The life of radio personality and celebrity blogger Vivian ‘Gossip Viv’ Billings was never easy. As a mother of two at the age of sixteen, she dealt with the harsh realities of an abusive relationship, and a boyfriend uninterested in helping raise their children. With great personal strength, she eventually left him behind and began a new life with her children.

Years later, Vivian once again called on that inner strength when her child, Kadijah, confided in her that he was not her daughter, but her son. The news came as a shock to her. She vowed to protect Kadijah and herself by separating her personal life from her public persona. All is well until Vivian began filming VH1’s, The Gossip Game. It isn’t long before Kadijah’s gender identity becomes an on camera topic of discussion, and what was once a personal matter is laid out for the world to see. Faced with the feelings of being exposed, emotions soon run high, heated arguments take place, and Vivian loses track of what’s most important; her relationship with her child.

Although it seemed like things would never get better for Vivian and Kadijah, who is now known as Kamal, they inevitably do. Vivian is proud of the man Kamal is becoming, and although uncertain at times, she provides love and support to him when he needs it the most.

Vivian penned her debut novel, How I Came To Accept Him: Loving Your Child For Who They Are. In this emotionally accurate account, readers will be given a front row seat into her world as she deals with her reality and one thing is for sure is that her life is not scripted and there is no editing nor deleting of scenes.

Urban fiction, also known as street lit or street fiction is a literary genre set in a city landscape; however, the genre is as much defined by the socio-economic realities and culture of its characters as the urban setting. The tone for urban fiction is usually dark, focusing on the underside of city living.

According to Publishers Weekly Street lit, urban lit, or hip-hop lit—whatever you may call it—the popular and controversial genre generally focused on crime, sex, and violence set in African-American neighborhoods.  It is also a multi million dollar industry.

Former drug addict, ex-con, kidnap victim and stripper…serious titles, huh? Yeah, well, with over 17 arrests, and 23 years of addiction, Cynthia Miller-Scott has worn them all, at one point or another, but none of it, absolutely NONE of it, even    BEGINS to describe this awesome mother of 5. Cynthia Miller-Scott is just a go-getter. She’s a wonder on heels and a hustling giant who literally knows what it means to take nothing and build it into something.

Cynthia isn’t one of those who grew up wanting to be an author, or who felt that she’d write a bestseller and live happily ever after. No. Trust me, Mrs. Miller-Scott is much too practical and down to Earth for that. This isn’t the tale of some sweet little ghetto angel who grew up AROUND the madness; it wasn’t her cousin, a boyfriend or her brother and them that she SAW in the mix. This isn’t a woman who went to school and got good grades then lived a basicly normal life in the ghetto AROUND all of the madness. No. Cynthia is one of those rare hood chicks who came off of the porch, out of the yard and got rigit there in the mix with the best of them. She played in the mud and found comfort in the filth, and just when people thought they had her all figured out, she changed. She burst like a flame: went down into the soot and emerged in Arizona like a phoenix. Now, how prophetic is that?

I love the written word more than cooked food and that's saying a lot. I write because I have to(It's the only way to silence the voices). There is always a story going on in my head so if you see me in public I'll probably be scribbling furiously in a notebook.

Strawberry Mansion, my first novel, is semi autobiographical(I am Tabitha in the story). It was a very painful part of my life that I felt an overwhelming need to give voice to. I've changed a few things to protect the guilty, and add a bit of distance from myself to the story. I love that book. It's a sort of snapshot of my journey into adulthood. Although the characters are young, It's filled with adult content, bad language, sex drugs and rock and roll, you're gonna love it.

Begonia Brown, my sophomore novel, is street fiction at it's finest. I am very proud of this book. It is the hood as I recognize it, minus the glitz and glam... I pushed the envelope with this book. I felt free to tell ugly truths because the book isn't about me, It's about where I come from. Begonia Brown, although it was hard to write, is one helluva ride!

One of the most vicious gangsters to ever walk the streets of Newark is free to roam again after serving a 15 year prison sentence. Respected and feared by all, and loved by only a few, the Black Charles Manson was sentenced to death by lethal injection after his conviction for a trail of gruesome murders. The streets were finally able to breathe freely, believing that he would die in prison. His fate was sealed - until he met another Newark legend, the notorious kingpin, the Mayor.

