What happens when a leader unveils their vulnerability? Does it weaken their status or lead to a more profound connection with their team? These intriguing questions are the foundation of our discussion with Jacob Morgan, a trained futurist and renowned authority on the future of work, leadership, and employee experience. We navigate through the complexities of leading with vulnerability, drawing from Jacob's extensive research, real-world examples, and insights from his latest book, 'Lead with Vulnerability'.

Ever been in front of a crowd with your heart racing, palms sweating, and mind in overdrive? Yep, I've been there too. That's why today, I'm excited to take you on a backstage journey into the fascinating world of public speaking. And who better to guide us than Adriana Baer, a stellar coach who equips leaders with powerful speaking skills, drawing from her rich theater background.
Adriana opens up about how her theatrical past not only helped her face her own fears but also how it serves as a unique toolkit to empower her clients. She focuses on fostering a genuine connection with the audience, aligning with their goals, and digging deep to find that motivation.
We dived deep into how a well-crafted narrative can completely transform your speech, keeping your audience hooked. Adriana graciously shared her method of helping clients achieve the perfect mix of structure and flexibility in their speeches. We also touched on the high-energy Disrupt HR format, where the challenge is to deliver an impactful presentation that's tailored to various events and caters to diverse learners. I also threw in a few of my insights on slide design - a topic that sparks quite a debate.
But, a perfectly designed speech can fall flat without authenticity, right? So we plunged into a candid conversation about this crucial element. Adriana shared a hilarious anecdote where she found herself unintentionally mimicking an "NPR personality" on her podcast. We emphasized the importance of voice warm-ups, truly living the words we speak, and ensuring our presentations echo our authentic selves.
Addressing the ever-present fear of public speaking, Adriana drew fascinating parallels between speaking and singing, delving into the psychological ties that bind the two. We concluded with practical tips on overcoming stage fright and where to find more of Adriana's incredible resources.

As an employee, you've got to figure out how to get noticed to move your career ahead and make sure you're getting the interactions and relationships that you need. I’ve had the best job in the world for over 10 years now - where I have the privilege of speaking on stages and in training rooms to groups of leaders around the world about how to increase their influence, focus strategically, and make a positive impact at work and in life.
When I stepped out on my own in 2010 to start my business, I had a little bit of experience, a healthy dose of confidence, and a whole lot of hope that I could build the relationships, and create impactful presentations that would result in a successful speaking business.
But like a lot of things in my life where I tend to jump off the cliff first, and then think about my parachute later, I wasn’t fully prepared for what it would take to find my lane, to determine how to set my speaking fees, or how to become a recognized expert.
So, queue admission into the school of hard knocks, where I’ve gained quite an education along the way, and as a result, have ultimately managed to build a business and life that I truly love.
Last year, my friend Dr. Daniel Crosby - who is a great public speaker himself, and was a also my guest on episode 14 of the Impact Makers Podcast, where he talked about understanding human behavior to do well, do good and do you - asked if I would join him on his Standard Deviations podcast to talk about what it takes to create great presentations -- and if you’re into that kind of thing, how to actually get paid to speak, which is one of the most frequently asked questions we both receive.
Over a year later, the content of our conversation is still accurate and timely, and I continue to hear from people in Dr. Crosby’s audience who have found it helpful. So I asked him if I could share it with you today, and if you’re interested in crafting great presentations, and/or getting paid to speak, I think you’ll find it helpful.

Have you ever found yourself frustrated with corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives? I certainly have, and that's why I invited Zach Nunn to join us today. Zach, the founder, and CEO of Living Corporate, - a diversity, equity, and inclusion digital media network that centers and amplifies black and brown professionals in the workplace through narrative storytelling. Zach has been on quite the journey - from HR manager at Target to launching Living Corporate - and today, he's sharing that story with us.
I’ve been a fan of the podcasts, videos, blogs, and more that Zach and his team have been creating over the last five years. As an entrepreneur, I’ve also been fascinated by how something that began as an idea became a single podcast – then became a vibrant network of podcasts, web shows, blogs, and more – all while Zach was working full-time in leadership roles in HR, change management, DE&I, and strategy and growth for several large organizations.
Listen in as we explore the significance of authentic conversations and the impact that they can have in creating a more inclusive workplace. Plus, Zach will reveal some exciting new plans for his future, which include making Living Corporate his ONE job - instead of a second job. He talks about developing a learning platform using AI technology, providing organizational assessments, and launching the Living Corporate Collective - an online space for those passionate about workplace fairness to collaborate for systemic change.
Get ready to be inspired, challenged, and motivated to take action. Whether you're a people leader, a diversity advocate, or an aspirational ally, this episode will leave you better informed to make a positive impact in your own community by creating spaces where all voices are valued and can be shared and heard.

Today, I’m sharing a conversation with you that I had recently with Shari Simpson, who is the Senior Manager of Thought Leadership at Paylocity on the HR Mixtape podcast, which she hosts.
I asked Shari if I could also share the conversation with you because I thought she asked some great questions about the challenges and opportunities that HR leaders are facing in a world where work and employee expectations have changed forever.
We discussed how technology and artificial intelligence impacts HR, as well as how HR can lead in the future of work in the areas of attracting and retaining talent, redefining employee engagement, and connecting employees with meaning and purpose in their work. We also touched on how HR leaders can build their influence, and make a significant impact in their organizations as well as the broader HR community.
I encourage you to follow or subscribe to the HR Mixtape podcast so you can listen to more thought-provoking interviews, compliance tips, coffee chats, and the latest HR-related news.

Ever thought of poetry as a tool for revolutionizing our thought process and sparking creativity? Well, our esteemed guest, Arend Boersma, a human resources leader, hip-hop enthusiast, spoken word poet, and writer, helps us unravel this unique concept. He passionately talks about how his journey in writing, particularly during the trying times of the pandemic, became an emotional outlet that eventually led to the creation of his book "Poetry at the Heart of Business."
Arend’s rich global experiences shaped his unique identity and seeped into his work. He explains how his transition from globetrotting to settling in Rochester, New York, brought about culture shock, especially dealing with the harsh winters. He shares how he embraced different cultures he was exposed to and how these experiences have influenced his writing. His love for hip-hop, specifically, has been a significant influence on his style of writing. His book intriguingly explores company culture and the overall employee experience.
In the final part of our conversation, Arend tells us about his innovative approach of using spoken word poetry and hip-hop for change management. He uniquely incorporates haikus into retreats and summits and uses the power of call-and-response concepts to foster a sense of community. He ends the discussion by sharing his perspective on life's opportunities and challenges and underlines how different viewpoints can lead to growth and change. This episode is a fascinating blend of art, creativity, and leadership that you wouldn't want to miss. Tune in and let's explore the power of poetry together!

Today on the podcast, I’m chatting with Derik Clark, a human resources leader and recently retired Army counterintelligence agent who has a passion for teaching others about the power of nonverbal communication.
Derik is a US Army veteran with 22 years of service, who specialized in counterintelligence investigations and intelligence informant operations.
Through those responsibilities, he became a subject matter expert in body language assessments and high-stakes interviewing in threatening environments, and he’s taught those skills to thousands of US soldiers in both the official Army counterintelligence school, as well as in live environment military operations.
Derik founded Bodysights body language training to help leaders and organizations to notice key nonverbals during interviews, client interactions, investigations, performance reviews, and negotiations.
In our discussion today, we’ll talk about the importance of reading and understanding body language and the impact it can have in various contexts, as well as how understanding these concepts can help leaders to foster stronger relationships, make better-informed decisions, and navigate complex interpersonal dynamics more effectively.

