Max Tritt is a Fisheries Biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Max has lived all over the country and after serving the military for 20 years followed his passion for fish. Max is actively involved in outreach - he's been a presenter at the Maine Science Festival numerous times - and his work as a scientist for the Federal government provides some insights into how the Federal government uses and explains science.

Angie Reed has served as the Water Resources Planner for Penobscot Nation since 2004. Her contributions include field work, reports, all aspects of digital data management, training tribal environmental professionals, developing outreach materials, activity development for Indian Island School students, and conducting outreach to many non-Native schools from elementary to graduate level. Angie has been working with Native Nations since leaving graduate school in 1998, primarily in Wabanaki homelands but also all across Turtle Island.
Dan Kuznierz has been with the Water Program since 1993, overseeing the protection of Penobscot territory waters and tribal uses of those waters. He has developed a watershed-wide water quality monitoring program with more than 95 weekly-sampling locations, set up a laboratory, and conducted investigations of toxic contaminants (including dioxins, furans, PCBs and mercury), and their impact on the aquatic environment.

Aaron's Maine-focused research looks at the various factors that influence regional forest structure and composition in the hope of being able to forecast future changes. His research attempts to understand the biophysical factors influencing forest growth and to integrate those factors with other economic, climate, and sociological models. Aaron was a presenter at the 2024 Maine Science Festival.

Shawn Laatch is the Director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center and Jordan Planetarium at the University of Maine and Nikita Saini is a graduate student in Astronomy in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maine and is also a presenter at the Planetarium. Shawn and Nikiti were part of a nationwide NASA Citizen Science program that was focused on learning more about the sun and using the eclipse as a prime opportunity for that research.

Wendy LePage is a research scientist at IDEXX in Westbrook, ME. Wendy has been with IDEXX since their early start-up days, having joined them once she returned from a two-year stint with the Peace Corps, which she did right after graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in zoology.

Rob Wheeler studies fungus from both sides: how the immune system responds to fungal infection AND the how the fungus itself works. In particular, Rob studies Candida albicans, and all the ways it impacts us.
Rob has degrees from Harvard and Stanford University in 2000, and did post-doctoral work at the Whitehead Institute.

Diane Rowland is the Dean of the College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences (formerly Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture) and Director of the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station at the University of Maine. For most of her career, Diane has specialized in the physiological mechanisms of crop stress, particularly related to drought and crop water scarcity resilience. She pioneered the development of primed acclimation, a water management system that capitalizes on the nearly universal priming response in crop plants to enhance drought tolerance. Diane began her scientific career as a research plant physiologist and lead scientist with the USDA Agricultural Research

Matt is an entrepreneur and award-winning architect with a nationwide reputation for innovation and expertise in the design of high performance residential and institutional buildings. A leader in Passive House design in North America and named to Architect Magazine’s Architect 50 list in 2018, he is a frequent speaker at sustainable design conferences in the U.S. and abroad. Matt has pursued a career based on exploration and innovation, working for architecture firms in New York and Germany, where he gained a thorough understanding of sustainable design and construction systems.

Fayeza Ahmed is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Maine. She is the director of the Maine Health, Aging, and Lifestyle Lab, where the focus of her work is on the intersection of health factors/behaviors and cognitive functioning. Fayeza has been trained in Clinical Neuropsychology throughout her graduate and postdoctoral training, and is particularly interested in how cardiovascular health and modifiable health behaviors impacts the risk for developing dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Alaina Weinheimer is a postdoctoral fellow at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences where she examines how bacteria fight viruses in the ocean. She is particularly interested in jumbo phages, which are phages with really large genomes (> 200 kb). Until recently, they have been largely overlooked in both culture-based and sequencing studies due to their unusually large size that rivals bacteria!
While pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Penn State, Alaina worked in coral reef ecology labs where she was exposed to the numerous threats to coral and the potential roles of microbes and viruses in mediating or exacerbating these threats.