! The Mayor controlled a great percentage of Newark's heroin trade for only five years as a free man, but as a Federal prisoner, he managed to control that trade for over a decade and a half. From behind bars, the Mayor spent over a quarter of a million dollars cash to secure Man- son's freedom. In return for the funding, Manson offered his lifesaver control of his army to use at his disposal. Once the Mayor was finally released, Manson submitted his army over to him as promised.

! With the Mayor's high quality heroin coupled with Manson's army behind him, they had the perfect recipe for success. Manson issued strict orders for his army to provide 24-hour pro- tection over the Mayor. Somehow his orders were disregarded and the Mayor was assassi- nated. How or by whom, Manson has not a clue. For years he's sat in prison praying he could get back on the streets to get revenge. Now, his prayers have been answered.

! As a free man, Manson discovers the code of the streets have changed drastically, and the hit on the Mayor came from within Manson's own camp. A man on a mission; will he track the murderer down and have his revenge, or will he be devoured by the new era of gangsters and meet the same fate as the Mayor?

In southern Dallas, Texas, Sunny Giovanni-- or "Gio" as she likes to be called-- was born on the fifth day of June in 1989. Born to a mother who was a teacher and a graduate from Texas A&M University you couldn't so much as watch a Disney movie if you hadn't read the book beforehand. Gio has had a very strong history with literature, diversifying from poetry (winning placements in oratorical contests), to thriller short stories as a way to vent her frustrations.

The pen was handed down to her from an older sibling as a means to focus her negative energy and anger into something different but was used as a way to alter her own situations.

As a preteen Gio witnessed how much her writing could touch someone when she left one of her prized spirals in a classroom without knowing. Two weeks after it went missing someone brought it back to her asking for more, letting the young author know that almost everyone she knew read the story, but without knowing it was her in the story she had written.

Sunny Giovanni is an advocate for gay and transgender rights, and says: "You can't help who you are and you damn sure can't help who you love. You should be true to who are rather than to conform and live the ultimate lie and live miserably until the day you die." Credited from the poem she penned "Titanium", modeled after her novel.

Gio is a mother of three children, the founder of Lucid Legends Publishing/ Photography, Kno Joke Entertainment, the host of "We Talk TOO Much Radio" on BlogTalk Radio and blogs on Tumblr under the name "KnoJokeGio". She is a friend to many and prides herself on making a smile out of an extremely horrible day. "It doesn't matter if you're having a bad day... a smile could make everything else seem so small. Crack a joke when someone is hurt and see how fast they cheer up. Even at a random moment.

Native New Yorker, Cheryl “Cherry Bomb” Winley was born and raised in one of the most affluent counties in the eastern most part of Long Island. The progeny of scholarly and dignified parents, Cherry’s childhood not only mimicked richness and decadence it encompassed balance and an avid love of the English language. However, being gifted with a passion for English and poetry wasn’t her only reward; Cherry’s parents would reward her every action with monetary treats. By the age of 15, Cherry’s lifestyle would consist of limitless credit cards, fine dining, cars, and shopping and more shopping. The excessive gratification from her parents would in turn increase Cherry’s desires and by the age of 16 she would meet her first real boyfriend, a drug dealer, who would change the suburban girl into a lady and a hustler’s wife. Fast money, fast living, diamonds, designer brands and fancy cars; Cherry’s years as a young adult would be a ‘glamorous life’. Cherry decided to pen her strategy, thus, her authorial debut I Am Not a Hoe – a handbook that details Cherry’s best possession; her game, her time, and her attention and as Iceberg Slim would say “the game is to be sold not told”.

“This is gangsters, guns and drugs. I don't think it gets much scarier than this,'' said Assistant District Attorney Mary Ellen Karst in asking for the maximum prison term for Rumont TeKay, age 18, a high ranking member of a notorious street organization out of Chicago.

Like many of his peers, Rumont took to the street life at the impressionable age of 10 years old. After his initiation, he quickly climbed the ranks within the organization and became one of its largest distributors in the cocaine trade by age 18. Eight months after his eighteenth birthday, Rumont was convicted of the largest cocaine bust in the county’s history and received a minimum mandatory 35 year sentence, as a first time offender.

While his back was against the wall and hope was bleak, he found solace in the elements of another writer's storylines. His inspiration flared and Rumont TeKay put his mighty pen to paper and hasn’t let up since. Through it all, he has learned that hope never dies just as long as one breathes life into it. After six years of appeals and twelve years spent behind bars, Rumont has been released and is now on a mission to expose the atrocities dealt in the land he calls home.

