San Francisco Giants meet the New York Yankees. Chuck Hiller, a Giants player makes the first National league grand slam ever in World Series play. New York Yankee Tom Tresh gets a 3 run home run in game 5. As play shifts to San Francisco, it rains for a long time delaying continuation of the series. Giants Willie McCovey hits one to Yankee Bobby Richardson for the final out and the New York Yankees win the World Series.

Don Mueller of Giants hits single off Don Newcombe of Dodgers, Whitey Lockman singles sending Mueller to third. The Philadelphia Phillies were champions of the National League and the New York Yankees were champs of the Ameircan. The Series began on Wednesday, October 4, and concluded Saturday, October 7. The Phillies had home field advantage, but the Yankees won their 13th championship in their 48-year history, sweeping the Phils in four games. The final game result was a 5-2 Yankee win, and was the only game in the Series decided by more than one run. This World Series title would be the second of a record five straight titles for the New York Yankees (1949–1953). This was also the last all-white World Series as neither club had integrated in 1950. The Phillies, a particularly young team which came to be known as the "Whiz Kids", had won the National League pennant in dramatic fashion on the final day of the season to garner their second pennant—their first in 35 years. But writing in the New York Times on October 3, 1950, John Drebinger picked the Yankees to win the Series in five games: "The Stengelers simply have too much over-all pitching. They have the long range power. They possess rare defensive skill, and they have the poise and experience gained through the past four years which brought them two world championships and three pennants." Oddsmakers made the Yankees 2–5 favorites to win the Series. Curt Simmons, a 17-game winner for the Phillies in 1950, had been called to military duty in September and was unavailable for this Series. Simmons was stationed at Camp Atterbury and requested and was granted a leave on October 4 to attend the Series. The Phillies chose not to request that Commissioner Chandler rule Simmons eligible for the Series but Simmons chose to attend to support the team. Simmons' place on the Series roster was taken by pitcher Jocko Thompson. Phillies ace Robin Roberts didn't start Game 1 because he had had three starts in five days including the pennant winner on the final day of the regular season—played October 1, 1950 (three days before Game 1).

1954 World Series Game 3,The 1954 World Series matched the National League champion New York Giants against the American League champion Cleveland Indians. The Giants swept the Series in four games to win their first championship since 1933, defeating the heavily favored Indians, who had won an AL-record 111 games in the regular season. The Series is perhaps best-remembered for "The Catch", a sensational running catch made by Giants center fielder Willie Mays in Game 1, snaring a long drive by Vic Wertz near the outfield wall with his back to the infield. It is also remembered for utility player Dusty Rhodes' clutch hitting in three of the four games. The Red Sox need just one win in two games and Mel Parnell, who has won 25 games during the season, on the mound for Boston. Allie Reynolds is starting for New York. There are 69,511 fans watching. After trailing 4-0, the Yankees come back to tie the game, and Johnny Lindell hits an eighth-inning, game-winning, home run. The next day, before 68,055, it is Boston's Ellis Kinder facing New York's Vic Raschi. The Yankees lead 1-0 after 7 innings. The Red Sox bring in Parnell, who pitched yesterday, to relieve in the 8th inning. Tommy Henrich hits a home run, and then a sore- armed Tex Hughson is brought in on relief. Hughson yields a 3-run triple to Jerry Coleman, although it is really a pop fly that just eludes Al Zarilla in short center. In the ninth inning the Red Sox rally for three runs but still fall short. It is Casey Stengel's first pennant.

The dream continued for the Mets who swept the Atlanta Braves in three games to win the initial National League Championship Series and achieve the first pennant in Mets history. Nevertheless, it appeared to be the stroke of midnight for the Cinderella Mets when they faced the Baltimore Orioles in the 1969 World Series. Featuring three twenty game-winning pitchers (Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally, and Jim Palmer), the Orioles won the American League Eastern Division with 109 victories, finishing nineteen games ahead of the second place Detroit Tigers. The Orioles easily deposed of the Western Division champion Minnesota Twins in three games and seemed destined to dominate the Mets. Yet, in one of the greatest World Series upsets in history, the “Miracle Mets” defeated the Orioles in five games, setting off massive demonstrations of joy throughout New York City.