She researches environmental attitudes and behaviors towards forests, forestry, and other natural resource management topics using a social psychology and communication approach. Her work focuses on four populations: outdoor recreationists, forest landowners, natural resource managers, and the “general public.”

Kevin is a Senior Research Associate at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, where he works in the air-sea exchange laboratory with Dr. Stephen Archer in the biogeochemistry wing of Bigelow Laboratory. The general focus of the laboratory is to understand the sources and controls of atmospherically active gases produced by marine microorganisms. This work helps build a cross-scale understanding of the impacts/feedbacks of climate change, particularly ocean acidification, on critical biogeochemical cycles. Kevin is also part of the team researching how seaweed may be able to help reduce carbon emissions from cows.

Rebecca Robich and Chuck Lubelczyk are team members at the Vector-Born Disease Laboratory at Maine Health Institute of Research. The team goal includes investigating the spread of disease-carrying ticks and mosquitoes in Maine and the disease agents they carry. Kat Allen is an Assistant Professor School of Earth and Climate Sciences at the University of Maine, with a Cooperating Appointment at the Climate Change Institute. Habib Dagher is the founding Executive Director of the Advanced Structures & Composites Center, a National Science Foundation funded research center housed in an 100,000 square foot laboratory with over 350 full and part-time personnel. Habib and his team have been responsible for some remarkable innovations in composites, off-shore wind, and bridge technology - to name just a few. The center has worked with over 500 clients world-wide, including 150 Maine-based companies, and has received top national awards for its research. In October 2015, Habib was recognized as a 2015 White House Transportation Champion of Change as the primary inventor of the composite arch bridge system. He holds 80 U.S. and international patents with 8 additional patents pending.

Amara Ifeji is currently a student at Northeastern University AND the Director of Youth Engagement and Policy for the Maine Environmental Education Association. Patrick Breeding is a Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Marin Skincare and a Co-Founder of Dermarus. A biotechnology entrepreneur, Patrick developed his interest for the blue economy working with Lobster Unlimited. He earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 and completed his M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Maine in 2020.
Throughout college, Patrick became passionate about biotechnology research and commercialization in various fields, spanning drug development, skincare, marine bioresources, medical education and sports performance innovation, and has followed these passions toward a career of doing 'cool stuff that matters'.

Anne Lichtenwalner, is an Associate Professor of Cooperative Extension and the School of Food and Agriculture, and cooperating faculty in the Honors College as well as the School of Biology and Ecology at the University of Maine. Since 2008, Anne has been the director and diagnostician for the University of Maine Animal Health Lab (UMAHL), a member lab of the Northeast Wildlife Disease Cooperative. She is involved in research about, and service to, Maine animal industries.

Luci Benedict is an Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Director of Quality Control Collaboratory at the University of Southern Maine. Luci is an analytical chemist who has worked in the area of environmental pollutants and now focuses her research and work in the fermentation area - in particular the craft brewing industry.

Phoebe Jekielek is Director of Research for Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership. Her current research focuses on farming scallops, and she's using eDNA as one of the tools to help analyze the aquaculture farm they have at Hurricane.
Phoebe is pursing her PhD at the University of Maine, working in the Leslie Lab and being co-advised by Heather Leslie of the Darling Marine Center and Nichole Price of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Sean Birkel is a climatologist and Research Assistant Professor at the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. Sean is also the Maine State Climatologist and is part of the Maine Climate Council. One of his ongoing projects is Climate Reanalyzer, where visitors can visualize climate and weather datasets. Sean was also a critical part of the The Warming Sea project, meeting with Composer Lucas Richman as well as middle school students.

Dustin Updike is an Associate Professor at MDI Biological Laboratory. Dustin's work looks at how stem cells maintain pluripotency -- the capacity to become other cell types in the body. Dustin and his team use some of the newest and most innovative biological research tools - including CRISPR - to study C. elegans nematodes.