Although social media has changed and evolved over the last couple of decades, it’s still a valuable place to be – to learn from, connect with others, establish your credibility, build your personal brand or business brand, and grow your career.
While there are tons of places we can hang out online these days, many of which offer limited value for our work pursuits, there’s no doubt that LinkedIn – the “professional” social network that’s been around since 2002 – is still a place where you need to be visible online. It is worth the investment of your time, especially if you’re looking to grow your career and your business as well as attract opportunities.
LinkedIn is pretty straightforward. Simply create a profile, connect with people, post and share your content, etc. However, you may not be getting the most out of it as you would if you were to create an intentional strategy for using LinkedIn.
There are multiple ways that you can optimize your LinkedIn profile to build your personal brand and grow your career. By doing so, you can use LinkedIn to build your credibility as a thought leader and your reputation as a business leader that others want to work with or do business with. Finally, you can readily access a vast network of people and resources that you can utilize (for free) for your personal and professional development. In this episode, I’m going to share some of my favorite tips and strategies for creating a LinkedIn profile that stands out, works for you, and increases your opportunities!

Social media has become one of the major culprits of overwhelm for many of us. As you seek to continue to build your brand or grow your career this 2023, we’re diving into what’s working and what’s not working with these different social media and online platforms, in our next few episodes.
There are ways you can use social media for good to grow your career or your business. At the end of the day, we have to be intentional and strategic about how we spend our time consuming, creating, and sharing content – to attract and engage the RIGHT people, who want and need to hear what we have to say.

Who is the first person that comes to your mind when asked who has made an impact on your life? Well, if you had asked me who has been an impact-maker in my own life, then my answer would be my mother. But her legacy is so much more than the impact she has had on my life.
My mother died at the age of 83 in 2020. I don't have any hurt or pain around her passing because I truly believe she was living her best life. She was a woman of faith, who lived a life of service. She was a person who reached out to others and gave something without expecting something in return.
This episode includes some personal reflections on my mother’s life and her impact on me and others. Hopefully, this will remind you that you're never too old or too inexperienced to step out in faith.

As we close out 2022, I’m focusing this month on how I can best prepare myself – and you – for a successful 2023.
In my world, this time of year is typically filled with prediction posts and podcasts, where thought leaders share what they believe will be the challenges and opportunities ahead in the new year, related to the world of work.
Since my focus is on preparing leaders – like you – to embrace the future of work, and to develop the skills necessary to lead with impact, instead of making predictions that may or may not come true, I’m sharing with you 10 areas that are critical for leaders to focus on, in order to lead with impact in the future of work.
People want to effortlessly work how, where, when, and for whom they want. 40% of respondents in McKinsey’s Great Attrition Great Attraction Survey published in September 2021, said that Flexibility was the number one reason they accepted their current job.
85% of the hourly workers who participated in the survey reported that scheduling affects their overall job satisfaction.
Prioritize Career Growth and Development Opportunities for Your People
According to Gloat Research Group’s Great Resignation 2.0 Report, the number one reason given by employees who took a new job as to why they would leave again was the lack of career development opportunities.
The same survey revealed that 54% of the employees surveyed reported that their employers either don’t take their future interests and aspirations into consideration enough or not at all.
Help Your People to Connect with Meaning and Purpose in Their Work
Connect people to something bigger than themselves and help them contribute.
According to Gallup research, a 10% improvement in employees' connection with the Mission or Purpose of their organization leads to an 8.1% decrease in turnover and a 4.4% increase in profitability.
I love this quote from Laszlo Bock – the current CEO & Co-founder of Humu and former Google SVP of People Operations -> “The single biggest thing you can do [as a leader] is make the work feel meaningful.”
What is an organization’s Purpose? It’s what we do for our customers. Some good examples:
We help people get jobs - Indeed.com
Commit to Real Change and Action with Your Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Efforts
Set meaningful goals
To learn more about how to do this, check out Impact Makers Episode #51 - The Value of Taking a Strategic Approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Jennifer Ingram 5. Invest in Your Leaders – Specifically Front-Line Supervisors
The biggest gains businesses will witness in the future will come from hiring and training the right managers, who care for, develop, and maximize the strengths of every single employee.
70% of the variance between the highest engaged teams and persistently disengaged teams is just the manager. (Based on meta-analytics of 100 million employee interviews – Gallup)
Quote from Jonas Prising - Chairman & CEO of ManpowerGroup:
“Helping people to pre-skill, upskill and reskill for in-demand roles in this Skills Revolution remains the defining challenge of this decade. It was important before the pandemic and is even more critical now – to create a better workplace where everyone is able to unleash their full human potential and have a more equitable share of the prosperity.”
Impact Makers Episode #64: Creating Career Pathways to Unlock Opportunity for the Workforce of the Future with Matthew Daniel
SEE Your People
Show Appreciation.
According to the results of a SurveyMonkey / Bonusly Survey, 63% of employees who are regularly recognized were “very unlikely” to look for a job in the next 6 months, and 89% of employees who are rarely recognized are open to accepting a new job.
The number one reason why people left a job without another one in hand was uncaring leaders. - McKinsey's Great Attrition Great Attraction Survey
Grow Yourself
Own your Personal Development.
Challenge yourself to learn aspects of business and leadership that are not within your current responsibilities.
Develop Your Influence
Invest In relationships.
“You don’t get influence through control. You get influence through other people’s positive experience of you. You get influence through people wanting you involved - not by telling them you have to be.” — Neil Morrison – Former Group HR Director, Penguin Random House now Group HR Director at Severn Trent Water 10. Embrace (and lead) Disruption.

As we're coming to 2023, what are the things you want to start, stop, and continue doing? Make this a part of your goal-setting process. One my previous mistakes was I didn't set up any concrete plans to actually make my goals happen – which is a 100% recipe for failure. Therefore, it’s important to take time to reflect and look back on maybe what's working, what's not working, and what's missing in your business.
In this episode, I’m going to share with you FIVE things that I plan to start, stop, and continue doing in 2023, as I begin to prepare myself to set goals and have a successful new year. Hopefully, this will encourage you to do the same as part of your goal-setting process as well.

If you're a leader, and you have people that you must lead, manage, care for and grow, it's been a challenge to both keep people in your workplace, to keep them engaged, to understand what their needs are, and to ensure their success in their jobs so that the company can remain competitive and continue to grow in the future in a vastly changing world of work.
As you're doing your goal setting and goal planning for the next year, I want to share with you 10 questions that you should be taking into your discussions, even if they're not formal performance review discussions.

How has your year been? Thankfully, 2022 has been a good year for me and my businesses thus far, and I'm really looking forward to what 2023 will bring as we continue to recover in many ways from the global pandemic, while also still dealing with the effects of that, and the changes – some better and some worse that have come as a result of that. Moving forward, I will be focusing on what's new and next, revising and updating things to better serve my clients and meet the needs of leaders out there who are preparing for the future of work.
Today, I’m sharing some of my recommendations for podcasts that I listen to as an avid podcast listener. These are podcasts that belong to a few categories including the future of work, human resources, speaking, leadership, business entrepreneurship, and general interest.

Self-care isn’t selfish. It is necessary. We truly can’t pour from an empty cup and we can’t help others if we’re emotionally worn, completely stressed out, or too sick to help. In this episode I’m talking about self-care and the five areas I’ve been trying to improve for the sake of myself, my family and my business.
I’ll talk about the importance of sleep, rest and exercise, for our physical and mental well-being. Then I’ll dive into the effects of gratitude on our happiness. I’ll also discuss how caring for others can be a form of self-care. Lastly, I’ll cover caring for your time. Finding balance and reclaiming your time can have a lasting impact on your life and I’m going to share how it changed mine.
My goal is to help you understand the importance of self-care and how to practice it, proactively, without feeling guilty. I hope you enjoy today’s show.

