complex human selves, Crystal teaches to the who is in the room, making all her programs accessible, relevant, inclusive and adaptive to the physical, emotional and social needs of a full spectrum of populations. She is proud to serve on the Yoga Alliance Diversity & Inclusion committee as an advisor for the upcoming revised Yoga Teacher Training program standards.

What do you do or say when your white child makes a comment or asks a question about race? How do you balance wanting to 'protect' your child from the horrors of racism with raising them to be open-minded, compassionate, and ready to stand up against racism? How do you talk to them about the experiences of Black children in the United States?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Yvette Brown, a white woman with two adopted African-American children. Yvette discusses her own challenges discussing race with her children, her work on the Race Conversation Project, some advice for white parents on how to answer tough questions about race, and why (and how) to start having the conversation about race immediately.
Yvette M. Brown is a white mom raising two black boys in San Francisco who one day realized that her years of nestling comfortably within the folds of white privilege were over. After immersing herself in the racial justice movement she decided it was time to do more than read and watch…it was time to act. She’s the Founder of the Awkwardness & Grace Podcast, and is
currently working on a qualitative research study with UCSF Professor Nicole Wolfe, exploring how white, black and biracial families talk with their kids about race. Yvette also works as a fine artist, exploring the themes of tension and balance in her work.

Do you practice anti-racism daily? What does appropriation look like in the Western wellness setting? What questions can you ask yourself before deciding on a yoga or meditation teacher?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Melissa Shah, MPH, yoga therapist. Shah recounts her experiences as an Indian-American within the Western wellness world and the need for her own journey with trusting her heritage - learning to be enough. She explains her journey towards understanding that teaching yoga is not about making people like you and the need to take a step back and honor the culture it came from.
Melissa (she/her) deeply believes in applying the culture and teachings of yoga to bring to light the long standing disparities in wellness spaces. She is passionate about bringing yoga and Ayurveda back to its roots, and reclaiming representation within the wellness community. Melissa also utilizes her background in public health to integrate yoga into schools and clinical settings. Currently, Melissa works individually with clients offering yoga therapy in the Viniyoga tradition. She offers weekly community chanting classes, as well as pranayama classes for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color). Her offerings focus on the intersection between yoga and social justice, and how to tune into our true self and dharma (calling, purpose) when it comes to taking action toward what we believe in.

What does it mean to practice radical self-love? What are the downfalls of the term “anti-racism”? What is the importance of community in the fight for social justice? What is the difference between seeing Covid as a war instead of a humanitarian crisis?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Ruby Sales, a human-rights activist, public theologian, and social critic. She is a self-described “long distance runner for justice” with a mission to find true connections between people with differing viewpoints, explain the importance of creating community with trust, and highlighting the ability for true change. This conversation addresses the interpersonal conflict of minorities hating everything about themselves that isn’t white and actively running away from their ethnic identities in order to claim whiteness. They dive into ways for other marginalized and oppressed cultures to claim their own identities without minimizing the realities of Black and indigenous peoples in America.
Sales discusses what keeps her accountable and the downfalls of the term “anti-racism”, which is a replication of white supremacy culture that only says what we’re against and not what we’re for.
Ruby Nell Sales is a nationally-recognized human-rights activist, public theologian, and social critic, whose articles and work appear in many journals, online sites, and books. Under the tutelage of Professor Jean Wiley, Sales joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in the 1960’s as a teenager at Tuskegee University and went to work as a student freedom fighter in Lowndes County, Alabama. Sales serves as the founder and director of the SpiritHouse Project. The SpiritHouse Project is a national nonprofit organization that uses the arts, research, education, action, and spirituality to bring diverse peoples together to work for racial, economic, and social justice, as well as for spiritual maturity. SpiritHouse roots its work today in exposing the extrajudicial murders of African-Americans by White vigilantes and police.

What is cultural appropriation? What are some of the pitfalls of white people teaching or practicing yoga and meditation? How is appropation different from respect or admiration?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Priya Verma, a yoga therapist, physician’s assistant, and expert in cultural appropriation. Priya explains how cultural appropriation harms everyone, because it whitewashes powerful practices such as yoga and meditation of their culture and true philosophy, thus stripping away many of the benefits and purpose of these practices. Cultural appropriation causes further harm because it enables someone else to portray themselves as the expert in another culture’s lived experience and wisdom, thus marginalizing the culture and people of origin (and often making them strangers in their own culture as it is portrayed in the west). To avoid the pitfalls of cultural appropriation, Priya encourages all yoga and meditation teachers and practitioners to avoid toxic positivity, hold themselves accountable for deep-rooted prejudices, and call out misuse of sacred texts or symbols.
Priya Verma is a yoga therapist and physician’s assistant with a South Asian cultural and spiritual background. She is the owner of Sandalwood Yoga, a dedicated yoga therapy practice in 2017 where she offers complementary non-pharmacologic solutions to pain management and surgery, meditation classes and trauma-informed management of chronic conditions.

