Saint Walter Church - Coping With Jesus: Recent Episodes

Saint Walter Church

Saint Walter Church in Roselle began this podcast, Coping with Jesus, initially entirely by women for women. This podcast came to fruition after seeing so many of our parishioners and friends having difficulty coping with the pandemic and all the changes that have resulted from it. We started to look at what could help more than listen to other women, some friends and some unknowns, who are using Jesus as their model to help them cope. The first season we began by looking at the 12 examples within scripture where Jesus modeled to us how to cope through prayer and communication with the Father. Each Season that followed has always brought Jesus back into focus, but has resulted in some spiritual sharing and lessons that seem to fulfill us all.Join us each week as Donna Burke, Discipleship Coordinator with Saint Walter Church, and Julie Majovsky, Director of Communication and Technology speak with various women about their journey following Christ.

Welcome to the finale of Season 7, our love of the parables.  This week Donna and Julie invited the entire podcast team to join them.  Not everyone was able to attend but we had a nice group discussing this season, our relationships with the Lord, our take aways and some reminiscing of this entire podcast.

Do not fret, we'll be back next week!  No rest for the weary.  We have a great Advent planned and we'll be starting it up right away.

Thank you to Annette, Christine, Lisa Steiner, Beth and Evelyn for joining us for this ending and we look forward to continuing our faith journey together with you and Jesus.

Today Lisa Steiner and Eve Rossi join Donna and Julie as we look at the many facets of the parable of the Prodigal Son.  Prodigal has two meanings if you look it up in the Dictionary:
1: one who spends or gives lavishly and foolishly 2: one who has returned after an absence
So this word could describe both the son and the father in this story as Jesus has told it.

It's a long one so check it out in Luke 15: 11-32.

Beth Sommers and Lisa Steiner join Donna and Julie to discuss the Parable of the Old Garment.

No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, 'The old is better.' (Luke 5:36-39)

This week Evelyn Garfias and Theresa Castellese join Donna and Julie for the Parable of the two sons.  As with all of Jesus' teachings there are many layers to discuss.

The Parable of the Two Sons - Matthew 21: 28-32

“What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards he changed his mind and went.

The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.

Today Chris Everhart and Annette Spiezzio sit and talk with Donna and Julie about one of the really hard parables.

The Parable of the Tenants - Matthew 21: 33-45

“Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.

But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’

But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’ They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?”

They answered* him, “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.”

Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes’? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. The one who falls on this stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls."

When the chief priests and the Pharisees* heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them.

Eve Rossi and Beth Sommers join Julie Majovsky today as we look at the parable of the wheat among the weeds.

Matthew 13: 24-30The Parable of the Weeds Among the Wheat

He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off.

When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’

He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest;* then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”

Today Donna Burke and Julie Majovsky are joined by Lisa Mann and Evelyn Garfias to discuss the Parable of the Persistent Widow found in Luke, Mark and Matthew.  We read the Luke version here:

Luke 18: 1-8
Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’

For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’”

The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says.

Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?

I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Today we look at Luke 12: 13-21 in which Jesus tells us the parable of the rich fool. Theresa Castellese, Christine Everhart, Annette Spiezio and Julie Majovsky delve into this parable and really learn more about it through their own friendships and conversation.

Luke 12: 13
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”

He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?”

Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”i

Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest.

He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’

And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods

and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’

But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’

Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.”

We begin Season 7 with a look at what the Parables are, where they can be found and why they may have been used by Jesus to share His message to both those listening at the time and even us today.  This season we will look at several Parables and give our take on what they mean to us at the time or even what they may have meant in the past.

Join Donna Burke, Annette Spiezio, Lisa Steiner and Julie Majovsky as we begin this new Journey in Coping with Jesus.

The transfiguration is one of the miracles of Jesus in the Gospels. This miracle is unique among others that appear in the canonical gospels, in that the miracle happens to Jesus himself. Thomas Aquinas considered the transfiguration "the greatest miracle" in that it complemented baptism and showed the perfection of life in Heaven. The transfiguration is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus, the others being baptism, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension**.

While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.

Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”

Donna and Julie continue the conversation  of the Transfiguration with Theresa Castellese and Eve Rossi.  Today we spend some time talking about how Peter wanted to build "booths" or temporary structures for Jesus, Elija and Moses.  We learn that God continually reminded the Jewish people that their life here on earth is just temporary.  By following Jesus we're working toward heaven, our forever.

The Transfiguration of Jesus. Luke 9: 28-33

About eight days after he said this, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.* While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.

And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,  who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.

Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents,* one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying.

Episode three of this season's Coping with Jesus, Donna and Julie are joined by Beth Sommers and Christine Everhart.  We continue our conversation about The Transfiguration of Jesus where Peter, John and James first see Moses and Elijah with the person of Jesus.

Welcome back to Season 6!  Unfortunately, we had a little audio trouble this week but the show must go on.  Donna and Julie were joined with Annette and Beth this week as we continued the Lectio Divina of Luke's gospel about the Transfiguration.

We kick off Season 6 and we are so happy to be back.  Donna Burke, Julie Majovsky and Theresa Castellese break open Luke's gospel in chapter 9 where Luke tells the Transfiguration story.  We decided that we would practice a form of Lectio Divina which is a form of prayer.  You read scripture and put yourself in that scripture.  Listen and pick out a word or phrase that speaks to you.  We are taking it a step further by discussing what is striking us.  Take a listen and see that where we start out isn't where we finish.  So in a way, we transformed right here during our recording.

For reference if you would like to do the same with us:  Here is the scripture we began with:
Luke 9:28-29

Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.

Quickly we realize that we can cast that anxiety and worry by asking people to pray for us when we are in the thick of something searching for peace.  It all circles back around to having a good spiritual diet by trusting the Lord, asking for help from others and actively bringing peace into your day and your home, you will surely feel His love for you.

Episode 7 and we are joined by Beth Sommers and Linda Wasserstrom.  This week's verse from Isaiah 26: 12 just spoke to us, “Lord, you establish peace for us;  all that we have accomplished you have done for us.”  It brought us all to a place of gratitude, which with gratitude to Jesus we are blessed with peace.

Come spend some time with us as we reflect on the moments when our gratitude were expressed and peace washed over of us all.

By choosing what our thoughts should concentrate on, like the pretty words of peace, we help ourselves see the work of God throughout our every day lives.

Today Evelyn Garfias and Eve Rossi join Julie and Donna for episode three in this new season.  Our scripture quote today is Hebrews 12:14, "Make every effort to live in Peace and to be Holy."
As we do with every week, we learned some lessons during the conversation.  We not only must make the effort but also the time to bring Peace to our families and friends; we also need to allow ourselves the time to recognize that Peace and allow others to bring us the Peace of the Lord through our interactions with them.
