In Life Behind the Desk, Jonathon Miller takes you into the classroom so he can give teachers an opportunity to answer the questions they wish they were asked. Discover the challenges that teachers face on a day to day basis and the added challenges they are facing due to school closures as a result of COVID-19 from a personal perspective. Dive deeper than the stories featured in the mass media so you can gain a greater understanding of what it's like to be trusted with the care and education of the nation's children from the people who do the job. Jonathon will talk to teachers from around the country to learn how they deal with under-funded classrooms, challenging parents, the administration, work life balance, and more in a public school setting. We'll also delve into what it was like the day they got sent home and told to teach from there, how they are coping with it today, and what they see in their future. If you've ever wondered what it was like to be a teacher: the struggle, the balance, and just what do they do over summer vacation we’ve got you covered. Hit Subscribe and get ready to step behind the desk.
Join our insightful conversation with Tennille Martinez, a South Florida middle school teacher with over 20 years of experience, as she shares the daily struggles of grading papers, attending to her personal life, and managing her side hustles. We dig deep into the challenges she faced when transitioning from teaching high schoolers to middle schoolers, and the unique alternative charter school she worked at that offered students the opportunity to get a high school diploma.
In this episode, we explore the impact of COVID on teaching and learning, discussing the struggles of balancing virtual and in-person instruction and how it has changed the way students interact with each other. Tennille also shares her thoughts on the challenges of technology in the classroom, including maintaining her students' focus and preventing them from using AI and chat GPT to pass off other people's work as their own.
But it's not all doom and gloom! Tennille reflects on the rewards of teaching, such as the lessons she's learned from her students and the impact they've had on her life. We also discuss the current teacher exodus and how to make the profession more appealing, while touching on Tennille's side hustles, including a podcast, The Book Advantage, about the power of books and her blog, The Profitable Teacher.

In this episode, we talk to Timm Freitas. Timm has taught in different settings throughout his career. Outside of the classroom, he does a great deal of work with the AP program and even partners with one of our very first guests Beth Hall. Timm and I discuss not just how Covid-19 affected him, or didn't, but how the educational landscape has changed. Especially with the escalation of school shootings and school violence. We touch on the teacher exodus out of the profession that we are regularly hearing about what can keep teachers in the classroom.

There are a fair amount of monthly costs associated with keeping the lights on here. Just like in education. So far I have been footing the bill. I am happy and honored to do so. It is a privilege to be able to do. However, I would like to expand our reach. If I can get some of the bills covered here we can do more, we reach more people, share more stories, and maybe even help some deserving people make it into the classroom. Unfortunately, that all costs money. For now I am using Buy me a Coffee. It's an online platform that help people collect financial support for creative endeavors. If you can, please consider going to the link below and throw in a buck, or two, or five. Consider how much a cup of coffee actually costs. It's a one and done setup, so please feel free to make your way back every month or every episode and throw something in the "hat". Every dollar is appreciated. This week we talk to Tess Kraft from Kansas City, Missouri. Tess has taught most of the lower elementary grades and at the end of last year she was working as a reading specialist. When the pandemic hit she had to scramble to figure out how to continue supporting an entire school worth of teachers. Like any good teacher, Tess thought on her feet. She started recording herself reading children's books and brought in authors to speak to her students virtually. Fast forward to this school year where Tess found herself back in the classroom, teaching First Grade before quickly transitioning to Kindergarten.
In this episode we discuss just how important it is for kids to be successful readers. We also talk about what tools parents can use to support their kids in that goal. We get to learn about an amazing lesson that Tess's district is taking away from teaching in this pandemic year.

It's mind boggling to consider beginning a teacher career in the middle of a pandemic. And, there some definite challenges. However, Audra does see the advantage of being a new teacher, she didn't have to worry about taking the way she had always been teacher and leveraging it to work for distance learning. Pandemic teaching is just what she knows. In my book, you get a lot of credit for showing up. And Audra shows up for her students. She provides an anchor for them. Showing them that even though the world around them may be a bit of a dumpster fire, Mrs. DeRidder is there, at work, ready to teach. Don't think for a minute that a first year teacher can't be inspiring.

Heidi teaches multiple grades in the same room and takes an approach to education that encourages her students to think about applying her lessons to life outside the classroom. Turns out she even does the same egg drop lesson plan I did as a kid. But, she really ups the game on it and manages to teach an elementary kid a little trigonometry in the process.

In this episode Megan Crawshaw gives us a slightly different look at what it is like to be charged with caring for, and educating other peoples’ kids. Megan is a school counselor in Florida where she works with students to make sure that they accumulate the credits they need to graduate. At least on the surface. In this episode Megan talks about how not only does she help students get the grades they need, but also help point them in a career direction and care for their emotional needs.
Like her teacher colleagues, Megan has seen challenges brought on by the pandemic that no one had any reason to expect. With students scattered between in person, blended, and remote learning her current school year has been extra. She meets those challenges with the grace and care we have learned is the driving force behind the vast majority of educators. And, make no mistake about it, Megan is an educator. She is also an entrepreneur where she shares the creative touches she puts on her adorable Florida home and markets her home décor items.