If you’re thinking of looking for a new job or switching careers, and you’re planning to use the same resume you created 10 years ago, well, that probably won’t be too useful. Times have changed, and so has resume writing.
There are actually things you need to be intentional with when it comes to showcasing your strengths and making sure you’re getting your message across. Today, I’m turning the tables as I’ve invited Chris Villanueva, the CEO & Co-Founder of Let's Eat, Grandma, an online resume service that was ranked by The Balance as the best resume service of 2022.
Chris shares some of his best advice for job seekers and career-changers related to creating resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles to get them noticed – and to help them connect with their dream job. We also talk about how to overcome some of the challenges that we all face with building new professional relationships in an increasingly hybrid or remote work environment.

Especially with the pandemic, the great resignation, quiet quitting, and all the dramatic shifts the whole world is currently experiencing, a lot of companies are struggling internally. Left unattended and this could lead to a toxic culture.
Obviously, hard conversations have to be made because you can’t just ignore those issues happening collectively. And one of the ways to address this among many other issues is to ensure a happy, safe, and fun culture – and make work suck less.
In today’s conversation, Jeff Harry talks about how he takes positive psychology and plays to tackle some of the most challenging issues that a lot of companies are currently struggling with so they can make work suck less.
With a mechanical engineering degree, Jeff ended up doing team building and special events for the top tech companies in the world. He realized how people were struggling with having difficult conversations, especially dealing with that one person at work that ruins work for everybody else.
He created Rediscover Your Play as an experiment to explore how we can address issues like toxicity in the workplace, toxic masculinity, and having difficult conversations – through the lens of positive psychology and play.

A career change is a huge thing that a lot of people are dealing with right now, whether they feel stuck in their current job or they just want to do something different that they enjoy. But how do you position yourself for the job that you want?
As an employee, you've got to figure out how to get noticed to move your career ahead and make sure you're getting the interactions and relationships that you need. That being said, this is a two-way street. Leaders also need to figure out how to provide a safe space and environment for their people to connect, even remotely.
In today’s episode, I’m sharing a recording of a conversation I had with Chris Villanueva when he invited me to podcast and chat about networking, relationship building, and how the changing world of work impacts both job seekers and people leaders.
Chris is the CEO & Co-Founder of Let's Eat, Grandma, an online resume service that helps professionals rebrand themselves to land interviews for their dream jobs. Recently ranked by The Balance as the best resume service of 2022, Let’s Eat Grandma helps people during one of the most stressful areas of life – the job hunt. Mental health well-being is now at the forefront of what employees want and what employers are looking at. And more and more, we're now seeing that employees expect employers to be involved in their life outside of work.
As leaders, we need to be able to create a culture that provides psychological safety within the workplace if we don’t want to be a part of the statistics of people exiting the workplace at the speed of light.
In this episode, we're joined by Désirée Pascual, the Chief People Officer at Headspace Health, a digital mental health company. As a trained psychologist, Désirée specialized in organizational and group dynamics focusing on communication and conflict resolution. Following years of clinical practice, she moved on to HR leadership roles at Kaiser Permanente, Carrot Inc, ginger – and now, Headspace Health.
Informed by human-centered design principles and data-driven inquiry, Désirée is committed to curating joyful and resilient workplace cultures where employees are empowered to do their best work. Today, she shares great insights and practical action steps we can take as leaders to support our own mental health, and that of our employees.

Are you retaining talent by developing and moving them into other opportunities that benefit both their career and the organization? Data shows that the more we invest in developing and seeing those opportunities for other people to move around the organization, the greater the loyalty to the company, and the greater the retention.
There is also data showing the tightening of the talent pipeline, and even if there is, they do not necessarily match how the workforce is progressing. How do we then bridge this gap between talent shortage and the need for skills development? One of the keys is to find ways to plug your talent into the needs of the organization – across the organization.
In this episode, Matthew Daniel shares great insights into how leaders can create career pathways to unlock opportunities for the workforce. Matthew is the Principal Consultant of Talent Strategy and Mobility at Guild Education, a company that partners with forward-thinking organizations to transform education into strategic talent advantage, especially for their frontline.
With his previous career background working with Capital One and as a consultant for some of the country’s biggest employers, the entirety of Matthew’s career has been about investing in others, seeing them grow, and trying to match them up with opportunities so they can go big, and do bigger and better things.

Recently, there has been a significant drop in leadership engagement levels, and leaders have now begun to feel the effects of everyone's struggles during the pandemic.
There's also a new phenomenon called "quiet quitting," and a recent poll suggests that leaders are much more likely to engage in quiet quitting than their actual workers. They are showing signs of fatigue without any kind of recognition or remuneration for what they've done to lead others. Now, how does this impact the future of work? And what can the leaders of leaders do to help mitigate quiet quitting?
In this episode, Dr. Alexander Alonso, the Chief Knowledge Officer for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), shares some valuable insights into reinventing the future of work by focusing on the acronym GESHWI. Find out what has changed in terms of how workers are viewing the workplace over the last couple of years and how you, as a leader, can align yourself with what the world of work and workers are looking for.
In his role, Alex leads the operations for SHRM’s research functions, the SHRM Knowledge Advisor Service, and SHRM’s Certified Professional and Senior Certified Professional certifications. Alex is also the author of the books, “The Price of Pettiness: Bad Behavior in the Workplace and How to Stomp It Out” and “Talking Taboo: Making the Most of Polarizing Discussions at Work.”

If you’re susceptible to the great resignation, which a lot of companies are, unlocking empathy in your own organization is the key. And if you haven't done it yet, then you’re missing out. Empathy is the difference-maker when it comes to employees and it’s a currency you can spend freely in a time where a lot of organizations are struggling.
Since my goal is to equip and encourage you to be the most impactful leader that you can be, I thought it would be helpful to bring on an expert in the topic of empathy and leadership to share more with us today.
Marcy Klipfel is the Chief Engagement Officer at Businessolver. For the last seven years, Businessolver has released the State of The Workplace Empathy Report that examines the behaviors and benefits that make workplaces empathetic. As an experienced HR leader Marcy oversees all aspects of HR, driving a high-performance culture at Businessolver.
In this episode, we discuss what empathy actually means, why some leaders struggle with empathy, and what they can do to strengthen their empathy muscle. We'll also chat about the 2022 State of the Workplace Empathy Report, and why empathy ratings in the workplace are at an all-time low. We also discuss some practical steps organizational leaders can take to help develop a culture that includes empathy as well and more empathetic leaders in their workplaces going forward.

This is an interesting time in terms of recruiting and retention for organizations because they’re going to have to deal with all the generations and everyone's different wants and needs.
Clearly, we don't want to separate people by generation as if they’re alien races from another planet, also, because we all have traits and characteristics molded by “nature and nurture.” But these generations all have shared life experiences as members of a particular cohort due to their respective stages of life. Therefore, having an understanding of each generation is useful in every company’s hiring process.
Today, we particularly talk about the Gen Z population, their characteristics, and what they’re bringing to the table. Joining us is Steve McIntosh, founder & CEO of CareerPoint.com, a career advancement coaching platform.
The Gen Z cohort consists of people born between the end of 1994 and 2009. Essentially, these are people who will have entry-level roles that are yet to progress to leadership. And so, this is an incredibly important cohort, especially for companies who have ambitious growth plans, so they should have them figured out.

