In "Loving the Scriptures," Steve Gill explores the valuable riches of truth revealed in the Bible. This podcast explains how these truths apply to our every day lives, and will challenge, encourage, and exhort Christians to walk in accordance with the written Word.
In this episode we talk about Jesus' claim to be the light of the world. What was Jesus communicating when He said these words? What significance did this have during the Feast of Tabernacles? And how does Jesus' enemies respond? The words of our Savior in this passage are glorious and should bring encouragement as we discover how His teaching highlights His divine work and ministry that has positive implications for the whole world.

In many modern English translations of the Bible, the first eleven verses of John 8 (the account of the woman caught in the act of adultery) are said to be verses that do not appear in the earliest Greek manuscripts. So how do we explain its inclusion in later Greek manuscripts? And does this mean that this passage is not inspired? We answer these questions in this episode, while exploring some of the basics of textual criticism to help us understand things like John 8.

After telling His enemies that where He is going they cannot come, Jesus gives a call to the thirsty to come to Him and drink. What was the significance of His words given the context of being on the last day of the Feast of Booths? And how did the people in general respond to what He said? This we will explore in this episode, as we finish our exploration of John 7.

In this episode we continue to look at Jesus' words to His enemies at the Feast of Booths in John 7, and talk about the confusion that the Jews had about Him (at no fault of Christ), as well as what Jesus has to say about excluding the kingdom from those enemies. In those words of exclusion, we may tend not to think of such words coming from Jesus, but as we will see, as a sovereign God, Jesus reserves the right to speak on this exclusion.

When a significant claim is being made, many people would want eyewitness testimony to back up that claim. When Jesus claimed to be God, one might wonder if anyone else can testify to the truth of that claim. In John 5, Jesus provides His audience wth the testimony from the Father that Jesus is the Son of God. In this episode we examine this testimony that Jesus lays out to His enemies.

I'm sure that Christians would agree that the Word of God should be the standard by which we walk. However, in the American Christian culture, are there many areas where obedience to the Bible isn't taken seriously? Do we as believers come up with unbiblical exceptions as to why we can't obey certain areas of Scripture? Or perhaps ignore them althogether? In this episode, we talk about the importance of obedience, and discuss a couple of examples where many Christians dismiss true obedience and instead operate by our own understaning.

In Christian life and ministry, everything we do is (or should be) about Jesus Christ. He is the main attraction, and not anything of ourselves. And this is the lesson that John the Baptist's disciples had to learn when they expressed their worry about more people going to get baptized by Jesus than John. In this episode, we learn about John's humble attitude as he talks about why it is absolutely appropriate for Jesus to increase, and for John to decrease.

Many of us love John 3:16. But when Jesus was saying the words of this verse to Nicodemus, Nicodemus probably would not have received them the same way we do today. Prayer is more than communing with God when we have time, and it is more than just going to Him only when there is a crisis in our lives. So how should we view prayer? How should it be used? In this episode, I share a sermon I preached on this topic, drawing from Colossians 4:2-4.

Sin and the wrath of God are not popular things to talk about, but in order to fully appreciate the good news of salvation, we must understand the bad news. How does man's concept of sin measure up to the Bible's? Why is sin such a problem? And how did Christ's sacrifice take care of the sin problem? We discuss in this episode.

For so long, our Christian culture has treated evangelism in transactional ways: pray a prayer to receive Jesus into your heart, and you become a Christian. But what is the problem with this kind of mindset? And how does it effect our understanding (or misunderstaning) of the gospel and the new birth (regeneration)? These things we will explore in this episode.

The question, "How dead is dead?" is ridiculous. Dead is just dead; there are no degrees. When it comes to spiritual death, understanding a person's utter helplessness before Christ is helpful in understanding the miracle of regeneration in Christ. In this episode, we talk about man's inability to respond to God in their spiritual deadness, and the work of God in spiritually raising someone from the dead.

When Christians do ministry by their own understanding or for their own exaltation, the results can lead to chaos and confusion. But as we will see in this episode, when ministry is done God's way, the results can be truly amazing. We see how Paul makes this point in 1 Corinthians 14:20-25, when he outlays what can happen when the Corinthian church prophesies for the purpose of edification, instead of doing ministry in their own way.

The Corinthians had a love problem in their congregation, and were putting much of their focus on how to elevate themselves instead of loving others. So how does Paul instruct them in this regard? Having laid forth his words in "the love chapter" (1 Cor. 13), he continues his thoughts by telling the church how love should lead to the desire to build up the church. We begin to explore this in this episode.

First Corinthians 13 is famously known as the "love chapter," but before we examine Paul's words on what love is, in this episode we set the stage in the first few verses by talking about the importance of love as a motivation in what we do, especially as it relates to exercising our spiritual gifts for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7). What does God think of our ministry if love is not the motivation? (Note: This sermon was delivered in February 2022, not in 2023 as I stated at the beginning of the episode).

How should Christians view the law today? Some people think that since the time of Christ, the law no longer exists in the present day. But is this really the case? Does the Bible suggest that now that we are no longer under law but under grace, that the law is now irrelevant? Paul's words in Galatians 5:14, as well as other scriptures, should bring clarity and show us that the law has not disappeared and that it is very much relevant today. Paul, a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ, begins to defend his apostolic authority to his Galatian audience. He does so by briefly and autobiographically laying out his way of living in both his pre-conversion and post-conversion days. But what does his story have to do with defending his apostleship and the truthfulness of the gospel that he preached? We begin to explore that in this episode by considering his pre-conversion life.
