How can we guard against a self-righteous heart that looks religious but ends up rejecting Jesus?
This week's sermon explored the profound truth that while America was founded by seekers pursuing happiness, our deepest needs can only be met by seeking Jesus with our whole hearts. Through the powerful story of the paralytic man and his four faithful friends in Mark 2:1-12, we discovered that being part of the crowd around Jesus is not the same as being a disciple of Jesus. The paralytic's friends demonstrated radical faith by literally tearing through a roof to get their friend to Jesus—removing every obstacle that stood in their way. Jesus responded not only by healing the man's physical paralysis but by addressing his greater need: the forgiveness of his sins. This encounter reminds us that Jesus has both the authority and the desire to forgive our sins and transform our lives completely.
We continue through our summer series on encounters with Jesus. This week's message challenged us to examine a fundamental question: When God calls us to obey Him, how do we respond?
This Sunday, we continued our summer series examining encounters with Jesus by looking at a powerful story from Matthew 8:1-4. The Bible has much to say about peace. Our world certainly needs peace between nations and within nations. But even more, the people of the nations need the inner peace only God can give. There is no joy except we have such peace.
The advent season is a chance to really focus and prepare our hearts and minds on Christ and all that His birth means for us. Not a ‘reason for the season’ but a directing of my heart and actions towards this belief: He is good, He is trustworthy.
It’s possible that you’ve never noticed Psalm 131 before. It only has three verses, so you might tend to overlook it as being not very important. But that would be a mistake because this little chorus by David is quite powerful. Rev. Charles Spurgeon said that this Psalm is “one of the shortest to read, but one of the longest to learn.”

In many of the circumstances we face, we can't control the clock or other people. In reality, God has integrated such difficulties in our lives as a means to reveal Himself to us.

The Scribes and Pharisees were out to get some charge on which they could discredit Jesus. They brought to Him a woman taken in adultery in an attempt to trap Him. But Jesus turned their attack in such a way that it recoiled against themselves. What they do is trap themselves so that both they and the woman are caught red-handed in their sin. While the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave provides all believers the hope of eternal life, it is important to realize the resurrection also provides hope for life here and now. Where there is fear, where there is sorrow, where there is exhaustion without promise of relief...where there is life...we need hope. As believers, we can live now with hope because of what the resurrection means for us. It is not just hope because of what the resurrection means for us. It is not just hope for eternity, but hope for life as we live it, day by day.

Whether it is your wallet, car keys, glasses, or homework, lost things are never so precious to you as when you can’t find them. There are times in the life of every Christian that God seems far away. You pray, but God doesn’t answer. You read the Bible, but God does not speak to you. You seek God, but it seems as if He is hiding. God’s Word allows us to explore why this happens and how we can respond to it.
Today we come to The Lord’s Table to remember. “Do we really understand the significance of this ordinance of worship?” The writer of Hebrews shares important information for anyone who has received salvation through Christ about who Jesus really is.
A flag can tell us a lot about a nation and its people. It becomes a symbol of that body. A flag or a banner can become so revered that it can cause men and women to fight to their death for its cause. A flag is usually displayed in a prominent place to let everyone know who has occupied that place. Every army in the world fights under a flag that has no power in and of itself but signifies who is fighting and indicates the power and resources at their disposal. If we are Christians, we can confidently fly God’s banner because we have been given access to all of God’s strength and resources.
We all seek to know and understand this God that we worship, pray to and sing praises about. While we know our minds are incapable of completely comprehending God, we cannot even begin to grasp Him without understanding His nurturing nature. On this day as we honor our mothers, we celebrate the way God’s love is reflected in a mother’s love.

Real freedom is far from the perception that many individuals have today. Liberty is not license and the freest of all people live with certain restrictions on their lives to make the most of their freedom. Freedom is a dangerous thing for some and we know it. So what does real freedom look like?

One of the more difficult of life’s lessons to learn is that we cannot live in the past. We cannot endlessly ride the crests of past victories; neither should we allow ourselves to be weighted down by past defeats. This seventh law teaches us to "go on." But, how do we “go on?”

God set up a system where everything reproduces after its kind. It doesn’t really matter how hard we try, we can never plant apple seeds and get collard greens. Neither can we sow hatred and reap love. This second Law of the Harvest reminds us that every seed sown produces results, and every result tends to be of the kind that was sowed. It is a universal law.

The Baptist General Convention of Texas works with statewide and local entities to provide daily bread for all families. In our text today, this man is touched three times by Jesus to bring about a gradual rather than instantaneous healing. There are lessons to be learned from the crowd, the Lord and the blind man.

A favorite expression for describing someone who is upset is they are “bent out of shape.” In the passage of scripture today we are going to look at two people who were bent out of shape; one was a woman who was physically bent out of shape and the other was a religious man who was spiritually bent out of shape.
Contrary to popular belief, men do have feelings. But most men are reluctant to share those feelings with others. Women, on the other hand, have no problem opening up. Why the difference? Societies have trained boys from a young age to keep their emotions in check. But at some point a man must deal with his feelings. There is a dilemma here. A man should be able to control his emotions in order to think clearly and respond to circumstances that threaten his family. But he cannot allow emotions to simmer in his belly.
