In this powerful message, we explore the concept of 'ambidextrous faith' - a balanced approach to our spiritual lives that involves both internal growth and external witness. Drawing from Luke 24:35-53, we see Jesus appearing to His disciples after the resurrection, opening their minds to understand the Scriptures, and commissioning them to be witnesses. This passage reminds us that our faith journey isn't just about personal comfort, but about moving forward in God's mission. The analogy of playing bass guitar, requiring both hands to work differently yet in harmony, beautifully illustrates how we're called to minister both inside and outside the church. We're challenged to step out of our comfort zones, whether that means serving within our church community or boldly sharing our faith in the world. This message encourages us to embrace a fuller, more dynamic faith that impacts both our personal growth and our ability to reach others with God's love.
The sermon delved into Luke 24:13-53, examining how we experience Jesus when things don't work out as expected. Using the metaphor of condiments, particularly ketchup representing attraction and reconciliation, we explored how our expectations can sometimes blind us to Jesus' presence in our lives. In this powerful message, we're reminded that darkness is not a dead end, but a divine tool God uses to transform us. The story of Jesus' death and resurrection, as told in Luke 23:44-46, illustrates how God works in our darkest moments. Just as Jesus emerged from the tomb, we too can emerge from our struggles stronger and renewed. The darkness we face isn't punishment, but rather a cocoon where God is working on our metamorphosis. We're encouraged to view waiting periods not as wasted time, but as opportunities for growth in trust, character, and courage. This perspective shift can help us navigate life's challenges with hope and faith, knowing that God is always at work, even when we can't see it.
In this powerful message, we're reminded of the profound impact of rejection and how to navigate it with faith. The story of Jesus' betrayal and Peter's denial in Luke 22 serves as a poignant backdrop for exploring our own struggles with disappointment and betrayal. We're challenged to recognize 'Judas moments' in our lives and to stay close to Jesus even when it's difficult. The sermon beautifully illustrates how Jesus' look of conviction, not condemnation, can break us open and free us from shame. We're encouraged to let go of negative scripts that others have written for us and instead embrace our true identity in Christ. This message reminds us that our worth isn't defined by rejection, but by God's unwavering love and purpose for our lives.
We will be walking through Psalm 23 and it may be a perspective you've never heard yet!
Jesus is finishing his teachings on judgment finishing with this metaphor intended to bring our eyes back onto ourselves. When we hear this, we often think of other’s “fruit” or actions. But Jesus intends this to be applied to you personally.
Sometimes what is happening topside and inside are not on the same page. The same can be true of us. Our actions do not always reflect the message we intend to send to others. Jesus is contrasting values to expose truths. And he starts with some directives intended for us to take ACTION with. Your behavior topside comes from what is happening below deck in your mind, heart, and soul.
The darkroom is where all our work is revealed for what it truly is. You may be in a spot like that; you’ve got skills, you’ve got vision, you’ve got passion, you love Jesus, and you feel like you aren’t making an impact, or you’re unnoticed, or you stuck. This collection of Jesus’s teachings in Luke 6:17-49 serve the same purpose for our souls, values, and direction for our future.
The temptation of PERFORMANCE believes, "I am what I do."

In Baseball, Strikes are easier to hit, but they can also strike you out! The clash between God, Moses and Pharaoh is warming up so our crucible series takes a different focus. We see Moses conveying that God deeply cares about them, causing them to worship Him. Even while still being in slavery! But sometimes things get worse before they get better...
In scripture, A WELL can also be a metaphor for the soul, which contains the depths and hidden riches of a person.
In Jungian psychology, water is an image of the hidden world w/in a person, containing the invisible life, wrecks, and treasures to be found (RHB, 41).
Teresa of Avila wrote about water being the deep place w/in a person where God’s presence also dwells and interacts with us.
Jesus referred to himself as “living water” (John 7:38), that springs from w/in us.
How do you renew your mind?
Through revelation, which comes through scripture study. When you study scripture, you’re planting seeds that are watered through worship, and prayer, and fasting, and serving others, that God matures into you being transformed!
Jesus had a way with the scriptures that nobody else had before.
When he would teach, they would notice His authority.
When he was questioned, he would accurately cut through the excess culture to the heart of the scripture.
And when he lived, his actions were a living quotation of the scriptures.
The lesson I’m learning is the redemption of our lives in Christ also involves a redemption and transformation of our MINDS.
What is Spiritual Fasting? • “The deliberate abstinence from some form of physical gratification…to achieve a greater spiritual goal.” Tony Evans • Going without (food) so you can give greater attention to spiritual matters. • Essentially, it’s creating more space for Jesus in our lives.
Where does OFFENSE come from? Offense begins with hurt. Usually because we perceive something has been taken. As I allow offense to remain in my heart, it grows like a cancer (RADIOACTIVE) & if left unchecked, it spreads & grows until eventually anything offends me and creates multiple issues. The main issue w/offense is that it kills the LOVE Jesus calls us to be, for one cannot act out of both love for people and offense at a person. So we must learn to clean up the radioactive waste through FORGIVENESS.
Relationships are like a river: you start out as a stream and every person you come in contact with is like two streams connecting, which can be a little rocky at first, but has the potential to become powerful, productive, and creating life.