Quick question: when was the last time you asked each of your team members how they’re doing – like how are they REALLY doing? You never really know how that ONE question can create a massive impact on your company.
As a leader, you want to be able to prepare yourself and your team for this dynamic future of work. And one of the key metrics that you need to invest in is employee engagement.
A Bonusly study found that while employee engagement increased in May 2020, it was followed by a significant drop the next month. The survey showed that 63% of workers feel unappreciated by their employer on a daily basis and 59% of people felt that they have NEVER had a boss who “truly appreciates” their work.
The good news is that the world is ever-changing, and so is the future of work. In this episode, I’m sharing two Action Steps that you can implement immediately to make a positive impact, and likely affect the engagement levels of your team.

Everybody’s talking about the metaverse these days, but Workplace from Meta is different – I mean, the clue’s in the name, right?
Workplace is a business communication tool that uses features like instant messaging and video calls to help people share information. Think Facebook, but for your company.
It's part of Meta’s vision for the future of work - a future in which your job isn’t just something you do, but something you EXPERIENCE. A future in which we’ll all feel more present, connected, and productive.
Start your journey into the future of work at workplace.com/future.
—
Well, hey there Impact Makers!
The future of work is going to happen, whether you’re engaging with the idea of it or not.
But I believe that you can truly make a difference as a leader in your workplace, and in the lives of those that you lead and serve as we navigate the future together, by being intentional about how you approach your work, and your life.
The Impact Makers podcast will be back each week, and I’ll be sharing tools, tips, and resources to help you embrace the future of work, build your influence, and leverage your expertise to create positive, lasting change.
My core belief is that if you’re in a position of leadership, or aspiring to be in one, you are uniquely situated to make a positive and measurable difference in your organization - and in the lives of those around you.
Now is your time!
Because people will be the key to organizational success in the future - more than ever before.
In the future of work, when there aren't enough humans to fill open positions, or there aren’t enough humans with skills that are needed to do the work that’s required, it will be the leaders who are able to inspire great work, develop their people, and share a compelling vision to get - and keep - everyone engaged who are able to achieve results and thrive.
So please stop what you’re doing right now, and make sure that you’re subscribed, or following this podcast in your favorite podcast app, so you can join me here each week as part of your personal growth and development journey.
Because I believe that you can change the world through your impact on others. Let’s do this!

I’m excited to share my conversation with Dr. Todd Dewett in Episode 57 of the Impact Makers Podcast. I met Dr. Dewett several years ago, when I was just getting my start as a professional speaker, and we both shared the stage at a regional conference.
At that time, he was a successful university professor teaching leadership and innovation to MBA students - but he didn’t look or sound like most of the professors that I’d come across in my academic career. Big, tall, bald, and covered in tattoos had never greeted me when I walked into a classroom in school.
So, of course I was intrigued to hear what this guy had to say about leadership, and I was not disappointed. With a fresh perspective, an authentic message, and some great stories, he captivated the audience, and inspired people to be bold, and think differently.
Since that time, we’ve become friends, and I’ve continued to learn from him over the years as he wrote books, left the academic world to pursue a career as a full-time speaker, and became one of LinkedIn Learning’s most popular trainers.
Now, with his unique brand of edgy leadership, Dr. Todd Dewett is a best-selling author, one of the most in-demand leadership keynote speakers in the world, and he’s motivated millions to perform at higher levels, and lead with true authenticity.
His latest book is called Live Hard, and it’s a collection of twenty inspiring stories packed with advice about living life more fully.
I think you’ll find Todd’s frank advice and unique perspective refreshing, and I’m sure you’ll get some great takeaways from our conversation.

When I think about people in my life who have truly had an impact on me, and have changed my life for the better, it’s a relatively small list. And my guest on Episode 56 of the Impact Makers Podcast - Mike Sipple, Jr. - is most definitely on that list, along with his father, Mike Sipple, Sr.
After leaving my last corporate job as an HR executive in late 2005, I knew I wanted to pursue a different path - and maybe even start my own business.
Thankfully, with the help of a great coach (who also happened to work in the firm owned by the Sipples), I was able to get some great advice by networking with a whole bunch of people who were much smarter than me.
Pretty much all of them didn’t feel that I was ready to start my own business, and many of them suggested that I find an organization where I could learn from someone who’d be willing to teach me how to develop the relationships necessary to grow my own business some day.
I’ll alway believe that there was a bit of divine intervention in my situation at that time, and that it wasn’t an accident that I ended up connecting with the good folks at Centennial.
After speaking with Mike’s dad - Mike Sipple, Sr. - he was kind enough to offer me a chance to join their well-respected executive search firm. He was willing to show me how to build relationships, and to develop business, if I was willing to do the work.
So I joined Centennial in early 2006, with the goal of learning from Mike Sr. - which I most certainly did. But there was also an added bonus with joining the Centennial team. I got to know, and work with Mike Sipple, Jr. as well. Mike was about 20 years younger than me, but already a powerhouse relationship builder, and doing great work as an executive search consultant for a variety of clients in our region, and beyond.
If you’d like to hear more about that story, and the Sipple’s influence in my life, I shared about it on Episode 7 - titled How I Became a Speaker and Entrepreneur. I’ll link to that episode in the show notes if you’ve not had a chance to listen to that yet.
I think you’ll benefit from learning more about Mike today, and I’d highly encourage you to follow him, as well as the work that his teams are doing. There are several ways to connect with Mike, and I’ve linked them all up in the show notes.
So without further ado, let me introduce you to my friend and mentor Mike Sipple, Jr.
Mike is President of the third-generation boutique executive search firm Centennial, Inc. and Co-Founder and CEO of the global leadership platform and consultancy, Talent Magnet Institute®.
As an advisor, writer, and public speaker on holistic leadership, inclusive and equitable workplaces, and how organizations can become a "talent magnet," Mike has supported leaders from all over the world for more than two decades in hiring the right talent, building inclusive and equitable teams, and developing holistic leaders who care about the impact of their leadership.
As the host of the Talent Magnet Institute podcast, Mike shares conversations each week with leaders from around the world, with a focus on equipping leaders to succeed in relationships, work, community, and life.
Mike is married to his high school sweetheart, has three children, 13, 11, and 9, and both a Goldendoodle and Shih-tzu, who were both COVID-19 puppies, added over the last year of a global pandemic. Most evenings and weekends, Mike and his wife Amber can be found cheering for their kids at a basketball court, or a baseball field, or creating conversations with the global community on social media.

Since it’s a new year, I’m already hard at work on achieving the goals that I set for myself, and my businesses in 2021. And one of my goals this year is to read 24 books.
Thankfully, I’ve got some good friends who are helping to fill my reading list with books that they’ve written, which were set for January 2021 release dates.
I spoke with my best friend Laurie Ruettimann about her new book, Betting On You, which released a couple of weeks ago in Episode 53 of the podcast, and today, I’m chatting with my friend Lars Schmidt about his new book - Redefining HR - which releases worldwide on January 26, 2021.
I really enjoyed my conversation with Lars, and he has a great grasp on how leaders in all areas - not just human resources - should approach building strong and capable organizations through implementing modern people practices.
Lars Schmidt is the Founder and Principal of Amplify - a firm that helps progressive people leaders and companies navigate the future of work.
Long interested in emerging work trends, tech, and people practices, his curiosity fueled a career that has afforded him the privilege of solving complex talent challenges for some of the biggest brands in their respective fields including NPR, Ticketmaster, SpaceX, Duo Security, and Hootsuite. He's always been drawn to HR leaders who operate at the leading edges of the field, who embrace 21st Century HR, and who are redefining people practices through their vision, experience, and approach.
Lars has long worked to accelerate the evolution of Human Resources' capabilities and impact through efforts like co-founding the HR Open Source initiative, by contributing regular columns for Fast Company and Forbes, and also writing books, including Employer Branding for Dummies in 2017, and his latest book - Redefining HR, which will release worldwide on January 26, 2021.
Redefining HR provides a framework for leaders to build modern and world-class people teams, enabling them to create people centric organizations that lead to long-term success.