Tom Klak is a geographer who's recent work has focused on the restoration of the American chestnut tree. Tom is part of a team of researchers who are working on reviving the chestnut through a transgenic process, so that it can survive the fungus that decimated (and all but eradicated) chestnuts when it was discovered in the U.S. in 1904.
If you have information about a chestnut tree where you live or roam, please feel free to reach out to Tom via email (tklak@une.edu). You can also learn more about the project(s) to restore the American chestnut tree at the American Chestnut Foundation (https://acf.org/).
One note about the recording: you'll hear more than a few birds in the background. We kept them in, because it is both delightful and a truthful representation of Tom and part of what drives his work.

Kristin Burkholder is a microbiologist at the University of New England (UNE). Carrie Byron researches Marine Ecology, also at UNE. While they would describe themselves as different types of scientists - a lab scientist vs an applied scientist - they have teamed together for the last few years to look at a wide variety of science questions they have about seaweed, which is a high-growth industry in Maine.

The development of multiple vaccines for COVID-19 has been an extraordinary feat of science, but is not the final step in stopping the pandemic. The distribution of these vaccines and the need to continue to address and support public health is equally critical. In other MSF news: after having had to cancel the Maine Science Festival for 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are happy to share that planning has begun for 2022.
We are excited to announce that the world premiere of the MSF-commissioned symphonic piece, The Warming Sea will be performed by the Bangor Symphony Orchestra on March 19, 2022. The Warming Sea, written by GRAMMY award-winning composer, Lucas Richman, is a symphonic exploration of hope in the face of climate change.
A vital part of this project were the interviews between Lucas and those who have direct knowledge of climate change in the Gulf of Maine - including some people who've been featured on this podcast (Deborah Bronk, Scarlet Tudor, and Heather Hamlin). Lucas met with scientists and experts in the summer and fall of 2019, as well as middle school students throughout the state. These interviews and conversations provided the foundation for The Warming Sea. Further details about the headliner event will be released this fall.
To help support this event, we have collaborated with Sea Bags for a limited edition The Warming Sea Sea Bag. Each bag will be numbered and include a score of The Warming Sea’s concluding anthem, “Hope Begins With Truth,” signed by Lucas. Only 150 bags are available.

Deborah Bronk joined Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in February 2018 as its president and CEO; her expertise is in marine-estuarine and environmental sciences. Deborah has conducted more than 50 research cruises and field studies in freshwater and marine environments from pole to pole, and previously served as division director for the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Science and as President of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography.
In December 2020, Deborah was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and recognized for her substantial research advances on the marine nitrogen cycle and for leadership in the ocean science research community.
Deborah was recently elected as the newest president of The Oceanography Society; her term begins in 2023 and will run for two years. And she was one of the scientists involved in The Warming Sea project.

Romain Madelaine is an Assistant Professor at MDI Biological Laboratory. Romain studies neuron and muscle tissue regeneration at the laboratory’s Kathryn W. Davis Center for Regenerative Biology and Aging, in particular trying to understand why the zebrafish, which is a highly regenerative animal, can readily regenerate neuron and muscle tissue, while mammals, including humans, for the most part cannot.

Steve Munger is an Assistant Professor of Systems Genetics at The Jackson Laboratory. Steve is a computational biologist with a passion for finding patterns in “big data”. Steve and his lab explore the natural genetic variation in each of us that makes us each unique, searching for patterns in our 3 billion bases of DNA that explain why some of us are more likely to get a specific disease than others. Using mice as a model, he seeks to discover how DNA mutations that assert subtle individual effects – “genetic paper cuts” – can, in certain combinations, disrupt gene regulatory networks, cellular function, and ultimately lead to disease.

Cassaundra Rose is a Senior Science Analyst and Climate Council Coordinator with the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. Cassaundra managed a policy and communications program for the American Geosciences Institute between 2015 and 2019, where she connected the geoscience community with policy makers at the local, state, and federal levels to support science-based decision making on issues related to climate, energy, water, mineral resources, and natural hazards.
Cassaundra was scheduled to present at the 2020 MSF, along with others on the Maine Climate Council before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alicia Wilcox, who is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Thomas College. Alicia is a forensic scientist who both teaches at the college level and provides forensic science expertise in cases throughout the country.
Alicia has presented at the Maine Science Festival a few times, most notably setting up a crime scene investigation for festival goers.