Historian presents The 1949 World Series featured the New York Yankees
and the Brooklyn Dodgers, with the Yankees winning in five games for
their second defeat of the Dodgers in three years, and the 12th

Historian presents Babe Ruth
George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 â August 16, 1948), also popularly known as "Babe", "The Bambino", and "The Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914-1935. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest baseball players in history. Many polls place him as the number one player of all time.
Although he spent most of his career as an outfielder with the New York Yankees, Ruth began his career as a successful starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He compiled an 89-46 win-loss record during his time with the Red Sox and set several World Series pitching records. In 1918, Ruth started to play in the outfield and at first base so he could help the team on a day-to-day basis as a hitter. In 1919, appearing in 111 games as an outfielder, he hit 29 home runs to break Ned Williamson's record for a single season.

Baseball Historian presents a Tribute to Baseball's Great, Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 â October 24, 1972) became the first African-American major league baseball player of the modern era in 1947.[1] While not the first African American professional baseball player in United States history, his Major League debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers ended approximately eighty years of baseball segregation, also known as the baseball color line. In the United States at this time, many white people believed that blacks and whites should be segregated or kept apart in many phases of life, including sport. The Baseball Hall of Fame inducted Robinson in 1962 and he was a member of six World Series teams. He earned six consecutive All-Star Game nominations and won several awards during his career. In 1947, Robinson won The Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award and the first Rookie of the Year Award. Two years later, he was awarded the National League MVP Award.

Baseball Historian presents Willie Howard Mays, Jr. (born May 6, 1931 in Westfield, Alabama outside Birmingham) is a retired American baseball player who played the majority of his career with the New York and San Francisco Giants before finishing his career with the New York Mets. Nicknamed The Say Hey Kid, Mays was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. Mays won two MVP awards and tied a record with twenty-four appearances in the All-Star Game. He ended his career with 660 career home runs, third at the time of his retirement, and currently fourth all-time. Many consider him to be the greatest all-around player of all-time.

Baseball Historian presents Mickey Mantle Remembered (October 20, 1931 â August 13, 1995) was an American baseball player who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. He played his entire 18-year major-league professional career for the New York Yankees, winning 3 American League MVP titles and playing for 16 All-Star teams. Mantle played on 12 pennant winners and 7 World Championship clubs. He still holds the records for most World Series home runs (18), RBIs (40), runs (42), walks (43), extra-base hits (26), and total bases (123). Mantle died on August 13, 1995 at age 63.

Baseball Historian presents The Great Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub whose career was from 1953 to 1971. He will always be "Mr. Cub," the most popular player the Cubs ever had. His sunny personality is legend, as is his refrain on a sunny day: "Let's play two!" The first black player on the Cubs, Banks came up as a shortstop, where he won consecutive MVP awards, but actually played more games at first base. He is also one of a handful of Hall of Famers never to get into postseason play.

A native of Columbus, Mississippi, Walter Lanier "Red" Barber was born February 17, 1908. He launched his colorful and distinguished broad casting career in Cincinnati in 1934. Barber was highly regarded by his peers and his broadcasts were noted for their fairness and accuracy. He was best known by his nickname "Red." Barber followed McPhail to Brooklyn, where he pioneered baseball on radio in New York. He became known as the "Voice of the Brooklyn Dodgers." Barber was at his microphone on August 26, 1939 when the first major league baseball game was telecast from Ebbets Field. The game was a doubleheader between the Dodgers and the Reds. He was with the Dodgers when Jackie Robinson came to Brooklyn in 1947 and he had a major role in shaping the baseball worldÃïÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs reaction to RobinsonÃïÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs breaking the color barrier in major league baseball.
Red Barber left the Dodgers in 1953 and took a job with the rival New York Yankees. He remained there until 1966. The "old Redhead" as he was affectionately known, compiled an impressive record, covering 13 World Series and other major sports broadcasts. His career as a broadcaster lasted 38 years.

George Herman Ruth, better known as Babe Ruth, was the greatest sporting hero of his day. Seventy years later it is difficult to comprehend just what a legend The Babe was. Adventures of Babe Ruth are short fictional tales of the life of the great baseball player. They border on being modern day fables, each one with a simple yet important message to put across to the audience. Despite the simple plots and sugar-sweet story lines they are still most enjoyable to listen to and the sound quality is (on the whole) excellent considering their age.