One of the best things about the work that I do is that I have the opportunity to connect with so many talented people doing great things to make the world of work - and the world - better for us all in the future.
Early last year, while looking to expand my network of leaders with diversity and inclusion expertise, I reached out to my network and asked a simple question - “Who should I know that does great work in this area?”
What followed were over 90 recommendations, and I was able to make some great new connections, have some great conversations, and add to my list of potential referral partners in the future.
The first person who responded to my question was Daniel Chait, the CEO & co-founder of Greenhouse, an HR tech company that helps organizations become great at hiring.
Daniel was quick to recommend that I connect with one of his mentees - Ariel Lopez.
Ariel followed up with me shortly thereafter, and suggested that we connect briefly to get to know each other better. I enjoyed chatting with her so much, that I made introductions for her to a couple of leaders in my network as well, not because she or they had any specific need at the time, but because I could see that Ariel is someone who is making things happen, and I felt that they needed to know more about her and her work as well.
Which brings us to where we are today, where I’m also introducing Ariel to many of you. Pro tip: that’s how effective networking, relationship building, and follow up works, and you’ll hear more about how Ariel values that process in our conversation today.
So, without further adieu, let me introduce you to Ariel Lopez - a career coach, entrepreneur, and public speaker with an expertise in digital media and technology. Ariel is the Founder and CEO of Knac, a platform that provides recruiters with a more efficient tool for screening applicants, managing their pipeline, and ensuring that they don't miss out on great talent.
With over a decade of recruiting experience, Ariel has had the privilege of helping some of the biggest brands in the world to build great teams, and as a career coach, she’s worked with thousands of marketing, advertising, and tech professionals to help them grow in their careers and find lucrative opportunities.
Passionate about the future of work and making the job search more humane, Ariel’s ultimate goal is to help people to find career happiness, and to live their best lives.

I’m coming in hot into 2021 with Episode number 53 of the Impact Makers podcast!
Seriously.
I’m ready to emerge from my 2020 coronavirus induced cocoon, and to make great things happen in my world, and for you in this shiny and promising new year. And I can think of no better way to kick off the year, than with my BFF, Laurie Ruettimann.
Laurie is back as a guest on the podcast to chat about her first traditionally published book - Betting On You - which will be released on January 12, 2021.
And that’s truly a big deal.
In Episode 2 of the Impact Makers podcast, I shared a little bit about how I originally found Laurie online through one of her early blogs - Teambuilding Is For Suckers. She wrote every day about work, life and cats - among other things - and even though I didn’t always agree with her, or share some of her views, her writing style was totally engaging, and she always had an informed point of view that made me think.
Over the last 15+ years, she’s evolved online from the anonymous voice behind the Teambuilding Is For Suckers blog, to being the pixie of the apocalypse who penned the wildly popular Punk Rock HR blog, and then the successful blogger who blew everything up to rebrand, and become The Cynical Girl for awhile.
A few years ago, she took all of her great writing and talents over to her own online domain - laurieruettiman.com - and resurrected Punk Rock HR as the name of her popular weekly podcast.
And while she’s become my best friend over the last 11 years, I’m also her biggest Fan. She’s simply one of the best writers out there, and can always be counted on to share frank, informed - and sometimes contrary to popular opinions - career and life advice, which is what is needed in a world where many of the so-called career experts sound very much the same.
It’s always been a personal dream of Laurie’s to write a book and to have it published by a traditional publishing house, and she’s finally made that dream come true. Her book - Betting On You: How To Put Yourself First And (Finally) Take Control Of Your Career - will be published and released by Henry Holt & Co on January 12, 2021.
So, of course, we needed to talk about this moment in time, and what it took to accomplish this major life goal. Of course, it hasn’t always been easy, but I’m so glad that Laurie pushed through the challenges, did the hard work, and has reached the point where the book will go from a dream to reality next week.
In this episode, Laurie will share a couple of the career and life stories that are included in the book, and she’ll also unpack the framework she proposes for fixing work by fixing yourself - which includes focusing on self-leadership, well-being, continuous learning, and risk-taking.
I’m so proud of my friend. And I’m really proud of this book.
I’ve read an advance copy, have pre-order a hardback version, and will also purchase the audiobook. I hope that you’ll buy at least one copy too, and will connect with Laurie to continue to follow her journey, as well as learn from her in the future.

My guest today is a senior executive at Workhuman®, a company that helps forward-thinking organizations energize their cultures, unlock their employees’ passion and potential, and unite around a shared purpose.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Workhuman® team for over 5 years now, both attending and speaking at their amazing and unique Workhuman Live annual Conference.
Each year, the conference is kicked off by the colorfully and impeccably dressed Derek Irvine, who is Workhuman’s Senior Vice President of Client Strategy and Consulting.
Derek is one of the world’s foremost experts on social recognition, continuous performance management, engagement, and the future of work, and he’s passionate about helping business leaders to elevate their vision and ambitions for their company culture.
Derek is also a renowned speaker and co-author of three books, including “Winning with a Culture of Recognition”, “The Power of Thanks”, and the latest - Making Work Human: How Human-Centered Companies are Changing the Future of Work and the World, which he co-authored along with the CEO of Workhuman, Eric Mosley.
Their book is full of practical strategies based upon wide-ranging research, extensive data and analysis, and real-world case studies, and also covers how weaving the three pillars of THANK, TALK, and CELEBRATE into the daily lives of employees can reinforce an organization’s purpose, improve productivity, and even magnify the social impact of the business.
Derek always shares a ton of great wisdom and advice in his keynotes and books, and I think you’ll really enjoy our conversation today.
You’ll also come away with some practical action steps that you can take to create a more human-centered workplace for the people that you lead and serve.

If you’re a regular listener of the podcast, you’ve heard me talk with several previous guests that I first connected with back in the somewhat golden days of blogging, and the beginnings of social networks like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.
Although I’m not sure how I originally came across today’s guest, I know that I was a regular reader of her very popular blog called Brass Tack Thinking during that time frame.
Through great writing and a relatable voice, she shared experiences, practical advice, and marketing expertise, that was extremely helpful to me, and thousands of others, in building a personal brand, and in building a business that connected with those that I wanted to serve.
Then, one day in January 2010, she wrote a blog post that was titled - “The Equestrian’s Guide to Reaching Your Goals” - and as a fellow adult amateur equestrian, I loved how she linked lessons she had learned from horseback riding to setting foundational goals for the next year.
That was it. We were destined to be the best of friends. Or, at least virtual horse buddies. :)
To this day, we love sharing, commenting and liking pictures of our horsey adventures online, and I hope we’ll actually get to meet at a horse show or an industry conference or event sometime in the future.
But, since that doesn’t look like it will be able to happen any time soon, I thought that asking her to join me on the podcast would be fun, but also really valuable for both me and you. She’s still doing great work, and continues to share her thoughts and ideas freely in order to help others.
Amber Naslund is a 20-year veteran marketer, and in that time she’s worked with some of the biggest companies, the freshest startups, and everything in between.
In her current role as a senior consultant at LinkedIn, she advises top global clients on their digital content marketing strategies, and their overall approach to using LinkedIn, while on a mission to prove that companies can build compelling, authoritative B2B brands without being dull. Amber is also the co-author of the best-selling social media handbook The Now Revolution, and when she’s not working on her next book, article, or industry talk, she’s restoring her brain cells on horseback, or spending time with her kid (who’s also an accomplished equestrian already), and her rescue dogs. In this episode, Amber and I chat about what it was like for her to go from industry darling, to best selling author, to failed entrepreneur, and what she discovered about herself in that journey that helped her to rebuild her confidence, and fuel her success today.
We also talk about what it takes to build a strong and authentic personal brand and platform in today’s noisy world, as well as what to consider when balancing a strong personal brand with a high profile corporate career.

