Liz Johnson is a Paralympic Swimming Champion and a champion for the rights and opportunities of the disabled community. When she left her athletic career behind and began pursuing a career, she found that the considerations for the disabled community were working against them, not for them. She co-founded The Ability People to help bridge gaps and advocate for disabled people in the workforce. From sparse public transportation to a lack of elevators, it's no wonder why the unemployment rate within the community is so high. Liz is working to show everyone that the way someone is different than you should not be their defining factor in your eyes, but it also does no one any good to ignore those differences. Go to a place of discomfort to be able to grow.

Rita Levi-Montalicini co-discovered the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). This discovery led to advancements in the way we approach neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Dementia. Her discoveries were nothing short of awe inspiring, especially considering she was at one point relegated to performing her experiments in a makeshift lab in her bedroom when Mussolini passed laws barring academic and professional careers to non-Aryan Italian citizens- after all, Rita was Jewish in Fascist Italy.

Canada's first woman to achieve the title of Professor, Carrie Derick, was a dedicated and passionate teacher from the age of 15. Ava DuVernay didn't set out to be a filmmaker, but she always was a film lover. Initially going in to Journalism and then opening her own PR firm that provided PR and marketing for the cinematic and lifestyle industries, she picked up a camera in her 30s, used her own money, and made her first short film. And the rest, as they say, is history. She is one of the heavy weights, now with her company Array, producing films from underrepresented communities in the industry. One of Ava's most notable films she directed would be Selma, a film that helped her to make history at the Oscars. Focused on exploring the lives and struggles of Black Americans throughout history, Ava's works are though provoking, inspirational, tough, and eye opening.

Wangari Maathai dedicated her life to improving the world in as many ways as possible. With founding the Green Belt Movement, she wanted to empower the people to examine their situations and take the necessary actions to change them. Wangari believed that through environmental activism we can promote peace by working together to preserve the resources we have around us. Leah Chase was a facilitator of important conversations, but you'd never know her true impact on the progress of America if you asked her. Marthe Gosteli is considered the primary architect for the Swiss women's right to vote. As the last country in the European Union that granted women the right to vote, Gosteli made it her primary objective to ensure that the contributions of the women of the movement wouldn't go without precognition and preservation. Catherine Breshkovsky was born into aristocracy during the mid 1800s. From an early age she saw the injustices that surround the serfdom that was still practiced in Russia, and decided that it was her responsibility to join to revolution and make some changes. While she was able to escape the tsarist police forces numerous times, she was arrested on two different occasions. One resulting in a 20 year hard labor sentence in Siberia, and the other a lifetime sentence to Siberia.

Dr. Anna Julia Cooper was the 4th African American woman to receive a PhD in any field in the United States. Along with her incredible career in academia, Dr. Cooper spent her life advocating for the proper education of African American women and girls. Her book, A Voice from the South: by a Woman from the South, is lauded as the first articulation of Black Feminism. During her life she impacted the lives of thousands of students while she was a teacher, Principal, President of a college, and advisor.
Marisa Acocella has always been one to empower with her work. Her most recent graphic novel, The Big She-Bang: The HERstory of the Universe According to God the Mother, is a captivating book full of untold HERstory. In this interview, she shares with us what writing about her cancer diagnosis was like, some of her favorite women of HERstory, and her experience as a cartoonist for The New Yorker!
Gertrude Belle Elion, AKA Trudy, discovered, along with her colleague Hitchings, a new and more efficient way to develop drugs. Even the drugs that they developed were more efficient at treating the patients they were administered to. After losing her grandfather to painful stomach cancer, as well as losing her fiance to a heart condition, she dedicated her life to helping those around her. She was known to be joyful, kind, and always thinking about the patient.
Jena Bautmans shares with us how seeing how the fashion industry impacts the environment first hand made her want to help make a change. With her HERstoric election into office, she became the first woman of color elected to the House of Representatives, and the first Asian-American woman to serve in Congress. Bertha von Suttner was a dedicated leader of the Peace Movement from the 1890s to her death. Her novel, Lay Down Your Arms, is still widely accepted as one of the most important literary works in, or out, of the peace movement. She and her husband fought to prevent the eruption of World War 1, providing other options and commentaries on how to lead a world of progress through peace, rather than war. She was a dear friend of Alfred Nobel, and is often credited with providing him the inspiration for the creation of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Effa Manley co-owned the baseball team, The Newark Eagles of the Negro League, with her husband, Abe. She was quickly recognized as an excellent business woman and dedicated her life to baseball and the Civil Rights movement, hosting various benefits at the stadium to raise money and awareness to local causes. Effa lobbied for the inclusion of Negro League players in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and ended up being inducted herself!

Mary McLeod Bethune was the 15th child of former slaves that was given the rare opportunity of a formal education at the age of 10. From that moment on, she was in motion. She worked alongside numerous Presidents of the United States, founded and was the President of Bethune-Cookman College, and during all of this, still found the time to be active in every possible outlet available. Her "Black Cabinet" under FDR laid the political groundwork for the modern day Civil Rights Movement.

Henrietta Lacks was a young African American mother of 5 when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 31. She went to Johns Hopkins, the only hospital in the area that treated Black patients, and during a routine procedure, her cells were taken without her permission or consent. A second sample was extracted in the autopsy facility at Johns Hopkins after her death, again without her consent. We delve into science and ethics and consider what part race played in her treatment.

During World War 2, the Soviets became the first country to allow women to engage in front line combat with the formation of the 588th Bombing Regiment. They consisted of three units of roughly 400 women per unit, and were the most successful and most decorated Regiment in the Soviet Airforce during World War 2.
