I just wanted to pop in here and say "Thank you!" to all of you who've reached out and expressed that you're praying for me and my family with the health issues that have come up in the last couple of months. I'm grateful that I am feeling better. My energy is recovering and the last several weeks have been quite a bit better all around. Here's a bit of an update.

I've been hit with some fairly significant health issues and it has led us to put pretty much everything on hold as we seek out some answers. Sometimes we mistakenly center ourselves in the story of the Bible, as though the Bible is all about answering our questions and giving us direction for life. But the Bible is not simply about helping us navigate through life successfully.
It could be said the Bible is about God—who he is, what he has done, and what he is doing. More specifically, the Bible is Messianic literature. It’s about the Messiah: the God who became human. Therefore, it’s about US—God and Man. Following Jesus is about becoming him, becoming a part of His body.

I recently published an article, Is It Sinful to Use “Transgender Pronouns”? In the article, I explored how Rosaria Butterfield recently “repented” from using what she calls, “transgender pronouns.” Why is she doing that? Should you feel the same way? How does the rest of the world view the Christianity that comes from the West? David Swartz does a wonderful job giving us reminding us that evangelical networks not only go out to, but also come from, the ends of the earth as he shares stories of resistance, accommodation, and cooperation in his book Facing West.
Then we dive into the third paradigm shift that helps us better understand the story of the Bible. That is that Jesus saw himself embedded within a large story.

In this episode, I share some reflections on being a part of the Christian community, particularly relating to my experiences with the challenges of maintaining faith within flawed institutions. I opened up about my previous experiences with panic attacks, depression, and dealing with some personal and systemic issues in church communities, which sometimes led me to ask raw questions about faith and the role of the church. What I've discovered, however, is that despite the faults and failings, the church is not as terrible as it might seem.
It is filled with people who are on their own complex faith journey and who are also striving to live a more Jesus-embodying life. Contrary to my assumptions coming out of some really difficult experiences, there are people willing to have open-minded conversations about differing perspectives and issues within Christian communities.
While our experiences may cause us to doubt, it is important to remember our experiences are just a small part of the larger picture. There is hope for healthier Christian communities.

My friend, Ricky Miller, joins me to discuss reading the Bible as story. Discovering the story nature of scripture has radically changed the way Ricky views the Bible.
While this approach can feel modern, it's actually a more historically accurate approach to scripture. We've simply grown accustomed to the more rigid approach to scripture perpetuated by the Reformation and the Fundamentalist movement.
Ricky serves as associate pastor of Skyline Mennonite Church, as well as a prison chaplain for New Horizons Ministries.

How can statistics demonstrate the attributes of God? What does it look like for Christians to engage data honestly?
I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Byran Smucker on using data responsibly. Byran lives in Hamilton, OH (close to Cincinnati) with his wife, Amy, and their four children. He has a PhD in Statistics and Operations Research from Penn State and is an Associate Professor of Statistics at Miami University in Oxford, OH.

Did you know spanking can cause some children to experience sexual arousal? I didn't either until recent months. In this week's episode of Unfeigned Christianity, we dive into this with my guest sharing personal experience and research on the topic.

I recently had the privilege of interviewing my friend Lowell Herschberger about his work as a social worker. I loved my conversation with him as a way of learning how to do justice as disciples of Jesus.
We get into what it's like to work with a secular government, how Christians can serve as social workers in good conscience, and much more.

Too often, Christian evangelism centers on converting people to the faith. But we are actually called to make disciples.
God seeks to bring about restoration by redeemed people who learn to image Him in creation as they were designed to from the beginning. "Making disciples" entails the whole--sometimes messy--process of learning to image God, following Jesus.

Sin doesn't reflect God's goodness, does it? Pride, selfishness, manipulation, impatience, sexual immorality, strife--those all reflect the beast, not God. Yet, too often, even those of us who desire to follow Jesus and live in the power of the Holy Spirit actively struggle with sin at some level. Why is that and how do we overcome it?

There's a lot of talk about deconstruction. Some people find it dangerous and concerning. Others just are in a season of re-evaluating what they were taught or what they believe.
Is deconstruction bad? What if we find ourselves in a season of "deconstruction"? How do we navigate it?

Recently, many have speculated that the COVID-19 vaccine might be the "mark of the beast." Is it? Can something like a vaccine be the "mark of the beast"? The Bible is a story, expertly crafted to tell one cohesive message from beginning to end. Just like we wouldn’t open a book like Pilgrim’s Progress and jump to random parts of the story without reading the whole thing first, neither should we treat the Bible this way.
There is plot, conflict, subplots, and many different characters. The whole story of the Bible points to and culminates in Jesus—even the Old Testament.
But what does it meant to read the Bible as story? And is reading the Bible as story just an excuse for introducing new morals that are more socially acceptable? Furthermore, since the Bible is divine, can’t it speak to people differently? Who says there is one right way to read the Bible? Besides, since the Bible is so old, how can we even know what the right way is?

The Bible is not a reference book; it’s a story. And when we approach it like a reference book, we are susceptible to missing the story.
In this episode, we’re going to look specifically at the question of whether or not we HAVE to read the Bible every day in order to be a good Christian. I think we all know we need to read it. But WHY? What is the Bible doing or saying that is important for my everyday life?
Since the Reformation, protestant Christianity has emphasized the Bible and personal piety often times at the expense of the sacraments and disciplines such as caring for the poor and vulnerable.
Some people seem to really know their Bibles but not necessarily Jesus. If the Bible is about Jesus, shouldn’t spending time in it make us look a little more like Him? When those kinds of people are the ones emphasizing reading your Bible every day, it can be hard to see what doing so is important.
Another part of what might lead some of us to ask how important it is to read the Bible every day is because many of our Christian traditions have emphasized less than helpful reasons for reading the bible every day. Let’s take a look at a few of these reasons:

In this week's episode I had four single friends come on the pod and share some of their experiences with the church as singles. Christian communities could be doing better at remembering that marriage and family is not the ultimate goal in life; oneness with Jesus is. As the body of Jesus, we need each other in growing togetehr in oneness with Him. Sadly, we too often neglect or isolate our single brothers and sisters, thereby not only hurting them but ourselves.
We discuss how to grow our social worlds to be more inclusive of those with various marital statuses. We talk about whether or not to set single friends up with dates--and how to do that if they want it.

I saw a couple of articles this past week that got me thinking. One talked about a church nativity set that depicted Joseph, Mary and Jesus each in their own cages. It represented the birth of Christ in the context of what's happening at our border today. Is it wrong to do this with a nativity scene?
The second article discussed the flaws of the modern worship movement. It suggested that modern worship is too emotional, that it needs more depth of theology in its lyrics. Is that right? Should worship be more doctrinally sound and less emotional?

In this episode I had the honor of sitting down and chatting with my new friend, Ken Brubacher. He tells his story of discovering as a boy that he was sexually attracted to men, trying to fill a longing for love through sex, and then discovering Jesus for the first time in a casual conversation with a coworker.
This isn't some "out-there" secular world story. It happened smack in the middle of a conservative Mennonite church. There are many who have similar stories--how can we develop communities where they feel safe enough to share their stories? We discuss all this and more!