On Episode 49 of the Impact Makers Podcast, I’m speaking with someone that I admire and respect, and whom I’ve learned a great deal from over the past 10 years through his podcast, his books, and also by sometimes sharing stages with him speaking at conferences and events around the world.
Todd Henry positions himself as an “arms dealer for the creative revolution”, and he teaches leaders and organizations how to establish practices that lead to everyday brilliance.
He’s the author of five books (The Accidental Creative, Die Empty, Louder Than Words, Herding Tigers, and the latest - The Motivation Code), and he speaks and consults across dozens of industries on creativity, leadership, and passion for work.
Todd is also the host of The Accidental Creative podcast, where he offers weekly tips for how to stay prolific, brilliant, and healthy, and it’s been downloaded over 10 million times.
When I saw that he was releasing his latest book - his fifth - in early October, I immediately bought a copy to keep my streak going of having read all of his books, and I also reached out to ask if he would join me on the podcast to share more about it with you. I was thrilled when he said yes right away, and I think you’ll enjoy learning more about his books, as well as how you can do the best work of your life.

With the Impact Makers Podcast, my goal is to inspire you to identify ways that you can make a difference at work and in life — either through providing education on a topic to increase your influence, clarify your message, or lead with greater impact, or to bring you conversations with interesting guests who are doing just that.
In Episode 48, I’m chatting with someone who not only inspires me, but who often pushes me to think bigger, and to think differently, and to take action.
My friend Kate Bischoff is a mom, a former US Foreign Service worker, an employment lawyer, a social justice warrior, and an avid adventurer.
Whether she’s working with clients, doing a free webinar on the latest rules and regulations affecting the workplace, or providing manager training, she brings an educated, experienced, and often witty perspective towards bringing about her goal of making both the workplace, and the world, better for all.
Kate has an incredibly positive outlook about life, accompanied by a thirst for adventure. After listening to this episode, I hope that you’ll be inspired to think about your own life, and how you can find meaningful ways to do work that you love, while living life on your own terms.

How many times have you heard the phrase - “Well, it’s not exactly rocket science” when someone is referring to something as easy?
I guess that means that we associate those who actually ARE rocket scientists with being exceptionally smart.
And while that’s probably true - actually it IS true - the reality is that you and I can think like a rocket scientist, without actually having to send anything into space.
So, just how do rocket scientists think? And how can you and I apply that thinking to our work and our lives in order to increase our impact?
My guest on Episode 47 of the Impact Makers Podcast has an idea. In fact, he’s been there, done that, and has written the book on it.
Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned award-winning professor and #1 bestselling author. He’s also one of the world’s foremost experts in creativity, innovation, and critical thinking.
Ozan grew up in Istanbul, Turkey, learned English as his second language, and moved to the United States by himself at the age of 17 to attend Cornell University and major in astrophysics in order to achieve his dream of becoming an American astronaut.
While attending Cornell, he served on the operations team for the 2003 Mars Exploration Rovers project that sent two rovers – Spirit and Opportunity – to Mars. Then in a surprising twist, ditched his dream to become an astronaut, and chose to attend law school instead, where - in true rocket scientist form - he graduated first in his class, earning the highest grade point average in the school’s history.
After practicing law for a few years, he decided to join the ranks of academia at Lewis & Clark Law School in beautiful Portland, Oregon, where he became a law professor, with a goal of influencing others to make giant leaps on Earth.
In April 2020, Ozan’s book - Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies You Can Use to Make Giant Leaps in Work and Life - was published, and it was recently named one Inc.com’s 6 Business Books You Need to Read in 2020.
It’s also listed as one of Amazon’s Top 20 books of 2020 in three categories (non-fiction, business, and science), and was chosen as the number one pick on noted author Adam Grant’s list of the top 20 leadership books of 2020.
I recently connected with Ozan, and have enjoyed learning from him through his popular weekly emails, and I’m challenging myself to apply the 9 strategies in his book to make giant leaps in my work and in my life.
I think you’ll get a lot of great takeaways from my conversation with Ozan today, and you can find links in the show notes to connect with him, buy the book, and sign up for his weekly email that shares one big idea that you can read in 3 minutes or less.

Whether you work for a corporate brand - or you’re a personal brand - we all have something in common.
In order to persuade people to buy from us, work with us, or tell others about us, we have to be able to create powerful messages and stories that connect with our intended audience, and position us for success.
So, wouldn’t it be nice if there was some type of framework that could help us to choose a focus and format to tell our story, so we could create content that serves our mission in the best possible way?
Well, thankfully, there is a framework, and my guest today literally wrote the book on it.
Melanie Deziel is a keynote speaker, award-winning branded content creator, and a lifelong storyteller on a mission to share the power of creating compelling and credible content with others.
Melanie is the Founder and Chief Content Officer of StoryFuel, a company that teaches marketers, creators and organizations how to tell better brand stories, and she’s the author of the best-selling book - The Content Fuel Framework: How to Generate Unlimited Story Ideas.
I’ve enjoyed reading Melanie’s book, and have found the 10 x 10 content fuel framework helpful as I’ve had to re-think how I connect with my community, and share my message while speaking on stages around the world is not an option.
In our conversation today, Melanie shares how her experience as a journalist and content strategist for some of the most well-known companies and brands in the world was helpful to her when she decided to start and market her own business, and how she’s now on a mission to help others to create content that they can be proud of, and will get their messages heard.

The reason that the Impact Makers Podcast exists is to bring you tools, tips and resources to help you build a career that you love, and to live a life that matters.
I love introducing you to people that I believe are truly making a difference out there in the world, who can inspire you to take action in your own life, or help you to discover paths to impact that you may not have considered possible for yourself before.
Julie Turney is one of those inspiring people, and I hope that you’ll listen closely as she shares how she’s taken intentional steps to grow her career and her network, and also to increase her impact.
And she’s just getting started.
Julie describes herself as a People Champion, and she’s also a woman of many talents, who wears many different hats. She’s a mom, a Human Resources Manager, an HR Performance Coach, an HR Disrupter, a Public Speaker, and she’s the host of the HR Sound Off Podcast Show.
She’s also currently writing her first book - in her spare time, of course - so she’ll soon be adding published author to her collection of titles. And she’s accomplished all of these things - and more - while living on the tiny - and beautiful island of Barbados.
Since I first connected with Julie a little over a year ago, I’ve been super impressed with the growth that I’ve seen in her personally and professionally as she’s continued to expand her network, and has challenged herself to say “yes” to sometimes hard and scary things - all while continuing to work full time, and during a global pandemic that has isolated her and her fellow Bajans from the rest of the world.
I think that you’ll find some inspiration in Julie’s approach to growth and creating an impact in the world, and if you can get past the first few minutes of me fangirling out, and grilling her about Rihanna’s whereabouts on the island, you’ll be glad you did.