We had the privilege to hear from several Hillcresters who participated in the ornament activity last year at Christmas eve 2019. They wrote down a word that they wanted to see God grow and activate in their life this year in 2020.
What a year it has been!!
The focus of this word has transformed a lot of Hillcrest lives in ways they did not expect.
We encourage you to participate! So grab your ornament kits, watch this video with your friends and family, and write down a word on your ornament this year that you want God to cultivate in you for 2021.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS - a set of special abilities that God has given you to share his love & to serve others. 1 Peter 4:10 God has given gifts to each of you from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Manage them well so that God's generosity can flow through you. A spiritual gift is: * a God-given SPECIAL ABILITY given to every believer at conversion by the Holy Spirit. * to SHARE God's love and to STRENGTHEN the body of Christ.
4 Common Traps: 1. Comparison - places greater value on the more visible gifts. 2. Projection - expecting others to be good at the things were good at. 3. Rejection - I can't have that gift... 4. Deception - when you believe you have gifts you don't actually have, which distracts you from the gifts you do have.

Tension between serving our wants and serving others.
Our faith grows exponentially more when we serve others, because we experience Jesus at work.
When it comes to serving, we either create excuses or we experience the Creator.
Did you know…there are > 500 verses in the Bible related to prayer and almost 500 on faith? * BUT there are over 2000 verses on the subject of Money and Possessions. * About one third of everything that Jesus taught was about possessions, about money, about things. * Jesus spoke more about our Money & possessions than Heaven and Hell combined
The only subject that Jesus talked more about than money was the kingdom of God. * Money can quickly move to the center of our minds if we aren’t careful. * Few things cause more fear in us than money can.

What’s the story?
A lot of you took some time to reflect on the past year and decade and made notes. * Do you notice things you would have done differently? Conversations, decisions, etc... * What if you could take all of that insight from the past decade and use it to make the next decade better? * Wisdom is God’s answer to virtually all of life’s decisions. * Wisdom is living every present moment intentionally, recognizing we are standing in the shadow of our future.
Jesus is building something—in you, in us, in Hillcrest. * Wisdom is going to be our foundation.
MAP vs. COMPASS
- In life we often ask God to give us a MAP.
- Go here, visit there, spend here, save there, say yes here, say no there, move there...
- But that’s all INFORMATION. Info is everywhere and it is not very valuable anymore.

MYRRH - Represents Jesus’s death.
—> "THE WORD COMES FROM A HEBREW ROOT MEANING BITTER.” * It was an oxymoron, because of it’s name coming from bitterness but everyone around it describing it as sweet. * Just like the death of Jesus, which was a bitter event for Jesus but produces the sweetest, most beautiful, brilliant life for us.

In Jesus’s culture, frankincense had a very special use in worship. It was extremely valuable, possibly even more valuable than gold.
Of the 5 Main types of offerings God accepted in the OT, this was the most special. * It carried the meaning that all we have belongs to God. * That is the heart of worship.

APPLES take time outs. * Before they produce fruit, they have to chill. Literally. * Chill: cold, quiet, anonymous, dark, “unproductive.” * Necessary for the health and maturity of the tree and fruit. * If the tree during the chill is exposed to warmth too soon, the tree becomes susceptible to disease, and / or poor fruit. * Be aware of being exposed to things too soon.
We need the “chill” too. We need the same time out in order to be our best sometimes.
The self-controlled person has the wherewithal to say this is my limit and I am not going any further.

This message is on "Kindness" from the fruit of the spirit verses in Galatians 5:22-23.
Brian talked about the correlation between pineapples and kindness. Kindness reveals that Jesus has been at work in the soil of someone’s soul and is producing a deep change in them that affects how they see and interact with the world around them.
When pineapple grow, hundreds of flowers are produced and they join together to form a single fruit. * Maybe this is why Kindness draws us together; before it draws us together, it was its self drawn together in it’s own maturation.

We’ve been on quite the journey with this Psalm over the past 3 months, and it wraps up with a powerful and positive statement that overflows with faith, gratitude, and love for the Shepherd.
The sheep has experienced all the CARE, all the WORK, all the alert WATCHFULNESS, all the SKILL, all the CONCERN, all the SELF-SACRIFICE of the Shepherd. He / She TRUSTS their shepherd and his character. Through the good AND the bad, the happy and the scary, the sheep still says, "My cup overflows with blessings."

Have you ever been really bugged by some kind of thought buzzing around your brain? Flies could literally drive sheep insane because they pop up & fly around the faces of sheep, who do not have any defenses against flies. The sheep would begin to hide & get fearful. They'd stomp around, get irritable, and if they didn’t find relief some would bang their heads up against trees, scratch themselves blind, and even drown themselves in rivers or run off cliffs accidentally.

The Shepherd carries two tools to guide and protect his flock: a rod and the... STAFF. This message is on the staff of a shepherd and what He does with it. Since the Shepherd constantly carried the staff, the sheep considered it a part of him so he would use it to touch the sheep as they went by for extra attention, which the sheep loved.
What is the point of all the contact? One main benefit is to heal hurt. How does God do that? He wants us to deal with our hurt.

TEMPTATIONS really do run high during the dark valley days.
One important element of the dark valleys for us, they have the potential to be EXTREMELY FRUITFUL...If you water where you are planted, so to speak.

This is a psalm that chronicles a year in the life of a sheep; written from a sheep’s perspective, by a shepherd, who discovered how shepherd-like God is. The idea in this message is that unrested sheep (us) are unhealthy sheep. So God works in our hearts to remove toxins, "rocks", provide water for a dry heart, and give us rest when we "strive" too much for things that may not be for us.
We also talked about relational needs that God meets through relationships.