My story is not unlike a lot of men and women that came from the struggle. Struggling mother, dead beat dad that I only saw once my whole life. I grew up fast and became independent at an early age. I've lived my whole life surrounded by the things I write about. I have truly seen and done it all. After spending most of my twenties in and out of prison I decided there had to be a better way. I made a change for my kids and for the man above that kept me alive and breathing through it all. I write because I have a creative itch that I feel I will die if I don't scratch. Writing is my air. I am King Benjamin...you can call me KB!

According to Wikipedia Urban fiction, also known as street lit, is a literary genre set, as the name implies, in a city landscape; however, the genre is as much defined by the socio-economic realities and culture of its characters as the urban setting. The tone for urban fiction is usually dark, focusing on the underside of city living. Profanity, sex, and violence are usually explicit, with the writer not shying away from or watering-down the material.

Shannon Holmes was born and raised in New York City's most northern borough; the Bronx.  Holmes' entrance into the literary world was anything but ordinary. Armed only with a G.E.D. and the desire to change his life, Mr. Holmes crafted his first novel and signed his first literary contract from prison, while serving a five year sentence for various drug convictions. This was truly an amazing feat when you consider Mr. Holmes had never even written a short story in his life. He truly made the best of a bad situation. He first achieved success with his first novel 'B-more Careful', which has gone on to sell a half a million copies to date. This may not sound like a lot of to the general public, but in the literary world Mr. Holmes is platinum. By producing such lofty sales numbers, Shannon was able to parlay the success of his first novel into a two book, six figure deal, with publishing giant Simon & Schuster. Avoiding the sophomore jinx, Shannon Holmes crafted the critically acclaimed 'Bad Girlz', which sold fifty thousand copies in its first week. His next novel 'Never Go Home Again' was hailed as best work... With this he achieved yet another milestone, he became the first author of the street genre to have his novel printed in hardcover. Since then Mr. Holmes has signed an even bigger deal publishing deal with St. Martin's Press, it's rumored to be in the high six figures, for two novels.

The lure of enticing words has always captivated Pamela D. Rice. Even at the tender age of two, this soulful native South Carolinian would intensely gaze at books, pretending to read and embrace the content within the pages. Pamela became an avid reader, and soon found a natural progression and flair for expressing herself through illuminating words which resulted in her becoming a published poet while in the eighth grade. Known for her stimulating and thought-provoking views, Pamela possesses a fervor for creatively giving a voice to victims who suffer in silence, afraid to speak for themselves. Inspired by everyday situations and social exchanges, Pamela has always enjoyed observing people and dissecting their interactions; this hobby became her muse. It is her desire to become a literary vessel that brings light to the social ill of domestic violence and its reach beyond all racial, cultural and socio-economic class. Through inspirational prose, she is destined to heal the human soul. When Pamela is not writing, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and exploring other cultures.

Essence best selling and NAACP Literary Award Nominee, Karen E. Quinones Miller started her literary career in 1999 when she self-published her novel, Satin Doll, and sold 3,000 copies in six weeks, and ultimately 28,000 copies in less than six months. Although Miller, who was formerly a staff writer at the Philadelphia Inquirer, had approached dozens of literary agents and publishing companies about Satin Doll, it was only after her novel’s phenomenal sales success that major publishing houses stood up and paid attention. So many houses were interested at that point, that a literary auction was held and Simon & Schuster won the publishing rights to Satin Doll, and a second book, with a six-figure bid. Miller subsequently published seven books through major publishing houses, but she also maintained her own publishing company – Oshun Publishing Company, Inc. – which she used to publish Satin Doll. Oshun Publishing went on to publish the novel Yo Yo Love, which became an Essence best seller and launched the literary career of Daaimah S. Poole who has since published six other novels with Kensington Books. Essence best selling author, Miasha – author of Secret Society, Diary of a Mistress, and Chasers – also considers Miller her literary mentor and says Miller was instrumental in her landing her first publishing deal with Simon & Schuster. Best selling author Kwan Foye has often publicly referred to Miller as "The Aretha Franklin of Black Publishing." Miller, who is included in the book Literary Divas: The Top 100+ Most Admired African-American Women In Literature, often gives Writing and Publishing/Self-publishing workshop in her home of Philadelphia, and is the CEO of Oshun Publishing Company. Miller’s new book, An Angry Ass Black Woman, will be published by Karen Hunter Books (an imprint of Simon & Schuster) in October 2012.