Have you ever gotten defensive when someone called you out for having privilege? Are you ready to start speaking out when friends or family make racist or sexist comments? Do you find yourself shutting down emotionally when it comes to really examining how you may be unknowingly contributing to systemic racism?
In this series on recognizing and learning about systemic racism (with the hopes of helping to dismantle it) Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice, as well as 'non-experts' who have joined the fight to dismantle systemic racism. In this video, Jill interviews Greg Schisla, a white man living in rural North Carolina who focuses on fighting racism and deconstructing the idea of whiteness. What is it really like to be both a physician and a mom of someone diagnosed with sickle cell? Why are patients with sickle cell often undertreated and their pain dismissed as drug addiction? How can the experience on both sides of a racially-charged disease help healthcare professionals learn more about the challenges of navigating the American healthcare system as a Black person?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities,, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Dr. Nicole Peoples, a physician and mom, who describes her journey battling her daughter’s sickle cell diagnosis and systemic racism within the healthcare system. Systematic racism is ingrained within physician training, and this is particularly evident in the care of patients with sickle cell. Dr. Peoples explains how important it is for physicians of all backgrounds to check their preconceived notions at the door and acknowledge that, most often, their patients with sickle cell can help contribute to their own care in a positive way.
In addition to race-related bias associated with sickle cell, doctors are also taught to be biased against sickle cell patients the same way they are taught to be biased against people with substance abuse issues. Dr. Peoples explains that healthcare professionals must understand that these patients are in pain. The goal is to get that pain under control as well as accepting they may be defensive from their previous trauma. She lists several important ways that healthcare professionals can improve care and minimize the effects of bias in their care of patients with sickle cell.

How can both Black people and white people get through the discomfort around racism? What are some strategies to see through the immediate struggle to find inspiration and motivation? What will it take for our country's values to shift enough to allow for real change?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, author, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Dr. Maiysha Clairborne, a family practitioner, Integrative Medicine specialist, hypnotherapist, NLP expert, physician coach and the co-creator and Chief Operating Officer of Jill's Conscious Anti-Racism movement. Dr. Maiysha shares her own personal struggles with burnout early in her medical career and how she learned early on that her path was going to be different. She tells the 'behind the scenes' story of how she connected with Jill and joined the Conscious Anti-Racism movement, even though she never saw herself as an activist. Dr. Maiysha's explains how she copes with the daily stresses and discomforts of systemic racism and what motivates her beyond the fear.
As a female physician, Maiysha had spent most of her career putting work first. However, when she became pregnant with her son, one of the first things to come to mind “how will I balance my profession as a physician with my commitment as a mother?” That question informed the way she next moved in her career. She designed her second career specifically so that she could be available for her son. With that in mind she started Stress free Mom MD in 2016, coaching physician moms to create balanced lives that they design. Not long after that she began helping burned out Dr. Mommies transition into better jobs and career paths giving them more time and freedom to be with their families. It wasn’t long before she became known for what she does, and for having made a successful transition from clinical medicine and was asked to coach in the area of entrepreneurship. That is when she decided to create the Next Level Physician Entrepreneurs Institute. She wanted to show doctors that it was possible to leverage what they already know and create a profitable business that more than paid the bills while having freedom, fulfillment and a life they truly loved by their design. Maiysha joined Conscious Anti-Racism in 2020.

What does it take to navigate the world as a Black man? What do white people miss out on - emotionally, culturally, and otherwise- when they continue to see whiteness as the standard? How can international travel serve as an antidote to racism? What is the importance of seeing yourself in other people who aren't like you?
In this series on anti-racism and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, and author interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Nicholas Landers, a career teacher who has taught on 3 continents who is now a motivational speaker, author and podcaster. Nick shares his own personal experience of systemic racism and bias in a world where white people are the standard, including the energetic, physical and emotional toll of always being 'on'. With incredible candor and vulnerability, he shares what it's like to go through everyday life as a Black man, and how white people miss out from truly getting to know the 'full person' inside the Black people they interact with each day. A world traveler, Nick shares his perspectives on how travel can help white people find themselves in people who are different from them, as long as they give it a chance.
Nicholas Landers is an award-winning teacher & coach, diversity speaker, author, blogger, and occasional television extra. He's dined in one of the world's top 10 restaurants, ascended the world's tallest building--by elevator, and taught on three continents, traveling to more than 30 countries in the process.