Today’s guest on the podcast is my friend Kendra Ramirez.
Kendra is a well-respected entrepreneur who is a Women of Influence Award Winner, and a recipient of the John Barrett Entrepreneur Vision Award. She’s also been honored as the Cincy Chic Woman of the Year, an American Marketing Association Marketing Legend, and was a finalist for the Social Media Innovator of the Year.
Since 2005, Kendra and her team at the Kendra Ramirez Digital Agency have helped hundreds of organizations to leverage digital technologies to build relationships, brand themselves, generate sales leads, and attract talent. In 2018, Kendra also founded Reset, a mindset community that helps people to move from fear and anxiety to joy and gratitude.
Kendra and I both live in Cincinnati, and we started our entrepreneurial journeys at about the same time - around 2006 - and would see each other periodically at conferences and events, where we were both speaking about using LinkedIn, social media, networking, and a whole lot of topics that people were interested in during that time, in order to grow their businesses and careers.
And while I’ve always admired Kendra for the work that she’s done, and the reputation that she’s built, I’ve been curious about some of the shifts I’ve seen her making over the last couple of years related to building a healthy and positive mindset.
So I invited her to join me today to share more about her journey through personal and business successes and setbacks that led her to seek out a mindset coach in order to overcome some of the limiting beliefs that were holding her back.
Since we’ve all had our lives disrupted by recent events related to the global COVID-19 pandemic, I think that Kendra’s recommendations for establishing and maintaining a positive mindset will be helpful to you, just as it was for me.

Sometimes, I have the honor of being a guest on other podcasts or webinars, where I’m typically asked to share about one or more of the topics that I’m passionate about, including leadership, speaking, and personal branding. And today, I’m sharing one of those recent conversations with you.
Shortly after the world changed for us all as a result of a global pandemic, my friend, Erich Kurschat - who is the owner of Harmony Insights LLC, as well as the founder of an inclusive mastermind community called HRHotSeat - started scheduling half hour conversations over the lunch hour with people in his network to be intentional about connecting, and also to stay inspired in order to do his best work.
Back in June of 2020, I joined Erich for one of these lunch date conversations, where we chatted about the importance of personal branding for leaders at all levels, why introverts do not get a pass when it comes to personal branding, and how you can grow and develop your personal brand without having to be a speaker, a blogger, or an online influencer.
I asked Erich if I could share the conversation with you, and he graciously agreed. So I hope that you enjoy it, and get a few takeaways from it that you can apply to your career. And if you do, I’d love for you to share those with me on your favorite social media platform, using the hashtag #ImpactMakersPodcast.

My guest today is Katie Augsberger, who is an employee experience strategist that’s disrupting how we think about employee experience, and helping organizations to rethink their policies and practices to create a more healing and inclusive workplace for all of their employees.
I was first introduced to Katie through my friend Laurie Ruettimann’s podcast in early 2019, and then shortly thereafter Laurie introduced the two of us so we could connect, and get to know each other better.
You’ll hear more about that phone call in this conversation today, but let’s just say that I felt that I made a less than positive impression during our chat, and I was grateful then - and even more grateful now - for Katie’s grace, support, and forgiveness.
I hope that you will find this conversation today helpful to you in your learning journey, and take action, along with me, to create a network of authentic relationships with a diverse group of people, a more equitable workplace, and a better world where all people feel welcomed and included, and they can thrive.

Today Steve Arntz, Products Director at Instructure, joins me for an insightful conversation about Career Drivers. We discuss what they are, how to identify them, and how to take action. If you're a leader, you'll also be able to apply what we'll be talking about to coaching conversations so you can help your team to grow and to create more impact in the workplace.
Last year I attended Infrastructure's BridgeCon in lovely Park City, Utah. It was there I first met Steve Arntz. Our first encounter was when he walked me through a Career Drivers Deck Assessment which you’ll hear more about in this episode. Later during the conference, I attended one of Steve’s sessions.
I found Steve to be motivating, insightful, and inspiring. In fact, he has a passion for helping people find their why and bridge the gap between connection and personal growth. So, I invited him to join me on the podcast to help us better understand what drives us in our careers and in life. In this episode, Steve also shares what he learned through the product development process plus some lessons from his own career journey. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Steve Arntz.

Over the holidays, I was traveling to Tennessee to spend the week with my extended family. It's a 5 ½-hour drive, which allowed me with a lot of time for thinking. I brought with me some materials to start my goal setting process. In preparation, I began contemplating my goals for 2020 and what I needed to do to make this the best year ever. I came up with a list of 10 items while driving the country roads in Tennessee. Today, I am going to talk about these 10 actions which you can use as inspiration for making this your best year ever, too!
You may have already completed your annual goal setting process or be mid-stride in these processes, either way, you’ll find these suggestions and tips helpful. Who’s ready to prepare to create more impact at work and in life in 2020 and beyond?

When my BFF, Laurie Ruettimann, called me up and told me about her unplanned, open afternoon and a need for a last-minute podcast guest, I suggested we do a recording together to fill the gap. Inspired by the recurring random show theme heard on The Tim Ferriss podcast, I suggested we do something similar. Thus, this week I am bringing you a conversation with Laurie Ruettimann. Laurie is a writer, speaker, and podcaster as a result of the heartbreak and outrage she experienced throughout her corporate career. She helps executives and HR leaders prioritize the employee experience to avoid the collateral damage of a toxic work environment. She is also my mentor and travel companion.
Today’s episode is a great representation of what happens when Laurie and I get together to chat. We typically start off on one topic, in this case it was her book writing and publishing journey, and move on to the next topic, in a somewhat rapid-fire succession. You’ll hear us chat about work, including our outlook for the new year, my epiphanies about time management and our travel stories. We also discuss burnout and rethinking the way we view business.

I really enjoy reading blog posts and listening to podcasts from leaders who share some of their favorite tools and resources for productivity, running their business, or just cool apps that they use. I'm always on the hunt for better ways of doing things. Really, it's a great way to discover new tools that I want to check out or to learn to use a tool differently. Well, with that in mind, I’ve got a special treat for you. In this episode, I share fifteen of my favorite apps and tools.
I’ll cover tools for productivity and efficiency, communication and community, financial tools and data storage, plus everything in between. Some of the tools and apps I mention in this episode may not be new to you. But some of them are just so good, I had to share them with you. And hey, maybe I'm using them in a different way than you are or maybe you've heard of them before, but you haven't tried them out yet. Either way, I think you'll find something new in this list that can make your life better or easier. Enjoy!
Show Highlights: * My favorite productivity and efficiency tools, including my preferred calendar for time management and scheduling * Some of my preferred communication and community tools, including Zoom (plus why I think Zoom is a great tool for international calls) * Tools to help you manage social networks, like Meet Edgar which is a really robust social media management tool that makes it easy to schedule and automate content on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram * The importance of protection against computer data loss, plus my favorite backup tool, Backblaze * Financial tools and apps and how Freshbooks can help you organize invoices and business expenses

