For book lovers, there’s no such thing as too many books! But to spark that love, everyone needs access to them – a reality that remains out of reach for many communities where children can’t easily access public libraries, and schools are strapped for resources.
The literacy crisis in America is real. According to the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), only 43% of U.S. fourth graders scored at or above a proficient level in reading. Studies also show that students with greater access to books perform better academically than their peers who lack this simple resource.
That’s why, this October, in honor of National Book Month, SONIC Drive-In is turning its passion for literacy into action. You’re invited to interview some of the people working to spread the love of reading and bring books into the hands of those who need them most.
SONIC donates a portion of every drink purchase back to support local students and teachers through its Limeades for Learning initiative. For National Book Month, the SONIC Foundation is teaming up with educational nonprofit partner DonorsChoose, donating $1.25 million to fund reading and literacy projects submitted by public school teachers for the “Fill Every Shelf” campaign.
But that’s not all – SONIC is also partnering with Little Free Library to bring 25 free “take a book, leave a book” libraries to communities in need across the country.

Every September, the Army Reserve joins the nation in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, reflecting on our shared history as Americans and recognizing the rich mosaic of people and cultures who build and strengthen this branch of service. International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the accomplishments and unique gifts of women around the world. And while women have gained a lot of ground over time, they are still severely underrepresented in the workplace – specifically when it comes to the technology sector. Though they make up half of the workforce, women hold only 28% of the jobs in tech. In the more specialized and fast- growing area of cybersecurity, that number drops to just 26%.
CyberSeek reports that there are more than 570,000 open positions in the US alone – a 35% jump over last year. Additionally, another 3.4 million positions remain unfilled around the world. With so many opportunities available, why do women still hold such a small share of the industry?

According to IRS data, since 2010, approximately 3 million people have been victims of tax identity theft fraud, criminals use personal information to file fake returns and steal taxpayer refunds. HaJ, an Emmy-nominated film, video, media producer and performance artist formerly of the development team of Sony and Ayoka Chenzira, Division Chair of Arts & Humanities, Spelman College, an award-winning, internationally acclaimed film and video artist. A pioneer in Black independent cinema, Chenzira is one of the first African-American women to write, produce and direct a 35mm feature film, "Alma’s Rainbow," one of Billboard Magazine’s top 40 home video rentals. She is also noted as the first African-American woman animator.
Chenzira was invited to serve as the first William and Camille Cosby Endowed Professor in the Arts at Spelman College in 2001, producing a wildly successful multimedia stage version of her screenplay, "Flying Over Purgatory" (starring legendary actress Ruby Dee and featuring a South African cast), which was featured on CNN Headlines/CNN Inside Africa. Chenzira also received the HBCU Digest's "Female Faculty Member of the Year" award in 2014.
This mommy-daughter and writing-directing duo are committed to creating projects that analyze, deconstruct and sometimes satirize racial and social identities. Simply put, they make us laugh out loud and shake our head about the way black people are portrayed in the media, using the arts as a vehicle.
Their current project, FUNNEL CAKE FLOWERS & THE URBAN CHAMELEONS is a multi-media stage show about being black in corporate white America. The satirical project analyzes how and why people of color still feel the need to put on the mask and police our emotions in front of white people.