What is spiritual bypassing? What are the dangers of using spirituality as an escape from the messiness of life? What happens if we use spirituality as the SALVE rather than the SOLVE? How can we use spirituality to dismantle systemic racism, within ourselves and society?
In this series on recognizing and learning about systemic racism (with the hopes of helping to dismantle it) Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Faviana, a Brooklyn-based Vedic meditation expert (and eternal optimist). In our western spiritual culture, idolizing unity over justice results in silence and complicity in systemic racism. Faviana discusses the value of inquiry and the dangers of spiritual bypassing, and why it is essential for all of us to deal with our systemic racism demons to achieve true liberation. Don't miss the 3 things Faviana wishes all white people did or knew in terms of anti-racism!
Faviana is a Brooklyn-based Vedic Meditation teacher, community builder, and unshakeable optimist dedicated to helping people live richer, happier lives. She discovered her passion for teaching while using the Vedic Meditation technique to manage her own professional stress. She trained in the technique for two years before becoming one of a select few teachers to complete the highest-level qualification as a master teacher of Vedic Meditation. Faviana is passionate about creating spaces where people are inspired to care for their mental and physical well-being while feeling empowered to make a positive impact on the world.
As an advertising executive who embodied the ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality for years, she understands the stress and anxiety that comes with working in high pressure environments all too well. Within a few weeks of learning Vedic Meditation, she was less stressed, more productive, and more well rested. Now, Faviana is committed to helping people integrate the same simple, transformative technique that changed her life into their own.

What is a 'safe space' and who gets to decide whether or not it's safe? How is systemic racism perpetuated by trauma and also the cause of trauma - not only for Black people but also white people?
In this series on social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Bianca Wilson, anti-racism activist and co-founder of Say Space, a Diversity and Inclusion consultancy.
Bianca shares her personal and professional journey from working at a well-known advertising agency to leaving corporate America and co-founding a Diversity and Inclusion consultancy. She discusses terms such as 'safe space' and 'unconscious bias' and how they can be fraught (and cause more racial trauma) for Black people when not applied in a trauma-sensitive way. Bianca talked about the inter-generational trauma that white people have experienced (the "dirty pain" of white trauma), which has both led to and perpetuated systemic racism, and the need to truly heal the trauma from systemic racism for both Black and white people in order to end systemic racism.
Bianca Wilson (she/ her/ hers) supports individuals and organizations to get to the core of what is needed so effective communication, impactful leadership and authentic relationships can thrive.

What good is a healthcare system if it doesn't actually work for the people it serves? How can we be intentional about auditing the ways that systemic racism shows up in our own life, and then taking that next steps to do something about it?
In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Jessica Brooks, MBA, the CEO and Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health and the founder of the Executive Action Response Network (EARN) and The Health Desk. Jessica shares her own personal experience of systemic racism and bias in the healthcare system as a Black woman and how that has informed and inspired the work she does today to create "an accountable healthcare system that actually works for the people". Jessica embodies her own philosophy, "well-doing so we can have well-being", and she shares how important it is that we each do an intentional self-audit of how systemic racism shows up in our lives, and then take action to dismantle it.
As CEO of the Pittsburgh Business Group on Health, Jessica provides the vision to transform healthcare for PBGH employer-members. Under her leadership, PBGH has emerged as a national force aimed at improving mental health, health equity and quality for millions of lives touched by employer-based health plans. “Racial disparities are the blood that keeps the healthcare engine going.” How important are trust and communication in improving the health literacy of people marginalized by our healthcare system? What are some ways to build this trust, when the current state of healthcare often capitalizes on Black and Brown bodies? In this episode, Jill interviews Arnie Jones, well-known speaker and the president of ChromaHealth. Arnie shares his knowledge and insights about the ways that the healthcare system, including providers, must change in order to improve healthcare outcomes for Black people. He discusses the importance of building trust and communication from within a community, rather than the often-used ‘top-down’ approach, which is often ineffective and leads to poor health outcomes and a continued deterioration of trust. Arnie also shares some shocking insights into the ways in which capitalism and racism intersect, with painful and dangerous outcomes.
Recognized as an effective leader and expert in designing programs that improve patient finding and adherence to medications by enhancing industry, faith-based, medical, and community stakeholder collaboration, Arnie Joseph has more than three decades of experience in public health, pharmaceutical, and health communications industries.
As a strategy to improve his clients’ bottom line, Arnie has developed, launched and managed “cross-functional” coalitions dedicated to improving racial health disparities by forming strategic partnerships with over 660 medical and community stakeholders in disease hot spots in San Antonio, Miami, the Bronx, Memphis, Newark, Brooklyn, Houston, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. Qualitative analysis of Arnie’s community-based programming in Baltimore was published in the Journal of National Medical Association.
Arnie’s passion for developing campaigns that bridge scientific data and community engagement has garnered him recognition from the medical industry, pharmaceutical executives, advocacy groups, and federal health departments, earning him certificates of commendation from the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Minority Health, Diabetes Health and Wellness Academy of NYC, and the American Diabetes Association.
