Denis Thompson reached out to me at THE ACL CLUB and immediately I was curious about what he was saying. Here was his brief email:

You all are in for a treat today! I have lifelong friend and forever teammate Caroline Coble on the podcast today. We grew up togetherin Colorado where we were soccer teammates for over 10 years. Caroline continued her career at Cal Berkley where she unfortunately tore her ACL. She goes through the rehab process with me but mostly talks about how she used that as a way to grow. We’ve all been there right. Working so hard for what we want feeling like we are stronger than ever, then one landing, one step, one tackle changes it all. We have to regain our belief not only in our path, but in our body again.

Today I had the pleasure to talk to Angela Gargano, a fitness expert and American Ninja Warrior competitor. We talk about Angelas love for gymnastics growing up, how she attributes her fitness career and passion to tearing her ACL in college, and how now, years later, she is going through the process again. How she has learned from the first time, what she hopes to pass on to others going through rehab, how vulnerability reflects strength, and how she is continuing to work out in the midst of her rehab process.

From Angela:

Here is some exercises and some pictures! my website with some free guides on the main page is www.agathletics.com

Try out these exercises while you are waiting to get back on you’re feet! Find a comfortable seated position and prop that leg up! Go with comfortable weights that are TOO heavy!

Tevin Lucas grew up as a multi-sport athlete blessed with the size, speed and passion for basketball and football. After overcoming some injuries in high school, moving to a new state, and accepting a college scholarship for football, Devin believed he could play at even a higher level. The day he decided to transfer to San Diego was a day that changed his life forever.

We talk about the ACL injury he sustained and how the nerve damage left him wheelchair bound for months. Devin talks passionately about his faith and the hope and trust that he had, and still has, in God's plans for his life.

Tevin's faith and hope helped him learn how to walk again, he even climbed a 14er in Colorado just a year and a half post surgery!

Tevin talks to me about how he got through this difficult time, how building a team around him helped him thrive, and we talk in depth about breaking down what society thinks is 'strength' especially when it comes to men.

Tevin has since help create a non-profit called The Hope & Love which is reaching, changing, and saving lives by bringing a message of HOPE and LOVE to a desperate generation through addressing Mental Health, Suicide Prevention, and Anti-bullying.

  • how to handle the emotions around return to sport

  • why EDUCATING people about injury recovery is so important including:

  • why words matter - pupp list
  • and we have a very real conversation about alcohol and how it can effect your recovery - and how it impacted mine

  • some good ways to deal with the pressure we put on ourselves or feel externally

  • the positive benefits of staying engaged with your team during an injury and how a day off can mean various things

  • why she doesn’t like the word potential

  • why having some fierce conversations will be tough but it will never make it worse

  • how it is so important to get sleep and feed your body right. Every little thing helps not only just physically but mentally too

  • what she did everyday (even traveling) to make sure she stayed in her rehab

Some other things we hit on:

• Who influenced her to play when she was younger • How in 1998, the WNBA helped her see her dreams • How she felt alienated throughout the ACL recovery process • How it took time to find the silver lining • Gets real about how she lost a lot of personal confidence in not playing • How working hard wasn’t the issue it was the not being able to live out my dreams • How she didn’t feel like herself until 2.5/3 years to feel like herself again consistency = confidence • How her dream of playing in the WNBA was something she wanted to prove to herself , and others, she could do • How the process of getting closer and getting cut allowed her to acknowledge she could get there • How picking her physical therapist and sports performance people really helped her in her last recovery

Stick to the end because you will want to wait till you hear her advice she would of given herself before all of this happened.

Dan Abrahams is a Sports Psychologist and Author from England who has worked with some of the most elite footballers and golfers in the world.

I learned about Dan through a former teammate, Allie Long, who worked with Dan leading up to her selection and competition with the USWNT in the Rio Olympics.

The mental side of sports and injury recovery is so important. While reading one of Dan's books (his free eBook on his website actually), I read a part that really resonated with me and I thought I should share with you all.

“The words you use determine the pictures you see which drives your confidence and subsequently determines your performance”

Just like in sports performance, what you are telling yourself your mind believes. Dan helps us look at the injury recovery in a different light and how we can use our brain power for good.

Dan starts off by telling me how he got into sports psychology and how it stemed from a weakness of his own as a pro golfer.

Throughout the pod, we talk about so many important topics including:

  1. 1st message its ok to be emotional
  2. Various ways to use your recovery as a way to audit and improve your game and mental game
  3. Having substitutions – active rest something ew to you that peaks your interest
  4. The role of cortisol in the injury recovery process

Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning or experience or following injury....sounds perfect for us right. How can we retrain our pathways to enable us to get back to full health? First off, we must choose to make a change and think better in times when we want to return to habits. Secondly, we have to be able to recognize the moments when we can form new pathways. Here is a good video about the Power of neuroplasticity.

In something new, Jordan takes a page out of fellow podcaster Gary Vee's book and starts really interacting with people on social media. After noticing a lot of interaction from tattooed.skier, she reaches out via a phone call to learn more about his (Shaun's) story. This is a real and raw conversation between the two as he explains how his past helped build character that he is reassuring himself on now, how he uses vivid visualization and film study to help foster patience, an how he uses his voice on social media and through coaching to help inspire people to keep going. This is not a conversation you will want to miss. Thanks to Shaun for being so real with his reactions and words.

We talk to Ali Krieger about the highs and lows of her ACL injury recovery. She opens up about what was frustrating about return to sport, how she learned to value a different perspective while sitting on the sideline, and how her script of what happened in the following years couldn’t of been written any more perfect.

She talks about her initial feelings, the hardest mental and physical battles she faced, and how she used small goals each day to help her feel the progress of her recovery.

Ali also speeks about what her dad taught her at a young age that helped her through the ACL recovery and is something she still uses to this day. We also play a fun rapid-fire answer game with Ali and get a “February Feels” playlist from her that we will share via Spotify.

What is your why?

Figuring out why you are doing is so important: it helps motivate you daily, make decisions to help you get to your end goal, and refocusing your mind on what is important in your journey back to full health.

Get an expo marker and write your why on your mirror. DO IT! Believe me, you won’t regret looking at this every morning and remembering why you are working back to full health.

After you do that, take a picture of it and tag @showyourscarspodcast on instagram with the #mywhy. We want to share these with the whole community so we can support one another.

Want more? Here is a good book about why you should Start With Why

Apologies for the small editing issue around the 2 minute mark. I’m still learning and trying to make this the best it can be, I will get better thanks for sticking around with me.