Productivity & Efficiency
Google Calendar – my preferred calendar tool for time management and scheduling
Calendly - a scheduling software that aims to save time, accelerate sales, and improve service quality. It eliminates the old school way of using email and phone tags for scheduling appointments, calls, interviews, demos, and more.
Nozbe – a “productivity system” to guide people on the path to getting things done and communicating effectively. Nozbe aims to help people work more efficiently so that they gain more time for whom and what they love.
Full Focus Planner – a physical Planner that “ends the tyranny of the never-ending to-do list by helping you focus on what matters most.”
Free to Focus: A Total Productivity System to Achieve More by Doing Less by Michael Hyatt
Communication and Community:
Zoom - communications software that combines phone and video conferencing for online meetings and calls, as well as webinar capabilities.
LinkedIn – launched in May 2003. I joined on May 12, 2006, and I’m member number 5,852,039. LinkedIn currently has over 610 million members.
How to find your LinkedIn member number
How to find your Twitter user number
How to find your old/first tweets
Computer Things and Data Storage:
Evernote - Evernote is an app designed for note taking, organizing, task management, and archiving. Examples: save blog posts and articles, take notes on calls, save documents, save pictures of important documents, passwords in an encrypted file, etc.
Dropbox – Offers storage of files “in the cloud,” and synchronizes my files across all of my devices. There is a free version, which I used for a year, and I now pay for the Professional plan – which is probably overkill, but for something as important as “my entire business,” it’s worth it. I pay $199.00 per year for 3 Terabytes of storage.
Google Drive - a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google.
Backblaze - An online backup tool that allows both PC and Mac users to back up their data to offsite data centers. It provides full protection against data loss and (most importantly) recovering all of your files in case your computer is lost, stolen, or otherwise compromised.
Clean My Mac – is a Mac cleaner app that cleans and optimizes my Mac. It frees up space, uninstalls unwanted apps, speeds up my Mac, and helps me to stay malware-free.
Financial Tools:
Mint – Mint is a free, safe, and simple budget tool. I use it to track my spending, savings, investments, and more. I use Mint to track my personal finances, my personal business finances, and the finances for DisruptHR – that’s three separate accounts.
Freshbooks - is a cloud-based accounting application that I use to send invoices to clients. It also tracks expenses, and allows me to upload receipt copies to expenses, which then allows me to add those expenses (with copies of receipts) to my invoices. So much easier than hauling receipts back to the office, making copies, and attaching those to invoices to mail to clients.

I am excited to share something with you that is near and dear to my heart. It's very much like my baby, and just like a baby, sometimes it's a joy and other times it can be challenging. But no matter what happens, I'll always love it. Well, what exactly is it? It is DisruptHR.
You may already be familiar with DisruptHR. But I'm sure there are some who have never heard of it, or if you have, you haven't been interested in learning more about it. Whether you're a huge fan of DisruptHR or not, I think you'll get some great takeaways from this episode.
Today, I'm going to share how DisruptHR has grown from an idea shared over lunch, to a global community that has helped people around the world to get their ideas heard and how it challenges the community to grow and connect with other like-minded people who can help them in their careers. Plus, I’m going to share what I've learned about starting and growing a movement without losing my mind.
DisruptHR was created out of a need to encourage leaders to take risks, to stir the pot and to disrupt in order to succeed. My hope is that by listening to this episode, you are encouraged to go out there, find a place where you can start dancing, see if you can get somebody to dance with you, bring on more people, and create the change you want to see in the world.
Show Highlights: * DisruptHR: Founding beliefs and how it all began * Chris Ostoich, founder of DisruptHR, how I was the flint for the idea and he was the fire * 12/3/2013: the date of our first event, what took place, and gearing up to do it all over again * Lessons learned from our humble beginnings * The growth of DisruptHR from Chicago to Canada and later NYC, By 2015, 12 or 14 cities in the US and Canada were holding events * My belief that everybody has the potential and opportunity to start a movement and to get people engaged * DisruptHR is about the disruptors, people who are participating in events or who watch or share videos

Show Highlights: * What is self-care? I’ll give you my favorite definition and share a great quote to help you remember why it’s so important. * I’m going to share the five key areas of self-care and give you tips for each area. I’ll share my stories about those areas too. * I can’t stress enough the importance of being proactive with self-care. Our bodies speak to us, sometimes loud and clear. If we don’t listen, the consequences can be devastating. * We’re talking about self-care but I’m also going to share how caring for others is a form of self-care. * Self-care has a physical, mental and emotional impact on our lives, our bodies and on those around us.

What is self-care? Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, it’s something we often overlook. Good self-care is key to improved mood and reduced anxiety. It’s also key to a good relationship with oneself and others.

Bruce Waller is VP of Corporate Relocation for Armstrong Relocation and Companies. He is the author of the books, Find Your Lane and Milemarkers, and he is a good friend of mine. He recently reached out to me to get coaching advice about how to choose speaking topics and ideas for creating great presentations and slide decks. I asked him if he'd be willing to allow me to record our conversation to share on this podcast. He graciously agreed.
The most frequently asked question that I get is, “How do I become a speaker?” While I've written blog posts on the subject, been interviewed on other peoples’ podcasts and shared about the beginnings of my own journey as a professional speaker in this podcast, there's always more to learn. Everyone is at a different place in their speaking career. And no matter where you are in your career, questions are bound to come up. Such was the case for Bruce.
My hope is that by listening to our coaching session, you will garner some takeaways of your own. We explore ideas like developing speaking topics to share on a stage in front of an audience, or simply communicating your ideas at work and in life.
Show Highlights: * Some strategies and recommendations to decide on topics for speaking * Think about what you know, and what you already have to say, and then tailor your presentations to your audience * My process for creating a speaking presentation + 3 different types of presentations you can utilize * Some "go to" resources for presentation images and tips for making your slides ‘shine’ * The importance of identifying who your people are,who is the audience that needs to hear your message, what the audience needs, and how you can fulfill that need * Advantages of being a published author

New phone, who dis? Well, it's your old friend, or in some cases, your new friend Jennifer McClure. After a hiatus, I'm back with new episodes of The Impact Makers podcast. As always, my goal is to help you create maximum impact at work and in life through building a career that you love and living a life that matters.
In this episode, I share what I’ve been up to while we’ve been apart. Life as a human in 2019 started off with a “Bang!” I’ve experienced some amazing things and some challenges too. For example, I landed my largest client to date, after almost 10 years of running my own business. I’ve continued my work at DisruptHR and also continued to check off states on my “Speak in Every State,” bucket list. All good things.
Of course, with the good there is a bit of bad; I suffered a horseback riding accident in July. I’m doing much better now but it took a lot longer than anticipated to heal. Overall, Team McClure is stronger than ever, and we have some great things in store for the rest of this year. I can’t wait to share them with you!
Show Highlights: * What I’ve been up to, including some growth over here at Team McClure * I checked another state off of my goal to speak at an event in every state in the U.S., plus I share what state I am looking at next and more about my speaking engagements * DisruptHR licensed our 157th city! DisruptHR events have now been held in 37 countries, and in multiple languages around the world, AND over 4,300 DisruptHR Talks have been given * I crossed the number one item off of my bucket list in September, a dream vacation to Ireland! * Find out what’s next for The Impact Makers Podcast

Whether you’re thrilled or terrified to talk about your story, it’s important to remember that everyone has something unique to share with the world - one that’s meaningful and inspiring. But how do you tell your story without compromising your authenticity? Today’s guest is Jennifer’s good friend and host of Camera Ready, Val Brown. Their conversation unravels the effect our voice and story play in business and the people around us, and why it takes more than talking in front of a camera to get your story across.
Val shares her best practice broken down to 3Ps: Purpose, Plan, and Presence. (Get the Camera Ready Guide download!)
As with anything in business, it all must serve a purpose - your story is no different. Tell your story, but do so with the genuine intent to connect with your audience all while staying true to your brand’s core values. Your story tells more about you and your brand than you think, so make it work for you. Remember: Purpose, Plan, and Presence - and match it with other presentation guidelines like colors, lighting, and audio quality.
