Last month Diana Rios, the daughter of one of four indigenous leaders recently murdered in the Peruvian rainforest by illegal loggers left the Amazon for the first time to travel to New York. In front of a room-full of human rights advocates, she was handed the Alexander Soros annual Award for Environmental Activism – on behalf of her late father, his colleagues and their community. This week, a fortnight after Diana’s acceptance speech, governments from nearly 200 countries will descend on Peru for the UN Climate Conference in Lima. There is a paradox at play here.