Jessie is an intertidal ecologist who's studies marine macro-algae - seaweed. Her research includes the reproductive ecology of fucoid algae (=rockweeds), nearshore food web dynamics, citizen science and art-science collaborations. Jessie has her own podcast, all about algae: The Phycoverse.

Michael Burman is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of New England.
Mike has studied learning, memory and emotion using behavioral neuroscience techniques and has recently become interested in how the brain’s memory systems and emotional regulation systems come to function and cooperate over the course of development. He currently investigating the long-term consequences of neonatal pain and stress on subsequent fear, anxiety and pain.

Heather Hamlin is an Associate Professor of Marine Biology and Aquaculture, in the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine. Heather earned her BS in Biology, and an MS in Marine Bio-resources from the University of Maine before working as a Senior Biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota Florida. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2007, and then worked as a post-doctoral scholar at the same institution studying the effects of environmental pollutants on the endocrine system of aquatic animals.
In 2010, Heather joined the Medical University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor examining how contaminants can alter maternal-fetal health. Heather returned in 2011 to the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences. Heather’s current research seeks to understand how human-induced changes in the environment, whether it be climate change, ocean acidification or pollutants, can affect the reproduction and development of aquatic animals that are important to Maine’s economy. She positions her research to turn knowledge into solutions that contribute to the resilience of Maine’s ocean resources.

Ivan Fernandez is a Distinguished Maine Professor at the University of Maine, in the School of Forest Resources, Climate Change Institute, and School of Food and Agriculture. Ivan has served on various U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board committees in Washington DC since 2000, and has been involved in leading the Maine’s Climate Future assessments. In 2019 Ivan was appointed to the Maine Climate Council, and also serves as co-Chair of its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee. He is a soil scientist, with a research program that focuses on the biogeochemistry of ecosystems in a changing physical and chemical climate and is actively engaged in promoting climate change solutions in Maine.

Sascha Deri is the CEO of bluShift Aerospace, and Seth Lockman is the Communications Director. Founded in 2014, bluShift Aerospace has designed a bio-derived rocket fuel and a modular hybrid rocket engine. Building on these technologies bluShift will create a family of launch systems, the largest of which can lift 30-kilogram payloads to low-Earth orbit. These new suborbital and orbital launch systems will dramatically reduce the environmental impact, cost, and wait times of current cubesat launch services. By launching these rockets in the state, bluShift plans to create over 40 aerospace jobs in Maine in the next 5 years, and to bring revenue from the rapidly growing cubesat launch market into the state. bluShift Aerospace is headquartered at TechPlace, at Brunswick Landing.

We have something a little different today: a conversation about the discovery of a new species of tardigrade, found in the Bangor City Forest. Tardigrades are microscopic animals, and are really remarkable creatures.

Sharon Klein is an Associate Professor in the School of Economics at the University of Maine. Sharon's research and teaching are multi-disciplinary in nature, centering on the technical, economic, environmental and social trade-offs inherent in the production, distribution, and use of energy. With her research team, she has created a database of U.S. community-based renewable energy projects.
Prior to her career in higher education, Sharon worked as a high school environmental systems teacher in Quito, Ecuador; a middle school science teacher in San Diego, CA; an environmental technician in San Diego; and an Americorps National Civilian Community Corps volunteer in the Southeast region of the US
Sharon was a part of the 2015, 2018, and 2019 Maine Science Festivals, and presented at the MSF Showcase Event 5 Minute Genius in 2018. You can see her video at the MSF YouTube channel.

Patrick Breeding is a biotechnology entrepreneur who developed his interest for the blue economy working with Lobster Unlimited. He earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 and recently completed his M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Maine.
Throughout college, Patrick became passionate about biotechnology research and commercialization in various fields, spanning drug development, skincare, marine bioresources, medical education and sports performance innovation, and has followed these passions toward a career of doing 'cool stuff that matters'.
